Jarrod Dyke: Hey everybody, welcome back. It is the Fancy Rugby Ganks. My name is Jared Dyke.
Grumpy Old Prop: I'm Ben Glauser.
Jarrod Dyke: Let's go. got lots to do, lots to talk about. um Maybe not that that much to talk about, but there's plenty things to unpack in the prim from this weekend. We can talk about... That
Grumpy Old Prop: Pop top for me.
Jarrod Dyke: was a crack there. Aha!
Jarrod Dyke: crack there
Grumpy Old Prop: It's time for pumpkin beer.
Jarrod Dyke: ahha Aha, aha, I see. There
Grumpy Old Prop: I'm leaning into it this year.
Jarrod Dyke: we go.
Grumpy Old Prop: the The whole pumpkin thing. I've take every so often, its like, I take a couple years off, like, I'll have a little little bit of it, but this year I'm like, no, um'm I'm about the pumpkins.
Jarrod Dyke: No shame in it.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah, that's what like, you have to, you have to every so often just like, go full bore into it because it is enjoyable, but it's also like, it's cringe, but enjoy, cringey-able.
Grumpy Old Prop: if that But, um yeah, no. I figure if I like kind of shy away every so often every couple of years then. that's where I am now. Pumpkins.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, it'll make it more enjoyable.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah, had some pumpkin coffee this morning, too.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. Yep.
Grumpy Old Prop: So. That's how far that's how deep that's how deep the whole goes.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, that's usually not bad. Depends on Yeah, it depends on where I get it from. Because sometimes it's it's clearly, like, wicked artificial.
Jarrod Dyke: And, like...
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: There's that, it's too much. And I'm just like, oh, okay. This one was not was no good. um But the good ones, man. Yeah, they're, I would eat those.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: I would have one of them. Eat those, drink those, whatever it is. Sometimes did you eat it, right?
Grumpy Old Prop: yeah
Jarrod Dyke: um Yeah, I would drink one of them.
Grumpy Old Prop: Oh, I got the slushy like this morning. I got the slushy coffee that they have. They call it like a freeze up at the local. It's like a not quite a diner because you don't really eat in. um But it's like a.
Grumpy Old Prop: ah Sandwich and coffee shop.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: It's fucking delicious.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: And yeah, they had a freeze in it So she's like, it's just kind of like a slushy coffee. i'm like, you're not. You're not tying me away from it.
Jarrod Dyke: Not turning me away.
Grumpy Old Prop: Like, you're like you're you're only selling me more on this thing.
Jarrod Dyke: Tim Hortons makes those sometimes, I think.
Grumpy Old Prop: So let's let's go.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. Yeah, I think Tim Hortons makes those sometimes. Those are good.
Grumpy Old Prop: hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: Anyway, uh, make sure that you buy a good friend, George, the fancy rugby geek and coffee or beer, uh, busy, and busy lad as, as he always is. Um, especially with the, all the competitions in, you know, going full noise, Prem and URC being the the big ones with two formats to cover plus plus.
Grumpy Old Prop: no
Jarrod Dyke: Cause he, you know, he tries to do others, but ah the even the two main formats that we now have and have returned to beautifully and wonderfully,
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Grumpy Old Prop: And it's a job just to figure out which URC matches are actually happening each week.
Jarrod Dyke: um
Grumpy Old Prop: So.
Jarrod Dyke: No shit. Jesus. Storm Amy had other ideas. Yep.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah. Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: Anyway, so yeah, make sure you get Kevin McCoffee or beer. There is no discrimination here on this podcast, nor should there be in sports or in life. Again, we're spoiled for choice.
Jarrod Dyke: Off we go.
Grumpy Old Prop: So I'm going to go with one that's, again, um it's fucking annoying that we have to have these conversations again. But um that I'm going to talk because, ah again, we're a podcast and we talk about podcasty things. There's the ah interview podcast, whatever you want, debate between Ta-Nehisi Coates and Ezra Klein, who is like a major Democratic Party influencer.
Jarrod Dyke: Mm-hmm.
Grumpy Old Prop: And like Coates is arguing that wouldn't it be good to like fix social injustices and just injustices in general and set things right. And Klein does this whole thing where it's like, well, you can't make changes if you don't win.
Grumpy Old Prop: So we have to win and we like have to cut out like in, in so many words, he's like, we have to cut out this group and this group and this group just so we can get the right votes to win. And Coates is saying, you you don't realize it because you're cutting out these groups and then they don't want to vote for you. And those are the votes you need to win.
Grumpy Old Prop: And the other people who are in those, who are maybe not a part of those groups, all they see is that you're willing to cut people out just to win.
Jarrod Dyke: Correct. Right.
Grumpy Old Prop: and And that's unsettling to them. and And then they're thinking, okay, well, who else are you going to sell out eventually?
Jarrod Dyke: right
Grumpy Old Prop: and it's like you can And it's just this argument by too many liberals. It makes the far right argument for them. And ultimately that's what that's what people like Ezra Klein do.
Grumpy Old Prop: And, um, as we can see in both the U S and the UK, like you look at what's going on right now in Italy with the, the, um, people out in support of the, uh, flotillas.
Jarrod Dyke: Right.
Grumpy Old Prop: Now you don't see it on American news. I'm not sure where you might see it. Um, outside of like social medias, but it's like, yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: Social media. Yeah, social media.
Grumpy Old Prop: Um, and there's all sorts of protests in other countries about this. And, uh, Like here, we're just debating, oh, who else can we sell out? And who doesn't matter?
Grumpy Old Prop: And like, you know, we sort so what? We supported Israel.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: Like, that's not a bad thing.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah,
Grumpy Old Prop: It's like, yeah like, it's just.
Grumpy Old Prop: We can't sort it out without like and a coalition that's going to do it. And the problem is the coalition that that really wants to be the ones in charge or the. yeah The ones that don't want to do this shit, it's fucking annoying.
Jarrod Dyke: yeah they don't want to actually do something. They just want to be there.
Grumpy Old Prop: also um last bit it was hilarious that chicago police department are just getting like tear gassed by ice and ah federal um whatever whatever police and they're are they're just like running away like little bitches and it's like dude the people who are like actually protesting and and and taking this are putting so much more on the line than you you guys run away and they're like can't you arrest them they assaulted you like you're a police officer you have jurisdiction or something like they can't just
Jarrod Dyke: Fucking stupid.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: shoot you like that and the police are like, we're just going to run away.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: It's like. Anyway, cowardice.
Jarrod Dyke: Let's say they have a word for that.
Grumpy Old Prop: That's the kind of cops we get.
Jarrod Dyke: yeah you know. Anywho. Also, in other news, make sure that you grab our Patreon because we aren't far away from getting our first and analytics update.
Jarrod Dyke: So if you, and if you haven't experienced the analytics of, especially the the draft format, it may, so it may save your ass.
Grumpy Old Prop: We are not. I want to.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: Let's be honest.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right. um And it may yeah yeah help with some trades like we'll we'll have and it'll be, you know, it'll be rough at first because we will, you know, this the um the the data points we have aren't going to be perfect, but it'll at least be the start of it.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, the Lions the lions's players, for the most part, haven't returned.
Grumpy Old Prop: Exactly. So we're we're just going to go with it.
Jarrod Dyke: no
Grumpy Old Prop: And, you know, first couple of weeks, teams are still figuring out who they are. Northampton Saints.
Jarrod Dyke: Absolutely.
Grumpy Old Prop: oh
Jarrod Dyke: Yep. Yep, that was my other thought as well.
Grumpy Old Prop: And, you know, you're not going to get the best details from it, but, you know, expected points, things like that are going to help. I'm excited to do them again.
Jarrod Dyke: Yep.
Grumpy Old Prop: It's been, it's been a long time. It feels like so.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. Yeah, nice nice to no longer be under that type of pressure where you can't.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right. Like this week, I'm going to start entering all the data we have from the first two weeks and then
Grumpy Old Prop: validating it and then we'll see if it's good to go for week three and then it'll go.
Jarrod Dyke: Might be it. And there's a chance, as there always is with us, there's there's a chance it gets delayed. But be patient.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: We'll get it to you. Promise. We're not like for low rugby and just going to, you know, deflect blame.
