In this special celebratory episode, Tiffanie and Jess talk about celebrating turning 40, how empowering it can be if you let it, and how to empower our clients through their own aging processes. We share our own timeless advice for estheticians that we have learned from decades of being in the industry and leading others through it.

As our industry evolves, so does Vitamin C! In this episode, we talk about our new course, Vitamin C, Decoded and some of the ins and outs of Vitamin C and how it's evolved and changed over the years. We talk about everything from the new evolved Vitamin C's we are seeing in our industry AND how to trouble shoot with L-Ascorbic Acid when we need to. The earning potential with skincare's most popular ingredient is vast and we dive into why continuing education can create more abundance as an esthetician to reach your own financial goals.

Introduction and Post-Trip Reflections

00:01:22
Speaker
Welcome to the Beyond Aesthetics podcast. We are your hosts. My name is Tiffany Orr, and I am joined by my beautiful co-host. My name is Jessica Peterson.
00:01:34
Speaker
And we are so thrilled that you are here, and we are so thrilled to be here with you. Welcome. Welcome. Welcome. Welcome. We're just coming off of a holiday weekend and we were on our membership call this morning. We do a live call on the first Monday of every month and words were, it was an amazing call. Words were just a little bit difficult this morning because...
00:01:58
Speaker
We've both been away camping and playing and then i got home really late and didn't get to bed until really late because I unpack as soon as I get home and like clean my house. um And so, yeah, we were on our live call this morning and both kind of struggling for our words just a little bit, but like in the best way possible. I still just kind of feel like I'm on cloud nine. so Yeah, I still feel a little bit on vacation mode. I mean, same, we got home, not super late, but last evening and I'm the same way. I have to unpack the car. I've got to get laundry going. I've got to get, you know, um feel situated so that I can relax. I can't relax until that's done. Um,

Disconnecting from Technology

00:02:42
Speaker
and so, but I'm actually, I love that about myself because you too i did, I don't procrastinate that stuff anymore. Like i used to when I was younger. but it was a great weekend being in the mountains. I didn't have self-service all weekend long and and it was so amazing. I would actually love to like spend a whole summer out of self-service, possibly the rest of my life. I don't know. That's a time feeling. Yeah. No, it's always really nice to get a break. I have a satellite phone because I'm always out there alone. And so I don't really get that. um
00:03:14
Speaker
I'm usually just in full communication with everybody. But I will say on my satellite phone, I actually don't have social media. I don't have my email on there, anything. And so if I'm only using that phone, I am still pretty disconnected for the most part. Yeah. From like the email and the social media, and then I can just converse with whoever I want or need to. So that's kind of a bonus, you know, but.
00:03:40
Speaker
Yeah, you still have authority over who you want to communicate when you can like call and text, but I think it's the email and the social media that we lose a little bit of our. um Yeah, our own authority in that because it's just constant information coming at you. And so if you're new here or if it's been a while, like this is our reminder to remind you if you're feeling overwhelmed from that constant influx of information and just everything coming at you all day long, like highly recommend take social media, the social media apps off of your phone for a while. Like you won't miss anything. i did not. i I know now it would used to be really hard for me to disconnect from social media, like really hard. And I would go through like withdrawals, like I would go to grab my phone and like go to like load Facebook or Instagram and then being on a service. I'm like, oh, yeah, I can't. This weekend, I didn't even have any desire to do that. So it's been a practice. um
00:04:39
Speaker
And it is so healing for your soul. You won't miss a thing. You won't miss a thing. Like I, I didn't have service since Friday. Today's Monday. And I literally didn't miss anything. And it was a holiday weekend. Like there was lots going on and I didn't have FOMO. I didn't feel like I missed anything important. In fact, it's almost like when I do get a break,
00:05:00
Speaker
I am a little bit turned off by it. When I, when I unconnect from that, I get a little bit like, I actually don't like this at all. I don't like how it's making me feel. And so I stayed disconnected for a while. And I love that.
00:05:15
Speaker
Yeah, no, I definitely do too. And I think that that's really important. And it's always an important reminder that what is the most important is what is right in front of you right here, right now. There's really nothing on your phone that that's important that is that important unless there's like a family emergency. so yeah. Everything can wait. Even most of

Podcast Preview and Esthetician Insights

00:05:34
Speaker
your work tasks are just not actually an emergency. So um allow yourself that time to disconnect, I think is really important. um We're really excited about our conversation today. So we'll just let you guys know how today's conversation is going to go. um We're going to talk about our live call that we had this morning, actually. And then we want to touch on the vitamin C class that we posted in the membership page. as well. That was really fun. So we'll touch on that. And then we're going to
00:06:07
Speaker
celebrate us turning 40. It's July. Oh my gosh, my birthday was yesterday. i turned 40 yesterday. So we're recording this on July 6. So I turned 40 yesterday. And Tiff, you've got like, not even what,
00:06:25
Speaker
two weeks. Less than two weeks. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. My birthday's on the 19th of July. So I'll be 40 then. So Jess and i are, this is the year of 40 and we're both cancers and you know, we're soul sisters. And so we just have lots to celebrate. We have lots to share about turning 40 and where we're at with life and that wisdom that we would love to just, um, share with you. um,
00:06:54
Speaker
Yeah, it's just, it's so beautiful. I'm so grateful. There's a big part of me that didn't think I would ever like make it to 40. always thought I would die like really young, oddly enough. And so I'm just like so grateful to be here and to, I've never felt better. Yeah, definitely. So we can't wait to talk about that. And then we want to share just in our like 40 years of wisdom, but actually just our aesthetic careers. We want to share...
00:07:23
Speaker
basically each of our main pieces of advice as estheticians. We've kind of just each chosen our hill and we're going to talk about those with you too. So we have lots of things to discuss and let's go ahead and just start um with what's kind of going on in the membership or let's talk about our live call. We had so many really, really great conversations this morning. So When you're inside the membership, we do a live call on the first Monday of every month. And basically there's a little channel.
00:07:59
Speaker
Or a space within the membership that you leave any topic requests for the next live call. And so that's how we are able to plan. And then we also just touch on basically anything that comes up during that live call too, which is usually a lot. So I'm going to tell you guys everything that we talked about this morning, cause it was just such a good conversation. We started off by talking about getting a medical director. We talked about why you would need a medical director and then how to go about getting one onboarded or partnering with one, if you will.
00:08:36
Speaker
um We talked a lot about regulations and keeping ourselves in check just in general. So, you know, checking in with the state board when you're questioning the scope of practice and stuff like that. We, we actually talked a lot about keeping the ego in check. I think those of us who have been estheticians for a really long time, we do tend to ah get away with ourselves sometimes like myself, you know, included. And there obviously is a lot of information online right now about a really well-known successful esthetician who just surrendered her license because she burned severely burned a client's face and it sounds like it wasn't the first time that she had done that and it's because she was working extravagantly outside of her scope of practice and it was a really good reminder I think for every esthetician to recheck in with ourselves and where we're at and you guys honestly when you've been an esthetician for decades it happens like this is not uncommon to
00:09:43
Speaker
but just have that level of confidence and ego to start doing some crazy things. And so I actually think that that was kind of a blessing for our whole industry to just have that reminder. And so if you haven't looked into the situation, if you don't know what we're talking about, we are referring to Sonia Dakar and her having to surrender her license due to burning client, like I said,
00:10:11
Speaker
I really do think every esthetician, if you're not aware of it, you do need to research it, read the article, get the details, see what happened, learn about that whole whole process and everything that went down so that we, again, can all just be reminded and really keeping ourselves in check when it comes to rules and regulations. And then keeping in mind to like one point that we were really driving home as well, is to go straight to the board for questions and answers. Don't be getting into Facebook groups, like not even in our membership. Like if you get into our membership and you're asking those types of questions about regulation, we're just going to point you to the board because we all think that we know and law can be misinterpreted and
00:11:02
Speaker
You really do want to protect your license by going straight to the board. Like don't ask around other estheticians, like whatever, just go straight to the board for your information.
00:11:13
Speaker
So from there, we talked about Risks, documentation, um client notes. We talked about intake forms, just basically piggybacking off of that conversation and how to keep ourselves really protected. We talked about, you know, insurance and and all those really important topics for estheticians.
00:11:37
Speaker
and Then we

