Julian Contreras Jr: Hey there, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for sticking with us. This is Shut Off, Turn On. Episode 83. which is crazy because it's A lot of episodes, and it's not a lot of episodes based on how we've been doing things.
Julian Contreras Jr: But I'm your host, Julian on the West Coast.
Julian Contreras Jr: That guy over there laughing at me is...
Kendahl: This is... This is Kendall. I'm on the East Coast.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yes he is. And we'll we make an announcement. Towards the end of this. where it'll be kind of fun. but anyway so we're here we're on a monday afternoon which is super weird
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: but I mean, things have changed. You don't have school. There's a half day of school today. I have told you this, but I have recently...
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: Change jobs? so
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: I'm available on different days now and different hours. So we'll have to get used to that.
Kendahl: Yeah. Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: but I do want to say like
Kendahl: It's alright.
Julian Contreras Jr: Uh... I don't want to be downy. downy deborah on this one here but uh depression and stuff is super real if you have any uh issues with anything like that please talk to a loved one or Somebody medically trained.
Julian Contreras Jr: Preferably not chat GPT, but you know, whatever you got to do. Things got rough for a little bit.
Kendahl: Amen.
Julian Contreras Jr: And your boy wasn't himself, so. There was a lot of stuff going on
Julian Contreras Jr: but Anyway, how you been over there?
Kendahl: alright I'm i' You know, I've been doing pretty well. School has been... like Crazy because it's back in session for me.
Kendahl: I took on a new job as a teacher. And I'm still teaching the same way that I was before, just with different kids. and in a different classroom so
Kendahl: I have some friends that have told me, oh, so you're a real teacher now.
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah
Kendahl: Not that I wasn't a real teacher before, but... In any case, I'm good. I mean... Doing the same thing you're doing. I'm watching I've watched so many really good movies lately.
Kendahl: and finished a couple of really good books. And. Yeah, I mean, just... just going with the flow of things like being busy but keeping things real for myself too you know
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. All right. So. I mean, we're late September here. We had this episode planned for a while ago, so we have... notes here from when Uh,
Julian Contreras Jr: We were going to do Friday the 13th. we did a super deep dive into that trying to get ready for spook spooky season
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: and uh well i still have the notes so let's just jump right into that because the notes are already there So as I've told a few listeners.
Kendahl: Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: We were going to do a deep dive on 1980. Friday the 13th. The original.
Kendahl: Mm hmm. Right
Julian Contreras Jr: You had watched the regular version and I had watched the uncut version
Kendahl: Uh -huh
Julian Contreras Jr: And the only difference between those two is like. 24 or 30 seconds.
Kendahl: I was gonna say, I think it's like less than a minute, right?
Julian Contreras Jr: It's... Pretty dumb. Yeah. All it is is during one of the death scenes, there's a little bit more blood and the scene stays on there for a couple seconds later. not even worth really mentioning so if you have any qualms and watching either one they're the exact same pretty much don't even worry about it
Kendahl: All right.
Julian Contreras Jr: We have Kevin Bacon in this one. It's not his first role. I took took a look at that and see if it was his first very. movie It wasn't. He did a few other things just before that, but it was cool to see him super young.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: uh not knowing where his career was going to go and they just kind of offed him halfway through the movie
Kendahl: And kind of forgetting that he is even in it.
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah i mean he he does that opening scene
Kendahl: Like it's it's like a it's like a misnomer It's like one of those things like, you know, you forget. uh I mean... We don't forget. that drew barrymore is in screen but in some ways like i've I kind of forgot i forgot she was in Scream. until I saw the first one. I'm like, oh yeah, that's right. She's like in the first.
Kendahl: Hmm. Like she's the first thing.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, she's the first one who answers the phone
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. So. I did a deep dive on this one and I not only watched the first one, but then I ended up watching like the next. five because i bought the whole pack for like twelve dollars Oh.
Kendahl: Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: They're all pretty repetitive. Like no kidding. It got so boring. I'm not sure How these made it. A cult classic?
Julian Contreras Jr: Besides that it was Jason. And... Just watching them. I was like, this is the same kill. over and over again. And he doesn't even get the mask till like...
Julian Contreras Jr: Four? four or five if i'm remembering right i did this research so long ago
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: But I did want to mention a couple funny things that were going on that I noticed. So.
Kendahl: Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: If you were paying attention during the Monopoly scene where they were playing strip Monopoly.
Kendahl: Mm hmm. Only one of the better scenes.
Julian Contreras Jr: And I'm not sure if you could see this in the theater. But. When they rolled the dice, they... Didn't even care what they rolled. They just stuck to the script. the script.
Kendahl: They just went on with it.
Julian Contreras Jr: So... Yeah. So the dude rolls the dice and then she's like, oh, double fours or whatever she says. And I'm like, nope, that was clearly not double fours. So...
Julian Contreras Jr: I mean... Kudos to them for just rolling it. Maybe they didn't think anyone paid attention.
Kendahl: Right.
Julian Contreras Jr: But. Alright. It was worth the, I think it's an 86 % Rotten Tomatoes just because it was the very first one. And it was Jason's mom.
