Speaker: All right. hi everyone, and welcome to Pesci6101, where we discuss everything about the world of Psyche and the antics of Sean and Gus in Sunny Santa Barbara. I'm Skylar, and this is my partner Pazuzu.

Speaker: And today we'll be talking about season four, episode four of the famed TV show Psyche. The devil is in the details, dot, dot, dot, and in the upstairs bedroom, dot, dot, dot. Very nice.

Speaker: So a reference to, obviously, The Exorcist, which we also watched. Very much a true homage to The Exorcist. Yes. which tuition Not to not to a... Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: But then also I i like the whole devil's in the details thing because that is kind of our through line throughout this episode. Yeah, very true. But also devil in that word, you know, demon. It's in the details and in the upstairs bedroom. Correct. Makes sense.

Speaker: Very nice title for them. So, yeah, so we watched the original Exorcist. How many are there? There are like three or four? they No, there's more than one. Yeah, at least three because I know I saw things about Exorcist 3. Okay.

Speaker: Let's see. Wow, I cannot type. I keep writing Ex-Persist. Yes. And I keep going back and deleting it and then doing it again. typed Ex-Persist like three times. Lots of perspiration. Yeah.

Speaker: up Okay, let's see. Okay. Related media. It looks like there's sequels and prequels.

Speaker: Oh, interesting. And the TV show. Oh, okay. So there's, guess it's a a franchise. It's quite the lore, apparently. In its way. and And it's based on a book, the original.

Speaker: Oh, is it called The Exorcist, the book? Yes. Okay. And the screenplay, I think, was written by the author of the book. Oh, all right. So. I like when that happens. Yeah. I feel like you're more faithful to the source material then.

Speaker: but Okay, now I'm going to search how many exorcists are there, but I think it might just give me ah the world the human people who are performing exorcists. but Yep, lists of exorcists. There you go. How many exorcists are there in the Catholic Church? Do we want to know? um Yeah, why not? Let's find out. Sounds interesting.

Speaker: At present, the International Association of Exorcists has 905 members. hundred five memories my god Wow. That's more than I was going to guess. I was going to guess like 22. Oh, the number of priests approved by bishops as exorcists is growing throughout the world.

Speaker: This was in 2023. Interesting. interesting

Speaker: Also increasing are those associated to the International Association of Exorcists, which have quadrupled in 10 years. Wow. so exorcism on the rise. yeah Who would have thunk?

Speaker: was going to say it's a big, like kind of a plot point in both our source material, the exorcist yeah and the episode that yes it's out of fashion.

Speaker: Right. Well, so and that was something I wanted to talk about with the movie in particular. The movie is called The Exorcist. Yes. And I feel like we barely see The Exorcist. Yeah.

Speaker: Although we do start with him. We do. I was so confused for the first 20 minutes. it's like... Okay. On the line for the ride. i know. i well And remember, but I watched this with my mother who watched this when she was a child. She's like, i don't remember this. Is this right? By the end it...

Speaker: And again, i mean, I know High Noon I watched in like 10 parts. By the way, the song from High Noon yes has been stuck in my head for ah weeks. It's very catchy.

Speaker: It is very catchy. They played the whole movie. yeah Okay, so put that over there. This is also a great song in The Exorcist. Very spooky. And iconic. It was another one like watching Halloween where I was like, oh my God, what's wrong? And I don't know if i mainly know it because...

Speaker: It is straight up used in the episode, right? Correct. Or if it's not, it is a near copy. Yeah. Yeah. first I was like, okay, they're just like suggesting it, but then it got to the scene where they get to the house and I was like, no, that's it. Literally. Yeah. Literally like a shot for shot. Yes. Hog in the darkness, silhouetted. Yeah. Like the whole thing. Yeah. love it. So good. But yes, I do feel like that was...

Speaker: interesting yes i think that we like didn't yeah we start with him he goes that goes away and and um what i was gonna say was i think i watched this in in two parts the first half and the second half and then yeah and by the end by the time they were bringing him back i was like oh right like i had forgotten even while watching it i had forgotten yeah well and like ah I don't even remember. We maybe got his name like once, like while we were there. And then like he shows up again. was almost like this fleeting, like, I'm giving you this information and maybe come back later. Maybe it won't, you know, kind of a thing. Yeah. Well, it did remind me of the mummy.

Speaker: Yes. Oh, very much Which we watched. Yeah. And I felt like, and I know with The Mummy, or as I recall, with The Mummy, we talked about like this sense of like messing with things you don't understand.

Speaker: Totally, and totally. And I feel like even if, like, I don't know that they ever answer... Well, I don't think they ever answer like how this happened. like how At least not in this movie.

Speaker: Yeah, true. yeah um How Reagan ended up possessed. right Where this demon came from. How it got to her. um And, I mean, the opening scene, there's not like a whole lot of...

Speaker: exposition or dialogue like about like I mean he seems a little freaked about what they unearthed he goes and sees the statue like all these things but they never tell us outright what's going on right this just makes kind of spooky yeah yeah mybe yeah yeah um and it it just yeah it just made me think of the mummy like it being like just something from a long ago time. And even though like we never come back to that site or like, like that doesn't really have a lot of bearing on the rest of the movie. Like it set me up feeling like we're dabbling.

Speaker: Yes. Yes. Yeah. vi cold in the yes yeah Yeah, it definitely made me feel spooked from the beginning. Yeah. We've unleashed something or something is has been unleashed upon us.

Speaker: Yes. Yeah, I think we referenced this at the end of the last episode when we started talking about the fact that we we were going to watch The Exorcist. um Watching today, i think I would call it like spook spooky. I don't know if I would call it scary. I will say it made me incredibly uncomfortable, like just in general. Like I was not expecting this demon to be anywhere near as sexual as he was. Yeah. hurting herself i know it was like my heart was breaking up like oh the real implications of what was happening to her like the physical bodily yeah effects of that yeah

Speaker: That was disturbing, which. Yes. Disturbing. That is a great word. It should I guess, is what we're dealing with. herving Yeah. And like, yeah. just So, and yeah. So incredibly disturbing. Made me so incredibly uncomfortable. There wasn't a point where I, like, I think I maybe told you on the side. There wasn't a point where I was like, ah, like there was no jump scare, like screaming or anything like that. Right.

Speaker: which I don't necessarily think there needs to be in a scary movie. Exactly. um Maybe my expectations were different because my mother was like, it's the scariest movie I've ever seen in my entire life. Oh, well, something that was interesting, ah I did read the Wikipedia, as I want to do. And um it talked about, like, people people, like, passed out and, like, attacked the screen and, like, sued Warner Brothers and stuff. like Really? intense stuff It reminded me of, like, those those stories or the story of how, like, people seeing the first footage on film of a train coming, like, yes

Speaker: losing their minds that they were going to take it by a train. right Like that's the vibe of like just that, those stories in this, um, in the Wikipedia about it.

Speaker: But, um, I think the main thing they were like reacting to was the very real like medical procedures. Um,

Speaker: Oh, I literally couldn't watch those. Yeah. I think, and it's interesting. It wasn't, it wasn't the exorcism. Like it wasn't her. yeah it was the medical stuff because it was like so grounded. And it's, it sounds like the people performing, particularly the one where they like went in her neck to like look at her brain and blood was like spraying out.

Speaker: I think Skylar's really wincing. yeah But I think those are real doctors. Oh my God. That were like extras for the, like to make it as realistic as possible. So I think that was really what got people. And i I get that. Like that was very disturbing to look at to I literally looked away from my mom works in medicine. So I was like, you tell me when this is over. i know I'm going to vomit if I watch this. So I, yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: that's pretty crazy i mean that i totally get i it takes a very special kind of person to be able to do that kind of stuff yes thank god for them yes oh my gosh thank goodness for them indeed yeah it i thought the the movie was very interesting too and like this idea that i thought let me read let me start from the beginning yeah I thought it was interesting that, you know, when when was this, in the 70s? 73. There you go. um I find it very interesting that in the 70s, this mom was so willing to look at, like, any possible mental health, any possible physical illness at all. Mm-hmm.

Speaker: First. Well, I do think. I, like, exhausted all of that. I do think you like kind of see it escalate in a sense. Like first here to the doctor. Yeah. And then it becomes psychology.

Speaker: And then it becomes exorcism. And I also think it was really fascinating that the priest, that Father Karras is not just a priest, but a psychiatrist. Yes. interesting. Like that was like...

Speaker: Yeah, just like a super compelling yeah choice because it does create, I mean, it's a very unique... I mean, yeah, I think it makes sense from the standpoint of like, this is an illness of the mind, right? Like this demon is coming and attacking your mind and how you see the world and what's happening, you know, and then that is what degrades the Yeah, well, he even says like, because she's like, when...

Speaker: I don't know if she asked when the last time or how to go about her or whatever, how to get an exorcism. and And he explains that like, we stopped performing exorcisms once we understood mental illness, basically. right right And so like that...

Speaker: puts him right in the middle of these two ideas. Right. um and when It's interesting, too, because what it does is it says both are real, right? People will utilize mental illness to say that, at least in this world, people will utilize mental illness to say, oh, we did that because, like you said, we didn't understand. So there really weren't demons. It was just a lack of understanding of something. He is saying, or we are saying through this movie, there can be mental illness, but But there can also be legitimate demons. Like, it can be both. Yeah. Yeah. And the reality of this movie, obviously the demon exists. Right. And they do kind of present this, like, exactly like it's presented in the Psych episode where there's this kind of old guard that still respects the demon, I guess, in a way. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, still, like, acknowledges that that can happen. And then there's these younger priests who are, like,

Speaker: No way. But then within the actual, like, church, like, the Catholic Church within the context of this movie, I have no idea how it operates or what things outside of this. But within the movie, yet yeah. um Like, even though it doesn't happen often, the...

Speaker: the lore around it and the rules around it are still there and still referenceable and part of it and he's still able to get the evidence and bring it to the hype whatever guy and get permission and they bring in the exorcist and stuff so it's like all of the the process around it still is there, even though they're like, we don't really believe in this anymore.

Speaker: Right. Yeah. It's still a possibility. Yeah. Which i warm I guess is kind of what he's dealing with. Like, because when he's introduced, he is like,

Speaker: she overhears him you talking about feeling like a fraud. so he is kind of dealing with these like crisis crises of faith and um like what does he believe in? And I think, like again, having him be a psychiatrist and an academic...

Speaker: Like there there are these kinds of, i don't I feel like there's ideas that like if you are a very like religious person, maybe like the more you learn about science and stuff, the less that will satisfy you perhaps. um And maybe he is like kind of in that position where he doesn't feel that connection to his faith. But then it's like, this is a very striking yeah example of a very like old,

Speaker: outlandish reality yeah for him to contend with yes yeah yeah and it's interesting i it almost kind of feels like in the movie that he doesn't even yeah the main guy kind of our main character once we get past to the the first 20 minutes in egypt um he it It really kind of seems like he he doesn't even fully necessarily believe, or he tell me if you got the same gist, until he's like in there with the other exorcist and they are literally like throwing holy water on her and her head's spinning around and she's puking.

