Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Oh, yeah.
00:00:51
Rodney Gooden
Nice to be back in the Champions League and nice to be back to winning ways in the Champions League as well.
00:00:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh yeah
00:00:56
Rodney Gooden
So nice little return to form.
00:00:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah, you could not have put that spot

Tactical Breakdown and Listener Engagement

00:01:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
on. As in this episode, we will be discussing our 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao from our super subs.
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll be discussing positions, tactics, what worked well and what could have gone better in that game. But as always, if you want to get involved with any of the topics discussed, please do get en involved through our social media, which can be found the in our show notes in the description. Right, Rodney, I've pretty much set the standard there. 2-0 win for Arsenal.
00:01:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And fair to say... Uh-oh. Sorry, I

Emotional Reactions and Game Frustrations

00:01:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
have... Sorry, I have the... I have ah Palace Millwall on in the background and I've just seen Millwall have just equalised over...
00:01:46
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, forgive us guys. Jamie's got a multitask for this one. There we go.
00:01:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
hearing a um Look, i just want i just won i just want somewhere I just want something where I'm happy. Well, OK, I actually said to my girlfriend that I wasn't happy with the Arsenal game.
00:02:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
that was before what That was before the opening goal. um And then now I've just seen that Millwall have just equalised from a corner. Oh, yikes. Okay.
00:02:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yikes. But anyway, right. Let's hope let's hope that my girlfriend's going to be happy because i'm i'm I'm happy with the result.
00:02:21
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, pray for Jamie.
00:02:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
But let's hope she'll be happy as well.
00:02:22
Rodney Gooden
It's a bad night when Arsenal win and Palace lose in that household. Oh, dear. ah
00:02:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, dear.
00:02:29
Rodney Gooden
Your team already took their best player, yeah? And now look. Hmm.
00:02:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Honestly, honestly, I can't believe it. Oh, my gosh. But um yeah, going back to what we were talking about, brilliant 2-0 win. I mean, it did take a bit of time, though, to get to get going.
00:02:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let alone, actually, before before we even go on, Rodney forgot that we were even kicking off at quarter to six.
00:02:49
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, yeah.
00:02:57
Rodney Gooden
Shameful behavior, I know. I know, I'm sorry.
00:02:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then again, who am I to talk?
00:02:59
Rodney Gooden
I'm sorry, people.
00:03:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who am I to talk? Because I was at training and I actually missed the first time. But... going on Going from what I was reading up and from what I had seen in the half-time analysis, it seemed like we didn't really hit the ground running.
00:03:19
Rodney Gooden
No, looked like we had a bit of a slow kind of stilted start as well. A few chances were created, but I'm lucky to kind of get on the end of things too. I saw before, Jokora's missed a couple too. couple balls in the air as well. Couldn't kind of make that happen.
00:03:31
Rodney Gooden
And I heard that we were getting stifled for a lot of that first half.
00:03:36
Rodney Gooden
For those of you that can't see the video, JB is losing his mind. I'm guessing that's Millwall too. Palace nil. Oh my Lord.
00:03:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it's not. Mateta had a chance, a brilliant chance to put Palace ahead in stoppage time.
00:03:49
Rodney Gooden
Oh, did he?
00:03:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, he ah I mean, he has slipped, but he had to tap all he had to do was tap it into an empty net.
00:04:02
Rodney Gooden
Wow.
00:04:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, brilliant work there. And, oh, right.
00:04:08
Rodney Gooden
Looks like it's an unlucky day for strikers and their chances. Because I said, back to Victor.
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:12
Rodney Gooden
Victor missed a couple today, although i generally think that he did have a decent game as well. ah But that first half wasn't looking as crispy as it really could have been. i think a lot of chances weren't really working out for Arsenal too.
00:04:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:04:23
Rodney Gooden
We looked a bit stilted, looked a bit slow, weren't really our kind of best usual selves as well.

Impact of Second-Half Substitutions

00:04:28
Rodney Gooden
It really took the second half and convincingly some of the substitutions Mikel made in the 72nd minute to really kind of bring the game to life.
00:04:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:35
Rodney Gooden
But there were still some standout performances from some players.
00:04:38
Rodney Gooden
I thought Calafiore, this game looks fantastic defensively. i thought Timber, Curian Timber, what a player.
00:04:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:43
Rodney Gooden
Still one of my favorite signings over the last couple of years. This man was incredible. From the defensive display to the off offensive one as well.
00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know what? i
00:04:50
Rodney Gooden
Did you see some of link-up? Him dribbling up into that midfield as well, linking up with Noni too.
00:04:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:54
Rodney Gooden
Unbelievable.
00:04:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know.
00:04:56
Rodney Gooden
What a player.
00:04:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, the only concern I had when when I see Timber running forward was, oh my gosh, if he gets dispossessed, like, what are we going to be doing?
00:05:03
Rodney Gooden
Yeah.
00:05:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the cover, I mean, Mosquera, oh my gosh, Mosquera.
00:05:08
Rodney Gooden
Yeah. Mascara. Every time I see the kid play, I'm looking at a $30 million price tag and I'm thinking, are we criminals?
00:05:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:17
Rodney Gooden
Because it seems like we robbed Valencia.
00:05:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:05:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh
00:05:22
Rodney Gooden
Seems like we robbed them.
00:05:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Honestly, I mean, I sat there and just, do you know what?
00:05:23
Rodney Gooden
Oh my word.
00:05:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, like normally when you see someone out of position, right, you might start to panic a little bit. But I just sat there and was like, oh my gosh, Mosquera is just there to protect.
00:05:38
Rodney Gooden
Yeah.
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's there to cover where it's where it's needed.
00:05:41
Rodney Gooden
Yeah.
00:05:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think... It might be weird saying this, but maybe Arsenal could maybe transition a little bit attacking-wise with maybe a ah four.
00:05:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, going as like three at the back kind of thing and maybe having like your you Timbers and your Califuris maybe going a little bit, you know, a little bit forward than normal.
00:06:02
Rodney Gooden
yeah I see that, but I also feel like it's different personnel and different skill sets too.

