Zak
Hello and welcome to the Daily Southampton and the Daily Newcastle. We are joined by Ian from the Daily Newcastle Pod. How are you doing, Ian?
00:00:18
Iain
I'm doing, and I was going to say I'm in fine form. I know that's probably a sensitive issue for Southampton fans.
00:00:26
Zak
but I don't even remember what it's like to have fun at this point, so don't worry about it.
00:00:30
Iain
No, that's the one and only jibe I will do, honestly.
00:00:30
Zak
And as always... always
00:00:34
Iain
I think, um but I've worked through a games to be fair, you should have won at least three of them.
00:00:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:00:40
Zak
Yeah, you're you're right.
00:00:41
Iain
I think it's hard.
00:00:42
Zak
we've We've had lots of discussions about this. And of course, I've always, as always, joined by my co-host, one of our co-porters, Southampton, Gregory Elliott. How you doing, mate?
00:00:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'm doing good. I mean, Brenborough and Diaz isn't at Southampton to upset anyone at Newcastle anymore. It feels like we can be more amicable, it's fine.
00:01:03
Zak
Exactly. With DS out the door now, how can we all be upset with one another? you know it it will be fine. So so yeah obviously we we are coming into this game on not the finest piece of form in our history. and By that I mean we've won a game somewhere when so long ago now it feels like a distant memory. We've drawn two games which were pretty, one of the worst games of football I think I've ever watched in my life and the other one is so long ago I can't remember. Obviously
00:01:36
Zak
Newcastle, a bit of a different story. How is your guy's season going? Do you enjoy him this season?
00:01:42
Iain
it It certainly has picked up as we went into December. I mean, we were, we picked points up, case in point, first game of the season.
00:01:52
Iain
We beat Southampton, 1-0.
00:01:55
Zak
You did.
00:01:56
Iain
Didn't deserve anything out of that game. I mean, you know, we scored a breakaway goal and then hold on for the whole of the second half. We had a start of the season like that, where we picked up a load of points and were playing very indifferently.
00:02:09
Iain
We seem to reserve our good performances for the really tough games, if you like, which means that we were able to draw at home with them Manchester City and then beat Arsenal. But at the same time, lose at home to West Ham. Does anybody do that?
00:02:27
Iain
on
00:02:27
Zak
Oh, wheeling zones for everyone!
00:02:29
Iain
oh we had we had We had a horrible game where where we did everything but score and lost to Brighton.
00:02:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we actually, we didn't lose at home to her.
00:02:35
Iain
and and We did play quite well in that game, actually. So the performances were different and we stopped picking up the points. We got a little bit of a jump start when we drew with Liverpool and then its things seemed to be picking up.
00:02:49
Iain
But immediately we threw it all away and stopped playing in the second half to lose at Brentford. Dreadful game. How, apparently, had a one-to-one with all of the key members of his squad after that match? Probably telling them, you know, you think you're good. You've got to show you good. And we went on this run where we won nine on the bounce, which was wonderful. Put us up to fourth, got us to two two goals up in the first leg of the semi-final of the Carabao Cup. That's another sensitive issue to be talking. It's in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup. I'm sorry. That was an accident.
00:03:25
Iain
and
00:03:25
Zak
it's
00:03:25
Iain
When I was there on Sunday, when Bournemouth started undressing us in the first minute, and they didn't stop until the sixth minute of injury time, we were well and truly clobbered, played off the park.
00:03:26
Zak
i
00:03:39
Iain
And I don't really know why it wasn't more than four, to be fair. There was perfectly good goal disallowed. Dubravka was probably my man of the match because he made two or three excellent saves. And and you start thinking, well, ah ah if the the ball hadn't been running for us, we could have been doing a
00:03:54
Zak
All right, bye.
00:03:55
Iain
a nine nil defeat at home. Oh no, that's again. I'm sorry.
00:04:01
Zak
Dude, that was so far.
00:04:02
Iain
and
00:04:04
Zak
You're right, it's nice.
00:04:04
Iain
but even with a
00:04:06
Zak
it's It's not your fault. that that That is more that the media likes to remind every single person that Southampton lost 9-0 more than once in different seasons, which it does seem to be our thing.
00:04:17
Zak
We very much were sat at the Chelsea game him thinking it could be it could be another 9-0, and especially in that Spurs game where we we also were utterly humiliated, which did result in the sacking of Russell Martin.
