FA Cup Preview: Ipswich vs Bristol Rovers

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Ipswich, brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. It is Friday, it is match preview time and this weekend we're in FA Cup action, home to Bristol Rovers on Sunday afternoon. I'm on my own today to take you through that, but we're going to have a bit of a news roundup as well as some significant news has come through the door, both at Ipswich and outside that will affect us in the battle for survival in the Premier League.
00:00:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'll take you through all of that on today's episode as well. And obviously, of course, we will dive into the the game. It's Bristol Rovers. There's also having a chat about the FA Cup generally, as say the football's most historic competition sets off for another campaign for Ipswich this weekend. Let's go straight into it then.

Jayden Philogene's Transfer to Ipswich

00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to start off with the news and the big story. We spoke about him on yesterday's episode, which was recorded in advance. We had no idea.
00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
What was then going to go on to happen before it ended up coming out? And that is Jayden Philogene. A deal has been agreed. I believe around 20 million pounds of add-ons. I think it was initially reported as 22 and has since revealed to be 20. They were all the talk on Thursday's episode of it. he wouldn He was going to be available. That bit was true. The rumors were it was going to have to be on loan, but splash the cash.
00:01:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
We say, we say 22, I think is with add-ons is help. I believe the medical was taking place on Thursday at time of recording. No official announcement from the club yet. So in theory, it could all still fall through at some stage, but say it should be near enough deal done. The contracts, the deal has been agreed. Sorry. The medical was taken place by the time this episode has come out and the medical had taken place. And it's just leaves the contracts to be signed.
00:02:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we'll get a shot, if any with any luck, we'll get an announcement either either today or over the weekend. And we will have finally six months later than originally hoped we will have Jaden Philogene in the blue shirt. I think Sunday is going to come too early for him to get involved, especially if depending on when an announcement might even take place. But a fantastic addition. We said it all yesterday, didn't we? We know we were confident, I'd say that If Ipswich were in the race, the Ipswich would win the race, given everything that happened in the summer. And obviously Aston Villa's matching rights away from having him in the summer, who have then hasn't worked