Squad Depth and Recruitment Success

00:06:09
Rodney Gooden
One thing which I think really stood out about this game and what ultimately going on to help us win that game was look at the depth we have in this squad.
00:06:15
Rodney Gooden
Look at the options and creativity that Mikel has as well.
00:06:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh my gosh
00:06:18
Rodney Gooden
Learning to go, all right... Plan A isn't really working and then learning when and where to make those substitutions, looking at the players that you have, looking at the depth on that team roster, seeing the skill sets, characteristics and qualities and being able to kind of choose that, having that freedom and flexibility.
00:06:32
Rodney Gooden
It is a far cry from what we experienced last season with a thin squad plagued by injuries into the Champions League.
00:06:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:06:38
Rodney Gooden
And we did well given that. But this one was a real masterclass and a real kind of props to Andrea Berta, the recruiting team, Arteta as well, and everyone who was ah involved in making those deals over this summer transfer window happen because we've now got the depth to be able to change our tactics, change our strategy, and make sure the injuries will not derail our campaign.
00:06:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:06:55
Rodney Gooden
And it was amazing. I thought Eberichi Eze, you know, wonderful wonderful creativity this game, but unfortunately on that left-hand side, you know, it doesn't seem to be working. Not in general, but for that game, you know, he wasn't really kind of coming into the game the way he should have done.
00:07:08
Rodney Gooden
But being able to make that transition and bring on Martinelli, who traditionally in the course of this season, you know, and over parts of last, hasn't been performing, you know, being able to see that the game was getting stretched and we needed some pace running in behind as well and realizing that that is Martinelli's game in a nutshell, being able to make that substitution and then looking at how quickly that transpired.
00:07:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:07:28
Rodney Gooden
30 seconds into coming on? Yeah, look.
00:07:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know.
00:07:30
Rodney Gooden
Ha ha ha.
00:07:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
well I mean, I have, i I mean, I don't know how many times I've said this on previous podcasts, but Eze needs to be played as a 10. He needs to be played as a 10. I've said this for so long and I just see, i just, ah honestly think we could have, we could have, I don't think we could have experimented as much, but I think I would have maybe, I wouldn't, I wouldn't have hurt to put maybe Eze in that 10 role, but then you know, you could have maybe put Martinelli on the left, but then I don't know if he would have been as of for as as effective and and everything else in between.
00:08:07
Rodney Gooden
Yeah.
00:08:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So at the end of the day, I

Substitution Decisions and Player Challenges

00:08:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
mean, it was ah it was a it was a gamble. And I mean, i want to see... And I think tonight, do you know what it is as well? a lot of people... I mean, I was disappointed because I even said to my girlfriend, I'm not happy with Arteta.
00:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And she was like, why? And I was like, because... You know, your you've taken Eze off. Fair enough, he didn't have the best of games on the left because it was all happening on the right with Noni Madweke.
00:08:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I would have just liked to have seen him in that cam role.
00:08:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah and And also, I don't know if you've seen on social media, there's a photo circulating of Eze's face.
00:08:39
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, it's an interesting one.
00:08:40
Rodney Gooden
Like, I think...
00:08:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's to kind of say, like, he's like he's far from happy. Far from happy.
00:08:56
Rodney Gooden
Hmm. Far from happy in general or far from happy with that performance as well?
00:08:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think far from... I'm kind of gathering it was far from happy with get with that game alone.
00:09:04
Rodney Gooden
Hmm. Hmm.
00:09:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
But again, i think you've i think people have got to understand with Eze, though, it's his first Champions League game. You know, it's going to be a lot different. A lot different to what you know what it is compared to the Premier League and the FA Cup and the Carabao and so on.
00:09:20
Rodney Gooden
of course and i i do lend credence to the argument that he's in a slightly unfamiliar position as well you know he's much more comfortable in that left-sided 10 role you see that he's a very progressive dribbler he wants to cut inside you know is he going to be a touchline winger and is he going to be able to operate effectively as such it will require some tweaks to his game i generally do feel that yeah with a proper overlap and left back.
00:09:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think...
00:09:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:39
Rodney Gooden
And that's why when we get to the last part that game, the six minutes that i saw from Hincapié for that little debut, I did see some promise. I do feel that the Eze left wing experiment can work with someone who will hug the touchline, give him that width and allow him to cut inside, maybe play that final pass, maybe cut in and shoot.
00:09:55
Rodney Gooden
But I felt that in this game, didn't really kind of work out and agreed. We saw a lot of our attacks this game going through the right-hand side. And let's take a minute to talk about that.
00:10:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:03
Rodney Gooden
Let's talk about Nani Madiweke because, wow, what a player. Ha ha! Every game I see him, he's getting better and better.
00:10:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know what?
00:10:09
Rodney Gooden
But it was alarming to see that our right-sided bias still seems to be a bit of an issue right now.
00:10:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:14
Rodney Gooden
It's effective, but we need the left side to be working in tandem as well, which why was happy with, well, the kind of substitution made at that 72nd minute with Leo coming in, with get Martinelli coming in.
00:10:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
We do.
00:10:24
Rodney Gooden
That was fantastic. But Madaweke, wow, what game as well.
00:10:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean... He is just... He goes from strength to strength.
00:10:34
Rodney Gooden
Hmm.
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know And you know what? Honestly, for any for any Arsenal fan that signed that petition to cancel, to honestly cancel the the transfer of Madweke, I hope you are sitting there...
00:10:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
with... I don't even know at this point, but I hope you're eating every bit of your words right now. Every letter.
00:10:59
Rodney Gooden
Some of them are. Have you seen? that Some of them are doing up apologies as well.
00:11:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've seen one video... I've seen one video where