Business Growth and Mentorship

00:11:38
Speaker
really switched to gears and we were talking about affiliate marketing and making money through affiliate. And I used Tiffany as such a wonderful example of having an online store and how great she did like building the social media, creating the community. i mean, literally so much so that like you poured years into that, but you did it in a way where now you don't have to rely solely on social media to drive the traffic to your store. You're doing really well because of the groundwork that you laid, but we really weighed out kind of the, the pros and cons of either having your own online store or working with any sort of affiliate sort of a foundation like pomp is a really good example.
00:12:26
Speaker
ah the amount of work that's going to go into that to make it grow, which essentially is a lot of social media. So you do kind of have to decide if that is something that you want to pour your heart into or not. So it's possible. And Tiffany is a really great example of doing it right. But also not everybody is going to love that it's really easy to get burned out by it or to feel like obligation and pressure to always be on social media. And that's either something that you really enjoy and can commit to, or it's going to be something that isn't really in alignment with you. So I really loved having that conversation because it's something that I think we all think we want huh until you realize what actually goes into it and the amount of time you're going to be spending on social media. And if you already don't like social media, then that's probably not going to be a great road for you to go down.
00:13:22
Speaker
Absolutely. Yeah, I loved the pros and cons aspect of that conversation, just because it is such a good reminder. And again, i think we can get caught up in like everybody's doing it. And therefore, I need to do it too, or I'm going to get left behind. And that just is not true. It's just in what is right for one, maybe be so different for you. And so again, it's just that having that honest conversation with yourself, and ah really asking yourself what is in alignment with you, where you wanna spend, pour your time and energy. And it's like not the only way, right? There's a million paths that lead to your goals and that abundance that you want and your success. And so I loved having that conversation, but it was a great conversation have because it is really, really fruitful for a lot of estheticians as well.
00:14:14
Speaker
Yeah, no, it absolutely is. Yeah. and And again, you're like such a good example of of doing that and doing it right for sure. the The next conversation we had, which I was very surprised by was becoming a mentor or a trainer in our industry. So a lot of people loved that i had questions about that because there's a few of our members who are really feeling that pull and that calling on their heart.
00:14:39
Speaker
And so we talked a lot about that. We actually spent a good good chunk of time and energy having that conversation because I think it is fairly normal for an esthetician get to a point in their career where they want to you know reach out and now help either other new estheticians or act as more of like even a consultant for current estheticians and So it isn't uncommon and it was really, really fun to just how many people are feeling called to that and
00:15:13
Speaker
I love that. Like, it's so cool. And, and I mean, it's needed in our industry, right? Because it's such a booming, oh how do I want to put this into words? It's such a booming industry. It's a booming career, yet school is still limited. It's, you know, most schools are like, what, 600 ish hours. it really just depends on where you're at. And so some schools are really good at teaching technique and teaching, you know, kind of the business client relationship side and some of them just aren't. And so there's a lot like school's really important and it's so good and there's so much that's covered. And then for a lot of people, there's a lot missing when it comes to actually being out in the real world and really mastering your technique and whatnot. And so I really do love the fact that there's so many people who have that calling because there's definitely room And there's definitely a need for it. And it can be so different for everybody, but it was really cool to have that conversation.
00:16:10
Speaker
So we did talk about that a lot. And then we kind of landed the conversation on going back to menu and pricing. A lot of the discussions that we have with all estheticians and we have for years is about what type of menu do you want? Do you want to charge for your time and have kind of all inclusive pricing or do you want specific facials and everybody's really different. But the main conversation we were having is like, if you're going to have this you know, time-based inclusive menu, what enhancements are included and what enhancements are we going charge for? And then that conversation always comes back to Tiffany's favorite conversation, which is like, you really have to know your numbers and you can't get around that because you can't make the right decision for you and your business until you actually know what your numbers are. You know, so that's kind of where we landed is like, go back to the drawing board and let's get those numbers. And then we can revisit this conversation again to make sure that you're being paid correctly and that we're still loving and giving back to our clients in the best way possible. So that's a conversation that seems to be really ongoing is learning what your numbers are and figuring that out, especially when it comes to how your menu is set up.
00:17:34
Speaker
Absolutely. And for menu, I just love your, your best advice on keeping it as simple as possible for your clients and to view your menu as a client, as a customer, make sure we take ourselves ah out of our esthetician shoes and really look at our website, our menu, our bookings, our booking link, from that outside in perspective and be honest with ourselves from that. And even bringing into like our circle, like our close family and friends and asking their advice on how it operates, how they felt like they were able to navigate it, what questions they have to kind of give you that outside perspective. But the simpler your menu can be, the better.
00:18:13
Speaker
ah her Absolutely. yes how we look at our own menus very, very different than what a client is seeing online, you know, in our menu or a brochure, they just, they don't know what most of that means. So keeping it simple is great. And then it really does come down to pricing and making sure that all of that makes sense. So we love having that conversation. it's it's always ongoing and it's always evolving, but I feel like that is like one of the best things to have other estheticians input and advice on. And that's one of the best parts of the community. And then everyone was like, what, you know, pen do you use? What, what this, what this? And it's so fun to get everybody's input. And we learn new stuff too. Like I had no idea there was such huge discrepancy in the cost of the, even just nano infusion.
00:19:06
Speaker
consumables oh my gosh it's like all over the place and i think that that's so great to be in a group like this where we can be like oh maybe i need to make a new investment like maybe i need to so a different pen you know that is not costing me so much money for my consumables so i just i think that that is the best part of the membership and the community and something that we talked about too is just that um everyone has their own secret sauce. So like, you know, if one esthetician is telling another esthetician, like the meat and potatoes of their business and how they do things and that other esthetician just basically straight up copies it, it's still going to be different. And I i love to just remind people that I have worked with thousands of estheticians and hundreds and hundreds of skincare businesses over the last 13 years and not one of them are the same. even if

