Introduction and PSG Match Preview

00:00:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Global Sports partner Podcast Network. My name's Michael, I'll be the host today and this is Tactics Tuesday. Today I'm by myself, it seems like whenever I host I am always by myself. I guess people just don't really like my hosting techniques but today we're going to talk about the upcoming PSG match. I won't go into too much detail because we're going to have a preview tomorrow.
00:00:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But we're going to kind of talk about how they tactically approach the the game and kind of how we can counteract that and what sort what sort of things should look out for. um And then the second half, I'm going to talk about some potential transfer rumours, some in incoming, some outgoings, um just kind of fill out the episode.

PSG's Unbeaten Form and New Strategy

00:00:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. But basically, so to start with, PSG, they are unbeaten in Ligue 1. I know it's Ligue 1, people say it's a farmer's league, but they are unbeaten in Ligue 1. They are playing a very, very good style of play. they're Luis Enrique has got them flying. I mean, getting a manager like Luis Enrique into your team is um it's just a good way of stepping forward.
00:01:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
they really They have changed their sort of approach in recent years. quite drastically. They've changed it from sort of that Galacticos style of recruitment to more of a build build for the future kind of recruitment.
00:01:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I mean, PSG have always had an amazing academy, but they don't really rely on it, which is strange. Like, I mean, players like Nkunku have come from the PSG academy, but haven't succeeded at PSG. They've succeeded elsewhere. Like, yeah,
00:01:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
But they they have all like they are very, very good in their own right. They don't really have any real challenges in Ligue 1. They're a team that kind of, they coast every year and the Champions League is

Tactical Breakdown of PSG's Formation

00:01:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
their main focus. So when it comes to us playing them, um it's going to be very interesting to see how strong their team is. In the last game, they played Lille.
00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Lille set up in a similar sort of way that as we as we do normally. um Obviously, we played them earlier in the season. They set up in a 4-2-3-1 and they lost 4-1 in the end.
00:02:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
All four goals came in the first half and it seems like Lille kind of came back into it in the second half. um But how PSG set up to kind of counter counter that and kind of get the most out of the game,
00:02:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
um they They played in a 4-3-3 with the attacking full-backs being kind of very key to the to the whole system as well and the front three being very tight and close together.
00:02:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
So in this game against Lille, they played Barcola, Gonzalo Ramos and Ousmane Dambéle. Ousmane Dambéle is having an incredible season. um They obviously got rid of Colin Mouane in the summer. He's gone to...
00:03:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Juventus and is playing very well actually but um that is the starting front three um technically they play Douay in midfield um but he kind of becomes a 10 so realistically they kind of set up as a two centre backs then sort of they set they set up very similar to how we do just in out of possession, they kind of defend in that 4-3-3 as opposed to defending in a 4-2-3-1. So in attack, they set up with two deep centre-backs.
00:03:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Their left back is a little bit deeper. Obviously, ours being Trent is a little bit deeper on the right. um It's just kind of a mirror of of the other side. um And then they have Ashraf Hakimi, who has been their statistically best player this season in terms of like average match ratings. He's just been consistently very, very good um and has been pushing those those high standards.
00:04:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
he basically plays as a fullback. He's very similar to ah Jeremy Frimpong, if anyone's familiar with Leverkusen, or he's very similar to um some of the other very attacking fullbacks.
00:04:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
A bit like sort of Robertson in his heyday in terms of like absolutely bombing forwards. Like his average position is basically the the right wing spot. Yeah.
00:04:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then the midfield three kind of stay as a compact sort of diamond with Ruiz being that central pivot and Neves being a bit more of an eight and Due, as I said, being a bit more of an attacker.
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Due kind of drops into the the middle role. He'll be mostly kind of combating Gravenberg. um Neves

