Introduction and Brighton's Success

00:00:10
officialgspn
Hello and welcome to the GSPN Daily Brighton Podcast. It's me, Jamie, yet again, and I am joined by my favourite co-host, Blessings Chabamba. How are you doing, Bless?
00:00:24
blessings
Yeah, I'm good, thank you. I feel like Joe and Rich are going to have a few things to say about that intro.
00:00:29
officialgspn
like
00:00:30
blessings
But to know what, I'll take it.
00:00:32
officialgspn
They can message me in the spare time. We might have had some beef, who knows. But we are still flying high from Brighton being top of the league or joint top with Man City and a couple of others. But we are here to talk about the tactics that were deployed during our win against Manchester United and some of the standout

JP Van Hecke's Defensive Mastery

00:00:54
officialgspn
players. And there were a lot of standout players, if I don't say so myself.
00:00:58
officialgspn
We're going to start off with JP Van Hecke, a Brighton fan's favourite. He is kind of going under the radar, I feel, in general footballing terms, in the Premier League as a whole. I feel like he's so overlooked and very underrated. I think he is slowly emerging as one of the better centre-backs in the Premier League. Bless, what do you say to that?
00:01:28
blessings
Yeah, I think yesterday was really interesting because he yeah he absolutely dominated them quite a lot of the the game. And United didn't have a focal point, but he's still, he's making tackles and stepping into midfield. He's really impressed me. And I think what's one noticeable change of notes is him. He used to be a little bit skinnier, I'm pretty sure. He's filled out a little bit. And he's really put himself about, he's, yeah, he's tackling is brilliant. He does slide a lot. Remember, I've spoken on previous podcasts about slide tackles.
00:02:03
blessings
I don't believe in them, but um yeah he gets a ball so that doesn't matter. So yeah, he's he's really impressive. Do you think now, can we say he's our best centre back?
00:02:17
officialgspn
I think, I think, yeah, he is the start of this season in particular in the first two games. I know it's a very short sample size, but I think he has been by far our best defender as a whole and a central defender. I think he is the mainstay of the back four. I think we can't not play with him in it. ah yesterday oh Saturday's performance against Man United and against Rashford when he came up against him, he was dominant. like every Rashford could not get past him. There were through balls going into Rashford for Rashford to run onto. Van Hecke was getting there first. There was times where I think it was like in the 16th minute I think
00:02:59
officialgspn
Gilmore gave the ball away and it popped out to Rashford. Rashford saw Van Hecker, probably kind of licked his lips a little bit thinking I might have the beating of this guy and Van Hecker just stood his ground, solid tackle in there and that was persistent throughout the whole 90 minutes. Rashid's probably going home having nightmares about Van Echo because that was an absolute world-class performance. ah ah He got a yellow card but and that was the only thing that brought his rating down and even that was like a bit of guts and like ah him and Martin had squared up to each other and you kind of love to see, I'm not gonna lie, I was thinking, come on mate, hit him.
00:03:44
officialgspn
think
00:03:44
blessings
Yeah, hope I'm glad he didn't hit him, to be honest, because that would have been a straight red.
00:03:47
officialgspn
That

