Hello homies and trainers and welcome to Unknown Radio, your mug stain production Pokemon talk show where we take a peek at every Pokemon. As always, I'm Claudia and I'm here with my co-host and long time partner in Prime Catherine. Hello, as always whilst Claudia smashes out the facts, I bring some unhinged pizzazz. I don't know why I was expecting that to rhyme, but it didn't and I liked it better.

Spotlight on Togepi

00:00:49
Speaker
Today we are coming together for an Easter special and we're going to be looking at number 175 in the Pokedex. We're moving on up and this is our little Easter bundle of joy togepi. Yay!
00:01:08
Speaker
All right, straight off the ball, what do you think his tagline is? The egg Pokémon. No. The... Oh god, what's it gonna be? The shell Pokémon? No. I knew you'd get very angry right off the bat with this. What is it? The spike ball Pokémon. Why is it a spike? No! It's not even spiky!
00:01:36
Speaker
Oh, it is spiky. This head, kind of. Yeah, but like... It's an egg. It's an egg. Yeah. Hence why it's our Easter Pokémon. It is an egg. I will, I will fight the fact that it's an egg for the rest of time. So this little guy is a fairy type, which I believe is our first time touching on the fairy type. I think it is.
00:02:03
Speaker
He is just one foot tall and weighs 3.3 pounds, which equates to 1.5 kgs. Oh, he's so small. He's so small. What does he look like? He's got these little spiky... Okay, fine, he has got spikes on his head. He's like beige, and then he's got like a white egg with little triangles on it. It always reminds me of Nintendo. I think it's because it's red and blue.
00:02:30
Speaker
Oh, like the Nintendo Switch colours? Yeah, but like even before the Switch came out... Was that their logo? Yeah, just associate red and blue with Nintendo. So yes, you're right. It looks like a little guy just peeking out of an egg and its shiny type is kind of like a very light pinky salmon colour.
00:02:51
Speaker
The egg remains the same apart from all the blue spots are red and all the red spots are blue. They just swap the colors up. Well, that's going to confuse me. Just look for the salmon colored one and you know it's shiny. The salmon. All right. So Tokapi's name is derived from the Japanese togi, meaning spike, referring to the top of its head with those spikes that you were talking about.
00:03:18
Speaker
And pie being circle, right? P being the sound a chick or small bird makes. Aww. It's the Japanese onomatopoeia. They go pee pee pee instead of chirp chirp chirp. Aww, get out.
00:03:33
Speaker
And judging by the colorful patterns on its shell, the toe could be might be based on an easter egg, which is a symbol of life. Yay. Easter. Easter. Woo. And then its head shape might be inspired by the tulip cups, which are commonly used for baking cupcakes. Yeah, that checks out. So I like him. He's very cute.
00:03:56
Speaker
He's so cute.