Challenges Posed by PSG's Compact Style

00:04:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
will be on that sort of their... It'll be on their left-hand side.
00:04:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
So whether it will be... McAllister and Gravenberge. Gravenberge taking Neves and McAllister taking Due or however we approach this game.
00:05:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
It'll be interesting to see because how they set up is very sort of similar to how we do and therefore... quite a good foil to how we kind of play.
00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Their front three is very compact, very tight together. Ousmane Dembele is playing that sort of Salah role in terms of like stays on the back on the back line, stays on that sort of left back shoulder.
00:05:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um He can come short, he's very technical, but he can also run him behind. um When he was at Rennes, he was quoted as saying, like ah he was asked why he takes free kicks with his right foot and penalties to his left.
00:05:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And he just said, because I want to. um He's one of those players that has no weak foot, um which is really dangerous when you're a fullback coming up against that, because he could go either way. And I think Robertson or Simakas, whoever plays on that left-hand side, is going to have to be really sort of mindful um they don't that they don't get caught out or they don't show them one way and get done and then kind of overcompensate um because he also kind of has um Ramos sort of lurking near him, not entirely like on his shoulder, but it's it the play is more focused on that right-hand side with Hakimi over there, with Ousmane Dembele, with Douai being all on that right-hand side.
00:06:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's going to mean that McAllister, Robertson, whoever plays on left wing, whether that be Gakpo, whether that be Diaz, whether that be Chiesa, any of those players are going to have to really be switched on and help each other out.
00:06:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Hopefully, I think Slott will kind of focus on pinning their full-backs back um just to kind of give a bit of reprieve for our full-backs kind of kind of be able to adapt and kind of work or like not have to get overwhelmed by those attackers. Because I think in a one-on-one situation, we have the better players.
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have the better centre-backs. We have the better midfielders. But when they, if they start overloading us on that right-hand side, Robertson, who has been a little bit suspect or all, all, all season. Um, he's over the recent times, cause we've kind of switched the play a little bit. I'll get into that in a second.
00:07:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, we have kind of changed that to, to sort of suit more what he's about. Um, in terms of like being that flying fullback again, being that extra attacker is pretty much a mirror of this PSG team.
00:07:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, as I said, um, So kind of not getting Robertson overwhelmed and kind of having those that support will be perfect. And I think Salah will be able to keep Mendes like pinned back. And I think that will mean that...
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Baraldo and Neves, who are the right-hand side defensive players, Neves being Baraldo being the centre-back, those players are going to be focused on um on both Salah and Saboslay to some extent, because Saboslay likes to come into those channels, but also likes to drift out to the left.
00:08:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
He has that in his locker to kind of go where he wants now. um now that this system has been tweaked because it has been getting tweaked over the whole season and I think these last few games we've kind of seen obviously not all of them have been um i've been the results that we've been looking for in terms of that we've drawn two of the last five but I mean I'm complaining about not losing here um we We have been playing very, very well and we haven't lost in the league since Nottingham Forest. we have We've lost a few times in different cups. We've lost in the FA Cup, obviously, um against ah Plymouth and we've lost in the yeah EFL Cup as well as the Champions League.
00:08:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Plymouth, we probably didn't take seriously enough. PSV, we didn't take seriously enough. We kind of wanted to kind of get