Billy Gilmour's Midfield Influence

00:03:49
officialgspn
means nothing.
00:03:50
blessings
But yeah, no it's so good to see, because like Martinez is now getting this repetition of being a bit of a hard man.
00:03:57
officialgspn
to
00:04:00
blessings
So when Van Hecke sort of pops his chest down and stands up against him, it's brilliant to see, not backing down. um But what another thing that impressed me um because how he is on the ball, which I think is so important for what Hurst is trying to do.
00:04:19
blessings
We noticed that a lot of the time they're trying to bait the press. So you have to be decent on the ball if you're going to try and bait people to close you down. And yeah, some of his passes, which is brilliant, he's tidy and looked off the ball quite well.
00:04:33
officialgspn
and Yeah, especially in today's football where so much of centre back play is being comfortable in the ball and is kind of just carrying the ball, finding those right passes, playing between the line or passing it between the lines, not being scared of doing that either. He didn't feel like he lost possession barely any any times really and there were moments as well where he just carried it through the midfield when there wasn't an option available it was great to see like someone be that comfortable 24 years old he's still got a long career ahead of him hopefully at Brighton as well hopefully we don't sell him anytime soon but hey he's someone that I think going into the season I was
00:05:19
officialgspn
and preview podcast can probably vouch for this, but I was saying we need a centre back. I still think we do need a centre back, but if Van Hecker can keep carrying the side and putting in these performances, I think we don't need a centre back.
00:05:35
officialgspn
Maybe there are other positions that we need that are more vital.
00:05:40
officialgspn
The other standout player defensively as well that I thought was
00:05:40
blessings
Yeah.
00:05:45
officialgspn
Billy Gilmour, do you think this is a performance for Billy Gilmour or but Billy Gilmour kind of looked at and thought this is my chance to show I'm worth keeping and do you think it was a ah performance that now us Brighton fans can look at and go let's keep him why why are we looking to sell him or what let's reject any offers that come in?
00:06:08
blessings
Yeah, I think, yeah, it was absolutely impressive performance. Personally, i'll I'll say keep him, because I don't think there's any other midfielders who are as good at, you know, receiving it on the half-turn, playing it forward as Billy Gilmour. The other ones are a bit more, I'd say, like, destroyers that break into things, like Milner, obviously, is a runner. Belieber looked quite good, actually, when he came on, but he's also not the... not necessarily the type of player to like control the tempo of a game. And what they were doing in build up as well um with either just Billy Gilmore holding and coming in or Hinchwood inverting a little bit, you have to be a smart footballer to like know your triggers and what's going to happen next. um But also, it's
00:07:03
blessings
having that much pressure on you because if you lose it in that midfield, bear in mind if you saw when Milner was going, he was quite far away from Gilmore at times, if you lose it, then they're in. So it's a lot of pressure and I thought he he dealt with that so well and had a really good game.
00:07:22
blessings
um So i think I think keep him for now because there isn't enough time to get a replacement as well um and he's very useful in games that like at home where Brighton would probably dominate most of the ball.
00:07:35
officialgspn
Yeah, it was I think he is a perfect player to have as a backup to Matt Swiffer. And I feel like backup after that performance is a harsh thing to say. I don't think he i don't think we can bench him next week after that performance that he put in. But Matt Swiffer picked up a knock, I think late on in the week and it was Billy Gilmore that kind of had to start. It wasn't probably out of the Hertzler's choice of starting, but he came on. He put on a it put in a performance that was mightily impressive. There were some stats here that he won
00:08:09
officialgspn
three out of three tackles that he played. And one of them was, like we mentioned on yesterday's pod, the vital one to tackle Bruno Fernandez as he was kind of breaking away, um to which finally led to our first goal. others Other ones were vital as well. There were five recoveries that he made, six out of 10 ground jewels that he won. He was covering ground as well. like his work ethic, his work rate was something something to behold and something that is good for Brighton Fantasy in terms of that want and that commitment that he kind of put in.
00:08:44
blessings
Yeah, we normally, um like when we're thinking about Billy Gilman, we don't think about his tackles or his defensive play, but yesterday's performance, um he really did show how how well he can adapt. He got stuck in so much and it was it was impressive to see that he can do that.
00:09:04
officialgspn
Do you think it's because of the opposition that we're against? Because obviously Bruno Fernandez is quite frail as well, or similar in size to Gilmour. He probably looked at him and thought, I've got the beating of this guy, physically maybe, that I can actually put in these tackles and shrug him off the ball.
00:09:21
blessings
Well, I mean, again, like you said earlier, very small sample size. just We're basing off one game, but it'd be interesting to see if we can still get stuck in against other players.
00:09:31
blessings
But at least he's trying because at the end of the day, he is what, like five foot four?
00:09:31
officialgspn
Yeah.
00:09:37
blessings
He's a short guy. and he
00:09:38
officialgspn
That's what we're doing with this service. I mean, you might be about five foot seven inches matter.
00:09:45
blessings
Yeah, yeah. um But yeah, it'll be interesting to see how it gets on against other teams. um That's the start of the bid again. I thought I'd never see, but we saw it yesterday.
00:09:55
officialgspn
Yeah, 100%. And after the break, we're going to be talking about some of our attacking players and what they brought to the table or what they didn't bring to the table. Maybe bless has got to eat some humble pie. See you after the break.
00:10:10

00:11:02
officialgspn
TNT Sports, man of the match and what a performance it was. It was almost like his coming out party and that is the man Zhao Pedro. Bless, what did you make of his performance?
00:11:15
blessings
Yeah, I thought he was he was brilliant. I thought um he his play in and around the box is just so good. And what really impressed me is the way he can hold the ball up. not by I mean, he's quite tall and no not necessarily a big frame, but he's dribbling so good that he can just hold that ball up. And when it does come to him, it sticks. um And what they do as well um in terms of his position is quite interesting.
00:11:43
blessings
in build-up, he like sort of drops into the left half space. Ole Miss in line with Milner but on the other side and from there he can pick the ball up quite confidently and turn and drive into into the defence and most defenders in the Premier League do not like that. So yeah he was an absolute menace.
00:12:05
officialgspn
100%. I think the thing I liked seeing about Jow Pedro's performance yesterday, and it seems like a clear

