Introduction and Eventful Week

00:00:01
Speaker
This is the Garage Avenger Podcast.
00:00:13
Speaker
Yeah, here we are for another week, Kieran. Another week. An exciting week. An exciting week. Very exciting week indeed. Now, intro this morning, just know, welcome to the Garage Avenger Podcast.
00:00:28
Speaker
I decided everyone's probably heard it a million times, so let's just get straight into it, Kieran. Yeah, six listeners have heard it every single time. Exactly.
00:00:40
Speaker
So, bro, what's been happening? Dude, it's been a crazy week. And it's just been high emotions. High emotions?
00:00:52
Speaker
Yeah, high emotions. Yeah. Excitement, stress, not sleeping very well, a bunch of other stuff basically.
00:01:04
Speaker
um And it all started on Thursday evening. Do tell. What happened?
00:01:14
Speaker
I could have told you she was pregnant again. Wouldn't that be be? There wouldn't be excitement, Kieran, if that was her. Pure terror. My hair is all gone.

Exciting Opportunity with Toyota

00:01:29
Speaker
i get i get a call from my contact at Toyota.
00:01:34
Speaker
yeah He basically says, very quick, pleasantries, and then gets straight to the point. He's like, I'm calling you because I need to know if you can build Ford and a Hyundai by January.
00:01:52
Speaker
Yeah. And of course, i didn't know what to say. Like, my immediate answer wanted to be, no fucking way. Are you kidding me? And then the other side of me is like, wow.
00:02:04
Speaker
Okay, tell me more. So the World Rally Championship promoter, has been talking with this guy, obviously, that's you know involved with the marketing department in Toyota.
00:02:16
Speaker
yeah I think, to be honest, maybe he's been flexing or something. yeah or you know Something's been happening anyway. he's he Well, actually, now that I think about it very clearly, that's exactly how this come up.
00:02:30
Speaker
So he's been trying to get approval for me and the car that I'm building to get into Monte Carlo. In 2026, January 2026. Yeah, yeah.
00:02:44
Speaker
So he's been discussions with that and it's looking really, really positive for that to actually happen. That's awesome. I mean, like let's just get into that for a little bit.
00:02:58
Speaker
So the idea is that he will travel we will travel down to Monte Carlo for a week and which is a city in Monaco.
00:03:11
Speaker
And we're going to be based there. My car is going to be used as like a PR, ah
00:03:22
Speaker
PR slut. I want to say, because it feels like we're going to a lot of different places to film things. We're going to famous rally stages to film things.
00:03:36
Speaker
Um, There's a bunch of stuff that's going to happen. For example, the car ah is we've talked about, or he talked about the car being ah in front of the Monte Carlo Casino, which is where all the cars start.
00:03:52
Speaker
The rally has a bunch of other stuff sort of involved in it all. And yeah, just so exciting to sort of even just work out what this is going to be.
00:04:06
Speaker
And then he tells me We're planning to have you drive the harbour stage, which is where they also run the Formula One track. Yeah, like the famous Formula One track,
00:04:19
Speaker
You're going to drive that in your car on live TV.
00:04:27
Speaker
What, is it like clown car at the end of the end of the race? Like what? what I don't know. likes But that's what he's saying that they're trying to organize. And I'm like, I'm flipping out.
00:04:40
Speaker
And then I'm also flipping out about the the question he first launched, was which was, can you build a Hyundai and a Ford as well?

Challenges and Solutions in Car Building

00:04:51
Speaker
Yeah.
00:04:52
Speaker
And, you know, as we get back to that question, i didn't say no. so That night, I lost the last thing. Say what?
00:05:05
Speaker
Well, this is the thing, right? the The card is taking you, what, fucking the better part of six months now? Nine months.
00:05:17
Speaker
You're going to churn out two more. Well, actually three more. because You've got to remake the... I got to remake the Toyota because they want to keep them, right? And I want to keep my Toyota.
00:05:30
Speaker
Right, okay. I don't want to sell it. I want to keep it because I've worked so hard on it. And you know and if they've got the money, then screw it. you know screw it ah Plus, I also think they'd want something that's not like a hack prototype with bad used parts and things like that. so yeah Yeah, fair enough. yeah Anyways, so I lost a lot of sleep on after that phone call.
00:05:58
Speaker
I can imagine. Because I started just thinking and leaning into, can I even do this? like How would I do this? so I took a trip to Thomas, who's been helping me 3D print, and You know, we ah we sat down together and in the end he just said, you have to do this, Justin.
00:06:18
Speaker
You have to try to do this because this is an opportunity you you won't get ever again. Yeah, right. You always think, what if? o So you at least have to put in a quote and see if they accept it.
00:06:36
Speaker
And so i used... ah Yeah, the better part of Friday and then thinking it through on Saturday and Sunday, then reaching out to a bunch of other companies that may be able to help us. Yeah.
00:06:54
Speaker
Thomas reached out to a couple of people he knew ah to see if we can get like a print farm to print the parts for us. Yeah. So it's a quicker turnaround time. There's a bunch of just a huge amount of work went into it. So I ended up putting together a ah quote to give to WRC promoter.
00:07:16
Speaker
And I won't tell you guys how much it was, but it was sort ridiculous amount of money.
00:07:22
Speaker
And have you had back from minute? No. No. I sent it yesterday, so I can't expect much. No. yeah But, yeah, I mean, that's been the biggest thing.
00:07:34
Speaker
It's been crazy to even work out the small details, such as, you know, I don't want to have 3D printed cars. like I just think they're super weak and they'll crack. and I'm nearly certain my Toyota will break apart, basically.
00:07:55
Speaker
Yeah. so What I'm thinking with regards to this is I'm going to make fiberglass molds and then I can like mold new bodies together When I need.
00:08:13
Speaker
So if my my my ah 3D printed version gets broken and and shitty, right? Then I can just make a fiberglass version put it on top and then I've got a better car.
00:08:29
Speaker
Yeah, right. And a lighter car too because, you know, the 3D printed version weighs like 50 odd kilos. Yeah. So we'd be saving a lot of weight there and yeah.
00:08:42
Speaker
it's just such a

