Introduction and Welcoming Guests

00:00:01
Speaker
every club every day the global sports podcast network hello and welcome to the daily brighten podcast joined with or joined by the Southampton boys uh greg and zach greg zach how we doing we're we're hanging on in there the best way we can describe it way

Southampton's Season Woes

00:00:27
Speaker
Give over. You literally, about five minutes ago, told me that you're you're upset that we're probably going to miss out on Champions League spots this year. I think it is the time of the season that we have to accept that that but that might be gone.
00:00:38
Speaker
da Guys, don't give up hope. You know, the Champions League or Conference League, you might still have a chance. Oh, we've got luck, we'll have to see. Yeah, I've got to say, it's not been the best start of seasons for Southampton. Four points, only one win, one draw, ten losses. I hate to just keep rubbing it in, you know, I'm sorry, sorry for doing this. Low goal scored, second most conceded. Guys, where's it all going wrong?
00:01:13
Speaker
When you come up from the championship and you are not ready to come up from the championship and you are fourth and you win to play a playoff final and everything is great and the world is amazing and then 50% of the players you recruit turn out to be duds, a lot can go wrong. yeah If you listen to our fan base, it's entirely down to the fact that Russell Martin likes to play out from the back. I don't really know. I don't think with any of the managers that you have that are out there currently,
00:01:39
Speaker
I don't know who you put in and I don't know who they what they think is going to hugely change. think you you strip away the little identity they have and then we end up with our previous relegation season and where we're trying to play four different styles of football and we lose every single game until we go down. so lots and Lots of things. yeah hey Yeah

Coaching and Strategy Analysis

00:02:00
Speaker
question. was actually thinking this because so it sounds like you're actually more on the side Zach of Russell Martin. I know a lot of Southampton fans do dislike him and like think he's too stubborn in the way he's playing and like I guess general football fan out there that have
00:02:18
Speaker
potentially just glimpsed on match of the day of a couple Southampton games seeing this kind of stubborn way that he's playing where he's very very rigid in how he plays in terms of he will stick to this playing out from the back are you for that or are you kind of against it? I ultimately would like whatever eventually starts winning us games however the last time that we did really really well and we won lots of games. We had a manager known as Claude Poel, who you might remember, also took over Leicester at one point, and we fired him because the football that he played was mind-numbing. Possession-based football at the moment isn't much better, to be honest anyway, especially where in our Wolves game we ended up with 70% possession and zero shots on target. However, it is a identity and it is something that the players are learning. We have had a lot of what I would consider to be mishit transfers that just aren't
00:03:10
Speaker
quite fire in the way they want. We've had some young guys come through. Obviously, everyone knows the name Tyler Dibbling, except you don't because you could maybe not buy him off of us,

Club Priorities: Business vs Football

00:03:18
Speaker
please. everyone He's really, actually really bad. So it's it's less of a, it's less of, I think, from my perspective, a really, really liking Russell Martin, and his style of play, but also an acceptance that if the board were going to get rid of him, they would have already got him got rid of him.
00:03:34
Speaker
They don't have the money to cancel all of the contracts of him and all of his coaching staff, because we spent it all on people at Aaron Ramsdale, which was worth doing. And they're far more business focused than they are football focused, which is as upsetting as it is, is going to mean that longer term we will survive as a football club. So I think it's just like sad acceptance. And the fact that there's no point me and Greg's talking about how are we going to fire him every week. Because that's just upon a podcast about whether or not we're going to fire Russell Parker. And the answer always ends up with no. yeah So until that anything actually changes, I'm kind of of the idea that we just got to back the boys until, until