00:04:30
Zak
But yeah, it's do you think that the
00:04:31
Iain
So, so we bounce back. We, I mean, you know, we would be expecting if we played you last weekend instead of Bournemouth, we would have come down expecting to steam roller you like our 4-0 win against Leicester, our 4-0 win against Ipswich. This is Southampton. It's, you know, that's, but then we were just so appalling, absolutely appalling, out New Castled by Bournemouth that You know, and have we reverted back to the start of the season where we couldn't string three passes together when we played away from home?
00:05:05
Iain
I don't know. It's quite exciting to see how it comes out. Because because we we're not expecting to steamroll you. I've watched i watched you somehow lose the game at Manchester United.
00:05:17
Iain
That all seemed to go wrong at 10 minutes left.
00:05:19
Zak
Yeah.
00:05:22
Iain
sort Tough times, I think. Tough times. I thought we were you were well worthy of being ahead going into the last phase of that game. And if it wasn't for some miracle performance by Diallo in the last 10 or 15 minutes, sam you'd have picked up an away win there and deserved it.
00:05:39
Iain
So, you know, I know it's a cliche to say there's no easy games in the premiership, but genuinely they there aren't. if If the wall is going to bounce a particular way.
00:05:49
Iain
Anyway, I've blathered too much.
00:05:51
Zak
like
00:05:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
right Are we likely to see a reaction from your from your squad?
00:05:52
Iain
Are you ready for an advert?
00:05:52
Zak
basically.
00:05:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like a my concern is that it would be like a wounded dog coming in that's just going to absolutely tear us apart. Is that the sort of reaction that your squad tends to see or is it more likely that they sort of dither into poor form?
00:06:07
Iain
Well, we we are hoping for that sort of reaction, Craig. The only comparison that we have when we where we went with big expectations and came down to, it crashing down to earth with such a massive bump that I can remember was when we played away at the end of the season where where we finished fourth. We had an away match at Aston Villa and Played off the park there. We ended up we lost three nil and that was in the middle of quite a good run that we were having. The game after the Aston Villa game a week later at home was was when we went five up after 20 minutes against Tottenham. So Eddie is capable of having a word with these players and getting to be refocus and move on from a bad result and show what they're really about in the next game. So that's what I'm hoping for Greg. But who knows?
00:07:05
Iain
We've been inconsistent for too long in these things and for me to be absolutely sure that's what will happen.
00:07:12
Zak
I think I'd love the idea that that we we would be that club that would be able to sort of, I don't know, force a reaction in the sense of you cut out guns blazing and then slip up against us.
00:07:23
Zak
But I think Greg knows I'm the bigger pessimist of our podcast. I am the one who felt every bit of pain of this season so far, as opposed to Greg who has much
00:07:29
Iain
ah
00:07:35
Zak
had us to finish 12th at the beginning of the podcast, had us to go on an unbeaten run over Christmas and has had to, unfortunately, want to make his kids endure the rowdier part of the Southampton Stadium for all of these defeats because apparently it helps them grow character.
00:07:53
Zak
yeah, I think it will be an interesting match either way. I'm worried that we're going to get absolutely trampsed, but we seem to be finding our feet a little bit, which is which is
00:08:01
Iain
Well, I've got a little bit of ah little bit of encouragement for you. Again, the team I see the current Southampton team most being compared to, forgive me for this, it's not me, it's the media, is the Derby team that was relegated with 11 points all those years ago.
00:08:16
Zak
and
00:08:18
Iain
Now, of those 11 points, Derby won at the baseball ground and then drew at St James's Park.
00:08:18
Zak
We don't even have that.
00:08:25
Iain
So they got four of their 11 points against Newcastle that season.
00:08:29
Zak
But that is potentially a positive and we'll little bit more of a chat about that when we come back after the break and we hear from our partners at Zincaster.
00:08:36

00:09:02
Zak
And we are back. So, yeah.
00:09:04
Iain
Well done. Well done for reading these adverts live, because we do that. So many people have just recorded it. and It's somebody they don't know. theres Yeah. Keep it real, guys.
00:09:13
Zak
Very much so. Yeah, we're we're back, we're talking a little bit about Southampton. What's your analysis of, you've said you've so you've watched us play a few times this season, how do you how do you feel as an outsider in an area with absolutely no, other than obviously the Ben Barrett and Diaz thing, which it doesn't matter, because I don't very much doubt he'll ever play for us again. That's all under the bridge now.