Speaker: Before then, he still seemed a little skeptical. i think that's true, and I feel like... um Yeah, he's in an interesting position because... totally after his interaction with reagan ah possessed regan or with pazu with the demon the unnamed demon um he seems almost like skeptical in the other way. You know, he's like, me I think his faith in how obviously mental illness this is, is also shaken. Like he just yeah doesn't know what's what's going on. Yeah.

Speaker: And I think like he's, yeah, I think he's skeptical enough or he's just like lost enough. Yeah. That he's like, well, like he's got his recordings. Like it is all a little bit wild. And like he doesn't, I think like in the way we stay with him, like in the night and stuff and he's listening and he's freaked. And we see, I think we see him get jump scared.

Speaker: um When like the phone rings or something while he's listening to his tapes. Yes. He has like that nightmare and stuff. Like, oh so he is like he doesn't know what is going on either and so it's like yeah i was like okay i guess we'll try it and then right chris the mom is looking to him and like her desperation is i know this poor mom i know i really liked her me too really liked her loved just like that for a horror movie like

Speaker: There was so much to like grab onto kind of like yeah the relationships and stuff. And like, so like you really wanted Reagan to get through this. oh my God. was And such a great, like, or such a beautiful example of like a mother's like yeah dedication to her child and like unconditional. Yeah. Yeah. yeah And she's like, that is not Reagan. Yeah.

Speaker: Oh yeah. No. Yeah. And she'll do anything. Like, i do like that, that we see this progression. Like, when they first ended up at the doctor, I was a little, like, I didn't notice kind of what Chris was noticing that even brought them to the doctor. Did you feel like you did? You know, it was a couple weeks ago that I watched this movie, so I don't necessarily know. But...

Speaker: No, I i think in in the moment I was maybe just like, huh, maybe things are just feeling kind of weird. So she just wanted to like check that she was okay. You know, like maybe she was just seeming a little off.

Speaker: Yeah. One, I feel like that's really... interesting like that she yeah because it didn't take much i feel like for her to sense that something is off yeah and well i mean it seems like the it was pretty much the two of them against the world like the yeah father or the husband or whomever wasn't really in the picture they didn't have any other siblings or children So it was really just the two of them in what seemed to be a new house, a new location for them because of whatever movie she was filming. And they were going to be spending. Yeah, that's really an interesting element, too. There's just like so many interesting choices about these characters. Like she's a super famous actress. Yes.

Speaker: He's a psychiatrist slash priest, the psychiatrist of the priests. I don't know. Yeah. um and then there's like this Jesuit university like i don't know there's just so many layers that we were yeah that were so interesting um but yeah i they definitely have like a really beautiful bond the yeah mother and daughter that it's really easy to get invested and I also loved like the household yeah like I don't know who that other young woman was i i know at the front of it I was like is she an older daughter is she maybe like a nanny is she an assistant but whoever she was yeah

Speaker: Chris being an actor, I guess she must be like an assistant, but, um, she was yeah like, wow, that she was dedicated. oh my God. Yeah.

Speaker: I mean, that whole staff, like as hard as Chris kind of is on them, especially in the beginning, ah particularly of like the household staff, less so her assistant, if that's what we're calling her.

Speaker: yeah Um, but, Like the fact that they stuck around through all that. Yeah. i Yeah. I can't even imagine like the, the bed itself. I saw that bed up in the air rocking. Like it was rocking. I would have been like I'm out of here. yeah Love you, but I am out of here. No way.

Speaker: Yeah. And I guess we kind of see, I don't know what to make of like that last moment with the assistant. um both saying goodbye yeah because it seems like chris is like are you sure you don't want to come or whatever and she she's like gonna so i guess just stay in washington don't know what she's up to maybe she's like a tutor or something i don't know um but like maybe she felt like committed enough to see them through that. But then was like, let's, amend I gotta go do my own thing.

Speaker: Yeah. This was a lot. I need a moment to breathe. could be. Yeah. Or maybe she's just like, i do we know where they're going? Are they going back to wherever they came from? ah think she does talk about where they're going, but I don't know. I didn't catch it.

Speaker: Yeah. So maybe this woman, you know, this other woman lives in Washington, D.C. and her family's there and she doesn't want to you know, move across the country possibly. But it did feel like. um I don't know.

Speaker: A kind of a heavy choice that was oh totally made to like separate yeah from them. Yeah. I mean, they they went through literally hell or high water. So I'm sure they are bonded for life now. Yeah.

Speaker: Oh, yeah. I'm sure that was a hard choice. But yeah, I mean, it was a I'm glad we watched it. Yeah, no, I really liked it. I loved all the characters. i loved, i and also like, as much as am aware of it, o I think there are things I have heard that I didn't even connect to it. Like, um the power of Christ compels you. Yes. Yes.

Speaker: And I had another moment of similar to with Breakfast Club and Scottish ship when she comes down and she's like, you're going to die up there. I'm like, where do I know that? And it's of course it's head of Sean. um Yeah, this, oh, great segue. This episode with so much fun.

Speaker: like Yes. Apart from it being like and homage and the homage itself being very fun, the like interaction between Sean and Gus in this whole episode was so incredibly interesting. I feel like we haven't really seen them so at ah so visibly at odds.

Speaker: Yeah. yeah yeah And I feel like we were just talking about um like Gus as like lead investigator.

Speaker: Weren't we just talking to about that? like Because we were... Yeah, we were talking about we were talking about like the psychic the psychicness. Like, sean is and would he ever... like He doesn't really claim that, but in this, it's like, right he is the lead. He is the lead. here He is the lead. yeah um and I mean, even how they get on this case is like so interesting because Sean is stubbornly like, this is suicide, which is yeah feels so unlike him. And is it just because of Father Wesley?

Speaker: Or maybe just like the religious component to it. Like he's, it seems like at least what we get from the flashback is Sean is a very, as he's been trained to be, he's like a very kind of rational questioning kid.

Speaker: And it seems like that led to a lot of friction between him and yeah Father Wesley when he was a younger and when Sean was going to the church. So maybe it's just like, you know, he's got a little bit of-

Speaker: Well, who knows? They might have gone to the other church afterwards. That's true. Father Wesley was pretty much like Lee. They shopped around. i feel Yeah, away. I know. Aren't there rules about... i have no idea. Participating in these things if you're Catholic. I don't know. Oh, the exorcism thing? Probably. Well, not the exorcism, but life even just like going to the... I mean, i think you can go, but like to take communion and stuff, I think you have to be...

Speaker: Yeah. i knows or whatever yeah And even confessional. I know it's usually like they want people a part of the church doing confessional. But i do know that there are instances where people will um like make exceptions, you know, it's kind of depending on like whom it is. So I guess it is an interesting It's interesting, like, how we see them.

Speaker: Because Henry's in uniform, right? Yes. It's like he was coming from work. Yeah. i So he was not at um church. I wonder if Sean just went with the Gusters. Or maybe – I always thought it was, like, Sunday school or something. Like, they were – But didn' had like i don't want isn't Sunday school, like, with class? Or with – during church? Yeah. It would be on Sunday during church hours. Yes.

Speaker: So I get – I mean – And the way Father Wesley talks to them, he's like, maybe you guys can drive this other church as if they are members of this one. I feel like. Correct. Yes. So presumably they're all Catholic, which is, don't know, just kind of interesting.

Speaker: Yeah. definitely interesting I could see him going to church with the Gusters. i do Yeah. But then I do. I think the way Father Wesley like addresses them, it's as if they're all members Yeah, and by name. knows them.

Speaker: Yeah. um So, yeah, I feel like they just they are also part of it. Oh, yeah. Could be. That would make sense.

Speaker: Just two little kids yeah hanging about at Sunday school. Yeah. um Yeah, so we got all that.

Speaker: ah But Gus is very Once again, he will happily accept the explanation given. yes and The Bible story we're talking about is the Ark.

Speaker: Yes.

Speaker: And Sean's like, how are all these animals together? Like, what they eat each other? blah but yeah And Gus says something like, through the power of God's love or whatever. they're here Yeah. And he's content with that. And Sean, of course, is not.

Speaker: Yeah. Sean's like, well, if he has, like, all this great, amazing power, like, don't you just build the ark for Noah? Like, wow. Oh, yeah. Yeah. because God wants his creations to do that or whatever. Right. Exactly. um And I love when Henry, like Because, you know, as much as he's trying to get Sean to kind of conform, he's also like, they have this in common. he's like, okay, well, let's talk through this. Like, what would be his m MO? Yeah.

Speaker: talking to a tiger or whatever yeah well why don't we break this down here who do we got we've got noah a boat load full of animals what would be his mo father wesley is like this is not a detective case henry that was hilarious and just so perfectly like henry Yeah, so funny. great I love, too, in this interaction, we get, like, our first little reference to the the details. Because Henry's like, Sean, I think you're getting a little too hung up the details of, like, how would a koala get here? Like, what what do you mean? what How would the lions not eat the zebras? Like, how long are we on this boat for? You know what i mean

Speaker: And Sean's like, really? You told me the details are everything in life. oh Yeah. That's true. I mean, literally, in his actual verbiage speech and what he's taught him, like, the details...

Speaker: Or the Bible, you know? Which is why it's so interesting. With this case, i mean, I guess he is, Sean is observing things that suggest to him that she had reasons to commit suicide.

Speaker: Right. But he is like not willing to, which is so his thing, he's not willing to like take any extra leap. And I feel like he is, we have seen him be far more likely to just jump to murder when the evidence for that is very thin or apparently non-existent. Right. Or literally non-existent in some people. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. So i I don't know if he just is like wants to be contrarian. He doesn't want to be there. Probably a little of both knowing him. i mean, I feel like Sean too is very much that kind of person like,

Speaker: even though he maybe would never admit it, like he, he is really the driving factor in a lot of the things that they do. So maybe in this case, when suddenly it's like Gus is saying, like, we're going to do this. Yeah. Maybe he is a little contrary. And if he's not like completely on board with it right from the jump.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. And that kind of is like his kryptonite, like that. He, he can't really take a leap. That's not his own. Yeah. Yeah. Well, and that's a whole a whole side conversation that happens in this episode with Henry and Sean.

Speaker: Sean essentially saying to Henry, like, what do you do when your partner thinks something's happening and you totally don't agree? And Henry's like... You put faith in him because one day when you have a crazy idea, they'll put faith in you. and then, of course, Sean's like, well, what happens when they're totally wrong and you know they're wrong? what favorite Wrong, wrong, wrong,

Speaker: dog you funny youweedyw just so yeah This is after Henry told him to be like respectful. Yeah, do it as respectfully as possible. Yeah, I mean, after that, once he's finally like, you're wrong, I'm right, let's go. Like you know, they go and they actually figure it out. Yeah, but I do love that in this, when all is said and done, they are both little bit wrong and a little bit right. Oh, yeah, totally. Like they,

Speaker: um They really sort of, I guess, need each other and complement each other. Very true. But, yeah, it's just, is i don't know, it's very compelling to me that he just would not would not do it.

Speaker: And continuously doubles down, like doubles, triples, quadruples down. Like, he was really not having this case. Yeah. I mean, even at one point, Vic asks, like, are you on the case? Presumably saying, like, are we going to pay you? And Sean's like, no And Gus is like, yes. like I mean, they have like a mini tiffle. Yeah.

Speaker: i do I feel like it must have at least something to do with Father Wesley and his just like Sean's like just unwillingness to be there. Yeah. That wouldn't surprise me.

