Podcast Introduction

Speaker
Every club. Every day. The Global Sports Podcast Network. Hello and welcome to the Liverpool versus Ipswich crossover on the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Louis Easton and I will be representing the Daily Liverpool team. And joining me from the Daily Ipswich team is Mr Richard Poppel. How are you doing, mate? How are you? how How are you looking forward to the match as well?
00:00:30
Speaker
ah Well, I'm all alright. yeah I'm doing very well, thank you. I hope you hope you're well too. It's nice to be on the ah the Daily Liverpool. Thank you. Yeah, am I looking forward to the match?

Team Performances and Expectations

00:00:41
Speaker
Based on the last couple of results that we've had, potentially not. But you know, I am a bit of an optimist, so we just have to put our best foot forward and hope for ah a better performance than we put against Man City last week.
00:00:52
Speaker
Good, yes, good to be optimistic. ah Obviously Ipswich with the fresher legs as well. ah Liverpool plays ah on a Tuesday night, granted at Anfield, but it was a hard-fought victory against Lille. On the weekend as well, we got a nice win there. Again, left it late against Nottingham Forest and Ipswich definitely a regressible last weekend against a now flying Manchester City side did you do you base that more on a poor Ipswich performance than a great Manchester City performance or is it a bit of both in your eyes? I mean yeah we weren't great I think that that was one of the um
00:01:35
Speaker
particularly our home. And we we had a very poor result against Newcastle at home as well. We lost 4-0 just before Christmas. But I think defensively that's the most open we've looked all season, the game against City. But I think it's fair to say that Man City are back to a certain ah degree. They look like they're flying again. And obviously they've gone into the transfer window and kind of like bolstered as they always do. and So I think we caught them at a bit of a bad time, to be perfectly honest.
00:01:59
Speaker
um Yeah, I mean, it was disappointing. I think the game against Brighton for us a few a few days before that, even though Brighton are a quality side, obviously, that was the opportunity to maybe pick up a point or something. we didn't We never expected to get anything from the City game. and But yeah, it was a bit of a worry that we shipped as many goals as that. um And I think the focus this week will have been to try and tighten up a bit, obviously, before heading to ah to Anfield.
00:02:26
Speaker
It's an exciting time to be an Ipswich

Ipswich's Premier League Journey

00:02:28
Speaker
Town fan. I mean, based on the entire season, ah you know, it's your first time back in the Premier League since the 90s, I believe, maybe the early 2000s. I can't exactly remember. It was before I was born probably, but... ah You know, signings are being made. You're making a big signing from the aforementioned Brighton, Julio Enciso. Is that someone who you think can add some quality into the side, ah especially if he is finalised before the weekend and ready to play for Ipswich? He'll definitely add quality because I think he's ah he's a really good player whenever I've seen him for Brighton, particularly before he got that injury last year. He was kind of electric, really, but they've got
00:03:09
Speaker
a plethora of wingers, haven't they, that are high quality. So obviously he went out for some game time and he's come to Ipswich. I mean, i think I think he's definitely a difference maker for us. We've got quite a lot of players in that position, to be honest. We've we've just bought Jadon Philogene from Aston Villa, which is quite an exciting signing as well, and someone we were after last summer. But I think Jadon Clark in the summer as well, and I think it's good quality.
00:03:34
Speaker
Jack, clark's gro I mean, he's not really hit the ground running Ipswich, to be honest. He's been a little bit disappointing, but I think um there's definitely a quality player in there, I agree. and But yeah, I mean, you know, I think from our point of view, we need goals. We've been heavily reliant on Liam to lap, as I'm sure everybody has seen from the outside. um We need more threat. And I think and see so, as I've heard from lots of Brighton fans, loves a shot. So anytime he's, you know, looking towards the goal, he's going to take a pop at it. So we kind of need that at the moment, to be honest.
00:04:03
Speaker
And he's also one of those players that went back down from a 50-50 as well, even despite his size, but he is a very powerful individual and I think he is someone who can certainly add a lot of quality to your site. I like to do this as well um whenever I'm hosting a crossover episode with them with another team. ah Obviously, there is quite a difference in quality between Liverpool and Ipswich this season. um But I mean that with absolutely no disrespect. But ah i I'll do this as well. ah But I want to ask you first, if there is one Liverpool player that you could take and add into that Ipswich team, ah who would it be and why?
00:04:46
Speaker
Well, you could go at the back or the front, really. I think that that they're the they're the areas of the pitch where we're struggling. I mean, Mo Salah, obviously anyone would want in their team, but I think I'd probably go for Van Dijk purely because, yeah you know, I think yeah over the last six or seven years, he's probably been the best defender in the Premier League and for most of those seasons, really, or or certainly in and around that top um area. And I think, you know, that's what you need in in this division. You need that rock that can kind of like hold the whole thing together. So I'd go for Van Dijk.

