Speaker: I'm Trish Tobey with W.A.R.C. reporting to you live from Westchester, New York, where there appears to be some sort of mutant menace on the loose.
Speaker: Hey, everybody, I'm Matt Orkamp. And I'm Pat Reber. And say it with us, Brent. well Welcome to Mutant Menace.
Speaker: Patrick. Matt. Hi. No, hang on. Before you get into that. I didn't. I don't. I haven't. or No, before you start. Before you even go there. I didn't.
Speaker: It's time for the final episode i did of our brand new podcast, Kilowog Hours. Oh no, I haven't watched. it i didn Oh, no, Matt. Luckily, we do a spoiler free. So you should be good to go. Is the is the show over? Was that the season finale? Yes. Yes. Season finale debut. Actually, the episode that we just released would have come out after the season finale.
Speaker: So our release schedule has gotten a little confused. But did our YouTube commenter email us about it? No, not yet. Fuck. Okay. All right. so tell tell me about We yeah we wait patiently. How are you feeling about how about about the Lanterns finale? Pretty good. I'll tell you the things I was excited about ah continued to be exciting. they Really? really ah this is So it's a thing that I may have talked about this before, but a thing that I think Damon Lindelof does really well, who was ah one of the the head writer showrunners,
Speaker: um is every thread that gets put out there does get closed. There's no, there's nothing unexplained. Like every little detail has its closure by the end of it. And it,
Speaker: I love the story choices. I think it's I'm actually really interested to see how you feel about the ending, because I think it's really good, but it is not the ending that I expected at all.
Speaker: What if they just do? And i look, I I'm only in season four of The Sopranos, but. Everybody knows the ending of The Sopranos. It has been widely spoiled for the whole world.
Speaker: What if the ending of Lanterns was just the ending of The Sopranos again? It's it's just like Jon Stewart sitting in the front seat of the car or whatever. And then it just fades to black and plays. i don't know. wait What's an analogous song to Don't Stop Believing?
Speaker: uh leila by eric clapton plays leila
Speaker: um do you does it have is it self-contained or does it have ah it sets itself up for a sequel if that's what you're asking like a season two and of which is already in development it does it But does it do you think it has implications for like the DC movies, or do you think it's going to be largely separate?
Speaker: Huh. but Yeah, i think going to kind I mean, does Guy Gardner just show up and explode into a bunch of fleshy bits? And then I think it's like, oh, well, we can't put him in the movies anymore. No, Guy Gardner does make one final appearance, though. Oh, okay. That's the spoiler that we're always willing to give. He comes back. ah Nathan Fillion is so good as Guy Gardner. It is fucking incredible.
Speaker: His appearance in, what was it, episode six or episode seven or something was so good because it was that hilarious natian Nathan Fillion thing, but it was like vaguely threatening, too. And you're like, yeah this is fucking who Guy Gardner is. Like, a guy who is...
Speaker: Who has scary anger problems, but is a complete doofus. Yes. Yeah. like yeah Like you can laugh at him, but you want to do it quietly because this is a guy who will send you to the hospital in like a fit of rage.
Speaker: Yeah, he fully embodies that and has another ah conversation with Jon Stewart's very strong personality. And it's it's everything that you want it to be. That's awesome.
Speaker: I can't freaking wait. I've had a busy week and I haven't been able to watch my Kilowoggi show. Matt, you got to watch it after we after we take four hours tonight to to talk about... to talk about well Well, we'll get to it. We don't want to get to it. This is still kill the long hours. um So, yeah, um ah what I'm hoping is that season two will be just as psychologically complex and suspenseful and
Speaker: deep But full of all the weird aliens, like the like the the planet and the the bug and Kilowog and the squirrel. Like, what if that's how the next one was? Like, they do the same level of high drama, but in, like... But everybody's got a funny-shaped head. Yeah, in, like, weird space stations and shit. Yeah.
Speaker: No, it's i to to answer your question. I do think our John Stewart Green Lantern will make an appearance in other DC stuff. If that universe continues to expand. I think that like that is, but it's not going to be the character that we met in lanterns. Like it'll, it'll have the and the exact same story, but it'll be, it'll be like going from,
Speaker: Thor Ragnarok to Avengers Infinity War. Okay, so you're saying... Thor was just like... He was in a place where they had a very well-defined character that the actor understood, and they're going to kind of plug that in into a much...
Speaker: light years So you're saying this is a combination of he emerges from this series change and other writers might not understand the complexity of the character. like like Yes. And it's just like a combination of the it's not going to fit the tone of anything else. Yes. yeah like They are. They aren't going to have two like independent series. Like because the Penguin series already exists in that series.
Speaker: Or outside of that universe, but under the DC umbrella. So weird. So weird. This DC thing is so fucking weird, man. It's so strange. And listen, James Gunn is somebody that I've loved since he was like an indie film director and have enjoyed seeing the success he's gotten because he hasn't lost that like weird weirdness that really defined his movies um he had kind of rough go of it and so it's great to see him at the top but the fact that he was given a superhero movie universe to build when we're at the end of the superhero movie renaissance
Speaker: ah And was already committed to having a property that doesn't live in that universe still live under that umbrella with the Batman. It's just you're not set up for success. I don't see yeah how this has even made it this far. So maybe it'll continue to.
Speaker: To bloom. Yeah, I mean, it's ah it's so far since James Gunn has taken over, it's been a combination of good and mediocre movies. Yes. mostly Mostly B plus A minus level properties, except for Lanterns, which is A double, triple, quadruple plus.
Speaker: Do you think we're going to see Alan Scott? Who? Pat, what are we talking about? Kilowog Hours is over. What are we talking about today? That's it. Kilowog Hours is over, over.
Speaker: It's over, except for I'll probably, when I watch the next episode, I'll probably. um So ah what are we talking about today? Today, matt much like last week, we were talking about super scary guy.
Speaker: Ooh, spooky. This is someone that... Spooky month. I'm gonna act... We didn't even do this on purpose. Holy shit, Patrick. shit, Matt. We didn't even do this on purpose, but this is the scariest fucking month in all of X-Men comics. This is so... This is great.
Speaker: Yeah, because that we've made no secret. Especially if you're part of the Patreon. Next episode is fucking the mutant massacre. Yeah, that's true. That's going to be scary.
Speaker: ah But this, would to slow down, Matt. We're not there yet. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Today we're talking about Sabretooth. Somebody that, i imagine everybody must know who this guy is, right? You mean Zabu.
Speaker: Furry. do you remember Fang?
Speaker: Kind of another attempt at Fang. Wow! the big, scary, kind of fur coat-lined, savage man that we know as Wolverine's, one of Wolverine's arch-nemeses. He's now. He has a little origin story that that we uncovered. he's been He's been around for a while, and we just haven't really seen him.
Speaker: Pat. Yeah. Sabretooth, as we'll find out, debuts in May 1977. When do you think, just using your memory best you can, when do you think Fang debuted? Ooh.
Speaker: Remember, Fang is basically wearing a saber tooth costume. Yeah, yeah. That Wolverine steals for like two issues. Yeah. Or one issue in an annual or something.
Speaker: fang Fang was part of one of the sagas.
Speaker: God, it must have been late 70s. Was it in 1977? It was in 1977. It was November 1977. Six months later, Dave Cockrum is like, I've got my own saber tooth.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you know I might as well say this now. There's no point in in in in saving it because this is the saber tooth episode. At the time, John Byrne and Chris Claremont were already working together on Iron Fist, as we'll see.
Speaker: They were already talking about collaborating on... um X-Men. No, hold on. I just realized they weren't talking about collaborating. Fuck, let me step back one second further because I know this this anecdote, but I've mistaken it.
Speaker: Because remember, Iron Fist 14... is where Sabretooth debuts. yeah Iron Fist 15 is where Wolverine meets Iron Fist.
Speaker: Yes. Iron Fist 15 is the first time John Byrne draws Wolverine, and Wolverine is out of costume. so Chris Claremont is working with John Byrne at that time on making a, on on what Wolverine looks like out of costume. Making person out of Wolverine.
Speaker: In the meantime, Dave Cockrum randomly draws Wolverine out of costume. And it looks different. It's a different Wolverine. Yeah, yeah. And he debuts early 1977.
Speaker: John Byrne is annoyed. And remember, as we remember from back then, Dave Cockrum and John Byrne have a rivalry. Yeah, and John Byrne is annoyed by everything. John Byrne's annoyed, but he uses his drawing of Wolverine's face for Sabretooth.
Speaker: Oh. So what happens is John Byrne starts to make up a Wolverine face. Dave Cockrum beats him to it, draws a Wolverine face. So John Byrne and Chris Claremont invent Sabretooth.
Speaker: A few months later, Dave Cockrum takes Sabretooth's outfit, puts bones on it, and gives it to Fang. And then gives it Wolverine. And gives it to Wolverine. Later that issue. With his mask off!
Speaker: That is so fucking funny! God, Art War. They're just taking shots back and forth. it's Stitching together the story and knowing the little rivalry they had. Holy shit, what a story! Incredible. What more background on Sabretooth you need?
Speaker: Oh, Matt. Welcome to Pat's email corner. We have such a we're still doing this big pile of emails to sort through here. The majority of them being from one person.
Speaker: I'm going to say let's let's let's try and get as many emails done in Pat's email corner this week as we can. Because next week we have like 12 issues of comics to get through when we do the entire Mutant Massacre.
Speaker: we might want to have as few segments as possible in that episode. We might just want to fucking roll in. But like okay, so let's see how much we can get through. Yeah, yeah Well, let's kick it off with... ah yeah is Someone who hasn't written it in a while, but ah has written in several times in the past, Matt, to the point where i'm not sure if we connected him as the same person between emails, but listener Abe.
Speaker: Abe! i do not remember if we... gave abe a nickname did we give abe a nickname did we give mutant menace pod at gmail.com please folks help us remember have we given a nickname give abe a nickname he deserves one he was he was an early emailer he reassured me that getting into stardew valley and getting my wife into stardew valley wouldn't ruin our marriage and it's still going still going strong this okay six months later um farmer abe
Speaker: Farmer Abe may have been what we came up with. Let me propose this. Babe.
Speaker: i think I think that is going to be one of those rare these rare nicknames where it depends ends on the opting in of the email. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker: Abe, if you're okay with this. I don't know that we could just unilaterally decide to call somebody Babe. but But hey, if we're allowed to call him babe, he's babe to us. Yeah, let us know.
Speaker: ah Anyway, babe says, hey, Pat. Hey, Matt. Hey, Matt. Tell Pat. What the fuck? I know. it's yeah i'm all I'm all out of sorts here.
Speaker: Sorry, it's been a while since I've swung by the podcast. Kind of got kind of got caught up in the whole dungeon crawler Carl craze, which led to falling into the world of he who fights with monster series, which is better and worse.
Speaker: I don't know it. My first episode back was when you congratulated me on six years of gamer marriage, which was so touching. So thanks. Can you believe that was like that was like six months ago?
Speaker: yeah He says, I'm not caught up yet, but i I do need to weigh in on the drowning in Pilk versus Mayo. We're back on Pilk. Pilk. According to the rules of the poll, which states that you've got to go out, I would absolutely choose Pilk because it would be way faster.
Speaker: As for the X-Man that I would choose to take with me, that's easy. That's easy. Angel, because he's so useless and he gets the bat of Mayo. So you drown in Pilk, Angel drowns in Mayo. Because you remember there's another option to hold hands with the X-Man while you both die in the same.
Speaker: we Abe, if you are just getting to Pilk versus Mayo, buckle up because you have like two or three months of Pilk talk ahead of you.
Speaker: Abe then proceeded to write in one, two, three, four, five, six more times. He signs off Odd Abe, which I don't know if that's a nickname Abe gave himself or did we call him Odd Abe?
Speaker: Like Abe's Odyssey? Odd Abe? Odd Abe from a ah Abe's Odyssey? That does sound also like something we would come up with. So let's take credit for it.
Speaker: oh i do we like that better than Babe? i kind like i do really like Babe. Abe, let us know. Abe, let us know. Are you Odd Abe or are you Babe?
Speaker: Just some highlights from the several, several emails that he sent us in the last week. First, when you mixed up Malthusian and Markovian, it's possible you were thinking of Markov chains. I believe that one's for you, Matt, because I don't know. why Everyone's always getting on my dingus about Mark, Mark, Malthusian versus Markovian.
