Introduction & Sponsorship

00:00:18
Speaker
G'day and welcome to the Pod Pod brought to you by Moreira's Magic. I'm your host Holmesy, three-time top 10 finisher and twice runner-up in AFL Fantasy Classic. The buy rounds are been and gone. We're back to best 22 football and we We saw some teams go absolutely nuclear this week and then some other teams who may have been found out across the buy rounds struggle to put up some scores.

Team Performance Post-Buy Rounds

00:00:42
Speaker
But we're here to review it all. Unfortunately, with no Louie or Geordie this week, but we do have a special guest on the pod, which we will get to in a minute. But as always, we do have our staple two-time top 10 finisher andw and runner-up in 2019, John Harmy with us, mate.
00:00:59
Speaker
How are you? Hello, host Hamesy. Yep, no, I'm going pretty well, thanks, mate. And yeah, just been getting into the footy. Obviously, yeah not Essendon, the Tassie Devils footy because that's the team I'm getting right behind these days.
00:01:15
Speaker
Can we just, um I know we're an AFL fantasy podcast, but can we just quickly touch on this, Harmy? How has your mob, Essendon, got to the rubble stage that that they're in. They're just unwatchable at the moment.
00:01:27
Speaker
It's pretty heartbreaking as a fan. um Anyway, every week I turn up expecting us to turn it around. This is the week. I've tipped them every week in the footy tipping. um So that probably just shows ah the level of faith that I have in Essendon. But, yeah, i don't know. 2027 must
00:01:51
Speaker
At least you've got some good draft picks that ah that have showed a bit this year. But yeah, far out. Needs a bit of a clean out at the end of this year and and to start again under the mighty James Hurd, Harmy.

Return of Sam & Predictions

00:02:02
Speaker
Oh, yeah. The golden boy. He'll he'll bring it back. Yep. 2000 all over again good memories whatever it takes mate whatever it takes and as mentioned off the top we do have a special guest with us this week you haven't heard him for a while but he did say that when he gave the pod up if he was ever top of the pod then he would jump back on and that just shows the how long it's been since he's been on but Sam you've decided to grace us with your presence this week that's right boys I am back and I could not be happier to be here i um I haven't listened to a single podcast from any content producer all year. So everyone who is listening to this pod can take anything that I say with a grain of salt. You might recall pre-season, I thought Max Holmes was going to make an excellent D1. And lo and behold, look what's happened. He is almost our D1. So um maybe there is some some wisdom if enough time passes.
00:03:02
Speaker
Yep, all it took was for the six defenders above him to fall off a cliff and get injured, Sam. And we're in it. What did you say pre-pod, Harmy, that, you know, the reason that Sam's out where he's at at the moment is just because he's not listening to the boys on the pod pod?
00:03:17
Speaker
Oh, well, he hasn't been listening to the number one coach on the pod, um co co-host of some of the Marrera's Magic gear, Cole Holmes.

Scores & Rankings Discussion

00:03:27
Speaker
Obviously, you'd be up the top with you, mate.
00:03:30
Speaker
Yeah, we're on the slide this week, Harmi, but we will get to that. Let's get stuck into our rounds, Harmi. And unfortunately, mate, you need to kick us off again. Yes, um'm putting up a score of 2-2-2-1, which for me actually means I went down 1,500 ranks 16,600. Unbelievable. I actually, you know, you'd think anything over 2-2 is a pretty decent score, but didn't have Naz or Shizu as my captain and a few other premiums letting me down there. So not ideal, but yeah I look at my team and it looks okay. So anyway...
00:04:08
Speaker
um My Dossie Pick of the Week, what have I got here? oh look Let's just give it to Sam Walsh. I mean, 69 out of a premium, somebody that you think is going to average over 100, not even in a difficult match-up. So... Oof, yep, Sam Walsh, he can have it Lots of people have jumped off and here's the premiums that

Player Performance Analysis

00:04:32
Speaker
I'm stuck with. But my boy, Colby McEacher, he's back, 101, chipping around the back line, as he should be. So he can have my Stato pick of the week.
00:04:45
Speaker
He is the definition of your boy, Harmy, considering you picked him in, what, round three last year when he was a forward pocket, not scoring. It's been a while, a long time coming. Yeah, he was due. Yeah.
00:04:59
Speaker
Nah, fair enough. He's he's definitely cheap for for coaches that might need ah a bit of a stopgap. But um yeah, I think he's he's still playing a bit more wing rather than the the backline role that we wanted him for. But hey, first ton in a while. That's good to see for you, Harmi. I am next with the 22-55-0.
00:05:18
Speaker
which actually saw me slide about 400 ranks down to 1,532, but not ideal, had some injuries that I needed to cover, which unfortunately meant ah Yeah, bit of a slide this week. My Stato pick of the week, Messiah Wanganeen Miller. I had to munt my team to get him in, but the 160 on, or not even debut, I had him earlier on in the year, but after trading him back in with the captaincy as well. So had the VC on Dawson, 126, but decided to to take that on for the 160. So that was... ah
00:05:53
Speaker
Yeah, very, very needed. And, Harmi, it's on the run sheet here, but I'll just talk to you about this quickly. So my dossie pick the week, I'm going to give it to a combination of. So Durham, Houston, Walsh and Dugowie, how many points do you think they scored together in the second half?
00:06:12
Speaker
yeah, not enough. We've seen a lot of second-half fadeouts, haven't we? Yeah. 68 points between four players in the second half so Dugowie was nowhere anyway but Durham Walsh and Houston were all above 50 at halftime and I think yep that they're going well and yeah all of them struggled to crack 70 which is just yeah unacceptable at this time of year but I ideally wanted Houston and that and even Walsh probably gone a while ago, but with these four sideways trades, I haven't been able to get them. And we'll talk a bit about my team later on, but they're going to have to hang around a while longer yet. Sam, how'd you go this week?