PSG's High Midfield and Defensive Strategies

00:09:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
the... ah the game over, it like the the whole um period of the Champions League and the league over, just so that we could get into the knockouts, because we were we were first, we were no matter first or second, and I mean, it hasn't actually worked to be first, because we've obviously drawn PSG, and this team is going to be difficult, they like to play with a high line, well, they saying that, they like to play with high line in terms of their midfield and attack push really high,
00:09:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
But they also kind of have sort of a mid-block defence. So their centre-back kind of drop that little bit deeper, meaning that you don't have as much spacing behind, which could be um it it could be one of those things that we could exploit if they are kind of stretching that midfield. We have the runners in there to kind of exploit that space and kind of really get into them and really kind of make life difficult for them.
00:09:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
We could definitely do that. And I think that's going to be an area that Slott's going to be looking at. um So the key areas for me that he's going to be looking at is sort that left-hand channel when Hakimi does bomb forward.
00:10:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Will sort of a Diaz or a Gakpo or a Chiesa be able to exploit that space? I think if it's Diaz, I think we're going to be looking to kind of get in that space, kind of um move the ball quickly, attack where this space Hakimi leaves.
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But if it's Gakpo, I think we'll be wanting to be a bit more secure. kind of this is i mean, this is the first leg. We're away from home. ah we We kind of want to just take our time and and and kind of be be secure. There's obviously no away goal um incentive anymore. So we've got to kind of take this game as being against the best team in France.
00:10:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've already played Lille so far this season. mean, we were okay against them. But I think PSG is a weird one because they're a big team and they can turn up, but they don't always turn up. And i think we've got to keep keep our eye out for whether they do

PSG's Team Dynamics and Bench Strength

00:11:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
turn up.
00:11:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
This team that they've put together is probably the best team that they've had in a long time. In terms of there isn't a Neymar, there isn't a Messi, but it is a team. it's not a It's not two superstars trying to carry the team. It is a proper team.
00:11:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So we are going to really have to adapt. um and kind of tackle those players, those those individual battles really, really yeah intently.
00:11:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
they They do have some players on the bench that we might have to look out for. There's um William Pancho, who we were we we were linked with in the summer, centre-back slash left-back, left-footed centre-back.
00:11:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
um He seems to be getting brought in on for Nuno Mendes when they want to kind of shut down the game. They want to play three centre-backs so that they can kind of just lock it lock it up. um They've got Warren Zaire Emery.
00:12:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very, very talented centre-mid from the PSG Academy. I said they've got a very good academy. um we ah we've been i've seen links with us with him but he is a player who is i'm pretty sure he's still 18 like if we wanted to get him out of psg that would cost us more than anything any amount of money that fsg has ever spent um i highly doubt psg they're well they're not gonna need to
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
kind of tackle PSR, PSR, FFP sort of um regulations, are they? Because they're and they don't need to. um So they're not going to they're not goingnna spend, they're not going to need that money. So I don't think we're getting him out there.
00:13:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've got Kravitz Skelia, who we were kind of linked with at some point. We've kind of, it seems to be a bit of a theme, us and PSG kind of going for the same sort of players, um especially with this new... um This new system that they that they've taken on with recruitment, it seems to be that we're going for the right people.
00:13:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And then Kang Inley, who is a sort of a, he's an attacker midfielder. So I think like there are players that we need to look out for predominantly in terms of,
00:13:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ousmane Dembele, Barcola, Douay and Hakimi. I think they are the key key players. Obviously, with Kravitz-Skelia coming off the bench is also one that we definitely need to keep an eye out for. But um in terms of how they play, they they play in sort of a compact 4-3-3 with the fight flying fullbacks bombing up.
00:13:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
um the three in midfield kind of turns into sort of uh one holding and two flying eight maybe an eight and a ten um and then the three um the three attackers kind of scrunching together make that middle of the park quite congested kind of bring everyone inside so the fullbacks do have that space along the outside to kind of just do what they want um which is really like interesting and you can and you can kind of see how that battle will kind of work out with the likes of Trent versus Barcola, Robertson versus Ousmane Nbele, Salah versus Mendes and sort of Diaz or Gakpo versus Hakimi in terms of like the spaces being vacated by each individual player can be exploited by the opposite number just because these players are so good and it'll be really interesting to really see
00:14:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
what they kind of do, um how how slot approaches this game and how they can really kind tackle different weaknesses in the in the team and kind of try and keep ourselves as secure as possible.
00:15:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
um After the break, I've got to come back and talk about a little bit of transfer rumours as well as maybe touching again on the past Newcastle game, looking forward to the EFL Cup final.
00:15:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah.