Liverpool's Impact on Ipswich?

00:05:16
Speaker
Who would you get rid of? Godfrey? What an a lip switch. Yeah, like who would you leave out if you were to put Van Dijk in? Oh, I see. Right. Yeah. Well, I mean, any of our defenders, to be perfectly honest, and that's not selling them down the and they's not selling them down the river. But, you know, if we have Virgil Van Dijk in our squad, I'm sure he would walk into the team. So um take your pick, really.
00:05:36
Speaker
I'd definitely pick Godfrey, I'll say that much. I think Daro Shay's definitely a quality player. And another absolutely quality defender, I think, ah from Ipswich. And this is probably the player that I'd put in the Liverpool team ah if I was to take someone from Ipswich, Leif Davis. I think he has real quality as sort of overlapping fullback. I mean, he had a bit of a shaky start against Mo Salah on the first day of the season.
00:06:01
Speaker
um I remember that one vividly because I just couldn't believe how good Salah looked again but Leaf Davis was great in the championship last season and he's been terrific for you guys I think this season you know he's got a goal this i at some point I can't remember who it was against ah But i think I think he is ah definitely one of your shining lights in the in this

Ipswich's Fan Support and Culture

00:06:26
Speaker
season. And I think you know Ipswich aren't a team that are guaranteed to go down. I mean, you're on the same points as Wolves. ah You're only behind on goal difference. And, well, you've got the same amount of points from your last five matches. I just think
00:06:41
Speaker
Leicester and Southampton are lacking in quality compared to Ipswich Town this season at least. ah You know, Southampton are a given to go down. Leicester City really aren't doing enough and appointing Rud van Nistelroy halfway through the season was a decision that I just couldn't understand. So I think The only thing that's keeping wolves above Ipswich at the moment is probably Mateus Kunia. And they're they're sort of relying on him in the same way that ah Liam Dilap is being relied on, as you said, for goals ah for Ipswich. So, you know, it's you can toss a coin and decide who goes down.
00:07:17
Speaker
um And I think another real selling point for Ipswich is the fact that your fans are some of the best in the Premier League, you know, just so loud every single game. um Is that something that happened in when you were in the championship last season? Or do you think ah this has just happened this season over excitement to be in the Premier League?
00:07:39
Speaker
No, it's not just happened this season. I think it's something that um ah back in 2018 when Ips which were really on the slide and we and we got relegated into League One for the first time in God knows how long. I think 50 or 60 years or something since we've been in the third division. and There was a group of kind of like fans that were were kind of like trying to galvanise the club at that point because it was a really bad situation, the previous owners and all the rest of it. It was really disconnected the whole thing. So there was a group of fans that tried to get things going. And I think from that point, there's been a an emphasis to try and like bring a bit of noise and a bit of energy back into the stadium and obviously as we've improved on the pitch over those years since McKenna came in and the back-to-back promotions then obviously that's just gone even further to the point where
00:08:23
Speaker
you know as you say the crowds are fantastic but I think Ipswich have always had a bigger support base than I think people give it credit for because it's you know it's kind of like the one club in the whole area really so it's got quite a large support base um and obviously before your time and even before my time you know Ipswich were a great team back in the day so it's always had a quite a big following and I think Because of that, we've kind of got fans all over the country and I guess because we've had a bit of success, they've kind of come out of the woodwork a little bit more. um But yeah, we've always had good good following and and I think our away support is um is fantastic.
00:08:56
Speaker
Yeah, but the thing is with Ipswich, you know, you say they have a big following, but that can also be a a blessing and a curse, you know, if you attract tourists who aren't familiar with the sort of culture or ah songs and chants of a football club, you know, that's part of the curse that's, you know, even at Liverpool sometimes, Anfield can sometimes not be as loud on match days because loads of touring fans have managed to get tickets ah from major companies. And You know, Ipswich, I feel like have got a bit of exposure, you know, from Ed Sheeran ah this season, especially turning up to the matches wearing Ipswich shirts. But I'm just so I'm so impressed with the turnout every single time I turn on the TV and have a look at Portman Road. And I think that culture does certainly go back for generations.
00:09:48
Speaker
Yeah, yeah right it's a great old ground, isn't it? You know, you look at you look at forest this year doing well. A part of that is because the city ground is a really difficult place to go to it's an old school ground. And, you know, I think it can still be a little bit intimidating for the for the um for the away team a little bit. And I think even though our record at Portman Road hasn't been brilliant, the atmosphere has. And I think that, you know, we obviously need to maintain that towards, ah you know, as we get to the end of the season and hopefully the results at home turn a little bit as well. But yeah, but the fans are great. And I think, you know, you you mentioned the shearing thing and stuff that helps with the branding and all the rest of it. But I