Togepi in Anime and Culture

00:03:57
Speaker
I'll start you off. I'll bring one fun fact now and one fun fact later that would make more sense, which we dive into it. But the first one is that Togepi is the second generation two Pokemon, Ho-wo being the first, that actually appeared in the Kanto saga of the anime before the Johto Pokedex was even created. Oh, I like that. Because Miss D has one, doesn't she? She like carries it around.
00:04:24
Speaker
Yes, and everyone went buck wild, like, oh my god, this is a new Pokémon that's not in any of the games, it's not in our Pokédexes, what is this? And then, so it was kind of seen as a pseudo-legendary for a while. I think it should still be a pseudo-legendary. But there's just a lot of them. Yeah, but, you know, they're cool, aren't they? Yeah, they are very cool. Yeah. Alright, you want to dive right into it? Go on, give me some facts.
00:04:50
Speaker
Okay. The togepi are often seen as symbols of good luck. Popular culture says that they are able to turn kindness and joy into happiness and prosperity, which they then store in their shells. Togepi then shares these emotions with kind-hearted people. I'm sorry, but like, can he get cuter? I know, isn't it just a ham? It's just a ham? Yeah, he's just a ham. He's just cute. That's a new one.
00:05:19
Speaker
In the anime, there is actually a really sad episode because Misty's togopy evolves and then leaves her forever. But there is like this really strange kind of island country way off from the mainland that no one can visit. And in terms of who they crown king or queen, in their history,
00:05:43
Speaker
The person who's in line for the throne cannot become king or queen until they are gifted with a togepi. The universe gives them a togepi and that's their symbol of royalty. I like that. That's cool. That episode makes me cry though. Yeah. And they have this whole togepi alternate dimension in this fairy world where they're just happy all the time.
00:06:07
Speaker
Imagine just being surrounded by loads of little tokapis. And you just feel happy and prosperous. And prosperous. Happy and prosperous. So it makes you wonder why Misty was always a bit of a bitch. Well, yeah.
00:06:29
Speaker
So just being around Togepi or seeing them smile can make someone feel joyful. Conversely, when surrounded by corrupted people or Pokemon, they become weak due to the lack of good energy around them. So they literally are all about the vibes. They're like the number one vibe checker. Oh my god, yes! Take him to a party.
00:06:54
Speaker
So if Team Rocket were to steal Togepi, it would get very weak and potentially die. Aww, that's sad. It eats happiness.
00:07:07
Speaker
It feeds off my joy. So Togepi as a baby Pokémon are also known for their low tolerance for hunger. Same. And if they become famished, they will cry loudly and incessantly until they're fed. After eating, they draw themselves entirely into their shells and take long naps. It's relatable as hell. It is. Like, I love it. I love it so much.
00:07:33
Speaker
So they cry if they're hungry, they won't stop crying, and then they eat, they're happy, and they take a nap. Oh, that's... I'm sorry, but... That's a dream. They're living the dream. Let's get carried around, fed, and sleep. God, what a life.
00:07:49
Speaker
So upon hatching, the togepi view the very first living thing that they see as their mothers, regardless of species or gender. They will refuse to leave the sides of their parents no matter what. Like when a duck imprints on someone. Yeah, and they just follow you around.
00:08:09
Speaker
So as a result the majority of trained tokopi either hatched from eggs or orphaned since tokopi separated from their quote-unquote mothers were refused to do anything even intentionally starving themselves and crying until their parents find and feed them. Oh my god my sons are tokopi.
00:08:32
Speaker
So if anyone else tries to feed them, they say no until they're literally starving to death until mommy comes to feed them. Aww. I like him. IDT. I've got a lot of time. Imagine being in a room of hungry toga pee just screaming. I think I would also scream. It's just an artistic nightmare. Honestly, it's sensory overload. I'm already imagining it. Or a toga pee daycare. Oh god.
00:09:03
Speaker
So going to fun fact number two is due to its tendency to bring luck either good or bad luck, Togepi is possibly based on the- let me pronounce this correctly- it's based on the Dokkakabe which is a Korean mythical goblin that brings bad luck and good luck to anyone. This might explain why Togepi as the Pokemon can have super luck as its hidden ability.
00:09:32
Speaker
I like that. I like the fact that it's based off a mythical goblin. Yeah, just specifically a mythical goblin. I like it when they have some kind of resemblance to cryptids or myths or something like that. Yeah, me too. It makes it so much more exciting. I feel like we learn more. We learn some about other cultures.
00:09:55
Speaker
Right. I didn't even know that there was a mythical goblin in Korean mythology. So that's something. Me neither. And I would like to learn more about it actually. That'll be my weekend plans. Please let me know.