00:09:34
Iain
has he Has he gone out on loan or something or have he sold him?
00:09:35
Zak
of Yes, he's now he's now gone out on loan to Sheffield United with an option to buy, which I think is a preferable for all parties because he hasn't really done a lot for us since that game, if I'm totally honest. And he seems to be a lot happier at Sheffield United. The fans love him there. I think it's mutually beneficial if he does well and decide You know, it helps them score a few goals and they get promoted. I'm sure they'll happily part with the money for him. So it's so it's a win-win around. He's one of our flurry of our signings that were only around at this point six, seven months old that look to be on their way out of the door, which says a lot about our transfer business this year.
00:10:13
Iain
Well, yeah I would have thought it would have been a loan deal to Hollywood, actually, given his performance, when he stepped up to look closely at Fabian Shah. There you go.
00:10:24
Zak
a
00:10:24
Iain
What could we do? Shah was drawn into it. He was an idiot that day. m
00:10:28
Zak
It's fine, we got nothing from it.
00:10:31
Iain
a I haven't sat and watched loads of Southampton.
00:10:36
Zak
It's fat.
00:10:36
Iain
it so to It's isn't it? It's unfair, isn't it? Because Sky and the rest of them, they tend to target the teams up at the very top. So I've seen nearly, you know, I've seen nearly every Chelsea game. I've seen a lot of Man City, not loads of Southampton. But I did sit through Manu Southampton because I thought you might do something there, but you actually were much more confident, and knocked the ball around really well, tackled manfully.
00:11:06
Iain
I'm really impressed with the guy who's coming to Newcastle in the summer, and what's he called? Tyler Diddling.
00:11:13
Zak
you and every top six club 55 million is the price tag he did not that is right
00:11:18
Iain
well i think We feel like we've got a little bit of an edge there, though, because we were in when when he first moved and he went to Chelsea, I think, and he didn't like it at Chelsea. So he's come back to you, isn't it? But we saw him actually up in Newcastle in the u for the under 23s.
00:11:35
Iain
and we had a proper good chat with him then. And it was it was quite close when he was choosing where he was going to come. So we're hoping that we've been staying in touch with him, you know, sending him Christmas presents. is go away Get away for the two summer holidays and all that sort of thing. am So yeah, I was quite impressed with Southampton, particularly dibbling. He went off injured though. is is that Was that something that was going to last any length of time?
00:12:01
Zak
four to six weeks so we missed out on the last game and that's when we discovered so that is problematic for us and probably a benefit for you because
00:12:08
Iain
yeah
00:12:10
Zak
he won't be playing. However, we've had a couple of our players that have been outcasts under Russell Martin, under the new manager, have sort of had a bit of a revitalised career.
00:12:18
Iain
Yeah.
00:12:19
Zak
So Leslie Guchukwu, who's on loan from Chelsea, has come in quite a lot and he's doing he's he's playing a lot better and I think being played in the right way for his style of football.
00:12:30
Iain
He's about six foot eight, that fella, isn't he?
00:12:32
Zak
Now that's Paul Onewachu.
00:12:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah and Yeah Yeah
00:12:34
Iain
Oh, sorry.
00:12:34
Zak
Paul Onewachu's the guy who's, he's our Nigerian striker who we got, he kind of got brought in towards the end of Russell Martin's reign, mainly because people are like, you can't just keep playing the same striker week in week out.
00:12:45
Zak
His holdup play is very good, but he scored his first goal last week, which really did set the fan blade fan base a light and he dedicated it to the fans because somehow we're still selling out away ends, despite the fact that,
00:12:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Igleste comes in at a much shorter 6 foot 6.
00:13:00
Iain
Well, he's one of the few players, sorry, I'm talking over the top of you, Greg, because I couldn't hear you there.
00:13:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a much more manageable.
00:13:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's all right.
00:13:07
Iain
What were you saying?
00:13:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's all right. I was just saying that Leslie Ukechukwu comes in at a much more manageable 6 foot 6. So it's a ah much easier target to contend with.
00:13:15
Iain
Right.
00:13:18
Iain
The Nigerian guy is one of the few players in the Premier League that can come on and and tower over Dan Byrne at a corner. So that's a worry.
