00:00:23
Speaker
Hey, audience, how's it going? As you know, today's not our normal release schedule. Today is a special day. In fact, it's a special month because you guys are getting some bonus episodes from us.
00:00:34
Speaker
If you guys didn't notice at the end of the last episode, we left at a bit of a weird spot. So what we're going do here for the next couple of weeks is give you guys a little bit of insight to what's been going on.

Return Home and Family Health Concerns

00:00:45
Speaker
So, may I present to you the first bonus episode of Talira and Calden, only and specifically, as they go to see her sick mother.
00:01:12
Speaker
After several weeks, whether it be by boat, by wagon, or even by foot, that it takes both you, Talira, you, Calden, as well as Lou, the bear, to get back home.
00:01:25
Speaker
You are so glad to do so, as it has been weighing heavily on your mind, the state in which your mother may be in. While the travel was grueling, you met some interesting people along the way, especially in Krayl, as you stopped by.
00:01:40
Speaker
you finally make it home to, I don't want to call it little because it's Goliaths, but you make it home to your encampment, to your tribe, the Stone Speakers, on the northern side of the Lunar Major Mountains.

Talira's Tribe and Mother's Condition

00:01:56
Speaker
As you pass through Dunfor, The small city, large town, just a couple days south of where you are from, Talira. You follow rough-looking mountain, hilly road up towards it. You have to break off at one point, as there is no official road that makes it to where you live.
00:02:15
Speaker
And eventually, on horseback, the three of you arrive in this encampment, this tribe, this home of the Stone Speakers, the Goliaths, in which Talira is from. In fact, as you make your way in, you start to see a lot of large Goliath people.
00:02:32
Speaker
MJ, this is your home for your character. Can you please do us the honor of describing what your home looks like? So as we crest the hill through the forest, we see a smallish clearing with a variety of like yurt style tents. They're there to be there for a while, but as the seasons change, they may move a little bit to follow the food.
00:03:04
Speaker
but everything is lit up. The tents are all off to one side. There's a giant stone circle about a hundred yards off in the distance.
00:03:17
Speaker
And you see the forest in the background. The woods are all around, but in this spot, there's clear space for seeing the sky, for observing the sunsets and the sunrise.
00:03:31
Speaker
A large area where there's a fire pit for gathering. And it's a larger Goliath clan. There are several hundred Goliath who live here. And yeah, it's just a nice, cozy, peaceful home.
00:03:47
Speaker
I love that description. Thank you. As you make your way in, some of the Goliaths... take no break, it takes no time whatsoever before you are recognized, Talira, as several of the Goliath come up and immediately don't even ask to handshake or anything. As soon as you're off your horse, you get sweeped up into a couple hugs of people who haven't seen you in quite some time.
00:04:11
Speaker
And before long, out of what seems to be the biggest tent off to the right, walks out a familiar face that both you and Kalden know. As Gwynedd walks out, she's a human, somewhat tall, with, if I remember correctly, brown hair, fairly straight, wearing just simple brown robes, looking not that she cares to present in any manner that seems like she would have money. She's a simple woman who leads a simple life and is here to help people, as she generally is, everywhere.
00:04:44
Speaker
As she comes out of this very large tent, she does not approach you like the other Goliath clan members here. Instead, she just grabs her hands in front of her and patiently waits.
00:04:55
Speaker
Talira, after hugging the ones around her, when she sees Gwynedd approaching, she pulls away and she looks like she wants to hug Gwynedd, but she's more concerned.
00:05:10
Speaker
Gwynedd, how is she? Talira, it's good to see you. She's... I don't believe I have the words. It's best you see her. She could be better. Okay.
00:05:21
Speaker
Prepare me? She grabs your hand and squeezes it with both of hers. I don't think I could prepare you more than the weeks of your travel have. Okay. And Talira looks to Calden and and then down to Lou.
00:05:38
Speaker
You can come if you want. Do you want that?
00:05:44
Speaker
I think I do, yeah. Then Kalden's going to go in with her. As you're walking towards the tent, Gwynedd addresses you. It's been a while, Kalden. It's good to see you.
00:05:54
Speaker
Yeah, good to see you too, Gwynedd. I hope you're well, despite the circumstances. As well as I can be. Who is the new friend?
00:06:05
Speaker
This is Lou. um She was cursed. She's actually a halfling. Oh, I see. I see. Okay. We can talk more later.
00:06:16
Speaker
And she stops in front of the tent. Before we go in, I should warn you, we have been quite busy since your mother fell ill and I was able to arrive. We've tried lots of ointments. We've tried lots of healing, both arcane and natural. We've tried everything, least in my power.
00:06:35
Speaker
I had to call on some friends and some very old ones. What you see in here, I doubt you have ever seen before. Don't let it startle you. He is a friend. Okay. Okay.
00:06:46
Speaker
And she pulls with one arm, turns and pulls a flap to the tent open with one arm to allow you all in.

