Excitement for the Football Season Begins

00:00:14
Speaker
What is up goal line listeners? What a freaking glorious time to be alive with this past weekend out of the way. We have no more football-free weekends until February. Let's freaking go. Jordan, what's going on, man? Yeah, man, this is by far the most glorious time of the year. Got college football this weekend. It's an exciting time to be a fan of the game football, unlike Phil Dunnett, who likes the broke football.
00:00:43
Speaker
Yeah, we don't know get soccer out of here dude. We know the real football Yeah, man. I can't wait dude. I'm excited to watch a little bit of college get the went with the appetite a little bit this weekend We have the my 6u team. We have our season opener in two days. It's gonna be really really fun We scrimmage last week. We actually scrimmage the team. We're playing in the first game and just
00:01:04
Speaker
beat the piss out of them. So I know they're going to be trying to get their lick back, but I think I got my boys ready to go. So we'll be able to get some reports for the Arlington Tigers going next week too. And it's just, dude, like Drake said it, man, what a time to be alive. This is what we've been waiting all off season for. It's finally here. You ready to talk some football? I'm ready.

Falcons' Bold Moves and Defensive Hopes

00:01:30
Speaker
All right, let's start from the top. Falcons trade for Matthew Judon and signed Justin Simmons in a matter of three days last week. Dude, these are like moves that make me think like you're actually serious about winning football games. I mean, you get a top flight pass rusher and one of the best safeties in the NFL like
00:01:54
Speaker
I don't know, man, they have completely changed my attitude and outlook for this team for this year. I just, I'm shocked that they got both those guys in a week.
00:02:04
Speaker
It's a lot to be excited for man, the little bit of Falcons fan heart that's still beating inside of me is telling me like don't get too excited because it's the Falcons. They're always going to find a way to break your heart. But man, these are these moves are kind of haterproof. Do you know what I mean? Like they have just they address some. I mean, the defense was already pretty solid for the most part, at least on paper, address two of the biggest needs.
00:02:26
Speaker
It's going to be an exciting team, man. Like I said, as long as they do really what they should have done last year, man, but as long as they do go out and handle their business, they should cruise to an NSC South Division win. On paper, looking at these four teams, there's no competition. If you're stacking them up in Madden, nobody's picking those other three teams before you pick the Dirty Birds, man. I'm excited to see what they do this year, and I hope they reward their loyal fan base. Yeah.
00:02:54
Speaker
I, they definitely have the best safety tandem in the NFL now with Jesse Bates and Justin Simmons. I mean, both those guys were second team world pro last year. So, um, yeah, it's getting Matthew Jude on. I just, I was so excited because I mean, they haven't had a relevant pass rusher and I'm going to use the term relevant very loosely for Vic Beasley, but he did have one season where he tore it up, but
00:03:19
Speaker
Yeah.

Falcons' History of Pass Rushing Challenges

00:03:20
Speaker
Judon is a man. It's been since John Abraham, man. It's really been a decade, dude. Like he said, Beasley, I mean, and really, man, I think that was kind of a hollow season going back to the, you talking about that 2016 season when big Beasley, I believe he led the league in sacks, but I don't want to say he got about half his sacks in three games, man. I think he just, you know, he had a couple of big games in there and he was decent throughout the season, but he wasn't, he wasn't what you'd think of when you think about somebody being the sack king in the NFL. Yeah, dude.
00:03:45
Speaker
And this will be the first time in Grady Jarrett's career that he actually has somebody else on the defensive line that can actually do something. So going to be interesting, man, getting Grady Jarrett back, getting Jude on and having those two safeties over the top. Like, yeah, the defense was the one thing that everybody kept saying. I mean, if their defense can hold some teams down a little bit, but
00:04:06
Speaker
to their, their defense all of a sudden went from, it should be all right. It should be pretty fucking good

Can the Falcons Win the NFC South?

00:04:12
Speaker
now. I mean, they're going to have a good defense and singing the offense. Doesn't completely derail. Like, uh, I just do not see, I mean, hold on. Let me preface this by saying I do not see a world where the Falcons win less than 10 games, but again, it is the Falcons. So they could quite possibly go out and win five, but I just, I mean, with a schedule they have, like they should easily win 10 games.
00:04:35
Speaker
Yeah, it's dude, they have put together a fast explosive team and just a lot of athletes. You know, if Kirk cousins can get back to 85% and 90% of what he was pre Achilles injury, I think they're going to be just fine. And I think we're going to be watching some playoff football in Atlanta from January. Yeah, it's definitely an exciting time. Um, moving from that to not so exciting time.

