Introduction and Manchester United Hopes

00:00:09
Speaker
Hello and welcome to Daily Manchester United Podcast Episode 105. My name is Cormac Dooley and today I'm joined by Dan. Dan, how are we doing today? Yeah, I'm good, I'm good yourself.
00:00:20
Speaker
Yeah, not doing too bad. Hopefully we'll get a win tonight. That would just make it a great day overall.

Rude Van Nisteloy's Management Impact

00:00:26
Speaker
um But yeah, so getting into the fixture, United have Leicester in the FA Cup fourth round. Before we kind of dive into the match tactics and all that, we have a former United manager coming to face us again, Rude Van Nisteloy. Rude have four games in charge with us. He had three wins in a draw. How impressed were you with Rude and the job he's done overall in that short term?
00:00:49
Speaker
I was very happy for him when he um when he took over as interim manager and internalim management obviously what we really needed at the na in that very moment was someone to just stead your ship and you know just get us a few results because we weren't getting results under 10 hard so what he did that at United I'll always be happy for it because what three wins and a draw that' that that's what we kind of needed that at that very moment. Obviously he's gone to Leicester now and it's ah s not been as steady as it was at United for him.
00:01:14
Speaker
Yeah, I know, absolutely. I think you've done a phenomenal job. You know, I think it's a bit of a shame we had wrapped up Amory under a contract, because I thought, you know, if we hadn't Rude Van Nistroy, he was doing such a great job that I thought there was possibility, could have done something similar with Ola, put the contract on the table and see what he could do. But um it's funny enough, in those four games, Rude played against Leicester twice. That's two times we faced Leicester.
00:01:39
Speaker
um yes we We fairly battered them. I believe it was 5-2. We beat them in the cup. And then his last game, we bet them 3-0 in the Premier League. So he knows the team. It's pretty we don't have him now, to be honest, because I think it would be another win. um But yeah, moving on to you know match

Season Priorities: FA Cup and Europa League

00:01:56
Speaker
tonight. What are your expectations? you know Obviously, the season hasn't been really going too well under Amurine, but we have you know pulled out a few decent results in the last few games. So yeah, what what are your expectations?
00:02:08
Speaker
i think I think we should be winning, honestly. As a United fan, I think every United fan should be going into this game thinking that we should be winning. Or playing less, or you are struggling. and As much as we're struggling, and they're also quite struggling. And and and they're not as... They ain't got the players that we've caught. So I think going into this game, we should be winning. we Like you said, we played them...
00:02:24
Speaker
two of the last times will be quite literally better than the last two times we played them. So I think, again, we should just be going with that mentality to just try to get a result. I think in Cup competitions, FA Cup, Europa League, I think those are those are the competitions we should prioritize right now because I think the league right now, obviously, we're not, it's not like we're going to get Champions League football through the league. So I think we should be prioritizing these competitions and trying to win a trophy and just trying to make something good out of the seasons. Yeah, definitely. And that kind of, I was thinking about a question for Leiram, I guess that ties into it now, you know,
00:02:53
Speaker
At what point, teams mostly focus on the league and you hear, like, Cop would be without experiment. But you know, at what point do we kind of start putting the competitions like this first? Because, yeah, the league, I mean, top four European football is slipping away. So I think sooner rather than later, we start focusing on that stuff. I think obviously right now in the FA Cup we're still a bit early days. I think we're in the fourth round. So I think we can still ease into the competition. But sooner rather than later, I think we are going to have to start prioritizing these

Potential Strategies and Player Formations

00:03:20
Speaker
type of trophies.
00:03:20
Speaker
If FA Cup gives us Europa League football, as as it stands right now, as it looks right now, it doesn't look like we're going to get Europa League football through the league phases, well through um through the league. And then when it gets to, we'll talk about Europa League here. that that If we can get Champions League football somehow through winning the Europa League, that would be fantastic. so Yeah. Fingers crossed. I mean, FA Cup was their saving grass last year. So hopefully that or their opening can, you know, if we can win either of them, I would be so happy. yeah and But no yeah going back to the last match, though, I agree with you. I think it's a match we should be winning. And, you know, I was looking at Lester's recent games. It's been
00:03:55
Speaker
19 games since they kept the clean sheet before Amorim took over. So, you know, they've been leaking goals left, right and center. Unfortunately for us, we haven't really been scoring them. and So, you know, what what what would you like to see Amorim do? I know he's been playing the five back a lot. Would you like to see him experiment a bit? Try to change things up, you know, maybe.
00:04:16
Speaker
I'm not too fond of managers, you know, chopping and changing formations. I i don't mind them, like, bringing in players and stuff, but chopping and changing the formations for throughout the season, unless so yeah it's really needed, or, we you know, there's injury issues, or, you know, the fit's not right, and he has to switch this formation, though I understand the ball.
00:04:32
Speaker
But I think formation wise, I think he should probably just stay the same. And I just think maybe we could see you know some new fresh talent come in. I think maybe some young players come in. It is still early in the FA Cup. And I think no you United should be looking to win this game if we can get a decent win. And maybe we could put like a Chidiobi on 70th minute or some just on something fresh just to see something