Emotional and Financial Impact

00:08:44
Speaker
big thing. This is the, I got really emotional on Sunday when I was, um, so we, we do ice bathing and the season sort of started, even though it's not super cold yet.
00:08:55
Speaker
And, so you know, we went down with our friends and, and had dip. And then after we take coffee and I usually have a chat and things. Uh, I, I kind of shared what, what was going on and,
00:09:08
Speaker
the the gravitas of it all, you know, like just knowing that I'm like really struggling for money now. I've spent so much money that I don't have on this crazy idea.
00:09:22
Speaker
and even if they don't come back and say, yeah we'll pay you for that ridiculous amount of money to build the cars. m Like the fact that I could even quote for them,
00:09:37
Speaker
is just It was super emotional. i just I felt like I've been working my ass off for the last, realistically, five years. yeah But like if you think about my whole journey and how I pivoted towards building things, it's been a 10-year journey.
00:09:56
Speaker
And you know to turn around and feel like potentially I could get a payday that would change our lives, it's really, really big.
00:10:08
Speaker
It feels really, really big. So yeah, we were sitting there, you know, sharing and then I got to share it. I just couldn't, I couldn't hold back the tears. I just felt so grateful and so excited. And then, you know,
00:10:25
Speaker
I don't know what else I felt, but it just all came out and I sat there bloody crying ah just because of it all, the gravitas of it all, as you say.
00:10:38
Speaker
Yeah, I think too, like the the feeling of, I guess, relief after all.
00:10:50
Speaker
It's not even, I guess like it's not relief really, but like, that just that the 10 years of working towards something is culminating towards something that that could could just could be a defining moment in your life. 100%. Yeah, I really feel like it could be that. And that was really cool to feel because it has been a grind. you know like I have to say, if it wasn't for my wife,
00:11:24
Speaker
I wouldn't have the opportunity to do what I'm doing. you know Literally today, I'm out there. um I'm fixing the go-kart because there's some problems with the but spark plug and and the carburetor.
00:11:42
Speaker
friend of ours came over and helped me with that. And she's happy. she She just wants me to complete it. She knows, she understands the
00:11:58
Speaker
the importance of me being able to do this for my own ah enjoyment, which, you know, happiness, I guess you'd say as well.
00:12:10
Speaker
ah she says She said to a bunch of guys that came over to visit, know, she said, happy husband, happy life. And that's normally the opposite way around, right? Right, yeah.
00:12:23
Speaker
But she she said that to to my friends because she knows it's kind of true, right? you When we as men have some drive and passion for something and we as we get supported by our other half,
00:12:39
Speaker
yeah the world is our oyster. We can do anything. And that's what I feel like. I feel like because I have the support of Kristen, I can do this. I can do anything.
00:12:51
Speaker
As long as... I mean, she is a voice of reason too. Don't get me wrong. She says things where she needs to. Yeah. But most of the time, she's supportive.
00:13:04
Speaker
So... yeah I don't know what else to say, but it's just been a really, really emotional week. And then today we fixed the go-kart.
00:13:17
Speaker
I changed the rear brakes. I wasn't happy with them.