Aston Villa's Strategy: Philogene's Sale

00:02:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
out. And in all honesty, it looks like Aston Villa have used Philogene reviews phillogine is a bit of a PSR play because they matched the deal at £18 million that Ipswich agreed. Then there was some sort of clause in the deal and they sold him to hold that he could get him for cheaper. So I think they only paid about £13 million.
00:03:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's barely played and they've moved him on six months later for 22. So, which obviously for them, because he was their product, even though he only came in in the summer, he was their academy player. So that will be pure, pure profit, as they say, on their PSR form of say, what's up about nearly 10 million pounds. So I think that they potentially have used him as a bit of a play there, but like I say, he he hasn't, he struggled for game time this season. So.
00:03:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
he He's not going to be as sharp as he was in the championship to start with, definitely. But what's interesting is ah it's ah the timing of the signing, really. Obviously, we know in the summer, he was really close to the dealers group. We know he wanted them. McKenna was a big fan. We know how good he was at Hull. That's when we sort of, we were just assuming the usual 4-2-3 one was going to carry on. He'd come straight in on that right-hand side, replace Burns, and say maybe or Hutchison moving inside, which has ended up happening.
00:03:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
anyway Hutchinson in the 10 before it was going to happen then. But thing now we're a switch to a the five four one sort of set up. He's taken, he's taken one more attacker out of the team there. So now does it the question mark where he fits in there? Is it D drop Hutchinson or if he's, I think he's only out for a few weeks with this injury, D drop broad head who's coming in and been fantastic when he's played and certainly wouldn't deserve it. So There's a question there at the moment of with the formation change, where does he come in? But he has also played, he has a little bit of experience as a right wing back, which I'm not sure would be the most desired position for him to come in and play, both for i so for the club and for Villagene himself. But yeah owe and and we mentioned on yesterday's episode, when we were talking about the link with him, that he had played 90 minutes in their win against Bayern Munich.
00:04:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he played 90 minutes. He played all 90 minutes of that game as a right wing back. And that is the only time he so he's not been subbed off when he started the game for Villa this year. So maybe there is something there. And he can offer that right wing back role. And then obviously, of course, he'll do the business on the right hand side when when we are playing in the four back formation. Looks to be, obviously, a very sharp addition. We know how good he was at hole last year. He was a massive target in the summer. we They bested the likes of Everton. I think Barcelona are involved at one point in the summer, get the deal done. Matching rights came in from Villa, but now with bested Everton again, who also put a bid in. But once again, he's both Villa and Filijian himself, a pick-dip switch over Everton as a preferred destination. And he will be coming in, so hopefully an announcement at some point later today in an ideal world, or maybe even getting presented out on the pitch.
00:05:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
On Sunday, if he's not going to be available to play, we'll see how it plays out. But like I say, the deal has been agreed. The medical happened on Thursday. So barring some sort of catastrophe there, he will be through the door as a new player. And Ipswich is second January signing of the window. And what a fantastic addition he looks set to be. If he can get anywhere near his form, he had for Hull in the championship last year, he will be a top, top, top player. And we know he's very highly rated in the England youth setup as well.
00:06:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
with the 21s, you get regularly sort of gets picked out as some of the standouts when he plays for the 21s. We know that even before we start breaking through and with Hull and putting the numbers up, he was always popular in and around the England youth set up. So another one to join Dilap and Hutchinson for us there. We're slowly hill building and a little contingent in the England under 21 set up, which hopefully we can break through into some first team call ups for the first time since 2000 as well at some point.
00:06:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
but They fill a gene through the door. I'm hoping to bar some sort of catastrophe in the time from recording to an announcement coming out. He is the second signing of the window. Six months later than we planned, but he is here and he is a tractor boy. And I can't wait to see him out on the pitch. And like I say, if he has anything like how he played at Hull, we are in for a serious talent on our hands on top of the ones we've already got. I'm looking forward to it. But some other big news. That's the big news we're all in Ipswich since we last saw
00:07:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
sat down for a recording, but some big news has also come out in the last couple of days in between our other side of our transfer, January transfer two parts special is there's been some big changes of management down in the the bottom end of the Premier League, which obviously, fortunately is where we find ourselves, the the fight for survival. First of all, it was Julien Lopate, he lost his job, let go by West Ham,
00:07:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah after a disappointing run, he was sort of, he was really close to the sack a little while ago. He then beat walls and put a little run together for a couple of games, kept himself in, but that started to tail off again. Most time, just sort of pulled themselves right out of it for a bit, but then as I say, lost it again, I sort of back in the scrap again. Now Palace especially have caught them up now that they're sort of, they're obviously sensing they're starting to fall back into the scrap. So they've made a decision. He's gone.
00:08:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Graham Potter has come in for his first

