00:00:00
Speaker
On this episode, it's the best of 2024 part. du We are playing clips of all your favorite moments from our fourth year in podcasting. All that and more on checkered past the Scott cast.
00:00:33
Speaker
What up checker heads welcome to checkered past the scot cast best of 2024 special part two I'm Robin that's my sister and co-host in and here for the ride is our engineer and the co-host of The Most Toast, Engineer Joey. I liked it better when you said part deux, like the hot shots. Hot shots, part deux. That's what I was doing. holy Fully deux. Fully, oh, right. That would have been a more 2024 reference. Should I do that? Sure. It's the best of 2024, fully deux. That's pretty good. Not bad. and It's not good, but it's not bad. Yeah, okay.
00:01:13
Speaker
Ah, so this is our second part of our Best Doves of 2024. We're back. If you didn't listen to part one, what are you doing? What's going on with you? Get it together. Why are you jumping in a part two? Why are you jumping in a part two? This is the musical. Yeah. This is the musical. We did that already. I know. Hey, go back and listen to our musical. It's only 15 minutes. Yeah, that was like two weeks ago. Yeah, that was two weeks ago. I sing, you get to hear my dulcet tones saying you're an asshole scabadook.
00:01:44
Speaker
Honestly, it better be number one next year. Or else. Or else I did all that work for fucking nothing. yeah For the joy of it. what yeah It was a fun movie was a wacky that wacky time.
00:01:59
Speaker
Yeah. We'll talk about it next year, probably more, but it's still fresh in our heads here, but here's what we're doing this year.

Voting Process and Listener Engagement

00:02:06
Speaker
Uh, we're counting down your top 10 episodes of 2024. I pointed like you can hear me point, but maybe you can. Some people can see it as their patrons.
00:02:15
Speaker
And ah the way it worked as we've done it for the last couple of years is we put out our survey for people who are listeners or on our social media or in our patron to vote on their top five episodes and we ranked it so if you.
00:02:31
Speaker
Picked a number one episode is worth five points. Number two is worth four. Whatever had the most epis are whatever i had the most points in the end is how we judged our top 10 for the year. We went from no or sorry December 2023 to the end of November 2024. That was the the years that were eligible. um And we got some ah very interesting episodes that were chosen.
00:02:55
Speaker
shenanigans There are shenanigans no shenasend theres there are more shenanigans this year than ever before um I've mentioned a couple of the shenanigans, but there are more to come And I'll call them out. So what we'll do is we'll be ah Announcing the number that's what I was gonna say we're gonna announce the number play a clip that's anywhere from like six to ten minutes of the episode and And then we'll come back and we'll chit-chat a little bit about it and count down from in this episode from five all the way down to number one. Big ol' number one. Number one is at the end of this episode, so skip ahead if you want. I mean, if you came in on part two without listening to part one, why don't you just skip to number one? Why don't you just figure it out? It'll be like 50 minutes probably. Probably. 50 minutes, 60, somewhere in somewhere there. Somewhere in there.
00:03:42
Speaker
Yeah, and then you'll get to know, you can tell all your friends, say, spoiler alert, I know the number one episode of Check or Pass. That is what they sound like. That's that's what I... the The person that do that? Yeah, yes for sure, that's exactly how they sound. and All right, let's kick it off with your...

Cover Songs Discussion

00:04:00
Speaker
Number five! As well as the Keep Your Receipt EP, this is Unity. you know I know, it was a little cranky last time. i was No, I don't like it.
00:04:13
Speaker
You walked that back before you finished it. Immediately. Within minutes. This is a hard bracket. This is a hard bracket. Yeah, for sure. For others, yes. For others. I love the original. I love the original and that's why I struggle with this one. See, I say the same joke every time. I mean, I also think Operation Ivy is a band that's better covered. I mean, that shit sounds like it was recorded by a bunch of kids. I don't know. I don't love it. I think that's what it was. There it is, buddy.
00:04:45
Speaker
Is that Dead Milligan?
00:04:50
Speaker
I don't know. I like this cover a lot. I like this cover too. It feels like a zebra head song. Which, yeah. accurate It really does. Well, I think they have a thing. Zebra head did the wraps on though. Which one was it? I think it was version that on the second live. That's on the line get with this last time I don't mind this part.
00:05:15
Speaker
This part i don't mind court I'll give him a call and see if they can just drag this part If you could Aaron I got that sound you're looking for but up but up but up but up up but That's cool, I met a girl with some really wacky ideas say about your songs ah I have an episode you should listen to. If it start opening up for like opening slots, I'm gonna be like tear down the fucking real big fish episodes. I don't want them to hear it. That's fine. I don't understand. I like tear down like... Tear it down. Tear it down. Tear it down. Can you just fucking erase it from the internet, guys? That's a possibility, right? I stood up for you. I stood up for you. I stood up for you. It's going beyond the paywall. We're making that money. Listen to how many times I stood up for you. That's what you'll say.
00:06:03
Speaker
but Remember, I was so good to you guys. It's going up on cover of the rockabilly classic by the stray cats appearing on the 2006 psychobilly tribute. Go cat go. This is Stray Cat Strut. I love this song. Get back to the rockabilly jokes we did on the first episode. I hate modern rockabilly, but this fucking slaps. I love like an old school rock and roll kind of. I also think the insides are very talented.
00:06:33
Speaker
Wow. Holy shit. I didn't know we were going to be lighting it up today. Brian said it out. That was too much. Tear it down tear down. Erase it from the internet please.
00:06:55
Speaker
This cover, the way it's produced is fucking awesome. It sounds really good. It's cool. I don't want to vote in this line because it's one. says is now This came him out around, we're not happy. Yeah. What was this? Oh, it's not a POM4 stray cat. Is that what it was for? Yeah. so Here's who's on that stray cat POM. The phenomenons, off-cat elliptic host, resurrect, Batmobile, coffin cats,
00:07:22
Speaker
The Hellbillies, Phantom Rockers, and all Spikability bands, and then real big fish. I mean, it makes sense. I mean, Phenomenauts were cool. I love that band. I love Oskatalypticos and Sweetie. I love Oskatalypticos and Sweetie. I mean, it was like the Phenomenauts took the idea of having old clothes.
00:07:43
Speaker
And then just instead having future clothes in there. That is cool. though but also like Space space ability, you know, that's fun. Space ability. It's been a while. I forgot about that band. They're a little Ramones Corey for you. Yeah. Oh, OK. Yeah. I think that I think that part's the part you're not going to enjoy. Yeah. Yeah. yeah Aesthetically, you might think they look cool. Yeah. ah yeah like i love a I love a band that ah plays music that sounds old but envisions them themselves as if they're in the future.
00:08:14
Speaker
You know what it's like to use a love for like, what kind of astral man or something like that? So you love doing this as a nostalgic. Sure. Yeah. um I think space fifties is common. Yeah. Because that's just the hard track thing, right? Future fifties. Yeah. Easy. Easy. Done. Done. Fucking done. Get Get down. Get out. This is shit. This is future fifties.
00:08:41
Speaker
I'm saying I do I think this is funnier because last time I didn't drink and now Everyone is and it's good. It's better. It's better. I know how I'm voting Wait till my heart leads me there, you know, okay. I know where you're voting three so two one unity. yeah oh ah okay okay but could This is a tough one for me. So so yeah in order to so now the way that we ah decide the that we do it again, we do a vote again, but it's based on the original
00:09:21
Speaker
Oh. Based on unity. So it's, which do you prefer? Stray cat strut by the stray cats or unity by operation. Okay. That's smart. yeah Let's go. Okay. Three, two, one. Stray cat strut. Stray cat strut.
00:09:39
Speaker
What? Yeah. drive like We got another time. Oh, you got to play for this, right? Yeah. Yeah. Let's go to the it's go to the discord. We'll go to the discord and then we come back, I suppose. ah Yeah, because we got some more stuff to do. So yeah, yeah, that's fine. We'll do a couple more brackets. We'll check what the discord says in a few minutes. Heard, heard. OK. I'm in