Humorous Reflections on Rankings

00:06:55
Speaker
who Well, well, well, top of the pod. No surprises there. I came in with a score of 2277 and that brought my rank to 191. So I'm looking good. Oh, sorry. Hang on. That's 20,191. So I'm right out there in the dossier ranks, but it's important to have balance on the pod. That's key.
00:07:20
Speaker
um Stato pick of the week, I'd like to give it to my man, Bailey Dale, um who's actually been one of my better picks. He's put up some nice scores over the last 10 weeks or so that I've had him.
00:07:34
Speaker
And boy, if you think you've got problems mentioning Dagoe, Walsh, those sorts of things, try having Sam Banks at MA. Holy moly. Boy, did he fool me. couple of good scores going into a juicy Collingwood matchup the week before, and he gives me 48 and 56 this week. So he has been an absolute stinker, and I'll be happy to see the back of him this week.
00:07:58
Speaker
Yeah. Sam, when you said rank 191, for a second there, I thought that you were just looking at the run sheet from this time last year and just reliving your glory days. Yeah, yeah. I mean, what could have been last year? But yeah, more more befitting my usual standards this year, I'd say.
00:08:15
Speaker
Now youre you're starting to see what it's like to play AFL Fantasy with a bit of a handicap now that you've had the the young kid and you know dad life's taken over. You got a bit more... ah respect for the for the family men that have to to put it up each week?
00:08:29
Speaker
That's right, Holmesy, I definitely do. It's a bit hard to watch footy with a um you know little 11th month old running around on the carpet, ah eating everything and pushing things over. um The truth is not all of us can draft from the hospital while their wife is in labour. Some of us have very, very special, special partners.
00:08:49
Speaker
That is, ah yeah, that's a story for another time. ah I mean, the the trick is you just have to constantly risk divorce and being a deadbeat dad, Sam.
00:09:01
Speaker
Let's get on. Let's get on with it. ah Pod Pod Challenge update. So 15 coaches inside the top 100 now up from 11 last week. So that's showing, I think I spoke about it on the pod last week, but this first round after the buys is the week where you can really see that big rank shift if you've done everything right.

Pod Challenge & Fantasy Prizes

00:09:19
Speaker
And we've seen some massive swings in the ranks. And I think we have a new coach that's at number one too. So the...
00:09:26
Speaker
The race for the Tundra is definitely heating up. As always, the special shout-out goes to the Powerhouse, who's still sitting at number eight. Steve-O's Devoz sitting at number 11 now, and then Megatron ranked at 22. So really good, as always, to see those guys up right at the pointy end of the rankings. The winner of the Pod Pod Challenge will receive a custom AFL Fantasy ring from our friends over at supercoachchampion.com.
00:09:54
Speaker
Harmi, Sam, let's get stuck into our hot topics for the week. And we don't have many, but unfortunately, we do have another forced trade to a defender premium. I'm not sure what is going on in the defensive line, but I think that's probably, what, four top six guys that we've lost in the last four weeks, which is, yeah, crazy when

