00:01:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we've got another preview episode with myself and our resident football coach from the United States, Irby White. So look out for those

Honoring Liverpool's Past Players

episodes.
00:02:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
A bit of news, club news coming out. liverpool have presented 14 former players with retrospective league championship winners' medals for, as they say on the Liverpool FC website, for their contributions to the club's total of 20 top flight titles. And I think that's a really good thing.
00:02:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, that there was a time... back in those kind of seasons gone by, years gone by, where players would would make significant contributions to the club's season.
00:02:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the rules were... a little bit more stringent. You know, the criteria was that much more tougher to get a winner's medal. Whereas here in the modern age, we've got such big squads and you see players who, you know, barely kick a ball on all season.
00:03:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And at the end of the season, they've got a Champions League winner's medal. And they parade these medals around, you know, when they become pundits after they retire, which is not fair enough. That's, you know, they they were part of a squad.
00:03:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it does, it it doesn't sit right that there are former players who I think contributed much, much more. And they they don't get,
00:03:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
their kind of rewards. And so it's nice to see the club looking back and thinking, you you know, these these players really did contribute and they deserve

Recognizing Key Contributions by Former Players

00:03:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
a medal. So the players that have got these medals, David Fairclough for the 1982-83 season where he made eight appearances.
00:03:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
And David Fairclough was, he was known as the original super sub. That's where the the term comes from. the super sub but and he famously scored for Liverpool against St Etienne in the European Cup in the 1970s you know really really famous goal that kind of almost cemented that that kind of reputation that Anfield got for these famous European knights.
00:04:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's it's good to see David Fairclough being honoured in that way. David Hodgson has got a medal for, again, the, well, actually the 1983-84 season for five appearances.
00:04:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Alan Kennedy for the 1985-86 season. i think this is
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
kennedy's is probably not the kind of automatic first choice left back that he had been for quite a few seasons under Bob Paisley. And, you know, another great servant of the club. I mean, he he scored the winner in the 1981 European Cup final against Real Madrid in Paris.
00:05:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
We won that game 1-0, the only goal, and it was scored by our left back, Alan Kennedy. Three seasons later, penalty shootout, European Champions League final, Liverpool versus Roma at the Stadio Olimpico in Italy and up steps Alan Kennedy to again score the decisive goal that wins the European Cup for Liverpool.

Highlighting Health Issues in Football

00:05:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so it's I think it's really, really fitting that someone who's had such a significant impact on Liverpool's history, and and particularly their kind of European history, which really sets the club apart from from other clubs in England, you know, that we are the most successful club in in English football history and in particular in Europe.
00:05:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
So he had eight appearances in that nineteen eighty five eighty s six season. So he's got a a medal as well. Chris Lawler, for his six appearances way back in the 1963 season,
00:06:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
1964 season, his son collected on his behalf. Jan Molby got seven appearances in 1987-88 season. Jan Molby, fantastic player, great midfielder.
00:06:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Couldn't run more than 10 yards, but my word, what what a player, what you know such vision, great passer of the ball. And you know it was a real feature of that
00:06:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
1980s Liverpool side. And so for the 1987-88 season, he's he's been given medal. Another player which I think really holds a special place in the hearts of Liverpool fans, you know, up and down the country and around the world, Terry McDermott, absolute bona fide Liverpool legend.
00:06:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he made nine appearances for the 1975-76 season, which he's been given a medal for. But he played such an instrumental part in Liverpool's success in the late 1970s and the early 80s, where where you know he he played so well under you know those Bob Paisley teams.
00:07:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's quite poignant. I mean, Terry McDermott was diagnosed with dementia back in 2021. He was said to be in the early stages of of that condition.
00:07:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And unfortunately, he's he's one of many, many players, particularly in English football. I'm not really aware of the the situation for players in other countries, but...
00:07:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, there, there are just too many footballers who have got, these head injuries, uh, and dementia. And you've got to wonder this, the the kind of weight of the footballs that they used to play with, in those times was so heavy and the constant heading, you just wonder what kind of damage was done, but,
00:08:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, Terry McDermott, fantastic player, one of the original kind of box-to-box midfielders, could do everything. You know, he was up and down that pitch for every minute of the game, defending, attacking, you know, scoring goals, setting up goals, scored, I think, in the European Cup final, I think, in 1977.
00:08:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if you get a chance to YouTube a goal that Terry McDermott scored, it's, I can't remember what season it was, it might have been 1981 or 82, but he scored an absolutely terrific goal against Tottenham Hotspur in the sixth round of the FA Cup.
00:08:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
An absolute screamer of a goal. So, yeah, just YouTube Terry McDermott, FA Cup goal against Tottenham Hotspur. I'm sure it will come up. but Fantastic goal. Fantastic player. Fantastic servant of the club.
00:08:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, really, really pleased that he's got this medal and has been honoured in this way. Ronnie Rosenthal gets a medal for the 1989-1990 season where he made eight appearances.
00:09:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I have to confess, the only whenever I heard the word or the name Ronnie Rosenthal, I just think about the... Terrible miss. hey It's one of the worst misses that you'll see.
00:09:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
An open goal miss. I think he hit the crossbar. Might have against Aston Villa. But that's and that's something else to YouTube as well. But he's got a medal as well.

