New Manager Will Steele: Announcement and Optimism

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Southampton, part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Greg Elliott. Today joined by the full Southampton cohort, my good friends, wonderful co-hosts.
00:00:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oscar, how doing?
00:00:21
Oscar
Yeah, well, good. Thank you.
00:00:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good, Zach, how you doing?
00:00:24
Zak
Yeah, mate. For change.
00:00:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good, yeah. Well, at time of recording, we are officially reached, or Sky Sports have announced we have reached, a verbal agreement with Will Steele to be our new manager.
00:00:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whether we announce that as soon as it happens or wait until Sunday, I guess, remains to be seen. But, ah ah Oscar, you feeling nice and positive about that as an
00:00:51
Oscar
Yeah, I think so. Like, I've i've been sort of looking into into him a little bit over the last couple of days and trying to figure out how um um how he'll work in line with with our players and our squad and even what that's going to look like next year. And obviously not quite the level of Zach's detailed research. But I think it's...
00:01:14
Oscar
think it's Good in a number of ways because it's ah ah a i think it's quite an exciting prospect. Obviously there's a risk with it. um um And I know a lot of people would throw, ah you you know, just we're hiring someone that just because he's good at football manager or he's played football manager, but there's obviously so much more to it than that. um um And what's nice about it is I've been trying to look into his last few seasons to figure out how we might play going forwards.
00:01:43
Oscar
And it's actually quite difficult to do because he's changed formation about five or six. He actually changes things when things aren't working, which is a real novel idea for for us.
00:01:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Can I get hallelujah?
00:01:53
Oscar
yeah
00:01:57
Oscar
So, yeah, I mean, i've I've looked and he's done about four or five different systems over the last few years. So, yeah, I think it could be an interesting one.

Early Managerial Decisions and Squad Assessment

00:02:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and I mean, it it feels like from Zach's first profile episode, I felt like this is the most promising candidate. It seems like such a versatile manager, experience of doing well with the relatively low budget.
00:02:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, ah ah just it seems to tick all the boxes and getting it done this early feels as important as anything else, right?
00:02:29
Oscar
Yeah, I think so.
00:02:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Zach, you feel him youre feeling good about it? You think getting the business done this early is a good sign of the decisions going in the right direction?
00:02:38
Zak
Yeah, as as we've already kind of pointed out, it's an exciting prospect, not without risk, but name name me the perfect championship manager.
00:02:47
Zak
but like it
00:02:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sam Allardyce. LAUGHTER
00:02:52
Zak
ah ah pain you cause on a daily basis, mate. Yeah. Yeah, I i think that it's an exciting prospect. I said, like, I'm really hoping that now everyone seems to be knocking out Profile Sefer and centre, which is nothing but great because it just means that people are starting to understand that he is more than just this football manager, manager that, you know, it's lazy journalism. Like Alfie House tweeted out to somebody that it's lazy journalism to call him that.
00:03:17
Zak
And like I think it's true because like clearly he's done a lot with his career and it's an exciting prospect. I'm looking forward to it. I think it's very important we get over the line sooner rather than later. just because the I think it ah him a chance to assess who he can work with and who he can't, as opposed to just randomly making sweeping recruitment changes off the basis of not working.
00:03:40
Zak
you know if if If somebody doesn't gel with him straight away and it doesn't look like it's going gel over time, we know we can get rid of that person early on rather than try and drag that out over the entirety of the summer.
00:03:50
Zak
like We know summer's going to be massive. So, yeah, to be able to start stamping that identity and essentially from Sunday remove remove this entire season from our memory...
00:04:02
Zak
At least, not the lessons we've learned, but like the general vibe needs to change. And I think that that would be something that changes it.
00:04:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:11
Oscar
I think as well it it gives it gives him the chance to look at who who he's going like you just said, like who he's going to want and who he's going to, and actually to start for the players to think,
00:04:23
Oscar
oh, okay, before they go away on holiday and before they go away, that this is maybe somewhere i might want to stick around. I know we've said in the past there's not that many we're actually too bothered about if they stick around or not. But at least he can then have a look and see what fits for him and have a conversation with those players before they all go away and start thinking about, you know, this I'm going here, there and everywhere.
00:04:42
Oscar
Maybe there's the chance to persuade some of the ones that we might want to stay that this is the place to be or it's going to be an exciting project.
00:04:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think it's it's good groundwork, sensible statement. I think that it was important, you know, getting rid of Juric as early as we did, that we, you know, took charge of that and got someone in you know, by the end of the season.
00:05:05
Zak
Mm-hmm.
00:05:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because otherwise, what was the point in all of it? If we, if you know, if we get to pre-season and we still haven't got a manager in place, what what's the point? What are we doing? So...
00:05:18
Oscar
I think maybe it's nice that they seem to be learning from their mistakes and not just
00:05:23
Oscar
sitting on their hands and waiting for something to happen. They're being proactive now. And I think part of the reason that people are saying Danny Roll, who I think I believe, I'm led to believe was the number one target, that they moved on from him is because he's willing to sit around and wait for his options to come in.
00:05:39
Oscar
So they've said, okay, we're going to go with that we're going to go with number but the next option then. So, you know, it's good that they are trying to be a bit more proactive now. Maybe it's a hopeful sign.
00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that's definitely the the vibe I'm taking from it. Like, it's... Let's just hope that they've learnt from all of their mistakes and we just don't have as disastrous of a transfer window with the players we bring in.
00:06:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's the That's the main hope, right? Like, this is a step in the right direction, you know, hiring someone that I'm feeling positive about, but...
00:06:07
Zak
They
00:06:11
Zak
keep bringing lots of people to make sure that doesn't end up that way, right?