Speaker: ah The best road trip snacks are, of course, Gardetto's and jerky. you just yeah Just Gardetto's like I get those are like the rye chips, right? And I get those in a thing of snack mix. And I love them. Like I'll, I'll snipe them out of the snack mix. I don't know if I could just eat a bag of Gardettos.
Speaker: Yeah, no, you need to have that, that, those, that you need to have it interrupted by, uh, whatever other weird, weird seasoned pretzels or whatever. In episode 64, he's moving pretty fast. In episode 64, you requested someone write in and use anodyne in a sentence to describe Tylenol.
Speaker: He says Tylenol is a common anodyne for the masses. Yeah. You're being obtuse. You knew we didn't mean the noun form of anodyne. You know we meant anodyne. what But why did we ask them to use Tylenol and anodyne in a sentence? In episode 62, when we asked if the episode sucks, he concluded it does not.
Speaker: Thank you. I believe we asked, but he let us know that the word is microscopy.
Speaker: And then finally for Secret Wars 2, he says, don't cry because it happened. Laugh because it's over. When people do this, when people catch up and email us a bunch of shit at once, do you do you sit back and go, we are so funny? Or do you sit back and go, we are so fucking stupid. This is so funny. What is wrong with us?
Speaker: it is Once you put some time between it, you're and Yeah, we we I tend to ask the same question that Abe answered for episode 62. Does this suck?
Speaker: But hey, they keep coming back. Yeah. Big name up next, Matt. It is pete Pete!
Speaker: Pete needs no introduction, needs no nickname. Welcome. Pete, I'm reading your email. Is that not enough attention for you? guy Anyway, he titles ah this email Puffy Faffin. And if you remember, Matt, I know we're not supposed to talk about it, but we missed an episode.
Speaker: We missed a week. And instead of releasing an episode, you released. I know. I'm sorry. But it's just for the context here, i kind of have to. We released a few episodes of our Patreon exclusive podcast, Puffy Faffin.
Speaker: So Pete says, good night, gents. Yeah. I have to admit, I was originally disappointed when I didn't have- No, he's not listening anymore, Pat. No, he turned it off. We lost him.
Speaker: I have to admit, i was originally disappointed when I didn't have a new episode to listen to this week, but was happy to see you'd still shared something in the form of Puffy Faffin. That was super enjoyable and something I'm definitely going to listen to more of in the future. Obviously, I'm not a freeloading POS, so I am a paid subscriber to the Patreon.
Speaker: But I'd never listened to these shorts before, so thank you for throwing them up for us to sample. Yeah, i i i I love the feedback that we got about the Puffy Faffin unlock, the Patreon unlock of a couple Puffy Faffin episodes. It's been really positive, and ah thank you all for that. that's I mean, it's just me and Pat goofing off like we've done on stages and podcasts for fucking 12 years now. Yeah. yeah um And it's, it's really heartening that you guys enjoy it. So thank you.
Speaker: uh yeah i absolutely agree it is us just being dumb and it kind of goes into the void it's hard to get feedback on patreon stuff uh so yeah if people were like i i hate this so much then it would be like well what did we spend all that 12 years developing any of those skills for why did we do any of that So as usual, we hate responding to compliments, but we need the compliments.
Speaker: Yes, we need them. Let's talk to, thank you very much, Pete. You can go now. Thanks, Pete. Yeah. Back by popular demand, he says, it's Canadian Dan. Yay!
Speaker: He's back. We didn't scare him off. We didn't make too mad. Hey, Pat, could you please tell Matt that I am greatly touched by your kind words and concern for my welfare? I am doing quite well and have had a busy summer dealing with life in general, but know that I'm still working in the shadows waiting for the next Alpha Flight episode. There will be one more at some point when we record the ah annual bonus, right? He says, my wife is quite happy as well, which will no doubt disappoint Matt.
Speaker: Keep up the good work. You guys routinely make me laugh.
Speaker: my god. That is the funniest email. That is one of the funniest things I've ever heard. Wow. That is very good. Good job, Canadian. Very good. Thank you, can Canadian fan.
Speaker: All right, a couple more for you, Matt. Thank you to Canadian Dan. but Thanks, Canadian Dan. We're so glad to hear from you again. We're going to move on to Mikey Two Mails, who has both a non-X-Men email and an X-Men email this week. He says, hey, Pat. figure here Tell Matt I said I absolutely said welcome to Mutant Menace alongside you both when I heard the episode. It was a delight to hear my name said on the episode.
Speaker: Aw. Uh, laser tag is awesome. And I loved playing it as a key kids slash teenager slash young adult. Now that I'm pushing 40, I still think it would be fun to play. So I propose a mutant menace meetup at main event where I challenge all the other regular emails, emailers to come and choose a side, either team matter team Pat. And we do get out in the arena.
Speaker: Winner gets bragging rights and I will make badge buttons for the event. Newark, Delaware. nork delaware There is one in Newark, Delaware. Well, we're supposed to have, where are we supposed to have a meetup? The Kennett Square Mushroom Festival? Kennett Square Mushroom Festival. that's and Do they have laser tag there?
Speaker: do Or could we make laser tag happen there? Google, what is the closest laser tag? To us, not to you people. To Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
Speaker: It's going to be a main event in Newark, Delaware. It's Strikeforce laser tag in Westchester, Pennsylvania. o that's even closer to us, Matt.
Speaker: Let's get a party bus to take all of our fans, all the many fans who will show up to the Kennett Square Mushroom Festival in 2027. oh from the Mushroom Festival to from the Laser Tag in Westchester. Not from their homes to the Mushroom Festival.
Speaker: We're going all over the country. We're going all over the Midwest and Canada, folks. There was also a mention of what other nerd podcasts do you listen to? There was? Did we ask that?
Speaker: don't think so. Or is he is he just trying to get some plugs in? So I wanted to tell you I listen to so many podcasts that it may inflate the email section by 10 minutes if I list them all. But some of my toro some of my top are cool people who did cool stuff, Behind the Bastards, and Binary Break.
Speaker: I've heard of one of those. Episode 79, X-Men related email from Mikey2Mails. He says, Hey, Pat, tell Matt I said that Mojo was a great villain who was sadly underutilized in later years.
Speaker: Yeah, it's like we said, he's he's got these couple very scary appearances, and then he just becomes like a venue for the little X-Men. X-Men babies. X-babies.
Speaker: Well, I'm sorry that you opined on that, Matt, because he says, but there's no time for that now. fuck I was curious if you all had an arc of the X-Men that you thought would make an absolutely fantastic 10 to 14 episode TV series. Personally, I think House of M would be phenomenal phenomenal to see on screen.
Speaker: Interesting. Yeah. ah I mean, any storyline from Grant Morrison's new X-Men, obviously, but that feels like the very obvious answer. I think... Well...
Speaker: Because a lot of the big events from the Claremont years and even from the early Lobdell years rely so much on what's come before. right like it's It's like, if you're not following it, these don't have... If you weren't already following it, these might not have the impact.
Speaker: um So, I'd say... so Utopia. Oh, yeah. Yeah. That is a good one.
Speaker: So the the base here has to be that we understand the characters we're seeing to enough of a degree to understand the impact these events would have on them, right? So if we're talking utopia, we know what the mutant issue is and why they want to form sort of like a separatist.
Speaker: Right. Right, but if you don't have to yeah you don't have to go through all of, like, secret invasion and dark rain to have Utopia. That makes it better, but you could do a TV series about, like,
Speaker: Something about the U.S. s has become more hostile to mutants. And instead of going underground this time, they're like, fine, we fucking separate. We're your separatist nation and come after us if you dare, you fuckers. Right? Like, that is that is the attitude of that. And that rules.
Speaker: um It doesn't have to be Norman Osborn. Yes. Yeah. You would remove Norman Osborn and just make him, like, the government. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. um But then but there's so much stuff that would like Second Coming and Messiah Complex, two of my favorite X-Men stories of all time, especially Second Coming, doesn't work. Gross.
Speaker: Messiah Complex doesn't work without decimation. Right. And Second Coming doesn't work without Messiah Complex and the Cable and Hope miniseries. So like, fuck it. Right. Like, you can't. What the fuck are you talking about?
Speaker: What? How about you? What do you feel? i I think, and I've said this before, i think the Brood Saga needs a good adaptation. And I think that you... um I mean, that's like, what, four or five issues? And maybe if you extend it into the fallout to the new mutants, you could stretch it. But I think you could really like god pull out the drama of it and the... like
Speaker: The sort of secret invasion style, the way that you don't know. It could be almost like a body snatcher series a sort of horror mystery that they work through until the big battle at the end.
Speaker: Okay. You don't like it? No, I love it What I'm thinking of, okay, so you you get to like episode so episode one, obviously, is is setting the stakes in the groundwork, right? Yeah, yeah. And then you send them to space, they meet the brood, et cetera, et cetera, right? You get the story underway.
Speaker: You get to episode like four or five, we cut back. To how the world has to get on with assuming the X-Men are dead, including the founding of the new mutants.
Speaker: Yeah. And then maybe even we follow, like maybe we leave the X-Men on a cliffhanger like maybe they're dead. We come back. It's the new mutants. Maybe the new mutants for two episodes. You go back to space Wolverine is still alive. X-Men are still here.
Speaker: Wolverine is still alive. He fights his way back. he And then then you start to see what's going on. And that's when you create this horror scenario, right?
Speaker: They're out in space. Who is a brood and who's not? We don't fucking know. And then you the culmination, right, is this is the culmination of this that that story where...
Speaker: um It's like, okay, I guess we go all kill ourselves. That's the only option is we do a final ah Hail Mary attack on the brood and we'll all die in this.
Speaker: They escape. It ends the way it ends, right? And then the final episode, maybe even the final two episodes, are them returning and finding out, oh shit, Professor X is the brood queen and the finale is...
Speaker: Them and the new mutants who they have just met. Yeah. And just learned of the existence of in the past, say, two episodes. Teaming up to fight Professor X.
Speaker: So good. Yeah. That would be great. Start rolling in the trucks of money and we'll start putting the script together. Yeah. I think we already did just start putting the script together.
Speaker: One more email, Matt. It is from Brent. Who is very active on the discord emails us once in a while as well. And when he does, we read those emails. So Brent says.
Speaker: Brent once in a while. I don't know if you can have a covered bridge become a super through the use of gamma radiation. We're pretty sure you can, but I think so. But, but but he says, I do know that there's a super named Danny, the street in the DC universe, who's just an actual sentient street.
Speaker: And then he provides a link to the wiki. That's a Grant Morrison creation from checks out. from the his Doom Patrol series. um Danny, the street was like a genderqueer street um that had some really fucking fantastic moments in Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol, which, if you haven't read, is incredible. an incredible series. yeah I haven't. Maybe I will.
Speaker: You should. You should. I did.
Speaker: Oh, Pat, did you do anything X-Men related this week? This week, Matt, I have a problem that I imagine a few of our friends on the X-Men go through. i have visor hair. Can you see it? i have to wear a visor at work now. So like it it kind of presses just a strip of my hair down to my head.
Speaker: Okay. And so I have that going on. I don't love it. But what am i going to do? Shower after work? After work? And that's X-Men related?
Speaker: So many X-Men wear strange head accessories, and I'm sure they have to deal with this all the time. Well, I'm sorry for what you're going through. That sounds tough. Thank you.
Speaker: What about you, Matt? Did you do anything X-Men related this week? ah Yeah, I did. You know, I am... i It's been a really long time since I've had to hire somebody new at work, like hire somebody new in my department. And I had to hire somebody new.
Speaker: And I am training this person. And it's exhausting. It's exhausting to train somebody. it's I'm so tired. I'm so tired. I've done so much talking this week.
Speaker: Boy, we... ah we got to We got to start steering away from I'm like the X-Men because I'm tired. yeah all right, Pat.
Speaker: Why don't we talk about the one X-Men villain who's never tired? Oh, a wake man. Oh, sorry. ah Do you want to tell me?
Speaker: About a little, but why don't we take a little trip back in time? on' we so Let's hop, skip, and then jump back in time. to Do you remember that time that Iron Fist went to his girlfriend Misty Knight's apartment and Wolverine was there and they got in a big fight? Yes. Yeah, of course.