Go-Kart Adventures and Support System

00:13:20
Speaker
So I changed the parts on the rear brakes and we got it running. I took it for a spin and it's so First time I properly like stretched its legs because i yeah I haven't really felt confident to go take it like any further than our little gravel driveway. Yeah. um But I decided I was going to take it out on the street and around the neighborhood just for a little quick little blat.
00:13:45
Speaker
Yeah. And oh, my God, it's fun. And it's so fast. It's fast. Yeah. fast It's brutal. Your head snaps every time you change your gears.
00:13:58
Speaker
you know I don't know how fast I was going, but I would dare say like over 100 kilometers an hour on that little 200, 300 meter stretch.
00:14:11
Speaker
It's just, it's so crazy fast. It's just so good. And I i am ah had doubts for a long time, like, oh, is it too much?
00:14:24
Speaker
Or is it silly that it's shifter cart? And then, you know, it's like, why don't just keep it simple? Just have like a standard, you know, one gear sort engine and keep it at that.
00:14:35
Speaker
But I am so glad that i put that engine in there and we used that engine for this project. It is so fun. Do you think your welds are going to help?
00:14:45
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:47
Speaker
I think so. They'll be right. I put enough, you know, I put enough wells. I just added more, you know. yeah Oh, Justin, before I forget, I put a beer in the freezer to cool down for this podcast and I and i don't want to forget it and just fucking explode everywhere. So I'll be back in two seconds.
00:15:08
Speaker
No one wants frozen beer. No, That's for sure.
00:15:13
Speaker
So whilst Kieran's gone, you know, I'll just continue my story and maybe slag him off a little bit. ah And then he'll be none the wiser because he doesn't even edit this podcast.
00:15:25
Speaker
So, no I can't say anything bad for him.
00:15:30
Speaker
Ooh, ooh, it's not frozen. Good. Saved. Saved. Ooh. What is it? My, I have one.
00:15:43
Speaker
Nolan's pills. Really? It looks like so fancy in that bottle. Yeah, it's the, I think it's like the export version. I don't know what the, yeah? Yeah, okay.
00:15:55
Speaker
It's the 4.7 version. And this is like the closest you'll get to like a ah like an Australian style lager.
00:16:07
Speaker
Yeah. With a twist top and everything. ah Fancy.
00:16:16
Speaker
Yep. That's a multi lager. You don't want to know what I'm drinking.
00:16:24
Speaker
Tell me. It's, ah let's just say it's pink.
00:16:31
Speaker
Ooh, grapefruit juice.
00:16:36
Speaker
It is alcoholic though. Oh, alcoholic grapefruit juice?
00:16:42
Speaker
No, I reached in the fridge. There was no beer. Well, lied. There was a beer. There was a Nordic Triple in there. I just figured that wasn't worth opening summer podcast. Get back in the house blind.
00:16:58
Speaker
and That being said, had to say I opened a bottle of that myself the other day. and I was just like, why Why is this so hard to sell?
00:17:09
Speaker
It's such a great beer. I don't know why it's not flying off the shelf.
00:17:15
Speaker
Honestly. but i think it's just marketing, Kieran. You've just got to find a way to market it to the right people. Damn you, Norway. Anyway, yep.
00:17:26
Speaker
So continue. you you drug the You tried the cart. it fucking You changed your underpants afterwards. No, that's a great thing about it. i didn't change my underpants.
00:17:38
Speaker
it it Actually, this time when I stretched it out, it felt safer than before. Mm-hmm. So that's- Is that because you weren't driving on a dirt road on your driveway? Yeah, maybe.
00:17:52
Speaker
but then also, yeah and I had also time to brake, right? Yeah, okay. Like space to brake. And also maybe because I have this cage around me now. Yeah, okay. do Damn it. I think there's a- I remember when I used to rally, right? The difference between me driving my street car and me driving my rally car is was night and day.
00:18:16
Speaker
Yeah, right. Because you felt so safe and secure in that car with the cage around you. You went crazy. You did things you'd never do in a normal street car.
00:18:29
Speaker
Right. Because you felt safer. and And I think it's the same for this. like ah But it it felt really planted. it even does a burnout like on the like iki I slid and drifted on the asphalt.
00:18:45
Speaker
So it's got enough power that you basically do burnout on the asphalt, which is amazing, um especially when it's in the power band. It's just so fun. Yeah.
00:18:58
Speaker
you know I drove it twice, up, but back and forth, you know just because I didn't want to completely piss my neighbors off. Because it's noisy, man. It's loud. It's real loud.
00:19:11
Speaker
m um So, yeah. I mean, I just feel really good about it generally, that it's it just feels like it's nearing completion.
00:19:23
Speaker
They also went and tried to get quotes for ah for the livery to be put on. The what? The livery. What's livery?
00:19:34
Speaker
Yeah, the stickers and the the logos and all that sort of stuff. Yeah. So that's another thing that they told me on Thursday night.
00:19:47
Speaker
is that they want the car to look exactly like the 2026 model livery, not the car that I'm building, which has the 2024 livery on it.
00:20:00
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. so
00:20:05
Speaker
it looks like Toyota is going to pay for it to be wrapped exactly like they want it. Nice. And...
00:20:16
Speaker
What they sent me, like I'm not allowed to share it with anybody, but it looks amazing. like It looks way better than I i could have made it look. before. like It's just going to be really great. so I'm really looking forward to that and seeing what happens with that.
00:20:32
Speaker
I'm shitting myself if ah the WRC promoter comes back and says, yes, we'll have three cars. Thank you. That is the reality of this. I'm going to drop everything. just this This Toyota and to a guy, call him and ah i'm going to call him Toyota Gunther.
00:20:57
Speaker
Yeah. And he, he probably, i imagine he was probably like, oh, we want to get this car on, on the Monaco. And then like, well, it's just a Toyota. You've got to have all the other cars. got to be fair to everyone else.
00:21:10
Speaker
I imagine that's what the conversation went like. Maybe, or maybe they're like, oh, really cool idea. wonder if we can get also a Ford and a Hyundai and do the same thing. Like, you know, that that's that's part of it.
00:21:24
Speaker
But then the question is- Who's going to drive the other cars? I know. That's the thing. Like, if I get to drive- ah The Toyota, for example, like who's going to drive the other cars? Do i bring my friends to drive? Sign up to top tier Patreon for your chance. really love it. That would be so cool.
00:21:48
Speaker
Go in the drawer. Certainly, Dustin gets a massive uptick. Everyone's a fucking sidekick. Well, yeah, wouldn't that be amazing, actually, if you think about it?
00:21:59
Speaker
o Like, not that I would do that, but like more the fact of like bringing a patron. Like giving them the chance to drive on in Monaco.
00:22:11
Speaker
Like what ah what an amazing opportunity that could have been. hate them like Especially they're into that kind of thing. m But ah whilst we're there, Kieran, we might as well shout them out.
00:22:24
Speaker
yeah So thank you to Thomas Buckner, Mark Foster, Janis Kelms, Ole Skitren, Thomas Angel, Arthur Midgard, the Swedish maker, Mark Jones,
00:22:37
Speaker
Anders Abrahamsen Stin Suhus. Why are you not there, Kieran? Have you stopped supporting me? Eh? No. Maybe just, my bank account was empty and it didn't go through this month. It's been birthdays and things. I've been spending a lot of money.
00:22:55
Speaker
a yeah Massive shout out also to Sylvester, to Arna, to John Robinson and Thomas Smith-Stud for being mad dogs and supporting me on the highest tier. And thank you to everybody else that supports me.
00:23:16
Speaker
Whatever tier you're on. For example... youtube paraphernalia watching... but Why don't you use the word paraphernalia?
00:23:27
Speaker
YouTube stalker. Right. Level. yeah That all helps. um ah For example, Tala Booval.
00:23:38
Speaker
Tala Booval. Yeah. Yeah. Mad Dog. She's a vigil auntie. $5 a month. Supports me. Amazing. Sweet. Thanks, Carla.
00:23:50
Speaker
Yeah. So that's... That's my week. it's just been It feels like it's just been stress, but it's actually been super exciting. It feels like ah things are sort of coming to a head now. There's still all these little things that need to be done on the car, though, which I which i need to, unfortunately, need to press Thomas for.
00:24:12
Speaker
yeah We need to model the wheels as in the hubcaps. We also need to model... ah some window sills to go to to lock the windows in with um and some small other things like that.
00:24:29
Speaker
And once we've done that, then hopefully it'll just all come together pretty quickly.

