Impact of 4-0 Defeat to Newcastle

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Ipswich, brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. and it's The Christmas spirit's been dampened a bit by that result on Saturday afternoon, a 4-0 defeat at home to Newcastle. Depressing way to enter the festive period, where we have to admit. So depressing, in fact, that I don't think we've got any of the other lads here to pick the bones out of with me. Obviously, hit them too hard.
00:00:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've all got their fun Christmas plans, hopefully it's not ruined it too much. But I am here to take you through the game as much as I'm sure we all want to avoid reliving it, but unfortunately that is my job for today to go back through. And to be honest, there's a lot to go through, but the bottom line is Newcastle are just too good. there There's ways to spin around there, there was mistakes in there, there was opportunities, but we've competed very well in the Premier League this season.
00:01:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
but This is one of the few occasions where the quality difference has shown. And there's a variety of reasons for that, which I'll try and... Okay, I'll share my thoughts on throughout the course of today's show. So, usual Monday reaction format today. I'll share my general thoughts, part one. I'll dive into the chances in part two, and then we'll look at the context of what this means for post-Christmas and the rest of the season, given the other results that have taken place this weekend. but I'll get straight into it then. So my thoughts on the game, I think I've just summed it up fairly well there. It was effectively men against boys, to be honest. state It was something we feared could happen. We were very positive coming into the game. We thought that would work well in our favor. Newcastle having a game on Wednesday night, maybe a bit tired, decent journey for them, all these things that you never know could have could have played a part. We were quite confident, but we were also very aware that if they turned up,
00:02:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
If they played at a high pace, they took ah ah continued on their form in front of goal. It was going to be a very, very tough and long day. And that's exactly what it was in the end. We knew they had the quality. I mean,

Key Players: Isaac and Murphy

00:02:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
again, two players we picked out in the week, Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isaac. This completely ran the show and what a player he is, by the way, Isaac. It's not often you sort of have to and applaud a performance when and someone's come to Portland Road and done you over like that but he was brilliant and what a player he is. He's close control on the ball for such a tall lad and his finishing ability as well. He was just an absolute monster and and so we talk about the quality jumping up between promotions. He was e one of the first times
00:02:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've looked out of depth trying to handle a striker and we've come up against likes of Erling Harland and people like that already this season who didn't. And that's probably the only other time we have looked out of depth, I'd say. And in fairness, they

Upcoming Challenges: Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham

00:03:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
are the two best strikers in the league, in my opinion, Isaac and Harland. And they're the two players that have, say, both scored a hat trick against us and both, the only two strikers I can remember that really run our defensive racket.
00:03:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
it been a lot more sort of issues from out wide most of the time that say sometimes you just have to accept you've been beaten by the better team and a better player in this case with EZAC and we just got to sort of take it on the chin luckily it is Christmas we can move past it but and we we'll go again but the games don't get any easier now this is we had a run of four tough games that's the first one out of the way and it hasn't gone very well we've got Arsenal after Christmas Chelsea to round off the year and then Fulham away, which is not a very nice place to go Craven Cottage. They're a good side

Team's Struggles and January Transfer Needs

00:03:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fulham, they're doing well this season, but with any luck, maybe they'll have a couple of bad results over Christmas and we can catch them in a moment there. But back to Newcastle, I thought, like I say, Newcastle were quality there. The early goal obviously just took any game plan out of the window, which set it up for what it was meant to be.
00:04:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think the main reason why we struggled was we just missed a lap. What was it? I think it was two shots on target in total, neither of them testing the goal. We'd never looked to threaten on the break. The physicality was missed so much. We spoke about it in the week, what he gives there, that we haven't really got anyone else to go and fill that gap, holding the ball up, wrestling the center backs, causing problems. that There was no replacement for that whatsoever. and if it If there was a game to add that a striker is needed in January, this was it. Because if Dallap was worried before, if Dallap gets injured, we're in big trouble in the attacking department. And I think this has just confirmed that theory with the way this game is played out. So there's just no threat on the counter. Just smashing the ball up that you would do. Dallap might sort of go and compete who hold it up, have players run off him, try and build the attacks. Just wasn't the same.
00:05:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
with Smolik's being up there, or Chaplin, whoever was filling in that role at the time. Trying to maintain the ball, it wasn't working. Thank God, it was just a one game suspension, and just hope it's not a month long injury or something if next time, if to have asked to miss a game, that a striker is needed if we didn't already know that. So Dabravka had, I think it was two shots on target we had, didn't have a save to make. One of them was broad head right at the end of the game, near enough stoppage time, comfortable save, that Ravka was a spectator, we just offered nothing going forward and surely it has the big change was not having Dilap which has to have been the key factor as much of the struggle in front of goal before this game as well since stats are there but it was really poor and a bit toothless and yeah Dilap, we missed Dilap massively and

