Introduction to 'Everyday Mindful'

00:00:10
Speaker
Hi, I'm Kylie Wyn Efron. And I'm Nan Cavanaugh, and welcome to Everyday Mindful, a space for real talk on weaving the magic of mindfulness into our daily lives. Let's dig in.
00:00:29
Speaker
Hey, Kylie. Hey, Nan. How you doing? I'm doing well. How are you doing?

Exploring Abundance Mindset

00:00:35
Speaker
I'm doing good. I am excited to get right to it to kind of continue the conversation we started last week about abundance and allowing more abundance flow into our lives and how we kind of tap in to that abundance mindset, how we meet that frequency too. really achieve what We desire and so I think today we're gonna talk a little bit about you know Some more of those the really like the practical the practical steps that we can take um Getting out of the theory and getting into a little bit of the doing I like that Well Let's start I think that
00:01:24
Speaker
The number one way to start moving yourself into more of a state of um but an abundance mindset is beginning to notice and becoming aware of your beliefs around abundance and lack in all areas of your life, really scarcity in all areas of your life. The more you can begin to start to understand what kind of beliefs you're holding, the faster you're able to process, to kind of transmute those negative belief systems that we we have in place. Do you have any thoughts on the best way to do that?

Nan's Abundance Journal Journey

00:02:07
Speaker
Yeah, actually, it's funny you mentioned this. i Back in May, um I decided to keep but start an abundance journal.
00:02:16
Speaker
where a like I journal. I've been journaling since I was 10. And I had completed a journal actually was a journal you gave me for my 40th birthday. Oh, I remember that line and the pen too. Yeah, and the pen and took me about three years to fill that journal. um But I did and I love it that you used it for that. Yeah. Well, I completed that journal. So that journal is a documentation of the past three years of my life. And I was like, Oh, I should go get a new journal. And then, um, I had this little journal that I had gotten through an organization called women writing for a change that I used to do. Um, I used to be the editor of their, their beautiful journal, um, and of women's writing. And, um, I,
00:03:07
Speaker
decided that I really wanted to keep, ah it's a small journal. So usually when I journal, it's like a big, usually big journal. I'm going to have it for a year, a couple of years. This is a small journal. I knew it was going to be a small window of time that was going to take me to fill it. And so I was like, I felt like I needed to have a theme and I liked that a lot. Yeah, yeah. um And so I chose the theme of abundance. And it's funny, I opened it up and the very first page was actually from 2019, right before the pandemic. um And I was like, oh shit, so much has changed. So much has happened and within this space of abundance since the pandemic, ah financially, professionally,
00:03:50
Speaker
emotionally, the whole nine yards. And I was like, okay, I'm gonna say that again. Right? So I was like, okay, well. I feel like sometimes I think like the year 2019 is just like. It's like because a million years ago. like Exactly. It's like another lifetime. yeah Right? And I was like, can I really? I didn't know anything. Yeah. Right? I'm like, well, okay, that's the opening page of this journal. And I'm just gonna jump. jumped to 2024 as the next entry. Um, make for an interesting read later down

Addressing Scarcity in Journals

00:04:23
Speaker
the road. Um,
00:04:25
Speaker
right right um so I just started, you know, really thinking about, you know, drawing about the word abundance, what it means to me, where I have abundance in my life, what abundance I would like to see grow. But with the one thing I have haven't done yet, which, you know, your question really just stirred up in me is is really digging into scarcity and identifying where there is, you know, as someone that really believes in manifestation, I often really just focus on putting the energy into
00:05:04
Speaker
the thing I want to manifest and putting that out into the world, which is a big part of generating abundance for sure. But when it comes to scarcity, it's you know kind of a scary place. Hashtag scare scary when you start really getting into it um and the things that come up. you know We talked about how a lot of shit can come up when you start digging into your feelings of scarcity and the work you have to do to be able to let go of that to move that energy forward. So I think my journal is going to take a dark turn starting tomorrow. You know what? I know I'm so glad you brought that up because the truth is is that we're equal parts light and dark. You have to be able to sit in the shadows a little bit. shadows are cool and Shadow work is important.
00:05:54
Speaker
It's yeah really important and it's particularly important if you want to grow because one of the things we touched on in our last episode is that we're working with like the law of averages. right is that It's not that you're supposed to be keeping yourself in this constant state of positivity and high vibrational thought process. thought process You can't be there all the time. You have to be able to let yourself dip down because when you dip down into the shadows, into the darker stuff, that is where you actually get the wealth of information, the kernels,
00:06:28
Speaker
Like that's actually what propels you back up,

