Hello listeners on this episode of book watch adaptation report. We got some cinnamon con trailers. We have an animated to live action that we're going to talk about, even though it's not a book.
00:00:13
Speaker
I'm Sarah day. I'm Chris. And I'm Jordan. And we will get started after these messages.
Narnia Release Delay and Current Coverage
00:00:28
Speaker
Welcome to Book Watch, the podcast where pages meet screens. Each week, we dive into the world of adaptations, comparing beloved books with their cinematic counterparts. From faithful retellings to bold reimaginings, we'll break down what worked, what didn't, and what made each adaptation unforgettable. Whether you're a bookworm, a movie buff, or both, grab your bookmark, grab your popcorn, and let's watch some books.
00:00:52
Speaker
Okay, welcome back. a Quick note, we have been talking about the Narnia release, and it was supposed to be this year, but they have changed that back to a theatrical release in 2027. So we will have to wait a little longer to talk about Narnia, but we will still continue our coverage of what has been released with the films, with Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
00:01:21
Speaker
Good job. Nailed it. Yay. A little sad not to get that one this year, but it's you know probably for the best to make sure it's not mixed up with all the other things releasing
Current Reads and Shows
00:01:31
Speaker
around that time. So I think probably for a positive change in the long run.
00:01:36
Speaker
They saw that Harry Potter was coming out in December. They're like, we are not competing with that. See, that was my thought also. Theatrically also Endgame is in that time frame. so Or not Endgame. Sorry. The Doomsday. Doomsday. Sorry. Um, well, yeah, I, I think that it's a good move on their part to give us something to look forward to 2027 and not compete, like we've said, with all these other things that are coming out and just let it breathe a little bit.
00:02:04
Speaker
in Um, so what have you guys been reading and watching this past month or what are you looking forward to coming up?
Episodic Coverage Plans for Percy Jackson
00:02:13
Speaker
Um, my book club is starting a Sarah J. Maas reread in anticipation of the new ACOTARS coming out. later this year so we're reading crescent city right now it's the bane of my existence but um it it's it's my least favorite of her three series but it's going down easier the second time around so that's nice um i'm also reading frozen by stardust by elizabeth helen um it's book number five in their beasts of the briar series um it started out as a
00:02:47
Speaker
Beauty and the Beast retelling and then it's gone a little off the rails from that point but it's kind of like a guilty pleasure read like it's it's not anything that's gonna like change your life and be earth shattering to your soul ah but they're entertaining and a little maybe you're maybe not a little smutty and so yeah I'm just gonna keep I'll just keep reading them as they come out it's fun uh and then I'm gonna start Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy soon uh since that's our next book watch I'm also pumped because Percy Jackson season three has finished filming.
00:03:22
Speaker
It's ready to go. The release date is also in December, so I'm just going to be eating my little heart out. I've got Harry Potter. I've got Percy Jackson in December. I've got Doomsday. I'm just going to have be having the time of my life in December. It's going to be the best Christmas ever.
Audiobooks vs. Reading Debate
00:03:38
Speaker
um I'm super excited. It's the first time that the Titans curse has ever been brought to screen. So some like these characters, we've literally never gotten a visual representation of them before. the storyline we've never seen.
00:03:51
Speaker
visually before, um which we've talked about, I'm super pumped. And then for you listeners and watchers of Bookwatch, we are thinking about doing an episodic format of the podcast and doing an episode for each ah doing an episode of Bookwatch for each episode of the show. So we can really dive in deep and compare like so chunks of chapters to the episode that they represent and just make sure we get like all the nitty gritty details, especially since we don't have to also compare to a C tier film.
00:04:25
Speaker
So that'll be fun. And then if that goes well, you know, we're not sure I'd think about what the Harry Potter release strategy
Reading Goals and Book Count Discussion
00:04:32
Speaker
is. if it's going to be all at once or like weekly episode drops. But if you guys like that, then, you know, even if it does drop all at once, maybe we'll still do episode by episode coverage of Harry Potter too. So write in and let us know if you're excited about that. If you're like, nope, just give it to me all at once.
00:04:50
Speaker
You're cool. You're the listeners. So just let us know. But yeah, I'm pumped. It makes me tired just thinking about it, um all those episodes.
More Book and Series Discussions
00:05:00
Speaker
I'll have a newborn at that time, you guys realize. don't know if how much sleep I'll be getting, but I'll do it for you listeners.
00:05:07
Speaker
If I got to get on here and do it by myself, I will. like er I'll be here. You guys know Percy Jackson, that's my boy. So if i have me and Sarah Day got to do it ourselves and Chris can just listen be a listener for those ones, we'll do that. But of course, we would rather have Chris with us.
00:05:23
Speaker
anything for you listeners. um I am, have been starting a new couple new jobs and had a lot of stuff going on. So my reading has severely slowed down ah this last month. Well, wait a minute, wait a minute. Update the listeners. If we haven't already on how many books you have read this year so far so that we can all catch up to you. For Mrs. Saraday's mom, it's read slash listen to. Yeah.
00:05:49
Speaker
ah No, just read. my mother and I, listeners, got into a debate on the way home from a family's bridal shower on reading versus listening to audio books. So also write in and let us know, does listening to an audio book count as reading the book? Or do you want us, dear listeners, to be more strict in us saying we've listened to the audio book instead of we read the book when we've listened to the audio book?
00:06:21
Speaker
Do you care? Basically, it's what we want to know. So this year so far, I have read 46 of my 100 book goal so far. So when you say you've slowed down.
00:06:34
Speaker
But if i if you have to have read the books physically, I've read, I think, half a book this year. No, they count. It counts. accounts For all sense purposes of our podcast, it counts.
00:06:45
Speaker
um So Slowed Down is just this last month. I haven't had as much time to be reading as many things. um So far this month, I've been ah following along slash ah working through the Crescent City books with Jordan because she mentioned it to us. so I like those books better than or not better, but almost ah as much as any of the other Sarah J. Maas books. So I've been poking, prodding at Jordan about ah the different parts of the book and, you know, telling her all the good things and trying to get her to enjoy them more. But so far doesn't seem to be making an impact.