Steelers' Quarterback Dilemma

00:04:58
Speaker
the Steelers quarterback issues, dude, I, did you get to see any, I mean, I'm going to use the word highlights, but did you get to see any highlights from this game that they played against the bills? It was ugly. It was ugly, man. I, uh, somehow it still feels like it's a little bit better than it was last year, the situation on an offense, but it seems like you're not going to know what you're going to have from week to week. I know no matter if it's, it's Russ or Justin Fields in there at QB.
00:05:27
Speaker
Dude, I mean, so they had two quarterbacks playing the entire game. This is four quarters of football, mind you. Russ and Justin Fields went to combine 19 for 27, which doesn't seem all that bad for 139 yards.
00:05:42
Speaker
Like, and that was the deal with Russ last year in Denver. You know, champagne didn't trust him to do anything but play the absolute safest brand of football possible. Basically a training wheels on man, like they, Pete Carroll is looking like a genius more and more for getting out of the Russell Wilson game, you know, a year early as opposed to a year late. Yeah, for sure. I just don't know what the better scenario is here, dude. If you're a Steelers fan, like I was, I watched a little bit of that game and the little bit I watched of Russ.
00:06:13
Speaker
Man, dude, he is just not there. He's cooked, man. He has nothing left. It's like all the, which is weird because, I mean, even though he was an awesome scrambler, he always played with

Dual Quarterback Strategy for Steelers?

00:06:24
Speaker
such poise that he kind of felt like, he seemed like the type that was going to age gracefully, right? But no, he's one of those dudes that it seems like it just went off a cliff once it went, man. Like the instincts just aren't there, the feel for the game. Like it's almost kind of like how Matt Ryan was, you know? Like Matt Ryan was fine and then,
00:06:40
Speaker
one day all, you know, it seemed like Matt Ryan was a top five Q went from being a top five QB to a bottom five QB, like overnight. Some similar vibes with Russell Wilson, man. I, he can still, you know, he is a vet. I think he can go out there and play that safe mistake free game, dude. I almost think like
00:06:56
Speaker
You already got a unique situation with where both these guys are at in their career. Why not just get weird with it and just have two quarterbacks, dude? Like, screw it, man. You know the defense is going to be the Steelers defense, right? Like, dude, maybe Russell Wilson starts. And then when you need a spark, man, it just starts going off the rails, bringing Justin Fields. Because Justin Fields is just the ultimate X factor, dude. He's almost like Jamis Winston in a way. He could go out and completely self-destruct and cost you the game.
00:07:19
Speaker
But on his good days, he's one of the best players in the NFL. You just never really know what you're going to get from him. I wouldn't even say week to week. It's almost play to play. You don't know what you're going to get from Justin Fields. But why not just go to QBs, man? Get funky with it. That's my vote. I mean, one thing you're going to get from Justin Fields is he's going to at least fumble on the ground at least once a game. Dude, even in limited play on Saturday, he still fumbled. He didn't lose it. But I just do not understand.

Justin Fields' Development Concerns

00:07:46
Speaker
I was kind of half joking when I said like Justin Fields is going to be a bus because all Ohio State quarterbacks are bus when he actually came out. But like dude, the dude literally cannot read a defense. That's why he gets sacked and hit so much because he sits in the pocket so long and just doesn't make a decision. He just does not have good decision making.
00:08:07
Speaker
Yeah, man. I just, it's not worse than Kenny pick it. Obviously I get that, but I mean, this is not good. Like you, you have to number two quarterbacks basically at this point. Yeah. The quarterback situation still going to be kind of an anchor around their neck of what should be a, you know, a pretty solid football

Brandon Aiyuk's Future with the 49ers

00:08:25
Speaker
team. Otherwise it's just, it's a different kind of anchor from what they had last year. Is it me or does it feel like
00:08:31
Speaker
The whole Brandon, I uked a Pittsburgh thing. It felt like it was about to happen. And then it almost feels like they put like a stop on it. Dude. Part of me feels like I uke wanted to watch them have both their quarterbacks out there for one full game. And he saw it. I would not be surprised at all if I uke signs tomorrow with the Niners, even if it's only a one year deal.
00:08:53
Speaker
Yeah I it's weird that they think is lingered on like this because it felt like we were moving towards the finish line on it. I at this point I'm almost positive that he's coming back to the Niners for at least a year I think that I was kind of doing well I was putting the kids to bed tonight I was doing a little bit of Twitter research seems that.
00:09:10
Speaker
The rumor right now is that him and his agent are just holding out and they're content to wait until, you know, right before the season starts to help, you know, milk another million or two a year out of the Niners. But it does sound like he's going to sign a multiyear deal with the 49ers, which I think that's still the best thing for a man. I think, you know,
00:09:27
Speaker
I think he'll be extending his career. I think his peak will last longer with the Niners than it will if he goes to

49ers' Quarterback Quandaries

00:09:32
Speaker
some of these other teams. Cause let's face it. He's looking to go to the new England and Pittsburgh, man. That's two of the worst QB and Cleveland. That's three of the worst QB situations in the league right now. Yeah. And I don't know if you caught any of the Niners game the other day, but party started and, uh,
00:09:48
Speaker
it did not go well. Like when, uh, when you don't have, uh, you kiddo and McCaffrey on the field, you sure do look average really fast. Like he didn't, he did not look comfortable at all playing football on Saturday night. So I just think it's best for all parties involved. If I, you goes back, I just,
00:10:08
Speaker
Yeah. I seriously thought the Steelers thing made sense before I watched those two quarterbacks play on Saturday. And after watching that, I'm like, there's no way this dude is choosing this over San Francisco. Like I just, I don't care how much money it is.
00:10:23
Speaker
Um, more quarterback