Ipswich's Premier League Survival Hopes

00:10:22
Speaker
think there is an authentic following to Ipswich, which hopefully. Absolutely. Hopefully maintains, you know, even if we don't manage to stay in the Premier League. Well, do you think you'll stay in the Premier League?
00:10:33
Speaker
I think what you said is right. you know um There's a very good chance that we could. i mean I think our season's not going to be defined by losing 6-0 to Man City. It doesn't help, obviously, but um and it wasn't a great result, but it's how we respond to it, really. I think what we're looking for this weekend is not to get smashed by Liverpool. um Obviously, we would have a positive result, a draw or a win or whatever, but you know the reality is that that's very unlikely. so the next thing is don't get smashed again try and be competitive as we have done in fairness for most of the season you know even when we played you on the opening game of the opening day of the season that first half was really really even and we gave a good account of ourselves but our problem has been not being able to maintain that for 90 minutes often enough you know we're we're good in games up to 60-70 minutes and then we tend to fall away which
00:11:19
Speaker
I guess is a bit of a symptom of coming up so quickly through the leagues and not managing to kind of like you know up the squad quickly enough in terms of quality. But yeah, we've I think we've got a good chance because we've got a fantastic manager and we've got quite a lot of talented players now.
00:11:34
Speaker
Yeah, Kira McKenna has to be one of the most loved managers in the Premier League. I've noticed that a lot of a lot of people have turned on their managers this year or some point in between. But Kira McKenna, despite the position that you're in, has always been adored by Ipswich fans. And it's really refreshing to see that. um Definitely a very respectable club. Ipswich. We will talk more about the match ah in just a moment and of course ah more about Liverpool. But first, you can find out what we use to record here at the Global Sports Podcast Network. Speaker
don't know why it looped ah ah few technical difficulties took couple of times to get this recording underway but and we'll talk more about the football and ah if richard has any questions about liverpool as well but ah and preview the match it's during the three o'clock ah Blackout, so if you are watching it in the UK, good luck trying to get it on your TV. ah But it's definitely a spectacle whenever there's a match at Anfield, absolutely. Ipswich with the fresher legs, like I mentioned, how do you see this match going? um And if Ipswich are to get a win out of Liverpool, how would it be done?
00:13:26
Speaker
Are you getting the excuses in already with the fresher legs? Oh, yes, absolutely. You have to get them in as early as possible. Yeah, I'm just looking at your bench. I'm not sure if fresher legs matters too much. um Yeah, and i I do have a question for you really about Liverpool, I suppose. Are you surprised? You must be surprised with this season because, you know, I mean, obviously on paper Liverpool have got a quality squad, but they have done for a number of years.
00:13:50
Speaker
But the last couple of years, there was a bit of a drop off. Slots obviously come in and has done what he's done. But it's now got to the point where it's not just a good start. I mean, winning you know against Lille, you've won seven in a row in the Champions League. That's very, very rare indeed for teams to do that. And then obviously you're doing what you're doing in the Premier League as well. Are you ah you surprised that you're maintaining this?