Shadow Work for Growth

00:06:31
Speaker
right? That's what lets you reach that next level of healing. That's the seeds. The seeds are where the germination goes down in the darkness. The seeds are in the dirt. They're in the dark, right? They are in the dirt. They're literally in the dirt. And sometimes you got to get down in there and pull them out and look at them and understand them. so that you can get back up into the light. But ideally, the next time you're going back up into the light, you're doing it from a more informed prey place, right? You have more wisdom. You've extrapolated. I don't even know if that's a word. I keep saying it, extrapolate, extrapolate. But it's not say it's not an easy one to say, and I'm really into it right now. but you're really it It allows you to transmute some of the pain, some of the darkness, so that you can actually start making some changes. Because if you don't examine that stuff, you won't make any changes. You'll just keep trying to stay in a more abundant place. and but You can focus on manifestation all you want, but if you don't actually change anything, you're not actually going to get anything either.
00:07:33
Speaker
So I think that it's the number two thing that I think you need to be able to do is develop the ability to sit with the lower vibrational thoughts and feelings. And once again, it doesn't mean you're sitting with them for a year. It doesn't even mean you're sitting with them for a week. but maybe you allow yourself to sit with them for moments and reflect on them a little bit, get curious about them a little bit, start to look at them. Like I think it's really interesting that you have a gratitude journal, like a man, excuse me, like an abundance journal, and some pages are not going to be filled with just, this are the things I want, this is the abundance I want, not just the lists, but it's gonna have some like,
00:08:14
Speaker
reflection, it's going to have some darker, you're going to have to face some of your darker thought processes, processes or however you want to say it, you know? Yeah. And I think to me that like, that's where the work is, that that's where the grit is. And that's what actually gets you to the next place and allows you to actually make some changes. Because and and it gets back to that number three is like working with the law of averages, like, allow yourself to go down into that harder part, that darker part, examining your belief systems, um examining maybe some of the patterns of thoughts that you have, maybe like limiting beliefs that we have about ourselves, yeah then starting to shift back up. And I think part of the way you know we do that is embracing change and like learning the lessons without carrying the vibration of guilt and shame.