Impact Players: Martinelli and Trossard

00:11:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I've seen like a video apologising to Martinelli now because I was watching something on my TikTok earlier on and there's these is these and this guy called Razor online um and he watch sits there and watches Arsenal games with his dad.
00:11:19
Rodney Gooden
Hmm.
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And when Martinelli came on, they were like ah like, the dad was like, oh, why is he coming on? Why is he coming on? Da-da-da-da-da. Then all of a sudden, boom, within like seconds, Martinelli goes and scores.
00:11:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's just straight away, straight away. He's like, I'm so sorry, Martinelli. I'm so sorry. Dad, dad, apologize to apologize to Martinelli, man.
00:11:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And all this, that and the other. And it's just too funny.
00:11:55
Rodney Gooden
Wow.
00:11:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's too funny. Oh, get in. Good save. Um,
00:12:00
Rodney Gooden
It's an interesting one with Martinelli because I think his effectiveness in this game was due to the way in which he was employed as well. You'd had Eze running at those defenders for the past 70 minutes as well.
00:12:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:12:11
Rodney Gooden
They're getting tired. They kind of know what to expect as well. The game's slowly becoming a bit more stretched out as well. You've got a tired win back as well who then has to deal with a fresh Martinelli who then is going to do exactly what he does and run into space.
00:12:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:23
Rodney Gooden
you know That is Martinelli's A game in a nutshell. Wonderful flick on from Trossard. And then you've got Martinelli running into pace as well.
00:12:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:12:30
Rodney Gooden
Amazing flick to control that and put that in front of him as well. I thought that touch was majestic.
00:12:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know what? That's exactly what I was thinking as well. Because some you know if that was if that was the Martinelli that we might have seen maybe at the start of the season, could have been one of them where, you know, one touch and it could have gone incredibly wrong.
00:12:48
Rodney Gooden
yeah ah could have
00:12:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
One touch and that could have gone completely could have gotten completely different.
00:12:53
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, it could have. It could have. But I generally do feel like, while I understand the Martinelli doubters too, I feel props to McHale for employing him in this position. Props to Martinelli as well for proving some of the doubters wrong.
00:13:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:13:04
Rodney Gooden
I do feel that some of the weaknesses in this game still need some tightening up. Looking at the goal as well, I thought the touch was majestic. Love Trosso for picking out as well.
00:13:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:12
Rodney Gooden
I do feel the finish. We got a little lucky there because upon replay, I felt that the weakest part of the entire goal was the finish.
00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I agree.
00:13:21
Rodney Gooden
Fortunately for us, it went underneath Unai Suman and I thought he really should have done better to sort of save that. We're lucky that he didn't, and I'm happy that he didn't. But I thought with Gabi, yeah, it would be nice if he could look up, see the goalkeeper's positioning, and and place it on the other side of him, let him go full stretch as well, and put that in the bottom corner of the opposite side to where the keeper is.
00:13:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:40
Rodney Gooden
Then it would have been a staunch finish, an absolute goal as well. We got a bit lucky there, but i think on another day, that wonderful transition ends up with a saved goal.
00:13:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:13:48
Rodney Gooden
but But fortunately, we didn't.
00:13:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:13:50
Rodney Gooden
And if that gives Gabi some confidence to tweak in his game and improve going into the rest of the season, I'm happy. We love to see it.
00:13:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Definitely. And you know what? Speaking of Gabriel Martinelli, because again, the touch like you said, the touch was brilliant.
00:14:03
Rodney Gooden
Yeah.
00:14:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely brilliant. You know, and the control, the fact that he was able to somehow still have control of the ball was unbelievably good. Really, really good.
00:14:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
The question I want to put forward to you, though, is now that Martinelli has got a goal, Will we potentially see a bit more confidence in him now?
00:14:27
Rodney Gooden
I mean, he is a confidence player, you know, and I definitely do feel that you can tell.
00:14:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:31
Rodney Gooden
Martinelli with low confidence is very different from the 2022-23 season where he was full of confidence, 15 goals that season, absolutely incredible. I do love this because I do feel that if the confidence helps improve his performances, I would love to see him reintegrated into the team. I would love to see him used, you know, in an effective manner.
00:14:47
Rodney Gooden
However, I do feel that with some of the weaknesses in his game, he needs to develop those walking those in training. Or we'll get used to seeing Martinelli used in this context, which is very similar to how Trossard was used as well today.
00:14:57
Rodney Gooden
This is a super sub special, which means that I'm looking at both Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
00:14:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:02
Rodney Gooden
And I'm thinking these are brilliant players with wonderful elements to their game, but they're coming on more as impact players to sort of change the game when the game is already kind of going one way. I feel that with Martinelli, sometimes when he starts, he gets sussed out quite a bit by a lot of defenders.
00:15:14
Rodney Gooden
He gets sussed out quite a bit here and there. But usually in that last kind of 20, 30 minutes as well, running at tied defenders as well, quickly switching to a break in transition, absolutely wonderful aspects to his game. If we utilize him in that format going forward, then I go, yeah, he could have bags of confidence and hopefully bags of late goals. We'll see.