Education and the Power of Vitamin C

00:20:04
Speaker
they end up sharing information with each other. So I think that is one of my favorite things about the industry is that you as an individual, as an esthetician, have your own heart, your own secret sauce, your personality, your connection, your relationships, and And so even if the blueprint is the same, it's still going to be different. It's still going to be your own. And that's actually what makes this industry really fun. And that's also why we don't have to be cutthroat about it. Like I don't see that in this industry, but I think that's just my unique perspective of being like the outsider. Like I'm working with these businesses and
00:20:43
Speaker
They are like everybody's so different. And the amount of people that I work with who are using very similar blueprints, either within our community or within my role as a rep, it's not like there's millions of blueprints to choose from, you know, so they're very, very similar blueprints, but they're all very different because of the personality. Yeah.
00:21:06
Speaker
Yeah, the heart and soul behind it behind you as the esthetician. And it's just so beautiful. It's what makes this industry so fun. And again, like it's our perspective of the industry. Not everybody views the industry that way, um the same way that you and I do. But having like the membership community and just like the on the live call this morning and having those conversations and sharing the devices that they use and sharing this information with such people confident freeness is so beautiful and so empowering. it makes me emotional because this is everything. This is what every esthetician deserves is to have a safe community to bring up things that are hard or things that you're going through with your business or your practice. And then asking those hard questions and not being made to feel dumb or feel like you're like taking, like you have those other estheticians that are just willing to give that information. yeah And it's just such a beautiful exchange. And it's, that's, what's powerful about it. Yeah, definitely. And if you join the community at any time, you have access to every other live call yeah that we've ever had. And so if you join now you actually get that entire conversation and every other live call that we've ever had. So all of those are recorded and they just stay in that membership. And, um, I love that oh actually its really cool. and again, like you can always revisit those conversations too as a member, even if you were on the live call and just the energy behind it is contagious. yeah Yeah. I know it excites me. And like and like you said, like I learn every i learned something new every time as well. from these estheticians. And we have estheticians all over the board. We've got brand new estheticians. We've got very seasoned estheticians. We've got ah solo estheticians, ones that work for a spa. They're kind of all over the map and that's what makes it diverse and exciting and and really be valuable.
00:23:07
Speaker
Yeah. And they're from everywhere too, which is really fun. Yeah. We've got people from all over the place. Yeah. Wonderful. So also within the membership, we do continuing education, which I think is one of the most powerful parts of what we do in addition to the live calls. So continuing education for July was a course called vitamin C decoded, and that's free in the membership. So if you're a member, you get access to that course for free. Our past courses were dermaplanes. So for the month of June, Tiffany did a very thorough dermaplaning course. It was wonderful. And then also how to elevate. your Dermaplane services and kind of take it to the next level level. And then in May, it was peptides. It was a very in-depth peptide class. And so again, all of that is available in the membership. It stays in the membership. So it's not just like one month and then it's gone. So basically we're just creating a whole library full of continuing education. And so, like I said, July was the vitamin C decoded and it is probably my favorite so far. I think what was really fun is we collaborated on it. So ah um June was Tiffany, May was me. And then for July, we did half and half. So we collaborated on this course and that was a really fun thing to do. And I think obviously we both have different teaching styles and we're teaching different subjects about vitamin C. And so you do get kind of a more vast experience with it, i guess is a good way to put that. So vitamin C is kind of one of those subjects that like, you think, you know,
00:24:58
Speaker
and there's more like, and then there's there's still and there's more. Yes. And there's things that we're reminded of, right. Which I think is what I love about skincare so much is just that I use this example in the vitamin C class, actually like hyaluronic acid, we think is very straightforward, but nothing could be further from the truth. yeah,
00:25:22
Speaker
It's one of those, so like vitamin hyaluronic acid, they're foundations. I wouldn't even say they're all their basics in our industry. No, no they are foundations of the industry for a reason. and we think we understand them. we think that we know them. We think we know why they're really important. And then you learn a little bit more and then you learn a little bit more. And the thing is, too, is that those foundational, you know, quote unquote ingredients, if you will, or, you know, product types in our industry, they're evolving like crazy. And I think that was the thing about the vitamin C class that was one of my biggest takeaways was.
00:26:09
Speaker
how much we're evolving beyond L-ascorbic acid and why, you know, like what are the pros and cons and choosing different types of vitamin C for different skin types and talking more about stability and packaging and delivery systems. And there were, there was so much in that course that I was like, this is what I love about skincare is the evolvement of it. Yeah.
00:26:37
Speaker
Oh my gosh. Yes. I mean, even just putting that course together, I was reminded, and and i even learned some things on the research that I was doing for the vitamin c on how diverse and how layered vitamin C as a subject even is.
00:26:55
Speaker
And what's really cool about these continuing education classes that we're putting together is it helps the aesthetician go so much deeper than just the blanket information that you learn in aesthetic school or that maybe you didn't quite understand. i think that's where it connected for me is like I learned a lot of this in aesthetic school almost 15 years ago.
00:27:19
Speaker
But i wasn't a seasoned esthetician then. So a lot of it really didn't connect. And so it was really cool to like, oh yeah, I did learn that. And now I understand why, like there's a certain delivery system with this type of vitamin C and all of those things really kind of connected for me because I have all of this other knowledge now as an esthetician. And does that make sense? That's actually a very, very good point. Yes, definitely. Because most of these things,
00:27:48
Speaker
We did learn in school, you know, there's so many things that until I even became a rep and an educator, i didn't understand. And I literally had like nine or so years under my belt as an esthetician working very full time that whole time. And then I would be in the middle of, you know, teaching something and something would click.
00:28:09
Speaker
Uh huh. And I'd be like, oh damn. I'm just understanding that fully, like in this moment, or i would be traveling around with other, you know, educators with eminence and they would just say something in a way that I was like, oh, that was an aha moment for me, you know? Yeah. Like an aha moment. Yeah. Wow. Interesting. Like even the P like understanding the pH scale,
00:28:34
Speaker
in a more simple way that in school they'd make it complicated or they don't quite just like lay it out as a baseline for you, such as like the lower the pH, the stronger the peel. You know what I mean? Like it's, yeah they taught that in school, but it's like, they don't say it that way. Right. And then there's all this other information that comes along with it and so you kind of forget it, you know, and I'm like, percentages don't actually matter nearly as much

Simplifying Skincare Concepts

00:28:59
Speaker
as the pH of that particular product. But Even it took me what 13, 12 ish years before that fully landed with me. I mean, that's probably like a little bit longer, but it's like, it's okay. It's okay. In fact, going back to my example of hyaluronic acid. So there were things about hyaluronic acid that I'm like, I probably knew this. Yeah. And I just forgot, you know, I forgot that hyaluronic acid in your skin is essential for cellular communication and healing and is important for the skin barrier, but we just are so surface level with hydration and plumbing, right? You know, and I'm like, and there's just yeah so much more that's happening with hyaluronic acid and, you know, vitamin C. Well, and again, that comes back to the why continuing education is so important because there's the marketing aspect of the marketing material that an esthetician can rely on from the company that you're partnered with, from the product um
00:30:00
Speaker
you know, marketing that comes along with that product. And then there's the continuing education side where you dive deeper and it actually simplifies all of that, all of the information in a way that is like understandable, digestible. It simplifies it in your head as the esthetician so that then you can have so much more confidence when you're retailing the product, when you're treating the client in your treatment room, when you're doing the services and the treatments that you have that come along with like that ingredient, say like vitamin C or hyaluronic acid. I just like, it's just incredible how taking the time to have the continuing education behind a certain ingredient like vitamin C simplifies it so much more by just delving into that information, at least for me.
00:30:52
Speaker
No, i I second that so much. Now, another portion of our continuing education, especially with vitamin C, is then how to sell it. So just ah a reminder, if you've ever worked with me in any capacity or you've been listening for a long time, selling and recommending something is very different than what we learned about it. So we don't take all of that information that we learned and then...
00:31:18
Speaker
deliver all of that to our client. Cause that's like way, way, way too much. It's more like the slow trickle of information that will connect with this person and is what is useful to them. And so there's a whole module on how to recommend and sell vitamin C to a client specifically. Right. which is really, really important. And then there's also income potential. Mm-hmm.
00:31:46
Speaker
So whenever we are going through continuing education, that should also be at the forefront of your mind is like, yes, this is going to help me do my treatments that much better and understand the skin so much better. And it's also going to help you to recommend more product, sell more product, sell more services.
00:32:05
Speaker
And that is going to increase your income. And what's cool about vitamin C is it does tend to be a pricier product. product like your clinical vitamin C's, they're expensive. They literally range anywhere from 70 to $180. So once you have a baseline understanding of, you know, well, in this case, you're going to have an in-depth understanding of vitamin C. And then you have that like, okay, here's how I'm going to now recommend the product. I mean, I even walk you through so many actual, um,
00:32:41
Speaker
Words, what's the word I'm looking for? Like a scenario. Dialogue and scenarios. So I even give you so many different examples of that. Now we're going to be able to recommend that with confidence, but also just in a simplified way that connects with our client.
00:33:00
Speaker
And so I even laid out examples of if you were to sell two serums per week, two vitamin C serums at just average $110 each, here's your income potential. This is how many Starbucks per week. That's going to pay for, or this is how much you can put away in savings for your vacation next year. So, and I think it's honestly so incredibly useful to look at things that way, right? Like, okay, now I have this excitement and this passion and this deeper understanding, and I also know how to sell it. And so if I want to plan on buying a house, if I want to plan this vacation, if I want, you know, to splurge on Starbucks a little bit more, if I want this new pair of shoes, if I want to bring in another product line, like whatever your financial goals are, you can literally break down the average cost of a product like