Speaker: Yeah, because it's it is such an extreme reaction yes for him. Oh, and that's a good point. Yeah, he doesn't originally know that it's Father Wesley.

Speaker: They just know that it took, Sean just knows that it took place at St. Attalus and that Gus told him there would be girls in Catholic schoolgirl uniforms. And he's like, all right, fine, we'll go check it out. And then when he sees Father Wesley. that whole run is so weird, too. Oh, my God, so crazy. Yeah.

Speaker: And then he sees Father Wesley and he's like rolling his eyes and like not about it. Then it's like he's really sticking his foot in. It is really funny where I write that down. That whole thing. Oh.

Speaker: Because like Sean realizes that ah Gus... wants to see somebody there and yes sean's like we'll get this party started tonight tonight

Speaker: and then he's like trying to you know set gus up or whatever and then it turns out to be father wesley yeah

Speaker: <unk>s where where are all the girls in the Catholic school gore uniforms? That is a bagpiper. yeah

Speaker: Yeah. sounds is So Sean has some weird moments in here with women. Yes. Yes. That. And then also later when, uh,

Speaker: what's her face lucy lucy is like you're cute and i was like so are you really young it's like sean sean how old is she like 17 yeah mean they're in college so probably is it college i thought i was thinking it was high school i thought Oh, I always assumed it was college. College, I guess, is a little better.

Speaker: and Well, yeah. i've always assumed that they were living away. I mean, I guess my my reference to high school does not have to do with, like, sleep away high school. Do you know what i mean?

Speaker: it certainly could be. Well, you're right. And we see both. Because a Lucy lives at home, question mark? Question mark. We see her at home.

Speaker: We don't see her dorm room. So maybe local call live at home. Yeah. Yeah. But the boyfriend lives at school, which yeah kim in high school, in like a boarding school or or college, I feel like both of those could be true.

Speaker: Yes. Yes. I would agree. so I don't know if that helps us really, but I guess maybe we'll give the benefit of the doubt and call it. college um i wonder if we could find like a picture of agatha and her sweatshirt and maybe it says probably oh anne oh yeah yeah what was the school called saint yeah because i might say like

Speaker: St. Atlas College Divinity School. College. Okay. Yeah. Although I don't know why college divinity school sounds like you're trying to convince us that it's a college, but it's not actually a college. Do you know what I mean? Yeah. Like college prep or something. Yeah. Yeah. They do have high schools like that that are like called college preparatory academies. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. College Divinity School.

Speaker: Harvard Divinity School.

Speaker: church divinity school of the pacific berkeley i'm just looking at like other examples of things that are phrased like that yale divinity school okay so um maybe it's just the go on this like wiki it says father peter wesley is a priest and a teacher at saint atlas college in santa barbara okay Okay, I like that better because I'm like, Sean, why are you yeah trying to creep on teenagers?

Speaker: No, no. Which maybe they're still teenagers, but ah also a college though would not have uniforms. I don't know. It's all weird. It's all a little weird. Yeah.

Speaker: yeah

Speaker: So. yeah My other favorite line in this scene when ah they see Father Wesley in there, they go over to to talk to him and he goes, my favorite little skeptic. And Sean goes, that's why my friends call me skepty. They will. Skepty.

Speaker: Yeah, I mean, and what do you think Father Wesley thinks of Sean? In the flashback, he is, like, kind of seems like maybe he's got his hands full and isn't sure Like, he has a good humor about it.

Speaker: Yes. But he, he and i I don't know how serious he is about, like, take your business elsewhere. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, ah like, during the actual body of the episode, he is, like, seems to like Sean just fine and yeah amused by him and...

Speaker: Yeah. I wonder, I'm not particularly well-versed in priest, but I feel like, ah you know, I would hope that, maybe rather is a better way to put that, I would hope that someone in a position where it's supposed to be like accepting and loving and we're like trying to be kind to other people, I would hope that he'd be like, you're a little weird.

Speaker: I'm okay with it. You know, like, you'll be you. Like, we'll we'll get you to come around, you know, so like, maybe you're not as easy to convince as Gus.

Speaker: But, you know, I'll still pray for you or whatever.

Speaker: Yeah, I mean, I definitely think he is feels like that. and And I almost I don't know, I get the impression and he is working at a college like, yeah, again, and don't know how.

Speaker: ah realistic it would I'm sure there's a lot of closed-minded people at various colleges yeah with anything of any kind of creed or whatever um but it does seem like Father Wesley is pretty open and also he's presented as kind of like a again like the old guard and kind of with old-fashioned ideas but it's interesting

Speaker: Because it's almost like his mind is more open because he's open to these old ideas. This is very Sean from last episode. I am able to be objective because Gus is so subjective.

Speaker: Yeah. you will. I'm able to be open-minded because of the fact that everybody else might be very close-minded or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, ah just and because we're talking about the bits, of course, one of my other favorite bits that I reference all the time is the jingle bit.

Speaker: Oh my God, I know. They're talking about like... I was like, we should have had muffins. Oh. Why do we should have had muffins? Darn it. At the after show, we'll have muffins. Oh, that's a good idea. We should write that down.

Speaker: Yes. Right. So because Father Wesley knows them, they don't have to introduce themselves because he knows they're Sean and Gus. They instead talk about like what they're doing nowadays. So, um you know, Sean says that he's a psychic detective or we're psychic detectives. And Gus is like, no, he's the psychic detective. I'm a pharmaceutical sales rep. And Sean goes, we also do commercial jingles.

Speaker: that's no we don't and Sean we will um bum bum bum muffins it was like a running gag throughout the episode he was so really difficult But yeah, this thing, this thing, which did you see what this thing was?

Speaker: Was it, Oh, was it the three whole punch? We get that now. very whole bunch and at the end, Holy

Speaker: ghost. love that little moment. And Father Wesley being like, I like that. Holy ghost. like yeah it' so cute It does kind of feel like,

Speaker: um They come to understand at the end. Yes. Well, yeah, I love that little confessional and scene that we had where first, like, Sean's apprehensive to go in there. Obviously, he's he said he hasn't been to confession in 15 years, so maybe he...

Speaker: Maybe they stopped going to church. Who knows? Or maybe he just didn't with Henry. Yeah. I can't imagine he would go on his own accord. So like once they kind of grew out of that and people get busy, you know. and Yeah, it happens. But I like that the little back and forth. Like, you know, Father Wesley wasn't really judgmental at all. I mean, he was like that. Yep. That's a that's a bad one.

Speaker: That's a bad one, too. Yeah. also a bad one like but he was there like kind of matching sean's energy almost and i really did enjoy the fact that sean was i mean sean was pretty honest other than saying outright that he's you know lying about being a psychic he said he steals he said he lies you know yeah it was interesting how he talks about lying let me scroll all the way down to the end to the end as we always do um

Speaker: He's like, let's start with the lie. I do it all the time. And then he very quickly like shifts gears. It's like he doesn't want to talk about it, which I find very interesting.

Speaker: Yeah. I mean... i I kind of get it. right like He knows implicitly lying is not great. He admits it to the priest. Lying's not great. But at the same time, I almost wonder if he was to really sit down with himself and be like, I lie constantly. like That's got to be kind of a reckoning for him to go through and be like, what am I doing? you know Yeah, well now I'm thinking as we're sitting with this, like of lot of lot

Speaker: lion ryan i'm like lion lion lion um how insecure he is in that episode and like how personally he takes it and it's like yes great so hard for him to watch everybody like discount this guy because yeah himself in him um and so it is it's something like like he is not prepared to examine bill unless it's like yeah forced in like put in front of his face i couldlion write brian um and you like and he like of is confronted with his own lies yeah yeah and maybe that's part of like his discomfort with this whole m thing

Speaker: um

Speaker: just I mean this one element of confessional that like

Speaker: this is in theory a person that you would tell the things you know you've done wrong and like he doesn't want to face those things. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. Well, and,

Speaker: You know, life is incredibly gray. We talk all the time about like things being very black and white. And this feels like a very black and white kind of thing. Like either it's not something you're supposed to do or it's something you're supposed to do. That's not saying that I condone lying by any means. But in lying, it's not as if Sean is hurting anybody. Like he is, in fact, helping people. So it's like a much more nuanced topic.

Speaker: and maybe like a much more difficult thing to examine than just being like i lie and lying is bad you know even though yes we shouldn't be lying but still do you know what I mean and that i any sense yeah well it is complicated and it's also like his lies are helping people but they are hurting people too like the fact that you know like nobody can really be close to him or know him or trust him because of what he's doing. Yeah. Even if they don't know that they can't do that, like it will.

Speaker: Right. Come around eventually. oh gosh. I know. That's going to be toughie. It's going to be a toughie for us. Yeah. But I do think that's just like a piece of it. Well, go ahead.

Speaker: No, no, you're good. I was going to move on to another piece of the confessional. I was just going to say, oh, well, I was going to say like broadly, i feel like he does have kind of, he just has like this insecurity with Father Wesley. Yeah.

Speaker: Maybe, i don't know. We can come back to that. You say what you're going about the confessional. I was just going to say, i i thought it was, you know again a very sean confessional so we mentioned he talked about a lot i lie all the time and then he like you said jumps to something else jumps to something else jumps to something else and then he comes back to stealing he's like gus can you hear me

Speaker: i steal food out of gus's drawer and um i blame it on the cleaning lady And Gus is like, I knew it! Where do you think Gus is? Do you think he has, like, his ear to the confessional? Because can you really hear everything?

Speaker: i I bet. That's not good. bet he's like, okay, just got to just checking on him. He's got, like, a glass. Yeah, of course he does. Well, I mean, he's got the super sniffer. Does he have just, like, really good hearing, too? I could also see that.

Speaker: Yeah. Who knows? yeah i thought that was so funny yeah they're cleaning the lady's name is onelia like hilarious and um yeah i i just thought i thought that whole thing was really funny um curse cursing is that a bad one priest's like yep yeah that's all there greed impure thoughts all of it it's all there And again, i don't know Catholicism very well, but it is also interesting. i was talking about like gray areas and stuff. The idea that like you can do all these these bad things and then you go tell the priest and you're absolved of those things. Yes. And it's like, well, how does that make it better?

Speaker: Like in our real world, you know, like. Yeah. I wonder if it's like a okay, try try not to do those anymore. kind of a yeah probably i guess and well i guess in general we're all trying not to do them right we all make mistakes thank you for admitting it try not to do it anymore maybe i would hope that people weren't using this as like ah i'm gonna go do whatever bad thing i want right free um i say but i'm sure there are those kinds of people yeah yeah

Speaker: We got to the title sequence, I believe, is where we got. Oh, yeah. Should we go back a little bit? Yeah, sure. Talk about the the death? Okay, yes. I actually thought this was very interesting because, again, we see the death.

Speaker: Yeah. Which is not super common. I was thinking that, Yeah. I think we talked about it with one other instance. Well, I was... on I was thinking that too. I was like thinking, you know, we talk about the perspective of the show and stuff, but then I was thinking it does feel very similar to Scary Sherry, which I think as we were coming out of last episode, you mentioned we would probably end up calling back to Scary Sherry. And I do, yeah we see it in Scary Sherry too.

