Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Southampton part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Greg Elliott and all as always always today joined by my good friend and wonderful co-host Zach Inger Finch.
00:00:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
How you doing bud? You alright?
00:00:31
Zak
I've a heck load of tech problems, Greg, and they've ruined my life, but it doesn't matter because we're here to talk about football. So yeah, I'm all right.
00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's it. yeah And look, while the tech may be bad, the football's been good. or the risk
00:00:44
Zak
that's That's true.
00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
The results have been good. Let's not stretch ourselves too far into the realms of possibility. There was still only one highlight from that.
00:00:51
Zak
I don't know, three goals in a game, mate. That's like the most we've seen in forever.
00:00:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh yeah, for sure. It's definitely better. I just don't know if good is is necessarily there. There was still only one highlight from that entire second half. Like, just... yeah
00:01:07
Zak
Oh, yeah, you're right.
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't want to like I'm all for the positivity, but I don't want to like push it too far. you know We've got to stick in at least close to the realm of realism. But anyway, let's wind it backwards a bit today, and let's have a talk about Will Still.
00:01:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, he did an interview with DAZN Belgium this weekend, and despite neither of us speaking... French, German or Belgian whatever this interview was conducted in and being able to source it properly there's there's some bits that some smarter people than us have translated that we can look at and reflect on and and I guess we'll we'll take it further from that and talk about if if he really was the problem, right?
00:01:55
Zak
Yeah, I guess so.
00:01:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
but So he's come out and said that he feels like he didn't do enough to to to do it. He says it's the first time he's been fired, so it's it's new to him. He didn't do well enough.
00:02:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know that's how it works in the world of football, and you pay the price quickly. So, mean,
00:02:20
Zak
It's not wrong.
00:02:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
it was the right time, right? Like, I don't think we can accuse the board of acting too hastily, can we, once the the atmosphere goes at the ground like that?
00:02:32
Zak
I think you're right. I would have liked have seen what he'd have done the rest of the week. And like, you know, if we got those two wins, would he still be in charge?
00:02:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. Hmm.
00:02:40
Zak
However, the personnel changes that were made, would he have made them that resulted in the wins? And that's that's where it comes down to, right? Is that, you know, who is he willing to trust and who wasn't he?
00:02:51
Zak
You know, I don't think there was anything potentially going on behind the scenes, but ultimately, you know, we've had an interim manager pick up as many wins as him. in the league and that's that's yeah that's that's the reality of the situation you know we we both were quite excited when he came in uh we both saw him as probably one of the top candidates that could get the job uh ironically you know some of the other ones that were in the running were liam manning who has also just been fired by norwich so you know is what it is it's it's difficult because you know i think we all wanted him to succeed i think that
00:03:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:03:27
Zak
a lot people didn't seem to really be on board from day one. They didn't think that he had the right aptitude or the right personality to be a head coach. Same with just not to be a head coach as such, but to be a head coach of Southampton and and meet the expectations.
00:03:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:03:44
Zak
And I think, you know, he's he was worth a go. I think that he'll probably go on to do better things. I think that, he was probably naive in some decisions, but some of these games were definitely on the players' heads, right?
00:03:56
Zak
But then there were some that were on him. Like, he's going to go down in history, as you pointed out, as the manager that brought off our best player, replaced him with Jack Stephens in midfield and subsequently lost the game in a horrific way.
00:04:08
Zak
And that's sad because that isn't what I think he wants his legacy to be and probably shouldn't be.
00:04:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. Hmm.
00:04:13
Zak
But that's the reality of the situation. I don't think he was... fully backed, but i also don't know how vocal he was about the transfers, right?
00:04:23
Zak
Being under sports. And you've got wonder they would only potentially have accepted someone into that job but that's willing to work in this way. Didn't have his own backroom staff. His backroom staff is made up of people hired by the club. and And we've talked about how potentially damaging the lack of synergy was early on, right?
00:04:41
Zak
And how potentially could be in the future. But You know, that there has to be questions raised why all of a sudden, but two games in a row, the players are putting performances when he's not been here.
00:04:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:04:54
Zak
And I don't know answers necessarily to that question.
00:04:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:04:58
Zak
But yeah, I think it's, you're right, it was the it was the right time because, you know, arguably we're looking at another six points on the board because of it. Whereas if not, could have been another zero.