Processing Guilt and Shame

00:09:13
Speaker
And guilt and shame is something I've been thinking about a lot because I just came out of this chapter where been really I've been in that shape that shadowy phase where I'm really like reflecting a lot on you know my own choices, my own belief systems about abundance, about how to move forward. And um I'm trying to do that without also carrying guilt and shame, without being punishing to myself. Like, well, you should have handled this this way. And if you had been smarter, you would have done that. You know, that's a really hard thing to not do when we're reflecting on things and when we're taking learning a lesson of some kind.
00:09:52
Speaker
or just even, you know, digging into the deeper rec stuff. It's really hard to not take shame and guilt with you because man, you want to talk about like the lowest vibrational thoughts you can possibly have. You want to talk about something that really holds you back and prevents um prevent vi abundance. It's guilt and shame. So true. You know, it's that you can be honest with yourself. You can be reflective without guilting yourself or feeling shameful of the fact that you had those that we did the things you did or had the thoughts you had or whatever it is that you're sorting through. And I think that there's a big difference between like reflection and guilt and shame. And that's to me one of the hardest things.
00:10:45
Speaker
Yeah, I feel like guilt and shame are two emotions that really don't get you anywhere in life ever. like Um, they just, but they strike down they just you down and they don't serve anyone, you know, like when someone comes to me and apologizes from a space of guilt, I'm like, that doesn't fucking change that you fucking shat on me, dude. Like, I don't, you're, you know, I appreciate the gesture here, but you know, I need you to really, you know, action speak a lot on the words and I need you to
00:11:21
Speaker
um you know um forgiveness is an act of you know letting go for the self the person who's been wronged and um I'm I'm a full believer in the power of forgiveness and I think you have to forgive yourself like we all make mistakes. Yeah all suffer due to our life experience and make challenging decisions that affect us down the road and affect the people we love and um All you can do is, you know, go to that dark place, plant those seeds of self-awareness in that dark space, let them germinate a little while, and eventually, you know, just you'll bloom. You know, you'll come out of it. You will find freedom from it.
00:12:15
Speaker
um yeah But you have to go to the dark place. There's nothing wrong with darkness. Darkness is beautiful. Darkness is soft and cool and peaceful. Well, you know, I think you're so right about the forgiveness aspect because if you can't forgive yourself, then you don't think you're worthy. Like if I can forgive myself for something I've done, then there's no way I'm going to actually believe that I'm worthy of something, yeah right? So that is a limiting belief that I'm going to hold on to. I'm going to think I need to be punished. If I feel like I've done something, if I'm not forgiving myself, that I think I need to be punished, not rewarded, right? so i So forgiveness, I hadn't even thought about that component of it. And I think you're right. I think that is so, so key. And sometimes we often think about forgiveness in relationship to forgiving somebody else, but it's about how do we forgive ourselves sometimes in those moments for
00:13:06
Speaker
making those mistakes, so key. And I also believe one of the biggest and easiest ways to kind of really shift your frequency very quickly is practicing gratitude.

Using Gratitude to Alleviate Anxiety

00:13:18
Speaker
We touched on that before as well too, is that um i I started doing this, I remember years ago when the book The Secret came out, do you remember that? Like a long time ago. And um I remember i was I read the book. I watched the little movie. I thought it was pretty interesting. And so I just started practicing it. I just started practicing like every single day, like visualizing what I wanted, but also literally just list. I would go into meditation. I would just start listing the things I was grateful from.