Balancing Passion with Financial Goals

00:33:52
Speaker
this and then challenge yourself to sell two per week or three per week or five per week and actually be able to break down those numbers so that you know what you have to look forward to. And I'm just telling you how to sell it. So I'm just saying like, here's your verbiage. Here's how to sell it. Here's exactly what to say. Here's your exact consultation so that you know then how to recommend it and sell it. And so the income potential with the continuing education is such an important aspect of it too.
00:34:27
Speaker
Cause that's what we're here to do. We're here you know, to build our career and to make money. And, um, we're not afraid to talk about money and we love money. We want to make more of it and we want everybody to be making more money as estheticians. And so that is a cornerstone of our continuing education too.
00:34:46
Speaker
Absolutely. It was a big, topic that we had on the live call this morning, actually of like, yes, we're estheticians. Yes, we're here to serve. Yes, we want to help our clients look and feel beautiful from the inside out.
00:35:00
Speaker
And this is a business. This is our livelihood. This is how we feed our family. This is how we pay our bills. And so they do go hand in hand. And we're not here to just like talk pretty. We're here to talk the financials for you too, and to help your earning potential and help you see how you can actually make more money and have a thriving, fulfilling, beautiful career alongside it. So it is such a big part of pie.
00:35:28
Speaker
pi Like, yes, and we're not afraid to talk about money and we love to talk about money. We love to get those financials out in front of us. So I love that we highlighted the financial aspect in the vitamin C course. It's really, really valuable. And it is something that you can turn and take that information and then you utilize with like hyaluronic acid, or you can utilize with any other skincare product too. So the knowledge is just so valuable. Once you have it, once you see it, once you understand it and the beautiful way that you lay it out, Jess, it's just so impactful.
00:36:02
Speaker
And it's simple. It's easy. It actually is easy. Selling is so much easier. we love to make it really complicated and it just isn't. So it just isn't. Um, I would love to hear your biggest takeaway that you want to share from what you taught in the vitamin C class.
00:36:24
Speaker
My biggest takeaway, let me see. i'm
00:36:32
Speaker
I think, well, I mean, I have several, i think for one, i am just like astounded at how many different types of vitamin C's there are on the market and the different um like delivery systems that come along with it and how they work with the skin um and how they're composed and the ingredients that pair well with them. i think that was really fascinating. You know, there's almost no two vitamin C's that are alike and that's, what's really cool about it. um And so i liked researching other other companies' vitamin C's too. You know, I'm an eminence girly through and through. and so I don't take a whole lot of time to really dive into other brands or products. And so I liked doing that too. It was really fascinating and really cool. um
00:37:21
Speaker
And then i also, I think the origin of vitamin C and how it came about, I loved learning about that. And, um you know, how far back vitamin C goes and where where it really originated from and how it's just evolved over the generations and the hundreds of years. And now, I mean, it's just such a important component as a human to internally and externally have vitamin C in our daily consistent lives. And so I really liked the history of it and learning that, too.
00:37:55
Speaker
Yeah, no, I definitely agree. And i think I just, I would second that so much because, you L-ascorbic acid is the most researched, the most common. It's also has the potential for the most irritation. It's like, it's just...
00:38:15
Speaker
That's what we're using the most of in the industry, right? And so part of what I taught was troubleshooting that for people is, all right, if we have a client who is getting sensitive from a vitamin C, it's because it's L-ascorbic acid, and this is why it is doing that. You know, it has such a low pH. It's very, very active. It's got very specific delivery systems to get into the skin. And so if we want to keep our client on it, here's how we can kind of troubleshoot how we're working with L-ascorbic acid for different people.
00:38:48
Speaker
um it could even mean rebuilding the barrier and taking a couple of weeks to even a month to get the barrier into a place where we can then incorporate. and L-ascorbic acid because it is so powerful and works very quickly. So it's lovely. But then at the same time, like not everybody's going to be able to handle that. And so that's where learning about the more evolved types of vitamin C's come into play. I also thought what was really fascinating that i and didn't fully know is sodium ascorbyl phosphate being good for acne.
00:39:20
Speaker
I know. I'm like, okay. Cause we've both done that with a couple of different companies. Um, so I'm very familiar with it, but I actually did not know that when it comes to acne, sodium ascorbate phosphate is actually the way to go. That's a salt form of a vitamin c Um, so I thought that was really cool. And then also the three O ethyl ascorbate being,
00:39:46
Speaker
really good for hyperpigmentation. And I think that's where the evolvement of vitamin C really comes into play for me is like, not just that some people have a lot of sensitivities to L-ascorbic acid, but also like, Hey, wait a second. Now we're getting to a place where,
00:40:06
Speaker
sodium ascorbic phosphate really great for acne. And so maybe we don't even need to worry about the L-ascorbic acid. We can just go straight for this source instead. Does that make sense? Or like the tetrahexadesa ascorby being, you know, so like a lipid based and how that's going to work with the skin and offer so much more even hydration and anti-aging benefit. So maybe we do bypass L-ascorbic acid and just go straight for that. And so That's what I love and think is so important is understanding that and learning about how things have really evolved and why, you know, because yeah, Ellis Gorbuck does seem to be
00:40:54
Speaker
I don't want to say the best, but it is like the most researched. Yeah. At the same time, we do run into a lot of issues with it, the you know, and even understanding why that is, i think is really important. And it's actually something that most estheticians don't know. So if you don't know this, you guys, when you're working with L-ascorbic acid, It's extremely active and has a low pH. So even the one with eminence is like a pH of 2.7 or something crazy. It's very, very low. So if you think about it, if you have a client with an impaired barrier or rosacea or general sensitivities, and you go to put on this L-ascorbic acid, or you've just done a peel, you know, and then you put on an L-ascorbic acid, they're going to feel it. They're going to have some sensitivities. And it's actually just super, super common for our clients to be like, oh, I'm so sensitive to vitamin C. But then once you realize, well, alloscorbic acid is highly active and it has a really low pH, that's why this is happening. And so here's how we can either choose a different one or
00:42:02
Speaker
Implement it and kind of troubleshoot with it to make it work kind of a thing. So I think that was really impactful and really powerful. um Obviously, what lands with me is teaching people how to sell it to.
00:42:17
Speaker
you know, and not talking about antioxidants at all when you go to sell it. And that's something you know about me. I'm like, don't bother. Don't bother. Just tell people this because this is what they want and need to hear. And like trying to go into the whole antioxidant free radical conversation, it doesn't land with people the way that you want it to.
00:42:39
Speaker
It just doesn't. There's a much easier way to sell it. So that was really important to you. And then I think honestly, the income potential was a huge takeaway for me and being able to relate that back to goals that you might have, whether or not that is Starbucks and shoes or bringing in a new skincare line and or like building up your savings account, you know? So I thought that was really cool. Those income examples too, um they were, there's two different segments where I went into, you commission based on if you're making like 10% commission in retail sales, this is what that looks like. But then also if you are the solo business owner, here's like what your markup and all of that potential looks like with vitamin C. So I loved that. I can't wait to go into your natural sources of vitamin C. I'm really excited for that. And then your recipes that you came up with too. Yeah.
00:43:33
Speaker
um really great. Yeah. So it was a really fun course and it is for sale outside of the membership. So if you're part of the membership, it's obviously included. um the membership is only $47 per month. So you have access to all of those live calls, all the continuing education, the connection lounge that we have is really, really powerful. That's where you're just staying connected 24 seven and getting support 24 seven.
00:44:01
Speaker
And then that extra podcast episode every month. But some of our continuing education will now be sold separately. So the first one that is being sold separately is the vitamin C course. There's six different modules and many different supportive downloadables. Should you love that type of stuff? It does exist. And so so and that is $120 to buy that entire course, which is really exciting. So you can purchase that if you are not in the membership.
00:44:33
Speaker
And we'll put link in the show notes. Yeah. We'll put a link in the show notes for you. And, um, yeah. can't recommend it enough. Truly the vitamin C is just not a one size fits all. Uh, like it I even thought for several years. Um, and so it's just, it's really cool. It's really valuable. It's really impactful. It will change your aesthetics practice immensely by just deep diving into that one ingredient. Yeah.
00:45:04
Speaker
Yeah,