Squalian's Diagnosis

00:06:54
Speaker
As you step through the flap, bending down because of course Quinnen's arm is not quite as tall as you are,
00:07:01
Speaker
As you have to bend down a little bit step in, you raise your head back up. And as you know, your mother being the leader of this Goliath clan known as Dawncaller, she has a very large tent. In fact, it's multi-roomed.
00:07:13
Speaker
And the first area is sort of, you call it a waiting area. You could call it a mud room. There several things you could call it, I'm sure.
00:07:25
Speaker
For her, she calls it her greeting room. And unfortunately, she's not there to greet you. But what is, as you step in, is an extremely tall, taller than you, its head just under the top of this tent.
00:07:37
Speaker
An emanglement of roots. and leaves that have woven themselves together in a manner that is oddly somehow humanoid while still containing about seven or eight legs.
00:07:51
Speaker
But they're not in a manner that a spider's would. In fact, they all just branch out like an umbrella from the bottom of this being, all connecting to just one torso as there's almost like a tree trunk up the middle, its arms looking like outstretched branches with multiple, multiple fingers.
00:08:07
Speaker
And its head is almost just like a bush. And where the eyes would be, there's just light glowing. Welcome. I assume you must meet Lyra.
00:08:21
Speaker
That is me, yes. It is a pleasure to meet you, although I wish it was under better circumstances. You may just call me Squalian.
00:08:34
Speaker
Or Squal for short. Okay. Okay. Gwynedd steps up. I've known him for quite some time. He is an extremely powerful forest nymph from the Great Forest of Nuna.
00:08:47
Speaker
He's been around longer than your clan has, and he knows a thing or two. Thank you for being here. i try to help those friends who helped me in the past.
00:09:00
Speaker
I can be here only so long, though, before the forest calls me back. I
00:09:10
Speaker
What have you been able to find out?
00:09:14
Speaker
The ailment that your mother has fallen ill to is one not seen in millennia. It is an old, primal disease.
00:09:27
Speaker
Some may say it's curse. Is it? A curse that someone enacts? And how do we break it?
00:09:39
Speaker
Disease and curse in my day of birth, once interchangeable. But now it seems it is not. New era language foul to me.
00:09:52
Speaker
Do I know if anybody have done this to your mother? i do not, but I do know that there is a cure.
00:10:02
Speaker
Then what do we need? We'll get to that. Go visit your mother first. Yes. Okay. Yeah. And Talira is obviously incredibly anxious right now. She's sort of bouncing on her toes just a little bit. She takes her hand and swipes her hair back as she nods.
00:10:31
Speaker
Okay. And looks back to Kalden. Let's go. Calda nods. She says as she takes, like, just gently pushes the tent flap to her mom's room open.
00:10:49
Speaker
The whole encampment as you go to do this is eerily quiet. As your people are very in tune with not just nature, but each other. It's almost as if everybody knows what's going on inside this tent.
00:11:02
Speaker
As the still silence, as the only sound through it is the flap rubbing against each other you look through as you see your mother the chest barely rising and falling you can't even hear the sound of her breath her eyes sunken in cheeks bony when normally full of life her eyes are closed and asleep looking eerily calm as if Death is holding her hand but isn't pulling her yet.
00:11:34
Speaker
Just having a nice conversation with the Reaper-to-be.
00:11:40
Speaker
Talira, at that point, freezes as she is processing all of that.
00:11:52
Speaker
Her mom is unbridled joy and... Laughter and strength and seeing her in this kind of place, Talira is not ready for that.
00:12:12
Speaker
And after after a minute of just observing, processing, She ah approaches her mom's bed and just sits down, like kneels down in front of it, grabs her mom's hands.
00:12:34
Speaker
Mom, you have to get better from this. Your mom's hands are cold to the touch. As you pick them up,
00:12:47
Speaker
You can immediately tell, as you would just based on the state that she's in. Talira's smart enough and caring enough to know that she would have to be so careful. And those fears, you find them to be true as you pick your mom's hand up and you can feel just how delicate they are right now.
00:13:07
Speaker
The bones brittle, close to snapping away into dust.
00:13:13
Speaker
Oh, gods. Oh, gods.
00:13:19
Speaker
How long did this happen? Like, how long did it take for her to get this bad? how long has she been this way? And Talira sets her hand down because she's too afraid of breaking it.
00:13:33
Speaker
Places her hands gently, like, at the bed, but not touching her mom. Just in this overwhelmed state of, what the fuck do I do?
00:13:49
Speaker
Gwynedd having stepped through the flap silently. She puts a hand on your shoulder. I'm told she fell ill for the first time about a month before I contacted you.
00:14:02
Speaker
They called me two weeks later, and I rushed here based on the symptoms they told me. Two weeks after that is when I called you as I saw the life of my friend's eyes begin to fade.
00:14:16
Speaker
I'm sorry, Gwynedd. Talira hugs Gwynedd and just begins crying, just absolutely letting all of the fear about what she was going to see out, grieving for what Gwynedd had to witness, grieving for what she's seeing now, panic.
00:14:45
Speaker
When she's holding Gwynedd, It's like she's hugging an aunt. Gwynedd family, and Talira also knows how hard it is for Gwynedd to see this, too.
00:15:02
Speaker
You don't see Gwynedd emotional very often, but you heard a crack in her voice. while there's no tears, that's enough to tell you how she's feeling in this moment.
00:15:16
Speaker
Come, Talira, ma'am. Let's go talk with Scoi'liad.
00:15:21
Speaker
Yeah, um... We have a mission for you. Yeah, and and a month ago, you said?
00:15:30
Speaker
Yes. I think I know what this might be related to.
00:15:37
Speaker
Come, Talia. If you're gonna inform me, inform him too. Okay, yeah.
00:15:45
Speaker
Kaldan actually stays behind. And once Lou and Gwynedd and Talira are on the other side of the flap, he places his hand on Dawn Collars and looks down at her and he says, um you and your people took me in and saved me when had nothing and no one.