00:15:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, definitely. I think for me, I could ah can see this being a start. I can see this being a good start. But still, at the minute, right now, I still see Eze starting ah ahead of Martinelli.
00:15:46
Rodney Gooden
Yeah.
00:15:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I still see that.
00:15:48
Rodney Gooden
Especially with Calafiori and Hinkappie potentially in that overlapping left-back role as well, giving that width too.
00:15:53
Rodney Gooden
I think the creativity that Eze provides as well, you know, the ability to pick out that perfect pass, link up play, and of course also still stay dangerous with his disposition to kind of be direct, you know, almost direct.
00:16:04
Rodney Gooden
It doesn't matter what he at times and looking for those shots. I think wonderful.
00:16:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:16:07
Rodney Gooden
You know, really, really, really could be useful. And then, of course, maybe 70 minutes, you know, you're seeing what's going on, seeing how the game's reading. If it's not working, you've got a wonderful option in someone who's much better at traditional balls running into space.
00:16:18
Rodney Gooden
And yeah, with Martinelli. So again, this is props to the depth that we now have in the squad.
00:16:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:22
Rodney Gooden
We have options, Jamie, and it feels very good. Hmm. Hmm.
00:16:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can't tell you, I honestly cannot tell you how good that feels to have options and and ah and an actual depth.
00:16:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because when you look at an Arsenal bench now, I look at the Arsenal bench and I'm like, wow, look at the quality you can bring on, you know.
00:16:39
Rodney Gooden
Mmm. Mmm.
00:16:44
Rodney Gooden
Mmm.
00:16:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we'll we'll talk a little bit more about that. We're going to take it we're going to go to an ad break at the minute. And then when we come back, we're going to talk a bit more about Arsenal's debt. And we're going to talk about that second goal from Leandro Trossard.
00:17:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, know why this always does.
00:17:43
Rodney Gooden
Every time.
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why does this always happen?
00:17:46
Rodney Gooden
That's what I said.
00:17:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
i haven't got this on a loop.
00:17:48
Rodney Gooden
cross
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I promise you I haven't got this on a loop. But welcome back. Welcome back to the second part of our ah Champions League review as Arsenal win 2-0 against Athletic Bilbao.
00:18:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, let's talk about that second goal from Leandro Trossard. I mean...
00:18:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
but I mean, we i we spoke about confidence with Martinelli.
00:18:14
Rodney Gooden
Mm-hmm.
00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it seemed like once he got his goal, he kind of really clicked into gear, didn't he?
00:18:21
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, he did. And again, it was really at work for that second goal as well. Running down to the touchline, picking up that pass for Leandro as well. And then again, one of the aspects of Leo's game that I absolutely adore is always his ability to disguise or fake the shot.
00:18:34
Rodney Gooden
It's kind of one of them ones where I really do look at both of them as a player and I wish they could sort of learn from each other or if I could combine them both into one player. Martinelli's transitional ability and pace along with Trossard's footballing IQ and ability to fake out and disguise that next action would be a wonderful winger.
00:18:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
a Oh my goodness.
00:18:50
Rodney Gooden
And amazingly, yeah when they both combine on the pitch, you see the magic that happens.
00:18:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:55
Rodney Gooden
And Chossard taking his time just to place that shot. A bit lucky with that deflection. But again, you can see if he'd shot that first time, would have been blocked immediately. But faking it out just a little bit to kind of draw those defenders in and place it.
00:19:06
Rodney Gooden
Wonderful work. it's the kind of thing I've come to expect from Leo when he's found himself with the ball in the box in a wonderful position. But yeah, wonderful. Love to see the subs combining. Again, as we said, super sub special.
00:19:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Honestly, honestly, it was, like you said, it was just so good to see two wingers, two wingers who, let's be honest, probably won't feature as much for Arsenal this season.
00:19:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
They'll probably feature in certain games, but I don't see them featuring as much compared to so previous previous seasons.
00:19:33
Rodney Gooden
Mmm.
00:19:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you get where I'm coming from?
00:19:40
Rodney Gooden
Mmm. Mmm. Of course, yeah.
00:19:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's refreshing, though, and I think it's quite good to see that with that depth we've got on the bench, to see Martinelli come on. And you know what? Even with Trossard, I actually thought, you know what?
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
If... if true I mean, Trossard, the fact that he was able to take another touch of the ball was honestly something else.
00:20:02
Rodney Gooden
Mmm.
00:20:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because I sat there and thought, wow. You know, you took a touch. You know, to get a touch and your shot off, which, yes, ah of course it was deflected. But...
00:20:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Pretty good strike though, wasn't it?
00:20:18
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, yeah. And like I said, this is kind of you've come to expect from Leo as well. a Leo can dummy, Leo can fake as well. He's quite efficient with his touches in the in the opponent's box. And I think, yeah, he was just kind of putting himself in a position, Martin Elliott did well to pick him out, to find himself in a position where Leo can be most dangerous. And that is it.
00:20:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolute.
00:20:34
Rodney Gooden
Wonderful work.
00:20:35
Rodney Gooden
And I was happy to kind of make it 2-0 at that point. At that point, yeah, you saw the rest of the substitutions, you know, later coming on, Hincapier coming on, Christian Norgard coming on, taking Madaweke off as well. You can see the changes there were just to see the game out too.
00:20:46
Rodney Gooden
But it was nice to kind of come bring that to a close and see Piero Hincapier have his professional