Speaker: Let's talk about what happened the month before that. The month before that. Because remember, Iron Fist iron fist said, this guy's exactly like Sabretooth.
Speaker: Oh, so yeah, we are we are one month before that meeting in Iron Fist number 14. Snowfire.
Speaker: snowfire ah Okay, this is just, that's such a Claremont title. yes Stop it. It's blowing my mind, man. Snowfire War Hunt.
Speaker: Chris Claremont, author. John Byrne, artist. Dan Green, inker. Annette Kowecki, letterer. Janice Cohen, colorist. And this is refreshing. Archie Goodwin, editor.
Speaker: Aw, Archie. This must have been during that three weeks that he was editor. ah Release date May 3rd, 1977. Matt, literally my negative eighth birthday.
Speaker: Cover date August 1977. Chased by mercenaries, shot and left to freeze in the Canadian Rockies. Iron Fist and Colleen Wing take shelter in a run down weather shack.
Speaker: It's a weather shack. I mean, I can guess what a weather shack is based on... based on ah Oh, is it a sex thing?
Speaker: So this issue starts with a... Claremontism. I think this is the, what, uh, eight, seventh, eighth time we've seen this yeah in a Claremont comic. yeah It starts with a bullet creased my skull. Creased my skull.
Speaker: It just, it zinged me in the head. Bullets are always doing that, man. You ever notice how bullets are always doing that? Here's the thing is they are running away from the shooter.
Speaker: There is no reason for it to have glanced off of her head. Why not shoot her in the arm? Like, it's just has to be a shot that makes her fall over, but doesn't kill her. like but yeah have to be Why did she have to get shot in the head? yeah Why did she? Why did she have to get shot in this?
Speaker: the The most unbelievable kind of way. This is, if I recall correctly, in the mid 70s, we were shouting at Chris Claremont through this podcast to just simplify it, man.
Speaker: ah They go into a deep Zen trance to keep from freezing and flashback to the last few days. Jesus Christ. Now everything from here on out is narration in the second person.
Speaker: And I'm not going to try to recreate that with this recap, but just know that every, yeah everything Iron Fist does. The narration says you punch this man in the face.
Speaker: Like you're reading a choose-your-own-adventure story.
Speaker: With Misty Night Away, Colleen Wing was forced to call Danny Rand to accompany her on a security job in Calgary, Alberta for the lawyer... You were supposed to call. What? You were forced to call Colleen Wing.
Speaker: No, Colleen Wing was forced to call me. Oh, damn it. So they're doing this for the lawyer, Jaron Hogarth, Matt. Tell me about Jaron Hogarth. Jaron Hogarth.
Speaker: Jaron Hogarth is like Danny Rand, the businessman, not the Iron Fist, but the the billionaire side. It's like his his left hand or his right hand man.
Speaker: His left hand man would be the evil one. Jaron Hogarth is like... Like a guy that manages his money, helps run his businesses while he's off doing superhero stuff. And like, he's the one that when you see the heroes for hire have an office, it's because Jaron went out and found them in office.
Speaker: when did we last see Jaron Hogarth in this podcast? It was, it was once, right? It was at least once we've seen him. And then we've also, I i remember various distinctly not seeing him when they were like, sorry, Hogarth's on vacation.
Speaker: And I was like, damn it. Was he managing Angel's money during the Champions or something? No, that doesn't sound right.
Speaker: OK, whatever. It doesn't matter. Fuck it. I don't you and don't give a hell. Indexing this podcast. I love Jaron Hogarth. Portrayed brilliantly by Carrie Ann Moss in the Netflix Marvel series.
Speaker: A little gender swap.
Speaker: When they arrived, though, they were ambushed by a bunch of masked mercenaries led by one large, garishly dressed blonde man named Sabretooth. Colleen knows him reputation. He's a lawless pirate willing to do anything for a price. What if he was a pirate? and turned down How different would the Marvel Universe be?
Speaker: in ire It wouldn't be a bad name for a pirate. I'm Sabretooth. I am Sabretooth. Oh my gosh. And read this dialogue with a, with a, in a pirate's voice. Greetings, Miss Wing, Mr. Red. We've been expecting you.
Speaker: Take them away and lock them up. play and it'll be here at first light. We'll be leaving then and taking these two and Hogarth with us. All right. I think we found our saber tooth voice.
Speaker: He um he says Bub to Bub. Ain't it the truth Bub? he said
Speaker: So in this instance, the target that he is after is Hogarth and he decides to take Danny and Colleen with him as a bonus. But not so fast, Sabretooth. Danny breaks free of his ropes, punching and kicking all the guards.
Speaker: He drops Sabretooth's razor-sharp claws while Colleen grabs a snowmobile and the two are off into the woods and were caught up to the present. That's where we started! And now her skull is creased and they're in a weather shack.
Speaker: Yes. Probably fucking. They're probably fucking. so No, they're in a deep zen trance, you pervert. That's what they gotta say for the comics. Ha ha ha! He's dating Misty Knight and she is single.
Speaker: They are staying warm in a shack with no insulation on it. In the middle of a blizzard. In a chaste Zen trance. The next morning, the mercenaries close in on the weather shack, but are punched and kicked.
Speaker: Colleen and Danny, who punched and kicked them, take their uniforms and their snow be snowmobiles and head back to Calgary. So somebody... on one of the creative teams said, well, Danny and Colleen would just leave these two henchmen out here to die.
Speaker: Like yeah if they take their uniforms and speed off, there's no way they survived. They're dying of of exposure. So they wrap them In something.
Speaker: Sleeping bags. Are those sleeping bags? That's what they say. They say they are. They're sleeping bags. I'll keep them warm until the Mounties check in on the shack. They're awfully snug for sleeping bags. And also they just leave them in a snow bank.
Speaker: so You're killing them. Yeah. I think we can assume these two guys are dead. this guy and This man and woman are dead. Had to be a man and woman, otherwise they wouldn't have been able to fit into the outfits. They wouldn't have been able to wear their outfits, yeah, yeah. They sneak back to Hogarth's chalet and split up with Iron Fist going after Sabretooth.
Speaker: But as Danny sneaks up on him, Sabretooth's enhanced senses alert him. This ain't Garrett. This ain't Garrett. This ain't Garrett. Classic Claremont. He's giving every henchman a first name, so... This one's Garrett. There's also a Cid.
Speaker: ah Very Wolverine coded from the, from the, from jump, right? Yes. Yeah. Down to the bub. If we weren't reading it in a pirate voice, these would be Wolverine lines.
Speaker: Maybe we should start reading Wolverine in a pirate voice. ah So Sabretooth tears through Danny's decoy uniform with his claws only to discover Danny's iron fist costume.
Speaker: He's fighting a damn superhero.
Speaker: It's a damn superhero. I'll stop fighting a damn superhero. You're right. I'm not going to stop. ah Danny quickly realizes this Sabretooth guy is fucking fast and seems to be enjoying this fight.
Speaker: But when Colleen's part of the plan creates a distraction, Sabretooth runs. What? Danny's confused. Sabretooth seems to be running right into a miles long expanse of snow.
Speaker: What? What could he be doing? That's what I'm saying. He realizes too late. Sabretooth was luring him into the sunrise, which reflects off the snow, causing him snow blindness.
Speaker: Sabretooth can navigate just fine, though. He's got built-in sunglasses, I guess. And slashes Iron Fist across the back. Danny notes that Sabretooth is all power and speed with no combat technique.
Speaker: Oh. In a fair fight, he'd whip this guy's whole ass, but now things are too close. Until Danny flashes back to the time he trained with a blindfold on. Ha ha ha!
Speaker: Is this every issue of Iron Fist? It's like, oh, i'm I'm losing this fight, but I remember the time that I wasn't losing a fight. And then... Sort of, but this does have a little more significance, which I can i can explain in a moment. Okay, please. um Suddenly, after remembering that he learned how to fight without his vision, the tables turn and Dany doesn't let up until Sabertooth is down.
Speaker: Oof. Danny wonders if if Sabretooth had had some martial arts training, could even the Iron Fist have beaten him? The end.
Speaker: Huh. Well. So. We're we're steering away from non X-Men and non Sabretooth details that aren't plot relevant here, right?
Speaker: Yes, but. But there's a moment. in this comic that we don't cover here, ah where Danny Rand is kind of like ambushed by some mysterious man. Who's, with who taunts him and says like, you don't deserve your power and I'm going to kill you. And like reveals that he knows things about Danny that people shouldn't be able to know unless they we're there at the iron fist ceremony or whatever. So he's like, who is this? And then it reveals that he's got a wingless dragon tattoo on his chest, much like Danny's Iron Fist tattoo of Shaolau the Undying, but without wings.
Speaker: This is the Steel Serpent. Matt, do you know who the Steel Serpent is? ah Now, the Steel Serpent is the alternate identity of Le Kung the Thunderer, who is the man that trained Danny from childhood, including this flashback that we see. So the reason that we actually see that or the significance of seeing that is.
Speaker: Readers don't know this yet. This is one of the first appearances of the Steel Serpent, but he goes on to become a major villain Iron iron fist lore and this is claremont hinting at like hey you already saw this guy in the beginning when a mysterious figure ambushed danny but this trainer in the flashback that we're showing you is the same out guy here's my question did you read claremont's iron fist run no
Speaker: Okay, I want to, because this is... Here's the here's here's my other thing about this, is like... this We've gotten to watch Chris Claremont grow up over the years yeah the last year, right? This is just his writing evolves. It gets better and better. He also makes mistakes and like learns from them, and we and we see him adapt. But this is that... like Raw talent Chris Claremont. That's where he's like unpolished, but he has all these crazy ideas and he really knows how to drive a story forward without sacrificing character. And it's really fun to see just like almost dumbed down Chris Claremont, but with the same strategy of telling stories.
Speaker: Right. I would read this. So this is the first appearance of Sabretooth. Yeah. Yeah. I don't think it's a coincidence that this is the very issue before Iron Fist meets Wolverine.
Speaker: Right. i think interesting I think that's done very intentionally um to suggest some sort of connection between the two. Interesting. Because we we're about 10 years later and andd and Wolverine has never met this guy.
Speaker: That is true. So how long do you think it is it is until... You might have read my note in the notes. I probably shouldn't have written written it in the notes where you could read it. But before you saw that, how long would you have guessed it was until we saw Sabretooth again? I would say that we would probably see him again pretty soon. This guy's scary and, like, compelling. Yeah.
Speaker: And they hint at he talks about his employer, so they hint at the fact that he's got a bigger story going on. ya Yeah, yeah. So, of course, he disappears from Marvel Comics for three years.
Speaker: They just don't really follow this thread. No, no. He disappears. um So do you want to cut to three years from now? Hang on. I want to talk about one really fun please moment where...
Speaker: ah Danny is snow blind. hasn't quite gotten his thoughts back together yet. He's fighting saber tooth and he's kind of panicking. And in his head, he goes through a whole monologue where he's saying like, Pain, have to concentrate, blanket out of my mind, have to hit back. But how? Sabertooth's all power and speed. If only had I had my eyes, this fight be no contest. As it is, i can only try. and then he takes a swing and out loud says, missed.
Speaker: So that's the only part Sabertooth catches. He sees a blind man stumbling around, throw a punch and just go, I yeah
Speaker: i love that's the thing we don't get enough of anymore is ah internal monologues that end with an external thought um that was a big John Byrne thing i Claremont did it sometimes but John Byrne did it all the fucking time yeah yeah ah and this is one of those examples that we do of another thing we don't get much anymore, which is Chris Claremont learning a word.
Speaker: and then, uh, ah overemphasizing that word yeah concept. So he learned the term snow blindness and was like, ah, I can use this in my comic book and somebody will make somebody else snow blind so they can't fight.
Speaker: But the other guy will have enhanced senses so he can fight. A little bit of an exaggeration of what snow blindness is, Chris. Yeah, it is not a temporary blindness.
Speaker: It's not just like a five-minute spell of blindness. Yeah, it's not like, ah, he casts snow blindness on me.
Speaker: ah ah um All right, so let's cut three years into the future, Pat. let's Hey, Matt, let's flash forward. And i'm I'm going to tell you a little bit.