Squad Lineup and Tactical Flexibility

00:06:16
Zak
I think like they're doing a lot more... analysis on players rather than vibes or they scored all right last season.
00:06:24
Zak
And I think that's, that can only be a good thing. And, know, we've also still got a lot of players that are youth prospects that we've not really seen. We've got people coming back from Gestepi. We've got sort of players coming back off loan, like a Dozie coming back from a Champions League club, Europa League club.
00:06:44
Zak
You've got Shea Charles coming back. We've got a lot of talent in the squad already that we we do this thing. like we're We're all guilty of it as well, where we kind of we talk about all of the players on loan.
00:06:56
Zak
We'll think about with the players on loan. We'll talk about how exciting that prospect is. And then we almost completely forget we've got like you know not an entire squad's worth, but near enough. that are away, that coming back to the club next season. So even if all of the players do go over the summer that we, you know, would be upset about, we've still got quite a few that are ready, you know, especially people like Adosie, right? He had a season in the Championship already.
00:07:18
Zak
h Charles had a season in the Championship already. We've got some of that kind of players ready for it. So, yeah, I think that, you know, recruitment is going to be really, really important to get right, don't get me wrong.
00:07:32
Zak
but I think that we already have resources in the club that are probably going to stay, at least to my understanding, that will make the whole thing a bit but a bit more bearable. not going to say bearable. We'll say exciting for your sake, Greg.
00:07:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
i yeah I'm already bouncing for next season. It's going to be, you know, taking Leicester out of the equation with a points tally just basically confirms the league win, right?
00:07:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, the silence was deafening.
00:07:59
Oscar
Yeah.
00:07:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right, well...
00:08:00
Zak
Just thinking of our 5-0 loss to Leicester at the end of this championship season, that's probably one of the contributing factors to us. Our downturn in form during that period of time is why we dropped out of the top two.
00:08:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right, well, we're going carry on this discussion, but first a message from our partners at Bionique.
00:08:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so Oscar, I wanted to ask you some questions. said you'd done a bit of digging in these sort of five or six different systems.
00:09:02
Oscar
Yeah.
00:09:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is there any sort of common theme? What sort of...
00:09:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
What are expecting?..................
00:09:07
Oscar
Not really in terms of the formation. He's jumped between a back four and a back three. This season, he's been more with a back three. but he has dropped into a four at times. like he's adapts He adapts depending on the situation, depending on the players.
00:09:22
Oscar
I think he was he was in a back four when he had Kusanov, who's now at City, and Danzo as his centre-backs.
00:09:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:09:31
Oscar
And he's now changed to a three more recently in the sort of second half of the season. A lot of the stuff I looked at, it was heavily counter-pressing. So dropping into a mid block, so just sort of blocking up sort of middle area, central area, and counter pressing basically in attacking and transitions and lots of getting the ball forwards and crossing the ball into the box, which again is quite refreshing because that's sort of something that's died from football recently, actually crossing a ball, especially if we've got two of the tallest strikers in the league.
00:10:08
Oscar
if they're still there. so But again, adapt adaptability seems to be a big thing, but just having a bit of a plan. And I think playing against the ball is just so much a more realistic ah realistic prospect when you're going to be in the Premier League. And let's face it, 90% of the time, we're going to be without a ball.
00:10:26
Oscar
So most recently, fresh off the back of, I think the last game was a 4-0 win against Monaco, so not exactly too bad. he played a 3-4-3. So I think that suits that suits what we've been doing quite well, 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2. I think we've got the players for that.
00:10:44
Oscar
And actually, just going through, in terms of our squad, you know what you said about transfers. we've this This is a starting XI I've put together, assuming that the ones we've that have been linked with moves away are going. So that is your Ramsdales, Benarek, Harwell Bellis, Fernandes, Walker-Piers, maybe Dibbling as well.
00:11:04
Oscar
But actually looking at it, you're right, Zach, even without any additions, for me, I think that's a good enough squad to compete in the championship. So you've got Bozzuno in goal, maybe a new goalkeeper. Ronnie Edwards, Jack Stephens and Nathan Wood as a back three.
00:11:20
Oscar
Yuki Sugawara maybe will be there, maybe won't, but he seems to be the sort of player that will really suit his system, like the dynamic right right wing back or right back that bombs forward. One thing it does highlight is aggression in against the ball in the midfield. So that suits Flynn Downs down to the ground. So you' got Downs and Charles in the middle, Ryan Manning on the left.
00:11:41
Oscar
Will Smallbone maybe in a slightly more, maybe we might need a number 10 if that's an area we're a bit light on if Fernandes goes. So I put Will Smallbone there for now. And Ross Stewart and Cameron Archer up front.
00:11:54
Oscar
You know, for me, that is a pretty competitive championship team. that you'd look at, Ross Stewart, is he going to be fit enough to do it?
00:11:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:03
Oscar
He seems to be okay at the moment and he seems to have a point to prove. So, you know, without even spending any money, and I think realistic in terms of the players we keep, and that's, you know, Tyler Dibbling's not even getting in that team. I think realistically, you know, if you go for a three, then he starts.
00:12:19
Oscar
And then then all of a sudden the change is you've got Dibbling, a striker and Sam Madozi as your front three. And again, think that's a pretty decent prospect as well. So i think i think interesting some interesting and and good attributes.
00:12:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:36
Oscar
One thing that did raise my eyebrows a little bit, which maybe be he'll fit in with Southampton quite well, two weaknesses that it says on who scored of Lons last season was finishing chances and protecting Leeds, which I think that sounds very Southampton-y.
00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh dear.
00:12:53
Zak
I...
00:12:53
Oscar
yeah
00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
think that's I think that's really interesting. You're right. That's like quite a promising line-up. And I mean, you said Diblin doesn't make that squad unless it's a three, but didn't he play as a 10 under-21 level?
00:13:07
Oscar
Yeah.
00:13:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
So but maybe that's a job, but certainly at the sort of championship level, maybe that's something that he could really come back into his element for.
00:13:08
Oscar
Yeah, that's true. That might be a good shot.
00:13:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it'd be an interesting line-up.
00:13:16
Oscar
Yeah.
00:13:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, this obviously still a couple of areas you'd want to improve there. Like you say, probably a number 10, maybe a striker because you just can't rely on, you know, Stuart's fitness and