Striker Challenges and Youth Opportunities

00:04:54
Speaker
new. Because I think I saw Chidiobi trained with the first team earlier this week. So maybe there is a possibility that he could play in this they could they could feature in this fixture.
00:05:01
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. I think she'd all be playing. I think we need him playing, because if you look, last game, Meanu's up front. It's kind of clear, Amory. so really Yeah, he doesn't trust the strike. i was that I was at the game, so it was just that I watched the game live and I'm thinking, even when the two strikers came on, I was just thinking, that this is just poor. There was a point in the game where Hoyland's taking a touch in the middle of the pitch and it's just poor. It's just everything. It's just not good enough, on unfortunately.
00:05:29
Speaker
Yeah, no, I agree, which I mean, the money we spend on them to the production really just hasn't been there at all. And yeah, I mean. I feel like this game is better than most for a chance to experiment and Cheeto will be married and has been banging in the goals, you know, competition. So, you know, yeah, why, why not give him a run out?

Impact of New Signings and Injuries

00:05:45
Speaker
Um, but yeah, no, I don't, I don't, I would love to see him play. I probably don't think he'll start maybe two minutes if he's named the squad. Um, but you know, I think, yeah, experimentation. I think Toby Collier, I think I'd like to see him get another run out. I thought he was fantastic against Rangers. Um, last match he started.
00:06:01
Speaker
And then, you know, obviously we brought in two new signings, Dorgu, Aid in Heaven. You know, ah do you expect them to be playing much? I feel like maybe Patrick Goldie might start. I think obviously he we've spent a bit of money on him. So I think, yeah, I was quite fond on him.
00:06:17
Speaker
I was telling the others before we did sign him, I was quite fond of him because I think he is what we need in that position. I think that's a position of need as well. That left back, again, we've seen new reports come out that the setbacks for Luke Shaw again, and it's just, it's the same thing with Luke Shaw, constantly injury after the injury after injury. So that is a position of need. ah I think there is that that is the game to, you know, if you want to do give him a run now, get him some minutes in.
00:06:38
Speaker
in the tank, I think that is the right game to put him in. And then Haven, I feel like he probably didn' didn't expect to come in and be you know that big of a a feature, so but you know with the ACL injury now to Lissandro, I feel like he is going to start having to get minutes because he is a left-sided centre back, and I did tell you that we would we did sign up to be a backup option for Lissandro Martino, so there there is a chance that they both could feature in that game on on um today.
00:07:00
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. Honestly, these two signs have come perfect time, and as you said, unfortunately, Lissandra doing his ACL the weekend. Martina has played left-back or left-center-back, so you have two players there that can cover either of them. um yeah I would love to see Dorgu start. I think a great thing about Dorgu I was reading during the week, he let's say we were trying to sell him during the summer, but he really wanted to come.
00:07:24
Speaker
here now, even though I knew the position in either way. It's been a disastrous season. um so you know Just mentality-wise, to get players in like that is brilliant. yeah and then yeah i mean We have Lenny Arrow, a young centre-back, he's been getting minutes. you know aid and heaven I think he only played one game first, I think in the EFL Cup this year. so I'm playing a lot of underage football and stuff, but I mean, yeah if we could get him run out even a few minutes, hopefully for the lesser up by a few goals, I think that would be absolutely superb. that So we'll go for a quick break and then when we return, we will continue our talk about the United-Lester fixture. Leicester Analysis and Tactical Considerations