00:13:26
Zak
this is what so true
00:13:27
Iain
That is a worry.
00:13:28
Iain
and Stan Byrne has been our war, everything that comes in. I think we conceded one goal from a corner this season.
00:13:34
Zak
We've only scored, we've scored two now, I think.
00:13:35
Iain
two hundred
00:13:37
Zak
And ah ah potentially, I think one of those was Paul Onewachis last week and the week before was technically an own goal, which was Majesty United's own goal, which, yeah, we played we played very well, but we really did get put to the sword that sort of last quarter of an hour.
00:13:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't know.
00:13:52
Zak
And that's been a lot of the story of our season, to be perfectly honest. We've had a lot of games where we have played better than we look like we have and then because of our just lack of taking chances and it's just lack of finishing has resulted in we lose what would be very, very winnable games but it's been a bit of an odd an odd time for us but we we're kind of starting to see the seeds of something better. obviously we've We've somehow had a transfer in I mean a Danish midfielder a Gromback who I don't think we expected anyone to come in because Quite frankly who looks at Southampton right now in the position that we're in?
00:14:27
Zak
Potentially the lowest tally in the Premier League ever and goes I really fancy joining that So whether or not he makes his debut at the weekend, who knows?
00:14:33
Iain
I can change in two games, Zach. Don't worry, you can change in two games.
00:14:39
Zak
You got more optimism than me I'd love to I'd love to offer more but I think a lot of us have kind of accepted
00:14:47
Zak
accepted with down and almost the club seems to do that like when they've been talking about bringing in a new director of football and of basically wanting to take charge of the sort of footballing operations they've been very sort of well obviously this is now planning for next season you're like oh we've already accepted we're kind of on our way out but
00:15:03
Iain
Yeah.
00:15:03
Zak
Yeah, it's been tough, and I'm hoping that we'll put in the same level of fight we've put in the last few games, because realistically, they could have been a lot worse. United was, you know, ultimately, it was a loss, and it was really harsh, but we let ourselves come undone. The last goal was very, very preventable. And then obviously, our last game, we scored twice, which is far more than I expected us to do, and we came in against a really, really on-form forest team. So, yeah, it would be, I don't know, it would be an exciting one.
00:15:34
Zak
That's kind of where I'm at.
00:15:34
Iain
I think that should be encouraging. i think you've got to I think you've got to keep the faith until you're mathematically miles away. It's still doable. A record 36 points keeps you open. You've got what at the minute? Six.
00:15:48
Zak
So yeah, we've got to do some games.
00:15:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:15:50
Iain
and wait Ten wins.
00:15:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think mathematically we could still hit conference league.
00:15:54
Iain
You know, you've probably got 11 or 8 home games.
00:16:02
Zak
greg Greg still thinks we've got a European charge, which is extremely optimistic.
00:16:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:06
Zak
but
00:16:06
Iain
and Well, if you look listen back to our podcasts podcasts even a week ago yeah a week ago, we were discussing the likelihood of putting another nine straight wins together and actually being the only team to come out of the pack and challenge Liverpool for the champion for the the title. And we didn't half feel a little bit silly when we were doing our match review on Sunday night, I tell you.
00:16:32
Zak
but
00:16:32
Iain
Yeah, it's amazing how we get swept along.
00:16:33
Zak
yeah
00:16:34
Iain
I mean, it went we played really well for a month. That's it. Because we over we were repeating it now up until through to November. It's it's all confidence. Even we get to play.
00:16:44
Zak
it the I think think that's it.
00:16:44
Iain
my
00:16:46
Zak
Confidence is the big thing and that's the thing that's been been lacking in the team but where some of these players are now getting their chances that maybe there will be some more confidence and I'd i'd love, genuinely I'd love to see it. i I just can't get past just the general feeling of doom and probably spending a bit too much time on social media to be perfectly honest because I don't think anyone's happy with how the club's been and I think it's genuinely feeling the emotions of of of sort of promotion and like the playoff final and it was incredible mate and I got to go with my wife me and Greg hung out had a few beers it was fantastic
00:17:18
Zak
But so to be where we are now, it's just the sheer, it's really hard to so hold on to some hope. And I feel like, Greg, you you have much more of a desire because you pay a significantly large amount of money to see it, week in, week out.