Brighton's Season Highlights

00:04:16
Speaker
something happens. And if yeah they decide, if relegation's like what happens, relegation's what happens. Like,
00:04:22
Speaker
none of us expected to know you know you were a long time ago like a younger brother to Southampton and now you are everything we wish we could be everything that we had one season of being except we just didn't replicate it consistently so yeah What's some opinions? Yeah, tell me about it. How the fate of both sides could not me be more different. Ones fighting for their survival while we're up here, high and mighty, mixing it up with the big boys in the Champions League places. God, every, like, mid-size club's dream, basically, isn't it? Or when you kind of go through the championship. Is that how you saw the season playing out for you guys? Or are you sort of way beyond even your expectations at the moment?
00:05:09
Speaker
Yeah, way beyond our run of games as well. like We've kind of gone through our rough patch as well and we're fifth. Our next six games are on like should be fairly straightforward. We've got obviously you guys who you'd like to think is a win or some sort of a goal.
00:05:31
Speaker
Greg, you can't keep saying that mate. The only other skin we've been for so far. And even they were upset that they won because it meant they didn't fight their managers. yeah it Yeah, then we've got like Fulham, Crystal Palace.
00:05:48
Speaker
I think, who else? We've got someone at West Ham. So that's like very winnable games in our next five. So yeah, this is way beyond I imagine what lots of Brighton fans and our fan base is kind of thinking or thought how the play the season would play out.

Southampton's Squad and Transfers

00:06:07
Speaker
I thought we could contend for Europa League or like the Conference League place.
00:06:12
Speaker
But flirting with the Champions League is absolutely mental and I don't think, yeah, I couldn't have thought of that. For you guys, you said earlier, Greg, that you guys obviously finished fourth, won the playoffs. Do you think that squad was ready to come up, Zach?
00:06:30
Speaker
i think I think parts of it were, and there are players that have matured into it. like you know we we have what Whenever we have these sort of discussions, we have discussions around um we would consider to be like Premier League quality players. So coming up, you you sort of had a a Flynn Downs was, I think, ready to step up. Taylor Howard-Bellis was ready to step up. Jan Bednreck, previous Premier League mainstay. Kyle Walker-Peters. Joe Arribo.
00:06:54
Speaker
on his day and then kind of a lot of players around that, we were kind of like, well, let's recruit to kind of fill those gaps. And some of the others that we'd expect to be doing better. And I think what's happened is that some of those players that we'd expect to do better haven't done as well. Players that weren't even on our radar, like Tyler Dippling at the beginning of the season have ended up being absolute you know revelations for us, regardless of the results. Some players who we've purchased have been what we thought, you know,
00:07:22
Speaker
we didn't realise how much we'd get out of him like Yuki. I know he's not everyone's favourite at the moment because he was at fault for one of the goals. However, at the same time for £5 million, pounds I think he was an absolute bargain sign-in. But then also, ah as me and Greg are been are going to be discussing tomorrow, whenever whatever the Wild Card Wednesday podcast goes out, yeah we're talking about some of our transfers. Yesterday, there you go. Thanks, mate. And some of those and some of those players, you know,
00:07:48
Speaker
that we had at higher expectations of. There's been some that we've spent quite a lot of money on loan fees and stuff. Yeah, but we haven't ended up. There's one of our daily echo journalists is it's got inre in for Evan Ferguson, because, but instead, we spent all that money on Maxwell corny, who if you didn't know, he's actually on loan itself. Because you've seen him play about five minutes. yeah So um don't know if it was a hundred disappointed against Stoke, which I think really sums it up, right? Like if you can't Yeah.
00:08:16
Speaker
be a pacey winger playing against Stoke, then what hope have we got? yeah I think that's it. I think we're just, we have, I think that the players were ready to give it a go. I think that whenever you bring in a huge amount of new players, it's going to upset the balance a little bit more. Some have adjusted to Russell Ball, whatever you want to call it. Some some haven't. And the quality of the Premier League puts us to the sword because when we make mistakes like we did the other day,
00:08:44
Speaker
they will be capitalised on. they when you're playing against Rotherham, they that doesn't happen as much, you know? 100%. And yeah, well ah you mentioned that Evan Ferguson there. Obviously, it seems like you do kind of need a striker. We were actually talking and on our Wildcard Wednesday pod because Brighton announced that they're actually okay with like letting him go out on loan. so And I actually suggested to the guys that we do our podcast with, I said Southampton would be a good spot for them to go and it would give him minutes. It would give him a little run around to actually play and
00:09:17
Speaker
hopefully build some confidence to actually get those goals. Although it could be quite tricky, which is what Bless said. One of our guys said that it could knock someone's confidence if they only score like four goals while they're playing every minute or whatever. But yeah, after the break we're going to be talking about our last week's fixtures. So stick around for that.