00:13:47
Speaker
And at the time I was having a lot of anxiety in my life. And it was amazing, like instantaneously if I was feeling anxious and I just started a list. I am grateful for my, you know, at the time he was my boyfriend. um I am grateful that I have a roof on my head. I am grateful for my mother and the love she gave me. I am grateful for the wonderful friends. And then it was insane within like two minutes, all of the the anxiety would just cease. My whole body would shift. And the actual frequency of gratitude is very, very high. And you can truly practice it and you can practice it to the place where it just, it will shift you instantaneously. So besides just in the moments, let's say you have a daily gratitude practice where you wake up in the morning and you list the things you're gratitude grateful for.
00:14:35
Speaker
and You go to bed, you list the things you're grateful for. I think that's important. That's like sharpening your tools. That's like having a meditation practice, right? But then it's also extremely useful in the hot moments, in the moments where you're about to have a full-blown anxiety attack or you're really struggling. it can It can shift you very quickly out of that state to a calmer state, to a state where you can then maybe be a little more reflective. um And I just think it's a really powerful vibration to align yourself with and to practice. And I think it can be used in, like I said, as a practicing mindfulness practice that you do on a daily basis. And it can also be used in the the hard moments, in the moments where you need to be rescued a little bit.
00:15:25
Speaker
where you need to kind of like really shift gears mentally. I think it makes it a huge, huge difference. And I also think too, sometimes we really underestimate simplicity. We think that like, you think like you need to have some crazy meditation practice or you need to have like, you need to go super deep in something and deep therapy, but some and look on a great and deep meditation practice and a deep therapy practice are wonderful things to have. But sometimes we disregard the simple things, how just simple daily practices have huge, huge impacts on our life. And I think that practicing gratitude is is one of the key ones. I agree. And I think not just practicing gratitude for yourself, but also for others. Like, I'm a big believer in karma. And I think when you practiced
00:16:23
Speaker
you know, abundance, you know, gratitude and recognizing abundance and, you know, sending energy to manifest abundance in other people's lives. I believe the universe responds, you know, I believe, I believe it it really, it really does. And it's so easy. um It's so easy to really focus on your own needs and wants in this world. um But when you open up that space to those and not trying to like, you know, fix other people and do to the, you know, support other other people to the point to your, you know,
00:17:03
Speaker
lacking in your own well-being, but just really celebrate other people's abundance and well-being versus feeling jealous or envious. or you know it I think it makes a big difference in that energy that you are putting out to the universe and and it'll you know it'll that whole magnetism thing. You know, well, we do emit an energy field. This is scientific. We emit an energy field around ourselves and our thoughts actually are a part of that energy field and different thoughts have measurable frequencies that you can look at. And because we all have our own or as our own energy fields that are surrounding us, they come in contact with one another.
00:17:49
Speaker
That's why you can, um if you can collectively raise the vibrations of groups and a collective thought process increase, you can make impacts, impact on the world around you as well, not just yourself. So the what we you know the way you think literally shapes the world around you. yeah It literally changes the structure of the world around you. And i that's why it's it's so important to practice

