33- Can Becca Interest You In…Money-Saving Hacks AND Nesting?

S1 E33 · Can We Interest You In...?

0 Playsin 9 hours

This week we welcome Becca Russo, Patti’s longtime family friend, to the show to talk about not one, but TWO of her interests—money-saving hacks and nesting (which go together quite well, honestly).

We start with a check-in and learn that Charlotte continues to set increasingly lofty running goals, based mainly on the snacks and the merch provided at those races. We hear about Becca’s wild schedule as a fitness instructor and how it suits her perfectly. And Patti shows us what real talk about how we're doing can look like.

We have a lively, delightful conversation in which we touch on a little bit of almost everything, including Becca’s artistic pursuits; exclamation points and women; manifesting and visualization (and how not to do it). We talk about some of our favorite topics, including mental health, creativity, reality tv.

Becca tells us about crowdsourcing her interests by asking family and friends what she’s obsessed with (love this strategy!). She shares her money-saving hacks, including her many side hustles and the lengths she would go for a discount. We talk about her motivations for saving a buck, which go way beyond finances. We get into the ethics of doing minor scams on big companies. And we talk about nesting, feng shui, and the joys of temporary wallpaper.

00:00:00
Speaker
You know that thing you love that your friends and family don't want to hear about anymore? Tell it to us, Patty and Charlotte. We want to learn all about your weird and wild obsessions or your perfectly normal hobbies that you've taken just a little too far.
00:00:15
Speaker
We want to dabble in your curious interests. Can we interest you in today's episode?
00:00:35
Speaker
Hi, Patty. Hey, Charlotte. And I want to introduce you to Becca Russo. Hi, Becca. Hello. Hi. Becca has been a longtime family friend. She used to work with my dad, so we all got to adopt her in that way. um And Becca is probably one of the most interesting, interested, excited people that I know of. So thought be very Yeah, I'm pretty exciting.
00:01:07
Speaker
You are. tried to say that in the most monotone voice that I could, but it didn't really go great. It was like a Daria-esque voice. I'm pretty excited. Yes! You're standing on my neck. I loved to that show. I did too. let's start out with how are we and yeah, how and Becca, we try to answer it honestly, but you you can be as honest or not honest as you want. So Charlotte, how are you?
00:01:35
Speaker
um I am pretty good.

Charlotte's Marathon Experience

00:01:39
Speaker
am training for a half marathon in April, but I have like a shin splint in my left leg, so that's... thing that I'm working on. Are you icing it? I was icing and then I have a trainer from the local rec center so she gave me some things to do and I think it's gonna be okay. How are your shoes?
00:02:00
Speaker
My shoes you know they I think they're okay but i I might get some new ones just to be safe. I think that it's time Yeah, that's right. Now is the time. Training. Yeah. I ah i have a nervous habit that I do where i don't even know if it's nervous. It's just a habit like where i lift my toes on my left foot a lot. Apparently, it's almost like a tick. And I think that that exacerbates it. So I'm trying also not to do that.
00:02:31
Speaker
Because I think that foot is bigger. It's like bigger than the other foot. So in shoes, it's always like, let me out. so Yeah. Did you know that most people's feet are not the same size?
00:02:44
Speaker
I did not know that most people's feet are size. that wild? And like some people's feet are like half sizes different, but you don't really know. And so you just kind of gravitate toward what feels most comfortable. But a lot of times one will feel like tighter than the other.
00:03:00
Speaker
Yeah, maybe I should get like half size bigger even. These are like a half size bigger than I normally wear, but I need to go up the full size. Yeah. And I wonder if certain, especially running shoes, if you go to a fleet feet or something like that, I wonder if they even do allow you to do two different sizes. I don't know. My mom recently had that situation where And as we get older, our feet get bigger too. And so she bought two pairs of shoes, one the size of her left and one the size of her right because she was like, I am not willing to not have it comfortable. That is commitment.
00:03:40
Speaker
And for running, especially a half marathon. is this your first half marathon, Charlotte? Yes. Yes, it is. And where is it? It is in Denver along the Platte River. And so I've done this is the one where i did the I did like a relay with three people to do it.
00:03:59
Speaker
And it's really nice because it's in the morning next to the river. At the end, you go to Breckenridge Brewery and you get drink beer. Yeah. Yes. You're a pletish.
00:04:10
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Oh, that sounds really great. Are you going to run it with anybody? Like I know you and Charlie, your brother did the hot chocolate. Yeah, they he and his wife have said that they might do the hot chocolate.
00:04:26
Speaker
Was it the hot chocolate? No, it was the turkey. I didn't even hear It was the turkey. ah Yeah, the turkey trek where we drank eggnog and ate pie while running. but While running? yeah. Oh my gosh.
00:04:43
Speaker
And there was like this big hill. So, oh my God. So this can't be harder than that. There's not a big hill. No, no. Eggnog especially. That feels very heavy to run with, like in your in your belly.
00:04:57
Speaker
You would think, but it was at the end of the the hill. So I was like, I was like, give it to me. I need replenishing. I'm half dead. so They did, though, Becca, have a spot designated for where you could throw up. like not a sign ah it was a sign of a turkey that was like, puke here, jokingly. No way! People might have.
00:05:25
Speaker
god That's incredible. Talk about assessing needs in advance and meeting people where they are. Prepare for it. Yes. And we'll make you feel fine for it. It's normalized. Yeah. yeah yeah Like, in fact, we paused it by offering you