Speaker: about So Iron Fist, the series, has ended. m At the same time, there's ah there's a ah sort of blaxploitation comic book called Power Man. Yes. i think it's called Luke Cage Hero for a Hire, then it's called hero for higherre than it's called Power Man, right? i Initially, Luke Cage Power Man.
Speaker: then Luke Cage, hero for hire. for There was a period of time where Luke Cage was the hero for hire. Yeah, and then Danny Rand joined him.
Speaker: Yeah. So anyway, eventually, yes, Danny Rand ah joins the title, and it becomes Power Man and Iron Fist.
Speaker: And this is Power Man and Iron Fist number 66, The Jade Tiger. Written by Mary Jo Duffy, who i think we've only seen a short story from, right?
Speaker: I think we've seen her a couple of times since. Because I think we've said that exact same thing before. Okay. Cary Gamble is the penciler. Ricardo Villamonte is the inker. Jim Novak's the letterer. Glynis is the colorist. Dennis O'Neill is the editor. And William Howard Taft, 1857-1930, is the Taft? date, 1980. Okay.
Speaker: september sixteenth nineteen eighty cover date december nineteen eighty So, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, yeah broken in they've broken into a warehouse full of stolen art in order to steal back a jade tiger for their employer.
Speaker: Things go pear-shaped, though, as the lights flick on and a bunch of armed goons catch them in the act. Colleen and Misty tear through these dudes like paper until they run into the head enforcers, professional assassins, Constrictor, and Sabretooth.
Speaker: i First of all... Okay. We've got a lot of characters to talk about here. Goddamn, I love the Daughters of the Dragon, which is the Misty Knight and Colleen Wing team up. It's not the name of their, like, organization. i don't know why they're called Daughters of the Dragon, but the two Yeah, it's called, like, Nightwing Reclamations or something. Yeah, yeah. Which is... the it Curious. Are you allowed to call things Nightwing?
Speaker: ah But... So are just two incredible fighters, right? She is a trained to ninja assassin. or sorry Colleen Wing is a trained ninja assassin assassin. Misty Knight has a bionic arm and has been trained by Danny Rand. like They ah kick ass.
Speaker: At this point, she's dating Danny Rand, too. At this point, where Misty Knight is dating Danny Rand. ah They also always just, like, blow through piles of dudes with guns. There's always a few panels... Of them just in these extreme action shots while dudes in suits just fly in every direction. Or sometimes it's guys in ninja costumes or whatever. They are just like flying off panel because the two of them are kicking such ass. And every time I see that, it gets me riled up. i'm like, yes, they're here.
Speaker: so then get very excited. Then we see Sabretooth, who is apparently now just a goon for hire. And his best buddy is the Constrictor.
Speaker: Constrictor. which is so Yeah. A play on like the boa constrictor, I guess. I guess, but he was never like he was never like a member of the Serpent Squad or the Serpent Society or whatever. He's just his own guy. um and he's pretty obscure at this point. This is like his fourth appearance ever.
Speaker: He's pretty obscure at this point. Yeah, still. Yeah, was in Hulk story, a Captain America story, an Iron Man story, and then he was in this. Okay. So they were trying to make him a thing.
Speaker: I guess, but that is over the course of three years. He also debuted in 1977, right around the time of Sabretooth's debut. Ooh.
Speaker: Okay. So these are two new-ish guys. These are two guys that were new in 1977 and then kind of forgotten for a little bit. Yeah.
Speaker: So this is not a cute bromance. They both are just dicks. They're just dicks. I mean, Sabretooth immediately comes out and says a ah anti-Asian slur about Colleen Wings. Yes.
Speaker: Yeah. What the hell, man? Yeah. Yeah. We accepted you for ah being a cold-blooded, heartless murderer. But a racist? racist?
Speaker: um So Misty struggles with Sabretooth while Constrictor extends two long tentacles of adamantium from his forearms. Also, all the rage and and Marvel Comics at this moment. Yeah, ah yeah yeah. Everybody's got adamantium something.
Speaker: He whips Colleen with one and then uses the other to engage in electromagnetic lock on the on the art vault. It slowly pulls shut and also pulls Misty's metal arm because yup magnets magnets ah and locks her in the vault. This was neither intended nor noticed by Constrictor. They just say, I guess she ran away. Yeah.
Speaker: ah I guess she yeah walked the plank. yeah ah Where did that? Where did that? mean she They don't even know she has a metal arm. Yeah, yeah. the Where did that other girl go?
Speaker: and she He probably says broad. Scallywag. Yeah. They just introduced this guy's two medical, medical, medical. These are my medical tentacles.
Speaker: ah you i need them to survive call it a medical for short these his two metal tentacles they just introduced them like a panel ago and yet they don't get pulled by the electromagnetic lock just her arm she's further away from yeah is adamantium magnetic How do magnets work? ah We've seen Wolverine be subjects so subject to magnets before.
Speaker: Maybe not in this podcast, but in 2026 we've seen him. Have we? Have we seen it in this podcast? Yes! Have we? We've seen him like, I don't know. Yeah.
Speaker: Have we? Yes, I can't remember when, but I remember seeing him flying across a panel with his arms out. Okay. So then, yeah, we're just we're ignoring it. Magneto has done it to him.
Speaker: Yeah, but Magneto controls metal, not necessarily like strictly magnetic. Oh, that's right. He calls himself Magneto, but he just controls metal. That's a good point. So.
Speaker: Colleen slashed by Sabretooth leaps from the window and runs. Sabretooth wants to pursue, but Constrictor reminds them that their job is to guard the warehouse. It's really good.
Speaker: This is like a great way to have your character near death, but not actually die is the the person trying to kill her who is just fine is like, oh, actually, I'm I'm not here to kill you.
Speaker: So if you yes, I thought you were saying a good way for a good way to do that is to lock them in a vault like a fucking sitcom. Oh, yeah. Misty Knight is on the other side of this vault. She's still in the room with Constrictor and Sabretooth, but they don't know because she's trapped in a vault.
Speaker: Colleen limps her way back to Danny Rand's apartment where he's training with martial artist and stage actor Bob Diamond. Bob Diamond. Hey, I'm Bob Diamond. Hey, it's me, Bob Diamond. Do you know Bob Diamond?
Speaker: No, is he an actually significant character? No, I don't. i This is the first time I've ever seen Bob Diamond. runs around, as far as I can tell, he runs around with the heroes for hire, thinks he's a superhero, but every time they get into something, they have to be like, Bob, this one's not for you, bud.
Speaker: yeah They use Shuriken correctly in this fight with Bob Diamond. Yes, as a distraction, not as an actual weapon.
Speaker: Iron Fist throws it at him, and he is ah unaffected. He knocks him to the side with his hands. Sick. yeah Danny and Colleen call Luke Cage, and the three of them sneak back to the warehouse while they're staking it out.
Speaker: Iron Fist sneaks away and hides behind a bunch of objects using his ninjutsu skills. It's like hiding behind a lamppost and a mailbox. It's very funny. You just see his like little head poking out. It's and i I get what they're doing. Like you can kind of if you use your imagination, you can look at this series of panels and be like, yeah, he's sneaking by all. He's just staying right out of their eye lines.
Speaker: but it looks so reality you're just looking at danny ran trying to make himself smaller than a light pole unsuccessfully yeah yeah yeah ah um he makes his way to the vault he punches right through it with his iron fist saving make misty from the slow death of suffocation how yeah where'd the door go after he punched it Because she was stuck to it. Her arm was magnetically attached to the door that he punched open.
Speaker: So it opens... towards him. if you look at the panel. He punches it so hard that it bounces off the door jam and back at him. Back at him. There's a scene where he punches, it where he touches the magnetic lock, and he's like, huh.
Speaker: Then he makes his fist iron, and he punches it, and the magnetic lock so explodes. He's punching the center of the vault. Yeah, yeah. The magnetic lock explodes.
Speaker: And then the next panel, he is walking into the vault and it is opened the direction that he just like door opens towards him towards him. So, yeah, one logical conclusion. He punched it so hard that it bounced off the door. It bounced off. Yeah. Yeah. ah And then is his iron fist not impacted by the magnets?
Speaker: um ah He said it's at this point, Luke Cage and Colleen, they take the opposite approach. well Luke Cage says, holy sheep.
Speaker: Yeah, I love Luke Cage. Holy sheep. And then they charge right in the front door, clobbering a bunch of art thieves until they run into constrictor.
Speaker: Using his tentacles, he grabs Colleen's sword and sends a jolt of electricity through it. ah We didn't know we could do this. ah Yeah, this is starting to look an awful lot like ah a character. is This name is just coming to me. I have no idea who this is Omega Red.
Speaker: What are you saying? Like a guy that just shoots tentacles and then zaps people with them. But Omega Red has a, ah like, his tentacles suck life out of people.
Speaker: ah I just blacked out for a few seconds, Pat. What happened to the both of us? don't know. Let's get back to the recap. um yeah He sends a jolt of electricity through it. It knocks her out. But lu Luke charges, but he finds he can't get close with those electric tentacles whipping around. dang it.
Speaker: that is when he That's when he says holy sheep. um Back upstairs, Sabretooth, he pounces. Misty gets out of the way as Sabretooth attacks Iron Fist with his fists, his claws, and his fucking teeth.
Speaker: Yeah, he bites off a piece of Danny's uniform, and Danny's like, what the fuck is this guy's problem? and They are completely blown away by what? Like,
Speaker: What is this guy? He's like a dog. Stop. When he's thrown across the room, he flips out the light knowing that he'll have a better shot in the dark. It's it's the exact gambit of the snow blindness.
Speaker: There's one saber tooth plot at this point. He sneaks up on Danny and slices him across the back. o But it was just a bluff.
Speaker: Danny was only pretending to be hurt, and he springs up, kicking Sabretooth in the face with both feet. He's like, I can be an animal, too. I'm a possum. If you're a dog, I'm a possum. fit Very good, Danny. Good job, Danny.
Speaker: And Misty says it like like like he's done something brilliant. Like, wow, you used an animal trick against an animal. Possum. I could be Sabretooth.
Speaker: Yeah. Like, no wonder they're in love. They're both dumb as hell.
Speaker: Downstairs, Luke tries the ninjitsu art of hiding behind stuff. But he's bad at it. and Constrictor's just like, oh, there you are. And he's like, dang it. This is so good. He's like, well, Danny can do it. I'm sure I can too. And then he's just this hulking man behind a, like ah a vase.
Speaker: vase! standing vase. And he can see his entire body. And then he's just like, ah, crud. yeah The constrictor literally says the line, oh, there you are. It's so funny. And it's Danny. they it's ah Sorry, it's Luke crouching behind a face. And he keeps trying to do it while constrictor is attacking him. Like he's looking at you.
Speaker: You can't hide while somebody is watching you. That's a D&D rule. These guys, they're all so dumb. Is this like part of the theme of Power Man and Iron Fist is that everybody's dumb? you i Yes. Yeah. yeah okay So especially when Colleen Wing and Misty Knight are present, like Luke and Danny are idiots by comparison. that just Okay. they've got They've got Moxie and they're also both very strong.
Speaker: So do you think Misty is actually just stroking Danny's ego when she's like, oh you used an animal trick, honey. That's i nice. I think so. Yeah. I think she's when he's like, aha, I played possum. She's like, that's very clever.
Speaker: and so proud of ah The way that Luke is doing this, all the art that they're supposed to be like protecting, they're supposed to be beating up the art thief ring. Yeah, yeah. He's just getting all this precious irreplaceable art destroyed. Trying to hide behind very expensive art pieces while he knows the constrictor is attacking him.
Speaker: Instead, he lets himself get constricted, deals just deals just takes the electricity, and then slams Constrictor against a wall. Constrictor's like, wait, you're not supposed to be able to do this? No! like Luke grabs the tentacles and starts swinging him around. he says, help! Let go of me!
Speaker: um They take the jade tiger, they call the cops, they go home in the end. Nice. The last panel is just them in a spotlight walking towards the camera.
Speaker: Yeah. Which will be very funny. Later in this episode. um But yeah, fucking Sabretooth slashes Danny in the exact same spot that he did in the last issue. It's the exact same fight. ah Yeah, yeah. In the dark, slashes him in the back.