00:05:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's interesting, right? Because it could come down to something as basic as literally just a, not even like a conscious thing, but just, I mean, he clearly wasn't able to motivate the players in the right way. And, and you know, whether that is, was a conscious decision or just not doing the right things to GM up that suddenly, I guess, Tonda is right. We've seen,
00:05:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, I'm sure we'll touch on it as as time goes on, but you've seen this quote come out about his first interaction with the team where he chose to stand up and not say any words, but just go around and forcibly look them in the eyes before just telling them, I want hungry eyes.
00:05:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like, I don't see Will Steele doing that.
00:05:55
Zak
Yeah, like I don't know how true that is, but because if it is, it's kind of insane. It's like a...
00:06:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, but it's a big personality thing. Like, Will Steele's not doing in that. Like, it's... So is it just is it just that it's different motivation and and you know it's something that's clicked? you know It might not have been a conscious decision not to play for Will still, but there's definitely something to be said for he just didn't quite get you fired up in the right kind of way.
00:06:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't know. It's it's such a baffling one to me. like We talk a lot about how maybe your motivation to play 110% should be the thousands of pounds you get paid a week.
00:06:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, I mean, just...
00:06:38
Zak
Well, if you're going to get paid it regardless by the sounds of it, mate, why would it matter?
00:06:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exactly, right? Because now, if you look at Will Steele, he's... What was the quote? Let's let's find it quickly. Many clubs have called me, but i want to take the time to do things right.
00:06:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
In football, we don't often have the time to take the time. I've done wonderful thing over the past few years, but they've demanded a lot of energy from me We're take the time to do things right for the next step and join my family.
00:07:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Which, you know, is fair enough. I know that he moved back to England to be closer with his wife and now he gets to, you know, spend that extra time with her. But, I mean, that's made much much easier by the compensation package that undoubtedly came as part of this, right? It's just... That's the problem. if if If you cut don't have the ability to take that away as a motivating factor, you have to find something else to, you know...
00:07:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
gee, these players up, apparently, and something stirred it within them, right? And it wasn't, you know.
00:07:34
Zak
Yeah, and I like see the the conversation around Will still also pulls around the conversation around Sports Republic that we've had back and forth. And we're not big fans. I'm pretty sure we've both made that pretty clear at this point.
00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:07:47
Zak
But what can't quite get over is the the absolute loving that's happening for Leo Siena right now, which is, to be clear, very de deserved.
00:07:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:07:56
Zak
But he is a signing that they have picked out from a Bundesliga team who, again, was picked out of sort of like the third league and then fifth league. And on paper, as we say, he he was exciting, but also that was the one that was seen probably as a bigger risk than, say, Vinazas and Tom Fellows.
00:08:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:08:17
Zak
And that's the one that's sort of paid off. And yet, You can't have it both ways. You can't say they're absolutely terrible at transfers and subsequently say but our best players in the last two seasons that we've had have been Mati Fernandes, who was transferred in under their watch, and also Sienso, who's been transferred in under their watch. And like I ask how this relates to Will Steele. I don't think that he actually had a say in any of this.
00:08:45
Zak
And I think that's probably part of the problem.
00:08:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well,
00:08:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I've got some thoughts on that and and some bits to go into off the back of it. But let's have a little pause quickly, gather our thoughts, and have a message from our partners at Bionique.
00:09:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, mate, we are back. So, I want to talk, I want to carry on from what you saying about the summer window, the signings, whether Will still had an input. And I've got, I think, two thoughts. The first is that by the end of the season, I think that that we're going to look back on this transfer window and still think of it as more of a success than a failure.
00:10:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that Damien Downs is still, we haven't seen enough from him yet, but I still see potential in there. Sienza is obviously an absolute diamond in the rough in just about every aspect. for As a player, seemingly as as a human, great. Love to see it. Perfect.
00:10:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yander's come really good. It was clearly a period of adjustment in his first couple of games, but he really has stepped up. I think he's really solid. He's been really good for us. Fellows with the assist, Azaz with the goals. I think, you know, that's what happened at the weekend and that, you know, hopefully is enough to spark them both on.
00:10:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
think Fellows has been exciting on the pitch without a huge amount of stats to back it up so far. And Azaz has struggled a bit to sort of become a bit.
00:11:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
But once he got that goal, he went from strength strength on Saturday. And so... I still think that looking back at the window, we'll look at it a success where I think they will have let, have let Will still down is, you know, you said before, it's been his biggest criticism from outsiders looking in or the biggest concern of, Oh, does Will still have this ability to, to G up the players? Is he the sort of manager that inspires confidence?