00:07:21
Speaker
i I'm trying to be open minded. It's also my least favorite of the Sarah J. Maas books, but I did start listening to it because you had messenger it mentioned it, Jordan. um And I got
TV Show Excitement and Classic Rewatches
00:07:35
Speaker
a few chapters in and then I kind of forgot about it. I started re re um catching up on some of my podcasts and now we're going to have to switch into –
00:07:47
Speaker
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. So I don't know when I'll get back to Crescent City. So I've also finished Wake Me After the Apocalypse, which was one of my 12-12-12 recommendations. And it was a fun, quick read. it is the first of a series. I would like to continue the series. It doesn't leave on the cliffhanger per se, but it definitely felt like there's more. And I'm excited to see what else happens in this story.
00:08:16
Speaker
I think it would be... Update us on your other one, too. You had that other book club book that last time you were telling me you were really enjoying it, and then there was something that dropped out. Oh, yeah. that last yeah um The last... The last... Okay, so that was...
00:08:31
Speaker
wild dark shore and it was like okay and it was interesting and I one point I thought they were all actually ghosts a la the others but then that's not what happened but the ending just felt like nothing else in the book mattered like it just fell flat for me so you were about an hour in it left or something, think, when you last took the lesson. You were really excited about it at that point. Yeah, it was like the last 20 minutes just kind of like... So I would put it in a C, like a C-plus book for me. I wasn't bored. I was interested, but would I recommend it?
00:09:14
Speaker
ah Maybe for like a car ride. If you have a long car ride, it will be like it'll get you through the car ride. Yeah. and Going back to Wake Me After the Apocalypse, I think that would make a good adaptation for like a CW show or like, you know, like the MTV shows back in the day. Or I guess it would be like a Netflix show these days. Just the really fun young adult type story.
00:09:40
Speaker
um The Correspondent is
Harry Potter Show and Streaming Services
00:09:43
Speaker
my book club book this month. And I've also been working through the Harry Potter full cast audios. So yeah, lots to read. But of course, The Correspondent and Hitchhikers are going to be my priorities for Book Club and the podcast. And then um things that I've been watching, The Shrinking in the Pit are done now. um Daredevil is currently going on.
00:10:08
Speaker
um and then I've recently rewatched The Jumanjis. And that does include the original Jumanji now. I started with the more recent The Rock ones, um but then i saw the original Jumanji on Netflix. So i we went ahead and started that last night. So I'm really excited for the next Jumanji coming out. And then I do want to recommend to everybody, speaking of Harry Potter and maybe doing episodes episodically, There is already a making of the new Harry Potter show on HBO. And um it's like a 20 to 30 minute little episode about the casting and some of the set designs, some of the costume designs, and even the animatronics. So if you haven't seen that, if you're interested in the new show, if you're on the fence about whether you want the new show or not, watch this documentary.
00:11:04
Speaker
I think it will get you excited for the show. But then I have to subscribe to HBO early. Yeah. I have the bundle, the HBO, Hulu, Disney Plus bundle.
00:11:18
Speaker
Perfect. I should get it back, but I just haven't put out the money yet. Yeah. I mean, Game of Thrones is on there. Harry Potter's on there. Lord of the Rings is on there. Yeah. kind of There's kind of a lot happening on HBO.
00:11:31
Speaker
The Pit, right? like there's There's a lot happening over there. Yeah, that's what kept us with HBO was The Pit. and But yeah, like you said,
Upcoming Series Adaptations
00:11:38
Speaker
Lord of the Rings rewatches, Harry Potter rewatches. Also watching Daredevil and Maul and Invincible have all been incredible. It's really awesome. like Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, I'm like, okay, Monday we've got Maul, and then Tuesday we've got Daredevil. Wednesday we've got Invincible, and we're just – glued to the TV. it's like the it's This is like the best stretch of TV that my husband and I have had in a while. I do feel like TV has gotten a lot better recently than the past few years. like I think COVID and all the strikes that were happening like really put a dent in good TV, but I think we're back, baby.
00:12:18
Speaker
All right, let's talk about what is releasing this month. We've got Margot Scott Money Troubles by Rufy Thorpe continues to air as a weekly series release on Apple TV Plus starring Elle Fanning. With near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, the adaptation is earning strong praise for its sharp humor and Fanning's standout performance. While reviews are largely positive, some critics do note the series doesn't dig quite as deeply as it could.
00:12:47
Speaker
The Deal by Elle Kennedy arrives on Prime Video on May 13th as season one of Off Campus with all episodes dropping at once. The series follows an elite college hockey team and centers on the opposites to attract romance between Hannah and the star athlete Garrett.
00:13:06
Speaker
The highly anticipated adaptation has already secured an early season two renewal ahead of its debut. Good Girl Bad Blood. by Holly Jackson inspires season two of a good girl's guide to murder premiering May 27th on Netflix.
00:13:22
Speaker
Emma Myers returns as Pippa fits a Moby alongside Asha banks and Zane Iqbal as a new mystery unfolds. The season builds on the success of the first raising the stakes with a darker, more complex case.
00:13:40
Speaker
All right. So, um, Margo's got money trouble. I've read the book already. Um, and it's really, I like i enjoyed it quite a bit. Um, so I'm wanting to start the show. Um, but I've kind of decided to wait until it's all out so we can kind of bit and binge it a little bit. Um, but from everything I've seen and heard all the trailers, I think it's going to be, i think I'm going to really enjoy it. I think that Nick Offerman as her The dad character in it is going to be awesome. I think that Elle's going to have an amazing performance.