Julian Contreras Jr: She was doing all the killing. There were a few like plot holes, like. Why on earth if she... Like she doesn't have any powers, right? There's no powers at all.
Kendahl: Right.
Julian Contreras Jr: But she's throwing these. Let's call him 180. Pound. Gentlemen. Up into like. trees to where they fall out at the exact same moment and i understand jump scares Believe me I do.
Julian Contreras Jr: just pretty funny to get to the end of the movie and be like oh it's it's her and she's doing all this. I don't know. What did you think? Did you like it?
Kendahl: You know, it's it's funny. It's one of those... I remembered. I remember it vaguely as... Okay, so... A little tidbit of this movie. This was actually the very like, I think this was the very first rated R movie I ever saw.
Kendahl: as a child And I was not 13. I think I was like 10 when I saw it for the first time, maybe 11. So. In any case, we...
Kendahl: I was at my grandfather's house. And I remembered he had HBO. And like Showtime, Skinamax, you know, all nine yards, right?
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah
Kendahl: And. I remember it was a it was a late night during Halloween season. And my cousin was like. hey do we want to see what's on his it was my papa he's like do you want to see what's on papa's tv And I was like, sure.
Kendahl: And I remembered. like we were watching something and then this movie started And he's like, hey. This movie just started. Should we watch it? And I was like, sure. We didn't even know what it was. I had no clue. Right. I mean, there was just like nothing in my brain that had any understanding of what.
Kendahl: Jason, Friday the 13th, any of that was. So, I mean, think about this. This is like... We're we're talking like early 90s. And. I...
Kendahl: I don't remember much of the of like what I thought about the movie at that time, but... Like, looking back, I remember this being scary to me at the time that I saw it.
Kendahl: And now watching it, I'm like. This is just goofy.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. It's very goofy for sure.
Kendahl: I mean, it's... I don't know. i my My impression of of watching it again was... Obviously, this movie... You can see the influence Abundant.
Kendahl: for the movies that would come after it, right? I mean, everything about Crystal Lake Everything about Jason. All of the influence that would come into the horror genre.
Kendahl: post this movie is just You can't ignore it. But. At the same time, it's like... Uh... You look at the horror movies of today.
Kendahl: And you're like. Oh. Aum. Yeah, that's okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: exactly i don't remember like watching back and remembering as a kid i was like why was i scared of this It's so cheesy and campy.
Kendahl: Mm -hmm Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: So predictable.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: But, I mean, that's that's your imagination.
Kendahl: Like you saw everything coming.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. When you're younger, the imagination runs wild and everything else is like. way out of proportion scary and then now now i'm watching it as a grown older adult and i'm like well that's just That's just dumb.
Julian Contreras Jr: Bye.
Kendahl: But see it was it but the thing is is post this movie. I remember going camping with my grandfather And I was scared to death. being in the woods. Like...
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: I was like, no. i don't want to be out there because it's this movie scared the crap out of me as a kid
Julian Contreras Jr: As soon as the sun goes down, it's no it's no longer fun to camp.
Kendahl: So yeah, I mean...
Kendahl: No.
Julian Contreras Jr: it's been way too many movies And on that note, you text me about this and it's been on my notes here for a while.
Kendahl: No. Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: but Peacock is doing a Crystal Lake Series? And the whole thing comes out October 15th. Probably because they're...
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: so close to Halloween that... They don't want to do weekly.
Kendahl: Right.
Julian Contreras Jr: So the entire series will be out. And do you know who produces this series? Did you see that
Kendahl: Oh, no. harm
Julian Contreras Jr: A24.
Kendahl: Oh, yes, yes, yes. I did see that.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yep. And we all, all the listeners and. You know that A24 is one of my favorites. They're doing an eight episode drop. And it... Stars, I'm going to butcher this name, but it's Linda Cardellini.
Julian Contreras Jr: That's all I'm gonna say it
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: She's most recently been in DTF St. Louis, but her career is vast. freaks and geeks way, way back.
Kendahl: Oh I know.
Julian Contreras Jr: Done a lot, a lot of things. So I'm hoping that's really good. The trailer looks pretty good. And she is playing Jason's mom.
Kendahl: Yeah. and i mean And I read a little bit of a deep dive into this, and they're not going to ignore. What, Jason? you know plays in in obviously the the lore of crystal lake and then obviously the fight of the 13th, but
Julian Contreras Jr: Right.
Kendahl: They're gonna focus they're gonna try to put so much more focus around just her That. It's not gonna be you know, it's not gonna be a Jason series Like that was the one clear thing I was listening to an interview and the proof was like.
Julian Contreras Jr: Right.
Kendahl: this is This is not a series about Jason. This is a series about his mom.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. and i don't want to go too far from that but in response i would assume to peacock doing their own scary series Prime is doing a Carrie TV series that premieres all its episodes.
Julian Contreras Jr: on October 7th.
Kendahl: Yeah. That looks good.
Julian Contreras Jr: And I've seen this trailer.