Reflections on Turning 40

00:05:43
Speaker
eggnog.
00:05:46
Speaker
Wow. Well, good luck. Have you started your training yet? or I had, and that that was part of the reason I got the shin splints is because I started the training, and I think it was like a host of factors, but one of the factors was that I i think I just went too hard on a speed run, and and I did all the runs that week, and the week before I had not done all the runs, so I increased the amount of running too quickly. Yeah.
00:06:16
Speaker
But it's okay. A good last day. Yeah. Congrats. though That's really exciting to be training for such a big thing. What day in April is the half marathon?
00:06:28
Speaker
It is April. Oh my I can never remember. It's either 11th the 12th. The 11th 40th birthday. the eleventh is my fortieth birthday That would be such a great way to celebrate. What a gift. What a gift to me You would be running a half marathon. I feel honored, honestly. And yours is the 11th then? I'm the 11th. Yeah. Okay. It is on the 12th. So I will be inaugurating your 40th year for your you. Perfect. But you can inaugurate it yourself too. Okay. Yeah, that's incredible. Oh my gosh. Well, yeah, I really, i will just be thinking of you as I'm like 40 and one day on that day. and I will be thinking of you because the 40s are, i enjoy 40s, I will say.
00:07:17
Speaker
The 30s were good too. The 20s were the worst, I think. Yeah. Yeah. 20s are a lot. i I keep getting looks of surprise when I tell people that I'm turning 40. I think because I work in fitness and have like ah a bit of a like more youthful like attitude. Not even necessarily like looks or experience or whatever. yeah And I'm always like, ah should I be complimented? Or is that like, you know? They're like, no way! And I'm like, well, it's not that old. Like, geez.
00:07:52
Speaker
70 70 yeah yeah right like oh man but wait so you do fitness like what kind of what kind of stuff do you do i do i am a full-time fitness instructor so i teach 24 classes a week wait sorry i didn't patty you didn't get to say how you're doing yeah how are you doing how you're doing either yeah how are both of you doing Sorry, I'm like going, I'm like running things and being like, we need to do this first. There probably isn't like, there probably isn't a schedule. i Sorry, I felt like I was like hijacking people pleaser over here. I was like, oh no, I'm hijacking the conversation. We haven't gone through like the orders of business, but it's totally fine. agree. I'm always like, like, oh no, wait a minute. So if yeah that's your interest, let's let's back it up. Let's back it up. Okay, I have a few interests. How's your...
00:08:46
Speaker
Okay. So how's your day? Well, how is, how are you? Yeah. Just how are you Becca?

Becca's Fitness Career

00:08:51
Speaker
Okay. First of all, all right and this actually ties back into fitness. So I think we're going to be okay. I think, think we're going to be on track. fine Yeah. We're going to be like hitting our marks and we're to be moving forward. So that's perfect. um Number one, ah the day is actually going really, really great. I love Thursdays. I am a full-time fitness instructor. And so every day is different. And i teach at four different locations of a fitness club in Chicago that has 10 locations total.
00:09:20
Speaker
So some days I'll be at one location. Some days I'll be at three. In a single day, some some days I'm teaching three classes, other days I'm teaching six. So like every day is very different. If you had talked to me yesterday, i would have been sleepy and slightly stressed out and very scattered because I'm in three different places teaching six classes. Today,
00:09:48
Speaker
I'm teaching four classes, two in the morning, two in the evening, and they're at the closest club to my home. And so I feel like Thursdays are awesome. Easy commute.
00:10:02
Speaker
Very easy, low maintenance classes. It feels almost like a day off. So I'm feeling chill. I'm feeling groovy. so Which explains why, a you wanted to record on a day like today and not a yesterday. And do you feel that sometimes like Thursday feels even better because Wednesday is so and insane? Yes. Yes.
00:10:25
Speaker
So it's like nice to have them back to back. Yeah, I think that is something weird about me is that I thrive in chaos, but like i appreciate when the chaos is over. And so I think that's why like a fitness job is good for me because in and having like such a packed schedule.
00:10:45
Speaker
Yeah, in the midst of it, I like dread days like that, like Wednesday. But then in the midst of it, I do feel energized. Yeah. And then, but then having today after that, like allows me to like relax and like regroup. I just got an aura ring for Christmas. Have you heard of the aura ring? Yeah. Heard of it. Yeah.
00:11:06
Speaker
Yeah. And it's it tells you your readiness score. it tells you how well you're sleeping when you're in the REM cycle, when you're in deep, when you're in light. so you have a sleep score, you have a stress score, you have all these things. And so i'm interested to look at the data and be like, what is my readiness score on a Thursday as opposed to a Wednesday when I'm teaching a lot versus like, there are so many factors involved, like the sleep and yeah, all of that stuff.
00:11:33
Speaker
Yeah, I do think it's a good career for me in that way because there is so much variance between the days and it keeps me from getting like too bored with what I'm doing, is helpful. My sister says that. like She works at in a school system. She's a yeah bilingual therapist and so she goes to a bunch of different grammar schools and And so as much as she'll say, like, it's insane that I don't have any space that's my my own. I'm constantly in my car.
00:12:03
Speaker
there are so many things that are stressful about it. And she loves it because she's like, it's different every day. And the things, you know, the things that I don't like that much, I don't have to do for that long. Like there's yeah so much variety.
00:12:17
Speaker
Yeah, that is that is interesting to be able to realize what works so well about a career that you're in for totally yourself. Patty, do you work from home or do you commute? i I work from home right now because I live in St. Louis. So I moved here two years ago. So yes, I work from home all the time.
00:12:38
Speaker
Yeah. yeah Do you like that? No, I don't. i yeah It's really hard. It's really hard. So yeah. Yeah.
00:12:49
Speaker
it's it's Some of it is okay because i live in a two flat with my sister's family. like They live upstairs and then her stepson lives with me. And so it's like I see people at least and I have interaction on a regular basis. But I do find it really hard some days especially to just let me just focus. And so when I go into the office for like a week at a time, when I'm back in Chicago, i just I love. You thrive. Yeah.
00:13:18
Speaker
Yeah. Definitely. um Yeah, how are you? In terms of me for how I am today. Yeah, how