Speaker: Like almost the exact same situation. Yes. jumping Jumping from the. Yeah. i Yes. Yeah, in this scenario, yeah, she does run and jump. But, like, her friend is chasing her.

Speaker: Which is really interesting. Again, like, Sean is right. It's just that... wrecked She was driven to... Right....this intense depression... Correct....by someone else.

Speaker: Yeah, what what could we... What could we call this? Like murder in the second degree or murder in the third? Because like she didn't kill her outright, but she did things that made the murder possible.

Speaker: And if all, you you know, if the story is true, she just wanted to make her a little, quote, crazy so that her boyfriend would dump her. Right.

Speaker: There's no intent either. so yeah, it probably would be like, i don't know, manslaughter. Oh, manslaughter. Yes. I think you're right. Manslaughter.

Speaker: Yeah. So I thought, I thought that was very interesting that we saw it and I don't know if maybe that's just for like clarity sake, almost for the episode. I do think it would have been kind of confusing maybe if we hadn't seen link She jumped, someone was there. Now we think she, you know what i mean? It's also just like chilling to watch. Oh, totally. I like to sort of set us up.

Speaker: Yeah. too I'm like, is that what actually happened? Like, what are we watching? That's a great question. Because there was no possession.

Speaker: Right. but that last thing where she like looks at her friend and her friend is like, like, yeah, it does feel like, I don't think that would really happen.

Speaker: Yeah. I mean, without supernatural elements. at play Yeah. And so i am like, it's like, we're, we're being sort of,

Speaker: manipulated, I guess. Being shown a particular story. As an audience. We're like, yeah, we're being presented like a... And it's also interesting because like if it's if it's like that, it's not...

Speaker: It's filmed and colored and and everything as if it's real. Right, yeah. We're given no indication that we're not watching the real events. well So I don't know.

Speaker: Does that then call into question the flashbacks? And how real and accurate the flashbacks are. Well, I think we have talked about that. Like, we we definitely talked about the perspective of the flashbacks. And, like, for the most part, they are... Well, I don't...

Speaker: It does seem like there's like an omniscient, I think that's kind of where we landed. Yes. That there's like an omniscient narrator. Yeah. Well, because if it was coming from, if it was coming from a perspective, I would expect more bias in said perspective. Like if it was coming from Sean, I would expect Henry to be like a meanie butt. And he's really pretty neutral most of the time. Yeah. We're just seeing events. Right. Yeah.

Speaker: events right And there are moments where we do see flashbacks from Sean's perspective. Right. Like when he's on his motorbike in the spelling bee one and they cut from him and his frowny face.

Speaker: um And it's like, it's very clear. It's like we're in his mind. Right. um And then sometimes we see his mind. Yeah. We see his mind like working.

Speaker: Yep. um But I think in general, It is more, it's it's nobody's, no character's perspective, I think. but um So could we say that this is ah this has a similar similar omnipotence almost, but maybe because it's kind of homage-y, we give it a little bit of like a spooky kind of twist?

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah, maybe it's just there are no rules anymore. Well, we've had Tuesday the Yep. I mean, that's a good comp too, because it's like in that one, they're doing a movie.

Speaker: Yeah. They're doing a play essentially. Yeah. Yeah. And it does feel different. Yes. um Like the way it's. Oh, I see what you're saying. They're doing the movie Friday the 13th. Yeah. And like the tone feels different, you know?

Speaker: Yes. um And that's sort of what we have here. but i' Yeah. I also don't know. don't know. I was going to say, like, i Lucy, it's almost like we're watching, like, revisionist history. it's like a It's like she's, she does seem, even though it wasn't her intention to kill her friend.

Speaker: Yeah. She does seem to be disturbed. Yeah. yeah She makes choices that suggest she shows no remorse for what happened. Yeah. I mean, this is definitely a very traumatizing event, whether she instigated it or not. so That's true. I wonder, I mean, I definitely don't think she's in, like, quote unquote, her right mind, if you know what I mean. um She's probably making decisions that...

Speaker: make sense to her but don't make sense to like a rational person like she's probably thinking things along the lines of like I didn't actually kill her but someone might think I did and I can't that can't happen to me so how would I like prevent people from thinking that or maybe she was possessed like maybe I just you know who knows right right well and that's yeah I guess it's like does the event does her friend's death cause that that like i would say mental breakdown or does yeah it happen before i would say the well it if it didn't seem so calculated i could understand or i could maybe see it starting before but the fact that at least in the the nut shelling it seems like

Speaker: Lucy was making decisions as they were being said to her, essentially. like Yeah. Well, yeah, we have that moment where we see her see and hear Father Wesley say possession. Right. Or like we hear, we see Sean go, she's not speaking any languages. She doesn't know. And she starts speaking German, you know, like almost immediately after things like that.

Speaker: Yeah. Like that feels very... well and it does, yeah, because, like, that initial thing feels very, like, fight or flight. Like, I can see her being, like, my God, i i did this. I have to do right something else. like um Like, she sees kind of a an opportunity when says possession. Right.

Speaker: And she takes it. But then it's later when she's, like, with the boyfriend that I'm, like, what? but she The fact that she'd still be like trying to get in with him and like the way when they confront her, she's like... What?

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. She's like, she's she's still scary then. Yeah. Well, I, i yeah, again, I don't necessarily think she's like a you know, a normal girl that just, like, got a bad rap. Like, she thought it was okay to drug her best friend and drive her to insanity to get this guy. So there's definitely something a little questionable about her psyche, I think, in general. um Yeah. So, yeah, maybe maybe, like, this whole thing, maybe, like, she

Speaker: who know Maybe she actually, yeah, maybe she even believed that she was actually possessed. Like, maybe she really just goes into psychosis. I mean, we have no idea. Yeah. And, like, well, that's why it's, like, almost as if that what we're watching m is, the like, me i could almost buy that it's, like, what she decides happened after she heard him say possession.

Speaker: Ah. Yeah. Yes, it is. Yeah. You said revisionist. It's like her retelling of what actually happened. Yeah. Or even like in her mind, maybe that becomes reality. But I don't know. Like, I don't know how it's like almost as if part of her is aware and part of her is maybe not.

Speaker: Yeah. I could. I mean, could be. Yeah. I mean, yeah, we never get like.

Speaker: answers very similar bold to you yeah that's true in the exodus we don't know I do think you know we talk a lot about like how psych does not believe in anything correct and I do think that holds true here but it's almost like we're seeing just enough of another person's perspective that like h you could almost yeah I think

Speaker: I think my takeaway from this would be if I were to have to analyze, like, does this prove psych believes or doesn't believe in supernatural beings? I'd say it still holds true to the fact that they don't.

Speaker: But that doesn't mean that Lucy doesn't, if you know what I mean. Like, I think it does more about like her mental state than it does the actual presence of. demon or possession or whatever. Like, the exorcist, very clearly in that world, demons are a thing.

Speaker: Like, very clearly. Here, I think, because of Sean's ability to explain everything that she said and did, it says, like, you know, this was a hoax in reality.

Speaker: And that's just, like, one little... theory of like what we're looking at but it's really not even presented ah as if it's her perspective except for the fact that like they're the only two there oh the beginning yeah yes so it but it's like if it's omniscient and she did look at her like that yeah i don't know what to to make of it I mean I guess I don't know in some crime shows where they do dabble with these kinds of things like I feel like there are sort of explanations like that bodies can like have like a twitch or something yeah so maybe it's something like that that we're seeing I don't know but it's kind of interesting and and they're never going to answer it because nobody else was there right nobody can kind of disprove it or not right

Speaker: Yeah. I don't know. I mean, honestly, i could i could buy either way. no Like, if they gave us more explanation, I would have been like, oh, yeah, okay. um One way or another.

Speaker: but i don't know. I think, yeah, I don't i'm mean as I'm going to say no. I think the only time we really get an instance where it's like, what the heck?

Speaker: Like, r Is this stuff real? is that one fortune teller in, is it the last, see the last season? Oh, pretending to be Russian or something. Yeah.

Speaker: What the heck? like You're like, yeah, that's the only time I really think. Cause she like reads Sean's mind, apparently like verbatim.

Speaker: All right. So we, we got pretty much like to the, We talked about the the death scene, if you will. Yes. Talked about the flashback. Talked about the finding of, not the finding of the body, but the observation of the body from the boys and the and the police. Um...

Speaker: We find out in this scene that three weeks prior to this death, Agatha, our friend who you know jumped from the tall place, um changed her like disposition.

Speaker: She apparently wasn't taking drugs. She apparently didn't drink alcohol. So all of this seemed kind of odd to people. um I love that. Again, Sean's response is, does she play Grand Theft Auto when I play? I start filming at the mouth.

Speaker: Gus says, I had a taser in once. fair enough you say like i still think that was an overreaction or something yeah yeah yeah i have such a hard time when watching this because the stuff they say i'm like i want to write it down i want to write all the word for word but it's so hard because i literally in 45 minute show turns into like three hours and i also feel like on like on here it's like people really want to listen to us just recite all the lines from the film. It's so funny. It is so funny.

Speaker: i I was just, i just had a thought yes um about the yeah the death again. And that I'm sort of catching myself talking about it, knowing what happened.

Speaker: And I wonder too, if like part of why we see it is because right after that, Sean says it's suicide. And for all intents and purposes, it is. Like what we just watched, that's what happened.

Speaker: Yeah. yes So we have no reason to question Sean, especially as our guide through this world. Yes.

Speaker: At this point. Right. We even just watched it and that's what happened. So that's interesting too, not thinking about what we find out later. like Right.

Speaker: We're shown a woman jumping to her death and then Sean says, it's suicide. This is not a case. right And then Wesley says it's possession. And like, so yeah, it this is like an interesting one to step out of and like try to forget the rest. Yes.

Speaker: Do, so that, I mean, that bears the question. Do we think, like if Sean and Gus had never gone, Do we think Father Wesley right then and there would have been like, it's possession? And if he hadn't said it, Lucy wouldn't have heard it? Would Lucy have ever pretended to be possessed? because i think i think Wesley still would have said it because he thought it before she even committed suicide.

Speaker: Oh, because of her change in behavior. Yeah, he thought of it before, yeah. and he had I think it sounded like he tried to intervene in the other...

Speaker: priests are like no don't do it ah and then another funny thing is that lassie says thinks it's murder right that's yes and so sean keeps being like like that's another reason he doesn't want it to or he won't what i and Yeah, it's so funny that at the end, like Sean is being so intentionally against Lassie. And in this instance, he's he's wrong. But then at the end, he asks Lassie who does he think did it?

Speaker: And Sean picks the opposite person. And then Sean's right. But it's funny, too, because like when they they really walk a very ah delicate line here because really, Sean is never wrong.

Speaker: Hmm. And I mean... I see. I see. Because she wasn't physically pushed. She was technically not murdered. But at the same time, there was someone who had a hand in killing her. So at the end, when he accuses someone, he's still also right.

Speaker: Yeah. Like... yeah Like, I don't think anybody's really wrong, kind of. And and it's kind of semantics. like It is kind of semantics. What is murder? But it's like, it's a perfect case for all the different perspectives they're giving us because... And like, and the kind of infighting that we see with Sean and Gus and Lassie thrown in there sometimes because they're they're all kind of right.