Grumpy Old Prop: Oh,
Jarrod Dyke: okay let's dive in um storm amy causing a few problems in this week's this week's matches here
Grumpy Old Prop: But yeah, it makes them makes it more fun. um
Jarrod Dyke: yeah let's go to the rec uh bathsail mean
Grumpy Old Prop: fight Find you someone who loves you as much as George Ford loves his own foot.
Grumpy Old Prop: Because you're in that circumstance where you're you're sailed.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: Your whole purpose is that you have these big bashing forwards.
Grumpy Old Prop: And you're in shit conditions. And great, you can kick three. But you're playing a team that in whatever condition, they're going to score tries. Like the markers already said, you got to start out.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, they've showed that before.
Grumpy Old Prop: Like if you want to win this on the road, the first thing you got to do is score a try. And especially if you can score try your way, which is kick it to the corner, try to maul it, try to pick and go it, exit or your way in.
Grumpy Old Prop: Because that's just, that's kind of, You know, if, or, you know, suck everybody in and then spin it wide. Cause they can do that too. They have good, good back three. And so you're in the the, the, the best chance to be able to do one of those two things.
Grumpy Old Prop: And you kick for posts again and again and again. and it's like.
Grumpy Old Prop: Bathsward tries, you know, both teams. Well, I think both teams put four scores on the board. And Bath won by 12. And it's like, yeah, Sale didn't fire the shots they needed to fire. You're going at the champs. You can't beat you.
Grumpy Old Prop: And you're bringing a pea shooter to a gunfight. That's not, that's not the way to win.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. And there's...
Jarrod Dyke: There's not a lot of resources coming to sales way once we're this this week's over, whether we're talking about guys returning from TRC or we're talking about guys coming back that are going to be able to return because of Lions Rest, whatever it is.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: There's not a ton coming back.
Grumpy Old Prop: It was like Tom Curry.
Jarrod Dyke: ah He's going to be hurt until after the November internationals because that's the timetable they gave.
Grumpy Old Prop: that's That's right.
Jarrod Dyke: And LCD might get back at some point before that as well, but TBD.
Grumpy Old Prop: but But he's not their best hooker right now. Jabulu is.
Jarrod Dyke: i would I would rather have Gibaloo. Although, him swimming up the side. You know what? It's not his fault that Witthorv doesn't know what the fuck he's looking at.
Grumpy Old Prop: yeah Right.
Jarrod Dyke: Let's be honest. so He shouldn't have been rewarded that that turnover, but you know.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right. Hey, I
Jarrod Dyke: He... he He's like, you know what? I'm going to try this and let's see how shit this referee is. Man, you really are shit. Awesome.
Grumpy Old Prop: can't believe I got away with that.
Jarrod Dyke: I can't believe I did that. I can't believe you got away with it.
Grumpy Old Prop: Is this guy serious? but No, he's he's not. He's not.
Jarrod Dyke: No, he's shit. um But yeah, you know, and the Bath scored things in very different ways, which makes which is what's made them dangerous the last couple of years, obviously.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: um Whether you're talking Arendelle just being, I mean, that's a walk-in for Arendelle. I didn't pretty much anything with open space and less than 20, 20 meters is, um, uh, red path.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. That was a great, that was a good score.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: then rolled up the sleeves and no bottle and fell over the line.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yep.
Jarrod Dyke: Like, you and then, oh man, the drama there.
Grumpy Old Prop: That was all right.
Jarrod Dyke: It's like, yeah, they were, and they, they had that on their bingo board a couple of times and they finally, finally got it.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: I was like, I was like that, that, that works.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right. Finally worked out.
Jarrod Dyke: That works well.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: um But, yeah, so, I mean, knuckleheads like, yeah, when you have knuckleheads like Vin Rain, and Bamber's a big body, but he just feels like he's kind of a just, not, I don't want to call him debuters, because that's and that's a really terrible insult.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: But he just feels like he's just do-do-do-do-do out there and just kind of lumbering around.
Grumpy Old Prop: yeah
Jarrod Dyke: It's like, big guy, you've got so much size that you could really use to your advantage, and I'm not totally convinced you're doing it. So maybe try and work on that.
Grumpy Old Prop: I just look at those, that you know, that their are forwards and like it's a problem that their one, two, and three are really the only forwards there that I want carrying the ball.
Grumpy Old Prop: How does Tom Curry get fucking just I'm sorry, not Tom Curry, Ben Curry. I'm sorry, you're you're still a Curry, right?
Jarrod Dyke: Venturi.
Grumpy Old Prop: And you still get all this, like, love and praise, but Max Ajomo takes you down in the open field. I'm sorry. Like, I, didn't i you know, love Max. No, nothing against him. But he had to do, like, no work to take him down.
Jarrod Dyke: Right.
Grumpy Old Prop: Curry just got the ball out. and It was a kick pass. He caught it. He caught it. And, like, he didn't make a move at all. He just ran in a straight line. And Ajomo was like okay, and tackled him.
Grumpy Old Prop: Like,
Jarrod Dyke: Happily, sir.
Grumpy Old Prop: if you're yeah if If you're supposed to be this great player, if you're so especially if you're supposed to be an international player, hell, you're wearing a seven in a Premier Prem Rugby now, sorry, ah match.
Jarrod Dyke: Happily. Thank you.
Grumpy Old Prop: Like, you're scoring a try. Like, you look at some you so look at the average seven, even just the average seven in in the Prem.
Jarrod Dyke: you should You should, yes.
Grumpy Old Prop: And, like, guy look at the guy opposite of Guy Pepper. Guy Pepper gets that ball there.
Jarrod Dyke: I mean, I think any one of those back throwers scored over him, scored before Curry does, honestly.
Grumpy Old Prop: He's against...
Grumpy Old Prop: yeah right like i would take miles reed and miles reed isn't much better than than ben curry and in an attack but he's still better
Jarrod Dyke: but he finds ah But he finds a way to do the job and and score when you're in the league.
Grumpy Old Prop: right because he's lanky as shit and and can just shove shove you off as you're making a tackle too even like ben just kind of runs until you get tackled that was yeah it's um it's it's not
Grumpy Old Prop: not acceptable.
Jarrod Dyke: No.
Grumpy Old Prop: it it It triggers my, ah I don't know what, but um yeah, that's, that's poor.
Jarrod Dyke: No.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. Yeah. And yeah, I'm sorry, but
Jarrod Dyke: Wilgrey John, like, the yeah, I don't know what the, we'll see what the news comes out about him.
Grumpy Old Prop: Well, I'll be talking about him later. um i will be talking about him later.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, know, but we'll see what the news comes out about him. I e would not be shocked if he cops a band. retroactively from that game.
Grumpy Old Prop: That was awful.
Jarrod Dyke: That was...
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. Woodthorpe didn't know what the fuck he was looking at, clearly.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: But...
Grumpy Old Prop: And it it's yeah, especially the second time, like the first, it's one of those, you're lucky not to get a yellow, but like you're on a yellow one. You do that again. And it's like, that's, I'm going to treat it as if you already had a yellow and just going straight red.
Grumpy Old Prop: um But yeah, we'll go we'll come back to that. That was poorly, poorly done by Wilgrif, John, and and extremely poorly done by Woodthorpe.
Jarrod Dyke: And without getting too much into... Right. And... without getting into Will Griff John too much. That's why this is one of the reasons why I don't like 20 minute red cards.
Jarrod Dyke: Like number one, if you're going to do that and you're, and you're, and I'm your coach, I'm like, listen, that's never happening again.
Grumpy Old Prop: who
Jarrod Dyke: Or you're, you will not be on the team.
Grumpy Old Prop: so
Jarrod Dyke: Like, and don't tell me they don't have options.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: They, they can throw another body out there that looks like Will Griff John. It's fine.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: um They're not going to miss anything, but, the coaching the coaches aren't necessarily overly inclined to do so because they can just throw another clone of somebody like him out there and he can be an asshole all he wants.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: Now, that's on the coach to fix and say, hey, stop being a total dickhead.
Grumpy Old Prop: but it
Jarrod Dyke: Don't do this because you're going to cost us.