Goalkeeper Issues and Defensive Struggles

00:06:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
maybe if we did have Dilap or we were able to deal with that
00:06:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
his missing and presence but better than we did. We might have maybe kept the score line. We could have got one back or ourselves to before the score line got out of hand, but I don't know. It wasn't an ideal game. Muric had a poor, gave no, it was his fifth error leading to goal now this season, what was it? 17, 18 games, 17, I think, that five errors leading to goal in that time that I think it's time we have to have a serious conversation about either a goalkeeper in January or bringing Walton back in because he's just not cut out for it. He's not a bad goalkeeper, Miraich. I'll stand by that. He's a decent keeper in there. He's just not cut out for this level. The warning signs were there with Burnley last year. He made some bad mistakes, cost him points, and so it was another bad mistake good in this game, and say five errors to goal. They're just over one in three games given a goal away. It's not the level you can be at
00:07:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
particularly at any point, but particularly when every point matters down the bottom. There's a serious conversation to be had there as we are 10 days or so away from the January window opening up, because I'm not sure Walton would step up and do, he looks for the answer you've got. He can't against Liverpool in fairness, but he hasn't been a regular starter since league one, whether that be through injury or just because of the former flag, he hasn't had a run on the team.
00:07:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
to jump to divisions and begin regular starter again. I'm not sure he's the right answer either. So I do think that that's an area to look at in January, but we'll see how that plays out. And then just the one final kick on what was an all round depressing afternoon really is that Morsy's been on that tightrope for probably about five games now, to be honest. He's done very well not to last this long without getting a ban, but that elusive fifth yellow card has finally caught up with him.
00:08:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we now have to head off to the Emirates on the 27th without our skipper, which is not say i spen coming in off the back of a defeat like this. High score in one.

Reflecting on Missed Opportunities and Errors

00:08:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very key man in the midfield. Phillips has looked incredibly inconsistent and quite poor in some of the games he's played. It's not good omens going into the trip to the Emirates, but hopefully we can react better, use this game as a most motivation to come back and stand out performance. I've been dropping points recently, Arsenal, so we've got to give something back. ah ah It needs to be a lot better than it was on Saturday because, as I say, you can boil it down to the fact of it hasn't happened often last season or this season where we've just been comfortably second best and a team's come and made us look out of our depth in the division we're in, but that is what happened on Saturday. Newcastle were just the quality difference
00:09:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
was up there so that and probably going to the 80 had a second game in the season is probably the only two times I could honestly say we've been completely outplayed and struggled to compete so it's a rare occurrence but I have to see it can bounce back going forward and I'm gonna have a quick break now to hear from one of the sponsors but when I come back I'll be diving through the key chances of game and see where it all went wrong
00:10:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I am back for part two of today's Match Reaction Monday on Daily Ipswich. So let's run through how the game played out then. Obviously I have my thoughts on it, but we'll go right in. 26 seconds on the clock. Long ball forward from Fabian Schur, Jacob Murphy in behind. Ball comes across the box, initially cleared by Mozzie out to Isaac, who fires it in. Linesman flag goes up. We think we've got away with it. About a minute and a half, two minutes from VAR.
00:10:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
finds out he was just onside Murphy despite what the ironsman's initial thoughts on the pitch and there we are one nil down inside the opening minute the worst possible start in a game like this we feared Newcastle's pace and quality if they were on it from from minute one they were on it from minute one scored straight away and it's something we spoke about it's a point I raised pretty enough every week on when we do these crossover episodes with the teams and on our own previews that We know Davis likes to get forward. That leaves space in behind if teams can execute that properly. And so 20 seconds in, kickoff is taken. Davis runs up to try and yeah work the way from the attack. Go and press high. And Murphy spins straight into the pocket. Cher finds him well. Burgess has to come across. It leaves opens up the space in the middle. Mozzi, to be fair to him, tracks the run-off wheel up really well to get a touch on it and then he's act on it. Arriving late. And it's a brilliant finish from him.
00:11:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
The hit it down into the ground just makes it things stupidly hard for Muric to be able to get, to be able to claw it out. So you you could maybe, you question if he's got a hand on it, could he have saved it? But for me, I think it's just the finish. Really intelligent for me. He's mentioned him in part one, top, top player, his finishing ability is unbelievable. So the awareness, smack that down into the ground, knowing that's going to bounce back up and cause all sorts of problems for the goalkeeper who is also looking at it between two players as well.
00:12:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
though I'm sure we'll get on to Miurich criticism later on, but on that one on that occasion, I'm going good finish rather than poor goalkeeping and credit sale. I'll give the