Speaker: Yeah. well And I think too... Okay. As we were kind of referencing before, there are like varying degrees of murder. There's like... From a legal standpoint. From a legal standpoint, yes. Thank you for the clarification. Yes, from a legal standpoint, there are varying degrees of murder usually having to do with the various amount of like ownership over how someone was killed. And usually in Shows like this, particularly in Psych, we're talking about like someone intentionally going and killing somebody else if there was a murder that happened. right like Yang is going and intentionally kills whomever it might be. right Even though Yang doesn't kill anybody. But anyway, you know you understand my my what I'm getting at here.

Speaker: So this is A little bit more for the world, a little bit more nuanced because it's not someone going, hi-yah, stab, but it is still someone who is culpable in the death of this person, which in in the real world would write have one of those other terms. Maybe it's manslaughter, maybe it's murder or in the third degree, whatever, whichever one it is, right?

Speaker: But... Here, that seems maybe a little bit too complex for the silly viewership of the show. So you're right. Because it's more nuanced, it's like everybody's right, but everyone's also kind of wrong.

Speaker: the same thing. Yeah. Well, ah it allows us to, like, I don't know. Because I do feel like in watching this show, like, Sean can never...

Speaker: be wrong, like be completely wrong. Like I feel like even when he's wrong, there's like, there's something there. Like he does accuse the wrong person, but he's not wrong like this, you know, where he's like, like misreading the whole.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. Like wouldn't even investigate this when clearly there's foul play. Right. Well, I think what you said in the beginning is part of the reason for that. Like he throws all semblance of like detail or like attention to detail or like investigating the case as he usually would. kind of out the window so now the touch points that he usually uses to make his determination of things he's not utilizing do you know what i mean like so when we're you know doing the the fake psychic case and they walk into the home depot and he's like oh he had a scar above his eyebrow or whatever then when he sees someone with a scar above his eyebrow theoretically he could be like okay

Speaker: Maybe it's not you, but scar above your eye eyebrow. Like, that's partly, right, partly true. But here, because there's no evidence, there's nothing for him to, like, grasp on to, maybe of his own doing, that's a lot harder. So he's much farther off base than we usually see him.

Speaker: Yeah. Well, I think the observations he does make support his theory of it being suicide Because he talks about like the breakup that she had and stuff. Like it all it all adds up to him.

Speaker: um in a very surface level way though. Like he's not usually so like, oh, this is obviously the answer. Yes. And I do think part of it is just that he is unwilling to entertain what Wesley and Gus,

Speaker: yeah what they think. Because he doesn't, eight I mean, we we see him in other situations sort of kind of go into this, like, child version of himself. And I feel like we're kind of seeing that um a little bit here, too. And this is a similar... I mean, we were talking about it with High Noonish, too, like, seeing Lassie kind of be a different, more childlike version of himself around...

Speaker: um a father figure and like just like an important figure from his childhood. And Father Wesley is an important figure from Sean's childhood, although he doesn't have positive feelings about him. Yeah. Well, yeah. Important doesn't have to necessarily mean positive, I suppose, in in this context. Like yeah Father Wesley still had an impact on him in in some way.

Speaker: Yes. And it's interesting that like in the flashback,

Speaker: Sean is the skeptic and that is the tension that they have. And then in the present, he is like unwilling to be the skeptic because... Or he is the he's the skeptic of the murder.

Speaker: Yeah, it's like it's like both. Yeah. kind of bringing us back to like father caris you know in the exorcist being the skeptic he's skeptical about both sides like he's skeptical about it being i wonder what is the definition of skeptical is it only does it only work for like a quote irrational thing

Speaker: i wouldn't no i don't think yeah I feel like that's when it's most often used. um Okay. Skepticism.

Speaker: An attitude of doubt or a disposition to incredulity, either in general or toward a particular object. just like that doubt knowledge went on Yeah. So father caris is doubtful both about psychiatry and about religion.

Speaker: Both of his belief systems are cast into doubt. And in this case, like Sean, okay he's like being skeptical about in one direction, but not the other.

Speaker: Like he is also not entertaining that see what he's seeing could be more than meets the eye. Right. Which usually I feel like he is willing to entertain that something more could be going on. Right. Something could be amiss.

Speaker: But it's because Gus and Father Wesley think that he won't. And because Lassie thinks that he won't. Oh, ah certainly. Yeah. hm yeah that's that is that's very interesting

Speaker: I do feel like that kind of comes down to like Sean's or it sort of reveals some of his limitations because he's so he is very stubborn self-centered yes and in this situation it does kind of

Speaker: It doesn't serve him. No. Yeah. It prolongs the the finding out of what's actually happening. So, yeah. It's interesting. I don't think we've ever seen him do this.

Speaker: Ever seen him in quite this situation. Yeah. And I don't think you could achieve that. In another setting. In the case that was more obvious, more cut and dry. Because this is a very, like, goes in a lot of directions. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, and I do think the, as you mentioned, the fact that there's kind of additional players in this, like Father Wesley being there, I think is definitely a big motivator to the change in behavior.

Speaker: Yeah. Let's keep going. We are like. okay

Speaker: Yeah, we're expounding on. Moving at a glacial pace. So then we we get theme song. Yay. So exciting. After Father Wesley says she's possessed. And we jump back to the same instance afterwards and we get our first exorcist reference. Lassie goes, as in floating head above, as in floating above the bed, head spinning, puking up on the wall.

Speaker: I'm like, i got that. Hey. And that's fun too because we know, obviously, the movie. I mean, they are they talk about the movie. Yeah. Very, like, we're not pretending that the movie isn't. Oh, yeah, no.

Speaker: Part of this. Yes. They have seen the movie. They love the movie. Everybody has. Yeah. Lucy's seen the movie. Yes. Everybody's seen the movie. Yeah. and ah and but And Father Wesley, too, like, he even references it. He's like, it's not like what they talk about, what they show in the movie. That's the Hollywood version, which is such a, like, classic...

Speaker: I mean, anybody who would who works with anything in real life would be like, oh, it's not like it is on TV. right Right, exactly. So that's kind of fun. Yeah, and it kind of, it it makes it feel like there's more credence right to Father Wesley by saying, like, that's a you know fantastical version of it. Not that what they do is not just as much. Like, i mean, they go in there, he literally is throwing holy water on her like they in the movie, you know. Yeah, well, what he's, I feel like he's talking more about, like,

Speaker: how she behaves in the movie. Oh, okay, okay. An exaggerated version. That, well, yeah. Oh, God, I still can't. like woo the Yeah.

Speaker: And there's just there's a lot of good like little little beats in here. um Sean being like, if we end up catching the devil, like latinia let's just talk about that.

Speaker: That's so funny. um Yeah, yeah. he makes a devil went down to georgia multiple he makes that reference multiple times because he talks about he talks about how they're go to challenge the devil to a fiddling duel or whatever yeah um and then he also says yeah yes um that he he says at some point that it's Something's more likely than the devil going down to Santa Barbara.

Speaker: Yeah, yeah. that's Yes, I wrote that one down too. Yeah. yeah And then I love they um they go and they I guess want to get like some more information about this. Right. So they're like at walking around like the school. And this is when Sean's like, you know, Gus, I don't really know if I can support you on this because Sean's not about it. Gus is about it. And yeah, I guess we didn't really say that Gus declares that they're on this case.

Speaker: They are on it. And he, and not only that, but he is lead investigator. Yes. He says, know. we have that already? We're right there. I know that's why I want to be lead investigator. And Sean goes, since when do we have titles? And Gus goes, since ordered business cards? It said, Sean Spencer, head investigator or lead investigator.

Speaker: Hello? No, silly it's lead investigator. Lead. It's a business I was thinking of starting after we watched Erin Brockovich, which I get that reference, which I was like, I'm probably myself.

Speaker: love that. Even though I think he's lying. i do love that. The idea that Sean would be that passionate about led and helping other wrongs like that although we have seen him i'm just remembering in the wedding episode from season one is it oh lyme disease he's pretending to be a lyme inspector yes which feels similar does it does we then see father wesley in his office and i just wrote down he has great teeth

Speaker: His teeth are like so white and like yeah so straight. i'm like, wow. He's very, he has a lovely presence on screen. And we didn't mention he is one of our first Twin Peaks friend. Yes, he is.

Speaker: And he'll, he'll come back a couple of times, which is actually, is very fun. Yeah. I love that. Yeah. He has a very, um I'm to say strangely calming presence.

Speaker: Like, he is very like his voice is kind of like sing-songy he's very chill does make a good smile you know yeah he's very very relaxing And yeah, he they start asking the boys, or the boys start asking him like, what's been going on kind of lately? Anything like out of the ordinary or anything that would, you know, make demonic possession? Yeah, and Gus is trying to conduct the interview. Of course, he's led. Yeah.

Speaker: And Father Wesley says, you know, oh yeah, the occult, some seances, some Ouija boards she was known to, you know, participate participate in. We mentioned the personality changes. And then of course, Sean has to pretend to be possessed, as Kylie mentioned before. They're going to die up there.

Speaker: Very creepy. Very creepy moment in the movie, too. And i was I kind of wanted to hear what happened to that guy. Yeah. we didn't No, we didn't.

Speaker: lot of unanswered questions in that movie. Yeah, I wonder what the if the second one would... follow through on some of these or if it would be like a totally different storyline i don't know because it it did kind of end in a kind of a cliffhanger because the you know demon seemingly Pazuzu excuse me seemingly you know got away yeah we don't know what really happened yeah I wonder I mean what is an exorcism Are you asking that legitimately? Yeah. It gets the demon out of you, but the demon, it doesn't like kill the demon, does it? It just gets it out of you. don't think

Speaker: I think it just expels it from your body because if it stops the possession. Yeah. Another thing, where do you think the demon went? Because, i mean, I don't think it went into the other priest's But that's sort of like, especially in the psych paradigm, fake paradigm that we're given. Imaginary. On multiple levels.

Speaker: Father Karras sacrifices himself. To rid Reagan of the demon, which I was not expecting at all. I know. um Spoilers for the movie.

Speaker: I feel like that's pretty good. It's been like, it's been 50 years, right? Yeah. and Yeah. yeah That's crazy. Since 1973.

Speaker: And it wasn't spoiled for us. And it wasn't. And I did not know. I did not see that coming at all. Yeah. So that's fun. But um he dies in his friend's arms.

Speaker: Just like yeah yeah Agatha. And so where does the demon go? I don't know. Does that rid you of a demon? i Yeah.

Speaker: That's a great question. yeah And it almost seems like the demon is gone. In already in that moment because he does like his last rites. Right. Right.

Speaker: Yeah. i I think I would be more inclined to believe that the demon had left him by that point. Yeah. Maybe. I mean, maybe the demon would leave because he's no longer useful. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, I would think so. Lots of questions. Yes, indeed. Which, I don't know, I feel like, is that not a good movie if if we're not talking about it, you know?

Speaker: Yeah, i no, great. questions yeah Love it. So... this This whole lead investigator, like, who's going to be the the lead, feel like comes up so much, so much in this episode. Even just in this sitting in the office, Sean starts, you know, being Sean and Gus is like, backseat. Like, I'm trying, you know.

