Speaker: This is a Muck Stain Productions Podcast.

Speaker: Hello homies and trainers and welcome to Unknown Radio, your mug stain production Pokemon talk show where we take a peek at every Pokemon. I'm Claudia and I'm here with my co -host and very unhinged partner, Catherine. Hello, I'm Catherine. Whilst Claudia brings us the facts, I try and bring the pizzazz. The pizzazz and the Rizz. And the Rizz.

Speaker: All right, we're on number 10 of the Pokedex. Can you believe we've got to 10 already? I actually can't, it's flown by. Yeah, it's crazy. I was wondering if we'd get through the first nine, but we did. And we're here. Somehow.

Speaker: We did it. And this little guy we're going to be talking about, we're going to do a two parter because there isn't much to say that's of any worth. Sweet little Caterpie we're going to start with. Yay. Yay Caterpie. Do you know what his tagline is? The Caterpillar. No, the Caterpillar. Close. This is going to make you really mad.

Speaker: Oh God. He's the worm. The worm. The worm Pokemon. Why have they called it Caterpie if it's based off a worm? Why does it turn into a Butterfree if it's based off a worm? And literally nothing about it says worm at all. It's always Caterpillar, Caterpillar, Caterpillar, but it's the worm Pokemon. No, I'm not having it.

Speaker: Caterpie is a bug type. He is... This is gonna also freak you out. He's a footlong. Fuck off. It's only five of him to make Charizard. Five caterpillars make Charizard. I can't. Imagine you wake, going on a walk in the woods, like in the grass, like a footlong caterpillar comes at you.

Speaker: They could even stand on top of each other and put an orange sheet on top and it's a Charizard. One ticket to Charizard's only dinner. Is it a Charizard or is it five catapies in a sheet? Who will know? Or just in a massive trench coat at the cinema. One ticket for this regular human. I hate that so much.

Speaker: And this little guy weighs 6 .4 pounds. Oh, it's just a baby. Yeah, just a foot long hellish worm. It's like the same weight as my baby when he was born. Oh, it's newborn weight. My little Caterpie. Was he also a foot? No, but he looked like a worm. I think he was bigger than a foot. A foot's not that big, is it? No. Well, no, not really.

Speaker: 12 inches. I was discussing this today, weirdly, how big a foot was. And who would have thought it would have come in handy in the evening? What time to be alive? So, as you already said, the name is just a shortening of the word caterpillar.

Speaker: But why is it the worm Pokemon then? That's a question for Nintendo. Will you just start compiling the questions for Nintendo? I think we should actually. We'll write the really angry letter as well. And do a special podcast episode. A really stern letter. Yeah. I'm good at those. With the to whom it may concern. Oof. And not even kind regards, just regards. And then full name yourself at the end. Obviously.

Speaker: What does this Pokémon look like? It's a little green boy. It looks like a caterpillar. It's got loads of little segments. It's got a little yellow belly.

Speaker: Nailed it. I love, I actually don't mind Caterpie. I think he's quite cute. He is pretty cute. It's the eyes. It's the eyes that's really cute. So yeah, you got that completely right. And then on the top of its head, they have like a Y -shaped red antenna that can be used to produce an odor used in self -defense in case something tries to hurt it. Is it stinky? Yeah, I think it's a pretty stinky odor, yeah. Sounds about right.

Speaker: Try and attack it, you just get face farted. Got Pink Eye from Caterpie. The number one cause of Pink Eye in the Kanto region. Thanks, Caterpie. And then just for you, again, the shiny one is just all yellow. Yeah, he's pretty cute. I'd get on board with that. Yeah, he's very cute.

Speaker: A little fun fact is you might want to get your phone actually to do a Google. This is a Google moment. Caterpie is based on a caterpillar, specifically the Asian swallowtail. Do I really want to type? Oh, there we go. Asian swallowtail. That's actually a butterfly that it's come up with.