Grumpy Old Prop: But it's also it's also on the refs, though.
Jarrod Dyke: and
Grumpy Old Prop: Because, like again, Woodthorpe saw it the first time and said, you know what?
Jarrod Dyke: Oh, yeah, totally.
Grumpy Old Prop: I'm goingnna i'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. And then you saw it the second time. He's like, I don't know.
Jarrod Dyke: Very lucky.
Grumpy Old Prop: you almost had to be talked into a yellow. And it's like, dude, that's the second time he's done it. Like the first should have been a yellow, especially because you're talking about the 20 minute red, right? So that means that it's not as, as harsh as a red, which means that it should be and more encouraged.
Grumpy Old Prop: So you say that, you know, I can't call that like, to me, everything about that was dangerous. It was foul play, certainly worthy of a card. If you want to say he, he tried to rap, And that's what mitigates it down to a yellow. That's fine.
Grumpy Old Prop: But you got to give them something the first time. That's that's just for player safety more than anything else. And then the second time, like should have been a red no matter what.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: It have been a straight red. um Or at the very least, if you were too scared to do that, at least it's the double yellow and it's a red.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: Chicken shit.
Grumpy Old Prop: like That's the way this is supposed to work.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: Although from I don't even remember if that was...
Jarrod Dyke: And i was I was thinking about it
Grumpy Old Prop: they might have The first one might have been even within the 70-minute mark. I don't remember what it was. It wasn't... when did he When did he come in?
Jarrod Dyke: Wasn't far. It might have been 60-odd, I think.
Grumpy Old Prop: Hold on a sec.
Jarrod Dyke: So it's on there. It says when he comes on.
Grumpy Old Prop: Okay, so yeah, a PokéForgeR came off at 58 minutes.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, so it was like 60 odd when he did the first one.
Grumpy Old Prop: So it's okay. All right, so he so would have been on because it was like the last minute of the game. And that's the other thing. It was like the last minute, so it's like a A yellow, not not that big a deal.
Grumpy Old Prop: He's not missing that much time. But so, yeah, hopefully he gets cited off off of that.
Jarrod Dyke: No.
Grumpy Old Prop: And hopefully Woodthorpe um also gets get some sort of of poor grade for that.
Jarrod Dyke: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: That's that's awful.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. I mean, that's that's a different conversation that we could have on an entirely hour-long podcast if we wanted to, plus um just refereeing in general.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: The one thing I was thinking about with the 20-minute Reds, too, is like there are some teams, even professional teams, that tend to just lean in towards the negative of when you have a 10-minute, when you have a yellow card.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: This is just going to make them do it for 20 minutes instead of 10. That's all it's going to do.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right. Right.
Jarrod Dyke: It doesn't help the game. When you know you're down to 14 forever, you just have to nut up and say, you know what? We got to go for it anyway because we ah we're here.
Grumpy Old Prop: <unk>
Jarrod Dyke: We have no choice. Let's go for it. There will be teams that will do it no matter what. And those are the teams that should be rewarded. And there will be teams that say, you know what? We're just going to survive this red card, yellow card now.
Jarrod Dyke: And it detracts from the game. It really does. And that I can't.
Grumpy Old Prop: but But the whole thing is we can't we can't make that argument. And i i I'm not disagreeing with you, obviously. But we can't make that argument unless they start actually handing out those cards.
Jarrod Dyke: Yep.
Grumpy Old Prop: like and And you say, you because the now the threshold has to be lower.
Jarrod Dyke: Mm
Grumpy Old Prop: The threshold has to be lower for a yellow card. when In terms of foul play and the, refer the the I'm sorry, the um um like the the level for the the red, the threshold for the red has to go lower.
Jarrod Dyke: hmm.
Grumpy Old Prop: Because if you're only going to 20 minute red, that's got to be lower.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: So that's why, like this would be the first, stop the perfect opportunity. Yeah, he's out either way, but dude, I gave you one for free. Like that's not, that does then come back on, on, know, that you respect the referee by not doing that shit again.
Jarrod Dyke: And now you're
Grumpy Old Prop: Like I gave you one. No, now it's gotta be extra harsh red card. Like, doesn't matter what.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, say bye.
Grumpy Old Prop: So that, that's the other thing.
Jarrod Dyke: Say bye to your friends.
Grumpy Old Prop: If, if they're not gonna, right.
Jarrod Dyke: You're going to the shower.
Grumpy Old Prop: If they're not going to do that, then what does it matter if they do a 20 minute red, if they're just not going to hand them out or they're not going issue, you know, treat them that way. Cause then that should lower, like that may, maybe that makes the game safer in that, you know, that first one.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: if you know, if that ah properly was done with a 20 minute red, then like maybe the the second one never happens, but maybe it's also, oh, that's the threshold for a red.
Grumpy Old Prop: Fuck. Okay. got Boys, we got ah like, if nothing else, maybe it doesn't put your team in the, you know, in the, the, like the threshold is lower than something that man, your team deserves to be down for forever.
Jarrod Dyke: yeah
Grumpy Old Prop: It is now, okay. Your team deserves to be down 20 minutes, which is like, You know, that old like, oh, that's kind of a ah like it would be soft if it was a red, a yellow just doesn't seem like enough.
Grumpy Old Prop: That's what this is for. So that we don't get to the, that's got to be a straight red. Like that's the only way this this works to protect the players.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: And that, so Woodthorpe really, right, right so Woodthorpe really fucked that up.
Jarrod Dyke: It's the only way it can work. Yeah. Yeah, no, i'm I'm inclined to agree. All right, let's go to the Sandy Bumcrack.
Jarrod Dyke: um
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, you know, it was more of what I would say is typical for a Rob Baxter team. And you look at the guys that put the tries down, Vincent, Fadi Woboso,
Jarrod Dyke: um yeah, okay, they mauled one over, which is their typical style, so that's fine.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: And then, you know, I have no idea how the fuck Skinner got one, but, you know, it's Newcastle, I guess. That's probably what you can track that one up to. So, but really really, you know, four of them were scored by guys that just know how to create and can do it almost on their own.
Jarrod Dyke: You know, and Vincent definitely, I think he...
Grumpy Old Prop: Oh, it was, yeah, it was like an interception. Like the ball, like,
Jarrod Dyke: That's right. um remember that now.
Grumpy Old Prop: i can't remember exactly what it was, but yeah, he, it wasn't, there he made a good play.
Jarrod Dyke: That's right. Yeah. For Skinner.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. But really that's like their, their attack isn't necessarily creating anything, especially with dumb dumbs like Daffy and roots in there.
Grumpy Old Prop: No, it's not.
Jarrod Dyke: Like it's just, you know, and this is a new casual team that don't have a director right now, really.
Grumpy Old Prop: Roots was was poor in this match too.
Jarrod Dyke: So there's, there's that on top of it and they're, yeah, they're still waiting for, you know way to get healthy, which would be helpful.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Grumpy Old Prop: who
Jarrod Dyke: Um, you know I think Sam Stewart, they want Sam Stewart healthy. Obviously, you know he had to drop last week and hasn't recovered since, so they're waiting on that.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: and Then there's there's still some good things going on with Newcastle, and you know i'm not um I'm glad we don't have to play Amenaki Mafia until you know the the return fixture in a few months' time because that's not another human I would want to tackle.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah. Right.
Jarrod Dyke: um and her I like Hurl a lot. He's played well the last two weeks.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: but yeah, it's still Newcastle. There's still like, there's still a lot of crap that you need to fish out of this whole thing. I don't know why Fergus Lee and Warner is not starting most games right now. Like he's, he's good enough.
Grumpy Old Prop: yeah
Jarrod Dyke: Like um I'm not sure what they're, they're doing right now. If they're trying to at least get some results here, he needs to be in the lineup. um He did not do six, two either. Cause they don't have the, they don't have forwards that are worth it, honestly, at the minimum.
Grumpy Old Prop: right
Jarrod Dyke: um So, yeah. And you know, there's, Yeah, this is what this is kind of the game you're going to expect away from Kingston Park for Newcastle. And yeah, okay, Exeter did the job they were supposed to. Congratulations. You also have Manny Feuoboso, who is not human.