Newcastle Game Reflection and EFL Cup Final Preview

00:15:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, welcome back. Hopefully those adverts worked. um I don't know if they did. um But yeah, so welcome back to Tactics Tuesday. ah So just going quickly touch on the Newcastle game from the other day. Obviously, we did a post-match kind of reaction of it and we kind of got that um our initial feelings uh i think some of the good takeaways to take from it was um that we were comfortable i don't think at any point i really felt
00:15:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Worried by Newcastle. um I mean, some of the big news coming from the the games that have happened this weekend, looking forward to the EFL final, is that Gordon is out.
00:16:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Gordon will be out for that game, um which is big news. That is one of their best attackers. um I don't know whether Izak will be available. don't know.
00:16:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
i don't i I think he probably will be, um which will be a little bit annoying because obviously he's one of their biggest threats. But I think when it is when it's Isaac, Harvey Barnes and um Jacob Murphy, I feel more confident than when it is ah when Anthony Gordon's in that combination.
00:16:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
um like i think the I think the game will go well for us. I think we're going to have... um We're going to... ah tackle the game. I mean, Wembley is Anfield South, of course. um like the The key players that to watch out for are sort of are actually like the full-backs for Newcastle. I think Livermanto and Lewis Hall have been amazing all season.
00:17:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And obviously the midfield on their day can be good, but they haven't been playing very well recently. um Obviously just got knocked out Fulham the other day in the FA Cup. So probably going to be looking to kind of make amends. But, I mean, Johnny Heitinger did the job on them um to kind of get them to the point where ah they're not able to compete with us um in the game. So hopefully when it comes to the EFL Cup final, we will be, um i mean, we'll be solid and we'll be doing very well.

Transfer Market Speculations and Strategies

00:17:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So yeah, so in terms of transfer news, um some rumours I've seen. ah what The main one I've been seeing at the moment is a player called Mohamed Ali Cho.
00:17:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
um He is a French player. He was born in France, ah play is quote is eligible to play for France. um He 1.82 metres tall.
00:18:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
was born in 2004, so he's only 21. um Predominantly a right winger, but can play at striker, can play at left wing. um He played for Sociedad, Real Sociedad, for a number of years.
00:18:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Had a very good spell there. His transfer value is um at the moment is 10 million, um, which is really interesting to see that that is where, i mean, it's gone up to 12 million now, but they was bought for 10 million in the summer, uh, or summer previously, March, 2024.
00:18:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:18:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was bought from Sociedad to Nice, £410 million. um but yeah He's had a high of £15 million. I think if we tried to get him out of Nice now, I think it would probably cost us £15-20 million, which for a player that is... He's still very young. I mean, he was bought from...
00:19:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Angers to Sociedad for €13 million. um thirty million euros um So it wasn't a small amount. The one thing I have just seen here on his sort of history is that he did play in the Everton Youth Academy for five years.
00:19:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Which, I mean, if we ended up signing him, I mean, it's not it's not one of those things that's like... Everton fans are going to lose sleep over but just the fact that we would would sign someone who has played in and a blue shirt before would be very interesting um he's ah he's a technical player he's so far this season in 20 games in Liga and he's scored 3 goals and score got 4 assists um so he's not exactly lighting the world on fire but again he's only 21 I think we've been linked with him
00:20:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
just as, cause he's young and we need sort of a strikers. Cause, um, as I'm going come to now, um, we've had some links away for players. Um, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunes being the, the key to there.
00:20:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, Jogo Jota, his market value is £50 million. um The he was he most interested club, according to transfer marks, is actually Arsenal.
00:20:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
um In their current predicament, I can see why. um Obviously not having any strikers is ah is a problem for them. But really, I don't think we should be selling to Arsenal there.
00:20:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
well, they're not even a direct rival, but they're a team up in and around us that like to play ball and football and can kind of get a draw out of us. So we lose, we drop points.
00:20:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's one of those things that like, we are going to struggle to really like, I mean, if we can get 50, 55 million for him, we're making profit.
00:21:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've had a good number of years from him. I think, like, if he was fit, he would be one of the best strikers in the world. But he's just never fit. hermes He's one of those players that, like, he gets into the team for, like, a three-week spell of, like, five, six games. Yeah.
00:21:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
but then just gets injured and is out for a few months. And then he's always kind of getting back to fitness. That's what it feels like. He's never fully there. Darwin Nunes, on the other hand, Darwin Nunes is 25.
00:21:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, so he's not old. He's not young. He's just Darwin. Um, His transfer value is £65 million. I think that is helped by his age um and helped by the price tag previously. I think we're going to want to kind of recoup all our money back in terms of the £85 million. Obviously, we had the link with um Saudi in the in January. We allegedly had had a bid, or we rejected a bid of £75 million for him.
00:22:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
which is insane money for Darwin Nunes. I don't know what they're watching, but I think he's one of those players that has that sort of media attention. And I think if he went to Saudi, he could tear it up or he could be such a good like media campaign, getting eyes on the Saudi league because everyone would just be like, what is happening? It's chaos, pure chaos.
00:22:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think in the summer we're going to want we're going to want to sort of refresh that front line and with Nunes and Jota being two players that have their flaws that we can get rid of, I think those two will be the prime suspects to get rid of.
00:22:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But then...