Kendahl: And it's a modernization of it, right? So it's all based on like social media stuff.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yes, thank you
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yep, that's exactly what I was going to say. They modernized it so it's not. way way back
Kendahl: Yeah
Julian Contreras Jr: So that also looks really good. I am a sucker for Stephen King.
Kendahl: Right.
Julian Contreras Jr: We all know that I've seen. All the stuff that's good and bad.
Julian Contreras Jr: So I'm glad you had noticed that the Carrie TV series was out.
Kendahl: Yeah, yeah. Well, and the The thing is is, and I texted this to you the other day, I said I i broke my wife. So, because what you, so listeners, I think you've kind of gotten a little gist of this in the past, but you know, my wife is not much of.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, you did.
Kendahl: One, for some of the more graphic movies rated r movies we tend to sort of focus more into like family films and that just has to do with the fact that i've got five kids And, you know, we just.
Kendahl: we always kind of had that that element in our in our home well in the last couple years i've been i've been kind of bringing more movies to my wife's attention that i think she would enjoy that are We'll see.
Kendahl: More. graphic, I guess.
Julian Contreras Jr: Right.
Kendahl: and i I texted you, I said. All right. i I think I broke her because we watched Night of the Living Dead a couple years ago. She loved it. And then I got her into Dawn of the Dead.
Kendahl: And then we were going to start land of the dead.
Julian Contreras Jr: Right.
Kendahl: I... I will tell you right now, the series does not get better. the more that it goes into the series. and Land of the Dead was terrible.
Julian Contreras Jr: No, no, no. And I had to ask you, which Dawn of the Dead you watched? Because there's one in particular that is absolutely my favorite.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Kendahl: Oh, yeah. Yeah. The 2004 edition. It's freaking awesome. And then that this is another one of those films that I'm sitting there watching going, wait. Ty Burrell is in this?
Kendahl: And if you don't know who Ty Burrell is, but you watch Modern Family, he is Phil.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yep.
Kendahl: That plays in Modern Family.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yep.
Kendahl: And he plays... He plays... Uh... without using a four -letter word. Let's see.
Julian Contreras Jr: He's an a -hole.
Kendahl: Oh, it's still for it's still for it's a' still four word. A jerk.
Julian Contreras Jr: A jerk. Okay. Yeah.
Kendahl: But...
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: But anyway, so my point of that, my point of this little rant is that, you know, my I showed my wife the the series for Carrie and she even said that looks interesting. So, you know, we're.
Kendahl: We're kind of at that position of where we are. Bringing more and more of these. entertaining. uh genres into my wife's movie vernacular now she's starting to watch some of this stuff so yeah and and you know we were actually just having a conversation the other day
Kendahl: A little bit of of a hint drop of later on of like why I'm even interested in seeing the guys that are playing Jason or even interested in the the people that are playing in some of these horror films.
Kendahl: And. Spoiler alert, we're gonna talk about that later.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: And.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yes, we are
Kendahl: And so she was like, was it the same guy that played Jason in all the series? I was like, no. Actually, I said, well, it was yes in the very beginning for a while, but then it's no later on. And so like we were just we were talking about it.
Kendahl: And so I'm i'm i'm happy that i'm I'm finally bringing her into our world.
Julian Contreras Jr: Nice. I appreciate that so much. We could use more people.
Kendahl: So.
Julian Contreras Jr: So on a
Kendahl: Yeah, right.
Julian Contreras Jr: As we keep talking about scary movies. I do want to say 2026 is. a huge gift to the scary movie horror genre. I mean, we've had obsession.
Julian Contreras Jr: camp miasma, which was terrible. But Evil Dead Burn was really good. Hokum. Back Rooms was crazy.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: Send Help is in that horror category.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: Don't know why, but it is.
Kendahl: Yeah, yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: I did hear primate.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: was okay i didn't watch that one But undertone was out there. faces of death was out there bone temple ready or not to The upcoming Clayface looks okay, I'm hoping.
Kendahl: Mm hmm. Oh, so good A body horror genre pulling into the DCU? Yeah. Totally up for it.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. Werewolf. Comes out on Christmas Day. They're doing that one again.
Kendahl: Mmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: And the one that brought up this whole thing was Buddy. Did you watch Buddy?
Kendahl: Oh yeah. No, I didn't get a chance to see that yet.
Julian Contreras Jr: I'm pretty sure you would have texted me if you had.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: I went to this with. little to no knowledge besides that it was a Barney -esque character. I was told that he did nothing but kill kids the entire.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: movie And I was like, well, that's very Pennywise -ish. Because that was his demographic of... people to murder was children.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: so I go to the theater. I'm in there in the afternoon. It's like 1225 or something. uh the only seed in there Then I see a person walk in sits behind me Totally fine.
Julian Contreras Jr: About 10 minutes into this movie. kendall no joke and it's happened to me before i've told the story on here Dude walks in.
Kendahl: Oh, you told me this.
Julian Contreras Jr: With a backpack. keychains All over this thing. sits right next to me.
Kendahl: Hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: The whole theater. is available. And he sits right next to me. And... Talks to me. and talks to the screen the entire time.