And we are back with the Daily Brighton podcast along with Southampton. And we're going to talk about last week's fixture because, boys, you you got

Match Reviews and Player Performances

00:10:15
Speaker
that was unfortunate. It was a prime time game against the big side in Liverpool. And to lose 3-2, I actually thought you guys played very well. How would you assess your performance against Liverpool, Greg?
00:10:30
Speaker
yeah you know The further removed we get from it, the more I'm seeing the positives and sort of feeling the hurt a little bit less. There was, you know, we we knew it was going to be tough. We were without Ramsdale and without Yanny B. and And we still managed to score two goals, two reasonably good goals, well-worked, maybe a questionable penalty, but we don't worry about that. and And, you know, a really good goal from Open Play. And, and you know, we were in front and
00:11:02
Speaker
the problem was we probably scored too early if that's a real thing because I don't think any Saints fan was sitting comfortably at 2-1 up thinking well we got this in the bag but but it was still a good performance even missing those key players and and we've sort of seen it through the rest of the season as well where we have these spells where there's real sort of promise and quality that you can see shining through and it's just It's really about how much longer we can leave it before we start transferring that promise into some actual points and and something useful.
00:11:41
Speaker
Yeah, and you obviously conceded. I mean, Alex McCarthy, I bet your fans must up absolutely despise him after that performance. And that's kind of where you kind of want Ramsdale in, right? Was he injured? I'm guessing that game. But yeah, he's broken his finger. So he's out for a few more weeks.
00:12:01
Speaker
Oh my god, so you've got McCarthy again, music to our ears. In the stadium it didn't look too bad, it just looked like Mo Salah had pulled off a piece of magic and then I watched it back later on on the highlights and ah can't repeat the words that I used to describe what happened there, it was it was shocking.
00:12:21
Speaker
To be clear mate, to to give we we we went we were northern and we were basically pitchside so you could barely see anything. But I knew it was bad when my wife texted me because she was watching the game at home going, aren't goalkeepers supposed to be in the goal? And I think when you get a text like that from my wife, she doesn't really care much about football. ah ah kind of like yeah but it it it is i think that he felt it probably as much as everyone else right like at the end of the full time whistle ramsdale basically came out from the stands yeah to give him a hug because that you know that's gotta be that's gotta be a hit to your confidence your hundred and fiftieth appearance of the club a club that you've probably put a lot of your heart and soul into the last couple of years and then
00:13:03
Speaker
you know, you can see the goal like that. but Yeah, well he's been a long time servant, hasn't he? He's not been too bad for you guys, just probably at the lower levels. And also, it was also the, I mean, they didn't start off very well, because even the first goal you could kind of say his was at his fault. I know it's how Russell Martin wants to play, like just playing out from the back and probably just try and get out quick. but I mean there's a time and a place to try and play out from the back, right? like Distribution has never been McCarthy's strength and that was always our biggest concern with playing him, but but it you know it kind of is what it is. It's a position that we we're going to have to tough out because unless
00:13:45
Speaker
we sort of find a magic spell that's going to fix Aaron Ramsdale's finger much quicker. We've got a little while to go yet. And I don't really see any options. I don't see Lumley, our third choice to keeper coming in. Like there was a period last season when we lost Pazounou who was our first choice keeper and Lumley was supposedly our second choice keeper. But Russell Mine actively chose to play McCarthy over Lumley. So it was a bit of a strange one. So but we'll see what comes from that. But I mean, you guys as well have had like a good run. Right, you're unbeaten in November at the moment, right? So ah yeah, beat Man City, dispatched of Man City, quite like they weren't like they're nothing. we' for
00:14:30
Speaker
boommar Bournemouth did the what hard work to figure out how to beat Man City. Then we pounced on it and found out, oh, actually, yeah, they are beatable, beat them. And then we, to say thank you to Bournemouth, we went to the South Coast and beat them as well. So, yeah, it's been a great couple of games for us. But yeah, that... it was actually It's quite funny though, the the big headedness aside, it wasn't actually our best performance against Bournemouth and I actually thought they were kind of the better team to an extent, they had much more of the ball, they had way more shots. The red card obviously did help them but
00:15:10
Speaker
a We were just more clinical, I think, that we had much more quality on the pitch, like in the especially in the final third. Welbeck's come on leaps and bounds. We say this every single time, every pod every crossover pod that we do. He is just a new man. He's a reformed man under Hertzler. Then Zhao Pedro is like our star boy. And then Ruta playing off both of them is magic. So that's something I'm um'm really looking forward to going forward. Hopefully we do play all three.