Managerial Changes Impacting Ipswich

00:08:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
job since he was let go by Chelsea. They say he's what he's by at his time. He's turned down a couple of opportunities in his time off. He said he was going to take some time off that Chelsea job. He is now back. So it'll be interesting to see how he gets on at West Ham. See, they're sort of the team closest to pulling themselves out of the fight. So it's not, if they were as to kind of run a form and can't tell you what, wouldn't be the end of the world. wouldn't They're not the biggest threat to as ah who we're trying to compete with in the battle for survival. They're the team, like I said, the closest to sort of getting out of it and just becoming the sort of bottom, the top of the bottom half sort of category where but at the moment it's Man United and Tottenham there ah in that sort of bracket. But that'd be interesting to see how that plays out because they do have a good squad West Ham. They've been underachieving this year with the quality they have in that squad. So Graham Potter has come in and then the breaking news from that came out on Thursday.
00:09:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sean Dyche has been sacked by Everton as well, just three hours before their FA Cup game against Peterborough in some of the most random timing for a signing I've seen in a long time. But again, one win in 11, they were on, he he sure he's shown them up defensively at the back as he always does, but they haven't been scoring goals. That's been the problem. They're struggling for results and they have fallen. They are much more than West Ham, a team to target. Two points above us, I believe, in the table and in a significantly worse, runner four, obviously, we still think we had seven points in the last five games or something like that. It was when I looked up the other day to everyone with one win, 11, some good draws against the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City. But overall, the form has been poor. They're not scoring goals. And ultimately, Dyche has been let go. And the current front runner is David Moyes to go back for the first time since he left Manchester United.
00:10:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
around 10 years ago or whatever that would have been. um Again, Mois is far more versed in the relegation scrap than Potter is because he that obviously had a time of Brighton but he pulled them right out of it and got them Europe chasing and then obviously Chelsea, well, he was he was probably about as close to relegation as he was at Brighton, to be honest, the way things ended up at Chelsea. But he's not he's not got the experience in the relegation scrap. That's the worry of Mois. He knows the club.
00:10:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
He knows his way around a relegation fight. So that's potentially a cause of concern if it does end up being David Moyes, but Sean Dyche is gone. We don't know how quickly they're going to get, Everton will get somebody in, but significant news in terms of the Premier League survival race at two different teams. By the time we go and play our games in midweek, we have two different teams. We'll have a new manager in place down the bottom, which is the latest shake up in the like I say, down the bottom that seems to change every single week, have this little confidence levels of staying up every day and very much a week by week thing this year. And it's been a really interesting week this week with some of the results that have gone by and now two managers losing their jobs. So that sets up the Premier League nicely for its return midweek next week. But we're going to leave that there and return our focus to the FA Cup after this short message.
00:12:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we're back for part two of your Friday edition of the Daily Ipswich. Turn of focus back to the FA Cup. Now Bristol Rovers at home on Sunday afternoon in the third round and the FA Cup, like I say, the most historic competition in football has had mixed results for town over the years. It's been a long time to go back to Roger Osborne's winner against Arsenal in 78 and a competition that was brought a lot of success and some fantastic moments so down the years but recent history hadn't it ah it turned a bit sour until ki like a lot of things it started to turn sour until Keira McKenna turned up. I mean like that run of sort of that is such an important competition the FA Cup it sort of it feels like it's dying off in a lot of people's views and sort of how they look at it now they sort of see it as not as important as they should do it's ah so a famous competition that
00:13:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
and just we just want a cup run, don't we, that we haven't progressed far in the FA Cup for God knows how many years now that it's just it'll be fantastic as much as your as the argument to focus on the league and going out isn't the end of the world because so maybe having those extra midweek games for if he progressed further could increase the chances of injuries or be a bit of a distraction. But you want a cup run. We said it before the Carabao Cup game against and Wimbledon that We haven't had a cup run for so many years, and that's something to get excited about. But getting to the later stages of competitions, it just adds, even if you say whatever happens in the league, it just adds a bit of feel good. You look forward to those games when they come around in the cup, and especially the FA Cup. and So to fall at the first hurdle in the League Cup was really disappointing, so we don't want to do the same again. But unfortunately, some of them weve become part of the magic of the cup has died off
00:14:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
in the last sort of 15 years or so. So ah that run of two wins in 11 years between the 9-10 season and 22-23. I think it was Lincoln and Oldham both after replays as the only two times we won once. I think one was the first round when we were in league one. One was the um was the third round back in the championship day. And I think it was this championship relegation season.
00:14:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
success was seriously lacking in the FA Cup. There was nothing to get excited about. It's just, but like I said, the famous old competition, I'm excited for it. You want a cup run. I really want it. I'd really, really want a cup run this year. Something to get excited about to say, well, however the leaf, and like I said, the Premier Leaf, it changes week by week in terms of morale and my confidence and the ah chances of survival. A cup run gives something to look forward to all the time is what we hope for. And It has turned, with the cup form has turned significantly since Kieran McKenna took over. like my so Like many things have, like I said, we went from two wins, just the two wins in an 11 year period, to but McKenna has won four out of his six FA Cup ties, which is ah the best round we've had in recent years, going from the first round to the fourth round, the first season after he took over.
00:15:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, I think we had to defeat the Barrow, actually, in his first season, which after after the um after to progressing against Oldham, I think... I'm not sure, actually. sure I'm doubting myself now, because it was in the same month McKenna took over. maybe he wouldn't Maybe he wasn't in charge with time of time in that Barrow game. I'm doubting myself now, but certainly he was in charge of season after. Comfortable wins against Bracknell Town in round one, Buxton in round two, Rotherham in round three,
00:15:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Only a replay against Burnley in the fourth round at Portland Road. Looking set to go go to penalties in the replay against Burnley in the fourth round at Turthmore. But for a last minute, Nathan Teller goal to win it for Burnley. So the best run in the cup we've enjoyed for a long time. three Progressing through three rounds and they've narrowly been away from again against Burnley.
00:16:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
in that, of which sort of i brought some enjoyment and some excitement back to the FA Cup. And then last year, well, it started off a fairly run-in-the-mill 3-1 win against Wimbledon. You draw Maidstone United at home and you think, right, here we go. Chance to get in the fifth round. ah So bas obviously back to the third round for the first time in a while, but being back in the championship, beat Wimbledon.
00:16:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
thinking, here we go. Can you sense a cup run? We've got a nice draw. And the less said about Maidstone, the better and we put it that way. Yeah, we're staying on a fantastic season last year, that Maidstone result. But like guess I think they said that was I felt like an opportunity missed with the draw that was there to have a run and a cut. And that's just an opportunity I loved. I'd love to see of avenge this year. yeah Go and put a couple of games together.
00:17:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
It'll be fantastic, I think. So the FA Cup brings back to the some of the best memories this competition for a lot of football fans, both with Ipswich and just generally ah across the country that the FA Cup provides so many magical moments. And I'm hoping um'm really hoping we can go for a run deep into the competition this year.