Embracing Aging and Personal Growth

00:45:05
Speaker
absolutely. All right, let's talk about turning 40. How was your birthday, Jess? My birthday was exactly what I would have wanted. um you know, I think it's, but I spent it by myself in the mountains and that's what I wanted. That was very much by choice. So I went on a camping trip and I left Friday morning.
00:45:31
Speaker
went and stacked my camping spot because it's obviously fourth of July weekend. I actually got one of the last spots available in the entire area. It wasn't the most amazing, you know, camping spot I've ever had, but I was like grateful to even get one.
00:45:45
Speaker
And i am a solo camper, solo hiker, solo adventurer. It's like a weird part of me that some people know about, some people don't, but So the first hike that I went on that day was a new one for me. And it was one of the most exquisite, pleasant, like lovely hikes I've ever done. It was 10 miles total. And it was just absolutely beautiful, just breathtaking. i loved it. And then um let's see Saturday on fourth of July, 14 miler.
00:46:26
Speaker
Dang. I know. And you know what? it It was brutal. Like there's no two ways about it. And I pack extra water. You know, i carry a firearm. I carry a lot of protection. And so my pack was like really heavy. I really was in the market for new boots for sure. Hiking boots matter so much. So by the end of that hike, I was, I was over it. Like I was very much ready to be done at the same time.
00:46:54
Speaker
you know There's just some mountains, some areas, some hikes where you feel transported. And it it literally just makes you forget that there's any sort of daily life or life that even exists out of that. It's just so beautiful. It's so majestic. You're so present because it's hard. You're in like crazy elevation.
00:47:18
Speaker
um you you have to be so cognizant of the weather and who's around you and animals. And it's not grizzly country where I'm at, which is great because I would not be comfortable doing that. But there's still like, there's stuff out there. And so you have to just be really aware. And I think that's the beautiful part about it is you're you're not thinking about much else. You're just like watching your footing, watching the weather. It's just this presence. And then you're in just, oh, this,
00:47:52
Speaker
most beautiful scenery you can ever even imagine. I mean, there's literally so many times that I'm like, how is this not a movie? but This is real. Like this is real. And it's just so incredible to me too. Sometimes I just like, I'll get to the top of a mountain and I'll get to my destination. And the first thought that I have is There are people who don't even know that this exists. Yeah. There are people, most people will never experience this. Like right here, right now this most beautiful thing you've ever seen in your life.
00:48:32
Speaker
Most peaceful, most beautiful, most majestic. And most people will never, never even know. Yeah. Never even know. So that was beautiful. So I did that was great. Went paddle boarding right after watched the fireworks that night. They were so late, like they didn't even start till like 1045. And I was exhausted. But it was really cool because the, you know, mountains are like in the background, and they're doing the fireworks. And it was really lovely. um And then yesterday morning, I was like, if I'm gonna
00:49:09
Speaker
If I'm going to hiking today, I have to buy new boots. And so for my birthday, bought myself some new hiking boots and then went on one of my favorite hikes. And um I actually fell asleep by the lake and it was the least busy that it's ever been up there, which was really cool.
00:49:28
Speaker
It was really peaceful. i totally took my bathing suit, got in the water and then just laid out and fell asleep for a little while. And then, uh, yeah, hiked back out and came home and yeah, there really is no other way that I would have loved to have celebrated my fortieth In fact, you will appreciate this. When I was hiking back out, I was playing free bird And i just like stopped and kind of took all of that in because it was such a i do love that like free bird. i love my freedom. i love that random wild side of me that most people don't even know exists. And um to also be celebrating my 40th and being in this place in my life, it was really, really cool.
00:50:15
Speaker
And I am celebrating with my family this week. Tiffany and I are celebrating our 40th, the first weekend in August. We have a girls trip planned and I have a couple of friend dinners coming up. But it was like that is exactly how I wanted to spend the actual day of my birthday. And it really was special. It's something I'll never forget.
00:50:37
Speaker
It sounds very sacred and like ceremonial in a way is what's coming to me like really, really special. Yeah, it was. I don't think that you could like even ask for a better day, especially, especially getting to just do it with you and like your soul, you know, and your favorite place in the whole world. yeah How very special. It was. Yeah, it was perfect. I'm so glad that I decided to do that. And I'm also really, you know and this is something I said on one of my social media pages, i really am so grateful for that.
00:51:11
Speaker
friends with My friends and family that just understand me, they just like they just get it and they let me be me and they don't question it. like If that's what she wants to do for her 40th birthday, there's no stopping her anyway. So let's let her go do that. And then we'll like make plans with her at some other point. And we're not going to worry about what whatever she's doing out there. You know what I mean? Yeah. um I think that that's really special. But i also had the thought too that like I'm grateful for my own courage to
00:51:43
Speaker
Yeah. Go do those things and like not wait around for other people to go do the things that I want to do or to have the courage to live in my authenticity that is just like, this is one of my favorite parts of me and I'm just going to go do it and like live out loud and do whatever I want to do because that feels so true to me. And, you know, celebrating my 40th is interesting. One thing that I've been thinking about for the past several months is,
00:52:11
Speaker
How grateful I am to have the people in my life that I do. I'm just like in this place where I have the most incredible friendships that I've ever had.
00:52:21
Speaker
Yeah. And I really haven't had that before. Like I've had a few really close friends, i'm always at a distance, you included, that it's like, yes, I can reach out anytime that I want. But, you know, here in Boise, I've never had close friendships, really. and I do now, like if I needed anything, there's a list of people that I could call that would...
00:52:44
Speaker
come immediately, no questions asked, right. Or to have people who are here locally, who are excited to celebrate my birthday with me. Yeah. I've just never like, that's not been a thing for me really. And a lot of it is because I've traveled around or i will kind of, um,
00:53:03
Speaker
keep like a professional, personal distance in some ways. But now I have some of these professional, personal relationships where we're good at separating the two. And so yeah we do have a very close personal relationship and it's different than the professional. And so I can spend time being with them outside of a workspace and being incredibly authentic and like real with them. And it's still totally cool to do that. I don't know. That is the one thing i will say that as I'm turning 40, I couldn't be more grateful for the relationships that I have in my life and just the amount of like,
00:53:41
Speaker
authenticity that I feel and just being very settled in who I am. And you and I both agree that that comes with age. I think yeah um I've loved getting older. It's the best thing that's ever happened to me. So a lot of people turning 40 don't love that so much. And I've been looking forward to it because I feel more like myself than I ever have. So every year that goes by, i feel happier. i feel more free You do tend to start caring less about what other people think.
00:54:13
Speaker
I don't know what that is with age, but I think it is the best part of it. And there's things that come with age, obviously. hormone replacement therapy is a thing in my life these days. I'm you know, there's there's definitely things that come with age, but I sure wouldn't trade it for anything. And i really love being a voice for women that like, I love getting older and I love to empower people through that and celebrate it because there are so many, I mean, men included, like most men that I'm close with, they don't like aging either. Yeah. But like, I love it. I have no problem with it. I accept it. i want more of it. Yes. There's things that come along with it, but I sure wouldn't trade it.
00:54:58
Speaker
Yeah. Same. Very much so. Well, i love like a privilege it is and I love that you say that too, because there's some people who, when I say that they're like, well, yeah, but you don't have kids.
00:55:11
Speaker
I don't think that though. I don't think that has that's like, maybe that's a part of it. But also, that's not what comes to mind for me. It's an internal thing. It's a decision that you make on the inside for you and your life kids are not.
00:55:26
Speaker
you know? Yeah. I mean, I agree too. Most of my friends that even have kids and are married, like they love getting older too. Like they have no resistance to it either, but some people do. And so, yeah I mean, if you're listening to me and you're like, yeah, Jess, but like, you're not married and you don't have kids and whatever.
00:55:44
Speaker
Yes, that's true. But i agree with you. i think it's an internal choice that you that you make, you can be empowered through the aging process for so many different beautiful reasons, or you can be really resistant to it. But like, why?
00:56:02
Speaker
Well, yeah And that's just, it is like resisting it. I think just causes more friction in your life and with your soul and because it's going to happen regardless. So why wouldn't you just embrace it? And like you said, be a voice for other women, especially, especially as an esthetician. I think that's just one of the most powerful, incredibly powerful, empowering positions to be in is to be a woman, be an esthetician and be a really, really strong role model for other women in your life, in your community, in your, you know, and it just goes out from there.
00:56:41
Speaker
No, I love that because that is, as estheticians, every woman, you know, and most men that get on the table, they're very resistant to aging. so yeah you know, being like kind of putting a hatchet in that conversation and saying like, oh, getting older is literally...
00:57:00
Speaker
the best thing that's ever happened to me. i love it You know, I'm so, so here for it and we can be empowered through it and we can age gracefully and let me help you, you know, do that. i think it just feels so much better than trying to work against it. And a lot of people do want to work against it and like have that resistance to it. But I think you will age so much more beautifully and gracefully if you accept it.
00:57:28
Speaker
It's true. And you can, i think we can all envision like, um, say like an older, you know, older woman in her seventies, eighties, who just radiates beauty.
00:57:41
Speaker
The, like, she has this light about her and you know, whether her hair is silver, whether she's got wrinkles, like that doesn't matter. She is literally the most beautiful creature from the inside out. And it's just like, I like yeah i see women like them, like, I want to be just like that. Like, it doesn't matter if she is like, so old. And so whatever, she just loves herself so much, that she's so beautiful. And she radiates that outward. And it's contagious. That is like, that is perfection to me. That is the goal that is, And I'm just like, why not embody that now? And that's the age I am, the state I'm in and all. And that's just going to continue to develop and grow as I age. I just like, there can't be anything more beautiful than that when you love yourself so much. And it really is an inside job, right?
00:58:32
Speaker
It's where it begins. And then it just goes outward from there. It does. And it doesn't mean I don't get Botox. you Right, right, were right, right. It doesn't i mean you don't get your monthly facial and you don't go to the gym and you don't still...
00:58:45
Speaker
care and work on your body and your mind and your being like that. There's that aspect to it too. Like we care and love about ourselves so much that we are going to dedicate time And energy to us. Yeah. and A couple of my very good friends just had lid lifts. You know, they're doing like upper bluffs and, you know, work on their neck and and whatever. One of them is 50 and one of them is, I want to say like 45-ish maybe. And I'm like, hell yeah, do that. so Yeah.
00:59:15
Speaker
It is like this inside job that we're talking about. And listen, like where I'm cougar status now, you guys. I don't know what this is about me and I'm not even enough afraid to talk about it. But like the amount 20, early 20 year olds that are after me is hilarious. It's been like the funniest part of turning 40.
00:59:40
Speaker
it's ah It's actually the way, way younger men that have the confidence to be hitting on me and want to like pull me you know, versus men that are my age, or even i would say if I had to put a number on it, like 30 and up, they don't have that same confidence. Like they can't even carry on a conversation and it's been the most funny thing, but I also, I think it's because I just really own it. Like I