Emotional Volatility and Women's Emotions

00:13:23
Speaker
are you? I have to share it. So I had i started ah seeing a new a new therapist. I started therapy again. And so I started seeing a new therapist and this was our third session. I really love her. But man, I was...
00:13:34
Speaker
super cryy the last two days I did get my period so I'm like okay that's probably a part of it which I always hated acknowledging that that is a real thing but I so I like started the morning sobbing and I feel like it's just like the tears are just constantly right below the surface like I was in a meeting and somebody at work just now and somebody was yeah and how are you and I was like dont know that like Like, I was like, uh-huh, everything's good. I got to go.
00:14:07
Speaker
Don't you hate that when the tears are like, they're bubbling your eye sockets and you're like, no, no, no. no no no no no no Yes. And then the voice gets quavery. So yeah. So I'm acknowledging that I'm a little bit, I'm a little bit fragile right now. I'm also a little bit manic. So it's kind of nice to have at least that energy to like be kicking me up and getting me to get things done. That fragile mania. I like it. like it. I've never felt more seen in my life. I i could, Patty, I could not relate more to the fragile mania. Like yeah we're not alone in that sister. Thank you.
00:14:50
Speaker
Thank you for saying that. ah Oh my gosh. Like I, I came prepared with like a few interests, but like, honestly, you even talking about that, I'm like,
00:15:02
Speaker
man, I'm like, feelings are interesting and I could talk about them forever. They are... and like, as you were talking about feelings around like our cycles and stuff like that, women women are so complicated and We're so tied to nature and to like, that hormonally, there's so much going on with us. And it is like such a blessing and such a curse all in one. In fact, I even many, many years ago, i was working on, I'm still kind of like marinating on it. I was working on a show, one woman show called My Life as an Exclamation Point because of the range of feelings and emotions that I encounter in a day, in an hour, in a minute, and how I think more people would relate to that than not. And it's something like we should talk about more. and I kind of like shelved it for now, but um it's just so, it's so relatable.
00:16:07
Speaker
I really feel that. An exclamation point can be, represent so many things. And then I also feel like women are often made fun of in business settings for the use of exclamation points or told that they should use them more to like express themselves. Charlotte is a writer and has done theater and is in the process of writing. She has written and is now submitting her novel.
00:16:34
Speaker
What? Yeah, I'm trying to get an agent. And I do have like at least one line about exclamation points in women in this novel because no it's like, I forget what I said about it in it, but it's something about like a woman's best friend. like is that exclamation point But also it's their worst enemy because of what Patty just said of the bind that you get into.
00:16:58
Speaker
It is so true. It is so true. And of course, I always had the issue of go through and cut three fourths of the exclamation points from your email. So you're taken seriously.
00:17:10
Speaker
so yeah, but then I'm like, but do I seem harsh? So should i add one back? No. Yes. Yes. And that's in text too. Like if my best friend were to send me a text saying like, okay, with a period, i'd be like, we're fighting.
00:17:26
Speaker
What's wrong? like We are in a fight. Like, why do you hate me? no Why is she so upset? Yeah, is the K. And if there were a period after. Yeah, I mean, it is it is so funny how punctuation has almost like gone away, but then is also so important in certain ways, like the way that it is used. Like it might not be used accurately, but when it's used, it's telling a story.
00:17:50
Speaker
Totally. Charlotte, what's your novel about?

