Mixed Feelings on Recent Wins

00:00:09
Speaker
hello everyone and welcome back to the daily manchester united podcast my name is nyle hannigan and i'm joined by daniel dada daniel how you getting on yeah i'm good i'm good to sell good stuff you're smiling which is a bit of a change from the last time we were speaking we got the the victory over lester at the weekend happy with the performance or what do you think But I'm happy we got the win, but I'm not happy we got four minutes. Yeah. Yeah. Seems to be the same old story. Even the games we win, it's just we don't even deserve them. So, yeah, it's it's given me flashbacks to the Southampton game a couple of months ago where, yeah, definitely didn't deserve to get the victory. But old Harry Maguire pops up with with an offside goal in the last minute to to bring us the the victory. So, um yeah, I suppose we can't complain too much.
00:00:56
Speaker
Yeah, literally. I saw a stat the other day of surprises. We won six out of our last eight games. It it generally doesn't feel like that. It generally feels like we've lost every single game because we just don't deserve to win any game that we do actually win. so It's so true. it's so true and then I was looking at some of them as well. or like they're in the Europa League and you're like, you don't even count some of them because you don't even know the teams you're playing against. Like, well, I, I'd hope they'd be getting three points in those games, but, uh, yeah, even the Rangers one, like you're thinking of that one, like that was absolute snatch and grab as well. So it's been, it's been, it's been poor, but anyway, anyway, the draw was just made there.

Reflections on FA Cup and Season Success

00:01:38
Speaker
Um, just this evening, we're filming this or recording this on a Monday night, we've got Fulham.
00:01:45
Speaker
in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Immediate thoughts on that? Obviously, we played them quite recently and we got the win, but also a bit of an awful deflector goal from Martinez. But yeah, what are you thinking going into that game? It could have been worse. It could have been Brian. Honestly, that's what I was thinking. It could have been Brian.
00:02:05
Speaker
and That was the one team I didn't want to see brighten on Crystal Palace because those CTs, for some reason, we just we just don't know how to beat them. so Luckily for us this season, we have found a way to beat Fulham twice. It's not as bad, but even that game, the last game we played against Fulham, like you said, the deflection from Sandra Martinez, it was a lucky deflection to the point that we did what we were able was to beat them. but If many of the players have any shame about them, they would actually go all out to try and win this trophy. so that That's just how I see it.
00:02:35
Speaker
Yeah, obviously last year was kind of similar circumstances. I mean, we, we thought last year was a bad season when we, when we finished kind of seventh or eighth or whatever. And we're like, Oh, look, at least they kind of got a few performances together to actually win the f FA Cup. But I mean, you mentioned, hopefully they can get their act together to actually give this competition a go. But if we did finish 13th and the FA Cup, what, what are you thinking for the season? like It's an awful season, we were singing was saying it was a bad season last year, finishing 7th or 8th with the FA Cup. So now it's just that you're going back another seven places and it's an awful season. Even if you win a trophy, it's still awful. There's no progression in the club, if anything, or going and backwards. it just it doesn't it It's not seen any progression in the club. I feel like for this season to be remotely decent, I'm not even going to say good, for it to be remotely decent, we have to win the f FA Cup and the Europa League for it to be remotely decent. Wow. Yeah, yeah.
00:03:33
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, we haven't had any issues winning Cup competitions, even in this barren spell. But ah yeah, as Ollie said, look, a lot of managers would hide behind their and their trophies. And it the league never lies,

Significance of Consistent League Performance

00:03:45
Speaker
I suppose. And and you want to be getting a ah run of performances in the in the Premier League. And that's what kind of shows true consistency and true kind of movement going forward of the club. and Looking back on it, he's dead, right? Because winning cups with Tin Hag and Van Gal and Marina, we still felt like the club wasn't moving forward that well. like So hopefully, anyway, we can we can get a bit of ah a run of performance and and get through that next round against Fulham. But I was looking at the draw as well, and City got Plymouth, the giant killers. I actually would have been more concerned if we got Plymouth.
00:04:20
Speaker
stuff i I'm kind of glad we got a Premier League opposition here so that that they're not off too much of a high face in Liverpool because they'd be looking at Gennady going, yeah. Yeah, we could definitely beat them. 100%. Yeah, yeah. 100%. So yeah, did you did you watch that Liverpool game at the weekend? I suppose that was ah i was a nice win. I was at my friend's game, so I didn't get to watch the game. So I was monitoring the schools here, and I saw they went running off, and I was thinking, ah, you know, Liverpool will come back, and they'll probably win the just getting to the 75th minute now, it's still 1-0.
00:04:52
Speaker
Now you're feeling it, I'm thinking, oh, they actually might do this here. And they won. I i was very happy. I was like, yep, that guy's Liverpool's treble. They're not winning their treble this season. So I was quite happy that they weren't able to win that game. It's true. Yeah. When you think of treble was on the cards, definitely. Like, I mean, they're flying both in the Champions League, topping the group since the start and then, yeah, are already kind of saving games in the Champions League. So ah it's very sad, you know, just seeing the draw and the Champions League, all the matches building up tomorrow and and Wednesday.