Trusting Life's Process and Career Fulfillment

01:00:09
Speaker
really,
01:00:10
Speaker
I'm happy. i really love getting older. I have no issues with it whatsoever. And I've done so much internal work that there is something attractive about it. I think when you're just talking about...
01:00:24
Speaker
you know, magnetizing people, it it really is just about like the self love and the love that you have for yourself. And then you're able to give that love to other people. And i don't know, it's just it really has been one of the most interesting experiences, not the 20 year olds per se, but just like getting older and loving it and accepting it. And then watching how different people kind of like react to the way that I feel about it.
01:00:48
Speaker
Well, like that's the same thing to be said with these friendships that you have now, right? It's the same, same idea. Same thing as you've got this magnetism about you and this attraction, and you've done the self work to let your walls down and to be perfectly authentic you. And that's the magic in it right there is, um,
01:01:11
Speaker
Yeah, it's not been an overnight process for you and or me or anyone listening. Like that's not how that works. And I think it's a continual process. It's a continual self-work and devotion to your own self-love, however that looks for you. And but it is magnetic. It is attractive.
01:01:29
Speaker
It's, it's aspiring. Like it's, um it's contagious. I love it so much. And I love knowing you. I've loved watching you evolve. I, it inspires me to be like a better devoted person to my own self and being. um So yeah, I love having this conversation and thank you for sharing your birthday experience with us. because turning 40 is, it's a big one. It really is. And it does make you question, like as I am approaching in the next couple of weeks, my 40th birthday, I'm just like, it makes you look back, right?
01:02:02
Speaker
And then of course you're looking forward and then you're also looking at where you are now. And it does make you just like really look around and really ask yourself, am I on the right path? Am I making the right decisions? Are my decisions, my daily decisions aligning with my continued goals and what I really still want for my life. And um so it's just that, that reflection and that perspective as birthdays bring up for everyone. And, um, 40 is a big one and it's, it's beautiful and I wouldn't change it for the world. And I love being where we're at.
01:02:36
Speaker
and do too What do you, i mean, what other kind of internal feelings do you have about turning 40 now in a couple of weeks? Um, I think for me, i I'm really, um, like, am I in alignment And I know that I am, and I think it's all of the changes that I've had this year alone since, you know, over the last year calendar year, we'll call it, of like, I still don't really know fully like 100% like why.
01:03:11
Speaker
although I know with my whole heart and soul that it is the right path. Like I don't really know like what's to come for sure, but I do know that I'm on the right path. And I do know that the trust that I've had and the decisions that I've made are right. Does that make any sense? Absolutely.
01:03:27
Speaker
Yes, very much. And so I think just really leaning into that trust and really, really, really, really leaning into being present. Like that is my immediate goal for the summer is to be present right now, be present with my kids while they're out of school, even though it's added this whole layer of chaos to my life that I haven't had before because my kids have been littler before and really just anchoring into like this time is precious. I am so grateful for this time. it does feel and look a little chaotic and that's okay. and trusting that all of the work that I have poured into my life and my businesses at this point are secure.
01:04:06
Speaker
And it's been foundational work. And i feel like maybe, and I feel this way every summer that my businesses are going to a little bit of a rest stage so that I can be present and play with my kids and myself and pouring to myself. And there's always a layer like, okay, trusting that it's fine, that it actually needs to rest so I can play so I can rest so I can spend time with my kids and that. I'll get that creative energy again for it when the time comes, you know?
01:04:42
Speaker
Well, it makes me think back to the week before last week. Was it when your kids went to camp? Yeah. Yeah. Like it was such a weird thing for both of us. Like there was just this day where i was like, um I'm going to go to the mountains actually today. And I'm going to take nap by a lake and finish my book. And like, yeah, And then Tiffany was like, oh well, then I'm also going to take the day. And I'm like, you should. And it's so... um
01:05:17
Speaker
I don't think two or three years ago, either one of us would have allowed that to happen. Actually, actually that has been on my mind a lot. So yesterday I was thinking a lot about, you know, the fact that I'm in a place in my life now where I'm not in the mountains running away from anything. And it actually made me think about when I was. Like a lot of this was born from stress. A lot of this was actually born from...
01:05:43
Speaker
I've got to go reconnect with myself and get away and and whatever. and I don't really feel like that. Now I'm just doing it because i I really love that. But I do, I think years ago, neither one of us would have been like, you know what? going to take the day off. I'm not going to tell anyone that I'm taking the day off.
01:06:02
Speaker
but You know, I'm just going to get in the car and see... where, where I land or I'm gonna, you know, not work. I'm gonna take a bath. I'm gonna do whatever. And so it is a really good place to be. And I think we both understand that's not realistic for everybody. We've worked yeah very hard to make this a reality. And I had to do it because I was getting physically sick from all the stress that I you know, had created in my life for so long that it took years for me to then undo that and build a new foundation so that I could be able to just take some time and not have so much stress and like um obligation, I guess. not that i don't Not that we don't love what we do because we do, but We've both
01:06:58
Speaker
been in places where um There was just like that guilt and that obligation. And what am I trying to say?
01:07:08
Speaker
um yeah I think we've worked really hard and we still work hard. And you and I are both busier than we've ever been. i can't confidently say like even a few years ago, i thought I was busy. And like, actually my schedule more packed now.
01:07:23
Speaker
And I'm at a place where I can like leave work at work. and, and, or take the day off and not feel like I still have to like be connected or be pouring into my social media, or i can take a break from social media and not have that guilt or that FOMO of like, I'm going to lose it all if I take a few days away from it.
01:07:45
Speaker
That's just a different, it's just a different mindset. Like, yes, we're busier than we've ever been. And we're in a place where we have a different mindset around the work that we love and do. And because we've done that work and that healing and that continued devotion to ourselves that, um, it's just like, this is 40 and this is it's incredible. Like I can't recommend it enough. Like if you fear getting older, Just trust that it gets better because with that age comes wisdom yeah where you're like, the shit that I used to stress about actually doesn't matter.
01:08:17
Speaker
Yes. No, 100%. think that is a lot of it. It's just that you kind of get to a point where... you're like, Oh, it's actually not that serious. Yeah. It's really not an emergency. Everything always works out. Everything really is okay. Um, I also am not afraid to burn it all down either. And I am going to great lengths to get my freedom back. And I just don't care anymore. I'm like, you know what? I don't need to make as much money. i just, I don't,
01:08:49
Speaker
And my freedom is what I value more than anything. is like high quality life freedom because I have been through. So I've been to hell multiple times and back, especially in the last few years that I've come to that realization. Like life is way too short. Yeah.
01:09:08
Speaker
And I just want a high quality life. I want to be happy. I want freedom. i want peace. I want joy. And nothing matters to me as much as that. And going to build a career that is going to work with me on that.