Liverpool's Surprising Success

00:14:13
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, this is a question that does come up often whenever I do get on a crossover and it's not hard to see why. I mean, it's a manager's first season and for us to be almost, I'm not going to say we are, but almost running away with it at this stage.
00:14:28
Speaker
um Yes, absolutely, I'm surprised, but I'm not as surprised with Liverpool's performance as I am with the sort of drop-off that's happened at Arsenal and Manchester City. I know they both had their own ah they both had their own problems, but it's just I find it funny that looking back before the season started, everyone was looking at those two to be the favourites, and now it's Liverpool and Forest who are now the favourites all of a sudden. so Yes, I'm surprised and ah pleasantly surprised by how we're playing, but I don't think we are absolutely unbeatable. I still see some um vulnerabilities in them, namely our defence, you know, our full-back positions, you know, Trent's had a bit of a mixed new year. ah We've obviously got the competition now between Robertson and Timacast because neither of them look like they're absolutely nailed on at this moment in time.
00:15:21
Speaker
um You know, Jota's injured again, Kanate has his own problems. So I still think there are vulnerabilities in there, but like you mentioned earlier, our bench is so strong and our depth is so strong that and that's something that Arsenal and Manchester City don't really have. You know, Arsenal don't have a solid nailed on number nine and they're struggling from the right hand side now as well with the lack of Saka.
00:15:47
Speaker
And Saliba now, so I'm not um too worried about Arsenal at the moment. Manchester City, I know they've let themselves down with how far behind they've fallen from us, but the way they're playing at the moment and you know that convincing of a scoreline to go to you guys and win 6-0 is absolutely worrying.
00:16:08
Speaker
But if we are fighting on all four fronts, I do think we have the squad depth to do it. But honestly, before this season, I would have taken top four and a Champions League quarterfinal. Now I'm dreaming. Yeah, what what what what is the expectation now? Because it gets to the point, doesn't it, where you're like, well, um we're still in four competitions. um Surprisingly, to a certain extent, given you know given last season or whatever, but now it's like, my God, yeah, we could we could kind of like clean sweep or or certainly win two of those competitions, potentially fairly straightforwardly. you know Think of the League Cup. I imagine you'll turn that round against Spurs, you would think, Anfield. And then the League, you've obviously got a jump start on everybody else. so
00:16:48
Speaker
Is there a concern that you may hit a bit of a patch or is it just like we look pretty pretty useless at the moment? You can't say there's a lack of experience within the squad for some of our players. I mean Van Dyke, Salah, Trent, Robertson, Allison, they've all been here before but we have a lot of new flake faces that have come in ah since we won the league in 2021.
00:17:12
Speaker
a completely changed midfield. Dominic Subos live, for example, granted he's an ah someone who I don't think will be two phase because he already captains his country. and Ryan Gravenberg, I mean, this is a new position for him. So it's just the sort of imagination of can we keep this going? And I think we, I don't think there's any reason we can't. Considering our leadership team that we have as well, ah you you know, Van Dyke is such a good leader, and he can completely rally everyone and he's not fazed by the big occasion.
00:17:46
Speaker
um I just think we've gotten through the hardest part of the season now, you know, the congested winter ah time, but we still have some midweek features coming up, but we're just coming out of that ah almost looking unscathed. We've only lost once all season in the Premier League. I mean, that is, I would never have imagined that before.
00:18:09
Speaker
ah game was played this season so i I don't see why we can't challenge for all four you know we're still in the FA Cup we've got Plymouth next round we should be beating them Spurs I think my only issue with Spurs is the fact that they they've basically had a write-off for the Premier League so they have to go for the League Cup or the Europa League now um So that that's my worry with them. But we can, we have every right to dream of the Champions League. You know, we play at Anfield, that's our home stadium. Probably the worst place to go in a return fixture in the Champions League. You've heard all of these ah footballing greats say it. So yes, i I think if we don't win either the Premier League or the Champions League, I will be disappointed. Hmm. Yeah, fair enough. Especially the Premier League.
00:19:01
Speaker
yeah Yeah, it's interesting stuff. I mean, I think um i think from an outsider's point of view, you know i've i've not I've not seen Liverpool play a huge amount this season. I've caught a few games and and and scraps of games and stuff, and you can't you can't not be impressed by what he's done really. And I think particularly the midfield, because as you say, the front and back, there's there's people that have been around for a little while now and people that, you know,
00:19:23
Speaker
you think of Salah, Salah is having one of his best years ever. um And I don't think anyone quite saw him recreating this kind of like level of performance on a consistent basis, but he really is. Same with Van Dyke, right? um But it's that midfield that's really come together this year, which is, which is really, really helping you. And I think that's been the standout midfield in the league by by quite a distance, I would say.
00:19:44
Speaker
Yeah and we've given ourselves a bit of a headache because it's like who who do you leave out? You know we're leaving out Harvey Elliott and i I think he gets into any other Premier League side at the moment. and ah He's that good and you know when he comes off the bench he looks so influential. He just scored a goal against Lille in midweek. Granted it was a huge deflection but he has he plays with so much character and passion and You know, I think another reason we're doing so well is because of our academy. You know, it was our academy team, basically, that finished the match in the League Cup final last season and against Chelsea. So we have such a good setup and that's why I think we're doing so well. We're going about our business the right way, rather than just throwing a loads of money into a new players.