Whitfield's Concussion & Trade Strategies

00:10:15
Speaker
you think about it. Harmi, Sam, are you both Whitfield owners?
00:10:19
Speaker
Yes, I am. Sam? Yeah, I've got him as as well. I'll be holding at this stage. or interesting. All right, talk me through the holding strategy.
00:10:31
Speaker
Yep, very happy to. The truth is I've got ah kind of one really poor performer left on field, which is Sam Banks, as I mentioned before. And I don't have Bailey Smith, so I've got to grab him.
00:10:45
Speaker
And this is the week I figure to do it. Hall Cahan has been putting up some pretty respectable scores from the bench. So I'm happy to give him a run. um He actually came on field for me last week after Whitfield was ruled out due to the TOG threshold.
00:11:01
Speaker
So I figure that's a bigger priority. And if I don't make the trade this week, then I'll just be rolling with Sandbanks again and there might be another injury next week. so Also, I'm 20K, so I don't really care at this point. um That's my take.
00:11:16
Speaker
You can say you don't care all you like, Sam, but you're currently on a fantasy footy podcast. So I think you do care a little bit. But yeah, I mean, that's ah it's an interesting point and it's it's something I've considered as well, considering how many times we've had to go sideways on these premiums over the last sort of five and six weeks. And if we just keep doing it at some stage, we're going to get to a point where it all kind of comes apart and breaks. And sometimes you need that sort of circuit breaker, to fix some other players in your side, which is something I'm sort of considering this week as well. Sam Harmy, what are your initial thoughts with Whitfield?
00:11:51
Speaker
Yeah, look, pretty positive news from the coach of the Mountain Goats, Drew Jones, earlier, sort of saying that, you know, as far as concussions go, could be on the lighter side and it could be... um back after the one-week break. I like the sound of that.
00:12:11
Speaker
It was a bit with Sam in that I had Hulk Harn's 80, so it wasn't a complete disaster. This week, I'm sort of thinking I'll probably hold, even though you can't loop with him because they play so early, which is a shame. But i'll probably I've still got Farrow and Hulk Harn. I think i may just play one of those guys on field and and wear the one-week because...
00:12:35
Speaker
Yeah, I'm kind of keen to just get another upgrade. So that's sort of where I'm sitting at the moment, mate. But as the week draws on, i could always cave in and chase the points this week.
00:12:49
Speaker
What I don't like, Harmy, is the injury report updated today and they've got him as that TBC, which is never ah never a good sign for concussion.
00:12:59
Speaker
um I think you remember Jack Ross was listed as TBC before his buy and that that went out to about sort of three weeks before he's now copped another one. So... Fingers crossed he's back next week, but it does end up being a bit of a bit of a disaster if he misses another one, right? Because he'll miss that Essendon matchup and then he goes into Sydney, which you know historically James Jordan's done a bit of a job on him, into Port, which is pretty neutral for defenders, but then Gold Coast, which has actually been tough. So what do you do if he misses a second week? Do you just keep holding or...?
00:13:33
Speaker
ah Look, ah yeah, I don't know. i hadn't really thought that far ahead. But if he was to miss a second, then you're probably just going to have to say that was bad luck and trade him next week, I expect.
00:13:44
Speaker
Would you think that James Jordan would run with Whitfield and not Finn Callaghan? Yeah, well, it depends what they what they like to do Sometimes they've obviously got Row Bottom that can go inside and and do a bit more of a job in there.
00:13:57
Speaker
um They've typically, um Jordan has run with Whitfield, but, you know, Jordan's gone. He's done a mixture this year. Sometimes, you know, he was on Bont on the weekend. Sometimes he goes with the the running defender. So, you know, you don't really know what they're going to do. It's just, yeah, if he if he comes back for the Essendon matchup, then clearly you're going to have to get him back in if you've traded him out. which with these sideways trades, it it might be a little bit tricky.
00:14:22
Speaker
Have you looked at any scenarios, Harmi, where you would trade him? Yeah, I have. And I've got some DPP. So as I said, I've got Colby McCurchie in my forward line, so he could always go back and I could bring in forward or a ruck because I've got Marshall in my ruck line. So um Yeah, there's a range of options for me, which is good. But, um yeah, I'll just wait and see. I am kind of keen to hold, so we'll see.
00:14:52
Speaker
I also don't have Naz, which I should have declared straight up, which is part of the reason why I didn't go any good because every other team in the competition seems to have had him most with captaincy. So, um yeah, it's possible that I just chase Nassai now, which, I don't know, I'm kind of also...
00:15:11
Speaker
I'm keen to let that one go maybe as a point of difference. Yeah, they do have some some tougher match-ups coming up. I mean, I yeah i don't know whether I'm going to hold him or not.
00:15:23
Speaker
I'm in a really bad spot where I've actually... I had to play one rookie on field on the weekend, which wasn't too bad, as in faro Farrow came on for me and obviously Hall-Kahan came on for the Whitfield time on ground injury. So if I don't trade him or I don't trade out one of my other players to bring in a defender, I'll have to play both Hugo and Farrow on field this week, which normally would be okay. But Harmi, I... I'm terrified for the Essendon-Brisbane matchup up at the Gabba.
00:15:54
Speaker
I can see a real sort of floor score for Farrow. Yeah, well, after for the last two weeks, and Brisbane have been on fire as well. Kyle, are you thinking about maybe just a couple of potential downgrade targets for Whitfield that might let you do something on the on the other end and if you've got a bit of coin banked. Have you given any thought to someone like Colby McKercher or even a Marcus Wintager who seems to have stepped into the the kind of Sinclair role at Saints?
00:16:24
Speaker
that sizes Well, I mean, for my for my side, Sam, I think the main priority for me is that I need to fix Darcy Cameron, who's just a a shell of himself at the moment. So he yep you don't need much cash at all to to take Cameron to Marshall. It's it's essentially a sideways swap, but the issue with that is it doesn't, I don't have any cash to really do anything significant on the other end. So I wouldn't be able to go up to, you know, a Zorko, for example, who's playing Essendon this week, or even a Noble who has that halfback role. I'd have to go down from Whitfield, whether it be to ah a Wilkie, whether it be to a Brad Hill, who now has the the TPP status, which we're going to get to in a second.
00:17:04
Speaker
And then you kind of just, once again, yeah umm I'm doing the same thing that I've been doing over the last couple of weeks where I took a punt on an aim on and, know, and things like that. So how many trades do I want to do in in the defensive line, Harmy, which is the the question?
00:17:18
Speaker
Yeah, well, that's right. But i mean, if you're looking at a sideways being a Cameron DeMarshall, you probably could be looking at a sideways for Whitfield and Bailey Dales is another that's um a similar price and he's going quite well.
00:17:33
Speaker
Yeah, I'm not sure I can i can get up to him. But, I mean, the other sort of thing I've considered is I've got Fitzgerald on my bench in the midfield, as most of us do. And it's, you know, maybe I do take the opportunity to trade a Finn Callaghan who has the Geelong matchup. So, there's every chance he gets an O'Shea Mullen tag. Yes, he's got Essendon the week after, but then goes into Sydney, which, as we mentioned, might be the James Jordan tag. So,
00:17:58
Speaker
It could be with a bit of DPP to to take Callaghan to ah a better defender, play Fitzgerald on field for a week with the ability to to loop and then then look at the defenders in or whoever it is, midfield or the week after. but It's just a really tricky situation, especially for me. And I've still got Brent Daniels because I had to hold him to get an assire, which, you know, you you get the 160 as captain score, but then you get more injuries.
00:18:25
Speaker
Yeah, I think it's going to be really interesting this week, Sam, as you know you guys are both holding on potentially trading. I think it's going to be a real differentiator for the comp, which is a good thing um just to see how coaches go about it.
00:18:43
Speaker
it's podcast, Sam. That's weird'd actually say something back, but that's all good. No, no, no, no, no. no Yeah. I'm just a little rusty. Yeah. I always go back to what's your biggest, what's your biggest priority and what do you need to trade out the most? And if we're talking about Daniels and Cameron, and I would have thought Finn Callaghan would be somewhere near the bottom of that priority list, but you know, this is why you've finished twice in the in the top 10 or whatever it is, three times, and and I'm out in 20K. So maybe you're thinking two steps ahead of me.