Analyzing Key Goals and Playing Style

00:12:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
credit to Wesak and say it was a poor start, but it's all come from... We know that danger is there in behind Davis if we get caught too high and it happened 20 odd seconds in, which was the worst possible start. and To be honest, from that point, we were lucky the score stayed at 1-0 for as long as it did, because it wasn't too long afterwards.
00:12:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Murphy got in behind that gap behind Davis again, broke into the box, caught got to the bar line, dinged it up in the air, and Gordon, three header from eight yards, luckily down into the floor again, this time over the bar. And to be credit to Harry Clark, he got he got back enough to put him off a little bit, stopped him getting the clean contact he wanted, which was somewhat centered down into the ground in the end. So good recovery from Clark, but a big, big let off to stop it being 2-0 much earlier on. and you were hoping that would be the wake-up call really and it wasn't because so there should have been two up again Newcastle. I can't remember who it was. now Someone gave it away cheaply in the middle of the park. Fantastic ball from Murphy straight through the middle. EZAC one-on-one. I've praised his finish a bit. He'd think, you know, you're going to have the outcome on this occasion. He got it wrong. Miurich made the save and he thought maybe that one was a lifeline that that was all inside
00:13:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
what, 20 minutes? Something like that? Or it could have been 3-0 down very, very easily. And it was a concerning start. You were sort of waiting what was going to be the warning sign that sparked us back in the gear, but it didn't happen in the end. they so They just saw some very good goals, Newcastle, to their credit. So so the first one's a brilliant finish. And we're talking about brilliant finishes. The second one from Murphy. They had three players between him and and when the goal, which put his foot straight through it, underside the bar. Muric, no chance. and Again, that's one of them. You just got to give credit to the attacker on that occasion. It's a frustrating one, but we were hanging on for a while and it it took a fantastic goal to finally double Newcastle's advantage. And again, I can't dig anyone out for that one as much. as You sort of want to place blame on goals when you've had the ah heavy defeat like this, but that's just absolutely top draw from Murphy and him and Isaac.
00:14:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
we we We highlighted them going into the game for a reason. They're on great form at the moment, both hitting hitting their strides. We get into the festive period and they ran the show, didn't they? It was a combination for the fourth goal, which I'll get to in a little while. It was its unbelievable from both of them. Some finish and Murphy just rifled it in off the bar. So I think there's three players. He has to work it in round as well to stop. He's got to avoid all three of them at different points of the goal and Muric as well. and say credit to him. And then you think at that point, the mindset's then got to be tighten the ship, get in at two, make sure it's not any worse at half time. If you can nick one great, but the important thing is don't concede a third goal before half time. And then we conceded a third goal before half time. And it was an absolute gift of a goal. Simple ball from O'Shea, back to Muric. Don't know what he's doing. the
00:15:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like I said, the mindset at that point is you've got to be doing everything to make sure you keep it at two before half time. You absolutely cannot concede a third ad because that is well and truly game over. He just wasted his time on the ball. He could, it could, it lays back to him. me He could take a touch and clear it. He just sort of leaves it there. I don't know what what's going through his head. The sort of thing we'd seen Southampton do week after week and ended up costing Russell Hartnett his job. It's just,