00:14:10
Speaker
And she reads the audiobook, so I've already got it in her voice. So I'm definitely excited for that one. Don't know much about the other two things here, but it sounds interesting. Yeah, I'm also excited for Margo's Get Money Trouble. I haven't started reading it yet, but with reviews like that, it's you know, it's got to be good. And then I'm curious to see what the critics mean by it doesn't dig quite as deeply as it could. I'm sure it's about like the emotional depth or like getting into like some of the harder ah concepts, you know, that a book can take more time to get into than the show could. But I'm curious to see if I... end up agreeing with that at the back end.
00:14:52
Speaker
not familiar with the other two that you mentioned, Sarah All I could think about with the deal, the hockey thing, is like respectfully to everybody in the world named Garrett, like that's that's the name we're going to go with for the lead of a romance thing. Oh, i don't know. i Not your name. That's totally just like nitpicky of me, but I'm just like Garrett just doesn't sound like a very sexy name to me, respectfully. um And also, I'm pretty sure I've seen this on like, one of those, like, knockoff, like, I see it like in an ads on Snapchat of, like, the...
00:15:34
Speaker
I don't know how to describe it. Just like crappy acting and crappy show. Oh, I know exactly what you're talking about. Yeah. You get it. I'm pretty sure I've seen this before. Yes. It's like a reel. And then it's like subscribe to watch the whole thing. Yes. Hey, and I'll watch them. I know. They're so bad. They're so bad. Because they're going to show you another reel somewhere down the line. It's going to have rest of it. Yes, and there is one I see all the time on Snapchat, and sure I'm going start seeing it again now that I'm talking about it and my phone is near me. But it is like a hockey one where it's like, my brother's nemesis, but they're on the same team.
00:16:16
Speaker
Girl, the drama is ridiculous, but it made me think, this headline made me think of that. I'm like, that's crazy that they're just taking that and making a movie of it, even though this probably came first. Yeah. Hockey dramas are very popular right now.
00:16:30
Speaker
They are. I I know it. um But I have seen like a few ads for this um before I saw – like before we added it to our headlines. um I had been seeing some chatter online about off campus. um It does look like it will be a cute little, like I said earlier, you know, young adult kind of rom-com. um Maybe a little bit more than young adult because I think it is – College. Set in college. Yeah. um
00:17:00
Speaker
But yeah, i and I think I saw a little bit about the first season of A Good Girl's Guide to Murder because I believe Emma Myers is in Wednesday. So I recognized her um and, you know, kind of would like to see more of her work. So I was interested in that at the time. I didn't know was based on the book. Um, so maybe we can add some coverage of this series, um, somewhere down the line, but it it looks like it's a good lineup. It seems a little light compared to what we've had thus far this year. I think April had a lot going for it. Um, so a good month to kind of catch up on some
Netflix Releases and Cast Excitement
00:17:41
Speaker
All right, we have a few release dates announced with Enola Holmes star starring Millie Bobby Brown alongside returning cast members, including Henry Cavill, is set to premiere on Netflix on July 2026. First look images have have been released, but a trailer has not yet dropped. Netflix has also set Heartstopper Forever, the feature length finale based on Heartstopper by Alice Osmond for a release on July 2026. A first look image has been released, but no full trailer has dropped yet.
00:18:17
Speaker
So looks like some fun things are coming to Netflix in July. Yeah, this Enola should be a lot of fun. um I've watched the other two. They were Millie Bobby Brown's ah has does a great performance in them and Henry Cavill. And it'll be it'll be fun to see them all back again.
00:18:34
Speaker
um It's an interesting take on Sherlock Holmesian stories. So I enjoyed it. I could watch some Henry Cavill. I'm into that. He's Sherlock. you know.
00:18:48
Speaker
Yeah, I think he's a fun Sherlock. I saw the first one, did not see the second one, but I would like to read the books and kind of compare those like I do. And then watch watch the second one and then this one coming out in July.
00:19:02
Speaker
Chris, are they based on like actual Sherlock Holmes stories?
Off-Campus Series Casting Updates
00:19:07
Speaker
It's based on Enola Holmes books, yes. So Enola, I think was created after Sherlock Holmes went into the ah public domain as another like way to an entry point into the story, another character that they created to be um that the detective character, but adjacent to Sherlock. And so I think that some of the storylines mirror some of the Sherlock Holmesian cases in the past, but ah ah for the most part, it's its own story. read that the first one was pretty much a direct adaptation of the first book. And then the following movies were looser adaptations of some of her books. um
00:19:45
Speaker
But they, I think they, I think I saw that there was eight or so books in the Enola Holmes series. I was just wondering, cause I listened to a podcast where somebody, it's basically an audio book, but it's,
00:19:57
Speaker
Sherlock Holmes short stories because they're not like full length novels so the Sherlock Holmes stories it's like a collection of like novellas or short stories and so like this narrator just reads through the different short stories so I was like I was wondering if Enola obviously as a rip off quote unquote of Sherlock if it was going directly copying Sherlock Holmes stories but there's apparently books of Enola Holmes so that's interesting and I believe are they cousins is Sherlock's cousin she's his sister it is his sister okay much younger sister thank you
00:20:44
Speaker
Okay, we're going to get into our updates of things we're keeping track of Speaking of off-campus season two, the next season is expanding its cast with Philippa Sue and ah aa India Fowler.
Little House on the Prairie Reboot
00:21:00
Speaker
In newly announced roles, Fowler joins as Grace Ivers, a series regular and key romantic lead opposite Antonio Cipriano's John Logan, signaling a major new storyline while Sue will appear in a recurring role as Scarlett, a theater director working within Briar University's drama department, adding a fresh creative subplot to the college-set romance series.
00:21:24
Speaker
Philippa Sue from Hamilton. Yay! That's all. Yeah, I mean, it's a good cast. It'll be interesting. And, um you know, this is season two we're talking about. And so we have to get through season one first to see, you know, how we feel about it. um And then but it is exciting. It's always good to know that a second season has already been approved before the first season has even aired. Yeah.