Speaker: Maybe Asian swallowtail caterpillar. Yeah, I think that's wise. Oh, I can see it. Right? Yeah. Oh, that's creepily accurate, actually. Mm -hmm. I love it. And it's got, the canopy has this weird like maraca looking thing on its tail and that's made to resemble the horn that many species of hawk moth larvae have on their rear ends too. So it's like a little combo boy. Oh, a little combo boy. Yeah.

Speaker: He's very cute, and he only lives one to two years as our cat people. Yeah, I'm assuming that's kind of the age that they then turned into a Metapod, I would assume. Yeah. Yeah. Do you think when they turn it... I mean, I'm sure we'll find that out later, but when they're turned into a Metapod, do they have to wrap themselves up like real life cat pillars?

Speaker: Yeah, so in the anime, which is kind of different from like all the other evolutions, is they actually do cover themselves in the like string shot as an evolution technique, as opposed to you know, the the cool glowing thing, which I wish they kept that going forward in the anime because it's so it's so much cooler. Oh, no, I agree. Yeah, I could not get my words out then.

Speaker: So like we're talking about this little antenna, they're not completely defenseless because they do have a few tricks up their sleeves. The large eyes on their head can trick and confuse predators into thinking they're dealing with much larger Pokémon, which makes a lot of sense because a lot of insects do also have that. So it's saying it's got big eyes to confuse the predators, thinking it's a bigger Pokémon.

Speaker: Yeah. And they like hide half of themselves in the grass because... They're just little guys. Yeah. They're just little guys. Which, yeah, I thought that was cool. And then you see that a lot. It is kind of cool, yeah. And yeah, with nature, how the, like the butterflies or the moths or whatever would have those scary fake eyes on their wings and such. And then other caterpillars do have what looks like markings on their body to look like eyes. Yeah, no, I like that.

Speaker: Yeah, that's cool. And then secondly, the suction pads on their feet allow them to climb nearly any surface to escape. And they can also use string shot, which is their only move, I've mentioned it twice already, to slow down their enemies and buy time for escape. And then like we already said, that antenna on the head releases a very noxious odor when it is disturbed. You know, he sounds like an all right little guy, actually.

Speaker: Yeah, he's always on the defense of this dude. He means no harm. He just wants to live long enough to turn into a metapod and I can respect that. I can see, actually. I'm here for it. Bless him. He's just trying to get from A to B. And the natural predator is the Pidgey. So I feel sorry for them because Kanto is riddled with Pidgey. It is, but it's also riddled with Caterpie.

Speaker: So maybe it cancels each other out, but how many catapies are needed to feed one Pidgey per day? Well, seeing as it's a foot, like I don't actually know how big a Pidgey is, but a foot -long meat, like you've had a foot -long sub before, that fills you up. Yeah. So I imagine a foot -long catapice is going to fill you up. Yeah, maybe one catapice can feed a couple of Pidgey as well, so maybe it's not too bad. Yeah. Very sad though. Think about this logically.

Speaker: I don't like thinking about Pokemon eating Pokemon. Well, I saw a seagull eating a dead pigeon the other day and it was the grossest thing I've ever seen. That's disgusting. Was it a 30 year old pigeon? I don't know. It was absolutely vile. It made me feel sick. It was really going at it. He was a hungry guy. You're welcome. Thanks for that.

Speaker: So, Caterpie are known for their great appetites. They can evolve very quickly and eat up to 100 leaves a day to do so, including leaves much larger than themselves. That's kind of cute. I'm wondering how many leaves in Viridian Forest are over a foot long. I...reminds me of that song. You know, the Caterpillar song we used to sing at primary school? No. Like, Cecil is a caterpillar. Cecil is my friend.

Speaker: Last time you saw Cecil, he was this big. I said, whoa, Cecil, what have you done? I've eaten all the leaves of the garden. We did not sing that. We sang Ring Around a Rosie.

Speaker: I can't believe you never did the Cecil as a caterpillar, mate. That was better. You should rewrite a version about Caterpie. On it. Alright, thank you. So as it grows and develops over time, we've already mentioned this, but it sheds its skin many times before finally cocooning itself in thick silk. Like a snake. Yeah, and they thrive in their native habitats combined with the large clutch sizes of Butterfree. Oh, that's cute. Yeah.