Debut Performance and Tactical Experimentation

00:20:52
Rodney Gooden
debut. And what I saw in those six minutes was impressive. Jamie, what do you think?
00:20:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, wow. I mean, the fact that we've got him on loan with the obligation to buy.
00:21:01
Rodney Gooden
Hmm.
00:21:03
Rodney Gooden
Hmm.
00:21:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, my goodness. If this is what we're going you know, we we spoke so heavily about last season. We spoke so heavily about our left side k needing ah bit of a tweak.
00:21:13
Rodney Gooden
Yeah.
00:21:16
Rodney Gooden
Yeah.
00:21:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm telling you this now, Hincapié. This is why I was i wanted Hincapié to feature and in this game because of moments like that.
00:21:24
Rodney Gooden
Yeah.
00:21:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
The runs. Me and you speak so heavily about overlapping runs because we we love to see it.
00:21:31
Rodney Gooden
yeah
00:21:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there was, I'm sure you mentioned it off air, there was one moment, there was um one or two moments where Hincapié just made the overlapping run. And I'm like, hold on a minute.
00:21:42
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, he was so far advanced at the pitch, hugging the top touch line, allowing the wingers and the inside players that additional depth as well. And then would still make that backtracking run to come in there and defend in our half as well, if needed be.
00:21:53
Rodney Gooden
He's got bags of stamina, very strong, looked aggressive, well-timed with his tackles too. It was only a small display for six minutes, but I was confident, ah very happy.
00:21:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:02
Rodney Gooden
but I also feel that he's similar to Moscair in the fact that if he did start and play the full 90, I feel the fans and us would be very impressed by what we see. But I like the fact that we're baby-stepping him in, making sure the fitness is there, getting him well acquainted with the system, other players, forming those relationships.
00:22:17
Rodney Gooden
And yeah, hopefully of another boon to our squad going into the rest of the season.
00:22:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Definitely. you know what I really have enjoyed so far? I know like it's still quite early days in the season, but I just love how our players, our new signings are just slowly integrating into the squad now.
00:22:37
Rodney Gooden
well quickly in Mascara's case but yeah
00:22:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. ah Yeah. For Mascara. And mean again I mean, mean, kind of touched on it earlier on, but Mascara again just brings such calmness on the ball, doesn't he?
00:22:52
Rodney Gooden
yeah yeah
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, i can't think of a time where... i don't even think any of us can think of a time where, say, Saliba's got injured and, you know, whoever's back up to Saliba has come in and we're sitting there thinking, you know what, we're we're in good hands here.
00:23:14
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, yeah. Hasn't been the case for a while.
00:23:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, who really hasn't?
00:23:17
Rodney Gooden
and i' mean Have we ever? Because I still remember the 2022-23 season where Saliba had the back injury and then we had to bring Rob Holding and then, yeah, you know what happened there?
00:23:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh,
00:23:26
Rodney Gooden
um Wonderful player, but in terms of you know the levels there, yeah, it was true. There was a bit of a gap. There was a weakness. There was a drop-off there. But now, I think there still is.
00:23:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah.
00:23:34
Rodney Gooden
But I think similar to what I was saying with Saka and Madaweke as well, you know you've got a much smaller drop-off in quality and abilities and traits there, which mean that you don't have to worry too much about rotating.
00:23:44
Rodney Gooden
There's not a stark difference between your choice number one or your choice A and choice B. And so, yeah, this is it.
00:23:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:50
Rodney Gooden
This is what we need. You need a full squad of maybe two starting 11s that can compete, meaning that, yeah, we can suffer the injuries. We can suffer people missing in the squad. We can suffer rotations and we have options to go in there and see out a game, go out there and chase a goal, win a game as well.
00:24:04
Rodney Gooden
We've got many, many options and it's very encouraging to see.
00:24:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. um My question for you is, with Hincapié, who we we were both very impressed with his performance tonight, would you would you start him next week at Port Vale?
00:24:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't want to think um don't want to think um don't want to think ah ahead to this weekend because it's Man City this weekend and, you know, we will go pretty much full strength here.
00:24:24
Rodney Gooden
I bought Vale. Oh.
00:24:31
Rodney Gooden
Yeah.
00:24:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
But after that Man City game, would you maybe think, oh, do I start at Hincapié? Do I maybe give Hincapié a bit more time?
00:24:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, maybe give him half an hour out there on the field. what What would you do?
00:24:47
Rodney Gooden
Hmm.
00:24:52
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, I think if it' if it were up to me, I would rotate Calafiore in the latter stages of the Man City game. See if he can handle some of the advanced pressure with like a big kind of match in Premier League as well.
00:25:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:25:04
Rodney Gooden
Maybe let him play a bit longer than he played tonight. And if both players are still fit, I think, yeah, I probably would start in Capier against Port Veyrte as well. I'd have a heavily rotated squad there. Allow some of the usual first 11 to kind of rest a bit and bring on some of the other players as well. the The more backup kind of reserve players to come in there again.
00:25:19
Rodney Gooden
play, get familiar with one another, you know, improve that match fitness. And then, yeah, I think you've got kind of utilize the depth from that squad to bring players up to speed and get as many of those players who aren't used to playing 90 minutes, you know, playing those 90 minutes.