Speaker: um Father Wesley, of course, tells him that, you know, possessions are real and... And all this. and And Gus is trying to be he's trying to be the head investigator. He's trying to be the person like asking the questions, getting the information, doing the research. So they're back at the psych office and Gus is doing research on Father Wesley to see like information about exorcists and exorcisms and how, you know, I guess standard that is. Father Wesley turns out to be like a very accomplished exorcist, apparently. Yeah.

Speaker: He is the exorcist. He is, yeah. That's sort of the, how he's presented. Yeah, definitely. Because in the movie, we didn't talk too much about it, but that guy is like famous for right Like he's one of the only ones left who will do this. And the last one took years and almost killed him or something. Yeah. Yeah. Can you imagine?

Speaker: You can't do in that every day for a year. Oh my God. No, no one. I mean, was killed him correct. I mean, we saw them do it for all of like three minutes and that was a lot. i know know Yeah.

Speaker: It must've been super, yeah. Super taxing. Yeah, he's an expert on demon demonic possession. Gus, doing some real great detective work, manages to sign himself onto Agatha's page and is...

Speaker: reading up on her post that she was making up until her death. We see the pineapple, which i was like, oh, I noticed that. I'm proud of myself. And um we see some changes in her demeanor, even in the postings. And at this point, Sean is still really just anti pretty much anything Gus um has to say.

Speaker: You know, he's saying that it's his her demeanor change was boy troubles. Like, look, she's all happy, cheek to cheek with her friends. And then all of a sudden, like, oh, Agatha's annoyed with her boyfriend. Oh, Agatha's single, right? Two days before. Which is so funny. I always wonder in bits like this, do people really post like that? Did people ever post like that? i feel like people used to. i feel like it used to be. Yeah, because do remember there were, like, statuses on things? For sure.

Speaker: And I feel like people did actively change my boyfriend. What? I mean, some people share way too much. I guess i guess you're right. People still do. I'm just like in awe of it.

Speaker: I know. I could never. Um, even just teaching, i sometimes I'm like, you know guys know too much about me. Like, yeah stop that. Yeah.

Speaker: Oh, and also the passwords. That always gets me too. Like, who's using their birthday as their password? I I know. Or who who was actually using password as a password? Like, come on. Yeah, right? They say that's the most, they always say that in shows like this, but that's the most common. I'm like, really? Was it ever really the most common? Yeah.

Speaker: I would hope not. I would really, really hope not. Yeah. But I i guess, don't probably the average Joe, it's not as that internet savvy. So maybe they were, i don't know. Maybe.

Speaker: Well, and again, especially in 2008, like yeah social like MySpace, Facebook, like they're all still kind of new. And maybe there weren't all the like, i feel like now everyone's pretty good about their password because there's been a lot of breaches to like passwords and information. There's a lot more rules.

Speaker: Yes, very true. So I wonder if maybe people were just far more lax back then in general because all that stuff wasn't there yet. um I love the cheek to cheek photo in the office.

Speaker: I'm obsessed with it. Yeah. Sean's like, why do girls always post pictures she like that? think Gus is like, since the guy who has that on his desk, he's like, it's not posted online yet. yeah And it's a cute, like it's very them, like, like they're making kind of silly faces. So cute. You know,

Speaker: I don't know. Obviously, we see them bicker a lot, but, like, oh yeah it's really sweet to see them, like, really having fun together. Yeah. there wass like They're like brothers. You know what I mean? Like, like people bicker with their siblings. Like, that doesn't you don't love them, you know? But that's kind of a tough dynamic to explain to someone who maybe doesn't have, like, that kind relationship with someone. so Well, and I love in this episode, too, later, like, when...

Speaker: we'll get to it i kind of forget what the moment is but there's this moment where they just kind of like after all this you know fighting they've been doing all episode they just kind of get back on the same side and it's just like such an adorable little beat yes um yeah i'm not gonna look we'll get to it

Speaker: And, oh, yeah. so So with Sean finding all of this and, of course, believing that he's right, Sean takes back his lead investigator title. ah And he says that, you know, history will not look fondly on your time as lead investigator, which I also thought was very silly. Yeah.

Speaker: Oh, oh, and that is especially because they go to Cameron's, they go to the boyfriends because they just found that, you know, she broke up again. And Lassie and Jules beat them there. And Sean's like, beaten by Lassie?

Speaker: Yeah, not a good look. Yeah, not a good look. um I thought it was interesting how they shoot that scene. Like, they have this really harsh angle. oh yes, I wrote that down too. thought that it's so interesting, yes.

Speaker: And I was trying to think, like, did we see those The Exorcist? And I couldn't recall. But it was definitely pretty jarring. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, I don't know if they did that in Exorcist, but it does it does just, like, add to the creepy vibe. Yes. And the, yeah, the skeptic maybe our skeptic dickle say skepticalness or skepticism. Mm-hmm.

Speaker: question mark language and grammar um towards cameron like it it kind of puts him in a weird you know yeah and he does have kind of a creepy energy too both are sort of like these vacant weird yeah vacant is a great word for that yeah yeah they have really very little affect yeah which is a little unnerving yeah So Jules and Lassie are asking him, rightfully so, again, with the creepiness in mind, where was he when all of this happened? And, you know, why did they break up and all of these things? And he said, you know, he was at Burning Man when it happened and she wanted to break up with him and, you know, whatever, whatever. And Sean clocks Cameron's boots in the corner that they have sand on them. And he's like, OK, yeah, that means that he must be at Burning Man. He's not the guy. Let's move on.

Speaker: And as they go into the hallway, a girl comes up to them and is like, oh, were you talking to Cam? And he's like, oh, hi, Mary. That's so funny. Because what else would her name be? And Mary directs them to.

Speaker: and Mary assumes that they have the grief counselors. Oh, yes. Which also is hysterical. The grief counselor scene after this. Oh, my God. I can't wait to talk about that. love it.

Speaker: Yeah, thank goodness for Mary giving them perfect cover. Yeah, for real. So Mary ah pretty much directs them to Lucy and says, you know, she's she saw it happen, the blonde girl that we saw at the very beginning.

Speaker: And, you know, maybe it would be good for them to talk to her. So they decide to go to Lucy's house. And they introduce themselves as Sean and Sean, no relation, the grief counselors from the school.

Speaker: And they find out that there were detectives there earlier. Again, Lassie and Jules beat them there. And the mom references Lucy as a shell of her former self, which I feel like something along those lines was referenced in The Exorcist.

Speaker: Mm-hmm. So they go into the house. They go up to Lucy's room. And she is doing the creepiest backbend I've ever seen in my entire life. Yeah. This is They do a great job, like, making this exactly like The Exorcist from the house, like, the rooms, the stairs. Yes. And then she does...

Speaker: As much as we talked about the character, the actress does a great job. Yes. um Really sells it. Yes. It's like an intense performance.

Speaker: Yeah. Physically. Yeah. A lot of thrashing. Yeah. It's very hard. She sells it. And then it's interesting from a character perspective that this character is selling it like that.

Speaker: Ah, Yes. Yeah, that's great point, too. And she's not really possessed. Right. So, like, that's pretty bold. Very. Oh, my gosh. Yeah. Well, and i yeah, I'm just thinking to myself, like, what was she thinking? Like, you go, how can I make myself as creepy as possible? Okay, now I can do a backbend.

Speaker: wonder if i like she went home and watched the movie. may I mean, it could be. Yeah, because it is yeah it is very similar to the movie in the respect of the thrashing and and the the even the voice that she starts doing. Like she starts talking in a very like raspy i love and guttural voice. make sense that she would be like, okay, I'll be possessed then.

Speaker: And then like she'll need to study kind of what that is. Yes. Yeah, she'll need to do some research. And I mean, the Exorcist, the movie, is probably the most readily available thing at the time. Mm-hmm. Does that make sense?

Speaker: um We get a great shot of the boy standing in the door at this, like, catty corner angle looking. Pretty shocked. We eventually get it. Do we get in in these title cards or is it next season?

Speaker: don't know. I can't remember. But we do get them in eventually in the title cards. And ah it's great. We see her, yeah, making like grunting, growling kind of noises.

Speaker: Her voice gets all gravelly. The boys end up saying that the demon jumped from Agatha to Lucy, just like in The Exorcist. And the boys have a little back and forth about how you can't use a movie to solve a crime. And Gus is like, we do it all the time. Like you use pretty and pink. And he goes, well, pretty and pretty. pretty but there's the pretty and pink it's more of a docudrama which i thought was actually so funny yeah because really funny like kind of but it's also like sean being like well the thing i like is obviously it was obviously far superior very real right of course um and then we get more of the like

Speaker: We say something that Lucy hears and then Lucy acts on that thing where, um, Sean says, how come she is in projectile vomiting and spouting stuff in languages? She doesn't know. And then she immediately starts speaking German, which did you think did she say anything interesting in German or was it just like something random?

Speaker: I don't know. It was, you recall, it was fast. I didn't. No, no, no. That's fair. Um, Yeah, I just, I thought that was so funny, too, that she's just like, oh, got it. You need me to speak a language. don't know.

Speaker: Language, I don't know. um And then the boys, you know, the boys get out of the room. And another one of my favorite lines from this, they're like, okay, definitely something weird going on. And Sean asks, you know, the mom if she can do something.

Speaker: backbends or if she knows these movies or whatever. A gymnast. A gymnast. Yeah. I don't even remember what the mom said, but Sean just goes, boom, in your facha. So silly. And Sean proclaims that he is, oh, no, no, no.

Speaker: who silly and john proclaims that he is oh no no Gus tries to take back over as lead investigator. And Sean's like, sorry, buddy, only one title switch per case. Refined print on the back of my business cards.

Speaker: And Gus is pretty much like, that's ridiculous and and gives him a little punch. Sean's like, are we really going to do this right now? He's like, yeah. All right, here we go. Come on, let's go. And then they do the a punch battle. boom boom po boom bu boom but I think one of the most classic bits of So good.

Speaker: good. And then the mom, mom gets over. He's like, one or what like what is happening? What kind of grief counselors are you? Yeah. And Sean's lying for this. I was like, honest to God, so smart. ah We're very progressive. This is an exercise that we do. It helps us sympathize with your daughter's pain.

Speaker: It is very smart. I was like, how quick are you? I would have been like, okay. i pick up Yeah. He is. He's sharp. Right. Yeah.

Speaker: So now Sean's pissed at Gus because Gus is going to take over as the lead. Sean doesn't, you know, agree or believe with what Gus. Yeah. And I have, I have a note here and I don't remember when exactly he said it, but Sean says something about like Wesley not liking him because he can see things in more than one way.

Speaker: um oh I don't know. I don't have that sound.

Speaker: Because I was kind of trying to track like his insecurity about Wesley, but it's interesting that he phrases it like that because that's what we were just talking about. Like how he, in this situation, he refuses to see it in more than one way.

Speaker: But that's like, yes. that is kind of his damage with father Wesley and what we're talking about with the flashback and everything. Like, um, so it's interesting that he's, um, being so, so staunch in his theory in this case, because father Wesley is right there. Yeah.

Speaker: Silly man. Very, very interesting. Yes. Very layers. Yes. And then we have this very interesting, like, B plot, C plot, I don't even know what you would call it, at Henry's house. Yes.