DPP Additions & Draft Reflections

00:19:15
Speaker
it's It's more just the fact that he's still got some money on his head. I'd love to do it with Walsh this week, but...
00:19:21
Speaker
Yeah, he's he's lost a lot of money as well. But the other news was that we have had some new DPP additions. We don't really get too many relevant ones this time of year, but we do have Anderson and Sharp as two relatively popular rookies that now have the the mid-forward flexibility.
00:19:39
Speaker
Murphy Reid now has mid-forward status, which just shows his role change. um for the you know the second half of the season, which has been yeah really good for Freo. Tanner Bruin has defender mid status. So not sure too many people are ah rolling with him.
00:19:56
Speaker
Sam, I did notice that you have him in draft as I went in there to have a look today. Did you just pick him up or you've had him the whole time? No, i yeah I can remember the exact moment I picked up Tanner Bruin in draft. It was when Louis posted in the preseason game saying, holy hat, Tanner Bruin looks amazing. And I immediately dived in and I've held him all year. um he's ah He's been a rollercoaster hold. And of course, I traded him the week. He managed to bounce back for 95 points. But...
00:20:22
Speaker
Overall, he's been in a great pick um as ah as a starting option. I think many of us would have just liked to move, would have liked to have moved him on a bit earlier. Sammy, I'll be pleased to hear that Louis has followed his own advice and still has Tanner Bruin, in fact, in in Classic.
00:20:39
Speaker
ah Yeah, look, he's always taken the holds to extremes. It's probably because he hasn't looked at his team for about a month, Sam, but that's that's all good.
00:20:50
Speaker
um And we do have, a I think, a pretty relevant player, and there was actually ah a question from Henzer about this guy. So Brad Hill now has the triple position status, and the reason that that's relevant, Sam, and I know you're not watching much footy these days, but so Jack Sinclair goes down um in round 15 about you know 10 minutes into that game and and Brad Hill goes into defense scores the 115 he then has his buy and then has a ah career best 159 against the Bombers now we do know that there is a bit of a Bombers tax on these scores but do we think someone like Brad Hill could be an option for the run home
00:21:33
Speaker
ah Yeah, absolutely. I mean, we've seen players in that Saints backline score really well. Nas when he rolls through there, Wilkie, Sinclair, Marcus Windhager when he spends time there. So the the history is there for for Saints halfbacks and Saints defenders. We know they like to chip it around and set up a good defensive structure.
00:21:54
Speaker
um and And Brad Hill's been a good scorer when he's played that kind of more defensive-like wing role. You know, his score suffered um in the years where he was playing a bit of half forward. So, look, again, we talked about potential Whitfield downgrades to free up some cash or maybe you've got a forward line issue like a Brent Daniels to fix up.
00:22:13
Speaker
I don't mind the punt. Gives you a lot of flexibility. um Would it be my first choice? Probably not, but I wouldn't talk people out of it. Yeah, it's just, I mean, it's it's interesting. He's priced at 92. He's averaged around that for the year so far.
00:22:29
Speaker
You know, he's probably close to a top six forward if the run goes as well as it needs to for the end of the year, which is a little bit tough. But, Harmi, if we can see him moving properly into that Sinclair role where we've seen him be that sort of 102 player for the better part of three years, is there a world where, you know, he can average 100 to finish the year and be ah a pretty smash pick?
00:22:51
Speaker
Yeah, look, he could, definitely. like There's been seasons where his average has been close to 100. Not recently because he's getting older and he's just being a bit of a role player for Ross Lyon at Saints. so But yeah, this is the time of year when we see people go on these tears, these runs, isn't it? like And everyone, if you miss the boat, you kind of live to regret it. So, i mean, there' there's a good chance that it could be him.
00:23:18
Speaker
Yep, don't mind the play. And we did say that we were waiting for a ah player to be relevant with the the triple position status. And yeah, far more relevant than Bailey Williams. I suppose Flanders was until the the pressure became too much and he snapped his Achilles.
00:23:36
Speaker
Let's talk a bit of sort of popular players that... coaches potentially would look to trade out being this time of year, luxury trade season. And, you know, those coaches that are up the top and flying, it is definitely one way to

Role Changes & Trade Considerations

00:23:49
Speaker
get an edge. Sam, I'll talk to you about Christian Petrarca first. he's He's been notoriously your boy, still 74% owned in the top 1000. So yeah, really highly owned, but has fallen off a cliff since their buy. think Let me just get the exact stat up, but I believe he was about 25% centre bounces on the weekend, 24%, which is down from the 50% the week prior. So it does seem like the Gold Coast are moving past him as a midfield option. And in that role, he's probably not a top six forward, right?
00:24:25
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, um it has been a hard on over the last six to seven weeks. And another friend of mine who doesn't own him has been reaping the rewards. So he's not he's not punishing non-owners by any means. um Yeah, look, clearly I think the midfield role has deteriorated for him over time. I saw a stat the other day, he's registered one tackle in three games. And and we all know that... um we want our midfielders tackling and marking to get that nice consistent point scoring and and when Gold Coast aren't playing well um you know he's not getting the ball forward of center um and kicking too many goals either to kind of save his score so look I think if you're ah if you're an owner um and you are in a bit of a luxury position then I'd be happy to move him on because we've got some some forwards that are scoring really, really well. The only thing I'll say is his next four read Adelaide, Bulldogs, Carlton and Melbourne.
00:25:24
Speaker
I ah quite like all of those matchups, perhaps aside from the Bulldogs game, um only because I think midfielders tend to struggle against the Dogs midfield a little bit. um But yeah, look, his scores have been so poor. It's just a question of where do you find the money now? Because at 781K, it's almost impossible to take him down. But a pivot to a Rowan Marshall would be really nice this week.
00:25:50
Speaker
Yeah, that's what was, definitely towards a role in Marshall, I suppose. I mean, we've we've spoken about this for the better part of a year and a half now, but these forward line trades, they're so up and down. You just have to look on the week. And as we mentioned, Dugowie put up a 60, Durham put up a 60. It's almost like any given week in a particular matchup,
00:26:08
Speaker
these 60 scores can happen. So I think I'm still probably in the camp of trying to get that 23rd premium at some stage, which is which is where a Brad Hill might come into it to be able to loop across multiple lines there, Harmi. So would you be looking at trading out Petrarca or you think at the moment you just kind of kind of stick fat with it?
00:26:29
Speaker
Ah, they've just been so bad, the Gold Coast. You know, like you sort of expect them to turn it around a bit. But look at these teams they've played since their bye. mean, Sam made a good point. They're going to get better run coming up. They've played against Brisbane, Geelong, Hawthorne, Frio,
00:26:47
Speaker
Not so much Collingwood, but I mean, they've had a bit of a difficult month, but they're just going so bad. ah don't know. I think I'm just going to hold him and hope that he turns it around because, I mean, his career average is over 90. So he should really be putting up better scores than where he's been.
00:27:07
Speaker
Yep. Now, Josh Dacos is 64% owned. I dare say most of the comp are going to be dealing with a Lockie Whitfield this week. um But yeah, he put up another sort of 80-odd score after a big first quarter. He's now coming into that tough run. So maybe he's someone that you might look to to pivot off at some stage, although with these defenders dropping off, he's probably closer to being a top six defender than he was a month ago.
00:27:34
Speaker
Sam Walsh-Harmy. 25% owned in the top 1,000. So a lot of coaches have already jumped off. Lucky them. 69 in a Richmond matchup, which is just ridiculous. As I mentioned, on 50 at halftime and then faded away. Did have back-to-back tons in the two games prior.
00:27:55
Speaker
What are you doing with a Sam Walsh? Yeah, it's tempting to trade him. It's bit disappointing, isn't it? Yeah.
00:28:04
Speaker
Yeah, I don't It's sort of like if he doesn't get it his own way, he really struggles to get a decent score. So I guess at the moment I'm leaning towards holding. don't know.
00:28:16
Speaker
Because you can't trade them all, Holmesy. don't know if you've noticed this. Nah, only two trades a week, Army. Our sides probably aren't going to be complete before the before the end of the year. Yeah, I think I'm going to hold him at the moment, but I can see why good coaches that have got their teams pretty much complete, why they'd be looking to to do it or have already jumped off. The last one here...
00:28:38
Speaker
Darcy Cameron, 15% owned in the top 1,000. Everyone's already jumped off. um You need to abort off him ASAP.