00:17:32
Zak
So you need to cling to that hope a little bit. And our famous saying at this point is, it's the hope that kills you. But it's that's just unfortunately football.
00:17:39
Iain
Absolutely.
00:17:42
Zak
and We'll do a bit of a towards the end of the ramble after another word from our partners at the Global Sports Podcast Network.
00:17:50
Zak

00:18:08
Zak
So we're back. Obviously, this is the part that we all find difficult. I'll go to Greg first, which usually I'll give to our guests, but I just want to get the delusion out of the way first so the people who can be realistic can talk about what's the end of it. So what do you think we're going to end up being after? Come on, Greg.
00:18:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Look, we've had, although disappointing results, we had 82 minutes at United where we played well and 20 minutes at the end of, uh, of, uh, of the forest game where we played well and looked good. I feel like it's starting to come together. I feel like something's got to go away and unsurprisingly, I'm, I'm feeling like a home win, but I think, I think maybe two won.
00:18:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
because I don't think we'll keep a clean sheet because that's too optimistic.
00:19:00
Zak
It's incredibly consistent from either Greg to one. We can never keep a clean sheet but you always somehow think we're going to outscore an opponent and and I find it endearing every week mate.
00:19:13
Zak
I've gone past the point that I think it's utterly delusional and I just love to live in the world of your madness. So Ian, what do you think the school will be?
00:19:22
Iain
i Well, i I do think that, you know, i saw I saw a lot of the forest game as well, whether that was just highlights that I can't remember, but I thought you were looking not to come right back on that. m So I do think it's encouraging that the the last few last few games. If you've got one or two people being given a chance and that's coinciding with you looking a lot more of a team, you've got ah ah you You've brought Ramsdale.
00:19:50
Iain
He never thinks a really good goalkeeper and he's had a load more practice than he would have had when he was at Arsenal So he should be even better than he was when he was at Arsenal Well,
00:19:58
Zak
Oh, there was a there was a disallowed forest goal, which if you get a chance to watch back, have a look because you might disagree with that statement if you see it.
00:20:01
Iain
I know it wasn't wasn't his fault the the center half have got the pelters for the third goal against man United
00:20:08
Zak
It's a bit of a howler.
00:20:16
Iain
But when he did give that ball up, and Diallo ran through, I noticed Ramsdale had run off to the edge of the six-yard box to receive the ball back from him, so he just wasn't in the goal at all.
00:20:28
Zak
Yeah, that was an individual mistake.
00:20:29
Iain
It was a little bit of a comedy of errors, the whole thing, to be honest. m So I'm expecting quite a tough game. I'm hoping that Eddie blaming part of the the and performance last week on fatigue, because somehow,
00:20:46
Iain
We can't play Wolves at home and then Bournemouth at home and have a different team play against Bromley in the cup the week before has exhausted us. So I think it's rubbish, but yeah, fatigue shouldn't be a, it shouldn't have been an excuse for losing. It depends how they bounce back from that, as I say, they and it can go one of two ways. We could end up with a game like the first game of the season, which ends up really nasty and scrappy and and the home team wins 1-0. I can see that happening. However, any regular listeners to the Newcastle United Daily Podcast will know that every match I predict a 3-1 Newcastle win, and I've been right three times in the last four games. Why we'll go with that? We'll go with 3-1, and it always seems to be EZAC gets two and Gordon gets one, so why not?
00:21:45
Zak
checks out. feel like a a I would probably go with similar and maybe Paul and I'll actually finally get a home goal because that's the things that we as Southampton fans have to look forward to now isn't isn't the results, isn't really and anything other than the moments.
00:22:02
Zak
We have to enjoy the moments. So those 82 minutes that we were dominating United, we really enjoyed.
00:22:07
Zak
The last
00:22:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
If Ohanachi puts us 1-0 up, the roof's coming off of some areas, it's going to be an and it be an electric atmosphere.
00:22:15
Zak
very a very much fan favourite, but unfortunately, yeah, I just think think that as much as things are starting to come together, I still think that that there is a confidence problem, and I don't know if that can be resolved sooner rather than later. um don't know if they decide to play the new midfielder, maybe it will change things up, maybe it will get a bit more exciting. I just think at at the moment, where we're still we're still very fragile, and it does feel like a lot of the players have down-touched.