Musical Covers and Band Adaptations

00:10:01
Speaker
this discord, right? I think so. Yeah, you are. Yeah. Yeah. Get in there. Adam.
00:10:06
Speaker
All right, so the next one is a cover of the lead of Ford hair metal classic appearing on the 2000 compilation Metalliska. This is Kiss Me Deadly. I love this cover. It's so good. It's just really good. let me tell you what i did but What happened to give it to me? Did that get to go to the next round? Is that on this? It's the next, it's going up against it. hu Shit, fuck! This is tough.
00:10:30
Speaker
This is a really strong cover. Yeah. This fucking song is just so goddamn good. And I love the little like adding real big fishisms into it. Yeah. Yeah. And we're still in like their early lineup. So it still has that kind of like a little bit of anarchy in the studio. Yeah.
00:10:53
Speaker
Yeah, and they still had the team vibe where there's like, when you open up, turn the radio off, it was a giant folder of all their names and everything. Everybody was like featured. It kind of became Aaron and Scott as as things started getting wavy. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:11:16
Speaker
But again, we said it's just like they started as a hair metal cover band. So there's a reason why they can like rip those hair metal he's best at.
00:11:32
Speaker
Yeah, and and it it's ripe for having guitar or synth lines that can be replaced by horns yeah to make it real big fishy. Like the production of, the way the songs are written play well for the way they do covers, you know? And this is also in his double neck guitar phase too, so it's like perfect, right? Right. In the late 90s. That's funny. Yeah, and after after their second record, yeah, it was all double neck guitars.
00:12:01
Speaker
All right, it's going up against the aforementioned. Give it to me, a cover of the J-Gyle song that's a bonus track on the 2002 album, Cheer Up. Let's do it. Fucking love J-Gyle, man. I hate it. I love J-Gyle. It's so lame. It's so good.
00:12:16
Speaker
i agree it' like like it's inherently lame yeah you're like it's like awesome in the way that like if my dad and I were listening to it in the car we'd be rocking all the songs the songs that are bangers are unbelievable also did anyone watch waterman the online uh cartoon during the 2000s they used this song as the yeah yeah this cover fucking well that organ is so solid dude
00:12:55
Speaker
Whenever they have an organ in there, it really levels it up. Yeah. like they Anytime they have organ in whatever they're doing, I don't think the vocal sounds good. That's tough. Not enough vibrato. No, it's just not good on the ears.
00:13:10
Speaker
Damn. If someone told me my singing was not good on the ears, I would probably hear that recoil in shock. I'd be like, holy fuck you.
00:13:25
Speaker
ah That's wild. I said that one part. I said that if someone said that one part. I feel it's isolated into one part. He's a human being.
00:13:38
Speaker
We made a bad choice and now he's talking about one part. We all are human beings and make mistakes. yeah but The votes are in. Oh, the votes are in. oh Like a shitload. Yeah, that's okay. um Okay, so so so we got one for Stray Cat.
00:13:55
Speaker
We got one, so Aaron from Power Up said, because you said Stray Cat, he's saying unity. Fuck that, what the fuck? Johnny said Stray Cat, less offensive. He said Stray Cat is less bad. Kyle said Stray Cat, and then, um wow yeah, so it's mostly Stray Cat. Stray Cat is about the child song that they're singing.
00:14:21
Speaker
So straight cat strut makes it through. Maybe offensive on the ears. That's good. was good That was real big fish round two with ah Devin. kawa So for heptember this year, so twice a year, we do brackets where we you know do typical.
00:14:42
Speaker
you know, March Madness style bracket. So in March, we did the two-tonement, which was really fun. Two-tone single. And then we did real big fish covers for Heptember in September. It was more fun. It was wild. It was fun because it was silly. And it was

Bracket Episodes and Listener Feedback

00:14:59
Speaker
crazy. And all the choices were crazy. But it was not fun because of all the real big fish.
00:15:03
Speaker
Um, and so Devin K was a, he made the top 10 the first year he was on and I called it and Joey on the last episode said, I think he's going to make it in the top 10 again. It was right. hi Number five. Uh, and so there's some shenanigans with this one. One person came in and voted number one, number two, number three, number four, number five, all for Devin. So I just eliminated two through five still made it to number five. All, all things considered. So people loved this one. and ah Devin is the realist, honestly. What a fun guest. Another guest that gets our vibe really hangs well. He's antagonistic in the best possible way. um and just like like Even when he was on this episode, he was like, i just
00:15:48
Speaker
I didn't think you guys would want me back. We're like, yeah, of course course we want you back. We thought you wouldn't want to come back. cle We got plans for Devin King 2025. We got plans. We got plans. So that's not the last last. ah don't worry about it yeah We got plans. You guys have.
00:16:07
Speaker
Yeah, that's a fun one. That's a rare bracket appearance. Spoiler alert, it's the only bracket episode. Okay, so vibrato watch. Vibrato watch. Didn't make it. Vibrato watch did not make it. Although in a way it did because this episode was on there.
00:16:28
Speaker
Selene was on vibrato watch the entire she has been since Bracket in yeah in life in life. She's just now on the broader watch. Yes No vibrato King. Is that what you say when somebody's just like no vibrato at all?
00:16:43
Speaker
Yeah, who has just no vibrato at all? Me. I guess... You're just fishing for no vibrato. I want to be no vibrato prince, at least. You can't still you can't art spell um Robert was without a lot of letters from vibrato. You can go back and listen to Rob's lack of vibrato on our Christmas episode a couple weeks ago. Keep him from that episode. You can listen to me.
00:17:11
Speaker
I might have pulled it out a little bit. I might have forced it. I don't think it was a train. You should be going in a half foot pool. You might think you might have. If you relax, the vibrato happens. Not if you try. No, I forced it. I definitely sing from my esophagus, not from my diaphragm.
00:17:32
Speaker
All right, let's move on. This is your number. Oh, that was bad. But it's got to be. What's got to be. What the hell? It's got to be. You know, that's unfamiliar. Scary. Who are you? Oh, yeah. It is me.