Challenges in Writing and Creative Expression

00:17:53
Speaker
it is a comedic novel about blended family that their patriarch dies and they convene. It's three characters. They convene in Boulder. I know this, like I'm trying to basically quote the query letter and,
00:18:10
Speaker
Basically, the the dad has accumulated ah like a bunch of wellness prod products and has basically bankrupted them. So they need to make money quickly in order to bury him, but also to make sure they don't get kicked out of the house. And so they go through a number of different types of things that they do, but... They start like a bootleg wellness company. They go to a goop-esque retreat.
00:18:38
Speaker
um It's like a wellness satire, essentially. That is awesome. I cannot wait to read it. i cannot wait to see if you will get the chance to read it Well, we will one way or the other, but yeah. Yes, that's true. But whether it's because I sent you the PDF or it's because it's in a book. it remains It's going to be on a shelf at the Hudson News in an airport.
00:19:07
Speaker
Yes. I feel it. hope I manifest it. I will tell you, so like when when I get like a, sometimes, so you send out a letter to to agents and then they will like ask you if you want to send your manuscript and then then you send it. So when I've been sending it, the manuscript, Adam, my boyfriend and I, like he will do this thing where we visualize it going to the agent and we visualize them reading it and loving it. I'm very bad at doing that because I give way too much detail and I'm like, and then they get it and then they get their coffee and then maybe like a week later they read it and he's like, no, that's not how you do this. So he'll like narrate the the visualization and then we send it off.
00:19:55
Speaker
You're like, they go home, still haven't read it. They make dinner, still haven't read it. nows said charlotte Now, no. Yeah, he said something about like, and then we see it in the bookstore. And I was like, except that's too soon. It wouldn't come out for another year or two. And he's like, no, stop it.
00:20:16
Speaker
You're ruining it.
00:20:19
Speaker
That is so great. I'm glad you have a guide who really knows how to visualize and you can keep you on track. It's like I'm a therapist. I'm supposed to know how to do that correctly, but not not for myself.
00:20:34
Speaker
It's different when it's you yeah so Yeah. Okay, so what kind of stuff do you write? and and And let me know if this is going off topic too much. But like the one woman show, like, and but what? What?
00:20:47
Speaker
So, okay, so I would consider myself more of an actor than a writer, but in I've done a lot of sketch comedy and improv. Some of that is involves like creating and coming up with characters and like writing. um But the one-woman show was really difficult for me with the writing aspect, just because...
00:21:12
Speaker
I'm more of like a verbal processor. And so i would get a lot of writer's block. And then the reason i didn't even end up doing anything with it, well, I just so many things that I'm like, I get really passionate about and really excited about. And then i lack focus or I will get something excited about something else, which I guess is lacking focus. And then I will just shift and leave it unfinished. So there are like several things that I really want to learn to do. Like I want to learn how to DJ, for instance, and I bought a DJ table
00:21:52
Speaker
And I've used it like once and it's really hard. it's It's way harder than they make it look. And it has just been sitting in a cabinet collecting dust since I purchased it like a year and a half ago. So I would say it was mostly comedic writing, but I had, I mean, I had some, a few like pretty poignant things.
00:22:14
Speaker
pretty vulnerable pieces that i i wrote. But I think, yeah, I think it was tough And I don't know if you write nonfiction ever, but or write memoir-esque stuff, but just, I don't know, just getting in your head about, is this narcissistic? is Is this just like a me thing? Will anyone relate to this? Also, my life as an exclamation point, I was starting to feel like, am I just writing about having mania? And having like...
00:22:44
Speaker
Like, just like, wait down up down op dumb which is, which is fine. But like, yeah, I was like, I don't know. I just, this is a lot about me and a lot about, I don't know. i don't even know how to explain it. But like, it got to a point where I was like, i just need to take a moment away from this. And then it's I just haven't done anything ever since. But like it was it was a really cool thing to work on and to write about and to talk about with friends and family. and I did feel like I learned a lot about myself. So even if it was just like an exercise in self-discovery, i feel like that's cool. And then maybe someday, you know, the author of Hamilton...
00:23:23
Speaker
It took him 20 years to get that on the stage. So, you know, life is long, hopefully. Maybe I will return to it someday. And Charlotte, I know that you have a writing group and things like that. There are also, it feels like this is exactly why people so often have a creative collaborator, somebody that they work with to create things because... Again, not everybody wants to just sit down and write, whereas you can be like an idea person or like write like you know bouncing ideas off each other that then become something bigger and better. And creativity in as a solo work feels really daunting. And I can see where also it's like, either is this not at all relatable and it's just me and am I spending too much time like self-reflecting or is it like, of course, everybody gets this and do I need to be another voice in the the room of what does it matter? but In the echo chamber. Yeah. Yeah, there you go. But also, like does it have to matter in order to create art?
00:24:24
Speaker
Probably not. But yeah, Charlotte, you think? i do I think that ah that's a good point about collaborators and classes and things like that because then you get some feedback about like, is this resonating with anybody? Because I do think that memoir type work is so much it's harder in some ways because it's kind of like you have to write it as if nobody's ever going to read it so that you write everything down without thinking about like what other people are thinking and then like wait and go back and be like, okay
00:24:56
Speaker
What of this was me processing and how can I make it more of like less like processing more of what i want it to be. And then like, yeah, yeah. ah But, ah and also like, yeah, like, like you were saying, you know what?
00:25:13
Speaker
Cause I think that in the beginning it's like, okay, there is going to be a lot of me brain dumping because that's how you get the ideas out there. And then what are the ideas that I feel like are sticking? And yeah. So, I mean, there's a reason that I am doing fiction and not, yeah.
00:25:29
Speaker
ah now yeah for now oh That's just me saying, you know, making suggestions. but Yeah, no, I'd have to have some more interesting life experiences, I think, to write compelling memoirs.
00:25:46
Speaker
ah Well, if anything, you could just take your therapy transcripts and just turn them into stories. That wouldn't be against any sort of like HIPAA violation or anything.
00:25:57
Speaker
Totally not. Also, the thing about that is that sometimes people tell you things that like, you're like, okay, this would make a great story. But like, if you actually wrote it into a story, sometimes people are like, that's not believable. And I'm not just saying this about therapy. I'm saying this in general, because I've heard that from You hear that a lot where it's like, okay, this isn't really believable. you're like, but it literally happened. And like, but that's not, that doesn't mean it's believable within this context. Like I, I watch a ton of bad reality television and yeah. And I used to watch 90 day fiance. The only reason that I don't anymore is that I don't have that channel, like that streaming channel. but I listen to all of the recaps still and the situations and these characters and what comes out of their mouths regularly. One of the podcasts that I listened to that recaps it is Nicole Byer and Marcy Jaro, and they're both comedians and writers. And they'll say, if I were to write this in a script, they would say, whoa, whoa, whoa, nobody would ever do that. Not believable change it, you know, whatever. And it's like, but it is, I mean, truth is stranger than fiction. People are insane in that way. And especially go on 90 Day Fiance. Sorry, go ahead.
00:27:17
Speaker
Oh, no, you go. That's it. Just especially to go on on a show like that, you've got a certain type of person ah agrees to go on reality television.
00:27:28
Speaker
Yes. That is a good point. um I was going to say that ah writing a comedic novel about wellness is like Like you cannot satirize wellness. It's just you can't go more ridiculous and over the top than it currently is. yeah So you kind of have to go like a different route. So that's what I'm right trying to do. But like you there's just no way. It's it's bonkers.
00:27:57
Speaker
the things that people do for wellness. Like Gwyneth Paltrow's vagina. Like, oh, okay. How do I one up that? You don't. i know. yeah And it's funny. It's like, ah that's quaint now, you know, like it's like, oh wonderful. Do you have that scent? or Yeah.
00:28:13
Speaker
Did you ever see when, from Real Housewives of Orange County, Terry and Heather Dubrow put leeches on their bodies help them with like weight loss or circulation or something like that?
00:28:27
Speaker
Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Oh, yeah. The things that they'll do are... And, Charlotte, to get you just in to know who Heather Dubrow is, although she's Television star.
00:28:38
Speaker
Film and television star. Yeah. Her IMDb page is impressive. No, but her husband is a big time plastic surgeon. So the two of them, and she looks pretty natural, like in the skeletor kind of way, but both of them have had a lot of work

