Dealing With Trust Issues

Do we trust God? Do we trust others? God shows us how good He is- and we can have deep trust in Him. When we have this trust, we can let others in and do the things God is guiding us to do.  He can heal our trust issues, no matter how deep they are.

Introduction to 'Filling You Up with Hope'

fillingyouupwithhope
Hi, it's Abby from Filling You Up with Hope. It's another Monday, another episode where we go through God's Word.

Scripture Study: Numbers 19

00:00:10
fillingyouupwithhope
We started at the beginning in Genesis a couple of months ago now, and now we're in Numbers. Today it's starting in Numbers 19, and we we go through God's Word and we talk about mental health things.

Theme of Hope in Jesus

00:00:31
fillingyouupwithhope
And more than anything, we talk about the hope that we have in Jesus. And we're talking about trust today. And that's such a big thing, right? Because so many of us have been hurt, right? By a friend, by a relationship, and this affects our trust a lot of times. And sometimes we build up walls And we we don't let people in. And we're trying to protect ourselves, right? So we we don't trust.

Does God Guide Us to Build Walls?

00:01:09
fillingyouupwithhope
But is God guiding us to do that? um God shows us that he is different than people. And we're going to have some amazing ver an amazing verse in Psalm 56 about trust.
00:01:29
fillingyouupwithhope
And it's just such a reminder that people, yes, like we get let we get let down, we let down others sometimes, right? But that is not God. That is not God. God is trustworthy. He is safe.

Trusting God and Building Relationships

00:01:46
fillingyouupwithhope
And when we really take that in, and I think a lot of people, and i me included, have not fully taken that in, because I believe if we do,
00:01:58
fillingyouupwithhope
that it's going to not just affect our relationship with God, but we're going to be able to trust others, right? If he's guiding us into a relationship, we don't have to have self-made walls and trust issues because we can trust where God is leading us to. So it's just something to think think about. Are you able to trust where God is leading you to, right?

Israelites Prepare for the Promised Land

00:02:27
fillingyouupwithhope
And God is leading the Israelites, like preparing them for going to the promised land. And so that's where that's where we are. And there's more, there's, um so chapter 19, there's purification instructions, there's instructions for contact with the dead body that you're unclean and and for seven days. And this is,
00:02:57
fillingyouupwithhope
that God's word is amazing and it's all connected. And you know, I don't think we'd understand fully like the good Samaritan in Luke chapter 10, if we didn't understand these rules, right? and The people didn't want to stop and help the Samaritan be one of the reasons. um One reason is that people in that area did not get along with Samaritans. Those two groups did not get along with each other.
00:03:27
fillingyouupwithhope
Another one is they would have been unclean if that person really was, because they were left for dead, right? So if they really were dead, then they would be unclean.

Mosaic Law and Jesus' Teachings

00:03:39
fillingyouupwithhope
So we get by going through numbers and going through Mosaic law, we really get a picture of how Jesus changed everything and and really taught us like what we talk about, that it's about our hearts.
00:03:56
fillingyouupwithhope
right It's about our hearts and our hearts being pure. And if we have trust issues, like our hearts pure, right? Are we really loving the way that God wants us to? So now we're in chapter 20 and the people are going towards Canaan and and they're in they're in a desert and there's no water.
00:04:27
fillingyouupwithhope
So you can imagine like how they're feeling and they assemble against Moses and Aaron, right? There's a lot of the past many weeks, right? There's been a lot of complaining against Moses and Aaron,

Trusting God vs. Complaining

00:04:44
fillingyouupwithhope
right? Instead of like a big message today is yes, trust, but also praying first, right? So if they're thirsty,
00:04:55
fillingyouupwithhope
and struggling, right? And what are we thirsty for? What are we struggling with in our life? It can be financial, it can be and loneliness. and Are we complaining about it? Or um is that what our go-to thing is? I think as human beings, a lot of times that is our go-to. Like I need to, we call it venting, right? I need to vent.
00:05:25
fillingyouupwithhope
and need to get this out. And I think that God gave us that desire to vent because He wants our hearts and we're supposed to be doing that to Him. so um So when we're struggling with anything, no matter what it is, the first line of defense is to turn is to turn to God. Pour those feelings out like David does and in the book of Psalms, um pour those feelings out, ask for guidance, ask what God wants you to do, no matter what it is. Pray for the people that are hurting you. um Pray for water, right? that's but they But they assembled against Moses and Aaron. That's what Israelites did. And um and I know in my own life,
00:06:22
fillingyouupwithhope
like i Because I still want this to be, right? I think as Christians, we all do. We want our first line of defense to be to pray.
00:06:37
fillingyouupwithhope
Like that's what so many of us are, what we desire to do, but then these situations happen and we go back to our flesh way of coping sometimes instead of doing what God calls us to do, pray without ceasing. And I know that's happened to me before, like being caught off guard, being hurt by someone, and just responding back, right? and And that's simple of me. Like before I respond, I need to be turning to God and seeing