Champions League Absence and Team Criticism

00:05:20
Speaker
We are nowhere near it.
00:05:22
Speaker
like nor
00:05:26
Speaker
I mean, at least I get to watch football as a casual fan tomorrow and just enjoy the games, you know, and then see Real Madrid. I'm just going to try and enjoy it as a casual. but Exactly. Yeah, I'm just looking at the the quality of players and stuff. I'm just like, no, we're just we're just miles off it. um I mean, I saw Dalo actually came out with a ah quote there saying that this team is capable of winning, winning the league under Amoram. I mean,
00:05:50
Speaker
He followed that up very, very quickly by saying, but the hardest part is telling the fans that it's going to take time. And it's like, well, lad, I could have said that. you know I don't know why he's kind of coming out with these things when we're 14th in the league and can't string two wins together.
00:06:04
Speaker
That's the current situation at Manchester United right now. The mentality of the players is so poor. All they like to do is just talk instead of just put performances out there on the football pitch. I'm tired of it. I'm told I can see you on the football pitch. I don't have time to hear all these little the comments no more. Just put some performances out there on the football pitch, friend honestly.
00:06:26
Speaker
I know. I can't agree more. I mean, it's just like it's so tiresome at this stage. Like it's as if, oh you know, Lissandra Martin is. I just think back to that Liverpool post-mass press conference where he's like pointing to his head talking about there's been a mentality switch in the team. You're just like,
00:06:41
Speaker
there hasn't been it's clear as day that there hasn't been so like it's like play acting early trying to convince themselves that something has changed it's like one step forward and then another eighth step backwards it's just every that's how it feels like watching the man united players that one game you're like oh okay cool maybe we can kick home from this and then you watch the next week and it's just like There was a team that just played last week. You guys just, you know, went and got a result against Liverpool, you went and got a result against C, you went and got like, this is not the same team that I just watched play against. It's just, I don't know, I can't explain it. um must I must have to be a to be able to read minds or something to explain how the reason why they like this, but I don't get

Transfer Rumors and Ownership Concerns

00:07:19
Speaker
it. I know, mad stuff. And I've seen a few rumors as well about who they're kind of
00:07:25
Speaker
eyeing up in the summer transfer window. And there was things going around that they're looking for for players on a free as well. People that are running down their contracts, like floating out names like Dominic Calverloon and Leroy Sanne. And I was like, ah, here, like the club, the club, the game's gone. As I said, the club's gone. Like, what what what's the point? Like, because we're just going to settle for mediocrity. And what are the owners thinking? like I don't know. I thought new ownership. It was looking good. I think I was thinking, yeah, we've got people that care about the club, that they care about the football side of the club. And it just looks like we've got Glazers 2.0. They know that they're willing to spend any money. They're willing to invest anything and help and back the manager. We're in January and we've got a new manager not too long ago, a couple of months ago, and we're already hearing stuff about you know trying to back the new manager. We've given him free transfers. What's that about? That can't run. Yeah, it somehow doesn't surprise me with the way that they've been managing so far with hiring and firing people and you know kind of getting players off the books and stuff. But yeah, it's been ah it's been pretty painful. But anyway, we'll take a quick break here. We will be back with, we'll discuss a bit about the Leicester game at the weekend, um some of the the tactical side of it. And yeah, I'll be back for a bit more analysis after this. Every club.