00:15:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Every ever there's a be session for everybody to play out from the back now, and it does get good results We do it very well most of the time, but sometimes just put your foot through the ball And this is one of those occasions yep You do not wise wise the goal is your goalkeeper your two nil down Shouldn't I say not long before half-time? He keeps got the ball at his feet in his six yard box Strikas coming is it's got someone coming to put a bit of pressure on him just lever it up the other end of the pitch and That's not the time to be clever and try and play out from the back, regardless of if it normally works and that's how you play football. Koosto's coming, he's made himself the option. He thought he's made himself the option, I should say. Muhrich gives it to him. Gimmerer's pounces. An easy act from his pressure on Muhrich. Initially he's then in the perfect place to just roll it in the net. 3-0 game over. Gift well and truly received from Newcastle. They've made the most of it. and
00:16:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
At that point, the game was well and truly dead. It's just, I don't understand it. We've spoke about Mureich a lot. I'm going to say four errors leading to goal coming into this game. There's a bit of blame on Koiste as well. Don't get me wrong. It's not all Mureich because he's come in due to the system. Obviously the system we play, we normally very good at playing out from the back. We get it. We do it nine times out of 10 and it works fine. That is the risk of the system. The one time it goes wrong, you're probably going to concede and he's come in.
00:17:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whether he's totally going to know, he's got Gimara's breathing down his neck and he's dropped in the usual position. he said He's stuck his arms out to say, so go on, give me the ball. And so it's not, hard it's not all on Mureich, but so he saw, he had, effectively he has passed a player who wanted the ball. So it's not a hundred percent him, but just put your foot through it. Don't let it get to that point where you've taken the touch and waited for a while. And then he comes in, it's almost bailed him out there. Cause he's took that touch and you know you can see he's actually coming and he's like, all right, I need a pass now.
00:17:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he spotted that and go, yep, that'll do. po And he's pounced on it. But I don't get it. i so I've said it a lot about Southampton. I don't understand it sometimes. and So obviously, it's good to play out from the back. I don't doubt McKenna's football at all. But you've just got to have that individual intelligence sometimes, is that assess the situation, like Muric there, like I said, two minutes or so away from halftime.
00:18:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
absolutely cannot come afford to see the number one. just put Just get it up the pitch. Don't have the ball in and around the penalty area when you're trying to hold on and trying to keep the score down like that going into half time because that was game over. That was a turn. That second half was just damage it was damage control at that point. we couldn't even There's no point even trying to go and get a point out of the game because you know it wasn't going to happen. It's just a silly, silly, silly goal to give away and it's something sort of mistakes we've made too many of this season unfortunately and another one for the list and then second half wasn't as eventful as the first we sort of Newcastle happy to take a back foot a bit no and they'd run the game already really we just sort of often continue to offer nothing up the other end of the pitch and then gimmerated the post and another chance in the second half three header good ball in from what i remember difficult so difficult header to be fair to him i'm not going to say he should have scored but
00:19:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Probably should have hit the target at least. Comes off of the post we got away with that one. And then I've I've gone down the route today. not I don't want to dig people out too much. Sometimes you've just got to applaud the opposition. And Newcastle's fourth goal was just brilliant. here Like I said, the class difference there to see. Murphy in the build up, swarming players around him, done so well, made hard of it. Backhill to Isaac. And I mentioned his close control.
00:19:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
earlier on, it's unbelievable for so someone of that frame to be so tight, he's got the so tight on the ball, never seems to lose it. So again, squarmer players around, a little bit of footwork and just calmly slots it away. Like I said, it's just a top, top goal and nothing we could have really done about it really. It