00:15:38
Speaker
Yeah we were we were just more clinical than them. Sounding pretty scary to be honest. Well it's like from a top spinning life fantasy team for probably the last three years because he always seems to just randomly get goals that they weren't really talks about but yeah the problem but the problem is is yeah it's it's we you are everything that Southampton wanted to be and whether it's luck ridiculously good recruitment you at one point had a world cup winner in your squad like absolute insanity it's like what Where we wish we would be if it wasn't for lots of change in hands of ownership and bits and pieces like that and and also it's it's fun to kind of.
00:16:16
Speaker
You know, we're both South Coast team, but I've never seen a huge rivalry between now because our rivals, whether they are in the bottom, whether they are not even a club entity anymore, will always be Portsmouth. Yeah. The idea of Bournemouth trying to start a rivalry with us is always very funny. yeah Watching them attempt to start a rivalry with you and then mess up out and find out was was very, very funny. I did hear it labeled the seaside Derby, but I'm not saying that Bournemouth has the same each, if we're being honest. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
00:16:44
Speaker
but it's actually just both being model was not front than pebble yeah the ability to The ability to go 2-0 up but then also even with the red card keep it because the problem is even at 2-0 up without a red card every Saints fan will be going will it be 3-2 by the end of the game and the problem is is nine times out of ten it will end up being that because of silly mistakes or just I guess the mentality of getting over the line You know, you you kept them out until the 93rd minute where a former Saint who probably is only getting game time at Bournemouth now because we gave him a full season David Brooks scored. But this is the thing. But, you know, you look at it is a from a football perspective game ahead of side. It is a club to admire. And my advice will be from a team that 10 years ago got to enjoy that, too. Yeah. Enjoy it while it lasts. But the problem is, is every time anyone's said that to you,
00:17:37
Speaker
you all your players go, you have a new manager and a new season, and somehow you just keep getting higher, as you can say. That doesn't happen to us. We had Lochitino go, we had Coombe come in, and then Coombe went, and then after that it's kind of just been downhill. Wherever we're at now, I can remember at one point we had Sparky in charge, and then we gave him like a three-year contract, and then fired him about a game later.
00:18:01
Speaker
ah it's been It's been a long road for us to be where we are. Yeah 100%. I do envy your your kind of path because it is something that we've not experienced for like a couple years and like well not a couple years like even longer than that like I think maybe seven or eight years, seven years.
00:18:20
Speaker
where we just keep selling our players but recruiting better players like we sold Si Seder everyone thought all this could be this is I know it's big money but he's going to be a big loss Beliebers replaced him we sold McAllister the World Cup winner everyone was thinking oh that's going to be a big loss then we just found Pedro to replace him slightly different positions but and then you get like every single season like Tony Bloom and the recruitment, whoever's doing it, needs an absolute guard of honour at Brighton. Danny Welbeck, you're saying about him, right? like but It's one of those things where if you asked most Offridge football fans what Danny Welbeck's doing nowadays, your your kind of brain would just be like, oh, surely he's off in Turkey. if so yeah But it's not. You've managed to get him back into the Premier League, like scoring quite a lot of goals and just being like a revelation. it like you know it's it's yeah it's
00:19:15
Speaker
It is bad because we tried to do that. We we we managed it two or three seasons, right? like we We brought Aldewald in, he went to Spurs, we brought Lovren in, we replaced Lovren with Van Dyke, both ended up at Liverpool, but then after that,
00:19:28
Speaker
It just kind of hasn't, we weren't able, when we had that one season where we had a lot of change of ownership, we had like Gillette a car, which, you know, yeah Greg's probably going, Oh yeah, we did have him. Yep. Place for Olympia, place for Leon now. it's Like we had quite a few players we kind of brought in and then they didn't work. That that Van Dyke money went on.
00:19:45
Speaker
people like nothing yeah ah Elianusi who played like somehow every game under Hasnutl and did nothing of note until he scored at the Champions League for Copenhagen. so yeah it's it's You guys are a fantastic good footballing story and I just really hope that they don't you don't get dismantled like a lot of the other clubs through just money a essentially yeah yeah 100 and we'll us at the Daily Brian podcast will take that and we will take the next 30 seconds to revel in all those kind words during this ad-froke.