Absurdity in Reality TV and Wellness Industry

00:28:57
Speaker
done. So they're very into, like Oh, but let's also make it look we're doing wellness stuff in addition to the plastic surgery. it's like, I look like this because of the leeches, not because of the surgery. All right.
00:29:13
Speaker
Yes, exactly. They're a wild couple, man. It's, I think her first, like the intros that the housewives do, the one-liner about them, her first one was like, my husband is a plastic surgeon, but I'm 99% real. like was like no you're not bitch that is a lie come on just be real ah water she she got it wrong and she thought that we were made up of 99 water in our bodies yeah
00:29:48
Speaker
ah oh heather oh honey no ah That was another one when I was thinking about like, what are things that interest me? i actually texted my parents. I'll read you what they sent me. but I said, what are things that I'm obsessed with? Mom said, improv, cats, dogs, sushi, friendship.
00:30:10
Speaker
naps your parents and then she said of course Francis Rocco who is my nephew but I was like oh my god reality tv that's another one because I could talk about that truly all day but the the hard part about that is like not everyone watches the same franchises that you watch you know right and so but they don't have to you can talk about yeah like what you love about it and then yeah true that's a very good point Well, I also asked my best friend and she came up with two that I really like. So I don't know if you guys ever do two or if you if you try to hone in on one. but
00:30:45
Speaker
i think we should do two. I think we should yay do like something different. Yeah. oh I love that. I love that. Number one she said you love finding ways to be frugal at ways to find deals. Yes. And like save money and hacks that you can do and hacks like even living in Chicago and owning a car.
00:31:09
Speaker
and teaching in very downtown, fancy neighborhoods where it's $30 to park for an hour. i just have like little hacks, you know, everywhere I go um to save money. And then she said the other thing, which um she was just like running stream of consciousness. And of course, naps were thrown in there, cats, dogs as well. But she said the other thing that I was like, oh, that's kind of interesting.

Creating a Homey Space and Feng Shui

00:31:33
Speaker
She was saying, you have ah the ability, like you're very good at nesting. and making your space your own. Oh, that is a skill that I do not have. Oh, thank you so much. i didn't even really realize that I had it until i moved into a place and realized within like 36 hours, I have everything up on the walls. I had ordered temporary wallpaper, everything unpacked, boxes broken down. i am a ah quick, efficient person.
00:32:08
Speaker
nest her because I want wherever I am to feel like home and like comfortable and intentional, like as soon as possible. And so she was like, maybe something about like making your space your own. And like, I've gotten really into um temporary wallpaper because I'm a renter.
00:32:26
Speaker
So it's kind of like um contact paper and then you can just peel it off whenever you're done. so anyway, Yeah. Yeah. we cannot Can I say that weirdly, these two coincide for me because I recently was like learning a little bit about feng shui and I've been trying to attend to the wealth area of my home. So in that sense, the financial like hacks is like like it's like the home is bringing it to me. But also the nesting is, Patty, I think you know, iowa i will take three years to nest in a place. yeah so
00:33:02
Speaker
And then I need to make that area, the wealth area, really cozy. So like for me, these ghosts. perfectly together. i don't know. That's incredible.
00:33:13
Speaker
Sorry. they They go together for me too because I am not good at I can unpack like nobody's business, but it will not feel homey. It's like things are just off and I have no sense of where do you even begin? will make the most bang for your buck? And How to be frugal about that too. Using the things that you have or like where to find things because you also don't want to just splurge.
00:33:38
Speaker
Totally. Or if you do want to spend more money and invest, finding hacks how to get the discount, buying a gift card through this credit card company so that you can get points off of the gift card. And like recently, DoorDash just did a gift card promotion where they were like 20% off. And I was like, well, that's just that's just free money. going to buy DoorDash gift card and and use it for food.
00:34:10
Speaker
and stuffs. Because sometimes I do believe in the splurge or in the investment. Sure. So that you're not, it's not breaking and then you're buying something to replace it later or just because I want it And because like, I just really want it But, um but I also think that there's like a way to do it so you can at least maximize what you're spending on that item.
00:34:35
Speaker
so But I would love to know how to feng shui my home for wealth. I would love to know about that. I heard on a podcast this woman who calls herself Space Doula.
00:34:47
Speaker
went on her website and she has a quiz where you can answer the quiz questions and then figure out what area of your life needs work. And then she tells you what part of the house that is because apparently there's this Bagua map, which... separates your house into different sections that correlate to those aspects of your life.
00:35:08
Speaker
And the wealth part is the back left corner of the house. And then the career part is in our houses. It's like the middle front of the the house and that's the kitchen. And I was like, this explains so much because I don't attend to the kitchen practically at all.
00:35:29
Speaker
So I got to focus some more attention there. Interesting. What did you see when you looked in the back left? Okay. When you said that, Charlotte, I...
00:35:42
Speaker
I swiveled around and looked to the back left corner of my apartment. And that is the office slash dressing room. It's a little room off of my bedroom that I turned into an office. It's also where Bugs litter boxes.
00:35:56
Speaker
So no maybe he's shitting shitting diamonds. Who knows? But- Oh, okay. Yeah, I like that. No, that's not going to work. um yeah i We cannot turn cat shit into um anything of of wealth. But it's a space that I first, when I first moved in, I was like, what do people do with this? Because there's the walk-in closet and then just this like- more room. and I was like, what do you do over here? Like, I guess I could put my desk over here. It's usually in the bedroom, but now we have more space for it. And it has been a really nice place to brainstorm, to program classes, do playlisting, work on creative graphic design projects, stuff like that. And I do feel I would be podcasting there, but there's not always the best reception. so
00:36:48
Speaker
I'm out here in my front right corner, which you said is the job section, right? Or wait, for the front. The middle, yeah, the front middle is the careers. And then the front right, I'm going to have to look this up. but I'm in the middle, actually. I'm in the front middle. Oh, okay, yeah.
00:37:09
Speaker
Perfect. that feels That feels appropriate for this conversation. Hmm. Yeah, I can i can link to to that site in our show notes. Amazing. yeah I also just love that name. Like, a what was it again? A what doula? Space doula. Space doula. I love that.
00:37:28
Speaker
And then she, yeah, i maybe we should see if she wants to come on our podcast. There you go. Yes. I would listen to that. okay I think that, so in the front, it's going to be career in the middle, but to the right is going to be like looking at it. To the right is travel and helpful people. And to the left is inner knowledge.
00:37:50
Speaker
no My left is the liquor cabinet. There you go.
00:37:59
Speaker
How perfect. Okay. So do you have some hacks that you can share with us? Yes. Okay. And one actually has to do with my living space and with money and