Ipswich's FA Cup Ambitions

00:17:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the first step on that journey and that's what on the this season's FA Cup is Bristol Rovers on Sunday afternoon. So I will dive in to look ahead to that game after this short message from one of our sponsors.
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome back to the final part of today's Daily Hip Switch. And we're trying to look ahead to Sunday's Afternoons game at Portland Road. Bristol Rovers, the visitors, and the third round, the FA Cup. 20th in League One, they sit currently, five points ahead of the drop, and they crawl either team below them, they're trying to catch. There have been a significant change on round Bristol Rovers in the last couple of weeks, with, I think it was two or three weeks ago,
00:18:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Matt Taylor was sacked and he's been replaced by Enigo Calderon, who's come in and sort of steadied the ship a bit after a dodgy run of results, including a 1-0 win against Cambridge last weekend, which would have been a big boost to them and sort of set them up, maybe give them a bit of confidence coming into this FA Cup tie. But like I said, it was a bit of a dodgy run before that. They only had one win in the eight games before that Cambridge result last weekend, which was their win 4-3 penalty shootout win against Barnsley in the previous round of this cup after a 0-0 draw in after 90 minutes. and they've said they shot In this competition, they've obviously we know replays have been scrapped this year in favour of extra time and penalties on the day.

Bristol Rovers' FA Cup Journey

00:19:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
and they have been they've been They've saved themselves a couple of replays in the process Bristol Rovers because they won their first round tie in extra time and they've won their second round tie on penalties.
00:19:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
They would have been, so they have been a team that has missed out on having a couple of replays. So, but fingers crossed that the game is the, we don't have, we wouldn't get an end up in that situation on Sunday. I like to think that we could get the job done about the need for extra time and penalties, but you never know with the FA Cup. And obviously January has opened up now. We've brought in Ben Godfrey so far and Jayden and say, and should, Jayden Philadine should follow very, very shortly.
00:20:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've been busy as well. I found really top sign and they've managed to name this week is that they've picked up Romain Sawyer's former Brentford and West Bromford fielder, nearly 250 championship experiences to his name, played just short 20 games in the Premier League as well, really bring so much experience to their squad, played so many games and at higher levels and they brought him in, which will be, um I assume he'd go straight in for the game on Sunday and that will help them out massively and like I said the experience that will bring to their squad and I feel like they're going to come to Portland Road with a bit of confidence Bristol Road was that had we had this tie been three weeks or three weeks ago or the other side of Christmas probably that they wouldn't have had so it's going to be a tougher challenge than maybe we thought when the draw was announced and but we but we'll see how it plays out it should still be
00:21:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wish it would be a win on paper is what I'm trying to say. I'm trying to skirt around it because I don't want but want don it to be embarrassing if we don't get a result on Sunday. But is regardless of what goes and what happens there, hey, they're feeling calm and they're playing better under a new manager, it's a game which should win, regardless of what team gets put out. And it is likely that we will rotate. You'd expect a Ben Godfrey debut.
00:21:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
in there, I'd assume, like I said, I assume he's going to come too early for Philadrine, given that he's not even officially announced the time of recording. There's going to be a fairly short turnaround, but maybe we will see him off the bench. Expect, say, Dilap probably, expect the likes of Dilap to be rested. I think people like, say, I imagine Phillips would get a game from the start. You think, I think I'd probably imagine Burgess would come back in. I think we'd scrap the five at the back. I think we'd, well, I think we'll go back to the four, two, three, one, try and I said, I expect lots of changes. i don't don't want You never want to make too many changes because it can upset the flow of the team and just lead to... I think that was the issue that was there with Maidstone. I thought, I think it was too many changes, just struggled to get in the flow of the game and then ultimately cost us the results. So I think there'll be lessons learned from there. I don't think it will be near enough a full team, James. I reckon Muric will come back in and goal. I think so imagine Burgess will come back in and send her back. I'd expect Godfrey to
00:22:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
mate I'd expect Godfrey to play and I'd expect Godfrey to be at right back most likely. Maybe he'd go centre-half, Harry Clarke was going to play, but ah so I definitely think Godfrey will be in there somewhere. I think Phillips will play, will start. I think Jack Taylor will start. I think Jack Clarke will start as well. i I reckon Burns will probably start. ah gonna So there's going to be some sort of changes though. So I'd expect Al Hamadi to be in there as well, just because like I said, we have to give Dilap a