00:11:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I don't know the answer to that. I wasn't on the training ground. I don't know. Maybe he is. But if if you can see that from the outside looking in and you're building this team of staff around him, you know, maybe bringing in someone who is known for that to back him up and give that viewpoint would have helped him too. just, I don't know. its it's It's really tricky in a row. I think he is clearly good footballing brain who will probably go on to be successful in other leagues. I don't know about in England.
00:12:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't know if his particular brand of style suits coming up against as many teams that are going to sit in a low block against you as as we come up against, or as you know any team that might come to take on. but
00:12:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, I just i don't know. I feel... Like there was potential there as well and that his potential is not determined by what he did or didn't achieve with us.
00:12:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just some other parts of the puzzle were missing, right?
00:12:42
Zak
Yeah, I agree wholeheartedly, mate, with pretty much everything you've said, to be honest. yeah I think they probably will do will go on to do great things. I don't know whether it's going to be the UK. I don't know whether it will come back in the future.
00:12:52
Zak
And then suddenly there's going to be, you know, a big... sort of return and it'd be like oh can you believe that this guy know used to manage Salampton at one point and didn't really do too well either right like we can say the same about looking at Nathan Jones currently with Charlton and we can kind of say the same about him right now right like he did at one point manage us and did not manage us well he was almost too the other way round right where he was too abrasive I think for for us
00:13:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
hmm
00:13:20
Zak
Yeah, I don't exert entirely know. like i don't think we're ever going to know why it didn't click and why all of a sudden all it took was him to go for the players to kind of play well. And I don't know if it's just because the the opposition we had those games, that was it.
00:13:35
Zak
Or, you know, maybe that the new guy is loud and put the fear of God into them. Like, you know, for the sounds of it, Juric was very much like that as well. know if you've seen recently, Greg, he had, after the Champions League match, he had a a bit of a Barney with Luckman. Did you see this?
00:13:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I saw a brief description of what sounds like a very chaotic affair where there was a lot going on all at once.
00:14:03
Zak
Yeah, so so he took he took him off because, you know, and Luckman was annoyed. And as he walked past, he said something to him. And Juric flipped his lid, like properly flipped his lid. And then there was a bit of Barmy and a bit of Afters. But then obviously the guy that they subbed on ended up scoring anyway.
00:14:20
Zak
So, and then, but then subsequently the their weekend game, they lost 3-0. So say what you want about that.
00:14:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:14:26
Zak
But like, that was supposedly part of it. And, and you know, quite a few players, you know, Flynn Downs, one of them, when he kind of, you know, I wasn't, really expecting him to still be in a Saints shirt, to be honest, come this season because of how sort adamantly was he wanted to leave in January.
00:14:41
Zak
You know, Adam Armstrong knew he wasn't going to get look in under him. There are other players that obviously did well under him, like Suleymane had his sort of, you know, should we call it renaissance for the short amount of time.
00:14:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
and no
00:15:01
Zak
But...
00:15:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
just putting together that highlight package for the summer window that's all it was let's be honest
00:15:06
Zak
Well, yeah, it just reminds me of when Mario Lamina put up his one and it was just 90% every other team member other than him. And he just kind of would occasionally pass the ball. But yeah, I think it's it's it's really difficult, right, to kind of put all of it on Will Stettle.
00:15:25
Zak
But something has happened with this interim manager that seems to have lit a fire. And it was something that he was not able to do for whatever reason. Was it the outside noise? Was it the fact that maybe he was a bit too calm and collected?
00:15:40
Zak
Again, we don't know what is on the training ground. Maybe because he's screaming in their ear and he's cheering them all up in the training ground. you know, it's it's different. And maybe that is not coming through on match day. Because again, like you heard his words saying about how we looked amazing in training and that every tri player is trying their best. And then it comes to match day and it's like, nah,
00:16:01
Zak
and so So, yeah, maybe you're right. Maybe it's just as simple as fact that we've got an actual character, like a proper bloke that just seems to be, you know, i don't want to put it down as weird, but it's pretty weird behavior if what has been said is true.
00:16:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:13
Zak
Like, looking hungry, like, again, it's like, it's the Arteta thing, right? It's the, it's the bring out a light bulb of pretending they all power it BS, right?
00:16:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah. I think that I think I described it before recording as somewhere between like Mikel Arteta left field or Ricky Gervais in the office like nonsense, right? It's somewhere in that ballpark between effective and insane. But look, if it's crazy and it works, is it really that crazy? Like yeah like us that we said yesterday, his track record with the under-21s, he clearly gets a tune out of players playing for him.