Frugality and Hustle Strategies

00:38:12
Speaker
making money. i love side hustles. So walk dogs, I will pet sit, I'll, I do like graphic design and video editing on the side for companies and, you know, projects like that. I think my best hack was when I was living in an apartment where you were allowed to Airbnb, I
00:38:36
Speaker
your space. And I would take dog sitting jobs and I would stay at the house and then I would Airbnb my apartment while I was at the dog house. So you were getting paid twice for that time. Precisely. Yes. And I would clean the apartment myself so I didn't have to pay someone else to do it, which was great.
00:38:59
Speaker
So if you're in a space where you're allowed to do that and you have to be comfortable though, and like I do feel very comfortable just having strangers in my space and like sleeping in my bed and stuff. Some people are kind of weird with that and protective, which I totally get. But for that time of my life, and especially my current place, I'm not allowed to do that, but like If, for instance, Taylor Swift were coming to town, I think I would be like, I'm going to go stay at a friend's house and Airbnb my apartment because yeah people are going to pay really good money to stay here and go see her in concert because the entire like economy of a city is affected by when she comes to town. So do you feel like because of, I'm assuming that you live in a desirable neighborhood as well, like where there's a lot to do around you and things like that. So that clearly plays into the ability to actually rent it out on, that people would want to stay for Airbnb. Yes.
00:39:54
Speaker
Yes. cool the Landlord let you do that. I've never heard of a rental where they let you Airbnb it. That is so cool. I know. And I think they're cracking down a bit more on it at different places. But yeah, it was a really good side hustle me for me for a little while. And during that time, i was working a remote job, which I also did not love. I didn't love the job itself or being remote. But I would i would be like reveling in the fact that I would be working remotely at my full-time job
00:40:28
Speaker
at a house where I was dog sitting while someone was Airbnb-ing my apartment. I'd be like, wow, you're really maximizing your potential here. Yeah. I was like, you're making money everywhere. but that's amazing. Thank you. But yeah, I would say other hacks.
00:40:50
Speaker
Gosh, I'm a big Facebook marketplace person, which I know that's not a super, super like surprising hack. But if I need something, It's often my first place. And especially now that corporations are evil and we're trying to avoid Amazon and places like that. i That's my first look.
00:41:10
Speaker
Knowing, of course, that it may not be perfect. It may not be it may require a trip to go pick up. It might require like a little bit more work on my end, but it could save money in that way.
00:41:23
Speaker
And then it's crazy how many places in Chicago you can park for free. Just you wouldn't expect it in certain neighborhoods. But like when I teach at our Gold Coast location LaSalle, which is like a very busy street that goes all the way through these like very nice downtown neighborhoods. There is one side of the street where they don't allow you to park for two hours in the mornings. And then the other side of the street, they don't allow you to park for two hours in the afternoons. And so in the afternoons, I'll just go park on that one side. And then in the mornings, I'll park on the other side. And there have been times where I've circled the street just waiting to find parking for like 30 minutes so I can avoid parking in the garage for like a $4 fee. Like it's stupid. It's like, it's it almost becomes like a game to me where I'm like, how, bless you.
00:42:14
Speaker
Was that a cough or a sneeze? Bless you. It was a cough. Thank you. was trying to make it over here. nobody can hear it. I know. You're like, do not draw attention. And I'm like, did you sneeze? We'll have to put in a sneezing sound. Yeah. Put a big one in. Yeah. Yeah. Put that in in post. But anyways, yeah, I just love being able to like game the system long as I'm not like cheating someone deserves it. Like love gaming. I love gaming the system. Would you say that's like your number motivation for doing that? Yeah. I mean, I would say even if I were...
00:43:00
Speaker
fabulously wealthy. i think that I have a grind in me, like a grind set, LOL, um that in which i am always, the hustle is always kind of front of mind and ways to save are always front of mind.
00:43:17
Speaker
I'm I'm always kind of looking for that opportunity. And maybe part of it is because i just need to be frugal because I'm working my dream job, but unfortunately it doesn't pay amazingly. And I live in a very expensive city, blah, blah, blah. But I would say even if that...
00:43:36
Speaker
were not part of the equation and I was making a ton of money. i think it would is something that is so deeply rooted and in me that i i don't know that I would be able to stop.
00:43:50
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Like there's there's a charge that comes with it. Like, ooh. Yes. You know, kind of like, yeah, when people, I was going to say gamble, I don't know why that's the first thing that came to mind, but that...
00:44:01
Speaker