00:08:42
Speaker
So obviously, yeah as I said earlier, Leicester haven't been really having a great season at all. They're 18th right now, 17 points, fighting relegation. So team on paper doesn't look great, but is there any you know what threats maybe we watch out for?
00:08:58
Speaker
from them you know they have Verdi up top. At the always going to have to watch out for Jamie Vardy no matter how old he is, no matter how young he is, he he is always going to be a threat and I think he has started to to pick up a bit of form recently as well so they've got him. I'm not sure if Fatahou's back from injury but he's a good, he's another tricky wingar.
00:09:17
Speaker
for for um for them as well, but I'm not sure if he's back from injury, but again, they do have some decent attacking players, like like you said, Jamie Vardy, Vatawi, but other than that, how brutal is it' it's quite a lacklustre sport that I think Man United, like I said, I think we should be winning that game quite easily.
00:09:35
Speaker
Yeah, I know, definitely. I mean, for me as well, I think Verdi, even though he's he's getting off there, he's still producing the goods for Leicester. He's had a scoring record against us for a while. famously We were the club he scored against where he broke that. I think he was an 11 or 12 game streak. yeah um So yeah, no, he's obviously one to watch out. And then another player I like from Leicester is um El Canoos. I think he bagged a goal um a week or two ago. But any time I watch him, he's been very tricky. um But yeah, I mean, besides that,
00:10:03
Speaker
Yeah, there's not too much. I mean, you look at the team on paper, you know, you even though we haven't been great, you think on paper, we should be in all areas, really. um And that that kind of goes into why i I'd honestly like to see him kind of experiment a bit, like in terms of formation. I know you said you don't like to see matters of chopping and changing. But I want to point out, you know,
00:10:24
Speaker
figure he needs something else in the tank because at points like this, you know, all the fight back, I don't think has been working that well. um So I feel like this is, you know, a good chance, as I said, Lester, I've been conceding goals. So i what I would like to see, um you know, maybe another midfielder or an an attacker get thrown out there, something new, but do I think it will happen? Probably not, because Amrain does seem to be sticking by his guns a lot. um But no, i I mean, yeah, I'd like to see it, but I don't think it would happen at all.
00:10:54
Speaker
Maybe. I thought maybe if it was. maybe move Ahmad further back, you know, as to a wing back position and then you could probably find a way to, you know, move, uh, mainly back from the number nine position and get, get a striker and then we could see a doldo on the left. Cause I thought that that's, that's the main problems right now. I think the wing backs in that are currently played in the system with, you know, Missouri and Dallor, I think they're a bit too defensive minded to the point where it is a five back point. I feel like it should be more of a three at the back and then, you know, five in the midfield type of, all I mean, four in midfield type of thing, but.
00:11:26
Speaker
I feel like, yeah, it with people with the right fit, I think whenever I've seen Ahmad play wingback, I think he's been classed. Obviously, Ahmad, wherever he plays, I think he's been classed. He has dropped off a bit here and there in performances. However, I think, me personally, from what I watch, I think he plays better at wingback than he does in the 10 because I feel like but the way he receives the ball, he's able to know run at defenders work rather than receiving the ball in the back foot.
00:11:47
Speaker
But so I'm not the manager. I think that's Amaranth's job to to to pick the team. So I think maybe if we saw Ahmed and Dogu as the wing backs, I feel like that would be a bit more ah bit more exciting than watching Dallor and Mazzarri play wing backs. Yeah, I mean, yeah I think the point of Mazzarri, I don't think there's a wing back. i mean that's the That's the main one, yeah.
00:12:09
Speaker
Yeah, for me, it's good. I think Mazzraoui has been our most consistent player, but he definitely is more of, you know, a non-onsense fullback almost. His defending is superb. um But yeah, no, going forward, especially in this system, you know, Amareem relies on wingback so much. And I just think when we have Mazzraoui right wingback, it just, you really get nothing off the right side.
00:12:28
Speaker
I think he could probably transition some more into a racket right side of the centre, because whenever he does play right side of the centre, I think he offers that you know the ability to come out the back, play out the back, drive with the ball, because he still has that technical ability.