00:21:51
Speaker
mean, somebody enjoyed it somewhere. The Night Agent, based on the novel The Night Agent by Matthew Kirk, is adding Titus Welliver and Lee Jun Lee to its season four cast as the Netflix thriller shift its action to l L.A.
00:22:06
Speaker
Welliver will play a DOJ prosecutor, while Lee Jun Lee joins as a key figure tied to Peter Sutherland's latest mission. The new season continues expanding the series rotating cast format with production expected ahead of a 2027 release window.
00:22:24
Speaker
Cool. Cool. Netflix has released first look images and a teaser trailer for its upcoming Little House on the Prairie reboot. Based on the classic books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, the series reimagines the Ingalls family's journey west, blending a hopeful family drama with survival stories set on the American frontier.
00:22:43
Speaker
The show is set to premiere July 9th, 2026, with a full cast previewed in the new stills and teaser footage. I remember reading these books in elementary school. it was like second grade when we were talking about like westward expansion a lot and like life on the prairie. um And I always thought they were like so boring. But now like as an adult, I can appreciate like the his like the true story nature of it And like that is actually how those people were living. And like this is was Laura's real life on the prairie. And that's really cool to have those firsthand accounts of what life was like and still have them be relevant to a modern audience. um My dad, actually, his favorite show when he was a kid was the original Little House on the Prairie show.
00:23:36
Speaker
He's real nervous about this ah because he that like that show for him is like one of it's like his iconic childhood show that like he grew up with um way back when the 70s and 80s and stuff um and so he is like it's already perfect like why do they need to touch it again um which you know because it's a classic yes we've all said that about like our favorite things like harry potter like why do they need to make a show like the movies are perfect like why did it like but like we said it's
00:24:10
Speaker
to get the next generation into it because I was too young to grow up on that show. I saw it anytime it was on, he would sit and watch it and I'm like, the show is so old dad. So like revamping it and having like the modern technology just of the camera. is going to be something to get new audiences interested and involved in this story and keep it going as a classic and perpetuating the like legend, like the the true life legend of the Ingalls family and the their little house on the prairie.
00:24:45
Speaker
I wonder if there's a way you could make this. I mean, I obviously think this, you know what you're saying is important. I think keeping the classic and having a version is like that. But I wonder if there's a way you could make this like a modern retelling of the story. um I wonder how if that would be an interesting way to adapt that
Modernizing Classic Stories
00:25:00
Speaker
sort of thing. Like, let's say it's a, I don't know, ah um a van life storyline or, ah you know, you you you take the elements from a Little House on the Prairie, but you make it kind of a modern, like ah coming of age story or something.
00:25:13
Speaker
Yeah. Just an idea. Throwing that out there for free. i think that would be hard because so much of it is like the survival aspect of like living in an environment where it's not quote unquote civilized. Like it's there's like a town, but like they're living out in the wilderness and they're having to use the materials around them.
00:25:35
Speaker
to survive and like, you know, having to raise and slaughter their own animals and like using, and i remember like using like the pig's bladder as a balloon, like, and getting this maple sap out of the tree, like for sweet, like all of those kinds of things. Like it would, it's kind of difficult. And I would dare say impossible to recreate that because like so much of our world is,
00:26:03
Speaker
again, quote unquote, civilized. And like, even in ah like a van life situation, like you were saying, like, you can still pull up to the target and get whatever you need. You like, you don't have to like,
00:26:14
Speaker
chop down a tree to start a fire kind of thing. There are people that want to live that way though. So you could probably make it like someone who doesn't believe in doing those things or something. This is just you know, a script writing now, but, uh, I was just thinking that that could be something that could be interesting for the
Upcoming Films and Adaptations Discussion
00:26:30
Speaker
adaptation. yeah I know that they're doing that Oregon trail show as well, which is kind of a similar, uh, Apple TV is doing where it's kind of a similar thing, but, uh, you know, as long as someone dies of dysentery, I'm into it. So.
00:26:41
Speaker
Yeah, as long as that part is historically accurate, then we're good. The Dog stars, directed by Ridley Scott and based on Peter Heller's novel, debuted its first look images and trailer at CinemaCon 2026 via Century Studios. The post-apocalyptic film stars Jacob Elordi, Josh Berlin, and Margaret Qualley in a survival story following a deadly pandemic and a mysterious radio signal that sparks a dangerous journey. The film is set for theatrical release on August 28, 2026, with Scott emphasizing it as a big screen cinematic experience.
00:27:17
Speaker
Josh Brolin in a big cinematic, big screen experience. Oh my, that'll be, that sounds like it's going to be great. I wonder if, I don't think we've ever seen him in something like that before. Strangers to that. No, I, I'm excited for this one mostly because of the cast. I think it looks really good. I haven't read the book yet. I have it here on my shelf, but, uh, I, you know, that's just a trophy. I need to get the audio book and read it properly.
00:27:39
Speaker
um but I'm excited for this one. I think that it seems like it's going to be, it wasn't on my radar, but I think it's going to be pretty good. Now that i found it. Yeah, this is the first I'm hearing of this, but the description sounds very interesting. The cast is great. So I definitely want to check this out.
00:27:59
Speaker
Jacob Elordi's in everything right now. Yeah, he's hot right now. That's for sure. I think the only thing I've seen him in is Frankenstein and he was great as Frankenstein's monster. i don't know. I guess I haven't seen like that much of his acting where I'm like, is he supposed to be starring in all this stuff? But ah like i don't I can't tell if it's like he's that good of an actor or if it's just like oh my god he's like six foot four and he's super hot like that which i don't even agree with i don't think he's that hot either mean myself hey all respect to jacob alordi me myself personally not my jam um but yeah i'm curious i would watch this especially if we end up you know maybe covering it and i would be curious to see like can bro actually act or is he just tall and good looking
00:28:46
Speaker
Yeah, I haven't watched anything i don't think that he's been in either because I don't watch E. Furia. I didn't see Frankenstein and I didn't see Margot Robbie, Jacob Elordi.