Defensive Trade Targets

00:28:46
Speaker
Rowan Marshall is sitting right there. But what I thought we would do is, before we get into the questions, we're just going to go through each line.
00:28:55
Speaker
And I'm going to go over the top six from the last five, as we do know that typically in the second half of the year, it's not necessarily the players that were the top six in the first half. are going to replicate in the second half, and that's going to generate a bit of a discussion. So in defence, Nassaya 123 over his last five. So he's clearly D1. Harmi, you need to get him probably.
00:29:20
Speaker
John Noble with a ah bounce back to form, so 108. Bailey Dale 105, I think is still a sneaky good option, although I'm not sure whether a Milan-Murdoch tag goes his way.
00:29:32
Speaker
this week, Max Holmes 102, Ash 101 and then Laird 101. Sam, do any of those names really surprise you and are are they all options or would you let some of them go?
00:29:45
Speaker
No, I mean, I think they are all options. I get a bit nervous about Laird with Miller having taken some time out with ah with a small hamstring strain. um And look, we have seen Laird score well in the past as a halfback, but We think about his performance last year. I still think he's more a 90 to 95 guy than that kind of 100 price tag. And I'm not sure i'd be paying 938 for Rory Laird at this point of the season.
00:30:14
Speaker
Yeah, priced at 98. I think I'd be happy to let that one go through to the keeper. Luke Parker, Sam priced at 98, keeps getting it done and does have the best run in terms of North for defenders to finish the year.
00:30:28
Speaker
Is there a chance that he sneaks in to the to the top six and is a good pick to finish the year? Yeah, God, he's been sneaky good this year, hasn't he? um You wouldn't have thought a guy that's played inside mid pretty much his whole life would adapt so well, but... We know how fruitful that the Roos halfback role can be. um Look, he's had Richmond and Essendon in two of his last three for 110s. Before that, he's been putting up sub 100 scores for a while.
00:30:58
Speaker
ah Don't think personally he's good enough to be in our top six considerations with Caleb Daniel and Colby spending time back there. But Harmi, do you have a different take?
00:31:11
Speaker
I was just going to say I probably have Caleb Daniel ahead of Parker, really. yeah And then another one you haven't sort of mentioned is Cal Wilkie. He's probably an option as for us as well.
00:31:26
Speaker
Saved me in draft on the weekend with that 63-point quarter. ah and what's his What's his run? Keep padding here. so Well, I've got another one for you while you're looking at stats.
00:31:37
Speaker
Callum Mills, Geordie's man, just puts up another 100, didn't he, on the weekend? Yeah, playing defence though. He's he's a 90 guy when he when he's playing in defence, isn't he? That was against the Bulldogs, which is the the greenest matchup you can have. So St Kilda back to Wilkie, Harmy, so Port Adelaide, which is a bit red. Then Geelong's pretty neutral or pretty good actually. North, Sydney, Carlton, Richmond and Gold Coast. So not the best run, but he has been getting it done all year.
00:32:05
Speaker
Is he your pick of the underpriced premiums?
00:32:11
Speaker
Oh, he's probably not enormously underpriced either, is he? 93 he's priced up. here Nick Newman, we didn't mention him and he, you know, on his day, he's as good as the rest as well. So, yeah, they're all a little bit of a step off the pace, aren't they? If I was going to pick one, I'd probably go Wilkie, think.
00:32:32
Speaker
Yeah, I was just going to say, I do like Wilkie. We've seen him put up some great scoring in the first half of the year. This is one of those perfect ones where he's you know he's had a couple of niggles, he's had a forward tag, and because of he's had a few bad scores in a row, he's dropped in price. And now we see him bounce back um in a couple of admittedly green matchups against the Dogs and Essendon. But you know we talked about st Kilda backs scoring well. ah This is the one I'd be going with if you're looking for someone in that price range.
00:33:03
Speaker
What about a Sam Banks, Sam? ah You will find Sam Banks ah in the centre of the sun, Holmesy, because that's how far I'm ejecting him out of our atmosphere.
00:33:16
Speaker
So I should pool him in draft? Is that what you're saying? Yeah, mate. Yeah, please do. Fair enough. All right, let's move to the midfielders. A lot of popular names here. So Dacos, Dawson and Heaney as the three guys above 120 in the last five.
00:33:33
Speaker
Will Ashcroft, 117, has been sneaky good for Geordie. Then Zach Merritt, Noah Anderson, Bailey Smith, and then Andy Brayshaw-Harmy, 107 over his last five, including those back-to-back 130s and then backed it up with a ah ton on the weekend.
00:33:51
Speaker
It's hard to get all the way to the top at this time of year, but what do you sort of think with those midfielders if someone is looking to target there this week? Okay. I'll have a look at a few names around that then.
00:34:04
Speaker
i think I probably prefer Dunkley over Brayshaw just for the run and the price. ah Yeah, that Frio, I mean, nothing much has changed. So think he's more like 100 than he is 130, Andy Brayshaw. So, yeah, I don't know. George Hewitt, he's been performing quite well.
00:34:31
Speaker
Zach Merritt, not doing anything wrong. I think they're probably guys that are a touch cheaper that are probably worth having a look at. Zach Merritt priced at 115. Harmy, almost 1.1 mil. Far out. Must be. ah Is that what he's priced at? I wouldn't know because started with him. I've had him since round three, Kyle. Sorry. Fair enough. um Dunkley's an interesting one, Sam. What's your opinion on Dunkley? Me and Selby kind of spoke about it last week.
00:34:57
Speaker
It was pretty much this time to a T last year where it was priced at about 90 after having a a pretty lean run and then just went bonkers to finish the year as you know it gets colder and and the games get a bit more contested to finish the year. Now priced at 92, I think it is, off the back of back-to-back tons.
00:35:18
Speaker
Essendon matchup, is that the type of matchup he'll go well this week or do you think they'll leave it to Ashcroft, Neil and those guys? Yeah, I mean, I don't know. I could definitely, and McCluggage back this week as well, I could definitely see those those three running right against Essendon, you know, picking up a lot of marks and and obviously getting a lot of the ball. um But we do see these guys like Dunkley, like Brayshaw, you know, players that love to tackle ah can have a bounce back at this time of the year.
00:35:46
Speaker
i'm I'm just not sold on either of those guys. I think we talk about Brayshaw for a moment. His role... Changed this year. He's playing more of a defensive style.
00:35:57
Speaker
Frio are playing much less of that kind of, you know, chip 15 meter and build the play up slowly. They're playing a lot faster. um So I'm not sold on Brayshaw, but he does have a decent run and quite a few Optus Stadium games on the run home as well.
00:36:13
Speaker
um I would take him over Dunkley. I just think there's a few too many mouths to feed in that Brisbane Lions midfield at the moment. And I think Dunkley's been the the primary sufferer of of that point sharing.
00:36:27