Jarrod Dyke: And Ross Vinson, who has, know, if he was not on this team, he would have been a thing a long time ago.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah. they need He needs to get to a ah real team.
Jarrod Dyke: You know, and...
Grumpy Old Prop: like It's unfortunate that he's... he like It's almost like Callum... I think Callum Chick would fit... Exeter better and Vincent would do much better on Gloucester.
Grumpy Old Prop: I'm sorry, on um and Saints.
Jarrod Dyke: Nothing absent.
Grumpy Old Prop: um
Jarrod Dyke: Yep.
Grumpy Old Prop: Because, man, that that guy's got speed to burn. And it's it's fun to watch him, but like you just it's weird because, you know,
Jarrod Dyke: Yep.
Grumpy Old Prop: i
Grumpy Old Prop: I seem to remember Exeter having this eight at one point.
Jarrod Dyke: Wasn't bad.
Grumpy Old Prop: who Who was fast as fuck.
Grumpy Old Prop: And I seem to remember them having some measure of success, like they maybe even finished top four once or twice. um and And you'd think that maybe they would want to use this guy like that, and they just don't.
Jarrod Dyke: yep
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, which is actually perplexing knowing that they've had a guy that's had success wearing that number in a similar role.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right. Who who plays a similar way?
Jarrod Dyke: And Vincent's not as bulky as Sam Simmons was, but you know he's still bloody good.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: like Italy are lucky to have him, honestly.
Grumpy Old Prop: But like use him that way. And maybe he is because like, i don't, you know, like.
Grumpy Old Prop: Fuck, it's just you never know. um He's fast because that the whole point is he's fast.
Jarrod Dyke: No, i and I'm not'm not against it.
Grumpy Old Prop: Like that was that was Sam's biggest strength was his speed and fitness where he could just run ah all around the park, basically, and then just insert himself where he wanted to and.
Grumpy Old Prop: Just find find space and that like you're the guy just roam and find space and attack.
Jarrod Dyke: Yep. Yeah, right.
Grumpy Old Prop: Like they can do that. It's not that hard.
Jarrod Dyke: No, no.
Jarrod Dyke: Anyway. Um, let's head over to Welford road. Uh, so to your point from before,
Jarrod Dyke: you look at, you know, Quinn's more or less dominated the first half and not, not totally, but man, they didn't look the same team that they were in the second half by by any means.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: And neither did Lester. They were, you know, it's like they swapped kits or something.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: Um, But the what Lester did with their advantage and with their possession and with their tails up was put the ball down over the line.
Jarrod Dyke: And then, you know, for a Quinn's, they, one, two, three, four penalties up until, with the port along with the Porter try, up until the Walker yellow and the wheels just came off.
Grumpy Old Prop: yeah
Jarrod Dyke: Totally. Like, totally. And i' I'm not sure I've seen quite that and much unraveling for a while. In that, in that sense, and they didn't score another point.
Grumpy Old Prop: Nope. And yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: So you should.
Grumpy Old Prop: There's not much more to be said like this. It wasn't like a. ah I don't know. It wasn't more like a chess match because it was like one team scored all their points and then the other team scored all their points and it's just the second team scored more like.
Grumpy Old Prop: But then it also goes back to that kicking kicking for points when. Especially Quinn's, like, your DNA is not three-pointers. You got to be true to who who you are.
Jarrod Dyke: Nope.
Grumpy Old Prop: And I feel like they kind of moved away from that. um
Jarrod Dyke: Which is weird because Nick Evans is still there.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: So would assume he would not want that, but maybe that's too much of an assumption.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: And then, and then, and I know Wilson leaving is, has kind of put a wrench into it and there, it sounds like they're expecting Jones to leave as well at some point in the next few months here.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: um But still like you, don't your identity is there. Like, you know, the coaches should come in and understand how to fit their ideas to what they have in front of them.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: And these guys are used to play in one way. You can't overhaul a system right now anyway, because you, you, your, your preseason is gone. Wilson's gone. Like there's, you don't have the time to do it.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: So just adapt yourself ah as a coach, adapt yourself to what you have in front of you. And and let's let let them loose a little bit. And know, Quinn's will get a little help with Marcus Smith coming back here, but man,
Grumpy Old Prop: ye That's little bit.
Jarrod Dyke: That's, and that's, that is a great help. At the same time, they, they've got a few other issues. I got to kind of sort out here.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: No, think, I think one guy that's going to be returning. And um I think he, I think he's been away with the Pumas is petty. And that might not be talked about enough right now because he, he's coming from Bordeaux who, you know, if you haven't heard, update that they're, it sounds like they're actually kind of shit this year.
Grumpy Old Prop: that
Jarrod Dyke: um But, you know Last couple of years, they've been ah very fun team to watch, a very good team to watch.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: So they'll he'll be used to opening it up and letting and you know letting it all hang out for a little bit, which is great. And then you know he's a guy he's a big guy that can play six, should you need him to.
Grumpy Old Prop: ah
Jarrod Dyke: But I think we'll slot into that second row next to either CCS or Treadwell. with ease and i think that'll be a nice bit of bulk to throw in there some international experience as well so on so like there's a lot to to talk about with this which I don't think has been given enough credit so we'll see how I think he's think he's still he's a little banged up so we may not see him right away um
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah. Yep.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: let's see if I can find something here but yeah and then I mean, prayers to Tigers, they they responded.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah, I mean, and especially losing, they lost their 10 right before the and the match. um We had some insider knowledge of that happening as they as they were, you know, one ah one in in the group chat.
Grumpy Old Prop: um One of our guys is a Leicester fan and and letting us know, ah because especially since I i had picked um Bailey is as my start of the week.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. yeah
Grumpy Old Prop: oh And he's like, so Bailey's not out there. It's Searle and and Stewart warming up their kicks. And I'm, you know, and leave the warmup to the amateurs, you know, he'll be fine. and ah No, um, he would not.
Grumpy Old Prop: Um, but credit to that, you know, and that's, it's, it's, you know, the Billy Searle.
Jarrod Dyke: yeah
Grumpy Old Prop: So, you know, respect must be paid to to that gentleman too, um, for coming in and doing a job.
Jarrod Dyke: god damn yeah um yikes that's that's terrifying um do we know what happened bailey did you pick something up in the in training this month this week or was he sick
Grumpy Old Prop: I have no, fuck if I know, um,
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, okay. I'm sure it'll come out this week.
Grumpy Old Prop: Sir, sir, kind sir who who gave us that inside information. Can you let us know?
Jarrod Dyke: Duncan.
Grumpy Old Prop: but Don't.
Jarrod Dyke: Mr. Insider track over there. um
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm
Jarrod Dyke: But yeah, but you know, ah there's a lot. There's a lot I like on the Leicester team too. And, you know, it's it's funny.
Grumpy Old Prop: hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: There's... I'm very much convinced that Kata and Parise are redundant in this team right now. And I know they're both great players and they're fantastic ball carriers.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: But the emergence of Woodward and Wand has made them redundant. And you want to hang on to your young players. So you're going to have to let one of these guys walk.
Grumpy Old Prop: right
Jarrod Dyke: And i don't know who's bringing in the bigger bill, but I let them walk, honestly.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah. I can't disagree with that.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: Because it's, and you know what though?
Jarrod Dyke: Rafael returning to the team helped.
Grumpy Old Prop: either Either way, because you want you want someone there who can do the job. Like if, you know, it's one thing to to keep your guys there. But like if you have one guy in the rotation who can either come off the bench or or start a a match here or there.
Grumpy Old Prop: Like, Of those two, it's not Kata because he's like a walking card um or at least has been.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: And it's like one of those I'd take.
Jarrod Dyke: Has been.
Grumpy Old Prop: And I think Parise is a little bit better in the open field. So that's the way I would roll. But.
Jarrod Dyke: That would be my preference. But again, whoever's hauling in the bigger bill, I might let him walk.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: um Save yourself some money. And then there's there's a guy that I'm a um' a fan of. I really like him a lot. And I hope his growth continues this season and to Leicester's benefit. And it's Elione.