Speaker: Where... You know, of course, Sean goes to Henry for some advice. um In this case, he's also going because he's looking for his Xbox, which apparently um he thinks Henry stole. But Henry says he didn't steal. He repossessed because Sean did not finish a task that he asked him to do, which is painting his house.

Speaker: And Sean says something ridiculous, like crazy. Yeah. yeah Oh, yeah. to i mean, it's Henry. Henry's like, making him do weird things. Yeah. Your adult son. Of course. And Sean also, like, doing it the way that he wants to because he sees point in doing it any other way. Yeah, he did minus the spots behind the bushes that no one ever sees and the back and something else.

Speaker: And the windows. Yeah. Like a bunch of pieces. But it is funny like that they're in this like weird stunted thing where Henry is still making him do chores basically. And yeah and Sean is doing them.

Speaker: And not well. yeah and And they end up talking about their relationship troubles that Sean is currently in. um And I do think, I did think it was really sweet that Sean was like, i hate it when we fight. I know. So cute.

Speaker: Yes. And, um you know, Henry's like, I bet you feels the same way. And Sean's like, mean Gus. And he's like, yeah, me too. And um they end up talking about you know, what do you do when we, as we said before, what do you do when you don't really believe what you're, you know, the road that your partner's going down. And Henry talks about his ex-partner, Stevie, and how he trusted Stevie's gut and, you know, followed him and in this case. And from that point on, Stevie always supported his ideas. And therefore, Sean needs to trust Gus and go along with Gus in this case. So Sean decides to go back to the house and,

Speaker: and support Gus. Yeah. This is where we go. It is funny though that he would even need this advice because or or just the idea that like then Gus will follow like what you want to do and it's like Gus that's has to roll with him all the time. All his group shenanigans. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, that's true. Yeah. Maybe it's just like, that's the only way we're going to convince Sean that he needs to do what this wants. It is nice that, i mean, I guess, yeah, it still reframes it for him that like, yeah this is a two-way street. yeah Right. Correct. Correct.

Speaker: And then, excuse me, we go back to the house, to the the Lucy's house, and we get all of the exorcist goodness starting. Yes. Exorcist music with a wonderful night shot with the fog and the silhouetting.

Speaker: So good. good. Father Wesley, of course, is the man silhouetted. Yeah, because Sean walks in like, I'm going to be there for you, buddy. And Gus is like, actually, i already called somebody. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. You called him the exorcist. Of course. And, uh,

Speaker: this beginning father wesley comes in you know he's getting ready getting his cassock on and everything also very similar to what we see we very i mean the move even down to the like the kissing of the crosses like yeah very very similar um except before they go into the room father wesley's like bringing in everyone and put their hands in and uh And he's like, i just kidding. Like, I just like to make a couple jokes before we get there, you know, break the tension. I'm like, Father Wesley. And then Sean tries to crack a joke. And Father Wesley's like, it's over now.

Speaker: So serious. So funny.

Speaker: I was surprised how quickly we got to the exorcism. Maybe because yeah like just having watched the movie where it doesn't happen until like the last 20 minutes. Yes. Yes. Right. And they exhausted like every other avenue in the movie. Yeah. Like we just immediately went to exorcism. Yeah.

Speaker: yeah Well, and I guess with Gus as lead investigator, that makes sense because he is on board. That's true. I do think I skipped one thing and I don't really know where it it falls in here. um But I had at the bottom another kind of meta note. Yeah.

Speaker: you know, like the boys are together again. Like, what are they going to do? Well, they're going follow a few leads, make a few jokes. I'll remember some stuff and they'll tip off the police using a little bit of this. Yeah.

Speaker: a Sean's talking about like, I guess their process in some way, which is, yeah I don't remember where that was either. Right. Isn't there somewhere?

Speaker: Anyway, the exorcism. Oh, maybe I do have a, After the Exorcist song, I have a note that's like, my way, you got it. Oh, okay. That was the moment where they get on the same side again, I think. That was cute. Oh, okay. Because, like, they have this moment where Sean comes back.

Speaker: Yep. And is like, okay, when this doesn't work, or if this doesn't work. Yes. Then we're going to do this my way. Yes. And then he kind of goes through that. And Gus is like, you got it. Yeah, yeah. And it's such cute little...

Speaker: i don't know. Like, i love that Gus isn't like mad or anything. They're just like, okay. Yeah. Well, and I, I do think like Sean coming back to Gus at this point and being like, I'm going to see this through.

Speaker: That is probably more of the reason why Gus is so like, fine. Like, thank you for seeing this through. we can go back if it doesn't work, you know? But yeah, very sweet.

Speaker: So the exorcism starts. And of course we, um, the boys you know i don't know how great of a choice the bring the boys into the exorcism is um to be quite honest like at least in the the movie the exorcist like they're both in both of the priests are in there and theoretically like quote unquote armed against the demon like they have their crosses on and they're saying specific like you know specific they're saying specific things from the bible you know to mean what mean are they called verses yeah

Speaker: Yeah, but there is like a specific like script that they're reading. That they're following. Yeah, and like he has to say so like some lines and then Thadakaris has to say lines. um So, yeah, I don't know what it is exactly.

Speaker: Here they're like, rights they're just there. Oh, rights, that could be. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're reading certain rights. Yeah, here the boys are literally just in the room holding her down. Yeah. And that kind was

Speaker: I know. I mean, I guess he needed somebody and the other priest isn't going to help. Yeah, not until he barges in later and then he seems like he's more willing.

Speaker: Well, he barges in because he's like, what the heck are you doing? But then he sees her and he's like, oh crap. Yeah. Guess I better help. Yeah. And there was that moment in the exorcist too where they were like those two...

Speaker: elder priests or whatever were talking about bringing in the exorcist and like who would do it and stuff and they said father caris wanted to be there like or that he wanted to do it and they like oh well a psychiatrist should be there anyway which was kind of interesting i thought that that was like a good idea for i mean and and i don't know if like necessarily that psychiatrist would be a priest but convenient they don't say it like that yeah so maybe it is okay for the i don't know for some outsider to be there yeah ah i suppose i mean the boys last all of two minutes like not yeah they're they're in there they hold her down she says the thing about sean being hot and then sean's like i'm out after a couple seconds well it's a

Speaker: It's when she says, i know about Mr. Reno. So creepy. Yeah. She was creepy. um But she's like, you gave him lead poisoning.

Speaker: lead again. Yeah. Oh, my gosh. Weird. um And then ah Sean's like, takes it personally and just like in the movie right where father caris starts taking it like starts talking to the demon which the other priest had warned him not to do because the demon lies um and then father wesley's like get him out of here gus yeah it is all very intense and exciting and then i think that's when the other priest person yeah and he's like what are you doing and they're like and then he's like oh my god

Speaker: no And so then he comes in to help and Gus is like, good luck, guys. And they run away. Me too, dude. Me too. I'd be out of there.

Speaker: And they both, I mean, they look very shaken up when they're outside in the hallway. Yeah. I mean, yeah. yeah I mean, no yeah matter, I mean, she does a great job selling it for one, but like, even if it's like the circumstances,

Speaker: It's dark and creepy. There's priests. There's like you' the even the idea. Like it's very persuasive. Yes. Yes. that's And I can imagine the the very personal detail really tipping you over the edge and being like, ooh. Yeah. Until he's able to put it together later. Like, yeah. In the moment with everything else. Like, ooh. Mm-hmm.

Speaker: Mm-hmm.

Speaker: Then we cut to the boys, I guess. Well, we get a commercial. And then we find the boys downstairs with the mother. But we hear shouting going on upstairs. So they go back up to look. Theoretically, this is a period of time later.

Speaker: And Father Wesley comes out of the room. And I thought it was very interesting that he said, it's over. She's clean. was like, clean. was like, oh. Interesting way to phrase that.

Speaker: Yeah. Well, I do feel like that's a very... ah christian way to think about things like a purity kind of thing yeah yeah yeah that's a good point the devil and yes not devil yeah um

Speaker: yeah i do like it is sweet to see father wesley like kind of feeling like, yeah, we did it. And then the other piece literally gives him a pat on the back. Yeah. Which is like kind of it is cute. And unfortunately...

Speaker: not their fault but know it's not real but yeah they don't know that but in the moment it is done yeah good yeah yeah um and then it seems like maybe they go back to check on her the next day or later in the day or or whenever and the mother says that she's like herself again which again is very much like the exorcist now this like other entity's gone and her child is back yeah um But we're still not like 100% sure, I guess, what what happened with Agatha. Sean's like still got this little naggling feeling. Now now we're doing it Sean's way. I mean, he still doesn't believe. Even after seeing it, he's like, there's no way. And that is he is the ultimate skeptic of the supernatural. All of it. Yeah.

Speaker: So he goes to the stations talking to Jules, finds out that the tox report from Agatha came back clean. and Sean asks if the drug test tests for all drugs that could be in her system. And Jules says no, just the standard ones. So it didn't test for absolutely everything.

Speaker: This is when Sean goes back to the office and is found looking through Gus's pharmaceutical book. Smart on his part. and Yeah. When he has to do the research, he will. Oh, yeah. And it's also interesting that he is leaving Gus out of it. I feel like that really shows that he is...

Speaker: Because this is Gus's area. Yes. Area of expertise. And we get a um a Billy Joel reference. Cadillac-a-lac-a-lac-a-lac. Oh, is that what that was?

Speaker: Yeah. I did not get the reference, but it was funny. Yeah. Trading in a Chevy for a Cadillac-a-lac-a-lac-a-lac.

Speaker: You have fun. yeah Yeah. I like, I like. It is very fun to just to do that. So good. I like, I like. And yeah, now Sean's kind of like, he for whatever reason doesn't want to cue Gus in. So Gus is like, oh, you're on to something, aren't you? And Sean goes, yep, got to go. And literally just leaves.

Speaker: Well, it it is. It's kind of like the same.

Speaker: It's interesting because it's like Gus's dad killed it a guy, which we always already talked about. But this is like Sean has kind of a bent against this person. ah And so, and and I do think, well, don't know.

Speaker: He will Kluge us in. It's like he has to make sure first because he does tell him before. That's true. The arrest happens. Right, right. Right. As it's happening. Literally the moment. And he doesn't, he's not like gentle about it at all.

Speaker: i mean, he, know he isn't at first and then he sort of is like, I am sorry about this. Yes. um But.

Speaker: it I do feel like a ah part of him wants to like just prove them wrong. Yeah, that feels very Sean. Yeah, he definitely has ah some ego stuff going on there. Yes.

Speaker: So Sean goes back to Henry's, of course, for some more partner advice. when We talked about the partner advice he found here. What do you do when your partner is definitely wrong? And Henry says, you know, tell him respectively ah respectfully. And then we got the wrong, wrong, wrong, and you we need pew all that good stuff. um But we also see here Henry is now addicted first-person shooter games. Yes.

Speaker: Yeah, and you were saying like how this is such an odd plot. And I agree. and i um it feels like one that you could put anywhere. But then earlier, there was that moment that I forgot about where they talk about how Sean had to be tased because he was playing Grand Theft Auto.

Speaker: you're right. Yeah, there's some connective tissue there. And and so it's like we're seeing just how... far someone can fall in a short time. yeah i feel like. Yes.