Speaker
That's all all fair points, Sam. But Harmi, all I heard from that was that we're able to to jump back into humour cluggage this week.
00:36:35
Speaker
Oof, that was a season low there, that period. Yeah, that was rough. Essendon matchup, I'm sure he'll score well from his 55% time on ground that he'll have this week. But, yeah, I mean... not to rub Just to rub it into the Bombers, one more time that we took Andy McGrath, a pick one over Pierre McCluggage. Ooh.
00:36:57
Speaker
Yeah, no no good. I think Lockie Neal is probably not a bad shout for a ceiling game this week against Essendon and then has has West Coast are two pretty good matchups. But i yeah, I dare say he might rest a little bit coming into finals. Will Ashcroft is the one that you'd want to jump into, but priced at 106 now, is he's not cheap. And as you mentioned, there's a yeah lot of mouths to feed there. Let's go into the rucks because the rucks is quite interesting.
00:37:23
Speaker
Outside of Max Gorn, who's gone 113 in his last five, you've got Luke Jackson at 103 and then the rest are, yeah, nowhere at the moment. We talk about Grundy, who's been sharing an out of form, Tim English, who...
00:37:37
Speaker
Yeah, a bit like the Space Jam with the Monstars. He's just completely lost his ability to play football at the moment, a little bit injured. Darcy Cameron, we've already spoken about. Harmi, is it a case of at the moment trying to get in a Rowan Marshall into your ruck line if you need to fix one of the the guys that are outside of ah a Grundy-Korn-Jackson combo and then just waiting for a bit of a a good run over the next sort of five, six weeks?
00:38:04
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. depends who you've got. I mean... If you've got Darcy Cameron, you've got to get out of there as quick as you can, Kyle. um The bad news for Peter Laddum is on the injury front, but obviously that is good news for Brodie Grundy owners.
00:38:19
Speaker
And 1.30 on the weekend reflected that. So, um yeah, I sort of did have a look at Gorn too, though, because ah as I said, I can swing some things and Whitfield could become Gorn. But... Yeah, I think Romar is a given and it's just however you complement him with an R1.
00:38:40
Speaker
Now, Sam, you're a you're a freer man as I am. It's pretty hard to ignore that in the last two games that Sean Darcy has come back into the side that Jackson's been, he's gone you know high 80s and then a low 90s score.
00:38:54
Speaker
Do you think Jackson's going to be the R2 when Sean Darcy's in the side? No, i don't. I think Darcy and Cox are playing a very, very similar role to each other. um i can And I can say that with some confidence because, you know, the Freer games are the only ones that I do watch every week. um But, you know, Darcy's time on ground is low. He is spending a bit of time up forward. Jackson, over the course of the year, you know, with the exception of that five-round run where he just went ballistic, he's had plenty of these 80s, 90s scores. You know, he had 166 last, I mean, two weeks ago against Geelong. admittedly without Darcy in the side. I think he's a guy that's going to yo-yo a bit, but ah i just I wouldn't be worried about trading him out. There's there's there's bigger fish to fry. um I do think Gorn and Grundy are one and two um in in the ruck line to finish the year. And, and you know, Rowan Marshall you can put in there or maybe he's playing forward. But I think Jackson is serviceable enough until we get into, you know, luxury trade season.
00:39:59
Speaker
Yeah, I think you want to maybe look at at Grundy in a few weeks' time. Freo's obviously pretty red this week. Then Adelaide, who McAndrew's been quite tricky to score on, and before he then goes into Briggs, which is ah a 140 score waiting to happen.
00:40:15
Speaker
Forward line. Now, this one, we'll we'll talk a number of options here because the numbers are quite inflated due to Brad Hill's 159 and Max Hall's 140-odd on the weekend. But, you know, Sheezil, a very clear F1. He's gone at 132 over his last five, which is just insane.
00:40:32
Speaker
Harmy, then my boy, Chad Warner, gone at 111 over his last five. Brad Hill, 105. one zero five JHF, Degoe, And then Max Hall, as I mentioned,
00:40:45
Speaker
ah you If you need a trade-in a forward this week, are you looking to get up to one of those guys? Or are because we know that they're quite expensive now and they do have a habit of dropping these basement scores at times, are you looking for a bit of value elsewhere?
00:40:59
Speaker
Oh, well, you'd clearly be looking at the price point of $692,000 and ninety two thousand then you'd find Colby McEacher. No, look... I don't know. do You can't really discount Cozzy Pickett. I mean, he's sitting there and he's put up some huge scores this year. So he's definitely one you'd have to have a think about as well. Richmond this week. Then he's going to have North, which will be a tag, and then Geelong, which is a tag, Harmy. So you might get the ceiling score this week, but then he's going into two pretty tough match-ups.
00:41:33
Speaker
We say the tag. i don't know. There's been games where he's been tagged and kicked three goals and got 30 disposals this year. I mean, yeah, it depends who the player is, I suppose, that's running with him.
00:41:46
Speaker
um ah Other players you could consider? Isaac Rankin, priced 87, had the 91 on the weekend. The time on ground and the centre bouncers are all right up there.
00:41:58
Speaker
Gold Coast into Sydney, into Collingwood. I actually really like Isaac Rankin. And no ownership, which obviously helps you to climb rank if he does score well.
00:42:11
Speaker
Durham, we're giving that one away, Harmy. um st nah i' still I'd still be holding. I mean, i do I'm an owner. um Even in the first half, i think he still went okay, didn't he? So, yeah, I mean, points per minute, he he can really score with the best of them. So I'm still like okay with Durham. He did play midfield. The Bombers just got smoked. so Sam, let's go through the I mean, he he was the main target last week and he still probably is this week. Rowan Marshall, um I'm just getting up the injury list as I speak because I wanted to see Tom DeConing, yep, still TBC. So,
00:42:51
Speaker
Roel Marshall put up the 118 on the weekend, which has been the the highest score against the Bombers all year in terms of rucks. Has Port Adelaide this week, which has been typically a bit of ah a tougher matchup, having Sweet, who's a pretty good ruckman or defensive ruckman, and then still having Vicentini as the backup. But then goes Geelong, which is as green as it gets before North Melbourne, which you know their ruck line's in shambles at the moment. Is it as simple as jumping onto Roel Marshall this week?
00:43:20
Speaker
Yep, yep, absolutely. Clear number one target in both the ruck line and the forward line. I was um fortunate enough to to take the punt on him last week. um But I think even Jordan Sweet, you know, he's a ruckman that dominates hit outs.
00:43:34
Speaker
We know Rowan Marshall, you know, it doesn't score a huge amount of hit outs. He loves to tackle. He loves to mark. He loves getting disposals. I still think he'll put up a very respectable score against Jordan Sweet. And, you know, that price tag is is too hard to ignore when he's gone back-to-back 110s in previous seasons.