Match Preview: Brighton vs Southampton

00:20:47
Speaker
So guys, it's about time we talk about how this game will play out, how how we think, we wow how we see this game going. And Greg, I'll put it to you. How do you see this going? Look, I haven't predicted a Saints loss all season, and it's not gone that well for me so far, but still,
00:21:11
Speaker
I don't know, it feels it feels like a dangerous game for us. Friday nights historically don't serve us particularly well, but but I've got to stay the optimistic course and I think we might scrape a two-wheel draw this week. to draw Well, that put in a short face because that's the first time I've predicted a draw as well. So much respect to the Brighton boys. To be fair, there have been our last five. I was looking earlier. There have been two draws and then three Brighton wins in our last five, but there are
00:21:50
Speaker
two draws and I think before that I think it was before 2020 where you guys beat us 3-1 or a couple of times as well in the row but it is and then Friday nights like you say it's quite an interesting time to play Zach how do you kind of see the game going is this this way you can see bright and drop points potentially or Southampton do an upset?
00:23:04
Speaker
um,
00:23:05
Speaker
play two up the front, which is what we've kind of hoped for. We've hoped for Archer and Onewatch at the the same time, because the idea of, you know, playing to both of their strengths instead of trying to play to one is probably something that we should maybe start doing. And there are going to be changes because we've still got Jan Bednarak out. We've still got Alex McCarthy out. I think playing Flynn down to the centre back wasn't the smartest idea last game. So it'll be interesting to see what he wants to do and try and attack from the front foot. But, you know, we go into every game I think they go into every game wanting to win, regardless of how it feels. And on our day, if the chances go our way, maybe we could beat you guys. But also to to underestimate you is, know, to to do so at our peril. And it will be interesting to see how it plays out either way. Either way, I'm hoping it will be a good game of football, because it might be draws that we've ended up having a couple of times. But that's usually off the back of, you know, it's usually goals involved, which is at least the nice thing about it.
00:24:05
Speaker
As Greg likes to say, every single match we have will not make or break our season. But ah ah out of the run that we've got, it is probably one of the ones that the the mentality of the fans will be, we should maybe take something from. Whereas, you know, I'm i'm kind of of the mentality of every game in the Premier League, we as we've seen this season, anyone could be anyone, especially with City's downfall.
00:24:27
Speaker
like they haven't even had like any of the the points deductions or the charges go through yet. And they're still going to have like absolute meltdown behind the scenes for that one. say So, you know, who who knows what the future will bring. But I think it will be an exciting game. Either way, I'm hoping for an exciting game. But I just I just don't know. It's so it's so hard as Greg pointed out every time we predict anything.
00:24:51
Speaker
this season, it's just been like, oh, it turns out that everything was completely different. And for some reason, we're now playing like Paul, I know actually left back and Cameron Archer right back. And why don't we just shove a fling down to strike a position? Yeah, why not? So who knows? But I'm hoping for a nice Friday night game to watch either way.
00:25:09
Speaker
Yeah, poor Nacho is an interesting one. He was so... I watched the game against Liverpool and he was unbelievable. He was like holding off Van Dyke and Canate. I'm not like you signed him two seasons ago when you were first in the pram, right? And he was woeful.
00:25:26
Speaker
11 games. Nothing. yeah Nothing. They didn't play for you in the championship. if he Was he out on loan or something? He was out on loan in Turkey, where he put in a good shift, which is what I think brought him back into training. The problem is, that's his level. it's like I think he he came from, I don't know why I know this current guy's career so much, but he came from a Belgium, didn't he? and He was was sick there.
00:25:48
Speaker
hey Did you see one of the things I'll ask you and your audience to do when everyone's finished is to go and have a look at the hat trick compilation of his season, which is like, it sure is a hat trick. Yeah. It's the most uncomfortable hat trick. It looks he can't play football. every I think one of the goals he literally tripped over the ball and it went in the net like it was
00:26:18
Speaker
He's not a gold threat, really. He's just a massive mountain of a man that can hold it up. That is a fear. He did come off with some sort of niggle, but he looked to be milking that a little bit. I think he was just knackered. He's not had a 90 minute aim. He's calling for a stretcher at