00:25:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:32
Rodney Gooden
That's it.
00:25:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, one thing, um now speaking of obviously like our depth, right? There's something that really bugged me and I really want to get your opinions on this.
00:25:42
Rodney Gooden
Hmm.
00:25:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's to do with what was said on commentary tonight by
00:25:46
Rodney Gooden
Hmm.
00:25:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
um by by Fletcher.
00:25:50
Rodney Gooden
Hmm.
00:25:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he said with hincapié about being fourth choice. do you Do you really see him being fourth choice? Because... I get we've got depth, but I was a bit like, whoa, fourth choice?
00:26:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know.
00:26:07
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, I think that's unfair because because if you think about it, he's going to be either playing two positions.
00:26:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a bit harsh.
00:26:13
Rodney Gooden
He's going to be playing centre-back as a left-footed centre-back, so deputy to Gabriel, or he's going to be playing left-back he's competing with Calafiore.
00:26:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:20
Rodney Gooden
I think in no circumstances he fourth choice. I think he's quite clearly your second choice right now, as it is. Performances further down the line could make him first choice, but he's got the potential to play two positions.
00:26:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:31
Rodney Gooden
And at that point, he's second in the pecking order for both of them. You know, if you want to add those together and then say that he's fourth choice, fair enough. But I disagree.
00:26:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let me stop you there because you said Hincapié being second choice. What about Myles Lewis Skelly, though? Hmm.
00:26:46
Rodney Gooden
Well, the thing is, the vision I have for Myles is I want to see him playing his original position. I want to see him more advanced and playing in that midfield. So the Nkappé signing, if he is predominantly going to rotate with Calafiore, then it allows Myles to come in there and potentially play that left-sided eight, you know, kind of rotate with Declan.
00:27:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:02
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, I think I'd very much like to see that. Because when I look at Declan Rice, you're thinking about the games he plays in international duty. You're thinking about the games he plays in an Arsenal shirt as well. He is going to be heavily utilized this season because he's one of our greatest players.
00:27:13
Rodney Gooden
Absolutely. But you don't want to overuse them.
00:27:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:15
Rodney Gooden
You saw what happened to Saka with the hamstrings last season.
00:27:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:18
Rodney Gooden
no We don't want something similar to happen to Rice because believe it, best believe that boy runs
00:27:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
He does.
00:27:24
Rodney Gooden
ah
00:27:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really does.
00:27:25
Rodney Gooden
That boy it covers a lot of ground and gets into some serious tackles every game.
00:27:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
He is an absolute powerhouse.
00:27:29
Rodney Gooden
So you want to be able to rotate Declan and make sure that, OK, if we can't bring him there and we want to have a left side at eight, Miles with the dribbling, with the carrying ability as well. Could he potentially be the rotational option there?
00:27:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:39
Rodney Gooden
You know, this says we know he used to play in the midfield for Haylen. Could we see him at six? Could we see him at eight? I think it'll be nice to see him be another rotational option at midfield.
00:27:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, definitely. I think we would, before we go to a break, actually, would you, would you actually play him in, in midfield for Port Vale?
00:27:58
Rodney Gooden
Ooh, to experiment and play.
00:27:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:00
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, absolutely. I think against, yeah, in those types of games, I think you're allowed to have some experimentation because you're probably not going to get penalized too much. And you also know that with the depth that you have on the bench too, if you try and experiment, a tactical experiment, and it doesn't work out, you can, of course, make those changes and go chase the game if it does get to that point.
00:28:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:16
Rodney Gooden
So, yeah, I think in some of those games too, i would like to see some more experimentation. I would like to see Mikel play with more, you know, a variety of different combinations because when the season gets tough and we need to have a tried and tested method that we know utilizes, can be utilized well and works effectively, this is the time to experiment and play around with it.
00:28:33
Rodney Gooden
Play around with it in training, see if it works out in an actual game and then we have that as a weapon in our arsenal, you know, in the future.
00:28:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, no, absolutely.
00:28:39
Rodney Gooden
and
00:28:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
You are absolutely spot on there. Absolutely spot on. we' We'll take another quick break. And when we come back, I just want to kind of focus. weve we've We've spoken so positively about Arsenal this evening, but kind of want focus on the weak points here. Because overall, especially in that first half, from what I'd seen, you know,
00:29:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bilbao did have a few chances, so we will discuss them after this break.
00:29:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And welcome back. I had to pause for a minute cause i wasn't sure if the hand was going to replay itself again.
00:29:52
Rodney Gooden
Hmm.
00:29:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
But welcome back to this third and final part of the Champions League, of our Champions League opening game.