Character Introductions and Storytelling

00:17:51
Speaker
It is. You might have heard of a scab, a yoga, but it is a scab, a yoga. This is very scary. Scab, a yoga, scab, a yoga.
00:18:01
Speaker
That's how you pronounce it? Scabayaga. Wow. Not scabayaga. What are you doing here? and Why are you so frightened? I'm the guardian of the forest. I fly in a mortar. I steal with a pesto. I use a broom to sweep away my thugs. I live in a little house. That's a lot of exposition. I turn your back and i actually yeah I actually only answer to the true and pure of heart.
00:18:29
Speaker
Oh, so I absolutely we will not fucking answer to jigs, God. That's for what? What? the wow And every time you ask me, I feel like we're going to get along here. I age one year. Every time you ask a question, every time you ask me and I answer, I age one year. So why do I not have a pure heart?
00:18:53
Speaker
I think you know you look inside you look in a fucking mirror sky and you ask yourself that fucking question I'm not fucking aging a year to fucking answer your dumbass so whoa Don't let him Call me with a little game Statements only I think my accent is contagious. I mean, iger one and I'm the one with the little games here, personally. I thought we were going to be playing games with Robin Saloon today. But Scabadook, Scabadook, I'm interested in. Yeah, Scabadook's a good guy. and From what I can tell, he's true and pure of heart.
00:19:35
Speaker
I do feel we're on the same page here, but I'm still pretty confused where Rob is because that's true. I'm not even here to do. I just want to take Rob to listen to 3-11's Voyager and that's it. Oh, 3-11's Voyager update. Which one's that one? That's the other one that Felty produced that Rob keeps shitting on. Oh, right. They're in the chicken house.
00:20:01
Speaker
the chicken and the chicken. What's a chicken? In the house, the drop insulin. I put them in the house. There's a little house in the woods. Okay, you see, you know, you know, you know about the house in the woods. Hey, little house, little house, turn your back, your front to me.
00:20:21
Speaker
Those are the birds to get into chicken house. Robinson and went to chicken house. They said the words, they go into chicken house, house with chicken feet, and they are there now until I can prove that they are true and pure of heart. So they're just hanging out like eating KFC? i i They might be. I don't know if Uber eats. I haven't had luck with it. They'd have to know the code. Maybe churches.
00:20:48
Speaker
I guess if you put it on the notes and Uber eats the phrase, if they can get past the bone fence and the three horses they pass. Like putting all the info so they can get into your apartment. First you walk to the forest and you see a white guy. I mean, you could just ask them to leave it outside the bone fence. That's not a big deal. You just leave it outside.
00:21:05
Speaker
I just say, like, leave it outside the door. That's actually pretty. But then how, how does Rob and Celine get out of house to bond fence to get food? Yeah, that's a good idea. How do they get out of that house? That's a great question. They asked me all of my symptoms. And the house is spinning, so they might be throwing up. Not a good idea for it. Do you ask yourself a question and you answer? Absolutely not. No. Okay. I am only 13, so be careful. Oh, wow. Okay.
00:21:32
Speaker
i So from what I know, so you were like nine when you showed up. Yeah, yeah yes. Wow. Okay. that Wait, you were. Wait, you were nine when you showed up. Yeah, at least. Wow. Okay. it had Now you're like 15.
00:21:50
Speaker
at least How old can you be? Like how old can you go? I need you to stop asking me questions. okay so and This is going to get rough when we get into the games. That's why I'm freely giving you so much information. So you don't have to ask me. I'm giving you the information. I'm assuming you're going to ask. And when I lay down at night, my nose is so big it touches the ceiling.
00:22:13
Speaker
Oh, wow. It is pretty big. Wow. I mean, I am having to like bob and weave around that schnauze ears when you're talking to me. But yeah, OK. I will eat you. I'm not above cannibalism. I need you. all Are you like but in our game now? Are you like, you know, killing people in the woods? Is that your whole deal? like Because that's kind of like our. if If they cross me, if I don't like them, if I change my mind after helping them, if they, yeah if they don't do the tasks that I set out for them and they bail on tasks. That's a dinner. That's how you do it. so You don't even know. do it You don't even know. I get it. home yeah these all know he's no yoga these yeah These young kids, I vibe with them, right? I'm going to tell you, um I feel like these kids.
00:23:01
Speaker
i' think i je i'm je alpha I don't think either of these guys have killed very many people, to be honest. I might be the only one who's actually eaten and killed people. Okay, let's hear about it. Who have you killed? Let's hear about it. What about all these questions? You trying to age me? What is going on? I asked a statement. I said, let's hear about it. I didn't ask a question. Let's hear about it. Okay. yeah I'm being respectful. No, thank you very much.
00:23:23
Speaker
Well, at one point, you know, there is this hero and he, you know, he comes to the woods and he sees a white horse and a guy dressed in white. And he's like, oh, that's weird. And then there's a red horse and a guy dressed in red. And he's like, that's kind of what you're doing. Then there's a black horse and a guy dressed in black. And then night falls and he comes up to me yeah and I didn't like the cut of his jib.
00:23:48
Speaker
So I could eliminate them and ate them buts like lot lot of courts like that sometimes people I give them tasks and they don't fulfill the tasks and I have no choice after I'm nothing but somebody who holds up that end of the bargain so if I say you don't do you do thing you don't do thing I eat you like I'm gonna eat you so you're kind of like a boss you're kind of like do this job or you get fired from life hey they come to me i'm just in the woods in chicken hut they're the ones who get told to come to kabaaga ah okay in at least 20 right now oh wow i am in need of three more horses for a project i'm working on can i have that red black and white horse you're talking about you think i mean to throw up the people on the horses that's ah that's in the fabric of time
00:24:38
Speaker
don don Don't even play into that. I have a question though. I'm so sorry that it's a question. um What is your opinion on the rainforest cafe? That's very important to me. Stunning. I love it. I love it. I'm a guardian of the forest. I also like the rainforest. And I think what they do is they really get people to think about the forest. And they think, wow, it is really nice. And all these animals, they're good. Do you prefer the animals? You know what's good news is that you don't have to order off the kids menu after today.
00:25:12
Speaker
That will be nice. I think I can get into the bar after today. I think I can get one of those delicious cocktails on that infamous cafe menu. Take home a cup? Like thunderstorm or animatronic animals? That's a question.
00:25:28
Speaker
I know, but I got to know the answer. well What's your favorite? I can tell you a story. Sure. Please. So one day ah there is a hero and he's driving through the forest. Okay. And so he goes and there's a white horse. And he's like, that's pretty weird. um nice He goes a little further. He sees a red horse with a person dressed in red.
00:25:55
Speaker
And he's like, that's pretty crazy. and He goes to the end and it's a black horse. First interest in black night falls. And then he gets to my house and I don't like the cut of his chips, so I eat him. And ah that night it was a beautiful thunderstorm and I'll never forget it. So thought I love thunderstorms. Sweet. I got to say this. I think like I think I have some hero energy. I could easily go through these three horses. Absolutely not. Absolutely not.
00:26:27
Speaker
Jigsaw really liked those three horror movies. Jigsaw just guys wanted to be cool. ah So this is our third year in a row, I think, doing the the Scoloine episodes where Jigsaw was a character.