College Football Playoff Dark Horses

00:10:25
Speaker
talk. I don't know if you saw any of it, but Bo Nix has looked really impressive. Really good. Two preseason games he's played. It looks like they made the right decision. I had high hopes when I saw, yeah, when I saw that the Broncos get him just cause
00:10:40
Speaker
Like I said, man, I've said it multiple times on the show, Sean Payton's a scumbag, but dude knows offensive football, man. So yeah, I think Bo Nicks probably got to be right up at the top of the rookie of the year conversation for this season after what we've seen so far in the preseason. Yeah, he looked really good. I watched some of that game last night and he drove them down the field and looked really good doing it. And then the other quarterback news, Jaylen Daniels was official, or Jayden Daniels, excuse me, was officially named starting quarterback for the commanders, which
00:11:10
Speaker
And what else were they going to do? I'm interested to see how it works out for him, man. He seems, he's so slight, man. Like, and I feel like I saw him get rocked multiple times last season, man, in college. So I just, I don't know, man, hopefully he plays a little bit safer and then take some of those big hits he took in while at LSU. Yeah, no doubt. That's all I got for NFL news. There wasn't really much that happened in the last week. All right. You ready to debut our new college football dedicated segment? Yeah, but I'm not ready for this song.
00:11:57
Speaker
Y'all gotta let us know what you think. For those that don't know, that's Shador Sanders, son of Deion, starting quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes with his rap song. He put out this offseason called Perfect Timing. I think the song is so bad it's good and low-key kind of slaps. Jordan absolutely hates it and thinks it's just audio hell.
00:12:14
Speaker
Y'all chime in, let us know if you give that a thumbs up, thumbs down. I'm not opposed to changing it to something else for our intro song for college football, but I think it works, man. Jordan, you had a topic of conversation you wanted to get started for our debut college football segment.
00:12:30
Speaker
Yeah, I just thought it'd be kind of fun since college football starts this weekend for us to come up with four teams outside of the top 10 that we think could make it into the college football playoffs. So I just, I just want to get the college football talk rolling. As everyone knows, there is a couple of college football games this weekend. We got Florida state and Georgia tech at noon Eastern on Saturday. It's in Dublin, Ireland. So didn't Nebraska play in Ireland last year? Two years ago.
00:12:58
Speaker
Who do they play Northwestern? It was one of the worst football games ever. I felt bad for people of Ireland Basically like a rock fight, right? Mm-hmm What about last year was the hour with game last year? I think Notre Dame played in it last year I was gonna say I don't know how it's not Notre Dame like every single year Yeah, I'm pretty sure Notre Dame played in it last year. I
00:13:21
Speaker
All right. What were you wanting to tee up for college talk? Yeah. So we'll pick four teams outside of the top 10 of the first AP pool that we think have a good shot of going to the playoffs. So I'll get us started. This is going to make Seth really happy. I'm going to pick Tennessee for the first team.
00:13:42
Speaker
I just, I think this team is loaded and, um, we've talked about it numerous times, even with a hard schedule, even if you lose two games now with the play with the 12 team playoff, you still got a really good chance of making it. And I just feel like this team is going to do really well with this, this season. I could definitely see them losing two games, but I still think they get in.
00:14:02
Speaker
They're, they're new quarterback to Nico. I'm not even going to pretend to pronounce his last name. Looks like he's going to be awesome, dude. I think he's got a good chance to be the best like first time starter in college this season. Yeah, they're going to be, um, they're going to be really tough this year. I just, I don't know, man, I just, I like hypo a lot. He's a really good coach. So I really feel like they're going to be, um, there'll be a tough team to beat.
00:14:27
Speaker
My second choice is Kansas State. I feel like this is probably the team to beat in the Big 12. There is a lot of good teams in the Big 12 though. I had a tough time with this one. I just think at least one team from the Big 12 makes it. Oklahoma State's going to be really good as well. And you also got Utah who
00:14:48
Speaker
And that's a really good football team. Like the big 12 is going to be tough. Colorado is just going to get boat raced in this conference, dude. They are going to be killed. We talked about it last season. I think all the stars are aligned for an ugly season in Colorado. Well, I was, I was just like doing some research today and I was looking around and dude, it's like everybody's favorite bet taking the under five and a half wins on Colorado. Like almost everyone's taking it. So
00:15:14
Speaker
Who knows? I mean, everybody's favorite bet usually crashes and burns. So maybe they do win over six games. Two lane was my next choice because there's going to be a group of five team that makes it. And two lane is just set up really well. They got Ty Thompson from Oregon. He's a transfer from Oregon. I just really feel like he's going to do well there. And they'll probably either run the table or lose one game. So I feel like they'll probably get in there.
00:15:43
Speaker
And then, uh, last team I picked was LSU as much as I hate the guy. And I do not like Brian Kelly at all. I think he's a dweeb and an absolute dork of a football coach, but he, he's really good at what he does. And he knows how to get his teams ready. Um, and again, it 12 team playoff changes it, man. You can lose two games and still make the playoffs. So I think LSU is another one of those teams that could definitely make some noise and get in.
00:16:11
Speaker
Yeah, I really like that K-State pick, man. I've messed with him a little bit on college football 25 on Xbox. That's kind of my entry point for most of my college football watching. I am getting back into it this season for the most I've been into it for in a very long time. So that's why we decided to make this a weekly segment on the show. We're actually going to predict the top 28 games, man, or the top 25 games from week to week. Yeah, I'm looking at K-State scheduling. They got number 21 Arizona coming to town.
00:16:38
Speaker
They got a trip to BYU, Oklahoma State coming to town like, dude, I think Kansas State's got a pretty realistic shot at running the table and being undefeated, man. They're going to definitely have a good shot at doing it. That Kansas game is the, it's at Kansas State, I know, but that game makes me really nervous because Kansas is going to be really good as well this year.
00:16:59
Speaker
And then especially if Kansas States, you know, if they are going in undefeated, you know, they're going to get the freaking Super Bowl level effort from Kansas. Two possible issues to me on their schedule. They got to go to Tulane week number two. And I think Tulane is going to be really tough. And then they got to close the season at Iowa State, which Iowa State is a house of horrors for a lot of teams. So that's probably their two biggest hurdles on the season. But
00:17:23
Speaker
Yeah, they're going to be good. I'm looking through it. I don't think I, I don't think I would predict a loss. You know what I mean? I'm not seeing a loss jump out at this team. Yeah. So I think they could end up getting up, you know, end up getting a high seed in the, uh, the playoff bracket. Yeah. They're going to be good, man. It's going to be a, it's going to be a really interesting season. I'm, I'm so excited for college football to start. Yeah. I'm just excited for real football, man. Like I can't freaking wait for Wednesday, our flag game. And we got college football on Saturdays. It's going to be glorious.
00:17:50
Speaker
Yeah, that's that's really all we had for college football talk. Like I said, with not having a full week of games this week, I just wanted to give a little bit of an appetizer for the season, so it's all I got. All right, you ready to get into our previews for 2024? Let's do it.

