Luis Diaz's Departure and Legacy

00:00:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, you are listening to the Daily Liverpool podcast on the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Louis Easton. Thank you very much for joining me. um And we've got plenty to talk about.
00:00:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Plenty has happened in the last 24 hours. Firstly, um we have sold Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich. I have got my Bayern Munich shirt on today in support of Luis Diaz for this move.
00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolute legend of Liverpool in his story time at the club. And this is, of course, the 1996 Mehmet Show. UEFA Cup final shirt. What a beautiful......no longer a Liverpool player...
00:01:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah no longer a liverpool player um Brilliant memories ah during his time at Liverpool. I'm thinking of that goal against Manchester United last season at Old Trafford.
00:01:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
In fact, there are many things you could talk talk about, my namely his song. I absolutely loved that song. He's Luis Diaz. He's from Barrancas and he plays for Liverpool in the tune of Bella Ciao, even though that is an Italian song. Weird how that happens, isn't it?

Liverpool's Transfer Plans Post-Diaz Sale

00:01:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, he's off to Bayern Munich. And what's supposed to happen now is we are going to inject that 75 million euro fee into our pursuit of Alexander Isak, the ah Newcastle striker. I've already done a podcast all about him. You can check it out out on our page.
00:02:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that's not the only thing that's happened in the last 24 hours. We have also hijacked a 17-year-old striker, Will Wright, from Salford City. Here's the story from Fabrizio Romano. Liverpool hopeful to complete hijack of 17-year-old striker Will Wright after Arsenal verbally agreed a deal two weeks ago.
00:02:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Salford City accepted the LFC bid as well as Dave Ockop reported. Liverpool now proceeding with formal steps on the player side to get it signed ASAP. And then, less than an hour later,
00:02:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
He completed the second part of that medical as Liverpool signed him.

Youth Development and New Signings

00:02:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Contracted until June 2028. That's a three-year deal. And here we go. And, you know, I'm not going to pretend I know anything about Will Wright.
00:03:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But the fact that we are putting so much into our youth, you know, alongside Riongamoja, Jadon Dans, Tyler Morton, Trenioni...
00:03:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
All of these players, Louis Kubas as well, Doak, Owen Beck, the list goes on. ah The fact that we are still putting so much into this youth just does show that not only do we have already have an a team and a B team, but we are also have a C team.
00:03:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because that under-21 side does look scary for the future. Rio and Gamora especially. You've seen how well he's been playing in pre-season. ah In that match against AC Milan. Setting up that Cody Gakpo goal.
00:03:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's just a very exciting time to be a Liverpool fan. It seems like we're doing business the right way at the moment. And it's crazy to think that three years ago everyone was screaming for FSG out.

FSG's Strategic Success and Spending

00:04:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not me. umm go I'm going to say here, I went against that crowd. i stood on that rock and said FSG in. And this is why, because we have seen this long term project fall into place now.
00:04:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have seen this team challenge for the Premier League numerous times over the last eight seasons or so since Jurgen Klopp came in and we sold Coutinho off, got Van Dijk in, got Alisson in, built that wonderful squad with Klopp.
00:04:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And challenged, got to three Champions League finals, finished one point off the league twice, won the league twice, won the Carabao Cup twice, FA Cup once. And now we've built this wonder team under Arnaslott, bearing in mind that we also won the league last season.
00:04:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
while we were rebuilding the squad. Now we've suddenly put all of this money into this new super team. but I'm going to read out our list of signings so far.
00:04:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Georgie Mamadashvili, Freddie Woodman, Armin Pesci, Jeremy Frimpong, Milos Kerkes, Ugo Eketike, Florian Wurtz, and now Will Wright and possibly Alexander Isak.
00:05:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not to mention we're also linked to Rodrigo and Mark Gay as well. And also with these players coming back from loan, we had Ben Doak, Stefan Bajetic, Calvin Ramsey, Rhys Williams, and um Harvey Davis as well. But he's gone back out on loan, as has Vitislav Jaros. And Nat Phillips has been sold off.
00:05:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've only sold four players, actually. Jarrell, Kwanza, Quivin, Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Nat Phillips. Well, Luis Diaz will be announced soon. But it's crazy ah that we've already spent all of this money and we haven't actually had the players going out to replace it.

Comparing Transfer Strategies

00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I understand that Chiesa and Nunez are supposed to be leaving, but i haven't seen any bids come in for Chiesa yet. And Nunez were sort of playing hardball with Napoli at the moment. So...
00:06:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm still not worried, by the way, because FSG have proven that they can run this club and they are very stubborn and they know what they're doing. So I know it's going to work out well, but it just sort of leads you to wonder.
00:06:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why on earth are Liverpool being so aggressive in this transfer window? Because this has not happened for a long, long time. i mean, the last time i remember Liverpool making loads of moves in one transfer window was when we replaced Luis Suarez.
00:06:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um... If you remember that season where we bought a bunch of players from Southampton, i think, was it 2015-16 or 2014-15 maybe? I can't remember. I think it may have been 2014-15. Yeah, it was. I'm looking it up right now.
00:06:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
when we bought Lallana, Lovren, Markovic, Balotelli, Moreno, Origi, Chan, Lambert, Mankio, Stewart, Vigoro. I mean, they weren't all great players.
00:07:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
But this is the last time we spent plenty of money in one transfer window. And we made that money from selling Suarez, Acaidi, Aga, Reina, Kelly, Suso, and Robinson.
00:07:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um... But this is just completely different because we aren't sourcing players that are yet to be good. We are sourcing proven players, players that we all know and already appreciate.
00:07:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm going to talk more about that in just a moment. But first, it's time for you to find what supplements are best for you.
00:08:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
So now it's time to