Kendahl: Oh, geez.
Julian Contreras Jr: I... Was more scared of the gentleman to my left who was so... just nonchalant about talking to a stranger i'm like i'm gonna die he's gonna stab me I'm gonna die in this stupid movie.
Julian Contreras Jr: Uh, It...
Kendahl: I don't think our listeners are these people, but I'm just saying just. If if you were ever this person Shame on you. I'm just saying shame on you because this you and I have had this conversation of of the same thing. Like we one day my wife and I were at a movie.
Kendahl: Same thing, entire row, the entire row that we're sitting in. And this is a theater that you have to go. Boop! and You have to pick your seat. The entire row is open.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: entire freaking row. And there's it's not even a bunch of people in the theater. And these three dudes. Walk in late, mind you, late.
Julian Contreras Jr: Late.
Kendahl: The movie has already started.
Julian Contreras Jr: Always late.
Kendahl: It is already playing. They walk in late. And they sit there. But... Right next to us. And start chatting it up.
Kendahl: I was like... Are you freaking serious? Like, why? And I'll tell you, i I did have a little justice in the moment because then the attendee, because there's the thing on the door that says if you come in 15 minutes late.
Kendahl: after the movie has started. you will be removed. And not only did they come in 15 minutes late. But then they were sitting there chatting. we There was an attendee that came around. and like stood up in front or like squatted in front of them so they're not blocking the screen. And I couldn't hear what they were saying. But I figured out what they were saying because the guy goes.
Kendahl: For real? like really loud.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: And I looked at my wife and I go. They're getting kicked out. And sure enough. Two seconds later... they get they get escorted out of the theater and i was like i wanted to clap But we're in the middle of the movie, so we didn't.
Kendahl: but i was But I'm like, that's a moment.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: like I wished that for you, because that's... Don't be that person. like
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: You could have picked any seats.
Julian Contreras Jr: Not only that. He could have picked any seat, yes. But he came in, the door was on the right. I was right in the middle because I like to sit right in the middle of the screen, you know? Immerse yourself.
Kendahl: Yep.
Julian Contreras Jr: He comes in.
Kendahl: Yep.
Julian Contreras Jr: Comes down my aisle and I'm like, okay, he's going to stop obviously before he gets to me.
Kendahl: Yep.
Julian Contreras Jr: No, he doesn't stop and he... Stands right next to me he goes Oh, I'm. I'm just on the other side So now I have to put my seat down. My feet gotta come down and this chair's gotta make its little farty noise.
Kendahl: Hmm. yeah
Julian Contreras Jr: and get in Ehhh... and he goes past And I'm like, are you, this cannot be happening.
Kendahl: That's so stupid.
Julian Contreras Jr: Anyway, I get back to the movie buddy. it wast It was an okay movie. Uh... What's his name? Jordan? It's not Jordan Peele. Kenan Michael Key.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: That is the name. Yeah, he's the one who plays Buddy.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: So it's...
Kendahl: Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: cool to hear his voice in that character and it's a way whacked out movie like
Kendahl: yeah
Julian Contreras Jr: It's It's cool because I've never seen it before.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: The way they accomplish this movie.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: But then the ending just leaves you like Okay, well now what? Are you going to make a second one that explains more or?
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: i don't know it's weird
Kendahl: Backstory. Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: definitely see it hopefully it comes out streaming on uh
Kendahl: Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: At least to rent or a streamer by Halloween Because it's it's a fun movie.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: It's fun.
Kendahl: Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: the The children deaths in the movie are off screen. And one of them is like, he just eats him. Kind of like.
Kendahl: Mm.
Julian Contreras Jr: What, the Philly Fanatic?
Kendahl: Oh, I gotcha.
Julian Contreras Jr: Is that the mascot?
Kendahl: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. yeah Yep.
Julian Contreras Jr: It might be the finesse. I don't know. One of them does that.
Kendahl: yeah yeah Yeah, I know what you're talking about.
Julian Contreras Jr: All right. So that was buddy in theaters. and This is how long ago this episode is. My son and I, we went to go see the 25th anniversary of Fast and Furious in theaters.
Kendahl: Oh okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yes. absolutely loved it and The bonus. for me during that movie was it was the exact same theater I saw 25 years ago.
Julian Contreras Jr: Not the same room and the screen.
Kendahl: Oh that's awesome.
Julian Contreras Jr: Just the theater.
Kendahl: That's good. I got you. That's cool though
Julian Contreras Jr: Some people were telling me that they had an upgraded version of it. It was it was cool to see it in theater 4K with the cool sound. I was like, that's... That's not what I got. I got the 2001 version.
Julian Contreras Jr: which is fine i love it so much it was a lot of fun i i saw a few of my friends walk in Because my son and I got together early.
Kendahl: But I mean... Right.
Julian Contreras Jr: And I was like, I don't know how many people are actually going to come see this. But then right before it started. a whole group of my friends walked in and i was like raising my hand because like what's up it was It was a lot of fun.
Kendahl: yeah
Julian Contreras Jr: It's cool to see those movies come back in for their anniversaries.