João Pedro's Versatile Attack

00:12:15
officialgspn
impetus that Herzler wants to kind of instill is he's allowing him just to kind of roam the pitch. We saw him pick up the ball kind of wherever he kind of wanted, where he thought was best to receive it and then dribble at opponents. I mean there was a chance in the second half early on, I think it was like the 54th minute where Milner had to
00:12:37
officialgspn
shot cleared off the line by Dallow but that all started from like you say him picking up the ball really deep and then just driving forward he kind of just pushed Martinez away using that frame that he has to kind of just shrug him off elegantly drew dribbled the ball up the pitch and then just played the most beautiful through ball into Milner where he kind of couldn't miss but it did pretty well to with the chance to be fair um did end up missing in the end but that was all stemmed from Jal Pedro's absolute just the way he glides with the ball that's the thing that sticks out with me every time I watch him I think he is so natural in the ball and what else do you expect from a Brazilian?
00:13:19
blessings
Yeah and I think it's interesting because I do remember parts of last season when he played as the like focal point nine sort of well back to position wellexed position they and he did struggle and I've said on this podcast as well I don't know if that suits him um That well-being the focal point being the nine he's gonna finish chances But it seems like hurts is getting the best out of him and he's found the position Where his skill sets can actually be on show and be really useful for the team um Yeah, the way he was just turning and driving it was very impressive and if you have a player like that in your team And then you've also got the quick wingers on the left on the on the flanks.
00:13:41
officialgspn
um Yeah.
00:14:02
blessings
You are gonna cause issues You're gonna cause damage
00:14:05
officialgspn
What I'm just saying, I think the like you say, I don't think up top is his strongest position or playing as that false nine. I think he works much better as like a 10 kind of just picking up so kind of what we saw yesterday.
00:14:20
officialgspn
That's where I want to see him in the future is kind of picking up spaces, playing in behind the striker and just kind of dictating play where he wherever he can.
00:14:21
blessings
Yeah.
00:14:29
officialgspn
ah There was a player that might have had a bit of a lesser game yesterday. And bless you've spoken. And to be fair, we all have spoken very highly of this man. It is Yankuba Minter.

Analyzing Substitutes and Squad Rotation

00:14:44
officialgspn
Was this a, hold up, wait a minute, some name rack performance. Sorry for all the listeners for doing that.
00:14:52
officialgspn
ah But yeah, what happened?
00:14:53
blessings
I enjoyed it.
00:14:56
officialgspn
What happened yesterday?
00:14:59
blessings
Oh, boy. um So I've really put my neck out for this player. And I think it would be harsh to sort of retract everything I've said over one performance.
00:15:13
blessings
So I'm not going to do that.
00:15:14
officialgspn
data.
00:15:15
blessings
If any listeners were expecting me to do that, I hope you're disappointed.
00:15:17
officialgspn
and
00:15:19
blessings
um But what I will say, I think
00:15:20
officialgspn
and
00:15:23
blessings
he did look very nervous. I'm not trying to defend him because that's not right. But he did look really nervous. I felt like he was just trying to do too much, trying to do the extra touch or the shot instead of the pass. And that just affected his game. I think he's the type of player who really does rely on sort of being confident and being himself. And throughout that game, I think perhaps the challenge of Manchester United It might have got to him a little bit, but um yeah, not an impressive performance, but the caveat is we we got to remember as a young man and he will grow. So, Yankuba Mentor, I'm sticking with you. Do not worry.
00:16:08
officialgspn
Yeah, I think it was a performance where the occasion potentially got a bit too big for him. Or, e yeah, like you say, it was this it was also his first home game that, I guess, matters. ah So that's probably another reason. And Hurst has still showed faith. I mean... There was a stat that came out in like the 60th minute on TNT Sports that showed that they were there were still putting the ball on the right hand side with Minta. I think 60% of the ball was still going on his side rather than Metoma's. So it still showed that the players obviously still believe in him and have confidence in him. Hertzler still wants to try and get him involved in the game even though it is one of his worst games that he's had in a Brighton t-shirt.
00:16:54
officialgspn
But I think yeah Pat, is this a potentially a moment where we put on the brakes slightly with our hype of Yankova Minter? Or are we just rolling with it next week and seeing it'll be back to normal next week?
00:17:10
blessings
um it but Yeah, a bit interesting. I generally wouldn't be surprised if he was back to normal next week. um But I think we may have to relax in terms of expectations a little bit.
00:17:22
officialgspn
Yeah.
00:17:23
blessings
Just because I think... ah and Although in other games we've seen all these how skilfully he is, how calm he is. Yesterday it was it was a massive wake-up call that he's still quite raw as well.
00:17:35
officialgspn
Yeah.
00:17:37
blessings
um You can tell he's so keen to impress. And if you looked at sort of sprinting and pressing, he'll be right up there.
00:17:40
officialgspn
Mm hmm.
00:17:45
blessings
um But yeah, it just didn't seem like a day for him. And it's interesting that you point out that the ball kept on going that side, even though you're struggling.
00:17:57
blessings
um Do you think perhaps Hertzer should have took him off just to save him a little bit?
00:18:03
officialgspn
i I think in the end it was the right decision to take him off. I would have liked to see him so get taken off slightly earlier than he did because he wasn't having a great game and I think that is also credit to Diego Dallow. I think Dallow has kind of solidified himself in this league as a pretty decent fullback like he's not someone that we can turn up and It's not like it's a negative being outplayed by Dallow or being locked up by Dallow anymore. Dallow has a good reputation and and proved yesterday that he is a good player and I think he was one of United's better players all of last season anyway. So to your original question, I would have liked to see him take get taken off for a Dhingra a bit earlier but
00:18:51
officialgspn
You can't fault Herzler for sticking with him. I guess he wants to kind of instill that confidence like long-term. We will be talking about those subs next and the the changes that Herzler did make that ultimately got us the win after this little ad break. Stick in.
00:19:13
officialgspn