Speaker: That must be so frustrating if you're Iron Fist, right? Like, you're just like, oh, damn it! God damn it! That just healed. it's like It's like when... um It's like when you're trying to beat a boss in a video game and you get killed the exact same way. You're just kind of like, oh like fuck, I knew this was coming.
Speaker: All right. All right, Matt. i can't I got one more Power Man and Iron Fist for us. I think you got two more Power Man and Iron Fists for us. Well, right now I have one. How am I going to read two recaps at the same time? Okay, yeah, read me a Power Man and Iron Fist. Here comes Power Man and Iron Fist number 78, Slasher.
Speaker: s slash air slush air Mary Jo Duffy, writer, Carrie Gamble, penciler, Ricardo Villamonte, inker, Jim Novak, letterer, C. Scheel, colorist. I assume that's Christie Scheel. that Oh.
Speaker: Dennis O'Neill, editor, and of course, toilet shooter, editor-in-chief. Remember last episode when I called him John and said that would pay off?
Speaker: Release date, November 10th, 1981. Cover date, February 1982.
Speaker: Power Man and Iron Fist are just walking down the street when they hear a woman scream. They find her in an alley all beaten up with a group of thugs bearing down on her. They beat everyone's asses and save the woman, only to find that this gang didn't give her these wounds originally.
Speaker: there's ah There's a thing about this. So they're beaten up. They're beaten up these gang. We'll put a pin in that. That's a very important detail. via Yeah, yeah. They're beating up these thugs and they leave the woman like on ah on a stoop.
Speaker: And they're like, you stay here out of harm's way and I will go and I'm going to go back and kick more guys. And then they turn around and a guy is cut as and like, one of the guys is like,
Speaker: got her again. yeah It's like, why? Just leave. are you going back after her There are two superheroes beating you all up and you're like, I gotta get back at this woman. Like,
Speaker: we What is that? It's also just it's not relevant at all. It's just like he starts sneaking back up on the woman. They pause from their fight to go stop him and then go back to the fight. Like it's just extending the fight. Yeah, it's not like she is some special target that they are like, they're like hired to get this woman. So they have to complete a job. They're just muggers. And, you know, because it's 1980s comics, they're threatening sexual assault. um
Speaker: But they're like, he's he's like, aha, I've got you. I'm gonna, nobody can help you now. They're five feet away from you. If you succeed, like, what is the success scenario here? i touched your boob before you broke my face open. Like, what?
Speaker: I love there's a point. ah No one can figure out how to stop Luke Cage until one guy is like, well, I still got my boom box and smashes a boom box over the top of his head.
Speaker: It takes him down. works! It works! It's his one weakness. It's a boombox to the head. But then he grabs that guy by the foot and uses him as a club and starts hitting the other guys eating other with that man! It's great. Just then...
Speaker: ah ah just then he She didn't they didn't give him the wounds. They didn't give her the wounds Yeah, she's like he or they weren't my original attacker. They just saw me wounded and were going to take advantage of me.
Speaker: Yeah. Just then some Marvel character named El Aguila shows up and tells them that he saw her original attacker. He's called the Slasher.
Speaker: las La Slasher. And he's been menacing the area for a while now. The three decide to team up. They don't trust El Aguila. He was he was a villain for like half an issue, but then he turned out to be an OK guy and they agreed on something. So now they're like it's a tenuous partnership.
Speaker: Yeah, he's a he's a Zorro. He's just a Zorro. Yeah, he's a Zorro with like ah that can zap people. He's zapping Zorro. He's zapping Zoro. He zaps from his sword. it's like um ah It's like the Silver Samurai or Black Tom Cassidy, where he has to have a specific weapon for powers to work. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker: ah It's like, if he loses that, then he can't ever do his powers again. Later, a big man in a dingy trench coat with thick leather gloves and patchy masks.
Speaker: A big man in a dingy trench coat with thick leather gloves and a patchy mask walks into a tenement apartment. Creepy looking. When he gets inside, a man named... Yeah, he's got like...
Speaker: Uh, it's almost just like a piece of cloth that he cut two holes out of to make his mask. It's like this weird, it's got like a, uh, like a wearing someone's skin effect to it. It's gross. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. yeah It's, it's, it's, it's weird. Uh, when he gets inside this apartment, a man named Frank lectures him.
Speaker: He did it again, didn't he? They're not even supposed to be in town. And now the papers are full of headlines about this guy. What if they get caught? The masked man promises not to do it again. Okay. Phew. Good. La Slasher. I wonder if this is La Slasher. The next night, Colleen Wing and Misty Knight agree to walk the streets trying to bait the Slasher, trying to bait La Slasher into attacking again.
Speaker: While Iron Fist, Power Man, and Ella Gila keep watch. When a man grabs Colleen's shoulder, the three heroes pounce on him, but he turned out to just be some random dude who took her for a sex worker and was trying to hire her.
Speaker: They're like, we got to find this blade on you. And he's like blade, I just wanted a little fun. What did I do? And they're like, get out of our neighborhood forever. Or is he?
Speaker: Does he? How did you say it? but excuse ah Does who? We can cover it in a minute. Meanwhile, Misty Knight, in trying to catch up with everyone else, hears a scream.
Speaker: She turns a corner to see La Slasher. He's got his knife to a man's throat. They screwed up. The Slasher wasn't targeting female sex workers at all. He was just targeting whoever was closest. Really cool idea for a story, right? Like, oh, yeah, yeah. He's he's targeting female sex workers, so we're going to put some on the street.
Speaker: And then it's like, no, he wasn't. Like, you guys just got that wrong. There just happens to be a lot of sex workers. it's yeah He's out at 2, 3 a.m. every night. There's not many other people out there.
Speaker: Yeah. for A small detail, but a smart detail, I think. He lunges, Slasher lunges at Misty, but she kicks him in the face, giving her just enough time to pull a revolver on him.
Speaker: La Slasher admits that she has him beat, but then Frank appears, grabbing Misty's gun arm and knocking her to the ground. Frank, Frank is here.
Speaker: Frank's been here the whole time, Matt. going to blow your mind. He was the guy hassling or misty dressed up as a sex worker. What? That they all let go.
Speaker: That's Frank. What? Why? why i think that he was like up to no good or he was maybe taking lu slash air out to get like he was sizing up somebody. Okay.
Speaker: So he's you're. Huh? He is wearing a green trench coat and brown pants, which is what Frank is wearing. No, Frank is wearing... Same clothes, same face.
Speaker: Okay, no, all right. You might be right. I'm not saying you're wrong.
Speaker: I don't know this. It doesn't quite make sense. It doesn't make sense. I don't know that you're right. But I also don't know that you're You saying that. I don't know that you're right, but I also don't know that you're not.
Speaker: Yeah, you keep saying exactly that. I don't know that you're right, Pat. I just also don't know that you're not. That you're wrong. Could be either way.
Speaker: On one hand, you could be right. You at home, you make the call.
Speaker: The slasher, hungering for blood, of course, starts advancing but is suddenly zapped by the sword of El Aguila. Yeah. When he turns his energy sword blasting things on Frank, he sees it as no effect.
Speaker: What the fuck? I still don't know. Now that I know who Frank is and I don't know, I don't know why that it, that I don't know why it didn't. Yeah. Yeah. yeah There is more to the story. This isn't just Frank, but when we find out who Frank really is, he'd it still doesn't make sense. Yeah.
Speaker: Frank starts firing Misty's gun at him as he leaps out of the way. Meanwhile, the slasher, La Slasher, extends a furry clawed hand and slashes at Misty's right arm. What?
Speaker: Only to be shocked to find that it's bionic. She socks him right in the stomach. Looks like a fucking powerful punch, too. Yeah, yeah. Well, it's her damn robot hand.
Speaker: Yeah. Just then, Power Man, Iron Fist, and Colleen Wing appear. They have lost La Slasheire on the ropes while Aguila whips the gun from Frank's hand. Frank runs off. Only to come speeding back in a car that he was trying to plow through everybody. But he honks the horn. Why is he that? Also, were you just absorbing like bioelectric power? Isn't there something more you can do than running people over with a car? ah No, a whip. My only weakness.
Speaker: ah The heroes leap out of the way just in time and La Slasheire hops in the car. He and Frank drive off with La Slasheire apologizing for ruining their job. The two swear vengeance to be continued. All right. yeah Okay, Pat. Here's where I have to apologize. Yeah. What the fuck? Why?
Speaker: I'm sorry that I made us read this issue. Clearly, there's no Sabretooth in it. There's no Sabretooth. There's not a single X-Man. It's about Frank and La Slasher and Ella Gila.
Speaker: I guess I got confused. I don't know, man. I don't know. I don't know how this happened. yeah ah we'll We'll fix it in post, I guess. Here's the thing. Yeah. We just met Bob Diamond last issue. Yeah.
Speaker: he's in the He's in the dang hospital. No, not Bob Diamond. No, I think he attacked by somebody in the intervening year. And he's in the hospital. Bob Diamond. No, he's going We hardly knew you. We just met you and now you're dead. Well, Pat, again, I'm really sorry for that issue.
Speaker: No Sabretooth, no X-Men. I apologize. but you know Let's keep an moving. I'm going make up for it by reading you an issue that definitely has Sabretooth in it. It's ah Power Man and Iron Fist number 84. Revenge!
Speaker: ri Mary Jo Duffy is the writer. Dennis Cowan is the penciler. Steve Mitchell is the anchor. Jim Novak is the letterer. Christy Scheel is the colorist. Denny O'Neill is the editor. And the editor-in-chief is George Sutherland, 1862 to Father of Donald Sutherland. Really? August 1982.
Speaker: Best Sabertooth and Constrictor.
Speaker: best buds sabertooth and constrictor So last time we saw them, they were, they were just hired for the same job.
Speaker: And now they're, they're the best of friends. They live together. They stand on a Manhattan rooftop vowing revenge. It seems the last time they were here, Misty Knight interrupted one of Sabretooth's hunts and he would have beaten her. He says, if she, he'd known she had a robotic arm.
Speaker: huh Why didn't we read that story instead of the last one that we just read? Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah, imagine a story. I just want you, people, close your eyes for a second. Imagine a story where Sabretooth just keeps going out on hunts throughout Manhattan, killing folks at random until he runs into Misty Knight and he tries to bite her or slash her or something.
Speaker: Finds out she's got a robot arm. She's got a robotic arm, and then he socks her. say Imagine this, then. This is what I imagine would happen next. She socks him in the stomach. And then Constrictor comes in in a car, honks.
Speaker: And then... Sorry. Sabretooth jumps in the car and they speed off. Would have been such a better story. Yeah. ah He does mention that Misty Knight broke a couple of his ribs, which is fucking awesome. That Misty Knight can punch so hard it breaks his fucking ribs. Yeah, yeah. um Also...
Speaker: Is this the first just straight up serial killer Marvel villain? I don't think so because I think okay Frank Miller at this point already had a hold of bullseye. And that's when he gets really like... He just starts going into crowds and doing like mass shootings.
Speaker: Jesus Christ. and Okay. Stuff. Wow. So, meanwhile... right Luke Cage, he's getting home from an early date with his girlfriend Harmony, who also happens to be Misty Knight's new roommate. Remember, Jean Grey moved away.
Speaker: Jean Grey died. Misty Knight got a new roommate. The X-Men return to New York. The first thing they always have to do is visit Misty Knight's apartment. Misty Knight isn't home, but Harmony is. She's a famous supermodel. And the X-Men freak out. And they, like, demand autographs in her home.
Speaker: They break into her apartment and demand autographs. So as ah as Luke and Harmony arrive, Misty, Danny, Bob Diamond, he's better. Oh, thank God.
Speaker: Wow. that was ah ah That was a suspenseful arc. that I am Bob Diamond and I am all better. ah you yeah I know you guys got worried for a second.
Speaker: I I'm okay. Doing fine. Yeah.
Speaker: well i'm bob diamond uh misty bob diamond danny and colleen they're all about to go out to party um harmony is left alone in the apartment as saber tooth approaches looking for his revenge on misty mistaking the two saber tooth attacks harmony racist A little bit racist.
Speaker: He does. just So it starts in the dark and we learn that Harmony has been borrowing a lot of Misty's clothes. So when he's like, oh, I can smell her. You could be like, OK, sure. I guess I could see like.