Jarrod Dyke: And I like, you i you know, i in i think in a perfect universe, and I'm sure a lot of Leicester fans would agree, and I'm not a huge Cracknell fan to begin with, but I think in a perfect universe, he could take the eight shirt off of Cracknell and they could put, you know,
Jarrod Dyke: who Liebenberg, whoever the fuck they want to at six.
Grumpy Old Prop: hey
Jarrod Dyke: Um, you know the new kid, uh, Morrow there, Rafael at seven.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: I don't think there's a question about like that. Like that's, that's where he belongs and stick early on it at eight.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: And I think that'll do them good to get, I think he needs to take another step to get there. I personally really like him a lot. So that's just my thoughts and opinions on that whole thing.
Grumpy Old Prop: No, I like that a lot too. Cause I think he's, I think he's a better eight than like, yeah, I think he's a better eight than crack. And like, that's still a good, you know, that if that's your three there, you know, you're, you know, between Morrow, I'm not a set bar between, I only own a crack. No, and Raphael at six, at seven and eight.
Grumpy Old Prop: And then one, whoever the reserve is, that's not bad. Um, so we'll see, like, I think, you you know, they'll get to the lineup that they think is best, which I think is the one you're talking about with crack, no coming in reserve.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: I mean, shit. Could you imagine, that you know, I have to deal with like, you know, uh, Rafael for 50 minutes and you're like, fuck, okay.
Jarrod Dyke: yeah
Grumpy Old Prop: He's gone.
Jarrod Dyke: Even, yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: And then in comes crack, no, and it's like, okay.
Jarrod Dyke: he'd He'd be better against tired legs. I agree.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: I agree.
Grumpy Old Prop: Like no fun.
Jarrod Dyke: Yep, he'd be better against tired legs. no Nope. Nope, yep, absolutely. I think that'd be a great roll for him. All right, ah let's go over to the Stonex. First off, fuck you, Flo, and your shittiness.
Grumpy Old Prop: ah
Jarrod Dyke: This game, I had to... detach myself, dissociate myself from this game. so I couldn't enjoy it as much because this should have been a very enjoyable game because the experience provided to us by the provider over here was so bad.
Grumpy Old Prop: It was terrible.
Jarrod Dyke: Like re repeating five minute chunks over and over again. And I'm not kidding. I wish that was hyperbole. It's not. I'm, it's bad.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: And i have to, I got a response from them finally, but I'm, I got to read it later.
Grumpy Old Prop: And then like...
Grumpy Old Prop: and watching the replay. um So I was seeing like it would freeze up for like, it was almost like, um you know, when you watch like in the dark times when we had to to go to the the shading sites and and watch.
Jarrod Dyke: Mm. Yep. Mm-hmm. yep
Grumpy Old Prop: And sometimes it would just like freeze up for a minute and then it would join you, join you back in like two minutes later than when you, when you left and like maybe something had happened, maybe something hadn't, but then you get to watch for like a good five or six minutes and then it does it again.
Grumpy Old Prop: And you know when you when it's free and you're like, yeah, um um this is not quite legal and who cares, i just but I get to see what's happening. Okay, you can you you kind of allow for it. You're like, oh, this is just a shitty feed, but it might be the best I can do, so I'll just stick with it.
Grumpy Old Prop: But this is like, we pay for this and it's not inexpensive.
Jarrod Dyke: I have
Grumpy Old Prop: And the feed was just that bad. And then even on the replay, what I watched today, it was, or last night into today,
Jarrod Dyke: um it on right now.
Grumpy Old Prop: I watched the first half last night and then the the second today and it was like, it would just cut out all those parts.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: So as soon as it would like fuck up, it would just go and like to where it came back in. So you'd miss like two minutes at a time here and there, but and then it but it flowed and it was just like,
Jarrod Dyke: Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: It was bad. It was bad.
Grumpy Old Prop: it was awful.
Jarrod Dyke: No way around that.
Grumpy Old Prop: um Right.
Jarrod Dyke: But as the game goes, oh, man. poor I mean, I feel for Bristol. Like, Tom Jordan came off in this game.
Grumpy Old Prop: I do too.
Jarrod Dyke: Reece Sammick came off in this game.
Grumpy Old Prop: who
Jarrod Dyke: Like, jeez, they're just dropping like flies. it I mean, they still have some great talent in here.
Grumpy Old Prop: They do.
Jarrod Dyke: But, fuck. Fuck. Like, I... I think Marami got banged up again. Like...
Grumpy Old Prop: He had himself a Hattie, but still, yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: i Yeah. I... Oof. Oof.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: Just... Yeah. So... But... But... um Yeah. Saracens... Okay. Okay.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: This is...
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm
Jarrod Dyke: This is nice. this is This is what we want. And, you know, it's funny. Like, you didn't even notice. It's like you didn't notice, but, like, how Farrell just took a backseat to just let everyone else just do their thing.
Grumpy Old Prop: hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: it's like, all right, I don't need to be the guy today. I'm just going to kick the points when called upon.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: And then, you know, I'm going be here otherwise.
Grumpy Old Prop: Distribute. I mean, I think he did.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, distribute.
Grumpy Old Prop: Pretty sure gave Bracken both of those tries. Um, like, yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: I think so, too. One of them was a seed. I was like, okay, that'll work. Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: I
Jarrod Dyke: yeah And yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: i mean, like.
Jarrod Dyke: And series picked up a few little, it's a good thing. Frigging Jinx. He should be allowed back this week. Cause no Theo Dan Hadfield's kind of still rough a bit.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: The, the young guy they we're going to have on the bench was had to drop even ah and Hadfield wasn't supposed to play as much as he did.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: Like, ye so yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: Good thing. He's coming back.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right. um Also, i do want to shout out Hugh Tizard for being... This is the guy we we saw at Harlequins that we were excited to see at Sarri's. The way he played in this match was it.
Grumpy Old Prop: And if he's going to play like that next to Morrow...
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: I think like that gives him great options if he is stepping his game up between ah himself, Morrow, Ezequiel, and just kind of, you know, you can give guys, you can give each other a rest, and and then you got Olamidea, Sadiqe, just like
Grumpy Old Prop: Yep.
Grumpy Old Prop: and
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: slowly working his way through the ranks here and he's played well the last couple of weeks so
Grumpy Old Prop: i
Grumpy Old Prop: He's massive, too. He's such a unit.
Jarrod Dyke: he's huge yeah he's huge I was watching the England U20s from the year they won it and rugby pass has a thing where you can just pick up whatever game they happen to be showing at the time and that was one of the games and I was like he is a man amongst boys out there he is a him and who's the who was the captain?
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: Carnduff FinCard of like units.
Grumpy Old Prop: Oh, Finn. Yeah. Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: ah was like, holy shit, guys. Like, what did they feed you?
Jarrod Dyke: All of it, but like, holy shit.
Jarrod Dyke: Big boys.
Jarrod Dyke: Understatement, to say least.
Grumpy Old Prop: And they're good, too. like That's the thing. like It wasn't just that he was big. It's because you know anybody can be big. um um but I'm professionally large. That's my job. um But like and they can move a little bit, and Sadiq looked like he just flowed, which is scary.
Jarrod Dyke: You get around the paddock pretty well, yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: Yep.
Grumpy Old Prop: Once again, blame people like Jared, who have taught large, large, large people to be athletic. God damn it, Jared.
Jarrod Dyke: my best over here.
Grumpy Old Prop: What are you doing?
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: Is this really the contribution you need to make to the planet?
Jarrod Dyke: yeah but 100%. Oh, man.
Grumpy Old Prop: Nice.
Jarrod Dyke: oh man Yeah, it is. ah Let's... Oh, yeah, and then we'll we'll get it to it, but the Max Malin's dry. Oh.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah, we'll talk about that later.
Jarrod Dyke: Oh.
Grumpy Old Prop: but that'll That'll come up also.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. Let's go to the gardens.
Grumpy Old Prop: You mean god the shed, the King's home.
Jarrod Dyke: And...
Grumpy Old Prop: It just felt like a garden.
Jarrod Dyke: the Oh, yep. right Right team, wrong wrong location.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: um Yeah, King's home. You're right. Sorry.