Halloween Episodes and Sound Effects

00:26:43
Speaker
Yes, because Jigsaw was the the original it was originally jig ska and then which week which came out of a twitter thing and then skabadook show and then skabadook was shining and then it was skaba yaga's year yes so i got it so a little bit of backstory on this and then i got a question for you but yeah so these are all like fully improvised the actual i think the the reason why we started this was joey had this idea where he's like
00:27:08
Speaker
we should do an oops all games for ah however Halloween. So we just use this framing device where I come in character, quote unquote, I'm not an improviser by trade, of course, i may I'm trying my best. um And I played a bunch of games with Selen and Joey and it went over very well. So every year we've been bringing it back and everything seems to keep doing really well. And yeah, cool, Chris from Scott Punk International.
00:27:35
Speaker
does the scaba duke and he who was at was realized he was realized he came from pod reality into real reality he has three he had three appearances on the podcast this sad this year. And I guess the musical was one, but it won't count for the next best of. right um But yeah, the Skaba Yaga was I think Joey's idea. I thought of the concept. You didn't think of how it was pronounced. No, absolutely not. so I gave you the concept and you ramped it. So tell but it's oh what was your... process with what what it was your influence improv to improv yeah well my influence i just googled and then i made a bunch of notes and i came across the paper piece of paper with the notes on it like ah recently it's kicked around somebody and i'm like this is insane yeah it was pretty cryptic it was pretty cryptic i just googled about i watched you know what i watched a bunch of youtube videos nice i did i actually watched like a bunch of lore
00:28:41
Speaker
lore videos and then ah that accent was already in the bag from D and&D. That's my Dregona voice. Yeah. And it's like you're just trying to find like a non-offensive accent in that's the year of 2024. Yeah. ah Just a vague, somewhat Slavic, somewhat Eastern European. Yeah. Definitely whitish. Definitely whitish. There's no question that you're white. Yeah, that's what I'm going for.
00:29:09
Speaker
those are the inspirations But they like at this point it's like the dichotomy has been like, you know, Jigsaw is like this like in celly type guy that is really like not good at being a serial killer.
00:29:23
Speaker
He sucks. He sucks. And then the Skaba Duke is like more of like like and like a liberal college guy. He's for the people. But he's like a little out of touch. And then Selena is supposed to come along and be like, I actually get shit done. I you know i kill people. And the Skaba Yaga is like a young, cool hit person. And yeah, it's cool.
00:29:44
Speaker
We all um are exaggerated versions of ourselves. I don't know if I'm thinking of a lot of incel energy. And if that is the energy I'm giving off, then I need to rethink my life. You're not. not.
00:30:02
Speaker
but anyway i' i may in the trolley nature maybe maybe in the tro the trolley yeah not the insult ah the trollinginess how about that in every great acting roll there's a little bit of yourself and it's a i know I know not the the bit episodes as they as they're called are not always everyone's cup of tea, but I am always so excited that every year they seem to keep getting more and more positive feedback from people. I feel like we get better at it. Yeah. yeah and I think that's the other thing too, or like less crappy at it as time goes on. so it's very It's very fun. It's very fun, and it's fun for us to do. so We'll keep doing it as long as people keep responding to it.
00:30:43
Speaker
As long as we keep coming up with- Children of comedy bang bang. As long as we keep coming up with scop on murders. And when those run out, well, then we'll start. And with that, well, let's take a break. And when we get back your top three.
00:31:03
Speaker
Welcome back to Checkered Pass. It's the best of 2024 part two. And this is the top three. It's the moment you've all been waiting for. So let's listen to it. Here is your number three having a space to go through. Fucker. I swear to God. He talked about the rainforest cafe one more time. That's where I'm going to lose it. That place is sick though. Halloween. how areeen Okay. Rainforest cafe burger. Delicious. You look around and you're like a palm tree. I like palm trees. Look over there. Like, Oh, some kind of animal. This place is cool.
00:31:35
Speaker
Scalpeduke, hey, what what do you do think about these episodes? Why do you do them so often? um Actually, the thing is that um doing these episodes makes me happy. um There are a lot of things that make me mad. I mean, that's why I kill people, including Duke Scott. He makes me crazy, but also I kind of love him and I will be sad if he was gone. And um my momma Duke taught me that it was important to do things that make you happy and spend time with the people that are important to you and also make you happy. And um all of you,
00:32:08
Speaker
even Stuart Jiska make me happy to be around. And um so it's important that I do these things because um you're important to me and it makes me happy to be around this show. So, um yeah, but also fuck you, Jiska. Oh, the the sigils and the vape pens glowing again. I've got to get this symbol in here and see what we see where the next place it takes me goes. Yo, you may want to look at a piece of paper.
00:32:40
Speaker
Oh no! that's Now the whole thing's burning! um It's going up a plane! You dumb motherfucker! Yo, you just look at that piece of paper! You fucking idiot!
00:32:59
Speaker
I just need one more symbol, one more symbol. well You know what? I'm just brute forcing it. I'm gonna try them all!
00:33:19
Speaker
On Checker Past, the sea change beer fan cast. Deers, beers, beer, beer, beer. On Checker Past, the bean cast. What? No, you won't silence me. Fuck off. It means forever. You can't stop it. On Checker Past.
00:33:37
Speaker
the cloth-ender industrial cast.
00:33:44
Speaker
A long time ago, way back in history, when all there was to drink was bubble and cobble of tea.

Multiverse and Creative Concepts

00:33:53
Speaker
Check it past the 1800s dandy cast. Oh, Jacob, past the Irish pie punk cast. They're after me, Lucky Char.
00:34:04
Speaker
checkard pa ah docks or cronxcast Oh my god, it's a giant robot Wayne Gretzky! Ahh! On Checkered Pass to the pirate cast. Ahoy, matey. Checkered Pass, the beer shanty cast. B-b-b-beer shanty. You know, we're all here to give up.
00:34:35
Speaker
man that's so many different scaldy verses and not the right one all right joey it made it that was a cute that was a cute up that was a well edited up because it was pretty wild it was it was a bonkers that was a bonkers episode so what that was it wasn't clear from the clip probably wasn't the year of joey out of context super out of contact it his nose so every year we do a christmas episode as well or a holiday episode the first time we did it we did ska rouge which was that salin was being visited by the ghost of ska whatever ska present and then joey was like a cowboy
00:35:25
Speaker
yeah's right ah Anyway, that was a weird one too. That one didn't make the cut. um But this one did. This was the second year episode which would qualify for the Best Duds. That was...
00:35:36
Speaker
I swear we talked about it so much and there was so much planning that went into it. ah It was supposed to be like the multiverse of madness. It was ah a parody of like the MCU and Joey had a magic vape pen and was going in and out of alternate universes of checkered past. And so that part was the one where he was like trying to figure out the final clue or whatever. we were we were That was a journey through the Scultiverse. That was a journey through the Scultiverse and it had a lot of guest people speaking on there and like we just did a bunch of dumb bits and there was a lot of extra work with the the the editing and the sound effects and stuff. And Slangcheng was in there. It's like Joey did all of the editing for it. Uh, so that was a, that was a Joey episode. That was my piece of resistance. Number three, Joey. That's crazy. I can't believe it. Congratulations, Joey. Thank you. On your win on bronze. a bronze medal episode. It was, it was top three, like the whole time. People have been voting. it It's got a lot of votes. That's awesome.
00:36:40
Speaker
So Joey fans, I would say golden. Like if that episode doesn't make any sense, just go listen to it. It's only 30 minutes long, like it's less than I think 25 minutes long. Yeah. Our, our, our holiday specials are usually pretty, they're pretty short because there's so much work just to get like that much. Like this last one we did was only 15 minutes. Cause it's a musical, putting all that together was really hard when I was a kid, you got 22 minutes of Christmas schedule or Christmas special. Right. That's true. I don't know i think Rudolph doesn't even crack an hour. Yeah. Right. yeah like fifteen the thirty So 30, it's all good.
00:37:11
Speaker
what ah What a great time that was. Yeah, very fun. So silly. Thank you. All right, we're on to it. You're on to it. Number two.
00:37:23
Speaker
You know, I was just kind of drifting through COVID and then this... um this band that i was following the third rates because i was i've been a fan of like corry's work because corry's like an animator he's like an animator yeah that's why they got a a big bump when they started yeah that's why they have a big community yeah yeah browns community and yeah yeah had a yeah he and he and in ah his stuff was very nsfw yeah this stuff nowadays was really and nsfw but i remember him because he was like animating for a machinima show on with like um these other youtubers and i was and um and he did real big fish's video he did the real big fish video and he like given
00:38:08
Speaker
if you give him credit for how much people he got into ska he would talk about it on his like podcast that he did like 10 years ago like yeah i just really fucking love really big real big fish he did that music video and he made the third rates which brought a lot of fucking ska fans out to live shows during that tour like He added a lot of fucking randos into like new tone.