Tactical Discussions: Pressing and Defense

00:26:34
Speaker
one point. I was thinking, mate, you want a stretcher just so you can lie down. We had a good laugh in the stands thinking that they were never going to find a stretcher big enough.
00:26:43
Speaker
there was a medic when I was about four foot two as well it is yeah for yeah it is that there are people in your squad that I do fear and that is Tyler Dibbling he has been like some sort of revelation for you guys that's the only kind of hate set but like that's the only worry I kind of have going into this game is is how good Tyler Dibbling has been and a few I think if you get him up against Estepinian who as a Daily Brighton is we have mixed views on likes we don't think he's been what he
00:27:20
Speaker
was before he he got injured and I think he has lost a step he's been cooked a couple times by some wingers that's the biggest fear I have but I think yeah the thing that you guys have to fear with us is if you do play out from the back and it's probably what something that you've grown accustomed to now if you play out from the back our press is actually pretty good like we caught Chelsea out I know it was a couple of games, like, about four or five games ago. We caught them out.
00:27:50
Speaker
three or four times on the press and we scored two goals from it. Liverpool, we played them, we got them on the press and they couldn't handle us in the first half of that game. And then Man City, we came out of the blocks in the second half with the intention to press high and not give them any space. And then that's how we had our comeback. So I think that's where I can see us getting some joy is pressing. I think the really upsetting part is that your press probably doesn't even have to be that good because at some point we will pass it to you.

Exactly. That's the worry. I'm not joking. That is genuinely, I'm thinking one of your centre backs will pass us the ball. Is that something that, well, it is. I've watched you a couple of times, even on matches of day. I think we've given away eight goals this season from what I would categorically say are stupid mistakes, which is insane.

Yeah, they've always been they've always been very sort of important goals as well. Looking at sort of the Leicester game and the Ipswich game and things like that. They've always been from places that we shouldn't. But that's why it flattered Liverpool, right? Because, you know, we we scored against them and all of their goals they scored. Yeah, sure, they scored, but they were really bad goals. so Yeah, they were terrible.

Match Predictions and Rivalries

yeah one thing i will say guys to give you a bit boost your spirits a bit uh it's i can see you guys winning the possession battle so good thank goodness we were worried you are you are in the champion's league places for possession this season and that is commendable i will say impressive stuff

Pass is complete as well. Greg was talking yesterday about whether or not fitness is the problem for our squad. And I'm like, well, maybe if they stop passing to the ball each other to each other every 0.5 seconds and actually stopped to catch their breath, maybe they'd get a run for another sort of 30 feet. Who knows? So yeah, let's go school predictions then. So oh ah ah Greg, you said two all, right? Yeah. Zack, did you say yours?

I would like to think to all as well, to be fair, I like to think that that maybe we've learned some lessons. I don't see us winning, if I'm totally honest, but the the idea we need at least a draw for it to calm down, because even with a win, we're not getting out from bottom place anymore. no yeah like ah you know it There's a lot more on the line for us than than you, but because of the way that you play, I still think that it will just end up being a board draw.
00:30:25

unimportant part of your season and then might be actually quite important to us, you know, so I'll go for two all as well. And this is where I poo on your parade. I'm going to go three nil, Brian. I can't wait for Sky Sports to start bigging it up as well. Like you said earlier, it's like a south coast Derby, the Battle of the Beaches.
00:30:46
Speaker
Yeah. on that You don't have a beach, do you? Our beach is just a dock at this point. That's been over a couple hundred years. No beach. That's I can say. And I cringe every time they do that because I'm thinking, that's just like like do like you said, they do with Bournemouth all the time. They always try and give them a ride.
00:31:07
Speaker
Bournemouth really do want a rival, whereas like for some reason historically I've always seen your rival as Palace and I'm not really sure why. Yeah, yeah, yeah, they are, yeah. The end of the 20th century, Darby. There we go. Yeah, lovely speaking to you guys and I would like to say good luck for the game ahead but I wish you zero luck and I hope Brian would get into these Champions League places and put pressure on City. We're only three points beyond him now. I think we're all a couple of points. There we go. Knock him out in the Champions League places. But yeah, lovely tweaking to you guys and we hope you've all enjoyed listening at home. That's it from me, Jamie G. That's been Greg and that's been Zach. Peace out, guys. Every club.