Staying Present to Attract Abundance

00:18:16
Speaker
that. And I think it's also the focusing on the present moment, basically a mindfulness practice. um Because if you want to attract more abundance in your life, you need to raise your frequency.
00:18:30
Speaker
And if you are in a deeply worried state, an anxious state, if you are spending so much time focusing on what's to come, you cannot raise your frequency in the present moment. The present is the only thing that matters in that moment. And so if you can practice and use your mindfulness skills to learn how to be more present. That is one of, in my opinion, is one of the key steps towards developing a more abundant mindset, right? Because we kind of think of abundance once abundance is a mind flow. It's something that's coming to us, but you have to be present. You have to be in this moment to get there.
00:19:14
Speaker
Yeah, you we do, right? Because the present moment is the only thing that actually exists, right? The past has already happened. There's nothing you can do to change what's already happened. The future is non-existent. So really, the only space that you have to make change is now. And yeah, you can you need you know obviously learn from your past in some capacity, but you can't cling to it. you know You really have to stay focused on where you are at this moment and and let go of the things that are trying to drag you back. We all have got things that are trying to
00:19:54
Speaker
oh chain us to our past in some capacity. And if you really want to embrace that abundance mindset, you've got to, you've got to unchain yourself from a lot. Well, because in the present moment is an opportunity for complete rebirth because no other moment matters. It doesn't actually matter what you did. You know what I mean? Like right now is the only moment that matters. This is a new opportunity to act differently, to move. It is a fresh start. Every minute is a fresh start. yeah which is the other reason why you have to forgive yourself for other stuff is because every moment is a is a fresh start. And I think you also have to really believe in yourself and then take action. So, you know, forgive yourself like we discussed. Be able to reflect on what your belief systems are that are potentially holding you back.
00:20:45
Speaker
right Forgive yourself for feeling that way, thinking that way, acting that way, and change your actual beliefs. Because if you change your beliefs and you you actually start to believe, I'm fully capable of making the money I want to make, I'm fully capable of living a life that is rich in love. I am fully capable of manifesting whatever it is that you want, whatever level of you know abundance, of overflow, that you have, then you can start to, with confidence, start to take small actions that start moving you in the direction that you want to go as well. So it's really like tapping in, rather than tapping into the negative beliefs, tapping into belief in yourself and then starting step by step, day by day, to take one small step towards something that you want, something that's gonna bring you
00:21:38
Speaker
more abundance in some form in some form it doesn't even have to be the form You're visualizing you know Yeah, I do and I know for me um and I don't know what your experience has been but
00:21:56
Speaker
There's a lot of letting go of fear in the process of manifesting abundance. you know And I think fear and scarcity are obviously intrinsically tied. But there's a real, like I will look at an opportunity that's so obvious that would support something that I need to do in order to move forward, let's say financially. And I will look at this opportunity for months before finally pulling the trigger on it. And then I'll pull the trigger and be like, why did I do this six months ago? exactly Like, why did they have to sit with this for so long? Like, yeah because I was scared. Like, oh, you know, I don't know. Maybe it's, you know, I just, there's unknown factors and it was a big decision. And um sometimes we sit a long time with big decisions when we really don't have to.
00:22:51
Speaker
You know, like we know the truth. We know the outcome. We know it's what we have to do. um But there is that like and analysis paralysis space you get into. Yeah, absolutely. And you know, I do think sometimes I find that if I can't move on something, sometimes that's because I'm not supposed to quite yet. I do think you can have moments where you need to kind of sit. But I would say more times than not, it's because I'm but there's a part of me that's a little afraid, you know, There's that part of you that's holding you back from really believing that you're capable and just ripping the band-aid off and moving forward and taking one small step towards the abundance that you desire. And I also think it's about being open to various outcomes and abundance flowing in all areas of your life.
00:23:41
Speaker
So being open to change, being open to maybe the final outcome of what you wanted to manifest looking a little bit different, maybe it's even better than what you thought. Maybe it presents a hard lesson along the road to get there, but then that takes you to even better place, you know, that allows you to rise even higher, even though it came with some hardship. um And it's just like allowing to see if you can get it to a place where it flows freely in one area and then allow it to pour over into all the other areas of your life. So if you are struggling financially, maybe instead of trying to exert so much energy on the money aspect, of course, tend to your money matters, but really trying to focus the rest of your energy around an area of your life
00:24:34
Speaker
that is really abundant and it is really rich and really looking at what's working there and why is that working there and allowing so that you're shifting your vibration and shifting your awareness to a state of overflow as opposed to a state of lack and scarcity. Yeah, and like I like that. i like It's just an indirectness about it that feels a lot more feminine than that very linear masculine approach. And I think there's something more organic about acknowledging abundance in all aspects of your life, even when you're feeling maybe scarcity in one and allowing that
00:25:23
Speaker
that the energy of abundance and joy um and really nourishing and nurturing that to to feed that space where you're feeling you're feeling the lack. I think that's something that I know I'm as a, I don't know, I'm like a doer. You know what I mean? Like I, when I see something and I want something, I go for it. I'm a fixer, you know? And I think sometimes, but it's exhausting. It's exhausting to be in that space all the time. Yeah. And, um, I like this idea of, I don't want to, I don't want to call it a more passive approach, but maybe a more
00:26:06
Speaker
We want to say relaxed approach to two generating abundance, to not see it as some linear path, and some goal you have to tackle. Yeah, I think it's a state. It's a state that we want to get ourselves into. that's a little bit And it's about free flow and it's about overflow, right? And so if you're not tapping into where you want to be in one area, tap into someplace else because I guarantee it's flowing elsewhere and figure out why it's successful there or just focus your energy on that. And I think be open to the flow and don't be afraid.
00:26:42
Speaker
of the darker thoughts and the thoughts because also too I think it's okay to acknowledge scarcity. I think a lot of times people when they talk about scarcity they're like scarcity isn't a thing especially here this is a spiritual community like it's not a thing don't focus your energy well it is a thing actually it may not be a thing that you want to spend a lot of time sitting in but it does exist and It exists in the in the sense and in the essence that it simply wants to be acknowledged and there is there's lessons there There's something that you need to sort through so that you can move beyond it. It is a limiting belief That scarcity is a limiting belief, but you sometimes have to examine the emotions around it It's a gift if you can allow yourself