Kendahl: What are you saying? You owe me an at eight -second car?
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: yeah Amen.
Julian Contreras Jr: And...
Kendahl: Well, I mean, okay, so... Again going to it's been a while. So a movie that I saw in theaters. uh that is now i Mostly out. I don't even think it's in there. was uh at the end of Oak Street.
Julian Contreras Jr: oh okay and i still haven't seen this one yet
Kendahl: So. Okay, so this is Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor. I can be honest with you. This was this was just a fun movie to see.
Kendahl: And. I'm not going to say... Something, Okay, so the funny thing is there is something that happens in this movie and you're like...
Kendahl: No effing way did that happen. No. like why why would they do that to you why would they do that in this movie that doesn't make sense it doesn't even follow through with everything And. uh it It really throws you off for the last.
Kendahl: Part of the movie. But it makes sense in the last like. Couple of minutes. Right?
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.
Kendahl: But. In this movie, you get see you get to see dinosaurs. frolicking in the bedroom. It's awesome.
Julian Contreras Jr: What?
Kendahl: There.
Julian Contreras Jr: what okay
Kendahl: just going at each other making dinosaur noises and it's all there you get to watch dinosaurs poop
Julian Contreras Jr: Going full Mongo?
Kendahl: It's there. Ouch. Full, whole thing. It's it's great. But it...
Julian Contreras Jr: Anybody that reads dungeon crawler carl you get that Reference.
Kendahl: But, no, I mean, this is this is honestly a great movie. Like, you were invested in this family. so the premise of this film is this family in it they they It's 80s. you know, middle America.
Kendahl: Dad's trying to figure out how to pay for the bills. Wife is kind of a... under underappreciated writer And. their life in suburbia, and then all of a sudden it all gets flipped on its head when they get transported back in time.
Kendahl: to the dinosaurs. And you're like, oh, okay. this That seems real. But they they really do kind of immerse you into it. And you're like, okay, yeah I can believe this for a minute. And it's kind of cool. And then the whole movie is about their surviving. Just everything that's happening.
Kendahl: And. Then you kind of find out why it's happening, and that's kind of neat. And. im
Kendahl: it's just it's really crazy because i mean there are scenes that are so visceral real and they make these dinosaurs very real the dinosaurs have feathers dinosaurs that in previous years had not had feathers they had scales now they're figuring out that oh like these dinosaurs actually probably look closer to birds and so they're they they use these dinosaurs are extremely scientifically accurate but just the rendering them is absolutely cool being chased by some of these dinosaurs you're just like
Kendahl: Okay, no, turn right. No, go. Get out of there. You know, you're you're literally like. trying to help them out kind of thought process it's cool it's a fun movie to watch so I mean...
Kendahl: I don't. If it's playing anywhere near you at some like dollar theater, go see it. but If it's not, rent it. It'll be worth it. It's definitely worth the watch. I loved it. Anne Hathaway is great. This is just pre -pregnancy.
Kendahl: Ewan McGregor plays this guy that you're like, i don't know i don't like his character but then you really start to like his character and then it Kind of. Ticks you off. later on and it just i don't want to give anything away it's great it's good
Julian Contreras Jr: Perfect. Yeah.
Kendahl: And it's it's it's just a fun action movie. And so, yeah, definitely. Go see it. Go watch it. or rent it. in your house But okay, so you.
Julian Contreras Jr: I do like that our movie reviews, like... We're not full of spoilers. For everyone out there, you can listen to us rant about the movie, but we're not going to give too much away. And I know sometimes that's that's what you want.
Kendahl: No.
Julian Contreras Jr: And if that's what you really want, like. what you really really want Well... Spice Girls it up here. We could totally do that, but we try not to because we want you to listen to our show and then go out and make your own opinion on the movie.
Julian Contreras Jr: If you agree with us, that's great.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: I don't want to give you the whole plot point, the ending and my thoughts all at the same time. And then you're like. Well, I guess there's... There's no need. and to watch this movie now.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: That's not our goal. is to have you not watch something.
Kendahl: I mean, and I feel like we've done spoilers in the past.
Julian Contreras Jr: And I hope you all understand what we're doing.
Kendahl: Well, and I feel like we've done spoilers in the past
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, we have.
Kendahl: And it's because, hey, guess what? Either one. If you're living under a rock and you don't know the spoiler, sorry. But...
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: Then on the other end, I think we've also done it for movies where the spoiler is really necessary to tell you either one. how insanely bad this movie is or the reason why it's gaining the traction that it is.
Kendahl: and so but you know we typically we typically let you know that if that happens And so. Spoiler alert. the zombie movies. They die.
Julian Contreras Jr: They're already dead Actually.
Kendahl: Almost everybody dies.
Julian Contreras Jr: ay So in my notes here, I have upcoming movie Resident Evil looks awesome.
Julian Contreras Jr: So that's how long ago I just saw this movie on Saturday.
Kendahl: oh Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: I went with my friends. We had D -Box seats. which was my friend Casey's idea. And he had no idea what it was. So kudos to Casey for making that decision.