Touring Experiences and Band Dynamics

00:38:29
Speaker
And there are a lot of closeted like Corey fans that are like, oh, well, people kind of hate the third rate. So we're not going to say like we kind of rock with Corey.
00:38:41
Speaker
And I will say, I toured with them. I lived with them for a whole ass month on tour. And I could fucking dig up a bunch of dirt, but they were genuinely one of the best musicians. They treated me the best out of any other organization that have ever had me on. They paid me well. That's nice to hear. They fucking fed me. And they treated me like a fucking person like no other band has ever before that. They were nice to us when we were nobody's. They were super nice to us. They were really nice to us.
00:39:10
Speaker
shut out door a shot cor shut out we go shout cory Wasn't on the pod that was the one that was opposed to y'all talk to Levi and and Dylan So we did not we did not talk to ah the horny animator. No, we talked to Dylan the main what kind of and NSFW The thing is he does a lot of there's a lot of nudity He does a lot of fucking im muity but like I honestly he I was living with him and he was working on on art or music 24 seven if he wasn't that's cool working on music or like figuring out the horn parts also he went into this whole tour being like ah how can we play in the horn line is different and then I play it and I'm like Cory you learned it the whole set in the wrong keys because he's didn't really like learn trombone
00:39:56
Speaker
um conventionally. He like learned everything by ear. So if he has an idea in his head of how it sounds on the horn, he just makes it up. So he was re-learning the set. On top of that, I was teaching the rest of the horn line for that band. And it was a miracle that we fucking even played anything in the tune. But when we weren't working on music, he was working on his anatomy. He was like, I haven't really drawn on paper in a while, so I'm going to be practicing. um And he would just show me like,
00:40:24
Speaker
this nude woman. and And he'd be like, what do you think of of this ah anatomy? It's good, man. ah what are you I don't know. I've never had this dynamic before. I think there's not enough folds in the labia. I see the majora, but not the menorah. You need to bring out the menorah. Frankly, the detail is troubling. I think you need to focus on the big picture.
00:40:49
Speaker
Yeah, the areolas the big pictures distract the aryolas are du small I appreciate the fact that like it's like an art form to that food and oh definitely He treats it like that and like, you know Have your reservations about it Kayla Kaylee you've been silent oh no it's and we're dead and know ho's been talking It's been great we yeah you're in the third rates thing Yeah, that was, I mean, that that was unexpected. You were going to talk about it. Appreciate it. Appreciate it. Love the tea. I'm going to throw it over to you like this was a part of your, your conceit on, on coming on the pod. So, uh, like what you you, you sent me the thesis and of what you wanted to speak on. Um, and maybe to paraphrase, but it's about the scene in general or how we got to where we are. Uh, yeah. Talk to us about how you got to where you are. Yeah.
00:41:45
Speaker
Yeah, okay. So right, we just like basically this is a kind of a retrospective about SPI Fest and you know, all the all the events of that but also like what preceded it and what makes it what makes it very important to me.

Ska Community and Emerging Artists

00:42:02
Speaker
Because SPI Fest is it feels like the moment when I became real and I I know that sounds ludicrous, except unless you understand what I'm talking about, but like I don't know, so much of the like ah nervousness and inhibitions I used to have are not really so present anymore. And ah the usual defense mechanism that I use to humble myself, which is hating myself, isn't like working as well anymore.
00:42:27
Speaker
So that's fun. Finally. Right. I fuck with me. You understand? yeah But right. So what I want to talk about is like, the thing about SPI Fest that I really love is like, if we look at I'm going to do this. I'm going to paint this dichotomy. you'll You'll have fun. You'll be safe. Don't worry. It's not going to be that bad. If I think about like the difference between um SPI and bad time records, it's sort of like bad time records is made up of people who were kind of like veterans in the scene. You know, they're young veterans, but they're veterans nonetheless, you know, like people in the late 20s and 30s making like, you know,
00:43:05
Speaker
music and they all have bands and stuff like that, right? Even Eichler's is like not just an online weirdo. He knew a lot of people. He worked with Mike Park and stuff like that. And then Scott Punk International was like, oh, we're going to make a Scott community out of all these fucking dorks. They're like, nobody else is seriously. And even at the beginning,
00:43:28
Speaker
Didn't people say that Chris collected trans people on Pokemon? Who the fuck said that? Trans musicians like Pokemon? Who said that, Ian Garland? I think it was Christine. I think it was Christine. Anyways, sorry. It's not a joke that she would make. She does love Pokemon.
00:43:43
Speaker
um But then I was like, that's really kind because I'm like also that just speaks to like a community that's not lifted up and seen this much. So I think it speaks to Chris wanting to lift people up who don't get the opportunity. Sorry, that was the point I was making. I love being compared to a little field mouse that you can catch with a fucking ball. I really like that. no but But he sees those specialness in people.
00:44:08
Speaker
and oh like and Chris is really stinky, but he sees the magic in people, Chris. That's the fuck point that I wanted to get to, right? so like Yeah, at first, like i you know I did the pre-care album with SPI. I think it might have been like the first original release that they had that wasn't like a reissue.
00:44:27
Speaker
Yeah. And, you know, that was like Beth's idea. She was like, Oh, you should fucking do this fucking thing. Right. And actually, I want to circle back from that because, again, SPI is kind of like all these internet dorks that somehow found a place. Now, there's more people than just internet dorks. We do have, you know, like young Costello and Hans Gruber in the diehards, but it does seem very internet dork focused. And yeah like,
00:44:55
Speaker
it's It's fucking funny because like you know the pre-cure album, when I made that, I really thought I was just making it for 20 people. And when Bess said, you should you know do this on Scott Punk International, the label, because you know cool Chris, he's making a label. And I'm like, yeah, fucking sure, whatever. I barely care. I barely care. you know and because Again, being like a little online weirder, I really thought that my stuff was like way too niche and it wouldn't make sense to anybody, not even like nerds because like if you liked the Pretty Cure franchise, you'd be like, wait, this has nothing to do with that. It's like when those kids in The Simpsons, they went to watch Naked Lunch and then Nelson comes out the theater and he's like, I can't think of two things wrong with that sign, right? It doesn't have anything to do with Princess Preak here.
00:45:43
Speaker
so But right, it's just like, you know, that sort of thing. And like, I should just say, to reiterate, like, the importance of like, cool Chris in like this whole nerdy Scott thing, and also the importance of tape girl because she was like, a massive inspiration to me. And like, two of the freakin songs on the pre here album to me are pretty much like, tape girl pastiche is the way that I arranged them. And those would be like, since 1989 and princess pre here. But yeah, so like,
00:46:11
Speaker
You know, we do that whole thing and then Chris starts to sign like a lot of people. where in my head I'm thinking, some of these people don't sound like they're ready to put out a record yet. This is like kind of weird. I feel like this is too early. But then I certainly like, in the last couple of months, I've actually started to see the vision and I'm like, oh, wait, here's what's happening. Like, Chris is noticing this thing that became very apparent to me at SPI Fest 2, which is that, so like, Javi's been talking a lot about new tone and like the death of new tone and post new tone.
00:46:45
Speaker
So like, what is new tone? Again, the bands, especially like starting with the bad time record stuff, where all these people who were veterans who were playing in the scene when Scott was dead and they got into it before, while before it was dead, right? And so then Scott like comes alive again. And then we have all these people who are either getting into Scott for the first time, or you know, they're just like coming yeah back to it after a while and they're really stoked on it. And so, but now you have a lot of people who are like,
00:47:13
Speaker
They want to make a record, and they have a vision, and maybe they're not that experienced yet. But somebody has to take a chance on these people. Otherwise, we're just going to be recycling the same musicians. and another think too is the way chris or the way the community yeah I'm not surprised this made it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I could. Yeah. I figured also based on going from three to two, I have no fucking clue what one's going to be. Yeah. ah But yeah, what an intro. We were genuinely just listening to the conversation because it's just like a really super interesting conversation. As soon as Kaylee started talking, I was like, oh, I got to shut up. Yeah.
00:47:53
Speaker
Yeah, it's uh, so that was our three-year anniversary episode and that was an episode that came out of SPI basically because Bobby and Kaylee had become friends ah Over the course of the last year before that but also they really connected there and they got it that they wanted to come on and basically Share the history of the current SPI scene and kind of give a bit of a timeline um And it's a a really fascinating ah Conversations about an hour and a bit Um, but it's, it had, they had so much stuff that they wanted to talk about that they were like, Oh, I really wish it was even longer. Like they could have gone for two, three hours probably based on the amount of stuff that they yeah wanted to talk about. Um, but, uh, the two of them together are just like incredible, uh,
00:48:42
Speaker
ah people to just like, they they bounce off each other and they're, they they they have each other's back in terms of like what they're trying to say. Yeah. And they have on the same page the lot of stuff and they have differing opinions, but like a unified vision. Yes, definitely. And so it's interesting to hear kind of them talk about the ska scene yeah as a whole. Very interesting to listen to. and so i so I guess i should I should mention that if you don't know who they are, so Kaylee's Kamoi, which mentioned that was the first SPI release and actually the show was the first interview that they did after being signed. Kamoi has been on the show every year for the last four years basically. Heck yeah. so and Then almost every time makes the best of.
00:49:28
Speaker
I think there's only one year where she didn't make the best of. And then Javi is the... Worst year. Yeah. Worst year. Worst year. And then Javi's the band leader for the marijuana brass. And also is featured on our back alley interviews. And also is featured on every band at SBI2.
00:49:46
Speaker
Yeah. So pretty much just jumped on stage and played trombone with like every fucking band. Uh, so to just killer people and just a long form conversation, very outside of format. Um, I know Joey kind of mentioned it while we were listening that, um, a lot of episodes on and number one will be no exception. Uh, but a lot of number, uh, episodes and on the top 10 are very abnormal episodes. They're a lot of like non-standard for one reason or another, yeah which is very cool. So.
00:50:16
Speaker
Yeah. Thank you. A lot of our bit apps made it. A lot of the bit. Do you feel good? Always. i I'm salty because of the one year where pet somebody wrote that the bits are stinky and I said, well, you'll never let that one. I'll never let it go because I was like, no, the bits are what I like. thinkky They smell great. I don't like the way they smell. Remember when groups were on the show for the first time?
00:50:39
Speaker
And they're telling us the story about how they played like half scone, half punk kinda at the