Calden's Vow and Cure Ingredients

00:16:15
Speaker
I will return that favor. We will cure you, Dawn Color. And I will keep Talira safe. No matter what it takes, I swear this to you.
00:16:31
Speaker
Stay strong. Step back through the flap.
00:16:37
Speaker
All right, Squail. um She takes a big breath.
00:16:42
Speaker
Okay.
00:16:45
Speaker
Talera says she may have an idea of something that may be relevant, but we don't have time to waste. They need to know your plan.
00:16:57
Speaker
This curse is ancient, so it requires an ancient ointment, of which is hard to acquire the ingredients.
00:17:08
Speaker
I know you goliaths enjoy wrestling. Have you ever wrestled a dragon? No, but I will. good you may just have to What I need to create this ointment to apply to your mother is the feces of a dragon, the nectar of a blighted honeysuckle bramble, and the eggs of purple salmon.
00:17:38
Speaker
As much as dealing with a dragon sounds difficult, The hardest part will be the honeysuckle. There are very few left alive on this world.
00:17:53
Speaker
Do you have any ideas where we might have our best chances at finding them?
00:18:02
Speaker
The plant pre-blite. enjoys very moist and dense biomes and climate.
00:18:16
Speaker
A lot of times they would first form in places of maybe marshy material, but to be blighted, they blight with the nature surrounding them.
00:18:28
Speaker
Your best bet is to find a bog.
00:18:33
Speaker
We can do that.
00:18:37
Speaker
Gwynedd speaks up. Your best bet is the western half of Nitro Tare, north of Hedot. There's a large area of bog that is famous for rare arcane components.
00:18:55
Speaker
If there were to be any left, you might find one somewhere in those lands. And the good news is I've got a waystone not far from Fatharia that I can get you to.
00:19:06
Speaker
It'll save you weeks of travel. Thank you. far as the dragon, i have heard rumors for quite some time, and it may still be alive, as the dragons of Aeon, or the material plane at least, they keep themselves hidden and have for some time.
00:19:25
Speaker
But it's in Southern Troth, on the edge of the Sunpeak Mountains. They say there's one that still exists. Some people say that it saved the town that it might be nearby, some people say it's the one who destroyed it so many times, but...
00:19:39
Speaker
That's neither here or there. All I know is it may be a lead. I can get you close to there as well. Then we follow it. Indeed.
00:19:51
Speaker
I know you just got here, Talira. And I know that you'd like to spend time with your mother. And I am confident that she would like that too. But as much as family and love is good for the soul, your mother's soul is strong.
00:20:07
Speaker
It's her body that's the problem. And we need to act fast. We'll leave today, then. Good. I've already started preparing the waystone.
00:20:19
Speaker
Okay. Um... Gwyneth... I think this might be related to the Mistborn. She furrows her brow for a moment and thinks upon everything that you've shared with her about the journey that you all were just on.
00:20:37
Speaker
Why do you say so, Talira? The timing, I see what you mean, but why else? Whatever happened, we when we were there, ah Calden, we met a professor, what was his name? i
00:20:54
Speaker
He helped us close a rift, and he mentioned how this ah ritual might have caused the destabilizing of the foundations.
00:21:10
Speaker
I see.
00:21:13
Speaker
I'd like to speak with this professor. He may help me provide some more insight, but as of right now, I don't know how much help that information will will do us. Let's get your mother healthy again, and then let's talk more about this.
00:21:28
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Well, if you spend some more time with your mother, take whatever time you need, but it's important you all get on the road quick.
00:21:40
Speaker
In the meantime, while you are gone, there is a bit of sunlight to shine on the dark times here. The purple salmon happen to be native to this area of the mountain range.
00:21:52
Speaker
So while you're gone, i believe we can do the work of collecting the eggs. Thank you. Absolutely. All right, is there anything else that you all would like to take care of before we begin preparations?

