As the title says, sometimes life changes our plans. I had one of those plan-changing occurrences this past weekend, and this brief episode talks about it, and how it is impacting me.
Main episode music is CCL 2006, by Curt Sifert, titled "A Young Church".

Hello and welcome to the Full Spectrum Holistic Health Podcast. This podcast is all about holistic health, what it is, various holistic and alternative health therapies, and how those may help you to be a healthier and happier person. Thanks for choosing to listen today. I know there are many podcasts out there for you to choose from, and I'm glad you are here.

Dr. Burton's Background

00:00:26
Speaker
I'm the host for the podcast, Dr. Anthony Burton. I'm a Reiki master, EFT therapist,
00:00:32
Speaker
meditation teacher, and a shamanic practitioner. My goal is to help people be healthier in body, mind, and spirit, and that's why I'm here. A large part of what I do is educational in nature because so many people are unaware of the power and efficacy of various holistic and alternative therapies. In these podcasts, we'll hear stuff that will inform you, enlighten you, and help energize and balance you.
00:01:00
Speaker
Of course, it won't always be only my opinions and ideas because occasionally I will be interviewing knowledgeable and interesting guests from a variety of areas of holistic and complementary health practices. So kick back and relax, open your mind, and listen.

This past weekend was another time. Actually, I had planned to post next about a different topic related to the arrival of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and a specific way of improving your health related to being outdoors.

Car Accident Experience

00:02:10
Speaker
However, this past Sunday morning, my lovely wife and I were headed to our first in-person church service since the beginning of the pandemic.
00:02:21
Speaker
We were running a little late, so I probably was not paying as much attention to my speed as I should have been. We came around a curb near the entrance to a recreational lake area. And there was a car that apparently was turning in there. Honestly, I didn't see any turn signals nor brake lights. But I'm sure the driver of the other car was following the rules. I mean, I'm not accusing anybody of anything.
00:02:46
Speaker
My vehicle is a large and heavy one. It's a King Cab pickup truck, so it's a bit heavy. And mass times acceleration equals force, as physics is reputed to say. Well, there were cars coming toward me in the left-hand lane, so veering over to the left was not an option. On the right, there was a large metal guardrail, so I could not leave the road.
00:03:16
Speaker
I stood on my brakes but was unable to come to a complete stop, and I impacted the rear of the other vehicle. Our airbags did not deploy because we were under that set speed for deployment, but my wife and I were, thankfully, both wearing our safety belts.

Challenges and Recovery Journey

00:03:34
Speaker
The airbags in the other vehicle did not deploy either. So, anyway, I tend to drive with my seat pretty far forward.
00:03:44
Speaker
And I impacted the steering wheel, even though I was wearing my safety belt. This impact fractured my sternum. I believe I may have also stressed my right leg a little bit from trying to break, so hard too, but that's a minor thing. Thanks beat all the powers that exist. Laura sustained no injuries. She was shaken up, of course, and in some amount of emotional shock, but that's it.
00:04:13
Speaker
The driver of the other car was not injured, although the passenger in it said she hit the side door and was very sore. They both were apparently wearing their seatbelts as well. I don't know if you have ever had a fractured sternum before, but friend, if you have not, try to avoid it. I've had a lot of injuries in my life, broken hip, broken toe, broken finger, broken wrist, three broken ribs all at the same time.
00:04:42
Speaker
And I've experienced for the most painful things a man can experience, passing a kidney stone. But I can tell you with certainty, none of these compared to the pain of a fractured sternum. If I try to do anything, anything at all, it involves the muscles of my abdomen, my chest, my stomach, my sternum protests loudly and vehemently. That means coughing,
00:05:11
Speaker
breathing deeply, sneezing, clearing my throat, putting on a shirt, reaching out or up for anything, brushing my teeth, lifting anything over a couple of pounds, going to the bathroom. All of this involves either directly or indirectly the muscles attached to the chest and ribs and therefore the sternum. Anyway, I spent the night in a hospital under observation.
00:05:40
Speaker
because of the chest impact and all that, and came home Monday, very sore and chastened. I feel physically like crap and I also feel a good deal of guilt over what I feel is my fault for the accident. That's going to take a good bit of tapping to get through that, I think. I had to cancel client appointments for the entire week because, honestly,
00:06:07
Speaker
I don't do as well helping others when my mind is distracted by my own pain. That's just the way it is. But I will be back in the saddle again soon. And that's why I'm posting this short message to my listeners. I will also return as soon as possible to podcasting Inshallah. I love that phrase, Inshallah. I learned it when I went to Jordan to do some consulting work there and it means if God wills it or if it is the will of God.
00:06:39
Speaker
As soon as possible, inshallah, I will get back to doing what I feel is my calling, helping others and educating them about the power and possibilities of holistic healing work and living in a healthy and holistic way. And of course, I am not able to do anything in the way of construction on our house right now.
00:07:02
Speaker
So that means no more climbing up ladders, no more driving nails, no more installing sheets of plywood, no more using a drill or much of anything for a while.

Seeking Support and Healing Techniques

00:07:14
Speaker
Anyway, if you are a person who believes in the power of prayer, I would really appreciate your prayers for my recovery and especially for the occupants of the vehicle I struck.
00:07:27
Speaker
If you are an energy worker, hey, I am always receptive to any healing energy you can send my way. And if you are neither of these and maybe even doubt the power or prayer, I still appreciate your positive and encouraging thoughts. If you want to leave a uplifting and encouraging message on this podcast, that would be great. I would really love to hear from you.
00:07:55
Speaker
And for those of you who may be wondering, yes, I am giving myself Reiki all the time. And my wife, who is an RN and a Reiki practitioner, is also giving me Reiki. I am also using tuning forks to make sound therapy to speed the healing of the bone in my fractured sternum. But more help, like I say, is always welcome.

Closing Blessings

00:08:19
Speaker
Until next time, may your days be blessed. May you always have enough
00:08:26

and may peace fill your heart and your home. Namaste.