Kendahl: Mm -hmm
Julian Contreras Jr: It was so much fun, Kendall. i It knew what it was.
Kendahl: Good.
Julian Contreras Jr: It had video game references. It stuck to it. It wasn't serious. It it had some jump scares. It was just so much fun. Up until the very end.
Julian Contreras Jr: If you... want to go see it i highly recommend going seeing resident evil it was so much fun the pov
Kendahl: Oh really?
Julian Contreras Jr: Like it goes into the gun view. Yeah.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: like do Yeah, Doom tried it. Way back when.
Kendahl: Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: And it was like that.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: for some scenes.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: there's one scene where he,
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: If you've played Resident Evil... You're going to get this reference if you haven't. Just watch for it in the movie. He opens up one of the doors. And there's a desk with a typewriter on it.
Kendahl: Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: And I wanted to... and it's it's the exact same style typewriter kendall i was like oh he just hit a save point
Kendahl: yeah yeah
Kendahl: that was that was That was my... I remember PS2. When I had a PS2 way back in the day, this was one of the first games that I played. Or no, it was a PS1. No, it was a PS1.
Kendahl: Aging myself. Dang it. So it was a ps1 Resident Evil was one of the first games I played on my ps1 and I remember that that was like
Julian Contreras Jr: No, you're fine.
Kendahl: oh that's cool i also heard that there's a there's a like med kit reference
Julian Contreras Jr: I don't know if it's a med kit. But he does walk past a car with a... green tree in it. I don't know if that was on purpose.
Kendahl: Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: It didn't look like the video game one because not a lot of plants do.
Kendahl: Hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: look like that.
Kendahl: Mm hmm. Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: i I purposely watched for a red one. There was no red one.
Kendahl: Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: So... When I saw the the tree in the car, I was like, oh, that's got to be what they're trying to get to. And the shotgun shells he finds.
Kendahl: hu
Julian Contreras Jr: They're the green box.
Kendahl: Okay. Alright, alright.
Julian Contreras Jr: So it's super fun. I love it. The banter. Cause he's alone for most of it. So. during somebody when they're alone like cast away a lot of it's in the quiet right up until he starts talking to Wilson.
Julian Contreras Jr: Not this guy. This guy gets mad at everything and he just starts mumbling under his breath and swearing and cursing and getting mad at his phone. uh he gets mad at himself for being
Kendahl: Remind me, who's the director?
Julian Contreras Jr: Austin. Oh, the director?
Kendahl: Yeah
Julian Contreras Jr: I don't know. You'll have to look that one up. I'm sorry
Kendahl: Give me two seconds. I remember
Julian Contreras Jr: But I did read that he does not want to do it again. Because the fans. jumped all over him for not being video game accurate.
Kendahl: Well, he he specifically said that he was not He had not watched. the movies prior. And so.
Julian Contreras Jr: Well, that has probably worked. best for him because I haven't been excited and this much fun for Resident Evil movies since the very first one when I was a kid and it's Mila Jovovich.
Kendahl: right. Right?
Kendahl: So it's... Okay, so this it's Zack Crager. So if you if you know that name, it's because he did Barbarian and Weapons.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay. Yeah.
Kendahl: so
Julian Contreras Jr: And very good stylized stuff. I liked it a lot.
Kendahl: Yeah. Yeah. But yeah, that's actually a movie that's on my list.
Julian Contreras Jr: All right.
Kendahl: Maybe Friday. Maybe Friday.
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah please go see it you won't regret it it's a lot of fun you'll laugh at a lot of things like out loud not even like a hee hee but like a a Belly laugh.
Kendahl: Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: Because it's that funny. uh any more theater stories because i want get to get to some streamers that are out there
Kendahl: Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: That are probably already over already.
Kendahl: Oh. I mean, no No, I think we're good. I mean, i did I went and saw a couple other movies that... we're just like anniversary movies. Nothing nothing too great. and like Crazy, but it was good. it was I mean, honestly, we we did.
Kendahl: Fun thing we did was we did a movie night. at home And we watched Hubie Halloween. The only reason I want to bring this up is because.
Julian Contreras Jr: Oh nice.
Kendahl: my My wife. turns around and tells me oh yeah we did this as a church movie with a bunch of girls and i went What? She's like, yeah, we did this a couple years ago. And I went...
Kendahl: you did this movie remember people if you've not seen if you if you've not seen hubie have a halloween the grandma comes out in the most... obscurely terrible.
Kendahl: very, very inappropriate shirts for like... teenage girls because like one of them
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: One of them says... I go kayaking because it gets me wet.
Julian Contreras Jr: but
Kendahl: I mean...
Julian Contreras Jr: i mean maybe they just overlooked it and they thought she was an outdoorsy person
Kendahl: What? Oh. i I don't know. But that was that that whole time we're watching this movie, she tells me this at the beginning of the movie. Oh yeah, have we watched this with with the church group with a bunch of girls.
Kendahl: And I was like, Really? Because I remember this movie not being that much like church appropriate. And she's like, oh, yeah. And the whole time, every time there's like a joke joke about boner donor, I looked at her and I said. Mm hmm.