Leicester Match Analysis

00:09:24
Speaker
So like we mentioned at the start, a late Harry McGuire winner offside got us the victory in the FA Cup. Um, just looking through some of the, some of the stats there, I suppose for, for the tactics Tuesday that it is today. Um, so 13 shots United have versus six shots from Lester four on target for United three on target for Lester 56% possession for United 44% for Lester.
00:09:50
Speaker
um We've added a bit few bit more passes, similar pass accuracy. um Yeah, I mean, we can look at all the stats we want, but the eye test doesn't lie with United and it's just it's just so difficult to get to get a decent performance out of them. It's just so strange. It's like it's the only team you watch and you're like, if they're just just lacking in quality.
00:10:13
Speaker
that's literally it. Even the the teams on the lower down on the table, you can still see that quality here. There's still quality players like the Southampton, you see quality Tyler Dibblins and these two, and three Romanes, the Leicesters, when they played against us, you can see the qualities in the Elkanouces. There's players that have quality, but when I watch it now, there's players that are meant to have quality, and it just doesn't look like they have, it's so poor every time. And it's just, I say the same thing every single time. If Amad has a bad game, man, you are having a bad game because it's just that.
00:10:44
Speaker
nothing Nothing gets created if Amman and Bruno don't turn up that day. It's just it's so bad. We're all so reliant on two people that it's just like, I don't get