Curses and Connections

00:22:06
Speaker
I... I know that you have your hands quite full right now, and I i hate hate to impose on you more, but Lou is cursed with a myriad of things, and we were unable to find out what they were or how to help her.
00:22:30
Speaker
And i wonder if if you find the time, if you might. Look into it for us. I'm sure I can take a look when I have a moment.
00:22:44
Speaker
Thank you. Thank you. i know you've you've done so much for us already, and this is another thing.
00:22:55
Speaker
if the curse outside of Gwyneth's grasp,
00:23:04
Speaker
I may take a look as well.
00:23:07
Speaker
Thank you. Lou, you say? You never mentioned them previously. We found her in Nevoa.
00:23:19
Speaker
She needed help. Gwyneth smiles. It's one of the things I love about you, Talira. She looks at Caldum and she says this next part. Always quick to help someone in need, whether they want it or not.
00:23:34
Speaker
He looks kind of uncomfortable at this.
00:23:41
Speaker
Well. All right. Well, I say let's be off. I've been preparing the waystone. i just have one final preparation to make, and we'll get you on the way. Great. Thank you.
00:23:53
Speaker
Yes, no problem. Oh, um, let me message Ramfist. I believe he said he would be preparing some food for you before you leave, so... Oh, thank you, yes. And um I guess I will go back and say bye it's to Mom.
00:24:09
Speaker
Definitely. Calden, come with me. Let's go gather the food and give you a give your friend here a moment alone. He nods. And Lou, you come too. It's nice to meet you, by the way, Lou.
00:24:20
Speaker
You hear as like they go out the out the main flap, you leaving you alone with only the Scoiliad in this greeting area as he seems to be at this... This wooden kind of, hard to call it a desk, but like a healing station of some sort as his branches seem to be crackling and moving just in the slightest amount of noise as he mixes a few ingredients and seems to be working.
00:24:45
Speaker
Thank you again for all your help. It's a great gift you are giving us. His bushy head turns around without the rest of the body turning as his branchy arms continue to work at the healing station.
00:24:59
Speaker
Gwynedd did me a great, great favor in her younger years. I have been waiting the opportunity to return the favor.
00:25:11
Speaker
I've heard great stories of your mother. I'm excited to meet her, and she is right. Thank you. And Talira goes back in and sits back down by her mom.
00:25:27
Speaker
As you sit by your mother, to end this episode, we're going to leave Talira there as she lives through the memories of seeing her mother in the most joyful moments, full of life, and the one that sticks out to you the most is the day you were granted your Goliath name.

Episode Conclusion

00:25:48
Speaker
the smile she had on her face as she, the leader of this clan, was the one to gift you the name Grimstone and see you achieve the trial at hand, having never been more prouder.