every day. And we are back to talk about the Super Sub. Simmon the Super Sub is what we should call him maybe this season. If he carries on coming off the bench and delivering, that is one goal and one assist. Almost two, if the if a Yari wasn't offside in the first game, but we'll we'll take the one goal one assist in probably about what was he played like 40 minutes of football.
00:20:09
blessings
Yeah, if that.
00:20:10
officialgspn
God, tell us about this performance. How impressed were you with Simon Adingra when he came on?
00:20:15
blessings
um Yeah, I was really impressed. Again, we have to take our hats off to Hertzer for making the substitution in the first place, because um what a dinger did with one opportunity was what mentor fail to do with multiple opportunities.
00:20:31
blessings
So I've spoken on the podcast as well, said that Mentor might be ahead of a Dhingra, but I think yesterday was a good indication of just like how valuable those minutes were for a Dhingra last season.
00:20:47
blessings
um And also, I'm sure you've touched on the Afghan as well. That's an unreal experience for him.
00:20:53
officialgspn
here Yeah, he is looking like a special talent.
00:20:53
blessings
So having that experience banked in, he he really is coming along to look like a good player now.
00:21:02
officialgspn
Well, we've said this towards the end of last season as well. He is a special talent and i oh that's why we were shocked when we brought in Minter and all these other wingers ah in the off season because we know we have a special talent on our hands with a Dhingra.
00:21:17
officialgspn
ah Do you think it's actually time for, or potentially the next game? do Can you see him starting over Minter?
00:21:26
blessings
um Perhaps, because I don't see Matoma getting dropped. um And I think you've got to reward him ah for for his form at the moment, Dhingra.
00:21:31
officialgspn
no
00:21:37
blessings
Just you like a goal against Everton and assist to win the game, you've got to reward him with a start. And I think