00:29:00
Speaker
Wuthering Heights. Thank you. Wuthering Heights. So yeah this might be the first Jacob Elordi property that I see. well We'll see. Amazon MGM Studios has released the first trailer for Verity, the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's best-selling novel starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson. The psychological thriller follows a struggling writer hired to compete I heard lot about this when the and
00:29:35
Speaker
major buzz for its tense twist-heavy tone i heard a lot about this like when the book had come out colleen hoover of course has a lot of trendy books on tiktok and instagram And the movie has been talked about, like this is not, this is always in my feed, right? um I am interested to read the book. I have, I never read it because I wasn't a huge fan of Colleen Hoover and I thought that it would give me anxiety to read it, but I am excited to cover this book and the movie on the podcast. um Now that I have two friends that will help me through the anxiety of reading this book.
00:30:15
Speaker
I wonder how it compares with like the his and hers or things like that as far as the, I mean, those weren't super thrillery, but, you know, they had their darker elements.
00:30:26
Speaker
um I wonder where on the dark psychological thriller it lands. ah I need to do some research. I've never been even remotely interested in reading a Colleen Hoover book. um From what I've seen like on BookTok and stuff, it's pretty split. Either you really love her books and everything she's about, or you really hate them. and As we know, me already not being into contemporary style novels, I was like, I'm probably going end up in the hate it camp, and so I'm just going to not bother, waste my time. um
00:31:03
Speaker
But they keep getting adapted. They keep getting made into movies. So Cause I mean, we've had, it ends with us and then reminders of him. and now this, like that's three that I know of off the top of my head. I think there's been one other one or there's a couple others in development at least. So there's something there, you know, to the point where they're good enough and there's enough of a fan base for them to be continuously adapted. So I guess I'll have to give it a shot, but I think if I'm gonna start a Colleen Hoover journey, the one starring Anne Hathaway is going to be the one for sure. Cause I didn't like Blake Lively even before all the drama yeah and like reminders of him. I didn't recognize anybody on that cast, um which like is a good thing. Like you get new, new stars, you know, can come up through, through that Avenue. So good for them.
00:31:57
Speaker
But yeah if I'm going to ever read a Colleen Hoover book, it's probably going to be Verity because anne I love Anne Hathaway and she's starring in the movie. Yeah. Other than that, i mean, Godspeed to Colleen Hoover, I guess.
00:32:10
Speaker
Yeah, i read a few of them. the It ends with us and starts with us when my wife was after my wife read them because she wanted me to read them. um And they were they were fine. um Nothing I was overly excited about. And I mean, the thing we have to keep in mind with any adaptation or any movie and book series is it's not always for everybody. you know It might not be a series for written for us, but it might be something that appeals to someone who really loves romance books or the having a little bit of the tension in their romance or their contemporary style. So...
00:32:41
Speaker
I definitely think it could be, this one could be really good. It's, you know, the, that psychological thriller can really add a lot to a story. And yeah, I think Anne Hathaway has a good chance of making it ah really good. And so I'm, I'm open to it and we'll see how it goes.
Anticipated Adaptations
00:32:56
Speaker
The other Colleen Hoover was regretting you. And that came out about the same time as reminders of him, I think right before. okay um I do think that ver Verity is her most mature of the adaptations we've gotten so far.
00:33:15
Speaker
From what I gather on, like, interwebs. i would Yeah, from what I've gathered on the interwebs, too, it's the most popular of her books. like I think that one is one that, like, everybody who reads Colleen Hoover, everybody likes Verity. Yeah. Some of the other ones are, you know, people like or don't like or don't like how she handles certain topics. But everybody's kind of on board that Verity is like her best work.
00:33:44
Speaker
So we'll see how it goes. ah So, oops, forgot to move this little headline up to the top with the other dates. But Apple TV Plus sets Silo Season 3 for July 3rd, 2026 premiere. Gosh, July is going to be stacked, you guys. Okay, debuting a new trailer, teasing expanded before times, flashbacks, and escalating Silo-wide unrest. um My husband and I are big Silo fans. I believe he read the book...
00:34:15
Speaker
Did I read the book? I might have. i honestly forget. You know, my memory is not so great. um But the show, we love it. I'm super excited for season three. um i definitely want to like read the rest if or all of the silo books and see how they compare. But um yeah, really excited for season three. And July apparently is going to be a really fun month.
00:34:41
Speaker
Yeah, I haven't picked these up yet, but I do want to. but I've heard good things. love post-apocalyptic storylines. um ah the The sci-fi elements to it seem interesting. So I'm definitely interested and we'll probably pick it up soon when I find some time.
00:35:01
Speaker
Okay, moving on to some books that have been picked up for adaptation. First up, we have Peacock is developing a live-action Dungeon Crawler Carl TV
Updates on Series Adaptations
00:35:11
Speaker
adaptation with Seth MacFarlane attached as executive producer through his Fuzzy Door banner. The series is being written by Christopher Yost and is based on the hit lit RPG novels by Matt Dinneman. The story follows Carl, a Coast Guard veteran forced into a deadly intergalactic game show after an alien invasion wipes out most of humanity alongside his talking cat companion, Princess Donut.
00:35:37
Speaker
The project is currently in early development at Peacock with no release date announced yet. ah my husband just finished listening to this book. Same. Yeah.
00:35:50
Speaker
And ah the review he gave me made me very interested in reading it. He's like, I'm really nervous that something's going to happen with the cat. And I'm like, hey, what do you mean about that? So he was trying to explain it to me. and I'm like, I'm also now very concerned that something's going to happen with the cat in the sense of like,
00:36:12
Speaker
and ah a weird relationship between Carl and the cat that I don't really understand so I want to read it um se Seth MacFarlane is a very well known name ah so that and I think he's doing the Oroville right the Star Trek show it or yeah it or yeah Yeah, so he's got some experience doing more than just like family guy type stuff. So that's cool. um Peacock makes me nervous because this sounds like, again, haven't read it, but it sounds like an intergalactic game show. Like, i feel like you need some budget for that. i don't know if Peacock's got that kind of budget.