Speaker: How he's sensing, but at one point the lights turn on and he's still like, you're the lady that beat me up. It's just another black woman. ah Yeah, exactly. we cut Very different hair, very different face, very different body. Like, just yeah yeah completely different. And her arm is exposed.
Speaker: She's wearing short sleeves. So we can clearly see that's not a robotic That's not robot arm. Yeah. um later they say did by his racism Later they say it's because she was wearing um she she was wearing Misty's perfume. Right. But yeah, anyway, whatever. ah We already know he's a racist.
Speaker: um
Speaker: Luke, meanwhile, he went to see his ex-girlfriend Claire Temple at the hospital. Ooh. He's there when Danny comes in with Harmony all torn up and half her face missing. Danny explains that they all ran back to the apartment when they heard Harmony scream, but Constrictor was waiting at the door.
Speaker: What a weird friendship. Hey, you go in there and kill that woman. I'll wait at the door to make sure nobody bothers you. Yeah. It's fucking creepy. Um...
Speaker: ah While the girls fought him, Constrictor, Danny ran upstairs, but he was too late. Thankfully, though, instead of finishing the job, Sabretooth ran when he realized it wasn't Misty he was attacking. Because Constrictor's like, Misty Knight?
Speaker: Hey, Sabretooth! That's not Misty Knight! Misty Knight's out of here. Whoever you're killing isn't who you're trying to kill. And Sabretooth's like, bye. Oh, that matters to me in this moment.
Speaker: At Luke's insistence, Colleen and Misty pledged to stay out of it. while Luke tracks down Sabretooth to make him pay. Danny, on the other hand, won't let his partner hunt alone.
Speaker: Luke Cage gets to his location, and then as he's, I guess, staking the place out or whatever, Danny walks up behind him, and he's like, how did you follow me? And Danny's like, what do you mean? I just followed you down the street. You were just walking faster than I was.
Speaker: ah ah
Speaker: Power Man and Iron Fist, they interrogate their way through the Manhattan underworld until they find out that Sabretooth likes jazz. That's their big lead. hu He likes jazz. they go He goes to listen to ah to music at the same bar every Thursday. When they arrive, both Sabretooth and Constrictor are there.
Speaker: Danny takes Constrictor pretty fucking easily while Luke beats the whole ass off of Sabretooth. Yes, he does. But when Luke has him on the ground and is ready to kill him he's like got him, he's like strangling him to death. yeah Danny talks him into letting him go. One of those plots.
Speaker: i hate I hate those. That's so fucking interesting. Vengeance won't fix your issues. don't mind but i don't mind i don't mind that but the You're killing him. Don't you're going to if you do it, you'll be just like him. Like, I i hate that moment. Yeah. No, you won't. use belt This would have solved so many problems. This guy's a serial killer. You're a superhero. Like you this. You're no, you're not just like him. This is not a lesson learned moment.
Speaker: ah Later at the hospital, Danny tells Luke that Constrictor confessed to the police that he he and Sabretooth had been working for a villain called, I'm going to pronounce it Montenegro, based on the blaxploitation of this era. I'm going to guess it has a different pronunciation um in Luke Cage in Power Man and Iron Fist. Sure.
Speaker: i don't know who that is. Montenegro? Yeah. No, I don't... Man, I don't... I'm following Power Man and Iron Fist. ah um He was behind the art heist and the in attack on Jaron Hogarth, and it got out of control when Stabertooth started killing randos. Sure. did he do that?
Speaker: Remember when he tried to kill Harmony? Oh, that must be what they're talking about. For a second, I thought they got this confused with that... um The last The same height.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And they have similar motive. And it seems like they had the exact same run with Misty Knight. Yeah. Which is weird. They have the exact same. very it the same man they bought as a friend named They both have a friend named Frank. It seems like really easy to confuse the two.
Speaker: Surprised I haven't done that more often. So the heroes in the middle of a spotlight walk away into the sunset. It's the exact same fucking shot as them walking towards us, except for now Bob Diamond's here and they're walking away instead of towards us. I love this.
Speaker: And every issue, like put them all in a spotlight like they're on a stage.
Speaker: And they're either walking to or away from the camera. Direct, like perpendicularly. That's so funny. um Also, just a lot of ass in this issue.
Speaker: So much ass in this issue. Everybody's got a big old butt. Yeah, Dennis Cowan, he's drawn some big old juicy butts. There are points where people are like unconscious on the ground and their ass is huge. As if they're straining, as if they're like flexing.
Speaker: yet sat um ah Men and women are just all over the fucking thing. Just so much ass. um hughs Here's a question.
Speaker: How did Sabretooth and Constrictor get out of prison? They broke out. they Do they say that? ah Years later in one of the issues we'll read later in this Sabretooth is like, yeah, when me and Constrictor broke out of prison.
Speaker: ah a so don't worry. There's a canon reason for it. It's so funny that um Mary Jo Duffy is like, I'm not going to use Sabretooth again. So let's explain why he's been here.
Speaker: since 1977 when he appeared in iron iron fist 14 and explain who his who his employer was way back then it was a villain we hadn't invented yet there's thus yeah and so iron fist as you mentioned takes out uh constrictor pretty quickly but In the midst of that fight, Iron Fist is like, whoa, he's way faster than I expected. I got to move pretty quick here if I'm going to survive this fight.
Speaker: He said the same thing word for word about Sabretooth and Snowblind. Does Iron Fist just not expect anyone to be fast? i i I once again have to assume that in every issue of Iron Fist that we haven't read, he he says the exact same thing. This guy's whoa a lot faster than I expected.
Speaker: I thought I was the fastest guy around, and yet this guy's fast. People don't move fast. Only I move fast. I'm sure he said the same thing about Wolverine, right? Sure, yeah. In Iron Fist 15.
Speaker: Wow, this guy's much faster than I expected. And he definitely said it about Colossus, right? Because everyone says it about Colossus. Yeah, yeah. Well, so that that ends the Power Man. Man, these issues were fucking good, dude. Like, I want to read Mary Jo Duffy's run on Power Man and Iron Fist because it's fucking good.
Speaker: it was It's fun, but it also has, like, it's got a complexity to it without feeling too serious. Plus, we got to find out what the fuck, was up who's Bob Diamond? Yeah. I need to know everything about Bob Diamond. And I have to imagine at some point she reveals the identity of Lost Slash Air.
Speaker: yeah Yeah, I am on tinterhooks here. I can't believe I fucked up and made us read the Lost Lost Air issue instead of the Sabretooth issue where he goes killing people in Manhattan and attacks Misty Knight on the arm.
Speaker: I know. All right. Next time. Sorry. I'm so sorry. And I'm sorry to the listeners, too. Pat. Yeah. What's up? We're done with Power Man and Iron Fist. but We are, but we're not done with Sabretooth. Let me. No, he disappears. Pat, he disappears from comic books for another fucking four years.
Speaker: Oh, boy. um he apparently he shows up in Spider-Man Annual UK a Marvel Age Annual.
Speaker: No, what he's in like UK exclusive comic. He's in a UK exclusive comic and a Marvel age comic. And it's like. yeah I don't. Yeah.
Speaker: And then he doesn't come back to actual comic books until here. Until. Yeah, we're caught up to the present, Matt. This is you ready for this one?
Speaker: Peter Parker. No, no, no, no.
Speaker: all right. Yeah. Okay. i'm ready Peter Parker, spectacular Spider-Man number one, 16, 102 uses for a dead one hundred and two uses for a dead cat ah what Peter David script. Whoa! matt Yay! love Peter david This is so cool. i love the One thing I love about Spider-Man, and there's the age-old adage is, right, if you like Spider-Man, don't read any of his comics. Because...
Speaker: they're They're not good or fun and he makes terrible decisions. But yeah the one thing I do love about Spider-Man is if you're making your way up through Marvel Comics, you've got to go through Spider-Man. You are going to be handed at least like a three issue arc of Spider-Man to write.
Speaker: And so there are Spider-Man stories from like almost every writer that you can think of and that you want to yeah you want to read the work of.
Speaker: i Here's Peter Davids. Man, um and this is... this this we We cut a lot of it because... Because we're not following Spider-Man. We're not following Spider-Man. We're following Sabretooth. And he is... And it's a Peter David comic, right? So there's a lot of personal drama. And then they kind of cut to this the the superhero stuff. Yeah. um But this personal drama so yeah stuff here seems like it's really good. And it makes me want to read Peter David's Spider-Man. Yeah, seems pretty compelling. i kind of wish we read...
Speaker: The sections between 116 and 119, which we're about to read because it seems like a lot happens. but A lot happens, but not Sabertooth related. But not Sabertooth related. So go suck an egg.
Speaker: Go suck an egg. Rich Buckler pencils. Bob McCloud inks. you Remember that guy? hey he's back. Our buddy. Joe Rosen letterer, Bob Sharon colorist, Jim Owsley editor and crapper shooter editor in chief.
Speaker: Oh, still going. See if you sense a theme here. Release date
Speaker: I'm alive! You've been born for a few days. I've been born and we're caught up to the we're caught up to where we are on the fucking podcast. Yeah, that's true. Oh, yeah.
Speaker: Oh, yeah. In the middle of what seems to be a really good Peter David issue of Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man, we see Sabretooth. He spent a good deal of time murdering his way through government informants trying to find his old pal Foreigner.
Speaker: who is apparently the leader of some kind of assassin's guilt. Okay. Now, Matt, when people say foreigner in a villainous way these days, they don't mean the i sort of Spider-Man standing British man.
Speaker: is more of like a, uh, uh, the band foreigner. I had never seen... i knew that there was a character who had this costume whose name was Foreigner.
Speaker: Oh. I hadd never seen him. I didn't know anything about him. I only knew him from Sporklequises. Always knew. i I knew there was a villain named the Foreigner. I assumed it was like a...
Speaker: ay Fu Manchu level. Right. Like a racist. Yeah. Yeah. Depiction. And that's not just like I see him. Not just like a British guy. But no he's like ah a proper posh.
Speaker: I've um done an assassination today. You see reading through this. I was like, why do they call him a foreigner? He's American. But then he calls somebody chap. And that's kind of. Yeah. And he says something about tea at some point. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker: Sabretooth has recently escaped from jail again and is feeling aimless. His old pal Constrictor ratted him out. His old enemies are all nowhere to be found. Pause.
Speaker: Oh. So do you know do you know what what this is? No. So in Fist dead.
Speaker: iron fist is dead They ended Power Man and Iron Fist, the last issue. They kill Iron Fist. And apparently it makes Marvel fans super pissed off because um they intentionally kill him in a senseless way.
Speaker: like Oh, like he he trips and falls off a building or something? i don't I don't know what it actually is, but it's like no one saw it coming, and it's just like suddenly he's dead, and it's kind of pointless, and it's supposed to feel bad.
Speaker: um Damn. So Iron Fist is dead. And the writer, I think it was Archie Goodwin, is like, the stupid reader, like he's like made giving interviews about it up into the 2000s, like these guys, they didn't realize they he was supposed to be senseless. and It's like,
Speaker: You did something to piss people off. And then when people got pissed off, you were like, these idiots didn't realize I was trying to piss them off. Like, yeah what are you talking about? Archie Goodwin. Archie Goodwin seems like one of those guys who is just like so close to being a good writer all the time, but just like 10, 10 degrees off. I think he might just be like a guy who has good writing instincts, but it's super dumb.
Speaker: Sorry. Sorry. No offense, of course. ah Iron Fist is dead. Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, they ah disappear from all comic books yeah from 1986 until 1990.
Speaker: So for like five years, they're gone. They're so cool. Okay. Same with Luke Cage, but longer. He... His last appearance in a Marvel comic is Power Man and Iron Fist, the one where Iron Fist dies in 1986. He doesn't appear again until 1992.
Speaker: Really? He's in two graphic novels. is like a He's got like um a cameos in two Marvel graphic novels. But other than that, like he's just out of comic books. He's not hero again, until 1992. Yeah, he's out of comic books for like seven years.
Speaker: And so when Sabretooth is like, my enemies have disappeared, like that's what They're not in comics anymore. Exactly. Even Bob Diamond. he disappears in 1984. Not Bob Diamond. doesnt the bag and mint He doesn't back until Okay, so he does come back.
Speaker: i'll never tell no spoilers
Speaker: ah So, yeah, his old enemies are all gone and he needs to freaking kill guys. All he likes doing is kill guys. Can foreigner please give him a job?