Turning to God in Response to Situations

00:07:21
fillingyouupwithhope
how he wants me to respond, what he wants me to do. um so so such So such a reminder of that. so But what do Moses and Aaron do? right They're caught off guard. Like like I said, like so many of us get caught off guard. And they they go and they they go away from the people, which is reminder of what we need to do, right? They go away from the people. They fall on their face. They are turning to God and God speaks to them, right? And and Jesus does this, right? In Luke 6, 12, like going off and and being with God. and we And sometimes we need that. We need to be like, hold on one second. So, you know, we get caught up guard.
00:08:21
fillingyouupwithhope
and we feel like we just need to react. But we do have some control, right? We can say, hold up, you know, we can take the time to be alone with God before we respond. And it can be just to taking a moment then, or like we can learn from Moses, Aaron, Jesus, our Lord and Savior, and taking that time to go away go away, right, be by ourselves with God, and see what he is guiding us to do.

God Provides in the Desert

00:08:58
fillingyouupwithhope
And ah and then, but but God is amazing, right, going back to Numbers, and he's gonna provide for the Israelites. They're thirsty, right, in the desert, and and he gives Moses specific instructions. He says,
00:09:19
fillingyouupwithhope
and In their presence, tell the rock to provide water. You will reproduce water from the rock for them and allow the community and their animals to drink. This is Numbers 20 in verse 8. So he's, they take the time to turn to God, be along with that, and God gives them specific instructions. And it's a reminder that we need to follow the
00:09:50
fillingyouupwithhope
what he tells us to do, right? he Because Moses doesn't exactly follow what God tells us him to do, and it has consequences, right? We need to trust God so much that we do the things that he tells us to do, and we do it how he tells us to do it, right?
00:10:18
fillingyouupwithhope
um
00:10:21
fillingyouupwithhope
So now this is verse 9 and verse 20. Moses took the staff from the Lord's presence as the Lord had commanded him. Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly before the rock. He said to them, listen you rebels, should we produce water from the rock for you? Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice. One out flooded water so that the community and their animals could drink.
00:10:51
fillingyouupwithhope
so God had given given him those instructions for a reason,

Consequences for Moses and Aaron

00:10:57
fillingyouupwithhope
right? Of say to the rock, right? Tell the rock to provide water. That was God's instruction. It was not to strike the rock. So and we need to be listening to God and following what he says, right?
00:11:18
fillingyouupwithhope
um The Lord says to Moses and Aaron because you didn't trust me to show my holiness before the Israelites Like maybe they didn't think that God could make it flow without hitting it with the staff, right? because Because you didn't trust me to show my holiness before the Israelites you will not bring this assembly into the land that I'm giving them So they are not going to be able to go, Moses and Aaron will not be able to go to the Holy Land. And um it's a reminder of how, how deep, how deep our trust in God needs to be. So Moses and Aaron like didn't fully trust or believe God. And I just made me wonder, like, what are we not trusting God about?
00:12:17
fillingyouupwithhope
Um, like what are we putting in our own hands? Cause they kind of put it in their own hands, right? Cause they did it their way by hitting it with the rock instead of how God wanted them to do it. So what, what are we, and often we like are worrying, complaining, like trying to control things because we're keeping them in our hands instead of putting them in God's hands.
00:12:44
fillingyouupwithhope
When we put them in God's hands, there's a peace because we can trust that he is that he's got it, that he's going to take care of it. So there doesn't have to be the worrying, complaining, because we know, we trust. So um like so if we're living in fear,
00:13:13
fillingyouupwithhope
in our lives or anxiety, like, are we trusting? Are we trusting deep down that but God has got me?

Trusting God vs. Self-Reliance

00:13:24
fillingyouupwithhope
And so it's just a reminder of how deep that trust needs to be. And God wants us to to follow Him and do what He tells us to. And there's Another reminder of this right after that, Balam in Numbers 22. He's another example of this. God is showing us this message. The Israelites, they're scaring the communities around them because they're they're very numerous because there're very numerous. There's a lot of them. And so the the the king of Moab,
00:14:07
fillingyouupwithhope
It is scared, and he wants Balaam to curse the Israelites. So the Moabites can destroy the Israelites. That's what he wants. And this is in like Numbers 22. And this is Numbers 22.6.
00:14:34
fillingyouupwithhope
um This is how Balam responds right when the king is asking him to do this. For I know that whoever you bless is blessed and whoever you curse is cursed. And I take that back. That's what the king that's what the king says to Balam. He thinks that Balam is kind of like God. right For I know that whoever you bless is blessed and whoever you curse is cursed. He thinks that Balam has that power.
00:15:03
fillingyouupwithhope
and that he can affect the Israelites and that it will help his people, right? And so he's kind of confused, belong with God, right? And who who in our lives do we give that power to, right?
00:15:20
fillingyouupwithhope
um Because God is the one with that power. and God goes and he talks to Balam and says don't curse don't curse these people don't curse the Israelites they are blessed and Balam has courage and he because of God and he goes to the leaders and says I can't I can't go with you because I can't I can't curse the Israelites like I know the power of God and so I
00:15:55
fillingyouupwithhope
This is in Numbers 22, 18. And the so, Baloch is the king. If Baloch were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I wouldn't be able to do anything smaller, great, or break the command of the Lord my God. So, he knows that he needs to follow God, and he knows that that God is who's powerful, like not not him, right? That God who is is that powerful. And, but even though that happens, so that happens, and God came to belong, this is, sorry, this is Numbers 2220. God came to belong in the night and said to him, if the men have come to summon you, arise and go with them.
00:16:51
fillingyouupwithhope
But you must only do what I tell you to do. So he's supposed to only go if the men come and summon him. If the king's men come and summon him. does But Balam do that? No. Balam arose in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went off with the officials. He didn't wait. He didn't wait. And God became angry because He didn't, like it there's kind of two messages in this podcast. There's trust and there's turning to God first, right? And following what he says. And again, like the law does not do what God told him to do. He put, he did it, um he kind of put it into his own hands.
00:17:48
fillingyouupwithhope
and just went, awoke, and rode off when that's not what God told him to do. And like how often do we just face things and just do it our way? Like all the time, right? We just do it in flesh, do it our way, do it our way, and we aren't turning to God. And we're missing we're missing our purpose. We're missing what he is calling us to do.