00:36:52
Speaker
But maybe they do, because that has, like, NBC, where, like, that's where all, like, the Law & Order fans are and stuff like that. So maybe they maybe they've got something hidden up their sleeve. um But...
00:37:03
Speaker
I'm excited that it's getting an adaptation because I think, you know, they're very popular. I didn't really hear much about them, but now it's like everybody I know is like reading them and loves them. And they're all over my Instagram and my TikTok. Like, you have to read these. You have to read these. i'm like, okay, girl, dang. Like, give me a But, ah and maybe that's because it's been announced and so on. People are like, oh, what's this? And now they're reading it, but it had to have a fan base to get it adapted in the first place. So, I'm excited. We'll see how it goes. I'm nervous to read it, but hopefully it's it's good. And there's like a bunch of them, right? Like seven or eight of these books. And ongoing. Yeah, he's still writing. so
00:37:44
Speaker
Oh, awesome. So that's that's exciting that there'll be hopefully multiple seasons of this and it'll be another thing for nerds to get into everywhere. I've heard nothing but good things about these. I've been told I have to read them over and over again, which makes me not want to read something. So um but I will read this ah soon. It's um I have it on my phone literally to read once I find the moment to start something new again.
00:38:09
Speaker
um But, and once I get into it, I know I will keep reading the entire series. And so that's why it's a big time commitment for me is I've got to be ready to go for eight books or whatever it is right now. So, um but I've had multiple friends recommended. It's come up in my book club. It's come up on my yeah feeds and stuff. So I am worried about the adaptation. I mean, I think Seth MacFarlane's fine, but if you do this right, it can be amazing. If you do this wrong, it's,
00:38:35
Speaker
You're going to lose a lot of respect from the fans that love this show or this book. Yeah, my husband, like I said, read it also. And the review he gave me was like, I'll probably like it. He's a little worried about the violence and like the gore. He's because I can't do a lot of that. So I'm like, oh, my gosh, like what's happening in this book that's going to make me.
00:38:56
Speaker
not want to read the violence and the gore but um i haven't seen anything mentioned about that on the online so i don't know i don't know if he's just being like overprotective um or just like trying to like set me up so like it's not as bad as it really is but i definitely want to give it a try like i've been like you said it's been like more and more on the internet everybody's recommending this i want to give it a try um but it's probably not going to be until closer until the show is coming out because i know this is probably something we'll cover on the show um and we've got what is it uh so much content so little time so hopefully i can fit this in somewhere soon but yeah definitely looking forward to it seems like it's going to be a fun show and it seems like it's going to be um a very anticipated show by a lot of people
00:39:45
Speaker
Netflix is developing the Nanny Diaries series based on the best-selling novel by Emma McLoughlin and Nicola Cross, with Scarlett Johansson attached as executive producer.
Fern Gully Live-Action Adaptation
00:39:58
Speaker
Johansson, who starred in the 2007 film adaptation, is now returning behind the scenes alongside Barlanti Productions and Warner Brothers Television. The series follows an inspiring writer who becomes a nanny for a wealthy Upper East Side family, exposing the hidden chaos behind privilege and excess. It is currently in development at Netflix with writers Amy Chozik and Jenny Bix attached as showrunners.
00:40:23
Speaker
I watched the Scarlett Johansson movie when it came out and, um you know, it it wasn't anything groundbreaking, but it was fine. i like Scarlett Johansson. I'm excited to see what she can do. She seems to be, you know, really interested in this story because she starred in it and now she wants to produce a TV show about it. So I look forward to seeing what she can do.
00:40:48
Speaker
probably cast or They'll probably cast and Sidney Sweeney or something. Sounds sound like Handmaid or Housemaid for a sec there. so I don't think it's as like thriller if I remember that. I never read the book, but the film was just kind of like, you know, she's a nanny. So she develops the relationship with the kid, kind of like that other book or I'm sorry, the other movie with Brittany Snow.
00:41:14
Speaker
That's not her name. Brittany Murphy. I know what you're talking about. And then young Dakota fanning. So, you know, it's that kind of just like drama. Yeah, no, I think this will be pretty good. I think Skylar Johansson probably has a pretty good idea of what to do with the story to make it good after starring in the original version of it. I don't know anything about the book, but it seems like they've got a plan that's going to probably work out just fine. And yeah, I would just, as you were reading the description, it kind of kind of reminded me of housemaids for his Housemaid for a sec there. And so i was like, they're probably going to...
00:41:50
Speaker
ah ruin this by casting Sydney Sweeney in it as that main character and make make that association too close or something now I hope they get someone interesting and someone that can make writing you know seem like a it'll probably be a you know in her head writing style thing too on the side so I think there's definitely a story to be told there that could be really good on Netflix Is it one book? Because I'd be interested to see because it's a series. I'd be interested if there's only the one book if they do like spinoff seasons and like continue to tell the story beyond the confines of what the book gives them. um Because that, you know, as we know from Game of Thrones, things can go off the rails really quickly when you don't have a book to base it on.
00:42:36
Speaker
um but go cool From what I'm seeing, it looks like it's just one novel. Okay. So maybe it'll just be a miniseries and just cover that book. But this sounds like the kind of thing where if you have a good writing team, you could expand it beyond just what happens in the book and it could still be successful.
00:43:00
Speaker
um If I remember correctly in the movie, she gets fired at the end and that's kind of like the climax of the film. um So yeah, it would make sense that it could just be a limited series. But yeah, we'll see what happens.
00:43:15
Speaker
A24 is developing White Smoke, a TV series based on the upcoming 2027 novel by Nick Brucker, with Benedict Cumberbatch set to star and executive produce.