Dolphins' Cold-Weather Challenges

00:18:21
Speaker
All right, we got three teams tonight. Again, we're firmly in with the heavyweights. This is our second to last man. Next week will be our last week doing previews, Jordan. So we've made it through 26 teams. Got six left to go. We're doing three tonight. Got the dolphins, eagles, 49ers. Where do you want to start at? Let's start with the dolphins. All right. So the dolphins last year went 11 and six.
00:18:43
Speaker
Uh, four and three and one score game. So nothing really take away from there. These guys were second on offense 19th on defense, right? So the defense was lacking a little bit, but these guys were the second rate offense. They were fifth overall in point differential. However, got to point out, they ended up with a point differential for the season of positive, you know, plus one Oh five, 50 of those points came in one game. They had that 70 to 20 absolute shellacking against the Bronco. So I, you know, we, we love point differential as a stat here, just to indicate the overall strength of a team. And, um,
00:19:14
Speaker
But we got to point out that, you know, theirs is a little bit more stronger than it should be. They were a really strong team last year, man. Really, really good. Just kind of faded down the stretch. And then they got a brutal draw in the playoffs, having to go at Kansas City, which is always tough. But this ended up being, you know, one of the second or third coldest games in NFL history, depending on which weather service you looked at and kind of just, they were basically dead on arrival in the playoffs.
00:19:35
Speaker
Yeah man, it's kind of a shitty thing for them. It just seems like every year they get a bad draw man going to play in a cold weather city. But again, it's the NFL man got to play outside and not every game is going to be 90 and sunny in Miami. So I don't know how you remedy this dude, like to going back to college, he's never played well in cold weather. So I just, I don't know how they can fix this honestly, at this point.
00:20:03
Speaker
got to get home field, man. I think I do think they got enough talent. This is going to be the third, uh, the third year and Mike McDonald's offense. So you expect even, you know, more improvement development. Um, they got to get home field though, man. I think if they, if they can win that, you know, the AFC should be a little bit weaker. I don't think the bills are going to be as strong this season as they've been the last couple of years. Dolphin should have won the division last year, dude. They have, you know, they let the bills catch fire and beat them up down the, uh,
00:20:31
Speaker
down the stretch is, is, you know, the dolphins had that fade through December. Um, but they got to get home field band to, to, to stay out of those cold weather games in Baltimore, Casey, uh, or, you know, any, anywhere else up in the AFC North. Um, and I do think they can make a run, man. I don't think this team, I don't necessarily think this is one of the best two or three teams in the league, but this is definitely a team that if things break, right, they could make it to a Superbowl.
00:20:56
Speaker
Let me, uh, let me read you their last six games. Cause I saw somebody mentioned this yesterday. Their last six games of the season is absolutely brutal. They got to go to green Bay on a Thursday night football game. They have to play the jets at home. They have to go to Houston. They have to play the Niners at home. They have to go to Cleveland and then they have to end the season going to the jets.
00:21:23
Speaker
Yeah, that that is. Yeah. So they need to be like 10 to know or 11 to know going into that stretch because they might win in one of those games. I seriously think they go on six in the last six weeks of the season like that. I'll give them New York at home and I think they'll beat the Jets in Miami. But other than that, yeah, dude, it's not looking good, man. It's yeah, that is really, really tough. Like I said,
00:21:46
Speaker
They got to get over that. I don't know what you can do, man. I really don't know what you can do to get over that. Especially when you got a QB is, you know, from Hawaii, went to college in Alabama. Same deal, man. I think he just, uh, he's just a warm weather player. There's players that are like that and really their whole, their whole style of football just does not translate to the cold. You know what I mean? Like it feels like they should be playing in a dome somewhere, but you know, they're pretty well suited to hard rock stadium down there in, uh, in Miami.
00:22:12
Speaker
So after hearing that, you know, murderers really at the last season, I think they end up some something similar to where they were last year, dude. I'll say a slight improvement. I think they do win the AFC East and I'll have them win in a playoff game. I think we do see to get a win in the playoffs because this is a really good football team. I think it's a good football team. I like the coach. I like the style of football they play. But like I said, I just it does not travel man. This is it's not January football. They play September October football. They do not play January football down there in Miami.
00:22:40
Speaker
I think their defense is going to be better this year. Um, hopefully they get a full season of Jalen Ramsey. Um, I think their defense will be improved this year. Dude, I am not, I think this team's going to win less than they did last year. Like when they went 11 last year. Yeah, they were 11 and six last year. Overall got off to a really hot start and they're not going to sneak up on anybody. You know, I think people know that.
00:23:06
Speaker
that people are going to be more prepared for him. I think, you know, they had a good two years ago, they were solid, you know, they ended up going wanted under the bills and the playoffs because, you know, without to a quarterback.
00:23:18
Speaker
And last year, I think the first half of the season, I think people were really just kind of on their heels, but it seemed like defenses started catching up to them as the year went on. I'm going to say they go, I don't think they won the East. I seriously think the Jets are the best team in the East. I'll say they go nine and eight, and I'd say they get a wild card and lose round one again.
00:23:39
Speaker
Yeah, I see. I do not have that much faith in Aaron Rodgers, man. You know, he already looked shaky that last year, or not shaky, but he looked, you know, just decent. He didn't look like the Aaron Rodgers that we've come to know over the last 15 years, that last year in Green Bay. And then obviously he went out four plays into last season. So I'm iffy on Aaron Rodgers. I do think the Dolphins win this division.
00:23:59
Speaker
Dude, the thing is, is for the last two years, all the jets have needed was a decent quarterback. They don't even need him to be all star Aaron Rogers. They just need him to be better than Zach Wilson, Mike white and, uh, Oh God, what's the name now? Whatever the jets were trotting out their quarterback the last two years. That's all they need is.
00:24:20
Speaker
him to be better than those guys, which even a 60% Aaron Rogers is way better than those guys. So I'm just taking decent Aaron Rogers takes the jets, uh, to an AFC East title. All right. Hey man, people like when we disagree. So, uh, this, this will be something to keep up with all season long. Jordan, Jordan's buying the jet stock. I'm sticking with the dolphins in the, uh, the AFC East, the bills will probably end up winning it now that we say that now that we're both off of them. Yeah, they're going to win it. Yeah.
00:24:49
Speaker
All right. Uh, where do you want to go next? Philly or San Fran? Let's go to Philly.

