Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everyone and welcome back to the Daily Ipswich, part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. This is a very quick Newcastle preview.

Preview of the Newcastle Match

00:00:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We had the crossover with the with the Newcastle guys yesterday with Rob.
00:00:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
My name's Richard Popple. I'm on my own today. I'm on my own. I'm at work and I'm going to record a very quick little pod for you guys just before the weekend. Newcastle. Newcastle United we have away from home. St James' Park. We've not been there for a very, very long time.
00:00:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah The Bobby Robson derby, however else you want to want to call it. But it's ah it's a very intimidating place to go at the best of times, and particularly when Newcastle are in a reasonable bit of form, the last game aside, I suppose.
00:00:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a Saturday kickoff, so it's going to be tomorrow afternoon, 3 nice um Nice classic time there. And yeah, what can I say?

Challenges Facing Ipswich at Newcastle

00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's going to be a pretty um difficult trip for us, not least because you look at our injury list, which is kind of absurd at this point. So we're missing Filagene with a knee problem. Murek is out with a shoulder. Not sure if that's too much of an issue, really.
00:01:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wes Burns has got a knee issue. Ogbené, of course, is out for the season. Sammy Schmodek's probably as well with his ankle. Hutchinson is still out, potentially. Calvin Phillips and Nathan Broadhead. um Obviously, Leif Davis is going to be suspended as well.
00:01:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Connor Townsend apparently has a bit of a thigh problem. Now, look, I am recording this on Thursday at lunchtime. So I'm sure there's going to be information coming from McKenna.
00:01:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah either later today or tomorrow about the state of the squad. But needless to say, we've got our fair share of injuries at the moment, ah which makes going to Newcastle an even more difficult challenge than it already was.

Newcastle's Inconsistent Form

00:02:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
For their part, I mean, Newcastle have been... absolutely superb this year or kind of very, very beatable. And they've taken some pretty big drubbing themselves. But of course the big news for them really is that Eddie Howe seems to have recovered from, from the pneumonia and stuff and his, his um unfortunate visit to hospital over the last couple of weeks in which they've actually done okay, really. But um yeah, it's good that Eddie Howe is a,
00:02:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
feeling better and he's going to be back in the dugout hopefully at the weekend that's been the reports this week so that will be a big big buoyance to Newcastle in terms of like the fallout of what this is going to be we all know we're 15 points behind West Ham it's a mathematical miracle in improbable set of situations that would allow us to survive we're not going to survive everyone let's be brutally honest about that and and I would imagine that by five o'clock on Saturday hour relegation and return to the championship will be confirmed.

Newcastle's Standings and Opportunities

00:03:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I suppose, you know, Rob and I talked about this at the start of the week, what's left to play for and all the rest of it. Obviously for this game, there is much more for Newcastle to play for than Ipswich.
00:03:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle are currently fifth. They're a point outside the top four. Again, it's not incredibly clear about how many Champions League places are going to be up for grabs in the Premier League, but five is is looking likely. So they are two points ahead of Chelsea and Villa at the moment.
00:03:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
who absolutely pounded them in their last game 4-1. ah Before that, obviously, Newcastle were kind of flying. They smacked Man United. They beat Crystal Palace 5-0. They beat Leicester 3-0. So they were really flying and they've they've scored a lot of goals this year.
00:03:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But like I say, they they have also lost 10 games as well. So they've they've been a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde team. When they're good, they are very, very good and probably one of the most difficult teams to play in the league.
00:03:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
as we found out at Portman road when they smacked us four nil. Um, but when they're bad, they, they do get beaten, uh, fairly comfortably