Ipswich's Squad Rotation Strategy

00:22:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
rest. and this there a okay If there's a game you're going to do it, it's a game against a team two divisions lower than you in the FA Cup. That's the chance to give them a rest ahead of Brighton in midweek. And then obviously the games we've got coming up after that as well. I'd expect to see a fairly heavily rotated side. And it's a sort of, it's an opportunity for us to mix it up a bit. And let's say we switched to the five four one, we've become very used to having
00:23:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
minimal possession on the ball, sort of 20-25% springing the counter attack, but it won't be like that in this game. It's a chance to sort of get back to how we've played the last couple of seasons. as It's a chance to dictate the flow of the game, see a lot of the ball, sort of strut our stuff a little bit. obviously And also, like I say, I expect the team to rotate. And it's an opportunity, when when there's rotation, it's an opportunity for the players who come in to show themselves and push themselves to try and be in that starting 11 for Brighton. There's a few, there's still, but but as well as we've been playing recently, there's a couple of positions that still you feel could be so a good performance from somebody against Bristol Rovers, could see them in there against Brighton. And you've got to take your chance when you're given them, whether that is, if it went especially like in these cup games, for somebody who comes in, doesn't normally start. There's an opportunity there and hopefully there'll be a few players who want to prove themselves
00:24:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
in this game. And like I said, I'm hoping it will be an entertaining one. I'm hoping we get on the ball, we play on the front foot. Like we've seen over the back to like, it has been the last couple of years. And say it's a game, like I said, regardless of what team is out there, it's a game that we should win. And it will be disappointing to be sat here on a Monday reaction episode, reflecting on going out of the FA Cup. We want to, it's an opportunity, I'd love a cup run. I've said it loads of times on today's episode, and this is a good opportunity to go and short set to set off and get the first win out of the way, get to the fourth round, and we'll see where we can see where the competition takes us from there. But so I'd expect I'm going to I'm going to go probably ah freak six or seven changes, fairly similar to maybe say roughly similar to how many changes there was for Wimbledon, even though that didn't work out for us, maybe a couple less that than that game. But I'd expect to see
00:25:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
So ah I'm next looking forward to seeing Ben Godfrey. I'm confident he will start in this game to get a first look at him for the Portland Road faithful, see how he plays out. And um I think there'll be a tailbeat. He's going to be in that category of someone who can maybe play their way into the team against Brighton on Thursday. And it should be, like I say, i'm um hoping you I hope it's an entertaining game. Obviously, I want to regret i take a boring game as long as we got through to the fourth round. But you want to see a bit of entertainment, I'm hoping. say After a few games of, don't get me wrong, as good as the performances have been, a few games to sort of sit back, counter-attack. It'd be nice to see a sort of play you play the regular football we got used to in the last couple of years on the front for dictating the play, having and having a lot more possession on the ball. I'm hoping it's going to play out like that. And if it does, it should be a good game to watch for. And um so I say we should be getting a result. It's hard to do a prediction for this because um I don't know how many changes it's going to be.
00:26:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
But i'm I'm going to do my best to give a prediction. I think it's going to be a fairly comfortable 2-0 win. I think we're just going to control the game from start to finish, hopefully get a couple of goals for players who need them for confidence. And I think, weren't like I said, I think there'll be a few ah have a fair few changes. so So I'm hoping some players who haven't got there's some players who are off who haven't got off the mark for the club, yeah, I'm hoping this could be a game for them to maybe present themselves. I'm thinking the likes of Jack Clark, people like that, to sort of show themself, show off a bit, show the fans what we've maybe not seen in some of the Premier League games, hopefully get that first goal under their name, boost their confidence going into the run of Premier League games coming up. And all things going well, we will be come Sunday around sort of Sunday evening, where hopefully we will be in the hat for the first round, fourth round, sorry, and we can keep ourselves and we can keep the hope and excitement up that maybe there'll be
00:27:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
a dream of an FA Cup run this year. So we haven't progressed to the latter stage of the competition in so many years. Now it'd be fantastic if this was the year. And that we've got to start that off against Bristol where I was on