Tactics and Player Roles

00:10:53
Speaker
it. I'll give him the benefit of that because I'm not too um um i'm always too fond on him. but god at When he did come on during the Leicester game, he did kind of flip the switch and he did help yeah which switch the game around. I think he definitely bought some intensity that was lacking.
00:11:04
Speaker
um on the team, like, you know, somebody that was willing to run out ran at defenders that we, I don't know, I just sometimes, I want to get behind the manager, but sometimes I'm looking at some of the decisions he's making. We signed the left wing back. I mean, you don't play him left wing back in this first game. And I think even at that, he was still very, you know, direct. He was getting the ball driving at defenders and I didn't like what he was offering. but And then you take him off for a half time when he was probably our most direct player. I don't know. I just I do question the decisions that he makes sometimes. But at the end of the day, he got the win and I'm not the manager. So I can only say what I can say as a fan. Well, we want your opinion. So that's what we want. But, yeah, a few interesting calls there. I mean, let's break it down. First of all, the the Garnaccio one, like he does bring a bit of a spark to the team. You can't really deny that.
00:11:54
Speaker
and still not sure, not convinced about his output and his consistency and you don't really know what's going to happen when he does get it but he seems to have found a bit of a new lease of life anyway after kind of being left out of the squad a few months ago um seems to be kind of taking it a bit more seriously anyway and running harder and being a very direct I suppose um against fallbacks but I still think he kind of hugs that touchline a bit much for the the system that that he's actually trying to play but um Yeah. And then Dargu, I mean, I get what he's doing with, you know, having the wing backs as as being inverted and maybe having that kind of a attack profile, but like on his first game, like play him in his position and also taking him off at halftime as madness. Like, I mean, he was super direct.
00:12:40
Speaker
As I was saying, i I just didn't get it. I thought, you know, we've been complaining that for weeks on Palm Weeks that our dialogue just doesn't look comfortable playing on the left side. And maybe we would actually get to see that player on his right and his normal side on the right side. And we'll play on the left and hopefully it will look a bit more ah a little bit better. But I don't know. I think he he is very, content very persistent in playing these full backs with a left sided full back.
00:13:07
Speaker
I mean, I left footed full back on the right side on the right footed full back on the other side. and ah Sometimes just, ah even if you don't want to switch your formation or like, you don't want to, sometimes you do need to give up some things in your um and you' and your tactics that's just, just work with the players around you and work with what they have around you. Some people can't, I feel like that lot can't do this in way you what you want out of him. Maybe just play him on his best side on you on the right side. he when he won play of the season for Man United, he was playing on the right side. So just try and work on and get accustomed to the people that you have around you. But I don't know, I think he's very persistent in his his style and his style must work. And I don't know, mate, that might later down the line, we might not, it might affect him. Definitely. You could see it backfire and um and it's I really wanted to work for him. and then there But there's only so far where
00:13:58
Speaker
You know, the there's the the reality is sitting right in front of you in terms of you need to get results at the moment. Um, you know, he he said at the, at the money, during the time that he took over that, you know, we either fix this now or we, we wait another year and we're in the same position again next year where we're just kind of fighting for actually getting results, but not implementing a system or anything. But it's been like 15 games or whatever. And the players still can't play like, especially the wing backs. Like, I mean,
00:14:26
Speaker
Maserati's not a wingback, he's a good good back three. Dallow is way more comfortable on the right-hand side. like You'd be a lot more confident with Dallow playing right wing back and Dargu left wing back. like That would be that'll be interesting to see. um and Another one I wanted to chat about was the movement of Bruno back into the two midfields. He's kind of been playing alongside Ducarte.
00:14:48
Speaker
over the last number of games now and and Menus kind of played into more of a 10 role. and I kind of was in favour of Bruno moving back. I think he naturally drifts back there anyway.
00:15:00
Speaker
um and I kind of like him playing a bit deeper so he actually can play those passes and he doesn't really suit the number 10s I don't think anyway but do you think it's working based off the games you've watched? Again, and like I said, if he doesn't have a good game it's not going to look great because that's the type of reload, that's the type of reload he's very high risk, high reward and if he doesn't, if it's if it's not looking nice, if it's not working, it's going to look awful and that's what pretty nice people, that's why a lot of fans don't like him because when it doesn't look good. When it's bad, it's really bad. But when it looks good, it looks amazing. So I am a fan of him playing in a deeper role because one, he works hard, he does like to work, he's going to run his socks off. And I think Kobe is better, probably a bit further up the pitch in those tighter spaces. And he does kind of suit that 10 position a bit more than Bruno does, because Bruno, he's not the most technical or most gifted at beaten players or driven in pathways. And I think that's kind of what you need in those positions. And I just think
00:15:58
Speaker
Yeah, I think it kind of works. And when it does work, it looks great. But I just feel like we need we do need to get the right people around around Bruno in that midfield as well. Yeah, um I agree. I mean, I don't think it is the answer. I'm still still and ah still not convinced. I haven't seen anything to change my mind on that. um The many ones interests and I really wanted to work for him. I just don't know where to play him. Like, I think he's effective in the number 10, but for us to get to where we want to get to our back up to the top. Again, I just don't think that's that's going to work um in terms of output. But then maybe it would work if we had better players around them. That's probably the main issue. as It's the yeah the level of ability. in our but i think
00:16:41
Speaker
I'm mad in the 10. It's nice. and In hindsight, I mean, on paper, it looks nice. However, I feel like he is just a better wing back because it's just the way he's able to receive the ball. I think he's able to receive the ball on the front foot and able to drive it because that's what I mentioned. And he pushes Man United further up the pitch. Whereas ah if he's playing in the 10, he's having to receive the ball on the back foot. He's got his back towards goal and it's a bit harder for him to turn and like beat players and all that stuff.
00:17:07
Speaker
If you play Amand and mainly on the same side, it's two talented players that know how to work on one and we've seen it work when they've done their little interplays and it's worked and they've scored goals with it. I think they work very well with each other. I think if you play them in that same type of channel together, you're going to see a very talented bunch of players. And I think on the left side, we just need to find a player that, you know, can offer us stuff in that car that shows a bit, you know, got more speed. And he was also good in working in these 10 sports and we just need a strike at the end of the day. These two...
00:17:37
Speaker
I say it every time I'm on here, these two, they they're not good enough found unfortunately. i I like what Xerxes bought in the in the game. I think he definitely, you know, he definitely did change the game a little bit as well with a guard natural. However, they're just not good enough unfortunately.