Weaknesses and Strengths of Newcastle

00:04:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
as well. And actually they've got a few injury issues as well. I know Sven Botman and, the sellers are out, both their center halves are out.
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think Fabian share, maybe, um, maybe nursing a bit of an injury too. So I'm not sure if he's going to be sent to back, uh, availability for him this week. So you might see a meal craft come in.
00:04:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, as an emergency sort of sort of centre-half in there for them but you know At the back, yes, you can get at them. Whether Ipswich have the firepower to to cause them any problems, i'm i'm I'm not too sure. But it's going forward where Newcastle are really dangerous. you know that Their midfield is, I think, potentially the best three in the league, maybe. Along with Liverpool, you have to say.
00:04:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think Bruno Gimérez, Tonoli and Joe Linton are physical They are powerful. They're athletic. They are kind of all of the things that the Ypswich midfield isn't.
00:05:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And i think if they're on it, they're going to eat us alive in the middle of the park. So that's that's my concern. And then obviously up front, they've got pace and power as well. They've got... probably the best centre forward in the league in Alexander Izak, who has scored, I think, 15 goals in 14 appearances against promoted clubs. So he he likes to um he likes to feast on the ah on the smaller minnows in the league.
00:05:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there's every likelihood that he's going to be able to do that again this weekend. And then, you know, in the wide positions, they've got pace with, you know, the likes of Harvey Barnes and Murphy and... Gordon, depending on who's available. So Newcastle pose a massive threat. We all know that.
00:05:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, we saw them at Portman Road earlier in the season. and I mentioned earlier that, you know, that 4-0 defeat that we suffered. And I actually think, looking back, that was the first... Aside from Man City early on, where I think we lost on the second day game of the season, which feels like an absolute lifetime ago, back in August last year, i think the Newcastle game at home, where we really did get pumped, and they weren't amazing at that time. They'd been on a decent run of form, but again, they'd been a bit up and down, like they like they kind of have throughout the season.

Previous Encounters with Ipswich

00:06:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that game, I think, just showed us what what we were dealing with, really, in the Premier League. The golfing class was massive that day. You know, our defence looked very, very shaky. We looked small compared to other teams. We looked kind of a lack of mobility, a lack of physicality.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Two things that I think, yeah particularly as I mentioned in in midfield, has kind of cost us all year. So that is the concern going into this game. And look, you know, I don't want to be negative about this thing, but I'm on my own here. So I'm i'm kind of letting letting my kind of...
00:06:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
and my thoughts just roll with this really. And I think Newcastle away, given, you know, the the fragility probably of our confidence levels at the moment and the,
00:07:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, obvious fragility of our performance levels as well ah is not great. We're coming off a a heavy defeat against Arsenal, you know, another team that made us look extremely ordinary, unfortunately, last week.
00:07:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, there's a concern that Newcastle may do that again. um Anyway, look, let's take a little quick break and then we'll talk about maybe how Town might be lining up for the weekend.