Eagles' Season Outlook and Draft Strength

00:24:55
Speaker
So Philly was really the tail of two seasons last year. They, I would, I think it's safe to say they were the best team in the league, the, uh, the first half of 2023. And then they got absolutely dumped by the 49ers mid season. And it seemed like that just knocked them off their axis and they never got back going. You know, both coordinators gone.
00:25:15
Speaker
It's a chance the head coach was going to get gone. I mean, they flamed out all the way through the wildcard of the playoffs, got absolutely smoked by the Tampa Bay Bucks down in Tampa. It was an ugly end to the season, man. You usually don't see that a team that starts off that good completely falling apart.
00:25:32
Speaker
Ended up going 11 and six. They were eight and three in one score games. And, you know, a lot of those one score games came in the first half of the season. So it's possible it was a little bit of a mirage, how good they really were, but it just, you know, coming off the Super Bowl loss, it felt like Jalen Hurst leveled up again and the team, they just looked really, really strong. They ended up 10th in offense. I didn't realize they'd gotten this bad, man. They were 29th in defense by the end of the season last year. They just could not stop anybody over the second half of the season. So yeah, all the way down to 29th in defense.
00:26:01
Speaker
And they ended up 15th overall point differential. I think the true Eagles team is a lot closer to that team. We saw go to the Superbowl in the first half of last season and they just caught some sort of funky, you know, that one was called a virus mad that they could just not shake the second half of last year.
00:26:17
Speaker
Yeah, they did really shore up the defense though, between the draft and, um, free agencies. So I feel like their defense is going to be 10 times better than it was last year. I mean, they got back CJ Gardner Johnson, who really helped them on the way to the Superbowl being their, um, their Rover safety. Um, I just, I think drafted really, dude, that's one thing about this team and we talked about it after the draft.
00:26:42
Speaker
I've never seen a team draft better than the Eagles. Like, they just literally pick best available every time they draft. And it always was probably best GM in the league.
00:26:53
Speaker
And I think adding sake one to their offense, I mean, this is no disrespect to DeAndre swift, but dude, going from DeAndre swift to sake one is like going from driving a porch to a Lamborghini. I mean, a porch is still a really nice car, but dude, you're getting a Lamborghini behind that offensive line. I just feel like him. And we've never seen sake woman on an offense like this, dude, sake one is, I mean, even that year the giants made the playoffs, their offense was still like almost a little bit gimmicky.
00:27:19
Speaker
with all the, the read options that they're doing with Daniel Jones. Like this is going to be the first time we've really seen Saquon featured in an offense like this since he's been in the NFL. Yeah. So I was about to say, imagine him and Jaylen hurts running the read option as opposed to him and Daniel Jones. Like I just, I feel like this team is going to be
00:27:36
Speaker
With with the three white are the two wide receiver weapons and Dallas got her along with sake one I just I feel like this team is gonna be so much better than it was last year I'm actually pretty high on the Eagles. Honestly, I think this team is gonna be really good What did they end up with the record? Sorry last year
00:27:55
Speaker
11 and six last year. I think the record still ended up pretty good, but you know, they started off eight and one. I think they end up 12 and five. I think they win the East. And honestly, I could easily see them going to that FC championship game.
00:28:07
Speaker
Yeah, same man. I see these guys 12 or 13 wins. I do think they edge out the Cowboys in the East. And I think it's going to be, you know, just depending on how it breaks out, man, I think it's going to be them, the Packers, uh, lines and Niners kind of gunning for that number one seed, man. I think all four of them are going to be in the mix.
00:28:25
Speaker
I think they get back to form as we all just do it. I think they get back to form how they were last season. And I think a lot of people are actually sleeping on them because it was so ugly second half of last season. So I think they got a chance to catch some folks by surprise first month and a half or so of the season. Yeah, I agree. And I'm right there with you, man. I would not be surprised one bit if we see the Eagles back in the Super Bowl. I think they're at the short. I think they're at the tippy top of the list of teams that can win the Super Bowl this year. Yeah, it's just so loaded to you, man.
00:28:53
Speaker
Yeah.