00:22:41
Zak
So I think that if I go with a 3-1 Newcastle win, anything else, I'll be pleasantly surprised. And I went with a 3-0 New... Nottingham Forest win, so the fact that we scored twice was a lovely surprise. But yeah, I'm kind of in full agreement and it's just, I can't see... I just can't see us ever winning again. I know that sounds really dramatic, but it genuinely sometimes feels like that. We're watching and... We all, as Saints fans, watched that game at the end of Forest and we knew, even with the extra 15 minutes of added time, it could have gone on for another 40, 50, 60 minutes. We just know that it was never going to be.
00:23:19
Zak
and this
00:23:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Speak for yourself. I was running around the house waiting for the equalizer.
00:23:23
Zak
i was I guess I'll speak to myself and many of the fans out there that are having a hard time. But again, maybe one day I'll get to live in in Cuckoo Land with you, Greg. I really genuinely hope I do.
00:23:33
Iain
Greg, you need to take Zach out for a beer. Get him a few beers, so he's going to sit and listen long enough for you to be able to.
00:23:42
Zak
yeah
00:23:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's it.
00:23:43
Iain
I like your positivity and I don't see, I don't think you've got false positivity, not the way you just said your new manager, new signing, new players coming into the team and and giving results.
00:23:54
Iain
I mean, you're not being slammed by anybody, have you recently?
00:23:59
Zak
I would say the Josie and Tottenham games.
00:23:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
or recently yeah but that was the previous manager it doesn't count
00:24:02
Zak
No, you're right. I guess...
00:24:05
Iain
Yeah. Yeah, it's a new dawn. I don't know why I'm trying to cheer you up. I'm hoping that that now eddie's Eddie's magic that put us five up against Tottenham after 21 minutes that season is is repeated in Southampton.
00:24:19
Iain
in there you know Or we'll just do what we did to it, which would be three over half time.
00:24:21
Zak
feel like it's just... I feel like it's...
00:24:24
Iain
So Man City didn't beat us on that, didn't they? It scored six against Ipswich, so it doesn't look nearly
00:24:28
Zak
Yeah, that was that was bizarre. it's I think it's just very much... I don't know, maybe maybe maybe my my mood will start to change. I think I'm i'm just...
00:24:38
Zak
I expect the worst and enjoy the best, I think is where I'm at. And the problem is is that the expecting the worst at the moment is is much easier than ever expecting the best.
00:24:42
Iain
she
00:24:46
Iain
I can now see now as I can see. I can see Greg phoning me on Monday. You were right Ian. Hey, that's the top of the world.
00:24:56
Zak
yes
00:24:56
Iain
Fancy. Wonder what we don't know.
00:24:59
Zak
but
00:24:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:24:59
Iain
I'll have wished it. I'll have wished it. Oh no.
00:25:02
Iain
Don't never let me talk to away fans again.
00:25:02
Zak
Oh!
00:25:06
Zak
but To be fair, this is what happens when Greg lets me on the other podcast as well.
00:25:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:25:12
Zak
It's i' always like, well, you're going to win. How do you want to win? Have you got out a form striker? So to be perfectly honest, it's it's quite nice to to maybe you have that positivity. And you're right. Greg's positivity, to be clear, is never is never a false.
00:25:24
Zak
Football was big and important in both of our lives. And, you know, if it wasn't for our mutual love, but we wouldn't have the podcast. So, you know, it's they i I think I'm just a bit more than maybe call it the January blues.
00:25:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:34
Zak
but It's been an absolute pleasure and I've had a whale of a time this evening. I hope you have as well.
00:25:40
Iain
but sofi yeah great to talk to you Like I said, I'm impressed. I'm impressed that you guys are doing everything that you need to do to have your your successful podcast. I think it's a really important part of a podcast for all the listeners out there want to hear the interaction between the two teams, because let's face it. footies But it's just training if you haven't got the two teams involved.
00:26:02
Iain
And that's what we all watch it for. And there's too many teams that we've not been able to have a crossover podcast with, because it just ignored our requests to come and talk to us, or our our volunteering that we're we're here to do one, and they haven't done it.
00:26:18
Iain
I don't know. Maybe they have better wildcard Wednesdays than we do. I don't want that.
00:26:24
Zak
But it's either way, it's been...
00:26:24
Iain
Still haven't got our head around meeting with Matt's mind. nice No.