Yeah. Adrenaline. right You're coming in with a dollar and you could be leaving with a hundred. And that's, yeah, that's why people can, you know, become addicted to it because it's like, it's such a rush and so exciting. So I could totally, luckily I'm not good at poker or anything. So I- have stayed away from that and been fine. But like, I totally understand the appeal of it. i love going to Jewel or or the grocery store in general, and like getting all the deals and adding them to my account, and then checking everything out, and then putting in your phone number at the very end and watching the total just like go down and you can see the discount stacking. boom, boom, boom, boom. bla boom boom boom boom boom boom but You can see each one of them stacking and it goes from like 84 to like 53 and you're like oh my I did that I that Jewel and I did that together as a team but also I'm screwing Jewel got to couple because i feel like that yeah me and artist too screw you Jewel
00:45:12
Speaker
But I feel like, yeah, that would be a strong motivation for me, sticking it to the man. versus Like the money is is good, but I'd be like, oh, $30, maybe not worth the effort. But I'd be like, but sticking it to the man, that's worth the effort. It's worth the effort. and let me tell you, i created, i think it was something like 10 different burner email addresses so that I could shop at Fabletics.
00:45:39
Speaker
where it's an activewear brand where you when you sign up as like a VIP and you're basically subscribed then, and you have to skip every month, ah a charge that will happen. And you don't automatically get charged, but if you don't skip, they'll charge you. And that's how they get people.
00:45:56
Speaker
I was signing up these just like fake emails and getting 80% off of all the athletic clothes. And then starting feel a little bad. It is a company run by Kate Hudson. And while, yes, she is a celebrity, she is a human being. But then i heard on this podcast that she was like super snooty growing up. And she was like, do you know who my parents are? And I was like, oh, I feel great.
00:46:21
Speaker
I feel great. I don't do bad anymore. I was like, take that, you little snoot.
00:46:30
Speaker
That's brilliant, though, because why not? Yeah, like the whole thing, oh, ah a first-time user only. Well, I can just create an account, and I'm now a first-time user. And especially Fabletics, that's something that's basically a write-off for work for you. You know, I mean, not that you're writing off, but yeah you need it. You need it. so Yeah. The amount of leggings I go through in a single week is insane. yeah so So anyways, it was it was helpful. Yeah, for the job, exactly. And and I didn't feel bad at all.
00:47:03
Speaker
was like, stick it, stick it.
00:47:07
Speaker
It's funny because I've been meaning to get the Schnucks is the grocery store here. And I've been meaning to get their app on my phone for so long, just because they always ask, do you have any digital coupons? And I'm like, no. And I'm like, ah yeah, you're so dumb. Like I'm leaving, I'm leaving money on the table when it could be so easy to just do the digital. Schnucks is such a cute name though. Like Schnucks run by like a sweet, sweet elderly Little couple.
00:47:38
Speaker
No, i'm i'm not going to give you any bad news. I don't know for sure, but I did look into it because when I couldn't go to Target anymore and i was like, oh my gosh, are all corporations bad? And the answer is yes. But i was like, who owns Schnucks? And should I be concerned, especially because Missouri, most people are racist And homophobic and transphobic and xenophobic and whatever, all the things. um So I was like, oh, probably they're bad. But I didn't find anything ah awful. And they allow their employees to unionize and are paid well. So I'm like, okay, I still feel good about at least I can go there.
00:48:21
Speaker
Yes. Incredible. And like, yeah, it's not like using digital coupons is going to bankrupt them. They give them to you for a reason. So I say go off. Exactly. Yes. Any other like of those hacks? Like financial? I was just thinking, okay well, here's something that I actually messed up. So my friend is a Chase Sapphire Reserve. No, she's Chase Sapphire Preferred.
00:48:47
Speaker
credit card member. And she said, you can get a lot of good points, blah, blah, blah. And she sent me the the form to fill out so she could get a referral. And i accidentally signed up for the fancier one with like a pretty big yearly fee. And I was like, how did how did i accidentally do that and pay the money for it? But I will say quite quite a hack if you use every single benefit that they give to you. So for instance, they will give you $10 month, no, two separate credits a month on DoorDash to use at a grocery store, convenience store, or like retail.
00:49:29
Speaker
So you could use it at Target, but I'm not going to anymore, but you could. They have $150 StubHub credit. They have a travel credit and that goes for parking and lifts and all these sorts of things. so I have utilized every single...
00:49:48
Speaker
opportunity in that credit card that I can so that I can make it worth the annual fee. Let's see other hacks. I mean, the grocery store one is a really good one. There are so many coupons that you can get that aren't listed on the shelves just through the app of the grocery store.
00:50:05
Speaker
Gosh, I feel like, oh, you know what? Another one that I actually haven't used, but just recently heard about was...