Debate on Fullback and Wingback Roles

00:12:40
Speaker
and it was It's kind of surprising with him, because I remember when we first signed him, and that I didn't really know too much about him. Obviously, I knew him as earlier, I knew he played at Ajax with 10-0, but but the the notation around him was more of, oh yeah, he's more of an attacking right back, he's not that great defensively. and and Ever since he's been here, it's just like he looks more of a defensive right back than there' done an attacking right back.
00:12:59
Speaker
Yeah, no, no, it is funny. But I mean, for 80 million pounds, I think it was a great buy. But unfortunately, it wasn't Anne-Marie making the science back then. It was for a 10-hike system. And obviously, he's gone. but I mean, it ties in kind of, you know, Dallor last season, I believe he was United's player this season. Yeah. And, you know, to be fair, he hasn't had the best of seasons this year. Now with Dorgu coming in, do you think Dallor could kind of make that right wing back position his, or as you said, you'd like to see kind of like a mad play in that role over him?
00:13:30
Speaker
I have it all to be fair. i think I think that's another thing as well. Dallot having to play on the left side, he he doesn't look comfortable playing on the left side. I think he can play on the left side, but he doesn't always look as comfortable. I feel like maybe if he is to play as a right side, he'll fall back and win back. and might You might see the best of Dallot because I was quite high on him last season. I was saying, oh yeah, he's a very good right back. And I feel like we should keep him ah over, him um because there's a lot between him and Juan Bassaca. And I feel like, oh, I was always Dallot over Juan Bassaca. So I think, yeah, I think maybe when he plays on his actual natural side, maybe it'll be a bit better.
00:13:59
Speaker
Yeah, but no, I do. I do agree. I'm out on that right wing spot, right wing back spot. I think it's a bit more effective. I mean, seeing against Southampton, he just started to go off, you know, those last few minutes, caught in and causing defenders all problems. And yeah, I definitely think he's more effective there, but I feel like we're getting more fullbacks in, you know.
00:14:18
Speaker
it's And it's a shame because we only play with two attackers really, and it's more like attacking mid, I guess. And I feel like it doesn't really suit even Garnachos games more than a match. And yeah, I feel like right now it's just kind of like a ah system where we don't really have the players for, it and you know, maybe Amarene goes out and You know, it does some magic in the window. um But I think, yeah, right now I feel like he is still trying to find the best place to throw them and stuff. yeah But hopefully, you know, this weekend he he can get it right. And we need a good hammering this weekend. I think i think we need ah we need a battering. It's been a while. Even us as fans, we just need something to just be able to just ease our minds, call our minds and, you know, just get us into the next game. Just some some confidence going into the next game.
00:15:03
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. I think, yeah, we just needed, I can't match the watch, but a match we're not stressing about worrying, can we get over the line? Yeah, I think that is definitely what's needed. All right, so we'll go for another quick break and then we'll be back with more talk right after.
00:15:27

00:15:56
Speaker
So I suppose yeah we've been talking a lot about the players now. I feel like maybe we should put together what we think our strongest line-up or what the line-up should be for this weekend, or for tonight's match. So starting in goals, you think on Anna or by India? I know by India has been kind of more a cup goalie, but... I'll probably go by India because it's a cup game. he He played well against Arsenal and I think he's deserved you know that position to play in these cup games.
00:16:20
Speaker
Yeah, no, I agree with you. I think he, it's kind of hard to shine when you have about a 60 million pound goalkeeper in front of you. Um, so yeah, no, I think he's, he's done it. He's maybe have one game, one or two games. He has he looked at you, but that arsenal game last round was unbelievable from mario that. So yeah, I agree with you by in there.

Predicting the Strongest Line-Up

00:16:40
Speaker
Um, moving on then to the fallbacks right back, right wing back.
00:16:45
Speaker
Like I said earlier in the show, I think I would personally go with Amad, but I can say dialogue. I think dialogue could start at right wing back. Yeah, I agree with you. I think I'd like to see dialogue, given its lesser opposition, just get back in that right wing back role and see if we can get a more confident side of you, which is there. And then left wing back. And then obviously, the new boy Patrick Douda, I think he should be starting left wing back against left today.
00:17:08
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. 100% agree with you. I think this has been the most excited I've been in a few months now, a new player arriving and finally someone down that left wing back. So I agree with you. Yeah. And then moving on to three center halves.
00:17:20
Speaker
I think Maguire has to be one of them. I think we always look a bit more defensively be solid when Maguire's playing. So I think I'll probably go Maguire as the center center back. um And then maybe Mazzuria right center back, just just to offer a bit more attacking. And then between, you ah I don't really mind ma between Diora and Delict on the left side. I think, I feel like Diora looks more comfortable playing on the left side than Delict does, but it's up to you. I don't mind. I have other two. Yeah. I mean, yeah, I think Maguire,
00:17:49
Speaker
He's, I suppose with injuries now, he might get started a bit more, but hasn't really been like in the main three um as often as the others. So yeah, I'd like to see McGuire definitely start in that center bit. And then, yeah, I agree with you. I'd like to see it that right center back spot. um And then left center back. I think, yeah, I'd like to see Yarrow. I think the licks played a bit more than the mods. So I feel like she should give Yarrow another run out and rest a little bit. And then moving on to two defensive mids.
00:18:16
Speaker
I think, I think last, obviously I was there. I think the game he got here was poor. I wasn't too happy with how he played in that game. I think I'd rather just give the young Collier a start. It is again, it's an FA Cup. I think he has deserved the right to start in these type of games. I think I'll give Collier a start and then on the side of my probably go Bruno. Yeah, I 100% agree with you there. Yeah, Collier, I think he was fantastic against Rangel. I think these games are great from