Speaker: But Foreigner is like, sorry, chap. You're just too suspicious. Too conspicuous. Conspicuous. That's how British people say suspicious. He's like, you wear a bright orange outfit with ah fur on yeah on your ah like on every part of it. And you've got big claws and sharp teeth and a giant mane of blonde hair. oh man Yeah. And you do that out in public.
Speaker: But later he tells Sabretooth, let me show you something cool. It's a solid gold notebook I have.
Speaker: There's a point later where somebody is like, I'm pretty sure I saw a solid gold notebook, but that would be pointless. Yeah. He's like, hey, ah let me show you something got. Like, it's just, it's so like... Let me show you this super cool toy I just got. Exactly! And also, Sabretooth is just walking like, he's he's right. Foreigner's wearing a suit, and Sabretooth is walking around in his fucking outfit.
Speaker: There's also a fucking funny line, a funny Peter David-esque line, where he's like, um he's like, yeah, Sabretooth is like, yar, yar, what do I need to blend in then? And he's like, uh...
Speaker: orthodontia, electrolysis, a manicure, and pupils. Pupils. ah Very good. it's Very, very good. Very Peter David.
Speaker: ah so he wants to show off his solid gold notebook, but little does he know earlier in this issue, Black Cat stole it. Black Cat! He walks into his room and he sees a bunch of dudes that Black Cat kicked the absolute ass off of.
Speaker: Yeah. The guys explain what happened and Sabretooth finds a splash of blood on the floor. He tastes it and picks up Black Cat's spore. Ew. o s p o o r Yeah. Word?
Speaker: It is a word, but. Okay. Foreigner tries to tell him not to go after her, but Sabretooth already out the window. I gotta go. I tasted blood.
Speaker: He comes across as such a doofus in these early appearances. Yeah. Meanwhile, Spider-Man is paying Black Cat a visit to talk about their recent breakup.
Speaker: Peter Parker's single in this era. and Black Cat losing her luck powers. When he hops out the window, though, Sabretooth strikes. Black Cat is excited because her apartment is filled with traps, and Sabretooth is just about to step into one when Spider-Man comes swinging back in with a big old kick.
Speaker: Black Cat here says, go suck an egg, which is probably how it got stuck in your little noodle. Or maybe it's the reason I said it earlier. But it's another, again, fucking cool Peter David thing where she's just being, she just, she looks directly down the camera. Her nose is broken from her fight earlier. So she's got a bandage across her face, across her nose. And she's looking at the camera. She's smiling. She's like, she's like, go suck an egg as he's like about to step in her trap.
Speaker: Fucking God. I love it. It's so good. She also, ah earlier when when these guys are beating her up and broke her nose, she says, my does, you broke my does. hate to keep saying it, but Peter David has written that line in like 10 different comic books. Sure, yeah, yeah. It's always funny. Every time somebody yeah writes out.
Speaker: By nose. You bro'd by nose. You broke my nose. You bro'd by nose. You bro'd by nose.
Speaker: Spider-Man nimbly dodges all of Sabretooth's slashes while his camera snaps away, getting good shots for the Daily Bugle. When things start to get a little too close, Sabretooth slashes a big hole in Spidey's costume.
Speaker: Spider-Man shoots a web into Sabretooth's face. That moment gets it gets the cover of this issue. yes Spider-Man's down to his last costume. Sabretooth just ruined it.
Speaker: This is, to be clear, it's black suit Spider-Man, but I believe this is after he tore the black suit off of himself, went back to red and blue for a little while, and then was like, no, actually, I liked the black.
Speaker: I just didn't like the symbiote. Yeah, yeah. So if anybody's like, oh, well, why does this black costume get ripped? Because it's really a symbiote that can just repair itself. That's why.
Speaker: Sabretooth claws at the web on his face, using all of his strength to pull it off. Spider-Man tries to warn him not to, but Sabretooth rips the web off, taking a bunch of his skin with it.
Speaker: Jesus Christ. Sabretooth now has a big web-shaped mark across his face. God damn it. screaming. He's, I ripped my face off! You you fucking ass, I ripped my fucking face off! That's my face! You ripped my, you did this to me! You ripped my face off! It's nuts. and It's so, like, that's so graphic.
Speaker: Yeah. He's got... So... Now we know Spider-Man has a special web that adheres so strongly to skin that if you try to tear it off, your skin will just come yeah with it.
Speaker: Because I swear I've read dozens of comics where people pulled the webbing off their face after Spider-Man. And they had to be pretty strong. After Spider-Man, as as this sound effect says, plaits him in the face. Plaits.
Speaker: I'm going to plaits. Ha ha ha ha ha.
Speaker: So Spidey takes him to a hospital while Black Cat swears to get even with Spider-Man for taking away her kill. And Foreigner watches on the news, realizing he must deal with the Black Cat himself.
Speaker: To be continued. To be continued. Man, there's also such a really fucking cool cliffhanger that makes me wish we were reading Spider-Man. i don't know I don't know what we should say about it. Yes, there's just a boy who turns his abusive father to Ash. He burns his abusive father alive, seemingly without trying to.
Speaker: Yeah, with some, like, superpower that... Yeah, he doesn't know how to control. Yeah, yeah. And we're not going to find out what happens, but we, well, we're not going to find out how that plays out except for the very tragic ending. The kid says, ah oh, geez, mom's going to kill me as she's standing over the pile of ash that was his dad.
Speaker: um Very, very, very good. God, I love Peter David. And I want to keep reading some Peter David comics, Pat. I've got a couple of moments I have to mention from this because please, please mention them. Very, very funny. Number one, Sabretooth is i god yeah super mad running through the city, trying to find the black cat and keep being like, get out of my way. I have to kill the black cat for the foreigner, my boss who hired me.
Speaker: Stop yelling your boss's name at everybody. As you're committing crimes. He's like in Black Cat's apartment. He's like, now i've got to now I've got you. I'm going to kill you for my boss, the foreigner. Now my boss, the foreigner, is going to be so proud of me.
Speaker: Spider-Man swings in and kicks him and he's like, no, you're ruining everything for me and my boss, the foreigner.
Speaker: Sorry. Arr, you're ruining everything for me and my boss, the foreigner. Oh, right, right, right. i Another fun moment is Spider-Man and Felicia are arguing, right? They just broke up and they're trying to stay friends and they're like having an argument. Spider-Man says something and Felicia tries to slap him. She like...
Speaker: swings at him it triggers his spidey sense and so he just instinctively ducks out of the way and he just said something like rude he deserves to get slapped but he dips out of the way because of his spidey sense she misses and falls over to the ground so in this it's just this like slapstick comedy bit in the middle of uh in the middle of their very serious lover's quarrel it's it's super funny There's also a moment where Spider-Man is pacing his apartment thinking amount all the the the situation he's in with Mary Jane and the situation he's in with Black Cat. And he's he just, it shows, it's from outside his window and he's walking back and forth and then suddenly he's walking upside down on the ceiling and then suddenly he's walking sideways on the wall. Yeah, yeah, he just started doing like loops around his apartment. um That mixing of... um
Speaker: ah What would somebody's real life and real relationships and real like um what would it look like with the absurdity of superpowers is something that Peter David is fucking excellent at. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Better than maybe anybody else ever did it.
Speaker: And when I mean, Rich Buckler, paid credit to Peter David because he does it consistently through his comics. But Rich Buckler is right on board. He is. Yeah, good point. He's got the same sense of humor going here.
Speaker: Who knows? Who knows? Who knows? Here's what I know, Pat. What's that? Spectacular Spider-Man number 119 is called Catfight. Catfight.
Speaker: ah Script, Peter David. richck Rich Buckler, breakdowns. Bob McCloud finishes. Rick Parker, letterer. Dean Martin.
Speaker: wow. Says D. Martin. So it must be Dean Martin. Yeah, they got Pat Martin. ah He's the colorist. It seems like that's a little bit of a leap beneath his station, but hey, they they got him. Jim Owlsley is the editor and the editor-in-chief.
Speaker: The editor-in-chief is Pierce Butler, 1866 1939. Pierce Butler, Rich Buckler's father. Release date, July 1986. um pierce butler rich buckler's father ah release date july fifteenth nineteen eighty six I'm alive. Cover date,
Speaker: October 1986. Also alive. Mary Jane Watson. Remember her? Yes. Yeah, I do. She's throwing Peter Parker. Do you know who he is?
Speaker: No. ah He's the Spider-Man. Oh, which one? Amazing or spectacular? but Both. What, Matt? Yeah. He's not astonishing, and he's not...
Speaker: or Sorry, he's not uncanny Spider-Man and he's not superior Spider-Man, but he is amazing and spectacular. He is not Spider-Man 2099, but he's I will never keep this all straight.
Speaker: Mary Jane's throwing Peter Parker a surprise party amidst all their weird just-being-friends relationship drama. Meanwhile, however, Sabretooth is plotting Raven. He's recovering in the hospital from his face wounds.
Speaker: When he snaps out of his restraint and crushes the doctor's neck.
Speaker: Donning hospital scrubs, he attempts to sneak out of the room. Sorry. He steals the doctor's his scrubs. He goes through his pockets. He finds a ticket to cats.
Speaker: As far as we know. and Sabertooth went to see, I believe this the original run, right? 1986. Wow. I believe he went to see the original run of Cats by himself. It was only one ticket.
Speaker: So also, I guess we should, I guess some ah Sabertooth lore, some Sabertooth lore from last issue. Foreigner was Sabertooth's old teacher, I guess. Sabertooth lore from this issue. I guess he doesn't have his healing factor yet.
Speaker: But we I guess we so but we should ignore that because um that's probably a continuity error. Right. We just don't. We don't know that. Yeah. Because Chris Claremont hasn't decided that Sabretooth has a healing factor yet. Yeah. um So Donning Hospital Scrubs Sabretooth attempts to sneak out of the room when one of the cops guarding it notices blood on his hands.
Speaker: He starts counting his kills as he rips through both police officers. pulling the bandages and mask off his face, he reveals a web of scars across it and vows vengeance on Spider-Man.
Speaker: At the same time, Black Cat, now with apparently new cat-like superpowers and a new costume that that sucks. it Definitely not as good as the Black Cat costume. No, yeah, the Black Cat costume is iconic. It's classic. It's simple.
Speaker: This one's trying to do too much. This is another Zorro costume. Yeah, yeah. It's another Zorro costume, but with ah gold studs on the shoulders. I will say there are some points...
Speaker: in this comic where i I don't think it's a good costume, but she looks fucking bad ass. She is yes crushing it. And she's just happens to be wearing this costume. There's okay. i The Philadelphia Eagles football team.
Speaker: Why is this two Superbowls. Okay. Currently. or is i mean, was it? Yeah. They won two Superbowls. Both have been in the last 10 years.
Speaker: I don't care. the eighties, they wore this like Kelly green uniform. Okay. You know, the color Kelly green, it's like bright, like a, a very bold green and white. And then sometime, I think it was around like the late nineties, they switched to midnight green, which is like a a little lighter than forest green, but still a pretty dark green. And that's been their new color ever since. Um,
Speaker: But there's been such a revival of the throwback jerseys, the Kelly green jerseys, because people love them. And they like, it's nostalgic, but also it's just, it's such a bold color. It looks so good. And people, people will say like, why don't they just go back to Kelly green? Everybody loves the Kelly green. And I'll tell you why, because as much as the midnight green, isn't as good of a color, they've won two Superbowls in that color.
Speaker: so So this might not be Felicia Hardy's best costume, but with the shit she pulls off in this issue, maybe it should be.
Speaker: You brought it around. Okay. All right. I'm back on your side. We lost we lost our friendship for a second there, but it revived itself. So yeah. So now she's stalking around Manhattan ah herself, the same as Sabretooth is, and she's trying to get over her breakup with Spidey Man.
Speaker: She finds herself on the Roosevelt Island tram, the aerial tramway that takes you from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island, which Spider-Man artists love.
Speaker: He is um always goofing around on the Roosevelt Island. tree He's always doing crazy, even in the movie, right? Yeah. Yeah, what heck? I don't remember which one.