Financial Strategy and Future Acquisitions

00:08:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
speculate. Why are Liverpool putting all of this money into this new super team? Three new goalkeepers, ah two new strikers, if Isak joins, and full-back pairing now in Kirkes and Frimpong.
00:08:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Where has this all come from? what it i think what it is, personally, is we have saved this money. because reportedly Liverpool are the most profitable team in the league.
00:09:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have saved all this money, and FSG have just thought, we've got a lot to spend here. And we need to transition this team into something that will dominate in the long term as well as the short term.
00:09:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
We still have a bit to go We still need some more defenders, maybe another midfielder. But if this super team is being built this summer, then i don't see why we can't dominate for the next five, ten years.
00:09:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got the good enough players. It's just, it's astounding from a Liverpool fan perspective because Florian Vert is the first time that I can remember in the club's history, where we have gone out and we have bought a ready-made superstar.
00:10:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
When was the last time we did that? Maybe you could go back to when we re-signed Ian Rush from Juventus, or when we re-signed Robbie Fowler, you know.
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Robbie Fowler was already past it by that point. So maybe that's the furthest back you have to go. You could maybe argue Thiago, but he was at the end of his career, injury prone, and he only cost us about 20-25 million pounds.
00:10:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it it just makes you wonder, is this what they're trying to do? Are they trying to build a long-term dominating team to compete on all fronts with depth strong enough?
00:11:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
to rotate and last the season, because that is what we struggled with a little bit last season. We didn't rotate, and you could maybe argue that was more of a managerial decision, with Arna Slott just being a bit stubborn, not really playing Harvey Elliott or Federico Chiesa as much as Liverpool fans may have liked to see.
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we only went out on penalties in the Champions League. And we got to a Carabao Cup final where we did look a bit leggy against Newcastle. Maybe rotation would have helped us win that as well.
00:11:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
So where does that leave us for the rest of the summer? Will we still have to buy Alexander Isak? Because that is a player that can play at striker but also on the left wing.
00:11:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dribbling past defenders and setting up goals and scoring them himself as well. We all know he's completely capable. You could also argue we do need another centre-back with the departure of Jarrell Kwanza.
00:12:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Joe Gomez, injury-prone, not reliable enough. The departure of na Nat Phillips as well leaves us with just Gomez, Van Dijk, Kanate and Rhys Williams, if you can really consider him to be a first-team player at this stage.
00:12:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
The rumour is Mark Gay, and I would absolutely love him. We've seen him prove himself on the big stage for England, and he has been a core part of Crystal Palace's defence, despite his injury problems as well.
00:12:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there's this rumour kicking about, about Rodrigo wanting to join Liverpool. Now, if we get Alexander Isak, and we get Mark Gaye,
00:12:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Surely we wouldn't have the wages to support Rodrigo, a player of his calibre. Of course, he was close to joining Liverpool before he made the decision to go to Real Madrid when he was 18.
00:13:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now he's a proven player in La Liga who can score on the big occasion. It's become his sort of trademark thing to score on the big occasion for Real Madrid. He's done it in El Clasico.
00:13:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's done it in finals. So... How much would he cost us? How much ah would he cost us per week as well on his wages? Would we be able to afford him?
00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or do we really need him? I personally think we don't need him, but we just shouldn't get rid of Chiesa. We've already got a quality player... in backup, who can play anywhere across the front three and who has done it on the big stage for Italy.
00:13:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we can use him during AFCON, we can use Harvey Elliott during AFCON to fill in for Mo Salah

Reflecting on Liverpool's Club Values

00:13:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
on the right-hand side. I think that makes way more sense than buying...
00:14:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Rodrigo, when we've already spent so much money and I don't know how much we have left on FFP. I don't think many people know other than those right at the top. And it's pretty confidential information, I would imagine.
00:14:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Correct me if I'm wrong. But as a Liverpool fan, it's not really a time to get greedy, as exciting as this all is, because we need to remember that this is a club who have not built their history on spending so much money.
00:14:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if you are a new fan of this club, that may sound a bit ridiculous when we've just signed Florian Vert going after Alexander Izak for two British transfer wreck transfer records.
00:14:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we'll leave it there for the end of the day. um I'm very excited by the prospect of getting these new players in, even though one of them is 17-year-old. And, you know, Luis Diaz will be a player remembered for generations for Liverpool fans, for that song, for his goals, for his energy, and for just being a fantastic character in the squad.
00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um... You've been listening to the Daily Liverpool podcast. I'm sure we'll do a Diaz remembrance. That sounds a bit morbid, actually. A Diaz episode for the podcast.
00:15:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Thank you very much. Take care and see you for the next one.