00:26:29
Zak
We still struggle with that, our scheduling, me and Greg have been very, very busy.
00:26:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. We've got a game in the week. I guess we just do seven episodes.
00:26:37
Zak
so so We have. we've had it We've had a couple of periods. I'm pretty sure I did a 20-30 minute episode solo on Maya Yoshida's career back in October at one point when we were all busy and tied up.
00:26:49
Zak
for um um But it's been it's been absolutely fantastic.
00:26:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:26:51
Zak
We've had a good laugh. Obviously, see Daily Newcastle, if you're a Newcastle fan. Or if you're a Saints fan that's interested in Newcastle, you can find us on all of the social medias. We're on but be on on X, the everything app slash Twitter, whatever you call it nowadays.
00:27:05
Zak
We're on Instagram. We're on Blue Sky. We're on, where else are we Greg? I always forget at least one.
00:27:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
YouTube.
00:27:11
Zak
YouTube, TikTok, the the other one, the other big one. Where are all those places?
00:27:15
Iain
Can I ask before you disappear off, because I know all the Newcastle fans will be interested, how are you getting on with Ryan Fraser?
00:27:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:27:19
Zak
Sure.
00:27:23
Iain
Oh, silence speaks volumes!
00:27:23
Zak
who
00:27:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
disappeared.
00:27:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
He disappeared.
00:27:26
Zak
he He was very good at the championship. I'm very surprised we purchased him on the last day of transfer deadline day. I feel very much like he misses Russell Martin. Apparently he may be given an opportunity to impress at some point.
00:27:43
Zak
He's just got three people ahead of him. Other than that, as a guy for Saints fans, he is affectionately known as Wee Man and he played a big part of the last season.
00:27:45
Iain
Oh.
00:27:54
Zak
and Honestly, me and Greg kind of forget he's here.
00:27:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:28:01
Zak
That is genuinely our opinions at this point. yeah, any final words? or
00:28:07
Iain
No, well, you know, he was he was a free transfer by for us because he dang tools when he was when he was playing for Eddie Howe.
00:28:16
Zak
And it's, yeah, we were aware.
00:28:17
Iain
And but then he came back to work with Eddie Howe again. So, yeah, he was he was all right for us. But then, you know, he ended up training with the kids again because of not doing what we wanted them to do.
00:28:31
Iain
I think play him on the wrong wing. I don't really know what happened on that, but he fell in favour and we were glad to glad he found a home to be to be
00:28:43
Zak
He's still, he's still affectionately thought of, put it that way. It's not, I don't think that is the problem. I think it is just that the way that we are set up now and the fact that he was probably, well, really good mates of Adam Armstrong and obviously very, very good friends of sort of with Russell Martin and then the manager that brought him into the club that kind of put the faith in him has now gone.
00:29:05
Zak
And suddenly he's now trying to battle his way into a side where we have players that I think are just kind of above where he's at. And that's very much how our new manager puts it because he does not mince his words. He's incredibly blunt, former Yugoslavian man. So he he literally says his press conferences are done and dusted in about 10 minutes. And usually the answers are yes, no, yes, yes, no. And I know I don't think he's good enough. That's why we're not playing him.
00:29:33
Zak
uh very much as ah as opposed to lots of fluff around it so yeah he exactly
00:29:37
Iain
What you want though isn't honesty, it's what you want. What I was going to say was, with your new Nigerian guy whose name escapes me, of course it'll be etched on my memory forever when he scored a hat-trick on Saturday, you'll be able to recreate one of the iconic moments from Eddie's first half-season when he rescued us from probably a position as dire as you find yourselves in.
00:29:51
Zak
yes
00:30:01
Iain
when he took over from Steve Bruce, which was that they always made Dan Byrne walk out alongside Ryan Fraser. You can do it with your Nigerian centre forward now. It's great.
00:30:12
Zak
that would be That would be very, very exciting. Poor Otto is an extremely tall man. oh
00:30:19
Iain
ryan Ryan Fraser looked like one of the mascots every time he walked out.
00:30:24
Zak
Still does.
00:30:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
like Yeah.
00:30:25
Zak
Not next to wild lariots. It's been an absolute pleasure. in everybody Check out the Daily Newcastle. This has been the Daily Southampton. This has been a wonderful crossover episode. and We will see you all in the next one.
00:30:37
Iain
See you soon.