Speaker: I like it when the Pokémon live in like a little community. Me too. It makes me happy. Me too. And then they can look out for each other too, because these guys aren't too, like, not able to take care of themselves because they do have these defense mechanisms. But they're defense mechanisms, they're not really attacking boys.

Speaker: No, they're not. They're just there to make themselves into Metapods. That's all they need. Which explains why they evolve so fast too. I think they evolve at like level eight or something ridiculous. Yeah, and then you just have to keep getting XP for your Metapod. So on that note, shall we go ahead and evolve our little Caterpie? Are we doing the questions before we evolve him?

Speaker: Now let's go ahead and evolve him and then we can merge the questions. I love that. Let's go. All right. All right. So he covers himself in a nice little cocoon and we will move on to number 11 in the Pokedex, which is Metapod. And do you want to take a stab at what his tagline is? If it's not the Pod Pokemon, then why are we here? It's the cocoon Pokemon.

Speaker: That makes more sense actually, I'll take that one. I'll take that one, that I was wrong. But I'm not wrong about Caterpie's tagline, that's stupid. Yeah, Caterpie's one is stupid. I would prefer the Pod Pokémon because it's meta Pod, and then Katoona can be the Cocoon Pokémon, but you know.

Speaker: Oh my god, I bet Cocoon is going to be the Pod Pokemon, isn't it? Oh, that's going to rage me so much. I'm not going to tell you. Oh, I'm already mad. You're going to have to wait. That's the beauty of this Pokedex journey, I'm sorry. Fuming.

Speaker: So little Metapod is a little bit bigger. He is two foot, four inches. So he's over doubled in size, which makes sense. He's hardened all the time. That's all he can do. Yes. Only harden and struggle. Yes. And he weighs 21 .8 pounds. Oh, so he's seven times. No, six, three, almost four times what he weighed as a catpea. Mm -hmm.

Speaker: That's quite a lot. So he's quite a big, hefty man. Yeah, he's a big boy. Yeah. What does he look like? Um, he's, I've always wondered this. I've always thought he looks like a green rock. He does. He's very rock -like looking. It's weird. Yeah, like he's very pointy. And I've always wondered how something so cute goes to something so pointy. It's like a rock and a banana had a baby that was green.

Speaker: I don't want to agree with you because that's stupid, but I don't think you're wrong. Right. I also feel like when you look at it from the wrong way round, like from side on, it kind of looks like it's got a nose. Yeah. Those little, um, the sticky out areas in its back. Yeah. It looks like a man with a nose and a really defined chin. The man and the moon. Yeah. There you go. The, the metapod is the moon. Yeah. Solved it.

Speaker: The shiny version is like this really vibrant orange. Oh, that's cool. I like that. Like a fall leaf. It's weird. Sorry, a what leaf? Like an autumn leaf. Oh, right. Yeah, I know that color. And then its name is a combination of metamorphosis and pod. Oh, that's cool. Yeah, I liked that. I like that.

Speaker: And this guy lives from two to three years, so you would assume that the two years is from being a catapy and then they spend a year if, you know, they don't get XP as a Metapod before they evolve, which is a long time to just use Harden. Well, that's why you always put that as your first Pokémon and then bring them back in. Oh, so they get the extra XP. Did you never do that? No.

Speaker: How did you get your Metapod to evolve? I think mine had tackle from when it was a Caterpie. Oh, I like that. Yeah, it could keep that. Have you seen the infamous episode in the Pokemon Indigo League where Ash has his Metapod and then is battling another Metapod? I actually haven't, but that sounds like they just stand there and do nothing.

Speaker: Yeah, they just stand there and use harden until they run out of hardens and then you struggle. I love that. Yes, it's cinematic. Beautiful. I'll watch it next week. So this little dude is based on a butterfly chrysalis. And then they're saying they're going on from there possibly that of the cabbage white butterfly due to its pointed shape and green color. Oh, do you get cabbage white butterflies in? I never thought about it. And I don't think I've ever seen one.