Reputation and Player Stigma

00:13:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Archer hasn't exactly hit the ground running so far, although I think we can all see the promise there.
00:13:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
A couple of fullbacks.
00:13:40
Zak
this This, by the way, this is this is also assuming we don't have Adam Armstrong back. like that Is West Prom just going to buy him?
00:13:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:13:47
Zak
Is that the consensus we've come to? Because, you know, we might end up with an abundance of strikers and that might be a problem.
00:13:49
Oscar
I'm burnt to BS. Yeah.
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah and well Yeah, when you pull pull the curtain back a bit and think about it, it's there's a lot of hope there, really, considering how poorly this season is has gone and has sort of peered out.
00:14:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a promising...
00:14:09
Oscar
yeah I think think, you know, probably in reality we do lose more than those players. I'm not blind to that. I was looking at the amount of players we lost last time we went down and it is pretty eye-opening if you look back at it. I think there's, you know, 10, 15 players that left.
00:14:26
Oscar
But I genuinely just look at this squad and think, I can i can't don't look at them and think, oh yeah, some will line up to buy him, some will line up to buy him. I just think, in reality, they probably are about suited to where they are. so
00:14:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. Hmm.
00:14:42
Zak
when When you are second worst all-time Premier League, that is that, yeah, you're right, that you are going to be tarnished with that reputation. And as i said as I said in the build-up to you know the that you the you'd want to fight for the pride to not be part of the worst Premier League team of all time.
00:15:01
Zak
And they've managed to achieve that. But there are still going to be like...
00:15:06
Zak
Here's his's a fun Zach tangent that is related, I promise. A long, long time ago, i worked for a video game retailer. And a video game retailer that I worked for at one point, you specifically the shop I worked for, put out a spoiler for the release of a release date of a game about 12 hours before the official announcement was going to happen.
00:15:28
Zak
Because somebody, when reading the like launch document, just skipped past the page that went, don't put this up on socials. And that ruined a probably couple hundred thousand pound marketing plan where they were going to take over Times Square, right?
00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:15:47
Zak
And that resulted in you know a bunch of panic stations being hit. I was at the time at university and I was one of the only people that had the logins to the socials. I didn't tweet any of this out, but they couldn't delete the tweet because they did it for a thing called TweetDeck and they couldn't actually log into Twitter.
00:16:07
Zak
So I come out of my lecture with about 15 missed calls. And the point of this story is that like five years down the line, when people from that company were coming to visit the store, when there was like a big discussion in a boardroom, they were like, huh, that place in Eastleigh, isn't that the one that completely ruined everything?
00:16:29
Zak
And that is you know exactly how it's going to be.
00:16:32
Zak
The point of that is, is that... That was what our store was remembered for. Not the fact that we broke the top like five sales for the company for all of their games in like five years afterwards. and It was the fact that whenever we were mentioned, it was, weren't they the guys that accidentally leaked our game and ruined our worldwide launch? It's like, yes.
00:16:54
Zak
Yes, we were. And that is how some of these players are going be looked at, right? Where...
00:16:58
Zak
weren't they ones that were part of that really, really bad Southampton team?
00:17:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:17:02
Zak