Kendahl: Mm hmm. Okay. Like 11, 12, 13 -year -old girls watch this movie with her.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.
Kendahl: i I'm laughing.
Julian Contreras Jr: Nice.
Kendahl: The whole time, I'm just laughing. Anyway.
Julian Contreras Jr: Awesome.
Kendahl: Alright, let's get to streaming.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay, so... Once again, these notes are forever old. So I started Reacher season four.
Kendahl: Oh did you finish that?
Julian Contreras Jr: And it's sent. Finished it. i finished it i love that season it's by far my most favorite season
Kendahl: Oh, jeez.
Julian Contreras Jr: I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
Kendahl: Absolutely best season. The ending, the the end episode, good gosh.
Julian Contreras Jr: I had.
Kendahl: I don't think that man could take any more torture at the end and still survive.
Julian Contreras Jr: I honestly thought he was gonna die. I was like oh this is it.
Kendahl: I did too.
Julian Contreras Jr: This is how they're going to end it. There's no more Reacher.
Kendahl: It...
Julian Contreras Jr: But he found a way.
Kendahl: Well, and then Alan.
Julian Contreras Jr: He found a way.
Kendahl: What's that?
Julian Contreras Jr: He found a way to live. so
Kendahl: Well, okay, so Alan Richardson, he like he actually bulked up even more for this season. The... The dude is just... already insanely massive.
Kendahl: And as a guy.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: I'd pay 20 bucks to grab it. Like I'm just. Dude, just... i Don't know it's Just a big dude. Crazy. And to bulk up even more for this season, it shows...
Kendahl: And I think they even throw some puns in there for it because even I think one of the, one of the girls, when he's like changing, she's like, good gosh.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. So that one was really good.
Kendahl: Peace.
Julian Contreras Jr: I love that season. And then... It's not on my notes here, but I have started watching Neely. In the world of Jack Reacher.
Kendahl: Yeah, yeah Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Neely has her own show.
Kendahl: i we
Julian Contreras Jr: I have one episode left and it.
Kendahl: The first episode is great.
Julian Contreras Jr: yeah the first episode's good the second episode was kind of snoozy
Kendahl: Wait, wait, wait. you already You already watched almost all of them?
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, I have one left to go I have eight.
Kendahl: Okay. Yeah, it's good. It's good.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. So I'll finish that one today. I'll get back to you. And then one that I started watching and then it kind of took a left turn, but then I think it's back on track. It lost a lot of viewers, but Lanterns on HBO.
Julian Contreras Jr: Not a huge Green Lantern fan, but...
Kendahl: Oh. I heard about that.
Julian Contreras Jr: It's It's good. I liken it.
Kendahl: I heard it was good.
Julian Contreras Jr: right uh i think that's all the the streaming stuff i don't want to kind of keep this episode short ish just so our computers don't crash here. But.
Kendahl: Okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: I do want to say that I... Okay. My wife and I we went to go see Matchbox 20 the other night
Kendahl: Oh, okay.
Julian Contreras Jr: Oh my goodness, Kendall, if... I have never left a concert feeling more... Happy and fulfilled with my purchase, I guess not even my purchase but just as a person Taking you back to the 90s.
Kendahl: I gotcha.
Julian Contreras Jr: It just made The whole stadium was there for one purpose, and so... was the band. uh, seeing Rob Thomas in person for the very first time. And having done my research and re -listen to all this music and picking a new favorite song and not just push.
Julian Contreras Jr: or 3 a .m.
Kendahl: yeah
Julian Contreras Jr: but she's so mean.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: That song. I love to. to sing in my car. And. my goodness kendall i'm gonna tell you as soon as i heard those first couple beats because usually when you Side note.
Julian Contreras Jr: If you have a favorite song from a band and you like to sing it, chances are they're not going to do it because it's not one of the popular ones.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: Am I wrong? Am I wrong? Hollywood and Dead does it to me all the time.
Kendahl: No.
Julian Contreras Jr: I have some... Side B covers that I love a lot. They're not covers.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: Sorry, I used the wrong terminology.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: but they don't play those in concert.
Kendahl: Yeah. Well, like some of my favorite Nickelback. Songs are not are not the ones I mean, it's it's not typically the ones that you hear replayed all the time.
Kendahl: And so I know if I ever went to one of their concerts.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. And.
Kendahl: the likeliness of me hearing some of those songs. Are probably not going to come up
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah. And some of those bigger bands that have a ton of hits like that, when they do like a... A mashup. where they sing four of them real quick and they mix them all together. where they choose one word to switch the song.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: absolutely love that i mean yeah you don't get the full song
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: But once you realize what they're singing and you just like. It clicks. And you're like, oh my goodness, this is my favorite part.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: but
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Damn it, Kendall. This concert was so much fun. Like...
Kendahl: That's cool. I mean, Matchbox 20 was such a big thing for like those latter high school or early like.
Julian Contreras Jr: Everyone was there.