Striker Concerns and Defensive Strengths

00:17:52
Speaker
The thing is, when you're looking when you're looking around at the other teams in the centre far as they have, like,
00:17:59
Speaker
It's night and day, like and like you really want them to do well, but at the end of the day, it's not a charity. like You can't be just like, I hope ah hope it goes well for them today. it's like You swap one in, they do awful. The other one comes on, plays well for 30 minutes, and then it's just rotating. Every week, one of them starts, one of them comes on. That's what it is. They're both bench strikers. They're both strikers that you that you know they can get an impact off the bench. They're not starting Premier League strikers, neither of them are. fall out It has to be a a position, I know it's not major, and i people don't probably see it as major, but it has to be a position that we do look for in the summer. At the end of the day, to be a successful team in any sort of football, you need to have a number nine that's very good. that Every single team we see in the world, they have a good number nine.
00:18:49
Speaker
it's like a new castle he's he's given like yeah like all these teams that they have good number nines all the good the teams that other than livable because they they're they're replacing that that the ability or having a great number nine with obviously you have somebody like salar that's just going to do something and say in an arsenal as well like that you don't you have somebody like sakoy who's going to give you a lot of goals and assists regardless we don't even have that we don't have a player that's you know going to just give us a lot of goals and assists so we need a good number nine unfortunately Yeah, definitely one of the areas we need to look at. I mean, like you said, it probably wouldn't be the first one that jumps to mind for people, but like it's, it's so, it's so needed. It's unbelievable. When you look at the team, like you're looking, you're wondering where the goals are coming from. And and like you said, if Ahmed has a bad game, they're not coming from anywhere, which is like, if you said that at the start of the season, that
00:19:38
Speaker
you know, we're relying on Ahmad, you'd be like, what what is going on here? He wasn't even barely a starter at the start of the season. So, or even two months ago, he's barely a starter. Tenhag never played him much. But yeah anyway, right. We'll take another break here and back with another ad and then we will um finish out this Tactics Tuesday.

Every club. Every day. The Global Sports Podcast Network. So we mentioned the wing backs, the number 10s, the need for a center forward, Bruno dropping into the ah deeper of the two midfielders. The back three, is this potentially our strongest area at the moment, somewhere that we probably don't need to look at for the next while or what are you thinking?
00:20:52
Speaker
I feel like that's dope. There's room for improvement every now and for now. We're 14 for a reason. We're talking about the factory being good. Out of like you know the current positions, it probably is our biggest strength.
00:21:10
Speaker
Yeah, I'm clutching, I'm clutching here. like I guess it's our biggest strength. I think I like Euro. Euro has been very good since he's come in. I think that Lester, not Lester, I've happened to a game where Sulemano was was just on him all game. No, that needs an investigation. That game was ridiculous. I felt so bad for him. There was nothing he could do.
00:21:33
Speaker
It happens and I think he even said he did an interview with Rio Ferdinand where he said he needed a game, he needed a game like that because it kind of worked him up saying yeah like this is the big leagues, this is even the team like Southampton you are going to face a challenge like Suleiman or something like that so he said he needed that and he said he went back to watch the game many many times and and I think since then he hasn't put a foot wrong I think he's been very good in all his performances since then while again a lot of people hate on him but consistent performer for me every single time i watch him he's always consistent and again i'm not too fond of the next part he does look all right when he does play for us i think obviously with the injury to um
00:22:14
Speaker
the center now. <unk> what that That is probably going to have to be our strongest um back three going forward. Obviously, and don't we don't we haven't seen much of Lindelof. I don't know how he still plays for us, honestly.
00:22:26
Speaker
um
00:22:29
Speaker
He's still there. He's still there. He probably didn't expect to play this much football now. Now the Los Angeles injury is probably going to it's probably going to have to be, you know, someone that's going to be on the bench and that. So it's going to, we're going to see, if we're going to see, with a lot of games coming up, we're going to see you how how it shapes out. Yeah. um I mean, when I'm, when I'm kind of going through the team, when you're picking a team that's going to maybe start at the weekend, it it probably is the area that I'm most comfortable with. um I think the back three is is given McGuire a new lease of life. I spoke on there
00:23:04
Speaker
an episode late last week, kind of a preview of the Lesser game where I spoke about players that have played for both Lesser and United and for all the kind of hate that Maguire's got. like yeah As you said, he's been really consistent and he's bounced back really well as well because he has had some really like kind of dark days at United in terms of some performances. but for him still to kind of always come back, get back into the England squad, get back into featuring prominently for United. It's, ah it's a credit to him and that's kind of the attitude and the professionalism that you kind of need at the club because like you see stuff like Sancho commenting away on posts from Rashford and stuff like, and it's just, it's so hateful.
00:23:48
Speaker
but yeah he asked Nowadays, anything that guy does, he can't inferior me anymore. I saw it yesterday and I just laughed because it was just it's just funny because he's just a funny individual. he's just His lack of professionalism as a footballer, it's just funny to laugh at nowadays. But back in the days, if I saw that maybe a year ago, honestly, I would be living because he's a joke. He's actually a joke. This is somebody, an organization that gave you three months off football to go work on yourself, get your men's date back together.
00:24:18