00:43:26
Speaker
The story follows a Vatican set heist involving con artists during a papal conclave papal thank you i knew you would know the word um the story follows a vatican set heist involving con artists during a papal conclave produced in partnership with a24 uk and cumberbatch's sunny march banner the project is still in early development with no release date or additional casting announced i think that sounds dope why does 2027 sound so far away Yeah.
00:43:59
Speaker
And that's the book. Because we're still living until like 2017. Yeah. And the book isn't coming out until 2027. So like this is another series just like Project Hail Mary that got an adaptation before the book was even released.
00:44:15
Speaker
Yeah. It's a very interesting trend. I'm pretty sure Suzanne Collins started it with like Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Sunrise on the Reaping announcing the book and the movie at the same time. At the time. That one makes sense because she has a history of her books being adapted and it's all in the same universe. So, but to get these one-offs, you know, and like- And haven't been good as Project Hail Mary. Nick Brecker, actually the name does kind of sound familiar, but for, you know, for some of these things that are being adapted and the book is not a well-known author, like they're really taking risk on doing this adaptation. Like what if the book is not well-received?
00:44:59
Speaker
I think in for this one specifically, it'll still be okay because Benedict Cumberbatch is starring. And like that's a very well-known name. like every but like Pretty much anybody everybody knows who Benedict Cumberbatch is, whether it's from Sherlock or Doctor Strange or whatever else he's been in. like You know who that is, or at least you recognize his face. um And so you know even if the book kind of sucks and isn't that awesome, like well, it's still a show starring Benedict Cumberbatch. And like... I'm just hearing this concept for the first time. Like, this sounds awesome. It's like national treasure, but in the Vatican, down. i mean I'm into that. It reminds me of um Angels and Demons, a Dan Brown novel and film.
00:45:44
Speaker
hey, I'm into that. Like there's a lot of different pieces here of this story that sound cool to me and like right up my alley, stuff that I would enjoy. so you and like now I'm like, oh I definitely want to read this book. I definitely want to watch this show. um and so even if one or the other is like kind of mid, I feel like there's enough conceptually that I'm still going to
Trend of Fantasy Book Adaptations
00:46:09
Speaker
give it a shot. And I think other people are kind of going to kind of be in the same boat where like, I'll at least give it a shot based on what I'm hearing here.
00:46:18
Speaker
And a 24 has a really great reputation for this sort of thing as well. If they are giving it the having faith in it, then the, the, the audience will come. While not a book adaptation, we all wanted to cover this. Well, actually, I speak for Jordan and myself. I don't know if Chris. A beloved animated classic is getting a live action treatment and it it is not a Disney movie.
00:46:41
Speaker
Amazon MGM Studios is developing Fern Gully, The Last Rainforest, based on the 1992 animated film. The project will be directed and written by Marielle Heller and is still in early development with no release date or counts casting announcement yet, but I think we're stoked.
00:46:58
Speaker
Yeah, I'm stoked. I ah grew up like watching Fern Gully. It was one of those like one-off non-Disney movies that was on rotation in the house. um It was like this and Anastasia. Yes. Oh, my God. Yes. And Anastasia. Oh.
00:47:15
Speaker
Love, love, love. But yeah, Frangoli is it's like, it's a climate change kind of story, like talking about the dangers of climate change and rainforest destruction. And it's told through like this talking bat voiced by Robin Williams and these little fairies who like live and a human who gets shrunk down. And like, it's kind of up the Dances with Wolves Pocahontas story of like, you know, this guy coming in and Like, I want to do this that, and the other thing. And then this, like, Native person to this space explaining, like, why your point of view actually sucks and is terrible and you should not do that. so
00:47:57
Speaker
It's like that classic kind of trope. We see it in Avatar with the the blue people Avatar, not the airbender. And so I'm just excited that it's getting some recognition, some appreciation. And a live action adaptation, I think, could be awesome. It could also be crap.
00:48:16
Speaker
But Amazon MGM Studios, like they've done like the Rings of Power, which is pretty well received. They've got the budget to make it good. So I'm excited. Right. And isn't Amazon MGM just did Project Hail Mary?
00:48:30
Speaker
Oh, shoot. Did they? Yes. Yeah. Well, then never mind. No concerns. It'll be fine. They got this. they can make a rock. Yeah, I'm very, very excited. I hope it's still at a ah musical. I just can't wait to see. I can't wait for casting to start coming out. And I just I can't wait for first looks like this is definitely something I want to cover on the podcast, even though it's not a book. Because like you said, on this episode it's like, it's just, it's like, I grew up on this also. It was one of my favorite. I still like when I see it on the streaming or wherever, I'm like, Oh, let's watch it. I've introduced my girls to it. So I cannot, ah cannot wait to see more of this.
00:49:07
Speaker
I may not know the Fern Gully story that well, um but when you you mentioned Anastasia and Talking Bats, and I definitely am a fan of both of those. So, you know, the Bartok from Anastasia. Yeah! VHS of the Bartok, the Magnificent VHS, not too long ago. And that was a one we had around, as well as watching Anastasia, that was always hilarious. Yeah. i i'm i'm definitely interested in what this what they do with this uh yeah i think my wife's a fan of the story so we'll definitely be following it closely i think one thing to note is that robin williams voiced the talking bat so that is going to be a role that's going to be heavily analyzed because who can fill those shoes um as long as it's not will smith i'll be fine yeah martin martin short
00:49:56
Speaker
Valid. After hearing him do the robot in Treasure Planet we've been covering right now, um I thought it sounded like Robin Williams at first when I was ah heard it. and now that His genie. So i was like, yes, he should take on more of these ah old Robin Williams roles a little kind Adapt some of those.
00:50:14
Speaker
Yeah, I'm down for that. The film adaptation of Artemis by Andy Weir, speaking of Project Hail Mary, remains in development at 20th Century Studios, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller still attached to direct. The project, first announced in 2017 with a screenplay by Geneva Robertson-Dorrett, has faced repeated delays but is still considered active, especially amid renewed momentum following Project Hail Mary.