High Stakes in Car Production

00:24:35
Speaker
yeah to be honest, if this contract's get signed for production of these three cars and my life will be changed.
00:24:44
Speaker
Uh, I will be working probably 12 to 15 hours a day, seven days a week for four months to get this, these cars delivered on time. So, um If this is the last podcast ah you see, then that's what's happened.
00:25:02
Speaker
There's no time for podcasts. Justin's working himself off to eventually get the chance to dive into a pool of cash like Scrooge McDuck. the but The funny thing is I don't think it'll be that much money for me in the end.
00:25:19
Speaker
No, by the time you got everything costs so much. Yeah, because they're all one-offs, you know, I'm not buying huge amounts. Of course, I'm buying more than one, but it's still very, very expensive. You know, I got a quote for molding the the car. Just to make the mold is going to cost 50,000 70,000 kronos. Yeah, yeah, right.
00:25:40
Speaker
yeah yeah right You know, so... a Plus MVA, right? So you look at it at 100K to make a mold. Then you've got to produce, like make the actual fiberglass bodies from that mold. And that's probably, I assume, probably 20,000 to 30,000, maybe more.
00:26:03
Speaker
Maybe more. Yeah. So, you know it adds up super quick. and Yeah. And, you know, I put a ridiculous number because I think, to be honest, I won't really have that much left because everything's so damn expensive in Norway.
00:26:21
Speaker
Yeah. You could say that that is giving me the shits, Kieran, that everything's so damn expensive, but it's not, Kieran. No, what what is giving the shits, Justin?