Kendahl: you know post high school years for sure.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, and i I never saw them when they were super popular and big. I did i must not have gone to concerts like that. but
Kendahl: That's cool.
Julian Contreras Jr: When Rob Thomas came out and he's like, yo. for the next hour and a half. I mean, he does what... we say he's like Everything. outside of this arena does not exist.
Julian Contreras Jr: Right now we are here.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: We are here for this. We are here together to enjoy this. And it doesn't matter.
Kendahl: That's cool.
Julian Contreras Jr: like Anything outside. Like, honestly, if. Some bands like to stay political and they say this and they say that. I absolutely. do not like that because it segregates.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: People.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: I don't vote certain ways and other people don't.
Kendahl: I can be honest my
Julian Contreras Jr: Like, it don't hold that against us why we're trying to enjoy.
Kendahl: What?
Julian Contreras Jr: an hour and a half of old music that makes us feel good about when we didn't have to care about that.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: In 1990, I didn't care about anything.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: I saw it on the news. But I wasn't. out there i wanted to live in my own little world and just have fun with my friends And that's exactly what this night represented.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Kendahl: That's cool. My favorite Rob Thomas song, honestly, is his collab with Santana.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yes, that's a good one.
Kendahl: like that was
Julian Contreras Jr: He did not do that one. That's it.
Kendahl: Nah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Not surprising, but...
Kendahl: so but i mean But the thing was, is in many ways, his name... I mean, okay, so if you were big into Matchbox 20, you knew who Rob Thomas was. But I feel like people that didn't.
Kendahl: Follow. Matchbox 20. in their heyday. they They found out who Rob Thomas was. because of Santana.
Julian Contreras Jr: Right. And so I had actually text a friend because this is how much research I did not do before that.
Kendahl: so
Julian Contreras Jr: is I thought Rob Thomas had left Matchbox 20 and done his own thing. I did not realize that he was still there and his solo thing was sideways.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: so when i realized that he was actually in the band still i was like oh my goodness this is awesome And that.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: that's how ignorant i am i guess just for not knowing that but If you get the chance, Kendall, if they're touring. Please go. You'll feel so good.
Kendahl: Well, I just found out Metallica is actually...
Julian Contreras Jr: It was. Darn near euphoric.
Kendahl: Metallica is actually doing a stop. uh, right near my house at a really small venue, just North of me. And I, I, I just happened to see an article the other day about it. And ironically, my wife tells me she, cause it's, it's, it's where she in the town that she works. She's like, Hey, I do. you Do you know that metallica's coming to town and they're gonna do it at this one venue and i was like what That's a small venue.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: I mean, this is like... When I say small venue, I mean... It might it might fit 200 people if you put them in the rafters. like small. Small.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: And so she's like, do you think we should get tickets for it?
Julian Contreras Jr: Uh...
Kendahl: And I was like, that'd be awesome.
Julian Contreras Jr: Do you know who's opening for them?
Kendahl: No.
Julian Contreras Jr: If it's the same tour.
Kendahl: No, I'd have to look.
Julian Contreras Jr: that I think you're talking about next year. It is Avatar and Limp Bizkit.
Julian Contreras Jr: So...
Kendahl: It's not? No. not them there it's a
Julian Contreras Jr: It's not that one?
Kendahl: No, it's it's a weird stop. I'll have to look it up. I'll i'll text you about it. But anyway, it was just it was like it was crazy that that that that popped up.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay.
Kendahl: and so We were talking about maybe going to see that. That'd be cool.
Julian Contreras Jr: Okay. All right, that's all the notes we have.
Kendahl: So.
Julian Contreras Jr: Right now, we're going to jump into what we've been alluding to this whole time about scary movie stuff. And big news.
Kendahl: Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: I... I'm going out to the East Coast. Very soon, actually. Very, very soon.
Kendahl: to hang out with this guy.
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah, so... Prepare yourself, Baltimore, because you're going to have the shutoff turn on crew in your house.
Kendahl: I know, right? Uh...
Julian Contreras Jr: Yeah.
Kendahl: Yeah, so we we found out about a... A monster as a monster mania, right?
Julian Contreras Jr: Correct yep.
Kendahl: Yeah, up in Baltimore. and Baltimore's just a couple hours north of me. And so we decided that we were going to make it a... Shut off, turn on. guys weekend So...
Julian Contreras Jr: Yep. Mainly, we're going to go see...
Kendahl: It's going to be fun.
Julian Contreras Jr: A few different stars. They're still adding people, but...

Julian Contreras Jr: I was talking about the video that she had sent as a huge favor.
Kendahl: okay
Julian Contreras Jr: so That'll be fun to talk to her.
Kendahl: Mm hmm.
Julian Contreras Jr: and about that I'm probably going to meet. David Howard Thornton again. That's probably just going to happen.
Kendahl: but
Julian Contreras Jr: but Another one they just announced was The Crypt Keeper. The voice. Firm Tales from the Crypt.
Kendahl: Yeah. Yeah.
Julian Contreras Jr: Crypt whatever you want to say
Kendahl: I saw that. Yeah, Tales from the Crypt.