Traveling with Trusted House Sitters

00:50:13
Speaker
there And I'll have to send the link to you, but I heard something about vacations that people have booked and then are no longer able to go on They can resell them. Have you heard of this?
00:50:28
Speaker
No. So almost like how people buy tickets to events, but then can sell them on like a third party market. So this is a vacation? Precisely. And wow it's like non-refundable tickets. Wow.
00:50:42
Speaker
that they're like, oh, we no longer can go and we did not purchase any like trip insurance or whatever. So we are going to try to sell it for less. and I'm not in a place right now where I'm able to travel a ton just because of my job, but I am definitely going to be looking at that in the future.
00:51:01
Speaker
And it's just kind of a fun way to be like, okay, who... booked vacations that were so great and now they can't use them as like inspiration. right. Okay. I got another one and this is to do with travel too. And if you're animal people, there's an app and website called Trusted House Sitter.
00:51:19
Speaker
Have you heard of this? No. No. Okay. So you pay...
00:51:26
Speaker
$120, I think, in the beginning for a year membership. And then you are, they do a background check on you and all of this stuff. And you have to show your space, like take pictures. You have to do like a little introduction to yourself on the website so that they can make sure you're good people. And then you can either use trusted house sitters as a place for you to stay in another place for free, or you can use it to have your space and your animal cared for for free while you travel.
00:52:00
Speaker
and So it's like a chair, like a trade trade, almost like how um couch surfing used to be, except maybe it's safer. Interesting. I just used it. i just went on a trip with my college roommates And I have this cat that I recently inherited. My friend found him in the trash. That's a different story. But um yeah, but he came to live with me and I was like, I don't have any arrangements made. that I was looking on these apps and people are charging like 70, 80 bucks a day for just a cat. Like you don't even walk them, anything. And like, listen, i if I had the money, I would pay someone that because they're still taking their time coming over, you know, all of that. And like, it's, I greatly appreciate it, but...
00:52:47
Speaker
I got untrusted house sitter. Instead, i just put the dates that I would be away. i put like any amenities that my apartment comes with, like, you know, air conditioning or heat, obviously heat, like TV and Nespresso maker whatever. i put like where I'm located, trains that are close, buses that are close, you know, other points. And then the person who came to stay is a recently graduated college student who's living at home with her parents in the suburbs of Chicago. And she is neighborhood shopping. And so she really wants to live somewhere in the city, but she has a nowhere. And she also kind of wants a break from her parents, which is so reasonable. go out her weekend in the city Exactly. Exactly. So she came and stayed.
00:53:32
Speaker
with my cat bug for five days and it was free for her to live, so stay somewhere cool in the city and free for me. So it really is. And people are doing this. i have friends who did it in the French quarter, right in the front, in the heart of New Orleans.
00:53:49
Speaker
They watched like two elderly cats and then they stayed there for like three weeks and worked remotely. That's brilliant. And wait, so they do the background check. And do you have to physically be there to let them in No, but you can, and they recommend doing like a vibe check.
00:54:10
Speaker
So doing, this is actually fun. So I had originally a couple who wanted to stay here. And then something happened where their date's were not perfect for when I needed someone and they were going to have to stay in at a hotel.
00:54:24
Speaker
And then they called and said, we're so sorry. We have to cancel. we found different dates that would work better. And we're so sorry. And, you know, maybe we can try to see you when we're in the city and hang out. And so I was like, oh, no big deal. So I went with this other person and she ended up being fabulous. And then I ended up meeting these people and they're kind of shopping to maybe live in Chicago. And we went to the Catcade, which is like a cat cafe,
00:54:47
Speaker
With arcade games in it. And we became friends too. And we were talking about Trusted House Sitter and we were like, it does feel like people, good people gravitate to this site. And what's nice is you have your listing and then people apply to it. So it's not like you have to take the first person. You can look at them. You can see their social media. You can, you know, chat with them back and forth. They kind of sell themselves to you. um and then you can go with whoever you think is good. And like, you know, Obviously, everything is fallible. like We're human beings. And I haven't had a bad experience yet. But like it's honestly, it seems like a really good hack that if I were able to travel more, i would use that. And it's international too. Oh my gosh. This sounds amazing. Wait, and so then do you also rate each other? You know how you do on like...
00:55:38
Speaker
so Okay. Yup. And so right away she was like, her place was so clean. The cat is perfect. So snuggly, blah, blah, blah. And I was like, Sophie's amazing. She sent pictures constantly. Like I felt very at home with her in my space. I came back. It was, you know, neat as a pin. So yeah, you and your ratings are, you know, like you can reference those when people are applying. So that has been an incredible experience.
00:56:03
Speaker
hack for me, especially because lodging is like such a huge part of travel, you know? Absolutely. Yeah. And then you get to be able to like stay in areas that are more neighborhood, like just like the, one of the pros of Airbnb.
00:56:17
Speaker
Exactly. and you get to hang out with animals. And you get to hang out with animals, which is just so incredible. Yeah. So I would say that is my probably like best hack that I've found in the last like few months would be trusted house sitters. Nice.
00:56:35
Speaker
That's awesome. So do you have any homework for us? And if you don't, that's totally because I already thought of a few things. But do you have any homework for us in terms of how we can engage with this interest of being yeah hackers? Okay. So there's a bank that I want you to hack into. Okay. And we're each going to get a cut and then we can use it for discounts. um No, okay. My homework for you both is to, especially you, Patty, because you have a remote job that you're not a super...
00:57:12
Speaker
fan of being remote, you could maybe with this trusted house sitter thing, depending on the things that are tethering you to home, like you may not be able to travel as easily as everybody, but like, um, but for both of you, honestly, look at trusted house sitter and i can send you a link to it as well and see if it's something like you would want to do And then my other homework was would be, i was going to say to get burner email addresses and sign up for everything for a free month or whatever. um But you probably already done that. So I would say trusted

Improving Living Spaces and Collaboration

00:57:48
Speaker
house sitters. And then I'm going to start thinking about my apartment with the feng shui in mind that you brought up Charlotte. So maybe we all do that.
00:57:57
Speaker
Yes. Okay. Yeah, Charlotte, share that link. I know you said you will in the show notes and share it with us so that we can all kind of take a look at yeah our spaces in that way. and And then feel like we we didn't get to the nesting part really even. So are we going to give us your quick nesting tips? Okay, I'll give you my quick nesting tips. I mentioned this before.
00:58:23
Speaker
Temporary wallpaper is the greatest thing I've ever discovered. it does not leave any sort of tarnish on your walls and it completely transforms your space. I know this is a podcast, but here's a wall that I just did. I did gray wallpaper. And then I'll send you a picture of my office slash back left-hand side of my apartment where money happens. That is like a beautiful wallpaper as well.
00:58:52
Speaker
And I just love that very much. And then... I would say, oh gosh, wait, do I have any nesting tips? I mean, I would say, i would say the only tips I have for nesting, I guess, are if you're like new in a space and you still have boxes and things that aren't settled. I would say spend time unpacking and finding places for things.
00:59:18
Speaker
Like I have shelves, for instance, that I've been needing to hang since I moved in a year ago. And I think this is gonna kind of inspire me to go hang those and take them out from under my couches and like put some stuff on the shelves. Yeah, there's a TikTok where this girl, this is kind of an aside, but also similar. Like i I think about... Okay, making a space your own. Sometimes that takes time. And sometimes it's easier just to be like, I'll do that later. I'll do that later. I'll do that later. There's this girl on TikTok who will ask her friends, what is a task that you've been putting off for a long time? And let's do it together. and let's see how long it takes us.
00:59:55
Speaker

And my friend Cheyenne, when she came to visit, was very nice. She's a perfectionist, but she was like, this looks great. It doesn't. Um, but she was very nice about it. And I keep telling myself, but Cheyenne said it was nice. Um, and, but I'm like, oh my gosh, why didn't I think like I could do temporary.