And that is going to be like some of these players, it's going to stick with them for a while. And obviously history fades and people forget less, but it, you know, it's up to... the idea that a lot of them seem to think they're just going to move straight into a Premier League squad is, you know, ah ah it's wild to me.
00:17:18
Zak
There are like maybe two or three, right? Maybe Fernandes, who probably has held his head high the entirety of the season.
00:17:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:17:24
Zak
Carl Walker-Peters clearly has probably got some offers, but let's face it, one of the offers he did have in January was Galatasaray, which isn't exactly like Liverpool, right? So, yeah it's it's just one of those things where you want, you're always going to have that you were part of that squad.
00:17:43
Zak
So maybe they should just like, you know, take their heads out of the clouds a little bit and and pay attention to reality. That doesn't mean I necessarily want to keep them all. As Greg has also pointed out, I'd happily sack a lot if if it if they don't want to be here, to be clear.
00:17:57
Zak
But, you know, going forward, they're going to have to live with that and we're going to have to deal with the fact that we're probably going to be stuck with more of the players, in my opinion, than we think we are, maybe?
00:18:10
Zak
that I don't know, but it's <unk> ah it's a thing, right?
00:18:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is a thing. All right, I've got some points to add, but first a message from our partners at Zencaster.

Player Departures and Market Movements

00:18:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
There are going to be players who think they want to go who aren't going to be able to go. There are to be players that we want to see stay that might well end up going. It's going to be...
00:19:01
Zak
And, mate, there's players we keep forgetting about. Because because when I mentioned Adam Armstrong, I had completely forgotten about Berylton Diaz.
00:19:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:10
Zak
I
00:19:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, and you' you're right as well. like The types of players like Ryan Fraser, like what happens to him? ah I I can't remember. Was he only on a one-year contract when we brought him in? just Is that finished?
00:19:22
Oscar
I forgot
00:19:22
Zak
want to say maybe a two, wasn't it?
00:19:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. It's just going to be...
00:19:26
Oscar
about Rebo as well.
00:19:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, I think think it's going to be a very interesting summer heading into the next season. I guess the only hope that I take from it is that by the time we kick a ball...
00:19:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
the first day, first game of the championship, I hope that we're settled a bit like we have because the last time we went down, it was horrible, right? We still had James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Teller in the squad every week for the first couple of weeks and then they both, you know, everyone knew Ward-Prowse was going.
00:20:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's...
00:20:03
Oscar
Do you think if there's any world in which, I know I'm not trying to go down the complete nostalgia route, but in which he comes back? Because let's face it, he can't get in the West Ham squad who are Tottenham and Man United away from being the next in line to be to go down.
00:20:18
Oscar
So if he can't get in that squad...
00:20:19
Zak
I think he's he's been a bit about more in that squad since Potter's come back. like That's come in.
00:20:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:20:25
Zak
i've I've noticed a lot. He's been around there significantly more.
00:20:27
Oscar
Right.
00:20:29
Zak
i I don't know if it's a it It really depends, right? If the actual reason was that he wanted to get into the England squad that clearly just isn't going to happen at this rate, that's just not going to happen, then I could see him coming back.
00:20:38
Oscar
That
00:20:43
Zak
Do I see him coming back...