Humorous Theories about Togepi

00:10:07
Speaker
Maybe you can sponsor one of those. Let you sponsor the pangolin. So cute. Are you ready to move on to our question section? I'm ready. Are we on the question section already? Yeah.
00:10:22
Speaker
We don't know a lot about him then, do we? I don't know, but we usually do two Pokémon or two types when we do these episodes, but we just have other good boytogopy. Right, let's go to my question section. I think we could have a lot to say about it.
00:10:36
Speaker
This seems like a nightmare to me just imagining being alone with one. Let's say you were just walking around a nice little fairy garden and there's butterflies. Yeah, there's butterflies. You're feeling really happy and you know what's drawn by happiness.
00:10:55
Speaker
It's togepi. That's right. So you're hanging out and then a little togepi just rolls out of a bush. We'll say it's already hatched because obviously if you were to hatch it and you're its mommy, you have to keep it. You don't have a choice. So this is a little orphan togepi and you can tell he's hungry because there's a little tear forming in his eyes. What would you do? I'm going to give that boy a snack and I'm going to take it home. And you will be his new mommy now? Yeah.
00:11:25
Speaker
Absolutely. It could come to work with me. I'd keep it in a bag. Everywhere I go, the togopy would go. It would pick up good vibes. And it would scream at all of the bad vibes. And that's what I need, actually. I need a constant vibe check with me. It'd stop me making bad decisions, wouldn't it? It's like a living dowsing rod. Imagine taking it on a date. Sorry, my togopy don't like you. Off you go, sweetheart. That means you're bad vibes. You're not good vibes with me.
00:11:54
Speaker
You never have to trust you get again. You've got to take a pee. And you could keep it in one of those like little pouches that people keep babies on their front. Yeah. Just pop them in there.
00:12:04
Speaker
Or one of those cat backpacks so you could see the world. Aww, you know with the little dome in it looking like a little spaceship. Oh yeah, you know the one. His little head just popping out. Alright, so other than, I mean you're not going to use this for battling really are you? But other than battling, what functions would you think a Togepi could be used for?
00:12:26
Speaker
right you know when like people are like oh this week of the office we're bringing in puppies for mental health day yeah back off the puppies whole cage of tokopis because they turn joy and kindness into happiness yeah so you could be depressed but kind he's gonna make you feel great isn't he
00:12:51
Speaker
Yeah, it's gonna single-handedly cure depression. Yeah. Unless you're a bad person. Yeah, and then, well, sucks to be you, sweetheart. You know what I mean? Make better life choices. It could be a good vibe checker, like you said. You can use him for like job interviews or... Yeah, any kind of interview on a date. You can use him on a date. I reckon the government could use these to find terrorists.
00:13:16
Speaker
Yeah, I suppose so. But then it whole begs the question, are you a bad person? If you're a terrorist? Well, yeah, obviously all terrorists are bad people. But like, you know how villains think they're the good guys? That's true. So is like the kindness relative? Yeah. That's interesting. Because yes, they could be a villain, they could be a bad guy, but maybe they're only doing it because they're feeding their family.
00:13:46
Speaker
And that is kind. Yeah. Huh. Because I was going to say like, you could take them into prisons because not everyone in prisons bad person made a wrong choice. That's true. You know, probably not on wouldn't take him to death row. But no, we need to calm down with the death row comments. I can't help it. But no, like, is kindness really? Anyway, that's a deeper question for a Pokemon podcast.
00:14:14
Speaker
And he brings good luck or bad luck to people so it could either be the greatest gift to someone that you love or the worst gift to your enemies. Oh yeah. Just send one of these in the mail. I hope you have the worst time, it won't stop crying. There you go. I'm taking it away. So what do you reckon this little guy eats? Anything.
00:14:38
Speaker
i reckon it would like in the wild we'd talk in like berries and stuff maybe little insects just whatever that is raising this pokemon yeah but i reckon like say you have one i reckon you could just feed it what you eat right like yeah yeah mush it up a bit yeah eat what you eat sit at the dinner table with yay your little high chair
00:15:07
Speaker
You just mush up the food a bit and give it a spoon. You'd have to spoon feed it, I think, because the arms are too small. Yeah, like a- Oh, it just goes face front like a cat. I bet it would love some yo- some yoghurt. Oh, yeah. I reckon it would really like cake. Oh, you could get it like a little smash cake. Oh, god. Imagine. I'd pay to see that. Yeah. I'd pay real money to see that. Real money.
00:15:34
Speaker
Not that fake money. The real one. The real money. Uh, could we eat a togopy? I don't know. I- I- What? I like that we both went very silent there. Because it does look like an egg. Like a soft boiled eggs and soldier egg. Yeah. But I know on the inside there's meat. Mmm. Like a Scotch egg.
00:16:04
Speaker
But inside out, like an inside out scotch egg. I do love me a scotch egg. Me too. But if you were to eat a toga pea, would that be bad luck for the rest of your life? I've got to assume so. Yeah. I've got to assume then you then no longer are a good person. And all the toga peas will hunt you down. Yeah. And fight you with... I feel like if they're gonna fight, they're gonna have to hold a little stick.
00:16:33
Speaker
like wielding a weapon just a togepi with a two-handed axe yeah it's terrifying it would be like a horde of togepi's oh god imagine a load of them running up to you
00:16:49
Speaker
crying. Being in the room of a daycare where all the kids are unhappy. No thanks. No I'm out. I couldn't. I don't think I would eat it. No, I don't think I would. It's just the idea that it's like breaking a mirror. You don't break a mirror and you don't eat autogopy.
00:17:11
Speaker
Yeah, I agree with you. Even as an egg, I love eggs and I'd love a giant egg to eat, but also I don't think the goo inside would be the same.