Liverpool's Strategic Evolution

00:20:30
Speaker
We sort of built a team and built this entire system with honor slots coming in, just coming in perfectly and taking over exactly where Klopp left off.
00:20:39
Speaker
um But just back to this match that we've got ah on Saturday, if Ipswich are to grab a point, maybe even three points at Anfield, how would they go about it based on the way that Ipswich matches have gone this season? would it be Would it have to be starting off strong? Would it be a last-minute equaliser or a winner maybe? What seems like an Ipswich way to do things?
00:21:02
Speaker
ah Well, very much a smash and grab, I think, um and I think it would come from an early an early goal rather than you know us snatching something later on. We did win at Wolves in the last minute, but that was very much the exception to kind of the rule this season. i mean Like I said, we've we've we've been really competitive in games, up to most games, up to you know the 60-70 minute mark and then the quality of a Premier League side that you know the teams can bring off the bench or you know the superior fitness or whatever um has kind of told later in the games because we've become more and more toothless I suppose as the 90 minutes has gone on. So I think if we're going to get anything we have to strike early, Dilap is 100% a threat, he's a threat to anyone um so you know you have to hope that he has a moment of magic or
00:21:49
Speaker
Philogene or Hutchinson or in CSO or one of our tricky wingers kind of like gets the better of you know, your full backs and as you mentioned earlier that that is the Semi weakness in Liverpool, but the thing is everyone's been talking about that for years particularly about Trent And yeah, it's it has hurt you at times, but it's not particularly hurting you this season. So um We'll see about that. But I think that they're the areas that we could hurt you is out wide potentially um but it's whether we can have any kind of confidence in sort of like holding on to a clean sheet. And I don't think that realistically, unless you have an appalling day in front of goal, that we can really hold out for that. So best best case scenario for us, I think would be like 1-1 or something like that. you know We nick an early goal and then we frustrate you and you you know you score once, but we managed to hold on to a point, but you know that's a long shot, obviously.
00:22:42
Speaker
But we did win at Spurs. We put in a very good performance at Arsenal. um We limited them to very little. I know they're struggling upfront and stuff, but you know, it's still Arsenal with it. They're still good quality players on the pitch. And the the win at Spurs was based on those early goals. You know, we we were tuning a lap at halftime in that game and we managed to hang on in the second half. So I wouldn't rule it out. Obviously we have a chance to football match between two teams, but at the same time, it's, you know, a massive long shot.
00:23:11
Speaker
And also let's not forget the fact that it is the Premier League and yeah absolutely anything can happen. We're going to take another short break now as you find out what we do here at the Global Sports Podcast Network. The Global Sports Podcast Network is changing the face of football podcasts.