Summer Transfer Plans and Team Vision

00:22:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
There have also been links about like Luis Diaz wanting to go to Barcelona, stuff like that. Like those sort of players are going to want to kind of find their feet in a new situation, especially if it's, um if like the likes of Gakpo are taking the positions and Chiesa is also fighting for that position. I can see Diaz wanting to get out of there.
00:23:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And as I've said in the past, if we can get sort of,
00:23:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
130 million for the three of them I think that is a good deal I think sort of 50 million for 65 for Nunes Nunes and then mean another 50 for Diaz um i mean another fifty for diaz where we've made all We've made our money back on two out the three.
00:23:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got a large pot to kind of work on to whether we get that choke kit guy who would cost about 15, 20 or whether we get a player like an Isaac out of Newcastle.
00:23:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and kind of There's potential that we use Nunes in that deal. like Could a swap for data from Isaac to Nunes plus some money.
00:24:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
could that be a situation that works best for, I mean, at least Liverpool? I think Liverpool would be coming out better in that situation. But if Newcastle can get some money along with along with a player that they don't have to sort of sign and um and um look for, it'll be it'll work out for them.
00:24:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's really um it's one it's one of those things that like in the summer... Whether we win the league, whether we win the League Cup, I think Slott is going to want to put his own stamp on this team.
00:24:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
um He'll probably want to bring in, if if Trent goes, he'll need to bring in a right back. if if what If two or three of the attackers go, we want to bring in two or three of the attackers to kind of replace them.
00:24:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Unless he's got the confidence in the likes of Jadon Danz or... any of the young boys, Lewis Kumas is playing well for Stoke, Ben Doak is playing well for Middlesbrough, those sort players, whether he's got the confidence in them to step up, I don't know. I think maybe if we sell three of the players, we might buy two and then promote from within and that's a way of keeping sustainable.
00:25:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I think like it'll be interesting to see Slott's stamp on this team because um we've obviously got the Champions League, we've got we've got both the Cups, we've got the Premier League, we've got everything coming us every season. So finding a way to kind of bolster that team and kind of make it fit Slott's sort of way of working, I think will be very key this, uh, this summer.
00:25:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, so that was all we've got time for tonight. Um, sorry, had to listen to just me today rambling for, uh, 25, 26 minutes. Um, apologies about technical area area with the adverts, adverts.
00:25:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, hopefully that will get sorted for next time I host. Um, but yeah, it was, uh, it was lovely doing this and I'll see you soon.