Ethical Considerations around Togepi

00:17:21
Speaker
There's gotta be, cause he's obviously got bones and eyeballs.
00:17:26
Speaker
Yeah, but it depends if the egg comes like a chicken egg, or whether it comes just... Okay. I reckon we could eat a toga pea if it's not hatched yet. Okay, so like an egg? Yes. Like if it was an unfertilized egg, like a chicken's egg, we could eat it. Yeah, perfectly fine. Yeah. Perfectly right. And that would make a bloody good soldier's...
00:17:49
Speaker
situation. be massive. ah i think the size of the scotch ache you'd make with animal eyes bad boys. ah i'd get so sick but yes i reckon if it's fertilized and gotten to the point where autography has been formed i think that would you in bad luck territory there. yeah i agree.
00:18:08
Speaker
I like how this is like a popular topic right now. Like when the fetus becomes a baby. All right. So where would you be? I would say you're back in a nice little fairy garden, you know, a butterfly park. They're flickering around. Absolutely wonderful. And you're not watching your footing very well and you trip.
00:18:37
Speaker
over a toga pee taking a nap it wakes up it starts crying um it grabs a weapon who would win in a fight you the toga pee oh i know i tried to make it grab a weapon to make it sound more threatening i'll just step on it yeah but then i wouldn't want to kill it because then i feel like i'd then be a bad person and all the toga peas would hate me but i definitely rough it up a bit just rough it up don't kill it yeah i just pick it up and
00:19:06
Speaker
No! You know, like a real firm nope. And then now you're its mommy. Yeah. And that's how I brought home a toga pee. Sorry, I put him in timeout and now he's living with me forever. Come on, bloody get rid of him. So that's it for our little boy toga pee. What do you reckon? I love him. I loved him before, but I love him more now.
00:19:32
Speaker
Yeah. I love him so much. And then it's super interesting how because he is a fairy type and I didn't know all of this that they actually added in some like special skills like luck and then the happiness and the misfortune thing. It's very interesting.
00:19:49
Speaker
I love the fact that he like feeds off good vibes and that he's based on the creature. It's just all round. Like I just, I think he's really interested in actually. A little bit more than just the kind of useless ball that was, it was cute, but there's a lot of cute Pokemon. Yeah. Loads of cute. But this has got like, I dunno, a little bit of extra pizzazz and you know me, I love the pizzazz. And I was just thinking pizzazz in my head and I was like, if you're not going to say it, I'm going to say it.
00:20:18
Speaker
Always. I always say it's my favorite word.

Easter Wrap-Up with a Twist

00:20:22
Speaker
All right. So after this, we're back to our regular scheduled programming and we're going to dive right back into the, uh, nido palooza or whatever we decided to call it. The nido snooze fest. Nido snooze fest? No, because we want people to listen. It's great. We love it. It's so much fun. So interesting. And you know what? The big one has tits. So.
00:20:48
Speaker
So you can skip the first two, but the last one has titties. So if you're here for the titties and staying for the titties, we've got some for you. So happy Easter, everybody. And we hope that Atogope will find you and give you good fortune if you're a good person. If you're not... Sucks to be gay because this one's gonna find you. He will find you and he will kill you with a two-handed axe. Or a stick.
00:21:19
Speaker
All right, toga... I have nothing. Well, I'll hatch you later. And happy Easter. Yeah? All right, that'll do. Bye!