First-Half Performance Analysis

00:30:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Rodney, all good here talking about the strengths and the positives and there were a lot to take from that.
00:30:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But let's have a look at our weaknesses because in that first half, we really, we did kind of struggle to get into gear, didn't we?
00:30:16
Rodney Gooden
Yeah. Yeah, yeah. there were some There were some alarm bells kind of ringing on a few of those points too. One of them was not being clinical enough in front of goal for when the chances did occur. I think there were a few opportunities that Victor had in the first and second half, which weren't deserving of being hooked, even though, to be fair, if you see what the substitution did come on to do, maybe you can validate that.
00:30:34
Rodney Gooden
Maybe you can justify it. But I felt that...
00:30:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:30:36
Rodney Gooden
He had a few few opportunities in front of goal, which he couldn't put away. One of them, there crossing to the box, the almost free header that went wide as well. I was so frustrated with that one too.
00:30:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah yeah.
00:30:45
Rodney Gooden
I understand it's a difficult one to do, but he pretty much left his man in the dust, had the opportunity, pretty much almost a free header, and then turns it wide. Frustrating, but we know that aerial ability is not Jokeres' major strength.
00:30:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Strong point, yeah.
00:30:58
Rodney Gooden
But hopefully you think that, yeah, in training, we can work on that. We can develop that because you know what a side we are when it comes to set pieces. You know what we can do with long balls over the top.
00:31:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:07
Rodney Gooden
but
00:31:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah, definitely.
00:31:08
Rodney Gooden
Whipped crosses into the box. You know we need another target, man. You know, so that was a bit frustrating. That was one weakness of game too. This is an interesting one because I felt that Madaweke did this towards the end of the match, but I felt that there were several moments in that game where he was almost too direct.
00:31:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
on.
00:31:24
Rodney Gooden
I love to see it. I love to see a goal-minded winner, but there was one opportunity where I do feel that he converted that into a shot, which ultimately drew the save from Unai Simon, where was thinking maybe crossing that back or cutting that back and then waiting for kind of play to advance, and then playing that path might have been a better move.
00:31:39
Rodney Gooden
He started to do that towards the end of the game, but I do feel that when you see Saka play as well, you do get a few, you know, you get a little bit better decision-making.
00:31:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:31:47
Rodney Gooden
Obviously, he's also direct, just like Noni too, but if it's not going to work out, he's able to quickly adjust, scan, read the kind of state of play, and then, of course, change his last action to something more effective as well. I'm looking to see Noni develop that, and he was good in that game too, but I'd like to see a little bit more from that from Noni going into the future.
00:32:03
Rodney Gooden
But defensively, Jamie, I mean, what did you think? Because I thought we lost possession quite a bit in midfield and there was one heart-of-my-mouth moment where Zuby, Zuby, Zuby, Zuby got his pockets picked.
00:32:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:32:14
Rodney Gooden
It was tough to watch.
00:32:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, that was, for me, that was a very big highlight there. Seeing Zuby getting pickpocketed, I thought, oh, he's like, he's like, last line of defence before you then get to the defenders, do you know I mean
00:32:21
Rodney Gooden
Yeah. Hmm.
00:32:32
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, yeah. And looking back on it, it should have been a goal, really.
00:32:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I was like, yeah.
00:32:35
Rodney Gooden
Like, if you watch that back, we did well to stifle the shot and cause Inaki to kind of, like, hesitate and then, yeah, ultimately make the wrong play.
00:32:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:32:42
Rodney Gooden
But had he crossed that first time across the corridor of uncertainty, did you see?
00:32:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. That might have not ended well.
00:32:49
Rodney Gooden
um let it go ahead of nine already. I thought if he'd passed that first time and we did well to kind of disguise the action, to put pressure on him, to cause him to hesitate. But if he'd hit that first time across the box, yeah, I think that would have been too
00:33:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that could have been very awkward because, you know, at the end of the day, it was one of them games for me where it was not comfortable. You know, a lot of people might sit there and think, oh, but, you know, 2-0, comfortable win.
00:33:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was far, even before the first goal went in, it was nowhere near comfortable that second half, was it?
00:33:18
Rodney Gooden
Yeah. Yeah. No, no, it wasn't. You know, we we made great, great inkling towards a positive result towards that second half as well. But you've got to think, you know, we had a few mistakes in that game too.
00:33:30
Rodney Gooden
And if we're not clinical enough, if we're not strong enough defensively, if we make mistakes that way, further on in this competition, that could be a absolute game changer and not in the way that we want. something to look out for something to keep an eye on too but we did well to kind of see out that one and I thought yeah again props to Mikel for the tactical changes being able to read the game that way and make the changes that ultimately led on to our victory but it is true there are some alarm bells there and again for i mean to you Jemmy I put it in there Zubimendi's fantastic player great lone six as well wonderful vision amazing passing range too physicality you've seen him get his pockets picked a couple times as well is it a strength issue can he be muscled off the ball too easily