Jarrod Dyke: Brain half one place, half another.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah. fine kit cant Can confirm.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, the one we watched is the one that we watched this morning. um
Grumpy Old Prop: Holy shit, there were a lot of yellows in that game.
Jarrod Dyke: ah Sadly, my son fell asleep during this match, so I had missed a little bit of it.
Grumpy Old Prop: Oh.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. Yeah, Northampton might want to remember how to play in the second half. Just an idea. Sure, Shuffield Towson would like to not do that every week, whether it's, you know, getting a draw out of it or having to play squeaky bum time and eke out a win. Like, that'll be good for, that'll be better for his health his heart health, I can tell you that much.
Grumpy Old Prop: And I would say, you know, if I was an opposing team, I'd say, you know what, let's play a warm up half just like before the game. That's that's how we will warm up for the game and then we'll play the game.
Jarrod Dyke: the Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: How's that sound?
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, something like that.
Grumpy Old Prop: Because.
Jarrod Dyke: um
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah, they scored all the points until like until 40 minutes was up. And that's when Cameron Jordan, not Jordan Cameron, um went over for.
Jarrod Dyke: Correct.
Grumpy Old Prop: for you fans of the league. um And I do, I did feel partially responsible for it because so in the, again, in the group chat, we finally have a Saints fan, um which is fun.
Jarrod Dyke: Oh, yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: And, and right.
Jarrod Dyke: Much to our Tiger fan de gri chagrin.
Grumpy Old Prop: So it's like, so it's so funny because I'm so used to just being able to, to comment on any game because we're mostly as neutrals. um And now we have, we have representation from, think most of the prem at this point,
Grumpy Old Prop: And, um, and so, yeah, to to be like, you know, oh, somebody say, man, Gloucester look like shit this half.
Jarrod Dyke: Most of the corners, yep.
Grumpy Old Prop: And then as I would just rip back, you know, oh, so did Exeter last week. And the States fan comes and it's like, don't say that shit here.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, about that.
Grumpy Old Prop: and
Jarrod Dyke: ah About that.
Grumpy Old Prop: And then of course I pressed it.
Jarrod Dyke: We saw what happened there.
Grumpy Old Prop: Cause so who else? I can't remember who came in, um, from who it was. It was a chief.
Grumpy Old Prop: Um,
Jarrod Dyke: Oh.
Grumpy Old Prop: Jack Ginnard came on for Gloucester. It's like, oh yeah, former former Exeter player.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: It's just like Exeter again. Another another connection.
Jarrod Dyke: Shut up.
Grumpy Old Prop: And he's like, shot it.
Jarrod Dyke: shut up Shut up, you. oh man yeah i
Grumpy Old Prop: And then, yeah, and almost i i feel like I almost snark-willed it into existence. though um sorry Sorry about that, Matt.
Jarrod Dyke: just a little bit the um i mean the good news for saints is they have help coming know there's fin smith who just signed a new deal this week um Alex, Alex Mitchell, obviously makes this machine go. Henry Pollack coming back will be enormous as well. Like there's, yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: And then I think slate home will eventually get, hopefully get healthy here. Tommy, Tommy Freeman will be a difference maker and questionably. Um, yeah. Um, but yeah, so there's, there's two, there's two midfielders who, which is why I thought Freeman made me think because people talk about putting him in the midfield at some point.
Grumpy Old Prop: Can we talk about the, go ahead.
Jarrod Dyke: Um, that played in this game and they were for two different reasons. Very good. Um, Hotch and will Joseph like hotch obviously played, but played his role in one man of the match.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: Well, Joseph, like this is, it's so sad that he's so injury riddled because sorry, knock on wood. Um, It's so sad that he that he's had things go the way they've gone because, man, when he's on, it's brilliant to watch.
Jarrod Dyke: It's so fun to watch.
Grumpy Old Prop: hu
Jarrod Dyke: But sadly, you know, he just keeps getting derailed with, ah you know, his possibilities and his opportunities. Just always, like, something comes up. And poor fella, I feel for him. And, you know, I'm sure Quinns weren't happy to let him walk, but they also have to, like, look at themselves and say, all right, we need someone that's going to be out there.
Jarrod Dyke: most weeks, you know, barring, you know, any call up or whatever. That's yeah. And unfortunately that hasn't been him. Now, if he resurrects everything at Gloucester, they've gotten a steal because they already have a few great midfielders and they lost one on top of that.
Jarrod Dyke: So, um, yeah, I, I, I do hope it works out for him, but yeah, just, know, brilliant.
Grumpy Old Prop: Here's.
Grumpy Old Prop: While we're on Gloucester, I got a question about them.
Jarrod Dyke: Mm-hmm.
Grumpy Old Prop: When does there their um back row get better? Like, what do what do they have that I'm missing there that we're not seeing? um I'm trying to... Because I'm, like...
Jarrod Dyke: c club clement is the only good one i'm thinking of right now because i don't care for level that much um let's have a look this is probably the team we're gonna see them be for a bit
Grumpy Old Prop: Not really.
Grumpy Old Prop: Like, this is...
Grumpy Old Prop: I think that's going to be a big problem for him.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah, that's not that's not good.
Jarrod Dyke: no it's not awesome
Grumpy Old Prop: Because, like, it's just that they're not they not difference makers.
Jarrod Dyke: No.
Grumpy Old Prop: Venture had a decent game. he got one over, but, like...
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. Well, people are exclaiming about man. The player, not the but the gender.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: um
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: With two ends. um And we'll see. i not unconvinced, but I'm not totally convinced either.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: So we'll see what happens with that. um Yeah, lots to talk about with that one. But Other than that, yeah, their back row is going to be... Someone's going to need to put their hand up.
Jarrod Dyke: i don't know. Not Louis Love, though. He's been there, and we know who he is and what he is. and He's slightly better than good on his best days and average to below average on his bad days. So, so yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: There's goods and bads about that, but that's not what I need in my back row either.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right. and And that's that.
Jarrod Dyke: So...
Grumpy Old Prop: I thought that was really a problem for them in this match. That's one of the reasons why they weren't doing so hot is that it took, you know, it took a lot of work for them just to get the possession and then they would do good things with it.
Grumpy Old Prop: But if they just had some little bit better fetchers in that, that, um, back row they they would have had a lot more opportunities and you know it was great to see thorley out there um kicking ass ben loader had like they all those backs had a good game but um you know of course the prop had the glory try that was awesome and they with through the ash flash
Jarrod Dyke: Oh, this is this is what rugby needs. We need a floppy stock. Mom, like, this is what we need.
Grumpy Old Prop: mm-hmm
Jarrod Dyke: Like, this is what we need. And I'm, oh, game's gone. Fuck you.
Grumpy Old Prop: No.
Jarrod Dyke: Go away.
Grumpy Old Prop: mean
Jarrod Dyke: We don't need you. You are not helpful.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: Go away.
Grumpy Old Prop: You score a big try, have fun with it.
Jarrod Dyke: You know, you do not help things.
Grumpy Old Prop: ah especially Especially as a big man.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, how God forbid that you have a little bit of fun for fuck's sake.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: You know, and this but we were we talked about before. This is why the women's game will do better eventually than the men's game in terms of attracting new fans because they're not afraid to have a little bit of fun and, you know, poke around a little bit, whatever.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: And this the old heads don't care about women's rugby at all anyway.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: So they don't have to worry about them.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: So it's like, yeah, whatever. big deal.
Jarrod Dyke: Let's look before we get into superlatives.
Grumpy Old Prop: It's like, trust me, you will appreciate you like, just don't worry about what they but those particular people say. You will be feel just fine when you sign those endorsement checks.
Jarrod Dyke: No.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, no shit, right?
Grumpy Old Prop: Just saying like you'll you'll feel all right with it.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. Let's see.
Jarrod Dyke: It's a toe injury on LRZ and tom it was Tom Jordan's ribs.
Grumpy Old Prop: Okay.
Grumpy Old Prop: Oof.
Jarrod Dyke: But unfortunately for LRZ, he had to like, he was being helped ah helped to the locker room.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah, he was getting tickled.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: So, you know, you got to hope that's not a busted digit or something because that's annoying to recover from, especially if you're relying on your speed and running and all that shit.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yup, Joe Burrow. Yeah. Fuck, that's just... That... Hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: All right.