00:16:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's working. And, you know, unless the until the right person comes along, I have every faith that it will continue to work, right?
00:17:03
Zak
Yeah, the alternative is that we are putting too much credence in this new manager and that your your sister-in-law's point was the most valid, which is just that, okay, so we've just gone back to basics and we're not looking at tactic sports anymore.
00:17:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's...
00:17:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:19
Zak
and What I want you to do is pass the ball to each other when you think you can score a goal and then do that. And I'm going to put the players on the pitch that actually want to play and are the most fit and actually in the correct sort of positions rather than
00:17:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:17:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And there's something to be said for that. Look, I mean, nipper plays football at an under-8 level, and his coach brought out a magnet board, much to the amusement of the dads this weekend, and they got batted 9-4. So maybe just And I'll go out and play football is just the way to do it, you know?
00:17:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
You don't need that extra layer of complication.
00:17:53
Zak
Probably a big bit of a difference between professional football and an under-8s league, mate, but probably not as much as you'd think.
00:17:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't I going to say, not as much as you would think.
00:18:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, let's let's try and get it back on topic and talk some more about we'll still about what's next. But first, let's have a little break and hear a message from our partners at Zencaster.

00:18:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Alright, mate. And we are back. So, I mean, i mean if if Tactical Genius or Football Mastermind isn't it for Saints, do any of the names in the list at the moment give us that sort of energy that we clearly want, that sort of motivating factor, that character essence to bring the players to life?
00:19:08
Zak
No.
00:19:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. I mean, I'm right there with you on that.
00:19:13
Zak
like I don't i don't don't really see, like, we're being chucked around with, r like, Steve Cooper, i'm pretty sure he's enjoying lot spelling.
00:19:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't...
00:19:21
Zak
Sweden, want to say. Is he in Sweden? Somebody who's in Sweden. great no that's Graham Potter. Yeah, like, that just a lot of the names are being linked with, like, Gary O'Neill, no. stop Stop this. Let's stop pretending.
00:19:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:35
Zak
so So, yeah, I'm kind of in a sense of, like, well, just I just feel his... I don't know I already said this in one of our last episodes, Greg, but if you took out the fact that he was our under-21 coach and we randomly said we've got this, like, crazed German guy, right, called Tom Derecker, obviously like a mate of sports, right?
00:19:56
Zak
He's come in Everyone goes, it's the cheap Sports Republic offering. God's sake, because, you know, that is pretty much what a lot of people are going to feel about it and know how people feel about it so far to an extent.
00:20:10
Zak
So to say that say he was brought in at a permanent level and then after the first two games he wins two on the trot. What people's opinions at that point?
00:20:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:22
Zak
okay But at the moment, it's because he's still an interim and it was brought in as an interim and brought in as already part of the organization and is seen as the cheap option.
00:20:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
The mood changes, right?
00:20:31
Zak
but I'm not looking any of the options that are currently out there and being like, yeah, I'm really excited. like I know that some people have put the name of Mike Carrick out there and been like, oh, we didn't write a Middlesbrough. I'm like, yeah.
00:20:44
Zak
But there there's nobody truly out there at the moment, in my opinion, who I am really like, yeah, if we get them in, that is going to solve all of our problems.
00:20:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:54
Zak
I think this manager you would be incredible.
00:20:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mate, I'm just...
00:20:57
Zak
i I don't think that there's a magic... like You always put it at me, and it's it's a phrase I've started using quite a lot as well. There is no magic unicorn to resolve this problem, right?
00:21:06
Zak
And, like, you know, I don't know if it's a combination of, like, it's definitely a contributing factor.
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:14
Zak
It's Sports Republic not knowing the fact that sports is part of their name, right?
00:21:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:21:19
Zak
There is definitely bits there, like...
00:21:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:21
Zak
dismantling our scouting network when they first joined was pretty stupid, but also at that time, one of the best players that they'd scouted in their eyes was Elianusi. So who even knows?
00:21:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Look, I know that we say it mostly as a joke, and I've been saying it routinely, mostly as a joke, since our first manager hunt.
00:21:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
But if big, motivating, sort of larger-than-life characters with slightly left-field ways to motivate players is what we're after, Neil Warnock or Big Sam have got to be go be up there, surely. LAUGHTER
00:22:00
Zak
Yeah, but I also think that you have also fallen into that trap of being like, okay, well, who's about, who's around, who who could do that job? And like this is the perpetual existence of the old guard, right? Right up until Pulis stopped getting jobs. and that And now the old guard seems to just be this merry-go-round of, Graham Potter did well at Brighton once and has now had both the West Ham and Chelsea job, weirdly, right?