Ipswich's Lineup and Struggles

00:08:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And welcome back to the daily Ipswich. So, yeah, Ipswich, how are we going to be lining up at the weekend? Like I said, we have an extensive injury list, which the kind of isn't really going to get any better um until the end of the season, ah looking at it.
00:08:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, Leif Davis has the red cards, which means he's going to be suspended, I think, for three games because it was a straight red, I think. um But if Townsend is injured too, then...
00:08:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
and he And he does. He's got up he's got a 25% chance, apparently, of being available for this. So the people who are definitely ruled out, Wes Burns, Philogene, Ogbene, Davis, because he's suspended, Sammy Schmodix, Hutchinson, Phillips, Moorich.
00:08:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nathan Broadhead and Connor Townsend have a 25% chance, apparently, of being available. this is This is according to a Premier League injuries website. So this is not an official thing from the club, but it gives us a bit of ah an indication of of where we might be. So if the worst comes to the worst then and Townsend is out, I would imagine that Townsend are going to line up with...
00:09:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palmer in goal, obviously. Two-hands AB right back. O'Shea and Greaves in the centre and maybe Burgess on the left. So maybe we can have our own massive centre-back on the left-hand side like Newcastle will do with Dan Byrne.
00:09:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Maybe we can just copy their line-up, essentially. So I would imagine Burgess will probably come in as left-back. and Maybe that means that Tuanzabi can shift forward a little bit.
00:09:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Essentially, we're doing a Pep Guardiola with that. we're We're starting with four centre backs across the back four. um We haven't done that this season, so maybe that'll work. I mean, we might as well try some new things given but our plight and and and kind of the fact that, you know, we are all but relegated already.
00:09:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's probably how the back four, I would imagine, will be lining up in midfield. I mean, what can you do? There aren't really any options unless you start Jack Taylor. um maybe Maybe you could start Jack Taylor. Maybe you could go Taylor and Kiyuste.
00:10:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I imagine it will be Morsi and Kiyuste. I don't know. I mean, we we we kind of know that it hasn't worked. We know that it's not working at this level. um But at this stage of the season, fundamentally, are you going to drop your captain?
00:10:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Probably not. Morsi actually was all right against um Arsenal. we actually had that bursting run forward in the... in the second half when they've taken their foot off the gas and stuff. And, so you know, I'm not having a go at Sam Morsi here, but we have quite clearly seen that the level that we need to get to in the centre of the pitch is not what we have in the squad. too um So maybe it is a case of looking at Taylor and thinking, does he have a role to play next season?
00:10:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think you're only going to find out if he's on the pitch. and If not, then maybe you move on from him as well. And and obviously we'll talk... once the season's over and and later in the summer about what town need to do in the centre of the pitch because I think that is the area of the squad that needs the most overhaul and ah is likely where the budget will probably go this summer and given that, yeah, that that just it just hasn't worked at all. And I think that has been ultimately the crux of our problems because the connection between the defence and the midfield and and generally the team being able to move through the pitch just hasn't been there all year.
00:11:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
um so yeah i i imagine it will be more z and q stay but maybe there is an argument to play uh taylor And then in the in the forward line, yeah, i I guess you look at the four that played against Chelsea.
00:11:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Did Jack Clark start that day? I can't remember if Jack Clark started that day or Broadhead started that day. Anyway, I don't think Broadhead will start given the injury. So I think he'll be on the bench is the most likely thing.
00:11:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I would imagine it will be Ben Johnson, Julien Nciso in the number 10 again, and Jack Clark on the left-hand side. um Hurst has obviously started the last two games. I don't think he'll start this one.
00:12:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think if you are going to hurt Newcastle, it is right in the centre of the pitch at the back because because of the absentees I've already mentioned. So it's a day where Liam DeLapp can just be let off the leash and can go and barrel into some people and see if he can cause some mayhem.

Anticipated Impact of Liam DeLapp

00:12:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if we took the lead in this game. I mean, given the given the fact that we have taken the lead in many, many games this season, I could kind of see Newcastle being a little bit off it to begin with and De Lappe doing something Liam De Lappe-like and maybe, you know, scoring a wonder goal or, you know, just driving through the middle of the pitch and and creating something out of nothing, which he which he obviously has done a fair few times this season.
00:12:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
It would be great to see because we are potentially in the last month of watching him in an Ipswich Town shirt. So um let's hope we get ah we get a classic de Lapp moment. So I think that's probably how we line up.
00:13:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just a bit on Georgie Hurst, because apparently Town are in ah early sort of discussions with him about extending his contract. I think he's actually been, i spoke about this on another pod, I think with Tom last week, where I actually think he's been one of our more impressive players

Contract Talks for Georgie Hurst

00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
this year. I think every every time he's come into the team and had the opportunity to either start game or come on he actually has been really effective. I think he's still a bit rough around the edges, Hurst.
00:13:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think the problem for him in his career is that he's not played enough football fundamentally. So, know, even though he's 25, 26 or whatever he is he's he probably should have played, ah you know, a hundred more games by this point in his career than he has. And that's, you know, due to being at bigger clubs where he wasn't given the opportunities and then getting injured, ah um you know, points in the season, which have have taken him out of of contention and stuff.
00:13:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think generally speaking, he he has really acquitted himself really, really well. And I think that'd be great for for the club because, you know, we do expect that De Lapp, you know, I would say it's an 80% chance Liam DeLapp goes, maybe if not more than that. um We don't know what the what the actual fee will be. Obviously, at this stage, there's loads of rumours that it's 30 million, but you know we we hope it's more. But anyway, if Hurst does sign a new contract over the summer, I think that's going to be a massive fillet for the club and and hopefully they can get that done.
00:14:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think that's how we're gonna line up. um We'll take one more quick break and then we'll come back and I'll give you my prediction for the game.