Speaker: Sabretooth tracking Spider-Man with a piece of cloth he tore from Peter's costume. Because Peter Parker is Spider-Man. um He starts leaping across rooftops, his inner monologue wild with bloodlust and pride. um he's just He's just going over a list of people who have wronged him.
Speaker: He closes in on the party at Peter Parker's apartment. Peter's spider sense alerts him and he tries to make an exit, but Mary Jane won't let him. As this happens, Sabretooth racks up two more victims, both cops, for a total of five kills on his revenge quest. And those last two were Mary Jane's fault.
Speaker: Sorry. Yeah. She told her, she said, no, don't go. Don't go save those cops. um And we also know it's five because he is counting them out loud as he goes. he is Once he kills the fourth and fifth, he goes, that's four.
Speaker: That's five. Yeah. In the street, Sabretooth begins shouting for Spider-Man only to receive a kick in the back. It's the black cat!
Speaker: Hell yeah. She rakes her claws across his face, reopening his web wounds. Then, with her cat-like reflexes, she nimbly dodges every Brutus charge and swipe from Sabretooth.
Speaker: When he finally gains the upper hand, he bites her leg, only to sink his teeth into the hidden lockpicks and mini crowbar that she keeps in her costume. Idiot!
Speaker: He goes, ah metal. Enraged, she pounces on him and brutally smashes his face into the pavement over and over and over and over again until he finally stays down.
Speaker: god a damn, dude. Yeah, it's brutal. It's brutal. Like the she was just dripping. She goes into like this feral mode when he bites her leg and doesn't break it, but it's enough pain for her to be like, I'm ending this now. And she just she ah gets him down to the ground, picks up his head and just like she is kneeling on top of him so he can't get up and just holding him by the hair, slamming his head into the pavement.
Speaker: Over and over again. Blood is going everywhere. Every time like she lifts his head up, he's got fewer teeth. It's so fucked. Yeah, he's like gooey. He's like gooey by the end. Yeah.
Speaker: And she's doing it all in this in this costume. Hey, wait. That reminds me. Or that makes me think of this. that that Not reminds. that That raises a question in my short mind. Does a healing factor regrow teeth...
Speaker: don't see why it wouldn't. It's bone.
Speaker: Huh. Yeah, but your teeth don't heal. If you lose a tooth, it's not going to even slowly come back. Yeah, but same if you lose, like, a finger and healing factors can fix that.
Speaker: yeah. All right. Good point. i think it I think it just... But I think it maybe ah cements our idea of... ah a healing factor takes like a snapshot of your body and always returns it to stasis. To that. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it doesn't heal old scars or if he doesn't have his healing teeth, his healing factor yet, it's not going to put the teeth back in his head.
Speaker: Right, right, right. Peter, at that point, had finally just escaped his party and made it to the rooftop as Spider-Man, only to receive a knowing wink from Black Cat on the ground. Oh, it's so good.
Speaker: so the Her face is feral, and then she sees Spider-Man, and it just lightens up, and she gives him a little, eh, I gotcha. um Peter goes to bed that night thinking that, well, Black Cat, she must still love him.
Speaker: As we see Foreigner congratulating her on the performance against Sabretooth, she passed her test. And they make out.
Speaker: And they make out. So, yeah I mean, whatever's going on there. and ah We're not following Black Cat and Foreigner. um Meanwhile, Sabretooth lies in a hospital bed, again, with four police guns trained on him at all times. He swears he will kill the Black Cat, then Spider-Man, then Iron iron Fist, then Power Man, then the Constrictor, and Foreigner will be impressed. The end.
Speaker: There is yeah running through the entire comic here. he is he keeps explaining that his motivation for doing this is to get work with foreigner.
Speaker: He wants to join the assassins guild or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. But he's like he's making this up in his head. He's been in a hospital bed for days, if not longer.
Speaker: yeah And he gets out. To find ah Spider-Man and then find Black Cat. And he's like, this is, I'm sure, what the foreigner wants me to do.
Speaker: Now. Crazy. He's it's out of his mind. He's out of his mind. It's important to note.
Speaker: what do Okay, Pat. Yeah. What did we learn about Sabretooth so far? He's fucking crazy, man. He's crazy. He's a literal serial killer.
Speaker: Yeah. He lusts for blood. Like his his motivation is just, I want to hurt people. That's the reason he wants to join the Assassin's Guild. So that he can just he can kill more. Yes. And get paid for it so that he can keep killing. He sucks.
Speaker: He sucks at his job. Yeah, he's just like getting chumped left and right. From his first appearance where Iron Fist is like, this guy's strong and he's fast. And because of that, he never learned how to fight. Like he just, yes he relies on being strong and fast.
Speaker: And he's kind of a doofus, right? Like he's just being a doofus over and over. Like he keeps doing doofy things and getting doofed on because of it. But he's already 10 feet out the window when the foreigner's like, ah you don't go after her, please. I'm on my way. he's such a, he's he's like a he's like a big dummy.
Speaker: And these seem incongruous with the Sabertooth we get to know later, if you know anything about Sabertooth. This is also the month before the mutant massacre starts.
Speaker: So right he ends ah June in a hospital bed. In August, he is wherever the mutant massacre happens. He's playing a part in that story.
Speaker: Yes. so Interesting. Interesting. Very interesting. There was an intention here. So Chris Claremont noted how... yeah what's what's this all about?
Speaker: this is This is tough. So Chris Claremont noted that Sabretooth wasn't that scary. This way, right? Okay, there's a lot. So first, Chris Claremont invented Sabretooth to be a kind of, ah like, have some connection to Wolverine. um The thought was, many people have thought that his intention from the very beginning was to make Sabretooth Wolverine's dad. Oh.
Speaker: Okay. We'll see if that ever comes to pass. um That has been discussed by comic book fans for a very, very long time. Sure, yeah.
Speaker: Remember in the Wolverine miniseries, though, Chris Claremont was like what had Wolverine say like met met mention offhandedly that he knows who his dad is. Oh, yeah, yeah.
Speaker: So was he referring to Sabretooth at that point? I don't know. But then he he abandoned Sabretooth for fucking 10 years. Yeah. He invents Sabretooth and then doesn't touch him for 10 years.
Speaker: Yeah, it it definitely seems like there was maybe more of a story here that that didn't get to get told. Right. um And then when he comes back, it's in the mutant massacre, and he's supposed to be this in c incredibly intimidating threat.
Speaker: And so the question is, ah how do the two square with one another? Man. I'm going to have to be very careful about how I say this because there is a way I could tell you this that will really spoil some shit.
Speaker: don't do you Don't do that one. yeah So ah um I'm just going to say it in this way. Chris Claremont had the intention of of revealing at some point that every saber tooth we've met so far...
Speaker: has been a clone of the real Sabertooth. And that the real Sabertooth is actually stronger and faster and better and cooler than Wolverine.
Speaker: Shit. Cooler? That sounds so intimidating. I can say at this point, that is not what happens, right? Like, that does not end up being the case. Okay.
Speaker: This is the real, we've seen the real Sabertooth, but it still doesn't square How he's supposed to be like a big threat to Wolverine at this point. like Because Black Cat beat the living ass off of him. Misty Knight beat the living ass off of him. Iron Fist beat the living ass off of him. Luke Cage beat the living ass off of him. Spider-Man beat the living ass off of him.
Speaker: And Wolverine can beat up all of those guys. And so we'll see. it went when do you I mean, maybe Wolverine meets him one day. Who knows? We might never know.
Speaker: We might never know. So, yeah. How do you feel about this or the origins of Sabretooth? Yeah, I'll say it again, Matt. He seems scary. He seems be pretty capable. And the only thing holding him back is like a ah lack of good decision making.
Speaker: ah You excited to get to know him a little more? I'm very excited because I know that this becomes much bigger than it currently is. And yes, a lot more brutal too, right?
Speaker: Yeah. I mean, i'm so I'm surprised just how much of his characters already locked in from the very beginning. That they, that from the very beginning, they were like, yeah, he's a absolute brutal murderer.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah. But yeah, other than that, like, these were fun stories. Love Mary Jo Duffy. Love Peter David. ah This guy Chris Claremont shows a little promise.
Speaker: Yeah, I kind of want to read all of these arcs. I know. Yeah, it's crazy how, and... Listen, I've read a good chunk of Power Man and Iron Fist.
Speaker: Okay. Not by Mary Jo Duffy, as far as I know. It's fine. It's like a it's a middling comic. Same with Spectacular Spider-Man. Same with Iron Fist in general. Like, they're all comics that have these really good moments, these really good runs. But for the most part, they're just they're fine. They're they're there to sell comics. Like, yeah, yeah.
Speaker: But put saber tooth in the mix and this seems they all become engaging. Do you think I will be disappointed if I read these runs Based on what you just said.
Speaker: ah No, because I think like, well i I mean, Spider-Man has just been running for so, so long, even already at this point that there's good runs in there. There's bad runs in there. And Peter David, we seem to have found like a pretty good run. Same with Power Man and Iron Fist, not nearly as many comics, but like we see Mary Jo Duffy's sense of humor and her capability as far as like storytelling goes uh that's what we've seen out over her every time we've seen her right so i have confidence that her run on this is going to be pretty solid it's just probably limited
Speaker: And i'm i'm I'm excited that we are going to see, um pretty soon we get to see Mary Jo Duffy's Fallen Angels miniseries. And I'm im i'm excited for that, i especially after reading this. yeah All right.
Speaker: He's got an eye out, stuff that could buy out. If you had a time machine that you'd like to try out, it can feel,
Speaker: Ooh, Matt. Ah, Pat. You're going to hate this one. it's a product we've seen before, and it doesn't have a price on it.
Speaker: Damn it, Pat! What is the point of this fucking goddamn fuck? I'll tell you the point of this goddamn fuck. We have read, er i'm sorry, I have read so damn many Hostess Fruit Pie ads.
Speaker: This is the best one I've seen.
Speaker: oh ah So right this Iron Man versus the bank robbers. Oh, do you want to? So it's ah it's a full page comic. If you want, what we've been doing recently a lot is just going panel by panel.
Speaker: right, let's do it. Trading off. So in the first panel, we see bank robbers hold up inside the first state bank, holding the bank employees prisoner. And the narrator tells us bank robbers are hold up inside the first state bank and are holding the bank employees prisoner.
Speaker: In the next panel, we see Iron Man outside. he's ah He seems to be lecturing two cops in big vests. And it says, meanwhile, outside. He's beating his finger at them.
Speaker: He's lecturing them. He says, we need a diversion to give us time to get through the door before the bank robbers harm anybody. And so in the next panel, the cops respond. One says, now they're demanding that food be sent in.
Speaker: The other says, they'll get no food from us. While Iron Man says, wait, that may be our big break. So now we see ah Iron Man playing with a bunch of hostess fruit pies. mountain of fruit pies. He's playing with them while the cops in the background with big guns look on. And he says, send in these hostess fruit pies. Then I'll listen in on their conversation with my cyber helmet receiver.
Speaker: So in the next panel, we see a cart with a mountain of hostess fruit pies on top being rolled into the bank. And the robbers, one says, hey, hostess fruit pies. The next says, give me that cherry one. And the third, as he throws his gun aside, I'll take that apple.
Speaker: And then. i'll take that apple and then Next panel, Iron Man is bursting in the door, hostess fruit flies hostess fruit pies and bank robbers going everywhere. And he says, now that's the time for a little heavy handedness.
Speaker: In the final panel here, Iron Man is dragging the three bank robbers out by their collars as they say, oh we should have never put our weapons down.
Speaker: But who could resist the real fruit filling and the light tender crust? And the bank manager looks on smiling as he eats a hostess fruit pie and then holds another hostess fruit pie in his other hand.
Speaker: He's eating, he's double fisting hostess fruit pies. Also, the bank robbers have huge smiles on their face and they're continuing to eat the hostess fruit pies. As Iron Man drags them away! Well, at least we got these fruit pies out of it.
Speaker: ah I love that he's like, he's like, I have a, I have an idea. i will hide my transmitter in these hostess fruit pies so that we know exactly when to, I'm just going to burst in. yeah ah Actually, I want the fruit pies.
Speaker: They're eating all my fruit pies. but I better get in there. Wait second. Those were all my fruit pies. First of all, I was playing with those. All right.
Speaker: I guess. Oh, Pat.
Speaker: all right ah sir
