Please excuse my crackly voice in this brief podcast update; I'm fighting off a cold that is very likely due to all of the wind-tunnel walking I've been doing in Chicago this winter.

Check out these awesome RE podcasts if you're looking for content to keep you occupied and educated while I'm away! 🤓📚

Introduction and Apology

00:00:00
Speaker
Hello, hello, everybody. I wanted to get on here personally and just apologize for having missed uploading last week.

New Career Transition

00:00:08
Speaker
I've been in the process of really transitioning into a new life, essentially in Chicago. I got a new job. I'm not quite sure what the rules and regulations are at that firm for sharing details about that on a public platform.
00:00:26
Speaker
I will get to the bottom of that and as soon as I'm able, provide a little bit of explanation and summary of what it is that I'm doing these days. But I am working as an analyst at a global commercial real estate company that I can definitely share. I really did it solely for the reason that in my previous internship, which spanned just about a year, I was really fortunate to land that amazing opportunity right out of college.
00:00:57
Speaker
It was made very clear to me just how important it is for any person with significant ambitions in the real estate industry to gain a very comprehensive understanding of its financial underpinnings, you know, whether that be from an investor's standpoint or otherwise. I mean, you just cannot be a competent nor I think should you be a confident, confident, a confident principal.
00:01:26
Speaker
if you don't have that technical education when it comes to how exactly
00:01:33
Speaker
to raise money for projects, where those funds end up falling in the capital stack. A really cool upside

Seeing Real Estate as Financial Assets

00:01:40
Speaker
of my current position now is that as I walk to and from work, as I spend my weekends downtown and I'm surrounded by all of these just gorgeous skyscrapers, I'm less and less seeing some engineered creation, like a physical building, but I really am thinking of them as
00:01:59
Speaker
assets, you know, I'm looking at them and I'm seeing the capital stack. I'm wondering, you know, who the sponsors are, where they've obtained their mortgage loans from, when it was that goes close, what the circumstances of their operating statements are, just what things look like on that front. And it

Break and Future Plans

00:02:18
Speaker
really has been life-changing. I do know I'm in a good place. But I do just want to give notice that because so many things are up in the air right now in my life,
00:02:29
Speaker
I do think it's the right move to take about a month off or so from uploading, focus, getting into the rhythm of things. I do also want to line up just a whole queue of guests for this upcoming year that better align with the overall direction that I want to take this podcast in and
00:02:46
Speaker
I'll elaborate on that just a bit. I do intend to continue doing career-specific deep dives into a whole variety of real estate professionals, very much in the vein of what I've been doing, but I do want to incorporate some different themes just kind of into the narrative of guests that I bring onto the show.
00:03:07
Speaker
Like I said, we'll touch back on that.

Avoiding Career Stagnation

00:03:09
Speaker
But really my motivation for that decision is realizing that at the end of the day, whether you are like me and you've just started your career in this industry or you're starting to look into it as a student, it can be so, so easy to get into
00:03:26
Speaker
factory mode is kind of how I've begun to think about it, where your attention is pretty solely occupied by the tiny repetitive details of your work responsibilities or in the pressure of trying to figure out exactly which cog in this hugely complex real estate machine that you want to be long-term, right?
00:03:48
Speaker
So

Showcasing Real Estate Careers

00:03:49
Speaker
I at least know that I would personally enjoy and definitely benefit more at this point from finding sources of inspiration in people who have been extremely intentional about using real estate to shape their unique lifestyles and maybe even personal philosophies, whether that be by way of a particular career or investment strategy or
00:04:11
Speaker
by adopting some sort of individualized project. And I guess if I had to analogize what I'm trying to do here, I think a lot of us are on the assembly line. My friend mentioned this the other day, and it was really kind of a perfect representation of where my mind is at these days. So a lot of us are on the assembly line just making car pieces day in and day out, and we're looking down for the next one that's going to reach us. There's a frantic, repetitive pace to it.
00:04:40
Speaker
I want to create something that reminds us of why we love cars. Why is real estate worth learning about? In what ways can we wield, like we personally, how can you personally wield its wealth and freedom generating principles to benefit our own lives?
00:04:58
Speaker
Are there means of doing so out there that are better suited for our personalities and budgets and goals and anything that might have occurred to us previously? That's the benefit of listening to podcasts like this, right? You're getting exposure to perspectives that you maybe aren't running into within your friend group or your family or your work

Listener Engagement and Podcast Changes

00:05:19
Speaker
crowd. And I really, I do want to make that as fun and inspiring as possible for listeners.
00:05:25
Speaker
I have done a few episodes already that touch on these sort of subjects. They've definitely been some of my favorites to record, and from an analytics perspective, clearly some of yours as well, so I do feel good about this. Be prepared to see a lot more lifestyle content on the show. If you'd like to suggest a guest feature to be interviewed, I really would love to hear from you.
00:05:49
Speaker
Feel free to reach out to me via the email in my show notes. That should always be there. I'll get back to you as soon as I can. One last thing is I will be making some small aesthetic and presentation changes to the podcast just as it evolves. So yeah, these are all things that are going to be on my plate for the next month or so. And I hope you guys understand what I'm trying to do here.
00:06:11
Speaker
In the meantime, I've got a bank of existing episodes. If you want to pull from those, there are plenty of really interesting real estate topic featuring podcasts on Spotify. I can add a few recommendations of cool things that I've been listening to just on my commute to and from work in the show notes here. So I hope you guys have a great month and I'll see you in March.