49ers' Strengths and Championship Aspirations

00:28:54
Speaker
Yeah. It's probably the most talented 53 man roster in the league. Um, a team that you could make an argument for in that, that combo though, San Francisco 49ers, these guys went 12 and five last season. They were one in three in one score games actually, but you know, they did pretty well in one score games in the playoffs. Um, really that 12 and five is even kind of misleading. They had a three game losing streak in the middle of the season when they were pretty banged up with injuries. And then they got dumped by the Ravens on, was that Christmas night or Christmas Eve? That was Christmas night, wasn't it?
00:29:23
Speaker
Uh, yeah, it was Christmas night. I can't remember. Yeah, it was your Christmas. Yeah, Christmas night. They got dumped by the Ravens in a really big game, um, at home. And then they lost a meaningless game to the Rams last week of the season. So these guys were first in offensive DVOA. So number one offense last season, number four defense third overall and point differential. So this was really a historically great team in the regular season last year. Um, you know,
00:29:48
Speaker
They made it, there were a couple of plays away from making it to the Superbowl. I mean, from, from winning the Superbowl. They had a little bit of a shaky playoff run, depending on how you look at it. The actual results were shaky. I think it was pretty impressive seeing, you know, the mental strength they showed in those games, making a fourth quarter comeback to beat the Packers, beat a really good Packers team in San Fran. And then, you know, they were basically dead to rights in the NFC championship and they somehow rose up and, and came back on the lines, man, with a little bit of assist.
00:30:16
Speaker
from Dan Campbell. Uh, and they, you know, I mean, they had the chief speed, you know, Jordan's not the biggest Brock Purdy fan, but the last three times Brock Purdy left the field in the Superbowl, his team was winning and a defense could just not get that last stop to, uh, to put the knife in Patrick, my home's heart, man. So, uh, brutal, brutal loss. You worry about the Superbowl hangover, you know, how much of, how much of an effect do you think that's going to be this year, Jordan?
00:30:41
Speaker
I think it's definitely going to have an effect, but I think these guys are hungry. I think this is the last time we see this team fully together as assembled currently. I just feel like they got age against them. I feel like obviously salary cap is against them. But yeah, I mean,
00:30:58
Speaker
dude, it's hard to pick against this team. This team is just so good. And again, top to bottom, just an absolutely loaded roster. Um, I think they're pretty similar to last year, man. I just, I feel like this team is going to be tough to beat dude, outside of that three game run, that three game stretch where they lost all three games in like really weird form.
00:31:19
Speaker
in the middle of a season, which was the weirdest fucking stretch I think I've ever seen until the Eagles stretch. Um, this team is just so good and so consistent. Yeah. I think they're going to be right up there for the number one seed. And, uh, I think they're going to win right around the same number of games. I think 13, 14 wins is completely attainable for this roster.
00:31:39
Speaker
Yeah, you know, I mentioned they were, you know, one in three and one score games. Most teams have 10 or 11 one score games. These guys were just thumping pretty much every team they played. Like they really, they did not leave much doubt. They were absolutely working over teams, which you just don't see a lot in the NFL. Yeah. Another year of film out there on Brock Purdy, which
00:31:59
Speaker
Well, you know, year two of Brock pretty could not have gone any better. Like I said, he walked off the field three times in the Super Bowl. This team went into the fourth quarter or overtime. Um, and he broke the franchise records for a team that had guys like, uh, you know, like John Brody, Joe Montana, Steve young at quarterback, he broke all basically every passing record there is to break last season. But I think the jury still out, you know, he's playing for a new contract.
00:32:24
Speaker
Obviously, like Jordan said, he's, he's a good player. I think his, he's like, I think the haters go too hard on him and I think the Brock Purdy fans are maybe too high on him. I do think he is, he's a product of this system, but I feel like he's like the perfect QB to come in and run a Kyle Shanahan system. So I think he's a, I don't know if question mark is the right thing, but I think you could possibly see him take a step back just because I don't think it's possible for him to do any better than he was last season.
00:32:51