Creative Content and Humor

00:50:44
Speaker
beginning. And then they played at a brewery. They liked that. And they were like, you should not play Scott. And they were like, fuck you. We're going to go full Scott. It's kind of what we do with the bits. That's right. You just like challenged us way too much to go double deep on yeah on on these bits. And it worked out. and it worked out and it get better at them yeah and this episode was a non-standard episode that had no bits yeah was yeah this was a bit free non-standard episode yeah we're open to both yeah we'll do both i just you know i don't want to get you a scott cast that can do both i just had some labia bits and then i shut up yeah i i gotta say labias get brought up a lot on the show thank god really yeah sweet mostly by slim yeah yeah and it would be a little weird if i was talking about the most experienced
00:51:31
Speaker
all right Here we go, it's the moment we've all been waiting for, your episode. number one welcome back to checkered past we're here with the real banana man h and we're going through a little bit of sky history uh talking about some of the best banana themed clips uh from the yesteryear um we got clip four here uh mr h uh would you like to uh tee us off nope nope let's just just go right in all right but no introduction necessary speaks for itself okay here we go
00:52:52
Speaker
You robbed it, sir.
00:52:57
Speaker
I'm not doing the accent. I'm not doing it. Adrian Brody's the only one who's allowed to do that accent. And Chet Hanks.
00:53:13
Speaker
And Uzi Mommy.
00:53:44
Speaker
Oh yeah. Banana. I knew that was coming. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Banana. I just... Banana. Do you think the minions are... What do you think of the minions? What do you think of the minions? What do you think of the minions? What do you think of the minions? I am not familiar with them. Right, that's past 97. You'd love them. I think you'd love them. Man, you're missing out. They like banana. Yeah.
00:54:05
Speaker
And they're respectful of bananas. Yeah, they love them. Yeah, they they worship them. They worship. you but They revere bananas. Okay. Also, a ass they're a little yellow guys. If they met you, they might follow you around and support you. But they don't dress. They don't. They don't dress like bananas. No, they kind of dress like Mario Brothers, to be honest, but they're little yellow guys. That's allowed. Yeah, that's in the 90s. That's acceptable. Yeah. Yeah, I guess you know what the Mario Brothers are. Yeah, they kind of look like ah John Lake Wazamo in that movie.
00:54:33
Speaker
the mario brothers yeah that would have you you be familiar with you yeah be familiar with that super mario luian and luigi mario luigi mario yes um yeah So talk to us about, I mean, that sounded like Memphis Goughleys. They're not from Banana County. They're from the other side. and No, yep, yep. We finally got some representation from the East Coast. right ah they were They were kind enough to say, hey, we want to write a horn line after your namesake. Right. After your likeness. And I said, brothers have at it. Brothers.
00:55:08
Speaker
Were they your brother? No. Oh, okay. No, I was speaking metaphorically. I see. Yeah. No, I just didn't know. What's your family's situation? Like, like, does Banana run? Getting right into it. Well, I wonder if Banana runs in the family. Well, he said his wife left him. What's your family's situation? It's a little heavy. I just, we talked a lot about a lot of heavy stuff today. That's true. That's true. Okay. What's your family's situation, Banana Man? My family was- Fan-bananaly? Fan-bananaly? Bananaly? Harvested. Harvested just a little too early. Oh. Okay. Plucked from the tree? Yeah. They were all taken from me.
00:55:45
Speaker
um I was the only one who left in the bunch out alive. Oh, what's left of my family is what you see before you. Well, wow. how wow This was heavy heavy. I was not expecting heavy. like yeah that You're like, let's just dive in there. And then this is this is what I get. What was the last thing you said to your family before they were harvested? Sorry. boy but No, that's a good question.
00:56:09
Speaker
That's a good question. We want to know what your last words were. You've been watching so many hard-hitting YouTube documentaries. I'm really numb because I've been watching a lot of YouTube true crime Caesareans just by my sense of humor. It's been a little warped. I said I will get the banana name out there. I will get the banana name out there. So you were able to say your goodbyes.
00:56:33
Speaker
Yes. Would you say? widge andt Very slowly. Would you? Very so slowly. Someone was just slowly plucking them from the trees that harvest. Now would you say mission accomplished? You got the banana name out there. I will say a mission accomplished. Okay. Great. You know who else said that? Precisely. Yeah. Okay. another you know Another great American also said mission accomplished.
00:56:53
Speaker
Yes. Another great American was in the movie Mission Impossible. We won in Iraq. Yeah. Don't let don't let those lines. OK, I don't know if I can let that uncheck. So that was a little spicy. Spicy like a banana. Yeah. Spicy. Spicy like a banana. That's what we say. That's the banana in the banana. Spicy like a banana. Spicy like a banana. That's actually kind of a funny saying. Like something's not spicy like spicy like a banana.
00:57:22
Speaker
That's why we say it. say we um That's the banana laugh. That's right. um yeah Mitch, what do you have anything to prep for this next clip, or should we just get it going? Oh, well, this was from one of those those original Banana County bands, okay or at least adjacent.
00:57:52
Speaker
The old BC, Banana County, right? The old Goldfinger Banana. This is a song that everybody knows and loves, but they don't know the the original version. And I'm about to demo that for you a little bit here today.
00:58:28
Speaker
it's like a theme song. I mean, it's right there. Thank you. Yeah, I think I remember. It was right here from the beginning. That would have rocked if that was in Tony Hawk. pro I was going to say, were you were you angered by the fact that they changed the lyrics and then it blew up with Tony Hawk?
00:58:44
Speaker
No, I got it. I I. You got it. I am the one who sent them to cease and desist. Whoa. Oh, OK. On Tony Hawk. We had a little bit of a settlement, me and Goldfinger Banana. But we're cool now. Now me and me and Feldy. You and Feldy. Two bananas in a bunch. As far as heroes are concerned, you're on par with Superman in my books. So when I. So very kind of you to say. I've noticed something also with these Banana County bands is that You know, you look at Darren's Coconut Ass, which had a monkey. Monkeys for Nothing, but the chimp's for free by a real big fish. There's real monkey obsession. And what do monkeys like to eat? What do monkeys notoriously like to eat? How do you comment on that? This is my Larry King voice. How do you comment on that? There is nothing more frightening.
00:59:35
Speaker
to a banana than a monkey. Yeah, and right. Sometimes we have to face our fears. I see some time. Some of us like horror movies. Right. Some of us like YouTube, true crime. Sing about or make art ah about monkeys. Yeah. That thing which scares us the most. That's like bad. Do you think the NFT makers of like those chimps are bananas? Bored ape. Bored ape is a fellow banana man. who's expressing his fear through art of the gates. Through NFTs, yeah. Oh, i I created. Oh, yeah, yeah. Right, right. Oh, it's coming together. I should have guessed. Look, we have to talk after the pod. Yeah.
01:00:17
Speaker
Yeah. I'll get you in on the ground floor, please. I believe we're on floor four or five, six at this point. I don't know about ground floor. I feel like things are really about to hit. Now it's going to pop up. We can't talk. Why is this what's making me laugh?
01:00:39
Speaker
now so silly butana man butana man butana so cho ah oh t is very funny though This is we've never I think broke down the curtain of the real banana man age no i was An episode we threw out in the middle of the year with zero Like literally was way funnier than i remember.