Learning from Scarcity

00:27:24
Speaker
the time to sit with it and and to examine it and then you can put it aside and focus your energy on the more abundance and the more overflow. But to like say it doesn't exist or it's not a thing, don't worry about it. I feel like kind of, once again, it kind of bypasses some of the work that needs to be done. You can't bypass your spiritual work or even if you don't care about spirituality, your emotional work that you need to do to grow.
00:27:49
Speaker
Yeah, I agree and and thinking okay, so I've been thinking a lot about just like the abundance of the planet lately and how like I've been going outside in the mornings and listening to the birds and really sitting with the just the fact that we live as this credible creation planet and and what it would be like if we lived in the planet that wasn't such a miracle, you know of creation and abundance and you know, I think It's easy in our fast-paced human lives to just completely disassociate from the fact that we are a part of this, I don't even know what to describe it. Beautiful ecosystem that you're one part of. Yeah, like this wild state of abundance all around us all the time that's all operating in its own
00:28:43
Speaker
multitude of systems and that we are deeply connected to. Right. I know. And I think and that's something that I've been really trying to work into my my mindfulness practice is is really connecting with the just the incredible biodiversity of our planet. And I don't live in the woods. I don't i mean, I'm not living on some mountain top jungle somewhere with some great vista. Like I'm in- In your backyard, in your garden. Yeah. I'm in a little neighborhood, man, but it's there. It's everywhere. In a public park and look at a tree and listen to bird sings. I feel the same way because I think there is an abundance of miracles. I think miracles are the natural state. There is an abundance of miracles available to us.
00:29:35
Speaker
It's just, it's been bred into us that that's not the case. And so like one of the most beautiful miracles out there is just this earth, what, you know, this planet, what nature creates, it's so abundant abundant. So even when it's struggling, even when it's struggling, even when it's struggling, and quite frankly, everything has to struggle to grow. So, you know if you can even if the current Circumstances in your life are struck if you're struggling, maybe you're struggling financially Maybe you're struggling within your health Even if you can take moments and just go outside and connect during kovat That is what I did often because you know, you're youre a restaurant owner, too We went through hell and back we went overnight and overnight from getting ready to open up a second restaurant, being in this incredibly abundant state financially, to feeling like we were going to lose everything, everything, our business. our home like we were I was like, what?

Spiritual Growth Through Nature

00:30:32
Speaker
ah it was And it was so overnight and all consuming, the stress was insane. yeah And I would sit in a day and I would be like applying for loans. And this was before they got the PPP in place. and you I mean, it was just a grind. It was 12 hours a day on a computer trying to save ourselves.
00:30:49
Speaker
And I would have to take these breaks and I would just go outside and just look up. I would like look up at the sun. I would look up at the trees. I started to like, that became, and that actually is, there's a formal yogic meditation practice that's actually just becoming aware of the sounds and the sights around you. It's actually not closing your eyes and going inward. It's literally paying attention to what sounds my hearing. Oh, I hear that sound over here. I hear that bird over here. And then what sensations are you feeling? Oh, I feel the sun on my skin. um It's just becoming aware of everything that is around you. And ah it would really connect me. I actually started to develop this deep connection with birds at that time. There was an eagle that would fly over my house multiple times. An eagle is a symbolism for leadership and to stay the course during difficult times. Like I allowed nature to start become like a messenger for me in that time.
00:31:43
Speaker
and I really started to connect to where I was living and to what was around me and out of that chapter became the most spiritually and personally transformative chapters of my life and I wouldn't take any I wouldn't give up any of it because it I got so much out of it, but it really was nature at that time that survived me and then the breath that's when I started diving deep and into breath work and cold therapy, these things that just allowed me to re, like I could go in, I could go externally into nature and internally with my breath and regulate my nervous system and build abundance in my life. So in a time where I had the least amount of abundance I've ever had, I was able to build more abundance financially, personally, spiritually and emotionally out of that chapter. Yeah.
00:32:38
Speaker
Yeah, I think it's just really important to recognize that we live in, we live on the planet. We are a part, we don't live on, we are a part of a massive ecosystem of abundance. And when you just take the time to connect with that, it definitely shifts your your understanding of of of your wants, of your needs, and of how to, like you said earlier, how to believe in yourself and and take action. yeah Because you're not alone, you're a part of something really magnificent and very bountiful.
00:33:19
Speaker
Write that in your abundance journal. After my dark night of the scarcity soul. You can alternate. You can alternate. Well, I love that now. And I think that's such a beautiful, beautiful reflective thought and feels like a good spot to to end. Yeah. Get outside more guys. Manifest that abundance. All right, girl. I am wishing you an abundant week ahead filled with gratitude. I am wishing you the same. I am wishing you all the light. Thank you. Bye. Bye.