01:09:20
Speaker
Well, exactly. That's the whole point is like, now you and I are in a place and this is where we're passionate about helping other estheticians and just other women. I think in general of like, you build the career around your beautiful life and not the other way around. Cause that's how I built, I built, I built my life around the career. Cause the career was, I was so focused and then my life was on on the outside and that's where I went to burnout. That's where I was like,
01:09:46
Speaker
could not function, you know what i mean? And then I did burn it all down. And you and I have burned it all down several times. And I'm not afraid to and and I wouldn't never be afraid to again, because I actually know that's sometimes where the magic is or where the answer lies. But truly, like, we're so committed to this life that we want and love that the career now fits inside the beautiful life.
01:10:09
Speaker
Absolutely. Yeah. And that's the whole point of this. That's the point of this conversation. That's the whole point of bringing you, our listener into these conversations is to help you do the same. We like, we could not be more passionate about helping you get to a place of, yes, you're going to chase your dreams and you've got big goals and big vision, and we're going you get there. and You're still going to have a life because that's the whole point of having a really purposeful career is to have a really beautiful, passionate life that you love that you're not trying to escape from. Yes.
01:10:43
Speaker
Absolutely. Yeah. So much. Yes. So much. Yes. So let's just take a few minutes. And i thought we could each share like our best piece of advice to any esthetician. It doesn't have to be a new esthetician by any means. It can just be any esthetician. Yes. We're 40 and I've been an esthetician for 22 years. Tiff has been an esthetician for about 15 years. And so um I thought we could each just take a few minutes in celebration of our birthdays and just share professional wisdom with you. I think what we just shared is probably the best professional wisdom we could ever heard share. um But just to go a little bit beyond that. So what comes to mind for you? If you could just give any esthetician like the best piece of advice for their career, what would that be? Yeah.
01:11:46
Speaker
um my What has come to mind for this the answer to this question is to really enjoy the ride while you're on it I think. And that sounds really broad, but let me let me explain. of like You know that saying, like these are the good old days, but you don't really realize you're in the goal good old days when you're in them? Mm-hmm.
01:12:08
Speaker
I think that's my best advice of now being an esthetician for almost 15 years and looking back at my career and like every stage had a stage, but I didn't realize it at the time. And every stage was so monumental. Every stage was purposeful.
01:12:25
Speaker
Every stage had really great value in it And i don't know, especially in those early years, I don't know if I really enjoyed it while I was there, but even like two or three or four years ago, i was, I had my nose to the ground and I was grinding so hard. I don't think I enjoyed it like I could have or probably should have because I was always onto the next. I was always like, this isn't good enough. I'm not there yet. And I was so, think could get actually, I'm getting a little bit emotional about it.
01:13:05
Speaker
I like didn't give myself credit for where i was at And now looking back, I'm like, man, I was doing such good things. I still am. Like, I'm not saying like it's over or that I didn't enjoy it, but like, I was so hard on myself, so hard on myself. And I, it was never good enough. and now I can look back and be like, man, that was so beautiful. i actually accomplished really great things.
01:13:35
Speaker
And I didn't enjoy it like I could have or should have. And that is my best advice for anyone that's listening is like where you are right now is purposeful. Where you are right now is where you're meant to be. It's okay to still want bigger things for yourself in your life and your career. And take a moment to enjoy it because it also again is like fleeting. Like time is a little bit fleeting. And I think this is, I get so emotional my birthday month, you guys.
01:14:03
Speaker
It's a part of it. and It's coming. i just do. I get, I get emotional and it's all great emotions, but my emotions are so raw around my birthday every year.
01:14:16
Speaker
They're just right at the surface and um time is fleeting a little bit because it's just like you think it's gonna last forever. You think the stage you're in is gonna kind of last forever and then you get further down the road and you're like, holy cow. I didn't even recognize the transition when I was in it, but here I am on the other side of a transition that like, it's not the same as it was.
01:14:38
Speaker
And so presence is just such a huge component of that and being grateful for where you are and trusting in the divine timing of the universe that you will even even if you want more, even if you're not content with where you're at, trying to just accept where you are, that it's meant to be, it's serving you and enjoy it. Like give it gratitude, recognize it, like sit down and actually look around and give your conscious presence to it and just recognize where you're at.
01:15:16
Speaker
And, um that's my best advice. I don't know. It's, It's just, it's incredible how fast time goes. And I think we're all doing incredible things. I think as an esthetician, it's a spiritual experience for every esthetician. It's a spiritual industry, whether you recognize it or choose to recognize it or not, it is, it's great, powerful work. And so um just bring attention to where you're at and enjoy it and don't be so hard on yourself.
01:15:51
Speaker
oh I love that so much. Thank you so much for sharing that. Yeah. it's What is yours? We're cancers. We're emotional babies.
01:16:04
Speaker
Tiffany knows I was crying my eyes out for a long time yesterday. You know, it's funny because I was going to say something different, but I'm actually going to piggyback off of that because that just took me down memory lane too.
01:16:18
Speaker
One thing that I love about this career and why i love giving back to this industry is because there's so many different paths and journeys within your own journey as an esthetician.
01:16:36
Speaker
And I've done it all. I've been on every single one of those paths and every single one of them led me to where I am today.
01:16:48
Speaker
And so my best advice and something that I do share when I'm doing presentations and just talking about my career is being open to the next and not being afraid to take risks in your career. Yeah.
01:17:09
Speaker
My career has been such a crazy journey and not every esthetician has to walk the path that I did, but I'm so effing glad that I did. That was my journey and it was meant for me. Do you know what I mean? And there were so just to lay it out briefly. i mean, I started in, I'm master a master esthetician. And so I thought that I would go into something just a little bit more spa-ish.
01:17:39
Speaker
And then I ended up falling in love with facials. I just wanted to do facials all day long. So I ended up in the resort industry and I loved it. And then when I was approached with the idea of being an instructor,
01:17:52
Speaker
I was like, no, I could never, like, I'm not good enough. I don't know enough. I couldn't be an instructor, but I said, yes. And then that changed everything.
01:18:03
Speaker
Right. And because then from there, I was now the lead esthetician and an instructor. And that's when reps started to approach me about being a rep or kind of going in a different direction.
01:18:16
Speaker
Same thought. No, I could never do that. I'm not good enough for that. You know, no, I, I, that's not for me. Then I was giving the opportunity and I said, yes.
01:18:27
Speaker
And I packed up my entire life in Southern Utah. In fact, I left an apartment, fully furnished apartment, packed up my cat, packed up what I could take in my car, drove to Arizona, had nowhere to live.
01:18:41
Speaker
had a part-time job that I had said yes to, but there was the opportunity for me to be a trainer for eminence. And so i was like, sure, I'll go figure that out now, you know, because i just knew that that was the right thing