Grumpy Old Prop: No fun.
Jarrod Dyke: Superlatives.
Grumpy Old Prop: Okay. Okay.
Jarrod Dyke: let me Let me start because didn't talk about it at all in terms of the matches, but um golf clap and a tip of the cap for James Slipper, calling it, ah calling time on his career.
Grumpy Old Prop: No.
Jarrod Dyke: um One of only three players in the men's game to get 150 caps. It's funny. They're all forwards. I find that kind of weird, but it's like, yeah, okay.
Jarrod Dyke: Him as a prop though, especially like, And you I know you're less impressed by this, but James Slipper can play both sides of the scrum at an international level. I really want people to understand that that's not ah that's not a party trick.
Jarrod Dyke: That's not simple. That is a difficult task at international level.
Grumpy Old Prop: no
Jarrod Dyke: like Yes, okay, they're similar positions. Yeah, your roles aren't dissimilar, but there's a reason that they have specialist tight heads and specialist loose heads more often than not.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right. Right.
Jarrod Dyke: because you got different elements you're dealing with on either side of the scrum. And trust me, I hated playing. Anytime someone tried to make me tight head, when I became one of the more senior players on the club, I said, fuck you, you go to tight head.
Jarrod Dyke: Like there were not many people that could outrank me on that. So that was the fun part when I didn't have to do that anymore. Or I'd just be like, someone else do it and I'll go a second row. Like get the fuck out of here. I do not want to be on that side.
Grumpy Old Prop: right
Jarrod Dyke: So um yeah, with all that, James Slipper, classy operator, wonderful person from all accounts. um
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: happy retirement, but I know, I think we're going to still see him a little bit in super rugby, but um yeah, all done with the wall these and hell of a career at that level for sure.
Grumpy Old Prop: And.
Grumpy Old Prop: ah And I will say it does take a special type of per like it's not something you can just do to do that, as you said, like it doesn't it's it's a freak thing. It is like some people can play both sides. Some people just can't.
Grumpy Old Prop: Some people don't want to like it just takes. um
Jarrod Dyke: This guy.
Grumpy Old Prop: yeah Like me, obviously, like my I love being a tight head. I loved it. But if like you want me to play loose, like, sure.
Jarrod Dyke: You have issues, though. Let's be let's be honest about that.
Grumpy Old Prop: What's up?
Jarrod Dyke: so you have issues, though. Let's just be clear about that.
Grumpy Old Prop: That's fair. That's fair. um But yeah, it was always right like it was always weird for me to people were like because I love, but you know, the chances I got to play tight hat or loose head because I'm like, oh, this is so much easier. like Yes, absolutely. I will do this for Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: um
Jarrod Dyke: Exactly.
Grumpy Old Prop: So it's, it, but not everybody can still do that.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: Cause I remember there were times when I would go in at like a loose head and be like, I don't know what the fuck I'm doing today. And then like very next day I would do it and be like, Oh, I've been no problem. I get it. Like it's, it's such a weird thing to be able to do. And to, as you said, to be able to do that at that level is, um, you know, you don't just do it. It doesn't just happen. It's not something that like you can kind of control.
Grumpy Old Prop: You can either do it or you can't, um, But to do it at that level means you've done a lot of fucking work to do it. Because as you said, everybody's a specialist. You still have, there's so much to know about the technicalities of either side.
Jarrod Dyke: Right.
Grumpy Old Prop: So a lot of work by him and he made the game better.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: So thanks, Mr. Slipper.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. Thanks, Lips. All right. Anybody that outdid themselves for you?
Grumpy Old Prop: Um...
Grumpy Old Prop: outdid themselves really I'm i'm even going to go back to Tizard on this one um because to me it's like we haven't seen that in a bit and I don't you know and and I know it's going some of these are going to be a little Saturdays based but like a lot of what happened this week seemed pretty mean it's kind of set like not nothing's nothing shocking this week
Jarrod Dyke: Nice. Okay.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. um i'll throw a Jomo in there, too.
Grumpy Old Prop: yeah yep
Jarrod Dyke: Played really well in those really shit conditions over there.
Grumpy Old Prop: He took down an international flanker, like, with ease in the open field.
Jarrod Dyke: um
Jarrod Dyke: a
Jarrod Dyke: ah International Plank has his head up his ass when it comes to attack.
Grumpy Old Prop: Hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: um Shad it. Leo, again.
Grumpy Old Prop: Hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: Like, he was...
Grumpy Old Prop: Woodthorpe.
Jarrod Dyke: How... ah Like, come on, dude. like Like, you what are your standards? Really, guys? Like, what are your standards? Because the fact that he got another game is just appalling to me.
Grumpy Old Prop: Hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: It's like, really? What are you doing? And it it says also that there's nothing in the pipeline, so they're not doing work to develop It's like, what is going on here? Like, if you could just, world rugby in general, but especially this league, because it's the one we watch, pull your heads completely out of your ass, please.
Jarrod Dyke: All our sakes. fucking hell it's funny because most people would be like what the fuck yeah i
Grumpy Old Prop: And, you know, i'm for for my shat it, I'm going to go with George Ford. Because, again.
Grumpy Old Prop: no, kicking for po like just poor tactical day on his behalf. um that i think um I'm not saying it cost this team the game, but I think it certainly hurt their chances.
Jarrod Dyke: yeah think there's problems um
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, i think that I think that wraps it up. I mean, Quinn's in the second half just collectively until he pooed it.
Grumpy Old Prop: <unk> Yeah. Saints second half.
Jarrod Dyke: um
Grumpy Old Prop: Well, they scored six points.
Jarrod Dyke: Yep, almost.
Grumpy Old Prop: If they hadn't scored that, you know, they got in that second PK um this week.
Jarrod Dyke: a Never thought we'd say that about PK and the shit. um All right, so let's go with...
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: um How about we start with... ah Young player.
Grumpy Old Prop: Did lose you? Okay. Sorry, lost you.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, no.
Grumpy Old Prop: I think I lost you for second.
Jarrod Dyke: Let's start. yeah Young player of the week.
Grumpy Old Prop: Again, starved for choices, but Jack Bracken had two tries.
Jarrod Dyke: I had Jack Bracken in my head too.
Grumpy Old Prop: It's hard to to overcome that on this, you know, just on this match day.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. and da On debut. Yeah, really good.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: um
Jarrod Dyke: I decided to say I can't say, although I'll give the guy that had to stand in for readily a little bit credit. That's a tough place to be in. But refs of that.
Grumpy Old Prop: and I thought he did a good job too.
Jarrod Dyke: i
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: I'd rather have him than Leo.
Jarrod Dyke: Other than that, I can't give any of the refs anything. Fucking hell. And then coach.
Grumpy Old Prop: This is going to be because like it's, it's he needs a hug. um and that's Pat lamb. I
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, i think he does too.
Grumpy Old Prop: i don't know.
Jarrod Dyke: I'm not sure he'd take the hug, but, you know, kind of a hard nose man. I'm not sure.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: like the I think the heart might, might, might melt him a little bit.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: So virtual hug from afar, so I don't get so punched in the face, but still the guy's dealing with a lot and this team's still fronted up.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. Uh, huh.
Grumpy Old Prop: They still fronted up. There were times where I was like, I was actually like just rooting for them to score. Cause it was like, they've worked so hard that that um the Lua Tua almost try. you know second half, I was like, that if that came off, that would have been beautiful and well-deserved.
Jarrod Dyke: Oh my god. Dick hands. ah
Jarrod Dyke: Yep. No arguing for me.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: Try the week.
Grumpy Old Prop: The Malins try. i mean, the behind-the-back, give-and-go, stop.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: That's wonderful. That's wonderful work. it's you know and this that's This is the stuff that I would like to see more of from Ben Sale as well.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: Like, we we talked about, you know, there's there's definitely a good Vansale and a bad Vansale. Like, that's the good. You know, the days where it looks like he's been cloned and turned into lead Davies, I would prefer to not ever discuss ever again.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: um But yeah, that was just so much fun.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: And all started with the freaking, like, rewind all the way to Tom Willis with the shove with the little shovel ah shovel away.
