Hello and welcome to the Daily Liverpool Podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm your host Jesse Sawa.

Liverpool vs Southampton Preview

00:00:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
The weekend sees the return of the Premier League after the final international break of the year with the Reds travelling to Premier League strugglers Southampton.

Liverpool-Southampton Transfers: A Connection?

00:00:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now to kick off the week's build up to that game we'll be taking a look at the links between the two clubs and the great players that have graced both teams. The Saints may be struggling in the Premier League this season but it wasn't too long ago that Southampton were a favoured hunting ground for Liverpool's recruitment team.
00:00:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
In fact, between 2014 and 2018, Liverpool first under Brendan Rodgers, then under Jurgen Klopp, signed no less than six players from the Saints, with Ricky Lambert, Nathaniel Kline, Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane making the switch to Anfield.

Player Highlights: Lambert & Clyne

00:01:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ricky Lambert was brought in after Luis Suarez left the club, a scouser that everyone wanted to succeed, but three goals in 36 appearances meant he made way for Christian Benteke, another striker that would not quite make the grade at Anfield.

Nathaniel Cline was actually a solid right back, a very decent player for the club he played for England. However, he didn't have luck on his side.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's Rise

00:01:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Firstly, he suffered a series of injuries that limited his playing time. It also led to the introduction of a certain Trent Alexander Arnold. The young Scouser took his chance and relegated Cline to a bit-part player.

Klopp's Philosophy and Lallana's Role

00:01:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
It also heralded a change in the way that fullbacks played the game, certainly at Liverpool, with Trent representing the future, Klein the past.
00:02:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jurgen Klopp, when asked by a reporter about Liverpool's system of play, famously stated that Roberto Firmino was the system. That was certainly the case once Klopp had sailed into the job, but there's another player that epitomised Jurgen Klopp's footballing philosophy and was arguably the system that Firmino would later become.

Lovren's Legacy and Van Dijk's Impact

00:02:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was Adam Lallana.
00:02:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who can forget that first game that Klopp took charge of? A 1-1 draw at Spurs. Adam Lallana almost falling into his manager's arms when substituted towards the end of the game. He'd given everything and run himself into the ground. Lallana was an important part in the development of the Klopp team and another player whose real potential was probably hampered by injuries.
00:03:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dejan Lovren was a defender that made his mark at Anfield. Was he the best or an elite level defender? Certainly not. He was famously hooked at half time after a horror show away to Tottenham. But this is also the man that scored the winner in a famous win over Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League. Scoring a winner in a famous European night at Anfield is hardly the stuff of losers.
00:03:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
He wasn't the best but by no means was he as bad as some may suggest.

Mane's Legacy at Liverpool

00:03:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
We just needed a defender that was going to take this team to the next level. That defender was Virgil van Dijk. After Liverpool identified the Dutchman as their number one target, they waited for their man even after their initial advances were rebuffed by an angry Southampton.
00:03:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Liverpool eventually got their man the following January paying a then world record fee for a defender of £75m. Many scoffed at the transfer fee but Van Dyck has proved to be worth every penny and more. Manchester United meanwhile blew £80m on Harry Maguire.
00:04:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
As transformational assigning as Van Dyke was, probably Liverpool's best signing from Southampton in the Premier League era has to be Sadio Mane. where Liverpool paid £75m for Virgil van Dijk, they paid just £30m for the Senegalese forward. Mane had already made waves at Southampton, scoring 21 goals in 67 appearances, including the fastest hat-trick in the Premier League era, scoring three goals in 176 seconds in a 6-1 win over Aston Villa in 2015.
00:05:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But despite that record, he's best known for forming one of the most feared striking trios in modern football. Mane would join robert Roberto Firmino and later Mohamed Salah in a forward line that would spearhead Liverpool's rise to the top. Winning the Champions League in 2019, the Premier League in 2020,

And he completed a club clean sweep by adding the Lee Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. It's his list of honours. In what was a golden period of Liverpool history, Sadio Mane contributed 120 goals in 269 appearances.
00:06:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was, it was genuinely heartbreaking to see Mane leave the club alongside Bobby Firmino. It really felt like the end of an era, but what a legacy that Mane leaves behind his goals, his pace, his work rate, his aggression and bravery. You'd never see Mane pull out of a, of a 60-40 challenge, let alone a 50-50, which made him a fan favorite and his legendary status is secured at the club.

Kevin Keegan: A Dual Club Legend

00:07:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now with all this talk about Liverpool players that played for Southampton, I have to give a mention to a Liverpool legend that also played for the Saints.
00:08:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kevin Keegan was Liverpool's superstar number seven during the club's golden period of the 1970s. He was a shankly signing and went on to win every prize in the game, with the European Cup final of 1977 a fitting stage to bow out at Anfield.
00:08:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
He won the European Footballer of the Year two years in succession at Liverpool and Hamburg, the German team he left for, before making a sensational return to English football in 1980 with Southampton. He was still only 28.
00:09:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
and it's quite it was quite the coup for the Saints to land a player um of such prestige and profile, an England captain no less. In two seasons he scored 42 goals in 80 appearances and picked up a PFA Player of the Year award.
00:09:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
He left Southampton in 1982, saying the club didn't show enough ambition. He left for Newcastle in the second division to start yet another glorious chapter in the remarkable career of this former red.
00:09:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
His time at Liverpool saw incredible success. He was signed by the legendary Bill Shankly from Scumfort for just £33,000 and went on to form a formidable partnership with Welsh striker John Toshack. He was the focal point of Shankly's all-conquering Liverpool team and helped Bob Paisley win his first European Cup in 1977.
00:10:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
In 323 games for the Reds, Keegan scored 100 goals and pitched in with 72 assists. He won the league title three times, the FA Cup once, two UEFA Cups and a European Cup.
00:10:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was also quite possibly the first of a new modern breed of player.

Dalglish Steps Up at Liverpool

00:10:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was supremely fit, his physique not out of place in today's game of elite athletes and was one of the first English players to become superstars off the field as well.
00:10:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Keegan left Liverpool after that first European Cup win. The fans were left devastated by the departure of their iconic number seven. After all, who could possibly come in and fill those boots? Liverpool signed a young striker from Celtic for £440,000. And let's just say this Kenny Dalglish fella. He didn't do too bad.