Midfield and Attacking Strategies

00:18:46
Speaker
build up his confidence. And, you know, every year we kind of a young player coming through last year was Kobe Menus. So I'm hoping Collier can be our boy this season and and say, I'd say him. And then, yeah, Bruno, I play as well next summer. He's been playing a lot oh more, but Kieran's a big fan of him playing deeper. And it's grown on me the deeper role of Bruno. I feel like the system kind of takes away with him when he's open that too. Kind of has to cover more a wide space. That doesn't really suit his game. He's a playmaker.
00:19:14
Speaker
Yeah, I feel like, especially, you know, I'm thinking Leicester will be sitting in a bit deeper. Bruno can kind of dictate the game, get on the ball a lot, spray passes out, so yeah, I'd agree with you. And then moving on, the two, I guess attacking mids or wingers, I don't really know what they are. I don't really have much to geeze from. I think we've got two wingers at the club, so I'm going to have to go. I'm going to have to go. I'm going to have to go straight down red, as the two up front. Yeah, no, I think...
00:19:42
Speaker
I definitely think Ahmad definitely has to be up there. He's been our best best player all season, really. um So yeah, I put him out there and I'm thinking I did like Kavi Menu playing against Stoyabooka Rest in that kind of tense spot.
00:19:57
Speaker
I forgot about him. I was going to call the other guy next to him. You don't put him in as an attacker winging though, to be fair. But yeah, I think I'd like to see men who play there. I think yeah last week was a step too fair, maybe putting him up front, although in the first few minutes, he looked quite dangerous. Even the first, I think he was, in my personal opinion, I think he was the best player on the pitch for us, but I don't think we had a lot of good players on the pitch. But I think even in that position, he he made more, he made more of um But I feel like the strikers would adopt. Maybe Xerxes, because he does do that dropping in deep and you know.
00:20:34
Speaker
ah yeah to cut it out Yeah, maybe like more Xerxes, because you know he drops in and and he links play and stuff. However. um hoylan I don't think he would have done what mainly was able to do. I think mainly was able to get other people involved. I feel like that first 15 minutes, i think I think he was doing a pretty good job of getting everyone and involved. And he himself, he was horrible. He was strong. And like he actually made the centre backs work. I feel like every time I watch Hoyland, it's just, you know, he's just backing into defenders. He's he's rarely ever making them work, but yeah.
00:21:02
Speaker
Yeah, no, I mean, I thought manu, yeah, the first start of the game, I think he was kind of playing that false nine rows sitting in in front of the Palace backline. And I, I thought he was causing La Croix a lot of problems. He didn't know whether to you know step or go up. And he nearly had that goal, what, six minutes in hitting the post. So yeah, yeahvi ah he started off brilliantly, but I mean, even for all our strikeouts, it's tough when the service hasn't been great. And yeah especially manu going up against center backs who are a good few inches taller than him.
00:21:29
Speaker
It's always going to be tough, but I think the link up Sophie was doing was great. Yeah, it's kind of sad, I guess, for spending big money on strikes and we have to play a young centre mid off to have. But our credit to Meinu, he was pointing that position and

Striker Choices Debate

00:21:41
Speaker
done well. But yeah, I would like to see him in that kind of 10 role because we need to get Meinu going. You know, he was in the England squad for the Euros, had a brilliant season last season. I don't think it's really worked out for him so far this season, but Hopefully, you know, a good few stretch of games and then he'll be back to us always. And then finally we have the striker position. I don't even like the fact that I have to pick between the two of them, but if i have how I guess I'll go with Xerxes because I feel like he offers a bit more than Hoyland has been offering these last few weeks. Yeah, no, to be fair, I think Xerxes, he's handled...

the criticism well, because there was that point a few weeks ago where he got subbed off, um, you know, early and people were really, you know, calling him a donkey almost. yeah well I think his, I mean, against Harrison, the last round when he was superb, I thought when he came on, he was turning Salaba inside out.

I'm sort of the best defender in the world. So, um yeah, I think it's Linco plays, Urs is brilliant. um Only thing is his pace. I think I'd like to see it get better, but yeah, I think he edges Heilin out in terms of just overall striker right now. Heilin not sure what's going on. The only thing though makes me want to say Heilin though, and I think I might actually go with Heilin. It's just looking at Leicester's centre backs. They're quite slow.

you've best regard that I think he's what, six for five, six for six, quite slow and then vote fast as well. um But yeah, I mean, it would only really work for Heilin if you're getting good service in behind and we haven't really been given that to him. So yeah, yeah either art or really, I don't mind. I'll say Heilin, but really it doesn't matter.