Speaker
the global sports podcast network And again, playing twice just to toy with us. Just so frustrating. So we'll move on to some quick predictions. I mean, I absolutely hate making predictions, but I've been encouraged to by the team to get yeah your thoughts on what the score will be. ah What do you think? So you said one always the best case scenario. You can't see Ipswich coming away at all with a win. Why do you say that? Is that just based on recent form or is that just you being
00:24:13
Speaker
a bit realistic with yourself because you mentioned the fact that you're positive and optimistic earlier. Well I am because I've predicted us to stay up and I've predicted us to stay up more comfortably than we're looking at the moment so I was very optimistic before the start of the season. um Yeah I am so optimistic that we can stay in the league and again the game at Anfield isn't going to define that is it so anything we get is going to be an absolute bonus.
00:24:38
Speaker
um I mean, I would say this, this is before your time, Louis, but the last two times, two of the last three times Ipswich have been to Anfield, we won. um And we've only won twice in our history there. And that was those two times. So, wow you know, there's there's food for thought. One was in the 90s and one was in the year 2000. But still, we haven't been in the Premier League for a long time. So, you know, we'll take those stats. Going for the hat trick. Are there any Ipswich players that I may know from that era?
00:25:07
Speaker
marcus stewart he was um I know the name. like Yeah, he was our striker at that time who had an amazing year. Matt Holland you may have heard of, I don't know. i Vaguely, um' I must have heard his name mentioned once or twice.
00:25:20
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, like, like I said, it's before my time, but and I don't think the 90s late 90s were as good as everyone says they were. Just my opinion. But come anyway, you you had to be there. It was terrific. um Anyway, so I will give i'll give you my give you my prediction. Anyway, I, I will predict a win for Liverpool. I think it will be a two one win for you because I There's a chance you take your eye off this a little bit. It's in between two Champions League games. and You occasionally throw an egg at Anfield in the league sometimes. and you know Crystal Palace last year towards the end of the season. Forest earlier this year. You occasionally do it. and Maybe we get lucky and and you do it this weekend and we nick something. But I think 2-1 to one see you guys.
00:26:04

Yeah, that's those matches are the reason why I've ah learnt to be very humble. And yeah and also also losing to Manchester City in the league by one point on numerous occasions now. Yeah, you guys have had that pain, yeah.

And also I wanted to make the point, I made the point ah about this in the group chat earlier, um I think yesterday actually, ah that if there was the team that we had in like 2022, going back to like 2017-18 season, and you know, when Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino were still playing for us, I think we'd be at least 15 points clear at the moment, because they were that good. They they were, ah that's the team we had, I think,

barring the Sudeturians, I think that was the best team in Premier League history that we had in that period. And I don't think that that's me being delusional. I mean, we lost we lost it by one point on two occasions, and we only lost once all season on one of those occasions. And that was against Manchester City at at the Etihad. And we played so well in that match. and So that that's that That's my take on this season. I think it's not us being absolutely brilliant. I think it is just the case of Arsenal and Manchester City having a bit of an off year. But ah regardless, I still do expect us to be Ipswich. ah However, it will be one of those games where I expect I wouldn't be shocked if Ipswich scored the first goal.

I know maybe you would, ah but I absolutely wouldn't because that is what's been happening recently. We've been letting in goals and then just going and dominating in the second half like we always do. um You can't say it's not entertaining, but you also can't say it's comfortable. So I'll probably go 3-1 to Liverpool. That seems like an Ipswich to score first. that's my ah that That's my prediction of the match.

do do you Do you think I have switched in school? I mean, is there one or well where one or one or best case, I think I'll go for 2-1. I think I think we will score. Yeah, I think we will. But um I agree. I think, you know, the Anfield kind of like roar in the second half and stuff might just be a bit too much for us to be able to to hang on to something. But you never know. As I say, if you have an off day, you know, we we just need we need a lot of luck to be able to get through that game. But um We'll see. We'll see. I'm sure McKenna's really been hammering them this week to try and like tighten up a bit. So i I would imagine we will be tighter than we have been for the last couple of games, for sure. Yeah.

teams always seem to And also, Liverpool always seem to bring the best out of teams, I've noticed, especially this season. you know Everyone really wants to go to Anfield and really um but make a name for themselves by scoring at Anfield.

um And I'm sure it will be a memorable day for Ipswich, the first time back at Anfield, like you mentioned, since they won back in 2099. Anyway, we're going to end the podcast there.

ah ah we I just want to mention the fact that the the reason I said the late 90s weren't that good is because Manchester United were dominating And they also won the Champions League in 99, you know, sick of hearing about it. But we are going to end it there. ah Join us again tomorrow as well as we will continue to preview the Ipswich game further. And Richard, thank you very much for joining me for today's episode.