Navigating Sponsorship Scams

00:26:35
Speaker
Fake collab sponsorship scams. Ooh, okay. I've been getting a lot of them lately. What is a fake collab sponsorship scam?
00:26:47
Speaker
Tell me. So I get emails where they'll be like, hey, we saw your work. you know We want to work with you and collab with you for for our like products, right?
00:27:01
Speaker
Right. And it's some weird Amazon product. You click the link, it fucking downloads a virus onto your computer. You're screwed, right?
00:27:13
Speaker
ah Then there's the sponsorship ah sort of stuff as well with with these companies like saying that they're like ad agencies.
00:27:26
Speaker
And what they try to do is they try to to convince you that they're going to make all this money for you, right? And you know you you'd sign up with them, they're going to give you like all these ad reads and you're to make lots of money and blah, blah, blah.
00:27:43
Speaker
But what's hidden in the contract is the fact that you sign over your video rights to them. So they basically screw you. They take everything from you. You don't even get Google AdSense from YouTube, yeah earning money from YouTube.
00:28:01
Speaker
Everything goes to them and then you know maybe they give you something. I don't even know. don't just fucking take it. Yeah, exactly. you just it's so I've just noticed now since I've sort of hit you know around 20,000 subscribers, it's just gotten more.
00:28:18
Speaker
More. My inbox is just full of them. Oh, really? and they just And they don't let up either. They're like, oh, I didn't, you know, they'll send you follow-ups every day. Same guys over and over again.
00:28:29
Speaker
That's what you should do with AI too. Yeah. Yeah. so let's give me the shits. Rightly so, I believe.
00:28:40
Speaker
Yeah. Rightly so. I was trying to think about what my shits is for this week. I don't don't know if I have one, to be honest. Life is just hunky-dory.
00:28:55
Speaker
Was that last week you also said you didn't have anything that was giving you the shits, Gerard? No. Yeah, no. ah you know Actually, no. Do you know what's giving me the shits?
00:29:06
Speaker
Come on, Gerard. Let us hear
00:29:13
Speaker
People, you're and you're at my kid's birthday party on Sunday. Yeah. I specifically said, welcome everyone.
00:29:25
Speaker
There's a buffet, like food, find a seat, sit down next to someone you maybe haven't, you know, met before or talked as much before, you know, like trying to facilitate some kind of relationship building with family, friends, and the like.
00:29:43
Speaker
but And, ah I mean, ah foreigners its it and and a few other random friends were ah were picked up that and ran with it.
00:29:59
Speaker
Yeah. But, i mean, yourself just know, like you were talking to one of the guys here. I think that was just like a natural thing. That's something you would do anyway. Right.
00:30:10
Speaker
But
00:30:14
Speaker
Lynn's family came. And they didn't talk to anyone. They just sat in their own little group talking to themselves, the same people that they talked to every single time when they have these family gather gatherings.
00:30:29
Speaker
Not to mention that they didn't even, like, other than, like, saying happy birthday, Mackenzie, and then giving him a present, they had no interaction with my son whatsoever.
00:30:40
Speaker
He's the only reason they're there. In the first place. Like, no interaction. In fact, I spent most of the day most of that party, playing with the kids, keeping them entertained. yeah Thankfully, like, you know, Henry, your son, was great helping out with the boys and and doing some fun stuff for them.
00:31:03
Speaker
That was fantastic to see. Really lovely to see family doing that stuff together. and yeah, but it's like, the direct family members, you know, did nothing.
00:31:19
Speaker
Did nothing. Just fucking sat on their hands. Like, and then they wonder, why don't we have a good relationship with Lynn and Kieran and the kids? ands It's just like, I fucking wonder why.
00:31:30
Speaker
So, you know, it's ah that's giving me the shits this week, Justin. Ah, family. It's family. That's a... Fake collab sponsor scams and family. Who
00:31:49
Speaker
does number two work for? Yeah, there you Justin, I want to ask you a question. Yeah, ask one. Who's your legend of the week?
00:32:04
Speaker
ah My legend of the week is Matthias. He came to help me with this go-kart. And he's also been super-duper supportive.
00:32:15
Speaker
ah He managed to get a quote for three of these go-karts so he can produce them potentially. Yeah, cool. For for the WRC promoter.
00:32:28
Speaker
i um Their go-karts are so expensive, dude. like It's outrageous. Like, i just i don't honestly, I don't understand how people can afford them.
00:32:40
Speaker
Like a normal more family. Like, it's crazy. Save up, I guess. um Yeah, and he so he came and he helped me today fix the car. We did a wheel alignment on it so everything runs straight and true, which is amazing.
00:32:56
Speaker
Yeah, great. um Maybe that's why it felt safer. No, this that was actually after we ran it. Yeah, okay. Yeah. so yeah, that happened. And then on top of that, um he's organized for me to test this thing at Anabu go-kart track.
00:33:19
Speaker
Yeah, cool. so fingers crossed that the weather is okay, but it looks like Monday evening at Anabu go-kart track,
00:33:32
Speaker
I'll be testing. So if any of you guys are listening and you want to be there and be part of that, I will test it without the body on first and then i will test it with the body on if everything seems to be in order, basically.
00:33:48
Speaker
So um if you want to be part of that, you want to help me film some stuff, or whatever, I'd really appreciate you guys if you came down on Monday next week, which will be, what's the date then? I think it is 8th, Monday the 8th of September. Testing will start at 5 o'clock.
00:34:13
Speaker
ah if providing the weather is good. So if you're uncertain, ah just let me know, send me a DM if you're thinking about coming and and i'll I'll keep you informed if and we're going to be testing or if' if we're not testing on Monday, I should say.
00:34:29
Speaker
yeah So I actually have to say to my boss that I have to not show up to work on Monday because so this is the only opportunity I've got to test this thing before the weather starts getting even worse and it gets colder and a bunch of other stuff's happening, right? So, yeah. yeah I feel pretty we only really got to know this guy literally A couple of weeks ago.
00:34:57
Speaker
Really? Where'd you meet him? his His son started playing football with Henry's football team. There you go. Cool. yeah What a legend. He is a legend.
00:35:08
Speaker
And he won't listen to this because he doesn't speak English. So... who but Absolute ledge. Legend. Who's your ledge?
00:35:20
Speaker
My legend this week is Hudson. John Hudson. John Hudson. What a ledge that guy is a is. He's he' one of my colleagues at Armisen, but he is such a ledge.
00:35:40
Speaker
Not only is he funny and alller and and just a fucking top guy in general, but ah the poor fucker went on went on a bit of a bender.
00:35:54
Speaker
ah And the other weekend fell down the stairs, broke three ribs or whatever, maybe it was two, and did some fucked up shit to his back or whatever. And he's like lying out flat and totally incapacitated.
00:36:13
Speaker
but we there's shit at the brewery that we need done that only he can do. And he fucking manned up. Like, it can't even drive because he's in too much pain.
00:36:25
Speaker
ah And he just fucking manned up and came in and fucking did what needed to be done and was happy and jovial about it all whilst he did it. And when he should have been basically lying in bed, just recovering.
00:36:40
Speaker
So what a ledge.
00:36:43
Speaker
There's people like that. just They make everyone else look like a bunch of wussbags. Yeah, exactly, right? I mean, and ah it's let's not talk about the fact that he slipped over some stairs after his shit face, but, you know, whatever.
00:36:58
Speaker
um Yeah, but a genuine ledge. Talking about shit face, Karen. Yeah. You've got two new beers about to be launched.