00:50:40
Speaker
Weir has also expressed interest in casting Jenna Ortega as Jazz, adding fresh buzz to the long gestating adaptation. Yeah, um the book was great. So I'm real excited to see what this um comes, what what comes of this. I mean, Philip Lord and Chris Miller really know what they're doing when it comes to me making a ah a ah script. So ah the screenplay. So helping adapt that. So I really hope that, uh, they bring all their considerable experience, Spider-Verse and Project Hail Mary and all the other stuff they've done and really give this the, uh, treatment
Episode Wrap-Up and Listener Engagement
00:51:19
Speaker
it deserves. And we see hopefully more books coming out from Andy Weir soon because he's on fire and we need more of this.
00:51:26
Speaker
Agreed. Why the heck is it taking so long? i mean I mean, this thing has been in production in for since 2017, so like damn near 10 years, and they don't like they're still working on casting and stuff. what are What are y'all doing? Well, and keep in mind that Project Hail Mary itself took six years.
00:51:47
Speaker
So they're working on it. It takes some time to to crack the story just right, and I think probably they would probably put it on the back burner while they were working on Hail Mary a little bit, so sure it's coming.
00:51:59
Speaker
right. Well, I have faith. That'd be good. Netflix is developing The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen as a limited series starring Meryl Streep with Cord Jefferson set to direct and executive produce. The adaptation follows Midwestern family as they navigate a tense holiday gathering and a mother determined to bring her children home for one final Christmas.
00:52:21
Speaker
The project is in early development at Netflix with no release date announced yet. This sounds like it's just going to be the episode of the bear, the fishes, but like a whole show of it And I can't tell if that makes me interested or makes me want to run for the hills.
00:52:39
Speaker
Because that if you know that episode, like it is a lot of people are are like that's It's so real. like it' like That's how my family is. But it's so anxiety-inducing that it makes you like not want to watch it. But it's like a train crash. like You're like, i I can't look, but like I have to look. um But I love movies and shows about like family dynamics because it's like that's the most real thing ever is just how to navigate life with the people who love you most and what does that look like for...
00:53:13
Speaker
And it can be so unique to just your family, but also so you know such a universal experience of figuring out how to just exist. And what what what's going to happen? Dude, it's Christmas and one final Christmas sounds scary. Exactly. Like, why is it one final? Is she dying? Like, is Meryl Streep's character tra dying? Like, I really want know what that's all about.
00:53:37
Speaker
Yeah. So ah um I'll watch it. I'd watch it, i think. Yeah. And read it. Yeah. Always read it. We'll book watch it.
00:53:49
Speaker
Yeah. hilu is developing ever flame a tv adaptation based on spark of the ever flame by pen cole and the wider kindreds curse saga with heidi cole mcadams attached as writer and executive producer the fantasy romance follows a mortal woman caught in a dangerous rebellion against a ruling elite blending political intrigue with a central love triangle. The series is still in early development at Hulu 20th Television with no release date or casting announced yet.
00:54:21
Speaker
I have not read these, but every girl in my book club is stoked about this. They are pumped. they have the The ones that have read it are so excited. um i am curious if this is Just because it's in development at Hulu, I'm curious if this had anything to do with ACOTAR not getting fully developed at Hulu. Because if they kind of had to pick one or the other for budget and like attention, um they ended up going with this one.
00:54:52
Speaker
I'm just speculating. I have no evidence that that is the case. i'm Just curious. But if so... If I'm right, that is very interesting that they went with this and not ACOTAR. I think it makes sense because, again, we kind of talked about, like, does Peacock have the budget for something as big and, like, you're going to need a lot of CGI in ACOTAR versus this doesn't seem um like it's going to need quite as much of that kind of budget.
00:55:19
Speaker
So maybe Hulu is the right home was the right home for this story, this adaptation, and not something like ACOTAR. But I'm excited for this. I've heard, like I said, nothing but good reviews. All the girls are pumped. And I love political drama and rebellion and all of those kinds of... those are like Those are my fantasy go-tos is young women just doing the damn thing and fighting the power and rebelling and all of that. And then also if there's a little love in there, yeah, I'm into that. and So I'm excited. I'm excited to read them. I'm excited to watch this and be part of the conversation as this continues to go forward with its development.
00:56:02
Speaker
Yeah, these books are real big on like the book talks and bookstagrams. And I believe – Fantasy Fangirls did a whole series on this as well. um So these are big books in the romantic field.
00:56:18
Speaker
So it's no surprise that it's going to be picked up, especially when we're getting so many fantasy adaptations. I'm still holding out hope for Sarah J. Maas to get some adaptations, but you know, Brandon Sanderson is getting picked up. um There is a lot more that is getting picked up. So again, no surprise, this is getting picked up. um And i I can't wait to see more like fantasy is definitely my favorite genre, both in like TV and books. So to see more fantasy books being put onto the screen, like I think things like Game of Thrones, Harry Potter really set us up for a really good, you know, future.
00:56:56
Speaker
And yeah, I'm excited to read this. It's been on my TBR. But again, so much content, so little time as always. um the description there does intrigue me it sounds like something that uh could really uh grab my attention really well so um i have heard of these i've uh seen them come up here and there as well i'm interested and if we're following for the cast i'll definitely read it i probably would have eventually read it either way because i think my wife's had them on her list as well and we let tend to read things like this together
00:57:28
Speaker
um so she has someone to talk to about them too um the more we do these fantasy uh style books on on a tv show or movies the the cheaper it's going to be to get them coming out more and the more popular they'll get and the more we'll see picked up so even if it's one that i'm not interested in i'm very excited to see more and more of this stuff getting moved to the screen so i'm i'm also with you there Yay for fantasy books being adapted. Keep them coming. Keep them coming.
00:58:00