Brighton's Promising Newcomers

00:21:45
blessings
you never know, that could benefit Mentor as well coming on a little bit later on.
00:21:51
blessings
Hopefully the game's wrapped up. I mean, it's also away.
00:21:54
officialgspn
Yeah.
00:21:54
blessings
but
00:21:55
officialgspn
Oh, don't worry.
00:21:55
blessings
um
00:21:56
officialgspn
It's going to be wrapped up. We're going to smoke and I'll tell you.
00:22:00
blessings
I love the confidence.
00:22:01
officialgspn
it
00:22:01
blessings
But yeah, I think that that experience might be a little bit better for Mentor as well, coming on with maybe less pressure or just a different circumstance of a game. But yeah, for me, I'll probably I'd have to start.
00:22:11
officialgspn
Yeah.
00:22:14
blessings
dgra
00:22:15
officialgspn
Yeah, I mean, I think it could also, in into in what you're saying, it could also suit Minter in terms of the fresh legs and the pace on a full back that's played or a left back that's played 70, 80 minutes, they will be tired. And that's potentially somewhere where Minter could capitalise. But the thing is, I think we mentioned it when we were watching the game together, it was ah just that one moment a dinger had where he looked up, played the ball to the back post to Joao Pedro, that was like completely different to what we saw from Minter in terms of the decision making. We spoke about on the yesterday pod how the disallowed goal from United came from Minter making the wrong decision in the box.
00:23:02
officialgspn
deciding to shoot instead of squaring it to Danny Welbeck on a 4 on 3. Whereas mint Adinga, when he came on, made the right decision, saw the acres that Jal Pedro and two others were in on the back post and made the decision to loft over there for for the winner.
00:23:21
officialgspn
There was one other player that we got to see and that is that we've got a little cameo, a little cameo and a little sign of things to come hopefully from Georgina Ruta and I mean, he was only on the pitch for about five minutes, but there was a dribble that he did where he took it round three players on the edge of the Man United box and played it out, which I think went to an Enciso shot, which ah went over or went out for a corner. But that was already special to see. What are you expecting to see from our record signing?
00:23:57
blessings
Yeah, i been that little cameo was quite impressive. And ah um I just think um he is a little bit similar to the way Jean Pedro plays. um And I think Hertzer likes that in and the striker. That being able to dribble um and in and around the box, getting past players, linking play up, I think is exactly what he's looking for. And and Root is really good at that. I can't remember. I think he got about 16 assists.
00:24:25
officialgspn
Mm-hmm
00:24:25
blessings
um last season something like that I may be wrong um but he got a lot yeah a lot of assists last season so hopefully we can see more of him coming on and um yeah and in the last podcast as well we spoke a bit about um the depth it's just so good now it's like Daniel Arbex on really good form, Reuter's coming, he's a really good player, um hopefully in the near future, whenever he's back, Kevin Ferguson will be back as well, so real options going forward.
00:24:57
officialgspn
Yeah, I mean, with the router as well, I think if Zhao Pedro does have like an off day, which he is sadly susceptible to, I think router showed that he can easily step in and be a difference maker and kind of fill those shoes that if if Pedro is having a bad game, he can get those assists, he can dictate the play, he can create the chances and potentially even score as well.
00:25:23
officialgspn
So that's the thing i I enjoyed most about CNN. And the other the other mention that you had is the other subs that we brought on and in CISO, who was unbelievable. I thought he played a came on the 75th minute or 70th minute. He had a very good game, had a couple of shots, won the corner that inevitably won us the game. So he you looked a threat as well.
00:25:47
officialgspn
and
00:25:47
blessings
what Where do you think is his best position? Because I struggle at the moment, I'm struggling to find the place for him in my head.
00:25:55
officialgspn
See, the thing is, I would have said originally before, ah I think his best position for me is a 10, where Zhao Pedro is playing at the moment, but I would rather Zhao Pedro over him to begin with, and now Ruta can also play in that position, that I'm kind of thinking, where does he fit in? And I think he's just gonna be a jack of all trades kind of play, he can play anywhere along the front three and do it to a high level.
00:26:23
officialgspn
a ah and good at dribbling, good taking people on, good at crossing. He's kind of an all rounder. So I think it's a good option to have just as someone to be a backup to one of our front three positions. What about you?
00:26:39

Yeah, I know. I'd agree with you. I think it hurts. It's got a bit of a dilemma here because I'd say NCSU is probably one of our better players. But the way the system's being set up in that Jean Pedro position, I can, I can't, of course you'll do a great job there, but I feel like the skill set is more suited to Ruta being the other player to rotate.

so and then you're like okay what other positions are there you're not you're not going to put him on the wing because we've stacked up on wingers so it's yeah it's an interesting one and i wonder how he deals with that because he is a very very good player and he will want to be playing um i don't see him playing deeper in the milner row row or the gilmore row no um so yeah
00:27:08
officialgspn
Yeah. Yeah.
00:27:12
officialgspn

00:27:28
officialgspn
ah One thing I've got to say is talking about the depth that we do have, the FA Cup and the Caramel Cup should be good competitions for us. We have got so many attacking players that when we go to a scumthorpe or somewhere like that and they see it in CSO, Ruta, Samiento

and Adingra come off or start against them because we're resting our starters. I think we should be able to batter them. And then even against the other teams in the Premier League or in and around us that potentially will be resting players. We've got much stronger depth than them that hopefully we can get some wins and go far in those trophies.
00:28:13

Well, it's crawling in the League Cup.
00:28:15

So, yeah, I think that'll be a good opportunity for like the likes of Reuter to start, um get some game time. um yeah and Yeah, again, we've got to be confident in these he these games as well.
00:28:28

He's got enough players to rotate, enough wingers.