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I can see that. I mean, I just, I still, like I said, I still think this team is going to be really good. And, uh, yeah, I'm not down on this team at all, man. Like I could see a little bit of a Superbowl hangover, but again, the talent is just too strong on this team for them to be bad. I mean, there's just, there's, there's just no way I just, I do outside of an injury to, um, one of their main players. I just, I mean,
00:33:18
Speaker
I'm telling you right now, if McCaffrey goes down at any point in the season, I would start to get really nervous. Cause I still feel like he's the key cog and he's what makes this offense work. Cause I mean, dude, we, we talked about when the trade happened. This team has been completely different since the time that that trade happened two years ago to now. I just, he is the cog that makes that offense run.
00:33:42
Speaker
Yeah, for sure they were more of a defensive team based around the running game which they became an explosive offensive team after they got McCaffrey. Yeah, I'm still I'm, I would not be surprised one bit to see them holding the Lombardi trophy when the dust settles on this season. I'm picking against it though man I'm actually picking them to go out.
00:34:01
Speaker
prior to the NFC championships just because it's so hard to even get to that game to be one of the final four teams in NFL and they've done it four out of the last five seasons man 2019 2021 2022 and 2023 these guys have been have made it to the conference championship game and
00:34:19
Speaker
That's just not normal, man. I say that even though the Chiefs have done it basically every year also. But it's just so difficult, man. And at the end of the day, Brock Perdue's not Patrick Mahoney. So I think something happens, whether it's, God forbid, it's injuries pile up. Hopefully, it's not that.
00:34:35
Speaker
I think maybe they just get a couple of bad balances because I mean they were a couple of bounces of the ball away from, from not making it back last season. So yeah, I'm saying another super successful regular season. Like I said, I would not be surprised to see them win 12 games again, but I think, I think their luck runs out this playoff run.
00:34:53
Speaker
Let me ask you a question. And actually one of my friends is a big 49ers fan. I actually proposed this to him. Okay. So say the season goes down the way you say it does. They have a really good regular season and don't even get to the NFC championship game. Does the seat get a little bit hot for Shanahan at that point?
00:35:12
Speaker
I don't know, dude. I mean, the track record has been so good, right? Like they, they could have, I mean, did he, looking back, how crazy was it that they did as good as they did with Jimmy Garoppolo at QB that year against the Chiefs, you know? But I mean, if you're replacing him,
00:35:26
Speaker
I think it's maybe like you bring in Belichick, you know what I mean? I think you only, I think it's a situation like how Tony Dungy was with the Bucks, those years right before Gruden won, man. I think you only replace him if you have like a no shit like upgrade that you think is going to be the one to get you over the hump. You know, I don't think you fire him just to bring in.
00:35:43
Speaker
some retread coordinator from somewhere or, you know, take a swing at the big college coach. I think maybe if you know, Belichick wants to come coach you and he's got, he's got a staff or some scheme lined up that seems can't miss. I think maybe you listen, but I don't know, dude, Shanahan, he's, he's a pretty damn good coach, man. Here's the other issue too is, I mean, after this season, they're going to have to pay pretty, and I, I've told you this numerous times. I just don't think they're going to pay him, dude. I just,
00:36:08
Speaker
I don't think to do this. I don't know what he's going to ask either, man. You know what I mean? I don't know. I mean, from everything we see, dude, like maybe he just leaves it to his agent. I feel like from what we've seen of Brock Purdy, man, I don't think Brock Purdy is looking to get every last dollar at the table. You know what I mean? He's already going to.
00:36:24
Speaker
exponentially surpass whatever his wildest expectation could have been from being the last pick in the draft, you know? No, I agree with that. But I mean, dude, when you're an NFL player, anytime you have a chance to sign a record quarterback deal or any kind of deal, you have to get every dollar you can out of that deal. I mean, I agree. Like he could snap the ball on the first play of 2025 and never play another game. Like you just,
00:36:48
Speaker
You never know when it's your last play in the NFL, so you got to get that money. I feel you, man. I wouldn't hold it against him if he did, like I said, try to get his man, because you're talking about securing generational type wealth for your family. But yeah, I don't know. He is going to be an interesting case when his contract comes up, because it's just a really unique situation that he's been in since he's gotten to San Francisco.