Listener Questions & Trade Debates

00:43:57
Speaker
Do you think the Saints are sitting there at the moment and they're wondering why we've just paid up $1.6 million dollars a year for Tom De Koning? I think pretty much the entire AFL competition and um every single fan wondered the same thing when they paid $2 million dollars or whatever it was for Tom De Koning. Yeah.
00:44:15
Speaker
Yeah, ah you know, there are a lot of problems at the Saints and I don't think the Ruck Department was a huge one. Yeah, far out. Marshall's actually very, very serviceable. Yeah, he doesn't win the hit-outs very often and they have struggled at times to to be dominant in the midfield because of it. But, I mean, Tom DeConing wasn't doing much better. So they looked very good on the weekend. All right, let's get stuck into the questions to finish off the podcast. Harmi, the first one is from good friend of the show, Bontsville Wizard.
00:44:45
Speaker
Hey, lads, I'm still playing HHK on field and my other defender rookies aren't fielding options. He can either trade out Whitfield to Wilkie and then Day to Dunkley for the Bombers matchup and then he wants to get Whitfield back from after his concussion. So do you like Whitfield to Wilkie and then Day to Dunkley? Yeah, I think Wilkie and Dunkley are two good trade-in options. So, yeah, I'd be pretty comfortable with them.
00:45:13
Speaker
Sam, do you do you think it's as simple as just jumping to to Josh Dunkley this week?
00:45:19
Speaker
Yeah, I'm... I mean, ah yeah, it's fine. It's fine. um If you're if you've already fielding HHK, then I think these are two um acceptable punts to take at this point of of the season. Just know that you're you know you're not getting a top six defender um or a top eight midfielder probably in either of those players unless things you know go really right for them.
00:45:48
Speaker
The one thing I will say about Will Day has Carlton this week, which will be ah a pretty contested game. So you think he he's probably the player that tackles and and actually scores a ride. And then he has the Richmond matchup followed by Essendon. So does have three pretty good matchups to come, but he's not someone want So Dunkley. Yeah, so does Dunkley, correct. Yeah, yeah that Hawks midfield though is interesting at the moment, right? You know, none of them are scoring particularly well.
00:46:14
Speaker
um Day's had ups and downs. ah i't I don't know if he's necessarily going to get anywhere near the top eight midfielders, even for the rest of this year, but incredibly talented um player. So they'll definitely be you'd think they'd be wanting to get him the ball, but the the Hawks have shared it around all year.
00:46:33
Speaker
Yeah, you can see the process. We know Day's not going to get anywhere near the top eight mids, but we know that Dunkley has the potential to. So it's the type of move that can really propel you up. And if it doesn't work, then obviously you just say that you're backing your process as it doesn't always work out.
00:46:50
Speaker
Sam, this one is from Nathan Russell, louis Louis and Vam's boy here. So is it too late in the season for good teams to take a ride with Zeke Uland? And how does he affect Noble's fantasy stocks?
00:47:03
Speaker
ah Yeah, it is. upll No, I wouldn't be jumping on Zeke Uland. um I think we all had him earmarked as potentially being a very good rookie scorer at the start of the year. um Or am I getting my Ulands mixed up?
00:47:18
Speaker
No, no, that's all right. Okay, good. You know, I just, for a moment, you know, I've been the game, been a bit rusty, just wanted to make sure. um ah But this is kind of a bit of a flash in the pan um score from him. i i just, I wouldn't be doing it. it's I don't think it's the time. we look Look at Sam Banks, right? I tried to get cute and and you know maybe um almost sideways trade a rookie and in the hope of a guy that could maybe do 80 or 90 and it's completely cooked me and i'm and I'm trading him out two weeks later. And I could definitely see that happening with someone like C. Kuland.
00:47:53
Speaker
The one thing I will say about Zeke is that from my eye at least, he's had a role change in the last two games. So he played Frio the week before and I was at that game and he was definitely playing more off halfback and scored the 86 points, which was pretty good against Frio in the wet.
00:48:10
Speaker
And then he backed it up with the 146 against Collingwood. I mean, I don't know if you watched that game. I watched it quite closely, but Gold Coast had a very clear back to their game plan of just holding onto the footy and chipping it around in their back line, which as we saw, you know, Zeke put up the 140 odd. Noble put up the 130. There were some other defenders that put up some good scores as well.
00:48:32
Speaker
does it Does it affect Noble? i think I think Noble's an option now that he's moved back into defence. I think... You're never going to know what Hardwick's thinking, but you know they probably admitted that he wasn't they weren't getting enough out of him on the wing. And so they put him back into defense and he gets his fair share of cheap ball, but he does also you know give him a bit of drive out of defense. So on that on the flip side of that question, is Noble an option now?
00:48:55
Speaker
Yeah, well, if you look at the question, is it too late in the season for good teams to take a ride on Zeke Uland? Yes, it is too late. And how does it affect Noble's fantasy scoring? Well, it doesn't.
00:49:06
Speaker
Like, Noble put up 130, which is huge. And if anything, kind of helped him, didn't it? Because he had somebody to um chip it around with. So, yeah, that's probably where I sit. I think Zeke Uland, that score, he really puts himself in the frame for fantasy coaches to think about him next season, doesn't it?
00:49:26
Speaker