Oslo Beer Mile and New Brews

00:37:11
Speaker
It's getting exciting. i tried both of them on the weekend. ah Really good. You sounded like you were surprised.
00:37:26
Speaker
yeah I would say I like the Citra anointing ah weirdly better because it had like this very smooth finish to it. but Or was it the other one?
00:37:43
Speaker
like I can't remember which one it was. No, I think i remember you mentioning it was, it is, it is a smooth beer. It's, it's bigger, it's sweeter. um it's, uh, that was the one that didn't ferment out all the way. so It stopped at six Plato and, uh, that one. So it's got a, it's got a definitely more of, um, full bodied kind of feel to it, which also helps round out the bitterness and all the rest.
00:38:14
Speaker
So, I mean, i'm I'm really happy with it too. The aroma on that beer is fucking fantastic. So those ah for those who of the podcast who listen to the podcast and are listening, ah probably, i mean, you could probably release the episode tomorrow. So then, and yeah, Thursday. So tomorrow, if you're listening, the day after this is released or today, 4th of September, I will be launching the two beers at Henry and Sally's in Oslo.
00:38:45
Speaker
um which is the McKellar bar. And they've got the kegs. It's all going to be part of the Oslo beer mile. um which has been really cool to see because um no a shout out to no um no heath i think his name is he's the bar manager at henry and sally's and he's been supportive from the day one actually he's like from day one i approached him he's like fuck yeah we'll buy a keg and he buys a keg just one but he buys every single beer we make and um
00:39:20
Speaker
No other bar actually has bought every single beer. I mean, some bars have bought more quantity-wise, but no bar has bought every single beer I produced.
00:39:33
Speaker
And so it's just been really lovely to see their support. And he made mention that the the the beers will be released during this, what they call the Oslo beer Mile season.
00:39:45
Speaker
which is basically like alcoholics running from one pub to the next. Right. And that he will be launching the two beers ah at Penny and Sally's at 7 o'clock on Thursday, the 4th of September.
00:40:01
Speaker
and So be there or be square. um And, yeah, as a result, though, of that post-script, I sent out an email this week announcing that I was launch releasing the beers this week and every, so like except for one major craft beer bar in in Oslo, fuck are falling all over themselves to buy beer.
00:40:32
Speaker
So that's great. About time, to be honest. So even a new customer, the OG of craft beer bars, ah Cafe Sara, has jumped on the bandwagon. So, you know, these Cafe Sara were the ones that kind of led the craft beer trend in Norway 10 years ago.
00:40:59
Speaker
and amongst the craft beer nerds is still seen as one of the premier craft beer bars. So and they've jumped on board and they want two kegs of each and cases of the cans and everything. So they're going balls deep. So that's great.
00:41:19
Speaker
Balls deep. Yeah. So that's that's happening. um So if you are free this Thursday afternoon, evening, I will be going there straight after work pretty much. So as soon as they're open, I'll be in there enjoying a fermented beverage.
00:41:37
Speaker
um And you come along, come join, say hello. I'll be there hanging out and that'd be awesome to to have some people, some fans.
00:41:49
Speaker
i wish I wish I could go there, but unfortunately I have to work my day job, so it sucks to be me, but that's how it is. ah I probably can't take off another day.
00:42:02
Speaker
I've got to go to my ba but brother's beer lounge, and then and Monday I won't be there either because I needed to go test my my homemade rally car. Yeah.
00:42:15
Speaker
yeah Well, you know, when you're driving around the track in Monaco, it'll all be forgotten. So, ah Justin, tell me, what's blowing your mind this week?