Zak
and And now there's a lot of sort of just like hiring and rehiring the other managers. You know, Rob Edwards was at Luton, left Luton, did well at Middlesbrough, now been given speech permission to go Wolves.
00:22:37
Zak
Why you would leave a successful Middlesbrough team to go to Wolves, I don't know.
00:22:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know if given permission is how I would describe that situation.
00:22:42
Zak
Well, given permission eventually after what clearly was a protest, and now people at Middlesbrough, like it's going to go through because if it doesn't,
00:22:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
given permission in the same way as I'm given permission to go out where my wife says fine do what you like it's not like you know yeah
00:23:01
Zak
Yeah, it's the same way that we supposedly gave permission to Matty Fernandes, or the same way that we gave permission to Virgil van Dijk to illegally meet in a hotel room with Liverpool representatives, right?
00:23:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:23:13
Zak
Yeah, okay. But again, like but my point is, that this is the problem. is It's the merry-go-round of, oh, he might do a job for us. He might do a job for us. like I don't want someone that's just going to do a job for us for like six months. So that's what I think the problem is.
00:23:25
Zak
And that there is no way to guarantee that. But like that's the problem, Greg. is like Do you see Allardyce as our manager for the next five to ten years? Or do you see him to get us through the season?
00:23:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe not 10.
00:23:42
Zak
How old is he now? Like 70?
00:23:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah oh You're right.
00:23:47
Zak
i get I get what you're saying, but like and I think my point is that i yeah I am open to any ideas bar anyone with extreme ties to Portsmouth, right? That's basically where I'm at. For more than any reason, isn't for personal reasons, it's that as soon as things go wrong,
00:24:05
Zak
the the level of toxicity that will happen will not be worth hiring him. Right? So at that point, just don't bother. So it's just a waste. It's just going to annoy all the fans and it's it's a waste.
00:24:19
Zak
And, you know, hopefully it's just the bookies trying to produce artificial, you know,
00:24:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:24
Zak
yes Again, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up going to Borough now with Rob Edwards going elsewhere. yeah, there's There's no real name, maybe Carrick, that jumps out at me.
00:24:36
Zak
So I'm kind of happy to just let things be for the time being, right?
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:24:41
Zak
And if that means that Tomber's in charge for a little bit, then fine. If he's in charge for two or three more games and loses all of them then like, yeah, we should probably up that. But I also just don't think that we are going to get a manager that really anybody's happy with. And I don't think that...
00:24:58
Zak
that's been the case for a long, long time. Right. And also we're not experts anyway, but we're just chatting. Yes. But like the way people talk about is like, I would be absolutely disgusted with this guy as a manager. And i'm like, well, he is in the managerial profession for a reason.
00:25:14
Zak
Like we've still got the job because, you know, he had quite impressive CV has never previously been fired from any jobs and did all right with some real low, low hanging fruit. And it just hasn't worked out. So
00:25:28
Zak
I don't know. I guess I'm just happy to just live in the moment for once in my life, Greg, which says a lot to have to how much Saints has just made me depressed in recent times.
00:25:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I see it. Look, I think you're right. There's no rush. Let's give him a couple more games, see where we're at. know that we've got a busy, busy period coming up, right? Something ridiculous like 13 games across the next like eight weeks.
00:25:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
But there's plenty the time. There's no rush to to have rush in the wrong person. Just make sure it's right, make sure it's good, and just keep winning.
00:26:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
all we want to do, really. that's That's all we ask for. Is it so much to ask?
00:26:11
Zak
Mate, yes, apparently so. Apparently the last two seasons have proven that wanting to win on an almost semi-regular basis, not even a semi-regular, just just just knowing that we have a chance is apparently wanting well too much.
00:26:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:26:26
Zak
And that's why we're in the position we're in. But to to finish it off on on Will still, mate, I wish him the best in his future career. I'm sorry it didn't work out.
00:26:37
Zak
I very much doubt he'll come back in the future. At least in a managerial sense, stranger things have also happened, but, you know, just didn it didn't kick on. you You said it every week, mate. You're like, it just feels like we're so close and yet so far.
00:26:53
Zak
And the problem was, is that every single result in that last couple run of games pushed us further and further away from where we wanted to be. and that's why he got the chop and would you know so far so good. So I wish him well, but and and a sad end to what could have been an exciting story, I think is there's probably my actual summary.
00:27:16