Speaker: Yeah, that's true. I mean, that this is Henry looks like he hasn't slept in a week. Yeah. He's like barely. giving to insanity oh yeah. So funny. the The line that Sean pulls dad, kids your age should not be cooped up. playing po games They should be out feeding the pigeons and driving with their blinker on.

Speaker: so so good. Yeah.

Speaker: Sean now gets confirmation about Agatha and tox report. He had them test for specific psych meds or specific meds that could cause psychological side effects. And she had L-Dopa in her system, which is a Parkinson's medication. Yes. And shout out to this episode for helping me get a crossword hint in the New York Times crossword that was L-Dopa and no way was yeah and I was like oh that's just like in psych but I love when little like little tidbits like that pop up somewhere else it's so fun

Speaker: So, yes, so L-DOPA is a Parkinson's medication, and Sean says that this could explain the quote-unquote demon possession of Lucy. I don't know why they reference Stumpy from grade school, but they they do for some reason. um I think that – is that the guy who posted on his wall? Oh, yes. wall Yes, posted about Mr. Reno. You're right.

Speaker: um So that explains how Lucy know that knows that. But they're still thinking at this point that Lucy might have also been drugged, that she might have been experiencing psychological side effects, um and that maybe the possession wasn't completely made up.

Speaker: Sean has also done the research to find out that Father Wesley has been taking L-Dopa for his Parkinson's for quite a long time, which...

Speaker: I found this whole scene kind of interesting because Sean is not only explaining to Gus what's happening, but he is also kind of trying to do one of those, like, distraction tactics. Yeah.

Speaker: Father Wesley is being rested in the same moment that Sean is explaining all of this, and it's almost like he's trying to kind of cushion the blow for Gus. Well, it is. It's like...

Speaker: That meme there are two wolves inside him because on the one hand he's like totally mocking him about all of this mercilessly and then on the other like which brings me to sorry and then yeah and then Father Wesley's being taken away in handcuffs. Like, it is kind of crazy that he would approach it this way, that Sean approach it this way. And not 100% kind. More tactfully, yeah, yeah.

Speaker: I mean, he does... he does have a pretty good like rationale or explanation as to why it could be Father Wesley. So i wonder if this is more of like a, right, I'm sorry that this is happening, but like hear me out as to why it has to happen.

Speaker: Yeah. well kind of a And it also reminded me, it's It does seem very similar to when, like, and Gus's dad may have killed a guy when, isn't Jules talking to Sean and Gus while Lassie arrests Gus's mom?

Speaker: Mm-hmm. Yeah. So it's it's interesting to see Sean on the other side of that because Sean is so frustrated ah in that beat. Yeah. um But I do feel like Sean has some bias against Father Wesley. 100%. Oh, without it Yeah, so it's like yeah that I think is informing his his decisions here and like his approach to this.

Speaker: And I don't know why he he's pretty willing after this to entertain that it's not him. Maybe it's like, he takes it far enough that he's like, okay, maybe it's probably not, he's probably not a murderer.

Speaker: Yeah. I ah yeah don't know. Sometimes it's Sean just like picks. He just like something happens and he kind of switches and he sticks with a particular person. Yeah. Like your wife.

Speaker: Maybe it's like he just wanted to beat Father Wesley. Maybe. Yeah, that's a very... And then now that he's like, okay, now let's really solve the crime. Yeah, yeah. I could definitely see that.

Speaker: That feels, yeah, that feels very Sean. i also want to say it's a very similar to High Noonish, like, and the arresting of Hank and, like, how kind of sad that moment is for...

Speaker: the the sun figure or the yes uh the mentee yeah um which is interesting that we have this back to back yeah that is kind of interesting a lassie episode and a gus episode that are so very similar fact yeah and now i'm like trying to think does this have any bearing on like a larger season arc and despero is kind of also like a Someone who's built up and then yeah falls in Sean's eyes all within that one episode. but

Speaker: But maybe there is something about like a the fallibility of our yes our parents, our the people we admire. Yeah.

Speaker: I like that. We're going to have to keep our eye on that for the rest of the season. Very interesting. There's a little bit of that. I mean, there is that with like Yang and Yin.

Speaker: Yep. Yes. I know there's a lot of all all these relationships, which is where we're coming from. So yeah. Ooh. Yeah. Maybe there's something to that.

Speaker: i think you might be onto to something. Alright, let's wrap this up. Alright.

Speaker: Over two hours. It's hard we do movie. It is hard when we do a movie. And I believe the last couple times we've done movies, we've We've, like, actively talked about the movie. Sometimes in the past we've, like, used the movie as reference for the episode, but it's been episode heavy. ah Yeah.

Speaker: This is, like, a fun movie. It's hard to not... I know. and an homage. Like, it's hard to not talk about it kind of shot for shot in that case. um yeah Anyway, we are in kind of the homeless stretch. Yeah. So Gus goes to visit Father Wesley in in the cells, yeah either at the station or...

Speaker: nearby prison like it's not necessarily i think it's in the station i think he's okay i think it's like where we've seen uh the thing that threw me off was he was in a jumpsuit like an orange jumpsuit and i feel like we don't usually see people down in the station like that but it could be yeah that's true process that's a good point i i guess i'd have to look at it again i felt i mean i put them in the holding cells at the station that we've been to many times. yeah Although you're right. It is weird that he'd be wearing that, but I wonder if it was just so Gus could say a man of the orange cloth. That still could be. That is a pretty good line. I do have to say. um Yeah. And it's,

Speaker: the The whole interaction is definitely kind of ah sad. Like, Gus is... Gus, you know, believes that Father Wesley is innocent. And Father Wesley specifically asks if Gus believes that he is innocent. And Gus is like, yes, you know, like without questions. But I need to you to give me, like, further details so I can investigate this for you. Like...

Speaker: did anyone know where your meds were like what did you do with them like could agatha have gotten to them did did someone want to hurt agatha and father wesley of course being a man of the cloth um says that you know he heard about something in confession but he can't share that because of his priestly duties but he does leave gus with a specific proverb proverb 11 6 before he i think that was interesting i wonder if that's ethical I feel like no. I feel like totally not. um

Speaker: Like to give a clue. Yeah. Definitely might be an ethical issue to just be like, here you go. went Giant hint. Mega giant hint. It was the boyfriend. like um Or maybe not even the boyfriend. I think that's who it points to. something about like being unfaithful.

Speaker: Yeah. That's interesting that you say that. I took it as it was Lucy's confession. But I don't know. Hmm. I always thought it was Lucy's confession, like just in watching the episode. But then when he said unfaithful, I was like how? How? Unless Lucy was talking about wanting to break the two of them up.

Speaker: That's what I always thought, but yeah, that doesn't really point to the, like she would not be the unfaithful one, although she would be trying to make someone be unfaithful. Unless this happened between, like something happened between them beforehand and that's why she's trying to break them up.

Speaker: Like if he was already a cheater. That's true. That could be. We don't exactly know. Yeah. I don't get that impression from Cameron. feel yeah he Yeah.

Speaker: That they did something before. yeah But yeah, I don't know. Who knows? But anyway, it's enough. It is. At least enough of a leap. Yeah, exactly. But yeah, Gus is like, I think he was trying to tell me something.

Speaker: Yeah. that There's a fun energy to that scene because he comes back to Henry's house and Sean is finishing painting and trying to steal the Xbox back or whatever. Yeah. um And they're like,

Speaker: you know gus mentions the proverbs sean's like dad where's your bible he's like don't know that's trying to like under something they're throwing the bible around like finds that you know yeah where's proverbs in this thing give it like give it back let me find you know the table of contents contents in this thing yeah yeah it is very fun oh i also loved particular proverb and Sean's like okay let's make a list and oh my god so funny actual burn the hand two in the bush yes yeah that that definitely tells us that he has not been to church a yeah um and then ah when they find it

Speaker: um the unfaithful will be trapped by evil desires and then I love I just love the energy of the way Sean says it yes good and then they run out yeah yeah it's so exciting and it is interesting that again like now sean is like okay let's go save him basically yeah where'd that come from but yeah well yeah and we we've talked before how like ultimately the thing that sean is most devoted to is the truth

Speaker: yeah So at this point now, it's like, let's just figure it out. Now that has proven to everybody that he's the best, now he will go find the truth. And save Father Wesley if he has to. You're welcome, Father Wesley. yeah so they go they go to Cameron's dorm.

Speaker: and I thought, you know, it's all of the gangs all there. Like you can't try and with just love that they all came as my next note. Like, yeah even though they have someone in custody and stuff like Jules and Lassie are there too.

Speaker: Have to do it together. And I wonder if they also are not, I mean, not convinced or don't, don't know. There's enough doubt, I guess. Cause they're, they jump onto it being one of these two very quickly. Yes. too Yes.

Speaker: And Kylie says these too because when we walk into Cameron's dorm, Lucy comes out very quickly in like her pajamas. Scantily glad. Yes, very much so. do love when they get there and...

Speaker: uh sean says you are under arrest for possession of an illegal hot plate yeah which honestly very college like yes sorry you're not even allowed to cook food on your own another way um but he's just joshing and uh of course yeah then they at some point lucy comes out yeah we're comforting each other Yes, of course.

Speaker: and Is that what the church is calling it these days? Yes! So good!

Speaker: And Sean asks Lassie who he thinks did it. Lassie says, definitely Cam. And Sean goes, great. That's how I know it was Lucy. Sean still gets to one-up somebody. yet oh of course.

Speaker: And um we got one of Kylie's favorite rom-com references. yeah Cam, don't be so naive, man. Men and women can't be friends. When Harry and Sally taught us that.

Speaker: It also taught us that women often fake orgasms. yeah And Jules is like... It is funny. like and We talk about like the places Psyche doesn't go and I feel like that is yeah one.

Speaker: And so it's kind of funny to hear them talk about that. Yeah, yeah. um But I do love Jules' face in that moment where Lassie looks at her and she's like, yeah.

Speaker: And so Lucy gets arrested and yay. Save the day. Father Wesley gets out and that's why I do their little back and forth about the movies.

Speaker: Oh, Linda Blair. he is Yeah. Linda Blair in Chained Heat and Red Heat. Two prison movies and they're both having so much fun. Yeah. and it's moments like that because I feel like sometimes Sean is sort of on his own with all of the riffing and the silliness but I love it when they are doing it together yes it's so it feels going to say very like comforting when it's the two of them you know also that like Gus knows these movies these Linda Blair movies just as well as Sean does you were watching them together likely

Speaker: also shout out to linda blair i get why she's an icon and then and pretty much done we talked about the last scene which was the um the confession yeah any final thoughts yeah great movie great episode very fun a little entry for us as we are moving into spooky season yes so that's fun you love the spooky season And next is Sean gets the yips.

Speaker: Another great one. Yes. And no movie to watch. I don't think. Okay. That might actually be great for us. Yeah. Take a little break from the movies. I know that I did look. And then what after that is Bollywood.

Speaker: Oh, okay. So we will have movie for that. Man. These are hit after hit, aren't they? Yeah. This season. Cool. They're, we're in our genre. Yeah.

Speaker: I'm excited. Cause this next episode, um, It feels a little bit more like the gang's all back together again, you know? that Yeah. You're right. We are due kind of for everybody be together. feel like we've been kind of doing like little side quests. Uh-huh.