Anecdotes and Memories from the 1980s

00:09:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Paul Walsh.
00:09:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
The diminutive Paul Walsh. 1987-1988 season, eight appearances. Number seven, he was signed by Kenny Dalgleish from Luton Town, I'm pretty sure it was.
00:09:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really good player, you know, really really good striker, quick, you know, good agility and a good finisher. But just think in that Liverpool side of the 80s, it was really, really difficult to get any kind of run of games and, you know, to push the likes of Ian Rush out or John Aldridge, John Barnes. It was just so many great, great attacking players. Peter Beardsley.
00:10:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I don't think he played as many times as... as he would have liked and and you know possibly that he he deserved. John Walk, Scottish international, well known by Ipswich fans because he had a really, really successful stint at Ipswich.
00:10:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
under Bobby Robson and you know he was signed by Liverpool off the back of his his performances at Ipswich which really really good team in the late 1970s and early 80s I think they won the UEFA Cup as well fantastic team they had and Yeah, i I do suspect that John Walk was probably signed by Liverpool because of the quality of his moustache.
00:10:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
His moustache was a high quality 1980s moustache. But, so you know, he was in competition with the likes of Graeme Souness and Terry McDermott and Ian Rush.
00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Bruce Grobel are, and they all had absolutely phenomenal moustaches. And Alan Kennedy as well, the list goes on. So

Acknowledging Overlooked Contributions

00:11:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
he probably didn't get as many appearances as he deserved as well.
00:11:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
But a really good goal-scoring midfielder. And he's been awarded two medals for nine appearances in the eighty three eighty four season and the eighty five eighty six season Steve Highway, another one, you know, legendary figure at the club. His name is still sung at every game at Anfield.
00:11:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
He made nine appearances in 1979, 1980 season, which gets him a medal. But he was a great player in the 1970s. You know, this kind of.
00:11:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
long-legged, rangy kind of winger and, you know, put in so many crosses for the likes of John Toshak and Kevin Keegan. And I think he was head of the academy for a while as well.
00:12:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
So good to see me him being honoured as well. Colin Irwin gets a medal for the 1979-1980 season, eight appearances. our Alec Lindsay, six appearances for the 1975-76 season.
00:12:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sammy Lee, a really you know big figure at Liverpool Football Club during the 1980s. And he got a medal for this 1979-80 season for seven appearances.
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
He went on to become a regular after that and and won plenty of league titles. But, you know, a really good player and he was well known for being an assistant to Big Sam Allardyce at Bolton and went on to become a manager in his own right as well.
00:13:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
posthumous medal was also presented to the family of Joey Jones for his 13 appearances in the 1975-76 season. Joey Jones, Welsh international left back.
00:13:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, he passed away earlier this year as well. So, Good to see these players being being honoured and deservedly. So Kenny Dalgleish presented the medals and he was quoted as saying, we're thrilled to have been able to celebrate this occasion at Anfield.
00:13:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was an emotional night for many and it's a real honour to have been able to source and present league championship winners medals to our forever Reds. Their role in winning one or in case or in one case, two of our 20 league titles deserves a medal, not only to mark their achievement, but also for playing such such a significant part in our club's decorated history for which we are immensely grateful.
00:13:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think that's the really important point here. It's not just that the likes of Steve Highway made nine appearances in that 1979-80 season, but his contribution during that 1970s period is just remarkable. And that's like I said, that's why his name is still sung in songs on the cop.
00:14:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, every every match, you know, the likes of Terry McDermott, he's he's not just been given this medal for the nine appearances in the 1975-76 season. It's for all those goals that he scored in those league title wins, European Cup finals, FA Cup wins.
00:14:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the same for Alan Kennedy and David Fairclough and all those players that played such a huge role in making Liverpool Football Club the club that it is today.
00:14:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, I think it's fantastic that they've been honoured in that way. And, you know, I think that should be a thing. I think the players in other clubs who...
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, have have played for football clubs and have made, you know, significant contributions from eras gone by, I think they should be honoured and respected.

Interview with Howard Gale on Racism in Football

00:15:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And given the kind of the medals that players pick up much, much easier in this modern age.
00:15:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just another thing just to to wrap up on. For Black History Month, Curtis Jones was speaking to Liverpool's first black player, which was Howard Gale.
00:15:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the video is on the Liverpool FC website. And I'd i'd really recommend giving that a watch because it's it's just a... Howard Gale comes across just so well, you know, just a... He was a fantastic player and he had to deal with...
00:15:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
just a huge amount of racism back in the 1970s and, you know, the early 1980s before things changed for the better. And, you know, some of the things that he had to experience, it's just, it's just mind boggling.
00:16:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And to hear him, you know, speaking to to Curtis Jones and to almost, and Curtis Jones being really kind of, And thankful and so respectful to Howard Gale and making him know that, look, you know, you players like you paved the way for the likes of Curtis Jones, for the likes of John Barnes before then and, you know, Paul Ince and all these kind of players that played for Liverpool.
00:16:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it was Howard Gale that had to really, really go through it's such a such a a tough time that he should never have had to go through. But unfortunately, society in the game was what it was back then. And thankfully, we just don't have that kind of situation.
00:16:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Certainly not in the football stadium. And so

Conclusion and Future Episodes

00:17:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's good to see. So I'd really recommend having a look at that video and and and seeing that interview with with Howard Gale.
00:17:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah, it's it's a real insight into just some of the challenges that these players went through in in in an era that that was just, it's just difficult to kind of grasp and to comprehend in today's age.
00:17:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
But so that is all for today. As I said, we've got a few other episodes lined up to preview the weekend's huge game against man Manchester United.
00:17:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, we'll be back on Monday to review the weekend's action. And hopefully, hopefully we'll be talking about a Liverpool win. We'll see you soon.