00:33:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:33:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
He is.
00:34:09
Rodney Gooden
when he's isolated and exposed. What do you think?
00:34:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, I kind of, I get it. i get it in the sense it's the Champions League, but the thing is, Even in the Premier League, I think City's going to be you know Teams like City will be a good test.
00:34:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Liverpool was a good test for him as well. But...
00:34:27
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, but it happened with Van Dyke, you remember? ah
00:34:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:34:30
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, yeah, that's what I mean, the big guys, they can do it.
00:34:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And again, we look at you know we look at City coming up this weekend and you look at City's midfield and you're like...
00:34:35
Rodney Gooden
Yeah.
00:34:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
how is Zubimane going to be coping strength strength-wise against some of the midfielders? do you know what I mean?
00:34:45
Rodney Gooden
Yeah.
00:34:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think maybe that's something that Zubi will need to work on in his game a little bit.
00:34:50
Rodney Gooden
Yeah. When he's got time, and I think the technical aspects of his game can usually kind of overcome that specific weakness, but If he receives the ball in a bad position, you know, or he takes too much time on the ball or he doesn't see the other man coming, if that other player has a strength advantage, I think he is in a tough situation. And so at that point, you might think if we're running a double pivot, maybe there's a rice there to kind of cover as well. Maybe a bit more defensive security there.
00:35:11
Rodney Gooden
That might be ideal. But I think sometimes, yeah, if Zuby's not aware of the kind of man coming in and he's the lone six, there's a chance that, yeah, that can happen. Dispossessed, now it's an attack on goal in a transition.
00:35:22
Rodney Gooden
Fortunately, i think we've got a very solid back four behind Zuby.
00:35:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Agree.
00:35:26
Rodney Gooden
but
00:35:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. you know what?
00:35:27
Rodney Gooden
and most of the time we're alright and behind that back four we got an even better keeper so I said most of the time we'll be okay but again in the future that keeps happening there are stronger attacks that might punish us so we need to keep an eye on that
00:35:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think in a way.
00:35:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:35:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I also think as well, there'll be there'll be points in the season where, you know, teams might start targeting Zuby for his strength. You know, i mean, i said it in the Liverpool crossover. I said it would be a battle of of the left side because, you know, Arsenal's left side is not as strong.
00:35:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then it was the same for Liverpool. You know, when you've got the likes of Kerkhez on the left, it's like, well, that's where Arsenal are going to try and exploit. And I think... With Zuby, if teams start capitalise that, oh, actually, hold on a minute.
00:36:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Zuby's a great player. Let's not get that wrong.
00:36:10
Rodney Gooden
Of course.
00:36:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
But strength-wise, he might not be there. That's where we need to start targeting Zuby.
00:36:17
Rodney Gooden
Mm.
00:36:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because if we can't target the wings like we normally do and in compared to you know previous seasons, we need to start targeting different positions. And I think there could be a small point where maybe it does come to a point where they might they may start to target Zubi just for strength alone.
00:36:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And I think that would be interesting to see how that pans out.
00:36:43
Rodney Gooden
Yeah, no, it's a fair point as well. I think we can avoid that by making sure you maybe got potentially an extra man in the midfield, making sure that that pass comes to him in a favourable position as well. Making sure that, yeah, Zuby himself is scanning as well to make sure that you're not about to receive the ball under pressure from two two big forwards, two big lumbering forwards.
00:36:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Of
00:37:00
Rodney Gooden
But I feel like it's a bit difficult also to criticise Zuby too much because we saw something similar, i think, last season with Mateta and Odegaard as well.
00:37:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
course.
00:37:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:37:08
Rodney Gooden
and
00:37:09
Rodney Gooden
For the Palace 2-2 game as well, for that second Mateta goal as well, Odegaard bodied. And you go, that's not part of his game.
00:37:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bodies. Yeah.
00:37:16
Rodney Gooden
Receiving the ball in a tight space, Mateta's on your heels. Yeah, what do you expect? Yeah,
00:37:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's it, exactly.
00:37:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's be honest. Against Mateta, you are not... you There's no way you're bodying him.
00:37:21
Rodney Gooden
better
00:37:26
Rodney Gooden
yeah. yeah
00:37:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
that That's just impossible.
00:37:28