01:01:23
Speaker
yeah Big ups. ah god We love Houston. um We see him every year at the SBI Fest and stuff. and I don't remember how this all came about.

Guest Appearances and Future Plans

01:01:33
Speaker
it At some point it was mentioned that he wanted to do something like this. yeah Okay, so he originally we had we had asked him if he wanted to be on the pod forever and ever ago.
01:01:42
Speaker
Right. And his original idea. To do something stupid. We wanted him to do something stupid. I'm not going to just reveal his original idea because we'll never get to it because it's insane. But his original plan was to go back through, figure out where we stopped doing omissions and scarrections. Oh, yeah. And do all of the omissions and scarrections from that point until the current time. That was his original concept for an episode. And it was so insane. And then we had this other idea, which I don't know, actually, we might I might not reveal that other idea. Okay, it's a it might end up being something at some point, because it was pretty funny. um But then I had this concept of
01:02:26
Speaker
What if the banana costume guy was but was a guest? And I just kind of let him go with that. I just sort of gave him that idea. it were like And I had a kind of a couple kind of character idea points and he just ran with it.
01:02:43
Speaker
And the episode, i when I heard about it, I said, the best way to do this episode, and I told Joinslyn this when we started, I was like, we have to play it fucking straight. Like, yeah like we have to play it as straight as possible. We have to believe. We just had to believe. We had to believe. And and ah Houston had all these clips that he had where he said, like,
01:03:06
Speaker
that they admitted the banana lyrics to them so you would do like banana karaoke over all this it was the episode is absolutely jam-packed with banana puns we could not stop ourselves there isn't anything on the thursday internet that has more banana puns it i don't think and there's nothing left in the tank if you ask me like you everything by the end i was like this is the most but you can hear us even in this clip like like trying not to laugh because we're trying to stay serious and big ups to cut man because the yeah if you want to go if you become a patron and you watch it uh and then it it is not as but in yeah you're not as tight it is a different experience yeah it's just us laughing at absolutely everything just like a lot of
01:03:58
Speaker
And there are bits that I think ended up on the cutting room floor, so if you're into it, that might be worth it. But there is shenanigans with this. Yeah, there was a campaign. A town went hard on the internet to get his loyal followers to vote and just put spicy like a banana. And there was a lot.
01:04:21
Speaker
And I, I, I had to say, you know what, big ups, like proud of you for doing that. You worked it. Yeah. You know what? So I let this for you. And that episode is awesome. And I had so much fun doing it. And I would love to do it again next year, but different concept. We can't do the banana man. I don't know if we have, don't know if he'll come back. Maybe live, maybe live, maybe live, maybe live, maybe live.
01:04:50
Speaker
But that's the top 10. Wow. what ah What a top 10. What a roller coaster. um um I'm very happy with this top 10. It's wild. And it's a very different, a lot of like different kinds of episodes on there. I posted at one point.
01:05:06
Speaker
ah Someone said, just just pick all the episodes that I'm in or something. And I reposted them and I was like, yeah, totally just fuck with our metrics. Like go for it, we don't care. yeah And this absolutely like, I have no idea what people want. ah You know, yeah other than more banana man, I guess. There were a couple episodes that did surprisingly, like did did some numbers, but never didn't make the top 10. I think being true to ourselves.
01:05:33
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. So we got a couple of honorable mentions. Yeah, I got some honorable mentions. So King Prawn was very close. That was the next one. Oh yeah, that was a great one. Yeah, which I loved that episode. That was with Sonic Boom 6. And that was later in the year for sure. And usually we have a later bias. Yeah. But this year it wasn't. It was a big mix across the whole year, which was kind of awesome. Yeah.
01:05:54
Speaker
uh blue meanies uh was up there oh hell yeah those um a couple of dnd episodes for sure big d one with uh runaway ricochet the flaming tsunamis episode with chris ruckus um those all were pretty close um a couple primers almost made it. Oh, wow crack rock steady primer and the reggae rock primer both put up some decent numbers. Sick. Um, I hope the reggae rock primer put up those numbers because of the cover I did for it because that one was pretty, pretty great. Um, or the crack rock steady primer. That cover was awesome. I still have that sticker on my phone. yes I love that. Um, I, so Javi
01:06:35
Speaker
Guest who said there he said that our primers are our best episodes and said and it has recommended that people just listen to those to get it to get into the podcast. so ian garland is a big man of Yeah, the primers primers I think the primers go really well. That's that's gonna be those are the types of episodes that probably will never make a top ten But will always have like loyal listeners like it's just one of those like yeah Yeah, and they're fun to put together and we have a lot coming this year So I'm gonna do more primers, but I also want to mix it in with some ah More mainline episodes the salads put up wacky numbers how bonus. Hell. There's a few people that were like that said but just' hell yeah there's a couple of people who said that it fucked with them I saw in in there. So um and ah Yeah, I wanted the the community records episode to go bigger. It didn't put up the numbers I was expecting but we got so much ah Good feedback. I feel like it made of a rabid rabid fan base. Yeah, you know It also may have been just a little too late because literally the survey came out a day after that episode dropped. So it might have been just bad timing. Yeah. But yeah, that was kind of like this year for episodes and that was our top 10. So um I just want to give some thank yous. So I want to say thank you to Salint.
01:07:53
Speaker
whoa and i want to say thank you to engineer joey engineer joey uh did a lot of uh engineering this year i engineered a lot uh so and you were on uh almost every episode and you did a lot of stuff at the live show so big thank you ah ah and salin was uh It was great. Yeah. What are you talking about? Slim runs our Instagram. Thank you, Rob. Oh, well, no, but yeah. Yeah. I did just give you all the other stuff, everything else. I do some stuff. Most of it. Truly most of it. Thank you to Arianne, who does a lot of extra stuff for us and was on the road with SPI and ran our merch booth and a bunch of other things, got a lot of our merch together. Which was very cool. Big thank you to Keeling. This was a big year for Keeling. Keeling did a lot of extra music for us, ran those D&D episodes. He lent us his interface so that our SPI appearance could sound as good as it sounds for you fine folks. Keeling's crushing it. He's a behind the scenes, like a big, big helper for CPSC for sure. Affiliate. Yes. Big ups to Keeling. Really appreciate all of his help.