James Ward-Prowse's Potential Return

00:20:46
Zak
like unless it's the end of his career probably not I think if he's still got another two three years I think he's happy to kind of fight for his place there plus he's still got a record to fight for in the Premier League and ain't gonna get that in the Championship but I wouldn't i would might i it be averse to seeing him back but I also don't think that
00:20:56
Oscar
is true. Yeah.

Oscar
Yeah, I'm not one for, you know, let's just go down all the old routes, let's get Redmond back, let's get Danny Ings back, let's get this, that and the other. I do think that is one that if he's not getting game time there, you know, makes sense, adds to our squad, fits the bill.
00:21:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
it sad He's had 14 starts for West Ham this season and, you know, bear in mind he was out on loan at Forest for half the season, I think.
00:21:20
Oscar
Okay, so he's been playing more than I thought.
00:21:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it shows himself as, yeah, i think he's shown himself as sort of in and around
00:21:25
Oscar
How much has he played since being outpaced by a goalkeeper? I don't know you saw that when Raya sprinted back past him.
00:21:30
Zak
I think also it's the... Just while we're having an aside on James Ward Proud, it's just like playing basically every minute of football for us ever. Every single cup game he was part of, he basically never missed out a squad.
00:21:48
Zak
When we had all those injury crises, this is why he was filling in in like right back and stuff because he was always a part of the squad. It must be strange to then go then... not have not play like a lot and, and kind of be sat on the bench significantly more.
00:22:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:22:03
Zak
And again, like it's, it shows that the grass isn't always greener and like, we can all put the hypotheticals of if he'd stayed and what had happened and this is any other.
00:22:13
Zak
Yeah, it's it's just a... It would be interesting to see where if if he he and Danny Ings were some of our like best players that moved on in recent memory, I'm not talking about Yamane's and I'm not talking about Yolanda's and stuff like that.
00:22:26
Zak
If they were some of our better players in recent memory that have moved on, what about the players that are moving on now? Where are they going to end up? Like, you know...
00:22:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:22:34
Zak
who's going to be, if they're happy to all the bench, sure, but it'll be interesting to see if some of these players think they're getting into the starting All I can think of is Benirector Villa. Remember that?
00:22:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's going to be fascinating.
00:22:48
Zak
Hmm.
00:22:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know. I don't know. Even the hypothetical of if Ward Proust stayed, do we stay? I mean... I love James Will Prowse. I think he was brilliant for us, but he he already had a lot of sideways and backwards to his game. And I don't know if that would better under Russell Martin. So, don't know. An interest interesting one to visit in a what if in the future, no doubt.

But, well, that's just all we've got time for today. i can't believe it's absolutely flown by. the time this goes out, maybe we've had full confirmation.
00:23:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
If not, I'm fully behind Oscar's idea of the old school half-time reveal on Sunday. I'm fully down for that.
00:23:27
Zak
Same. I agree. That'd be good.
00:23:28
Oscar
yeah
00:23:29
Zak
And also that was a lovely bit of analysis, Oscar, from the side of things that I'm really bad at. Like I really kind of enjoyed the idea of, oh, this is how we might actually line up next season, especially with the players that we've got.
00:23:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:23:42
Zak
didn't kind of like, you know, that that side of things, because I can, I can, I'm really good at regurgitating information, like all historians.
00:23:49
Oscar
Thank you.
00:23:49
Zak
But I really, really enjoyed that little bit of analysis. and I think it was, it's good.
00:23:53