00:37:12
Speaker
Yeah, it's a, this is a make or break year for the Niners for sure. I mean, I just, I think this is their last year of, uh, of the team as it's constructed now. And I could see a shakeup if it doesn't go well this season. So I don't know that the Niners got a lot to prove this season.
00:37:30
Speaker
I agree because like you said, you could always probably find ways to get creative and get around the salary cap stuff. At least it seems like you can always kind of kick the can on that type of thing down a year, but dude, everything is age, man. This is not a young team at this point. It feels young just because Brock Purdy's emergence, but dude,
00:37:49
Speaker
Even Christian McCaffrey, he feels young, but he's a vet at this point, dude. He's been in the league a while, even though he still seems... It seemed like he got that refresh from going to San Fran. This is an old-ish team. I wouldn't say they're ancient yet, but they're definitely... The window's closing, man. The window's not wide open for San Fran at all. 100%.
00:38:08
Speaker
All right, we have two questions for listener mail. So first off, we got from James Masley. Who do you think is the best backup quarterback coming into the year? Is it Josh Dobbs? Good God. I would say it's probably whoever ends up being number two in Pittsburgh, man. I think either one of those guys would be the worst starter, but I think they're probably the best backup. Yeah.
00:38:37
Speaker
It's hard to argue that one. Yeah, I'll agree with you there. You know who else would be interested, man? God forbid Patrick Mahomes gets hurt, but seeing Carson Wentz coached up by Andy Reid, man. Yeah, we've never got to really see him play in it. I mean, ever since that injury that he had. He was MVP 2017 season that Eagles team went on to one Super Bowl before he got hurt. He would have been MVP that season if he finished the year.
00:39:07
Speaker
Um, and yeah, it's just, it's, I don't know what happened. It's never been close to that since he came back, but I would just, you know, as if it was something to keep an eye on, dude, maybe if the chiefs wrap up, um, you know, the number one seed early, maybe we get to see Carson went start and play a whole game week 17. I'd be interested to see what that looks like. Yeah, I agree.
00:39:25
Speaker
All right, and then our buddy Zach Hertzer said, is there any particular game that you're especially excited for this season? For me, it's just a game that we're going to in person, man. We're gonna go see Titans Colts with our buddy Hawk, and then I think me and my dad and my brother are gonna go to Titans Packers there in Nashville. So those two are exciting just because it's always fun going to a live NFL game.
00:39:45
Speaker
Yeah, I'm going to Vegas for the Falcons game. So I'm most excited to go to that one. But dude, I think week one's got the sexiest matchup to meet it. I think Ravens and Chiefs opening on Thursday night football is going to be a hell of a way to start it. And then everybody keeps forgetting, dude, Friday night we get Packers Eagles right after that. So it's gonna be a fun opening weekend, man, with a Thursday and Friday night game.
00:40:09
Speaker
I'll go ahead and lay down an early prediction, man. I think Lamar Jackson goes the F off, dude. I think he's been stewing off season on how that AFC championship game went. I'd be one to bet he goes off and hangs an L on a KC to open up the season. And it never really seems like the Chiefs really care too much about the opening games. Yeah.
00:40:26
Speaker
I mean that, that lions game last year was just a hell of a football game, but it just, it, it doesn't seem like there's the urgency coming out of the gate for them. Like there is other teams. So yeah, it wouldn't surprise me at all. And I think that Packers Eagles game is a potential NFC championship, a preview. So I'm very excited to watch that game as well.
00:40:46
Speaker
Yeah, if you're the Chiefs, you're firmly in the mode of like the only thing that matters is make the playoffs healthy. Like they've shown now they can be road warriors and go on the road and still get all the way back to the Super Bowl, man. So I think as long as they get in, I really don't think, obviously they'd love to have the one seed just because it's an easier path.
00:41:03
Speaker
I don't think the Chiefs are overly concerned about what seed they are in the playoffs. I agree. I see them getting off to a slowish start. All right, so that's it for our last football free episode. We'll be able to talk some actual pigskin action next week. Jordan has some closing thoughts and we'll get out of here, man. Yeah, like Seth said, enjoy the football this weekend and we'll see you guys next Monday.