Unexpected Nürburgring Victory

00:42:29
Speaker
Well, ah what's blowing my mind is ah Misha Mishra. Bisha? Yeah, Charoudin. Okay.
00:42:40
Speaker
Charoudin. he's a he's a He's not a race car driver, but he's a guy, a German guy who races on the Nürburgring and just drives a lot of crazy cars and a lot of really standard cars too.
00:42:59
Speaker
um But he's so good. at the Nürburgring, he'll overtake Porsche 911s, GTS3s, whatever, in a Honda Civic with 120 horsepower.
00:43:15
Speaker
He knows how to drive. And it's just so amazing to watch this guy drive the Nürburgring and just completely destroy people with you know half a million dollar cars or a million dollar cars. And he's got he's driving a Honda Civic.
00:43:33
Speaker
How wouldn't that just fucking burn you? You just dropped a fucking cool mill on a on a fucking fancy car and then the Honda Civic fucking burns you.
00:43:48
Speaker
So that, I would say, is what's blowing my mind. What's blowing your mind, Kieran? You're supposed to hit the blah! Yeah.
00:43:59
Speaker
Well, because I forgot to say it when I said it. Let's be honest. I'm tired. Things not working out very good in this podcast, Garrett. Just give me a break, right? You know what's blown my mind this week? Oh, tell me. The other week you mentioned this ah this cover that Leprous did of AHA's Take On Me.
00:44:21
Speaker
Yeah. And so I watched the video the other week, and the guy's and in the video, obviously they're Norwegian, AHA's Norwegian, and one of them says, what if we sing the song in Norwegian?
00:44:36
Speaker
And then just one of them belts out, ah poor my and I was like, what? How did that, what? Like, this just hold on, this song is all about just some guy getting trying to get his dick touched.
00:44:51
Speaker
What?
00:44:55
Speaker
Mind blown. Like, how did that, how do I, how did not catch that? I mean, not that I like really listened to fucking aha, but like, it's not everyone. I mean, everyone knows the song.
00:45:09
Speaker
I'm like, it's just, they've like, Oh, hold on. um No one's going to like a song called touch me. Like, and about some desperate guy trying to get, you know,
00:45:22
Speaker
get some action before he like, I mean, have you read the lyrics to this song, Justin? No, please tell us. I'm i'm fascinated now. um I don't have the song lyrics in front of me, but it's just like, he's like basically saying in the lyrics is like, I'm not going to be here forever. So you got like, you might as well just, you know, jump on my cock.
00:45:43
Speaker
ah Just like, what the heck? I'm paraphrasing, clearly. But ah the... was just like, out what the heck? How did I not get this?
00:45:54
Speaker
Because clearly, like, Take On Me is just a literal translation of Pomei. Yeah, right. I was going to say, it's very bad, like, Norwegian English.
00:46:06
Speaker
Yeah. And it's like, they just put, like, they just got a... I mean, it would have been pre... Google Translate or anything. It would have just been, you would have been using a lexicon or something. And they would just translated it poorly. Oh, well, that sounds kind of nice. yeah Take on me. Oh, yeah.
00:46:27
Speaker
And a great song. yes Meanwhile, they dodged all the like the bullets in the in English-speaking world of all these people calling them perverts. No, but I don't think so. this this Back in that time, which is, i'm it's the 80s, right? you know There was a lot of like, look at him George Michael making all these homoerotic bloody songs and stuff. and And there's a lot of songs so like that.
00:46:56
Speaker
And you still have them, like back in the early 2000s, there was that you know Touch Me song you know and that Call On Me song and all that sort of stuff. It's pretty much like porn, softcore porn ah for the video clips.
00:47:11
Speaker
And if you listen to the lyrics, it's basically saying just come fuck me. So it's just, I think we think it's outrageous, but for its time, it was pretty normal actually.
00:47:24
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, but i just I think the thing that blew my mind is just that it it kind of went under my radar for so long. like I mean, if I really sat down and thought about it, I'd probably be like take on me. What is that even about?
00:47:40
Speaker
Like take me on as an apprentice? Like, what is this? Like, is this like as a, you know, is he applying for a job? Is this a song applying for a job? ah so no, and that's what's blowing my mind this week, Justin.
00:47:58
Speaker
ye
00:48:00
Speaker
Um, any recommend, or have we really talked much about what's gone on in your life? No, you haven't. I'm sorry. Let's just, uh, get back to me.
00:48:14
Speaker
All that you, you, you and your rally cars.
00:48:18
Speaker
It's true.
00:48:21
Speaker
So, uh, no, um, Lynn's dropping some stuff in the background here. What was that noise? Um, No, i mean, honestly, it's it's been a not much to report since we since last week.
00:48:36
Speaker
ah The beer launch, as I mentioned, is coming this week, so it's going to be kind of exciting to see. The beers are tasting great, and I'm excited to see how they're received by the market.
00:48:48
Speaker
um I've got to finalise some things for the like just the last small bits of for graphics on the Christmas beers. And, you know, i'm I was kind of lucky. I ran the recipe through past John for these Christmas beers.
00:49:10
Speaker
and um And he just mentioned something. And I don't even know if he was actually thinking about the thing I was thinking about. But he he mentioned like ah you know like, you know, how you want to make up the the beer, like the malt bill and the and the salt additions to the water profile. it's ah that's up That's on you, he says. He used that term. That's on you.
00:49:39
Speaker
And I was like, hold on. Is he saying something is something I should look at? So then I started reviewing the recipe that I'd written and I spotted this massive fucking problem with it. And ah and I just, I totally...
00:49:55
Speaker
overcompensated with this malt called Special B and put way too much into it in and it would have ruined the beer. So I'm glad he fucking said something not without actually saying anything.
00:50:08
Speaker
and That's how much of a legend he is um because i I caught the problem and and basically but job made an adjustment to the recipe and and now I'm a lot happier with it.
00:50:21
Speaker
So that's going to be exciting to see. um so that's cool those that's going to be a tight deadline on those ones too they to be and that brewing that's being brewed next wednesday um so that will go into the tanks and uh hopefully it packages quick because it's got to be in the warehouse by the end of the month and so time is ticking and uh and so it's going to be a another tight deadline

Balancing Contracts and Beer Projects

00:50:50
Speaker
on that. So things, things are kind of moving quickly with these different things and, uh, hopefully, uh, stuff will just keep kicking on and, and, uh, yeah.
00:51:04
Speaker
So the balance between, did I tell you guys last week that I signed a full-time contract with Armisen? Yeah, you did. Yeah. Yeah. So now obviously I'm working full-time,
00:51:17
Speaker
with Almondson and Eucharist is a side project basically. But, you know, I think if this, if the trend kind of goes as it's going now, i like to think that these, that things will really start to kick off in the coming coming months, especially the Christmas beer. If I can make a good Christmas beer this year,
00:51:44
Speaker
and separate it out from the crowd a little bit um i'm really excited to see where that will go so yeah that's uh there's really not much else to tell to be honest i feel like um the only thing um youre really excited for otherwise is that the hop plant in the garden has started to produce flowers.
00:52:09
Speaker
let's go So I'm like, okay, well maybe you can do some fun wet hop beer at home. ah have promised Mackenzie that I'm going to make water with him.
00:52:20
Speaker
so you know, we're going to do those kinds of stuff together and yeah. So there's some stuff to looking for, look forward to in the, in the autumn. And, uh,
00:52:31
Speaker
And mushroom picking, hopefully. So the season has already started, so I should be out there getting on it.
00:52:40
Speaker
Cool. Any recommendations before we wrap this thing up? My recommendation, recommendation. What is my recommendation?
00:52:52
Speaker
yeah ah For this week, and Platonic on Apple Plus, Apple TV, whatever it is.