Yeah, especially yeah if he holds that defensive role. Harmi, I'll stick with you from Digby. If you could trade in one of the following premiums this week, who would you pick? So Heaney, Baz or Ashcroft? ah I'd have to say Baz because he's the...
00:49:46
Speaker
He's probably the guy that's going to average the most, isn't he? He didn't have a great game on the weekend, still scored 126, didn't he? He was being able run with for a while. So i think the he's got the he's got the track record that it's him.
00:49:59
Speaker
But Ashcroft does have a great run and Heaney's just about in career-best form. So they could all be good picks, but i'd be going Baz if he had the choice. Sam, you're getting Baz this week. So um you're obviously going him over Ashcroft. I'm not sure if you have him, but do you have Isaac Heaney?
00:50:16
Speaker
No, I don't have Isaac Heaney. I just assumed that I don't have any good players, actually, Carl. That's you know part of the reason I'm getting Baz this week. um Yeah, I would say Baz as well. I think he'll sleep better. But wowee, Ashcroft, I didn't actually realize this. He has Essendon and then West Coast in his next two. Holy hat.
00:50:34
Speaker
um Yeah, he might put up 150 in both of those. So, um you know... The safer option, i can't believe I'm saying that, safer at 1.1 mil or whatever he is, he's Baz. But who if you're if you're looking to save a bit of coin, take a pun on Will, definitely.
00:50:53
Speaker
Sam, the next one is from Forrest. Would you trade out Walsh or Rao? So those two players, who are you trading out first? Ooh.
00:51:04
Speaker
Let me just see what Rao's been doing lately, but I don't think it's been much. I mean, I was looking at Rao as trading in target um a few weeks ago, but he's put on note put on you know no decent scores. um last So his last month has been 101, 103, 79, and 82. Has Adelaide, Bulldogs, Carlton, and then Melbourne in his next four.
00:51:30
Speaker
I would say they're pretty even. The only thing is I like Rau's run of four for it for a tackler. um you know Adelaide still playing a pretty contested style of game. I feel like Rau could get some good tackles there at the Adelaide Oval. We know that he generally performs a bit better at People First Stadium, which is where he plays the Dogs and Melbourne.
00:51:53
Speaker
um ah I'd have Rouse slightly ahead, but honestly, it's very hard. you know I think we react a lot to Walsh's one-off score against Richmond, but he's had a decent stretch of four or five weeks before that.
00:52:05
Speaker
um I'd trade Walsh slightly ahead. Yeah, I'd trade Raoul personally. he's the We've spoken about this this year with the the way that the game's kind of changed and Raoul is definitely in the Caleb Sorong LDU mould of player very much inside the contest, which we've seen stoppages drop and and the tackles drop and when he was on going on his tear last year, he was getting sort of the 85%, 90% centre bounces. And we've seen over the last two weeks, Rau's been 56% and then 62%. So he's not he's not getting the that plum midfield role that we've seen in the past because they've you know they've added Petrarca and took Millers back in there and they're playing some rookies as as they're out of form. So...
00:52:50
Speaker
you know if If you're going to punt that that role is going to turn around, then maybe holding. But I think, yeah, I think Rau's the one to go and Walsh probably lives to fight another day. He has Hawks this week. So bit tougher, but you think he'd get up for that one.
00:53:04
Speaker
Harmi, this is our last one. So this is from Sean. Hey guys, I'm going English to martha Marshall for both trades. Tick that one off 100%, but which option for the second trade is better? So he has 22 primo. So option Whitfield to Holmes, Walsh to Bont with HHK covering Whit or Swaddling to Franco. So is it the sideways trade of Whit?
00:53:28
Speaker
Is it fixing up an underperforming primo and covering with a rookie for a week? Or is it fixing up with some cash on the bench? just ah i don't think we have heard anything about Holmes' as' injury from the weekend, have we? So we're assuming that he's good to go and there's no drama because... i i checked the injury. I was kidding. There's no point being July.
00:53:54
Speaker
I could definitely see this shaping as a laid out. That's frustrating because I brought him in. That was the one I bloody chose as my upgrade this week. And i was just going to check the Bulldogs because they also have got who this week? I sort of remember him. West Coast.
00:54:14
Speaker
Looking at it. Yeah. Well, Yeah, I suppose it's Hoff running with Bont, isn't it? Which shouldn't affect him too much. um Look, if it were me, I'd probably go Whitfield to Holmes out of those three. I just don't see much point in the swaddling to Franco move. Yeah, so it's one or two, but I'd probably take Holmes.
00:54:42
Speaker
Yeah, I think with Fielder Holmes as well. Bont, I think, is going to be someone that we want for the run home. But, yeah, Eagles have shown that there they're happy to tag. And,
00:54:53
Speaker
Bont's been a little bit so susceptible sorry to a tag this year. So I think with that 130-odd break even, I think we wait just a little bit longer to get him and and Holmes is going to be a top six defender to finish the year. But boys, that is going to wrap us up. As always, thanks for jumping on. Sam, I'm not sure the next time we're going to hear your voice on here. So why don't you give the listeners a bit of a closing statement?
00:55:16
Speaker
I mean, the listeners won't need to worry about not hearing my voice. Obviously, there's a session plan is in place and um I'll be hosting PodPOD in 2027. Please, please. Holmesy, you know, you're not going to finish top 10 this year. So, you know, maybe it's time to retire and hang up the boots.
00:55:35
Speaker
And so, yeah, listeners can look forward to hearing plenty from me. But I would just say enjoy the run home. um Do some coin flips to decide your trades because, Time is a construct and nothing