Continuous Prayer for Guidance

00:18:15
fillingyouupwithhope
and And we're not like believing and trusting Him um because we aren't turning to Him. And there's a reason why it says, pray without ceasing. Like throughout our day, we need to do that so we can have His guidance, not our fleshly guidance. Like, and just asking Him, like, is this what you want me to do? And being still and listening to Him.
00:18:44
fillingyouupwithhope
so we don't just do things.
00:18:49
fillingyouupwithhope
But doing this, like turning to God first and following Him as He tells us to do, it takes trust. And so many times when we've been hurt by people, like we don't have that trust. And We think that we're going to be let down and we have to do it our way. But we really need to know that his way is always better. His way is always better.
00:19:23
fillingyouupwithhope
um And like trusting that his ways are best and that he has good plans for you and he um is not going to hurt you the way that people have hurt you.
00:19:41
fillingyouupwithhope
that he is different and that we but we can trust him. Because it doesn't work when we put a wall up and just don't let people in. We aren't following him. um you know He guides us and shows us what to do. right And maybe there is some relationships that he's guiding you like to have boundaries with. right but We need to make sure that we're letting him protect us instead of trying to protect ourselves and putting up walls that and he isn't calling us to do, right? We have to see what what he wants for us and he will show you, right? That he has good plans for you and like trusting deep down that he loves you.
00:20:38
fillingyouupwithhope
So no matter what um trust issues you have in your life, right? And like he can make it better. And one thing that I do a lot in therapy with people is thought records that I've talked about in this podcast a lot, right? It's um a CBT thing where You write down the issue, you write down the negative thoughts and the feelings attached to it, what you do when you have those feelings, and then you write down positive thoughts. And you we can so do this with trust issues, right? And we can find things to tell ourselves that are from God that can help us with our trust issues. And there's some verses that I thought would
00:21:36
fillingyouupwithhope
really help with that. 1 Peter 8, although you've never seen him, you love him. Even though you don't see him now, you trust him. And so rejoiced with a glorious joy that is too much for words, because we have that trust. Now, how can we trust him? Well, David trusted God, right? We're gonna go to Psalm 56.

David's Trust in God

00:22:02
fillingyouupwithhope
David is being chased but people by enemies that want to kill him. But deep down, ah he has deep trust for God. And if David being chased and people wanted to murder him, right, can have that trust, we can too. And so taking ah taking in this, um I'm going to start in, and I recommend you read all of Psalm 56. It's beautiful.
00:22:34
fillingyouupwithhope
We're gonna start in verse three. Whenever I'm afraid, I put my trust in you, in God who whose word I praise. I trust in God, I won't be afraid. What can mere flesh do to me? Right? We try and protect ourselves from being hurt. But what we need to know that we have an eternal life with God, which, how much joy is that, right? With whom you have accepted into our heart,
00:23:05
fillingyouupwithhope
And so we can trust him and do the things that he wants us to do. What can mere flesh do to me? Going down to verse 11, I trust in God. I won't be afraid. What can anyone do to me? So he's repeating that again, that I don't need to be afraid. I don't need to be afraid.
00:23:33
fillingyouupwithhope
um What can anyone do to me? Because I have the most powerful God. I will fulfill my promises to you, God. I will present Thanksgiving offerings offerings to you because you have saved my life from death. Saved my feet from stumbling so that I can walk before God in the light of life. That's what he's done for us. He has saved us.

God as a Refuge and Conclusion

00:24:00
fillingyouupwithhope
and given us hope so we can trust Him. So I hope that you take this in and whenever you're going through and that you can trust God, that He is safe. He's a refuge. We can rest in His mighty shadow. The shadow is all mighty. And He'll keep you safe. And when you repent and have Jesus in your heart, you have ah let you have life with God and it does not get better than that.

Closing Wishes of Joy and Hope

00:24:40
fillingyouupwithhope
So um so I hope that this gave you some hope and that your week has so much joy in it and I can't wait to go through more of this with you next week.
00:24:55
fillingyouupwithhope
hey