Entertainment Recommendation

00:53:03
Speaker
Have you seen this, Justin?
00:53:04
Speaker
No. No, it's actually quite good. It's got Rose Byrne in it. Okay. ah You know who Rose Byrne is. Yeah. Yeah. My brother went to school with Rose Byrne, as he likes to proudly say.
00:53:18
Speaker
and um And it's ah Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen back together. Yeah, okay. and So there's the, what's the movie called? Is it called Bad Parents or something?
00:53:33
Speaker
yes Yeah, yes something like that. Yeah, where they they play like a couple and there's a college frat that moves in next door. And so they've got the same kind of dynamic, but they're actually platonic friends.
00:53:49
Speaker
They're both. Yeah. And, and you know, they've been friends forever. And it's it's really enjoyable. I really like the dynamic between those two characters.
00:54:03
Speaker
And I enjoyed watching the first season, and they've just come with a season two now So... m which I don't have time to watch. but um But, yeah, that's my recommendation for this week, platonic.
00:54:19
Speaker
Cool. ah My recommendation is actually just the World Rally Championship. ah Some things happened in Paraguay ah this weekend where the eight times world champion at the end of the rally basically said, watch out, I'm going to win this championship.
00:54:41
Speaker
and he's in third place at the moment. So, ah them's me fighting words. It's kind of crazy that he's sort of come back on a part-time. We're talking about Sebastian OJ here, right? Yeah. yeah He's come back on a part-time drive and now is capable of ah winning the his ninth world title.
00:55:05
Speaker
um He just completely destroyed everybody in Paraguay. Hmm.
00:55:12
Speaker
He even got a puncture and then he fought his way back. he was just so much faster than everybody else and left everyone in the dust. And the same thing actually happened with our patriot, um Norwegian patriot, Oliver Solberg.
00:55:31
Speaker
Yeah. So he had a puncture on Friday and he just I think he was about a minute 30 down or something like this when he had the puncture and he clawed his way back to win the whole thing.
00:55:44
Speaker
It just it's pretty amazing. And I think if people really start to understand the sport, then it's only going to get bigger because it's so exciting all the time.
00:55:57
Speaker
Well, I think I mean
00:56:02
Speaker
the The whole Solberg thing is is an interesting story in itself, right? Like you have a dad who's like a world-renowned rally driver and then use you know just start driving and then turns out you're pretty fucking good too.
00:56:24
Speaker
and Well, you have to be when you've got your dad teaching you, basically. Yeah, but still, i mean, fuck. I mean, you might just be like, you know, dad, I just want to play PlayStation and jerk off instead, you know?
00:56:35
Speaker
Like, you don't have to follow in. some Some kids rebel against their parents, ah you know. Yeah, but it's ah it's honestly a lifestyle for them. They've been, you know, like there's clips of Oliver when he was like a baby, you know, being carted around the world, you know.
00:56:54
Speaker
Yeah, right. In service parks and along the sides of rally stages. So, you know, he's... He's been there and and he's had to prove it for a long time. you know this This year when he just got called in to do a rally in the top tier of the Rally 1 cars and end up winning the whole Estonia in the top class, it shows you how fast he is and Now he's had to go back to the lower class, ah but he's still incredibly fast. it's
00:57:25
Speaker
If Toyota does not employ him for next year, they are stupid. because he has to be one of the fastest drivers out there at the moment. So it's going to be super exciting, and I want everyone to get involved. I mean, there's a reason why I'm building a tiny rally car. It's because I think the sport's amazing, and the cars are cool, and, you know, my recommendation is... If he doesn't get in you know, a car in...
00:57:53
Speaker
2026, Justin, you can just ring him up and say, can drive one of my minicars. Yep, 100%. Let's go. this guy If you're first out on stage. Yeah. ah ah Wouldn't that be a fucking while, Justin?
00:58:07
Speaker
If we can reach out to fucking the Solbergs.
00:58:12
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, I honestly think something could happen there maybe, but i I don't know. You know, like I think I just have to do my job and and that's complete the car. And I think when it's wrapped, you know, and looking like ah the the Rally 1 car you know, everyone, like you even see it now, like with the rear wing and everything on it, it looks pretty damn tough.
00:58:38
Speaker
Yeah. But when it's wrapped, and looks like a real rally car, I think people just gonna lose their minds. So I'm looking forward to that. I'm looking forward to sharing that with people. So awesome. Well, i look forward to hearing how the tests goes. I won't be able to make it to the test. I'll be driving home at that stage.
00:58:57
Speaker
So, uh, yeah, I look forward to it. And, and please, uh, people, if you're in the area where Justin will be testing the car, come down and help him out, hold a camera.
00:59:10
Speaker
And just be there for moral support. That'd be awesome. I agree. I think that'd be great. um Everyone is welcome. um Let's leave it there, Kieran.
00:59:21
Speaker
Awesome. Thanks for listening, everybody. Cheers. We will keep you updated. See ya. See ya. Later.