Taking Risks and Embracing Change

01:18:54
Speaker
to do. I just knew that was somehow, even though I didn't think I was good enough or ready for it, I also was like, yes, you know, so did that whole thing for four years Same thing happens again. Now there's this other opportunity for me to come home to my home state of Idaho.
01:19:13
Speaker
And again, like nowhere where to live. I actually took a job here making less money.
01:19:21
Speaker
Packed up what I could actually ended up putting most of my stuff in storage and selling the rest of my stuff and moved into my parents' basement with my cat. And was like, I don't know that, you know, these risks that I've taken, have not made sense.
01:19:38
Speaker
Right. And I think that that's the key sometimes in our careers when it comes to our growth is just knowing that there's a next and being presented with an opportunity and feeling that out and saying, yes, there's so many people that say no, you know, because it doesn't make sense or they can't see the other side of it.
01:20:01
Speaker
And I think the fact that I've just been so willing to say, even though I can't see, I'm going to say yes. And I'm going to risk it all and see what happens. And so it's really been my not fearing taking risks that have gotten me to where i am today, whether, you know, but i mean, I've relocated twice and started my life over twice. ah And it's worked out really well. It's, you know, it's been a lot of work. And obviously, there's stress that comes along with that. But in an industry where there are so many different opportunities available to you, I think it's really important that you have the openness to what is next so that when the opportunities present them themselves, you can take that risk if necessary and just kind of keep following that path. And um I think the presence aspect is so important too, because there's so many times in my journey and so many times in estheticians journeys that we work with where they are so stuck on what's next, but I'll tell you guys why I was so happy living in my parents' basement.
01:21:17
Speaker
It was really nice to have my meals made. I couldn't wait to be back out on my own, but it was crazy that I still, I was like, I don't even know when I'm going to be able to do that. Like I'm really not making any money. So I don't know what's going to happen.
01:21:32
Speaker
And it's so crazy. i I actually think about that at least once a week, like the amount of um faith that I had in that risk that I took But, you know, it's it's really funny how it really has been those times where it was like post-divorce, renting a bedroom from this crazy woman just so that I could, you know, be living in the same town where I was working that I was like the happiest, you know, or like I'm living in my parents' basement. And like those are the memories that I really cherish the most is, And I had the presence at the time to know that there is an end in sight.
01:22:13
Speaker
And it's totally cool to just be here right now too. Like that's totally fine. And so it has allowed me to just enjoy every step of the journey, even when things were crazy and I didn't know how things were going to work out. I was like, it's fine. Everything like I trust this. And so i think my best piece of advice really is to not be afraid to take risks and say yes to opportunities as they come and to not hold yourself back, even if something doesn't quite make sense, or you can't quite see like the whole big picture, you know, just yet, that's okay. You don't need to, you just need to, you know, evolve and stay open and not be afraid to make big moves and take big risks. And I'm still doing it. Yeah. I'm still doing it and figuring it out because of of the willingness. And that's how I've gotten to where I am today. And I'm so, so, so grateful for that. And I don't think anybody's stories need to be as crazy as mine or will be as crazy as mine. But what it has taught me is to help other estheticians evolve in their career and say yes and take messy action and figure it out as you go. Because when there is that calling, And this work is very spiritual. And I think that's like where beyond aesthetics really our foundation is like, this is personal and spiritual. And the work that we do is really, really special. And you're going to grow and evolve with that. And we're helping our clients, you know, evolve and giving back to them and the service and the the spiritual basis of our industry is really real. Again, like whether you realize that or not so
01:23:56
Speaker
Yeah, I guess that's my my actual best advice, which was very, very different than what I was going to say. It's really beautiful. And it's really, i think it just reminds me to like, be courageous. Just like your story about you go on solo camping trips, and you're not afraid to do that. And you're going to do it anyway, so that you can live your life and see the places that you want to see and not wait for anyone's permission to do it. the same thing thing can be applied to your career. you know, you're not gonna, you're not afraid what anyone thinks you didn't care, or maybe you did, but you don't know about having to move into your parents' basement and relocating your life. And you just did it anyways. And like feeling the fear and doing it anyways is real and not taking those risks and leaps of faith and not knowing like when or where your wings are going to catch you is where truly the magic happens. it's It's scary and it's exciting and it's thrilling and it's truly like, I think that's where the progress lies on
01:25:07
Speaker
when offered opportunities are always arising, always for each and every one of us around the whole entire world, there's endless opportunities. There's just abundant um avenues and roads that we can take. And like, those are never going to run out. It's just our own perspective and our own choice to see them or take them.
01:25:27
Speaker
That really is what matters. you know,

Simplifying Life and Celebrating Milestones

01:25:31
Speaker
what that is making me think of too, is that it's also okay to simplify things. It's also like having the courage and taking the risk of actually taking a step in a direction.
01:25:46
Speaker
ah My best example is there's actually a lot of estheticians I've worked with who go from being solo to being like, you know what? I don't really want to do this anymore. This is like a lot of work, you know? So sometimes it's, you're ready to go solo. Sometimes that's, you know what? i don't really want to be solo anymore.
01:26:03
Speaker
actually want to go work for someone else. That sounds really nice. Or for me, I, um, I've simplified really drastically. I've actually taken a lot off of my plate and I am making less money and I'm so much happier. Right. And so for me, that's another. so it doesn't have to look like you're always moving like onwards and and upwards in a way that you think.
01:26:29
Speaker
you know, is like a linear thing. It's like, actually, it's also a good idea to simplify and to take a step back and make changes that add to the quality of your life too. So it it can look so many different ways. It's not always about what's the next big thing. It's actually what's what's the next thing that could bring me the most joy and peace and freedom and fulfillment.
01:26:55
Speaker
Absolutely. So it can look so many different ways. So many different ways. And I think like for me, a little extra piece of advice is like not just chasing the dollar and thinking there's only one uh, Avenue, the dollar can come from. And like you said, simplifying and really, choosing quality of life and then trusting that that abundance is going to come maybe in a different way and ways that you don't expect or ways that it didn't come before. And it's still going to work out in your favor. And it's actually going to work out in your favor better because that quality of life matters more. Yes, absolutely.
01:27:33
Speaker
Absolutely. Yeah. Tasty. Juicy. yeah
01:27:42
Speaker
So juicy. Well, thank you so much for sharing all of that. And yeah, I love that. Love this conversation. What a great way to celebrate us turning 40.