Acknowledging Newcastle's Skill

00:19:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
wasn't defended badly at all. It was just a couple of, and two players full of confidence, bang on for them, who knew what to do in the right situation combined.
00:19:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
and made a fourth goal. That was what it came down to. and so That moment i was just but extra quality made that fourth goal, and that was a difference all day. The extra quality Newcastle had, and we met ah we missed Arsenal in Dilap at the other end of the pitch, who's probably the only player. Dilap and Dave was the only two from our team that would compete at Newcastle's level.
00:20:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's just, that was what it was at the end of the day, the quality of players on the pitch. It's one of the few times we have looked, we have looked out of our depth in the Premier League. And you can see it. So situations like that fourth goal, that that's what, that's what we lack and why we are down where we are in the tables, because who sort of they think of who that combination there would we score that goal where someone gets past a couple of players, clever little back heel into.
00:20:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
somebody else who works it onto the foot and across their feet, opens up the charts and slots it away. We what we just don't, I don't think we would score a goal like that. We just need two moments of quality from top tier players. That's what we lack a lot of the time. We've got the potential to do it. Definitely. I could see, I could see Hutchinson and Dilaptor and that combination, but we don't show it often at all. And

Future Challenges and Relegation Battle

00:21:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
that was how that was a difference on the day, but it wasn't to be that we can't dwell on it.
00:21:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
We need to look forward, and once we've had a quick word from one of our sponsors, ill we'll discuss what this means for the wider relegation battle in the Premier League.
00:21:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And welcome back for the final part of today's daily Ipswich. So what does this is a tough result take, but what does it mean going forward now? Because we're approaching the halfway point of the season now, which is where things really start to get serious. And I mentioned earlier, we've got tough runner games coming up. So <unk> we've dropped down to 19th in the table now on goal difference because Wolves went to the king power and thumped Leicester in Pereira's first game in charge, which was it was fairly common. We know Leicester... I've never changed my opinion from the start of the season that Leicester will be one of the three to go down. Got a little worried for a while, admittedly, of those early results of un-mysteroid, but I've always thought Leicester, they're sitting higher than where they where they deserve to be, really, and where where I thought they would end up. And they're starting to come crashing back down right in the middle of the scrap again.
00:22:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're conceding far too many shots in these games, even the ones they were getting results in. When you leak in that many shots in the games, you're asking for trouble. And when your number one goalkeeper is injured, who has been bailing you out on previous games, then that's why the golf series saw it. It was 1-0 when Hermanson was on the pitch last week against Newcastle. Ward came on at half time, finished 4-0, walling goal again, and I've lost 3-0 to Wolves now They're leaking shots and they now haven't got a goalkeeper good enough to bail them out of that situation more times than he doesn't. So, less that of a team to target now, I think, in terms of what we're looking at. Wolves are still level on points with Wolves. Just goal difference separates that apart, they're still right there. Everton, West Ham and Southampton all got some very well-earned points this weekend. So, Neil-Neil Everton against Chelsea, second week in a row, they've taken points off a title contender.
00:23:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
who's credited them. I think they're they're slowly, say point by point every week, they're pulling themselves out of the scrap. And I don't think it's long before we have to stop including Everton in these conversations, to be honest, the way they're going. I think they'll be, by the end of January, I think they'll be relatively safe the way they're going. We know Deitch is experienced in these battles and say West Ham seem to be hitting a bit of a run of form. So again, they sort of pulling themselves out slowly. Still think Southampton are buried, but We've got to start picking up points because, say, Palace getting comprehensively beaten by Arsenal helped as well because, like I said, I keep expecting Palace to just hit run a run of form and drag themselves out, over but it hasn't happened yet. So there is a serious possibility they're still there. Come the end of the season, we'll see, but I'm still i'm still fairly confident. Let's say this results in isolation, but we've got to go and shock somebody in the next three games. We can't afford to just
00:24:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
take three defeats on this level now against Arsenal, Chelsea and Fulham in the next three. Because ah ah teams are teams the other teams down there are picking points up somewhat consistently now. Like I say, Everton and West Ham, they won't like it they're putting little runs together, making themselves fairly difficult to beat. Wolves, we'll see what happens with the new manager bounds for them. Southampton have got a new manager now as well. Closed the gap down by another point this weekend. Still six adrift of us and Wolves.
00:25:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, it's getting, it's getting interesting down there now. And we've got, we've got a tough run of fixtures at the wrong sort of time. Now, I think really that we'll see how things play out, but it was a bad week, a bad weekend in terms of our own result and what happened around us to say own palace, the only other team, palace and Leicester. So the only other ones to lose this weekend, a lot of other teams getting more points on the board. So it was.
00:25:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great result against them last week for us. It felt massive at the time. They've got the points back in a week. So that's how tight it is down there. And we've got to start picking results up. As tough as the fixtures are coming, I think if we walk away from the next three, it was zero points, even though everyone expects us to. If we do, we might see that gap start to go. So we're getting to the positions now where we've got to start shocking people.
00:26:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
on I'm using that exact line because that's what I said just before we beat Spurs. I said, we got to go and shock somebody and we beat Spurs that weekend. So I'm hoping that's a, that's a good omen and sets it up, but we will see how it plays out because we cannot afford the game to the Emirates. I worry about where that one goes. Arsenal. Well, they thought, I thought they were struggling in the last few games recently. Then they've smashed Palace twice in a week. So once they smash the narrow game in the cup, but they put eight goals away in a week.
00:26:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And after I was thinking they were struggling to score goals and maybe we thought that was good timing for us going there. We're now going there, so I could say Palace have given them their goal score from form back at the two games this week. So we'll see how that plays out next week, but we have to go and shock somebody now. We need to get some more points on the board. You don't want to be going going into January with a gap there, ah've got a bigger gap than what we've got at the moment.