Grumpy Old Prop: Mm-hmm. Bullying through.
Jarrod Dyke: And I was like, yep, there we go. And we're off.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: And this is why he's, that's why he's one, part of the reason why he won the match too.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: just making life miserable on everyone. Player of the week.
Grumpy Old Prop: My player of the week, um I got to say it's Ben Spencer. I thought the way he guided Bath was was masterful.
Jarrod Dyke: Nice.
Grumpy Old Prop: you know, Ojemo did his job too, but ah um Spencer had so many key plays in that game, played 80. You
Jarrod Dyke: Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Grumpy Old Prop: you know, in a team that went, didn't they go 6-2? um No, they didn't.
Jarrod Dyke: They did.
Grumpy Old Prop: i oh no, they did because Barber was there at 23. Yeah, we sneak him in that way. um So it's huge when they when you know you
Grumpy Old Prop: you need that Scrum African Go 80 and just really lead this team around the park. against us you know Still aren't bad. They just kind of fucked their strategy and tactics.
Grumpy Old Prop: um
Jarrod Dyke: Mm-hmm.
Grumpy Old Prop: But Bath still had to to navigate those ah those conditions. And Spencer guided them real well.
Jarrod Dyke: Yep.
Grumpy Old Prop: Didn't put a ah pass wrong.
Grumpy Old Prop: For guy whose job is to professionally pass a ball.
Jarrod Dyke: Um,
Jarrod Dyke: well, you know, yeah. Um, I'm going to, I'm going to in. He didn't get play of the match, but, um, I thought I'll, it doesn't have a huge impact on this lesser team.
Grumpy Old Prop: Hmm. Hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: I really do. And, you know, didn't start out great, but Hey, you know what? Banging the rest off for 40 minutes is fine. Um, remembered who he is and remembered what he can do and made know especially like him anywhere near the wide channels is terrifying so and yeah and you know there are there are locks that i don't want out there which is basically every one of them that's not him and a couple others he's not one as i alluded to
Grumpy Old Prop: Right. No, I guess I remember when, when he was first picked for even for England and I'm like, I don't see it. I know. I see it now. Um, said that for at least a year.
Grumpy Old Prop: So I'm sticking with it.
Jarrod Dyke: hmm
Grumpy Old Prop: I definitely can't argue with your pick there too.
Jarrod Dyke: I think we both have the same dick of the week.
Grumpy Old Prop: It's Will Griff John.
Jarrod Dyke: Yes.
Grumpy Old Prop: Who like you got away with it once.
Jarrod Dyke: yeah
Grumpy Old Prop: What are you doing, dude?
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. He'll be lucky if he doesn't get banned.
Grumpy Old Prop: Like, what are we doing?
Jarrod Dyke: like he needs to go He needs to go buy a lottery ticket.
Grumpy Old Prop: ah was That was awful.
Jarrod Dyke: That's how lucky he's going to be if he doesn't get banned.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah, right.
Jarrod Dyke: Alright, pick him.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah, because.
Jarrod Dyke: Pick them. um We'll jump right through it. Alright, so this week, sale Newcastle.
Grumpy Old Prop: Sale.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, Newcastle just aren't going to have enough.
Jarrod Dyke: Oh, man. Bristol Exeter.
Grumpy Old Prop: I still think Bristol can win this one.
Jarrod Dyke: I hope they can. I'm going to pick Exeter because I don't know what Bristol are going to wheel out there, even with Genji coming back.
Grumpy Old Prop: Well, with Genji coming back, um yeah, who knows what their back line, but it's just.
Jarrod Dyke: But like, oof.
Jarrod Dyke: and Like, who's going to play 10? I'm concerned about who's going to play 10. Is it Worsley? Like, jeez.
Grumpy Old Prop: Is Jenny still around?
Jarrod Dyke: I don't know.
Grumpy Old Prop: Like that's a serious question. like Hold on. Let me see.
Jarrod Dyke: um Joe Jenkins hurt himself in this game, too. And I think he's been think he's played there before. um i james i don't think they have James Williams anymore. If they do, he's hurt. So, like, yeah. faith They're going to be...
Jarrod Dyke: in some deep trouble and for who fills that 10 shirt unless yeah, unless Jordan comes, it comes through healthy, like, but they put them, took them off.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah. its
Grumpy Old Prop: Or James. Oh, James.
Jarrod Dyke: Cause I think he,
Grumpy Old Prop: James Williams is still there. He may he can play 10 if he's healthy.
Jarrod Dyke: yeah. If he's healthy, if he's healthy.
Grumpy Old Prop: But then the question is who's playing out wide and it's going to be what Heward and Lane and.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: yeah
Grumpy Old Prop: zealous odds are just just like, sorry, dude, you're playing.
Jarrod Dyke: I know.
Grumpy Old Prop: We need you.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. Right. Yeah. there's I don't think the Carrington guy was bad. i think he came off, but i don't think he was bad.
Grumpy Old Prop: hmm.
Jarrod Dyke: So maybe he can step forward. um Midlands, Derby. Saints, Tigers.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah, get back there.
Grumpy Old Prop: Well, Saints are going to crush it the first half.
Jarrod Dyke: yeah
Grumpy Old Prop: And let Lester are going to come back in the second half. um But this time, I think the Saints are going to win it again.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, I actually have no doubt as well because... While Leicester will have returns in Silver Northampton. um
Grumpy Old Prop: About to knock my beer over.
Jarrod Dyke: Bath Gloucester.
Grumpy Old Prop: What's left of it?
Jarrod Dyke: Try not to do that.
Grumpy Old Prop: I think it's pretty much empty. um I got Bath.
Jarrod Dyke: Yep.
Jarrod Dyke: Quinn Ceres.
Grumpy Old Prop: I'm going to go Saracens.
Jarrod Dyke: I am too.
Grumpy Old Prop: go with the homer pick, but um the way they're playing is just that good.
Jarrod Dyke: It is. It is. And we we... Yeah. The Stoop's not a happy hunting ground by any means whatsoever for Ceres, but they can they have won there before, so this wouldn't be the first time.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: um
Grumpy Old Prop: I'm just not sold on Quinns yet.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah. and
Grumpy Old Prop: And Sari's I'm pretty sold on.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, they... I mean, Marcus will make a difference, but it's going need to be a pretty big difference.
Grumpy Old Prop: who
Grumpy Old Prop: Right. Let's see what what Mark, if look, if if the unplayable Marcus shows up, then we're just trouble.
Jarrod Dyke: Oh, forget it. Never never happening. Yeah, we're totally screwed.
Grumpy Old Prop: Right.
Jarrod Dyke: Forget it. But, you know, if his friends don't help him, that'd be the other thing.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah, that's true. Because like if if Dom and also if we get the Dom Brent from two weeks ago versus the Dom Brent from this past weekend, um actually basically across the Quinn's back row, that's going to be trouble.
Jarrod Dyke: Yep.
Grumpy Old Prop: but Again, you add Earl to this mix. Yes, please.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, Earl will be back in the mix. um
Grumpy Old Prop: Morrow.
Jarrod Dyke: Morrow.
Grumpy Old Prop: Oh, him.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, just just that guy. You know, Gondos should be back.
Jarrod Dyke: I think Theo is getting healthy soon.
Grumpy Old Prop: Yeah.
Jarrod Dyke: McFarlane, not Dan.
Jarrod Dyke: Yeah, he's been banged up. So we'll see. But yeah, there'll be some returns to say the least for for both teams.
Grumpy Old Prop: I
Jarrod Dyke: But I think there's more returns expected for Saracens that will move the needle more.
Grumpy Old Prop: i agree.
Jarrod Dyke: Okay. That is that, friends. Ben and I are going hop over to the Fantasy Corner real quick and spin out the Champions League stuff and as well as start sits if you're going to join us over there.
Grumpy Old Prop: Later
Jarrod Dyke: We'll see you over there. If not, thank thank you very much for hanging out with us and listening. We'll catch you guys next week. Enjoy the rugby this weekend. Have a good one.
Grumpy Old Prop: later
Jarrod Dyke: Cheers.