I don't know if I mentioned it or if anyone is saying anything, but his podcast on the holiday episode made me laugh so fucking hard when I heard it. Did you hear his other bits that he did? If you didn't get it, I'll share it with you. He did multiple takes for everything that he did. Oh, excellent. Yeah, they're all awesome. Yeah, it was incredible. Keelan's a master at that stuff. He's due for a bit episode.
01:09:31
Speaker
oh hey okay hey good idea yeah yeah Big thanks to Cool Chris of Scott Punk International. He was on it four or five times this year. He graciously lets us come to the SPI Fest and do a bunch of stuff there. Awesome dude, big supporter. Obviously we put a lot of his bands on the podcast. We love talking to them.
01:09:54
Speaker
Everything that they do over there is amazing. Further to that, big thanks to Michie, who was on multiple times this year as well with the Get in Witchy with Michies. And another one coming up was on a live show with us, does a lot of extra stuff for us lately too. to help with guest booking and some other things. I'll say thank you to Mazz, who was on the PowerPod. Oh, yeah. I don't want to do more PowerPods. That's a hard one to do because it's a lot of writing. Right. But I would like to get that back up and running next year. And I feel like I have the more capacity to do that. Yeah, that's a very scripted pod. Yeah, there's a ton of writing. I like being the engineer. I forgot you engineered. That's funny. Yeah, that was sick.
01:10:36
Speaker
um Big thanks to the Checkerheads, big thanks to the patrons. Anybody who gives us $5 a month is doing more than is asked of them. That's ah above and beyond the call of duty. You help keep the lights on. i We've mentioned it multiple years. $5 Canadian or $5 US? I don't remember. I've never asked. It doesn't really matter. Because you asked for killing it. um All that money goes right back into the podcast. like this money doesn't ever yeah hosting For hosting websites, all the audio engineering, all that stuff. um anything If there is anything left over, it literally helps us go to SPI Fest and then do stuff there. so
01:11:12
Speaker
So um it all just goes back into the pod it's it's much appreciated and all your feedback and and engagement is it means the world to us and even why we keep doing it and even if you're not a patron like any any anyone who shares or like Reposts our stuff or gets episodes a little extra reach. Thank you so much. Yeah, absolutely like I think that thats type people yeah Yeah, we have a definitely a handful of people out there who are not patrons, but like strong supporters. What are you doing, Rob? I am going to say thank you to our past guests. Oh, so these are all the people that have guested on in two and twenty four. ah Thanks to Adam, the sky mailman to ah Stuck Lucky. ah Big thanks to Maxie Taxi, who helped at the festival. Yeah. hell special yeah hell yeah ah so Hell yeah. Sonic Boom 6, Ike, always the best, Aaron Karnes for coming on. The Power Up folks for bringing literally the whole band every time they're on. So fun. Jordan Morris, ah who's done the show twice, like that's a huge thing for us. Check out his graphic novel.
01:12:16
Speaker
Oh, it's so good. So it's really good. Bad Mary, who was like a breakout star this year, I feel like we played as our first FEMBO you online show with them. Yeah, they're great. ah Devin Kay, obviously, joystick when they did their show at ah they or they did their episode from an airport, which is So crazy. Obviously H-town. Runaway Ricochet. Everybody that was on an SPI Fest. There's a lot. There's a lot. Kamoy and Javi.
01:12:49
Speaker

01:14:03
Speaker
And oh, we gotta leave you. Yeah, this is very important. Leave you as always with a super cut. I love this cover. It's so good. It's just really good. That's a crazy track one. I mean, that's already a track one on the record. But like a track one on a compilation, like that's bananas. Real stoner-y and like lots of like jams and funky. Lots of slap bass is bananas. I recommend it, listening. Seeing them do this live was,
01:14:34
Speaker
I'm gonna take it from you, there was bananas.

Banana Themes and Music Critiques

01:14:36
Speaker
Yeah, one of the things that I found, just like, this is the first time I listened to this band, was like three songs in, I was like, this would have been a fucking bananas show. Right? And it makes sense for the song, like it just, it like it there are like these kind of edgelord lines throughout this entire album that just don't even need to be there.
01:14:59
Speaker
He is 20 at this time too, which is bananas. oh Again, too much too much money, too much time at too young an age. You know what I mean? It's best of. and And it was released on Kung Fu. What the heck was Joe Islante doing with this? Making making them euros. We've said it on the on the podcast before, but Kung Fu Records is bananas.
01:15:27
Speaker
i find my felt ons oh my god how could you not need to go that hard on tarzan for us also yes also geneness also fuck je rules stranis genesis is not is wild and also like i've read his i read not dead yet and if you haven't read that please read it that' all i have this life crazy it's it's his life is bananas What do you put in your smoothies every morning? um Well, I am a little spinach bitch, and a banana, pro tip, bananas make every smoothie taste good. Okay, banana, chocolate oat milk, and some like legit peanut butter, a little bit of spinach. You're laughing and that tastes like a delicious treat. I felt like all American rejects were like the American version of that. You know? like i Like a second banana band that did well.
01:16:21

hanging just below the top. They wore a shitload of plaid. There's plaid on plaid on plaid. And all the logos on all the CDs were all plaid. Everything was plaid. Yeah. And that cover, the cover of more noise than other disturbances is like, to quote that the kids, cringe as fuck. It is real creepy looking because they're all like in like dad plaid. It's bananas. like The show where Del Monte Monte Boston and ah Chiquita Mitipo is my favorite Sublime song. Any footage you see of a banana man, unless you see my watermark on it, it's for posers only. Like any banana man, like sunglasses, like little feet. We like a Cavendish. Everyone wants to be the Cavendish banana. The that's how I pronounce it as well. Yeah. yeah
01:17:15
Speaker
It puts the dish in, in, in, in Cavendish. Yeah. Yeah. So who are some of your billionaire clients? That's what we want names. We're sneaky hints. Sneaky hints. You don't have to name names. Like just give us a tip. I think I can obfuscate enough. Banana Gates. Elon Bunch. One more. Jeffery Bananas.