Speaker: Yeah, we get a few around here. I love that for you. I like those. Yeah, they're quite cute. There's a lot. I'd say there's more this year than normal, actually. I'll have to googled it and it is dead on.

Speaker: Ah, well, that's good to know. Thank you, Google. Yeah, we don't really have... I don't really see many butterflies here at all. There might be the odd monarch or two, but we get more dragonflies than butterflies, which is sad. I say that. I reckon the crocodiles eat them all. Or alligators. An alligator eating a butterfly? Yeah, like just for fun. Like a giant cat. You know how cats get them in their paws? I guess they just sit there with their mouths open.

Speaker: Yeah, that's sad. You can tell I've never met an alligator before. Sorry, there's still time. When we get paid, when I get paid to come to Florida for a business trip. Yeah, and we can go to Gatorland. Yep, beautiful.

Speaker: So the Metapod is an inset -like Pokémon, like you said, it looks like literally a cocoon, and it's lumpy, and its eyes are still clearly visible and appear dazed, drowsy, or angry for reasons unknown. That's straight from the Pokédex. I reckon, like, it's levelling up. It's kind of pregnant, like it's growing a whole butterfly.

Speaker: You know, it's got to be tired. It's got to be exhausting because if it's anything like an actual, you know, caterpillar chrysalis butterfly situation, it's just goo in there. Like it makes the shell and then turns to mush inside of that shell. And that is horrifying to me. It like dissolves it and then rebuilds it. Yep. Yeah, that's got to be a lot of work.

Speaker: All right. And do you still have a brain at this point? Or is that also a mush? Is that why it looks so dazed? Oh, dang. It's creepy. Yeah. So to avoid attacks, Metapod stay motionless and simply wait. They are very patient and they endure whatever pain they must to reach their final stages. That's hilarious. I mean, they just accept death then. Yeah.

Speaker: Fair play to him. And do you know why they stay so still? So they can grow? They must remain upright while biding their time or risk spilling out their innards. That's vile.

Speaker: So if you just walk around and go push over metapods, you're essentially emptying their guts of everything. Yeah, because of that, they're regarded as nearly useless in battle. They are useless in battle. They just have to stay very still or they spill out their innards. I wonder if it comes out of the eye hole. I like to think it comes out of the head like a, like they've got like an air hole.

Speaker: Like a dolphin, blowhole. That's the one. Yeah. Cause if a lot of stuff's happening in there, there's going to be some gases from all the sloshing that's going around. Oh, that's so great. So yeah, the soft body is predicted by the hard outer shell as it undergoes metamorphosis. While the shell is said to be hard to steal, a sudden powerful impact could also cause the liquids.

Speaker: to pop out. Lovely. It's horrible. And then it cannot do anything other than stay motionless to rebuild its cells, and they live in temperate forests and jungles and often in big groups. But do you know the Pokémon Pikipek? No, it sounds made up.

Speaker: That sounds like what your mum would call Pidgey. Is that Picky Peck? It's like a woodpecker, a little Pokémon, but that is its natural predator of Metapod. And you can see how that goes down. Oh, do you think it slurps it like a milkshake? Yeah, I do. Oh, grim.

Speaker: And so poor Metapod is really all I have to take out of this. This poor man.

Speaker: I've just grossed out really. We'll go on to if we like it more later, because we are moving into our question section. So you're taking a little walk through Viridian Forest, as you've just started out your journey as a Pokemon trainer, as with established with your Charmander. And you come across a little Caterpie. What do you do? I pick it up on second. What's it going to do?

Speaker: put out a stinky smell nah he's coming home with me no just put it put him in your pocket and run away i'd just carry it if he's only six pounds carry that with one arm mate add a lot it looks like a cuddly guy yeah i reckon he'd be quite friendly i reckon he's got a fur on him like caterpillars do squishy get one of them vivariums just keep him feed him 100 leaves a day

Speaker: I mean, that's quite a lot of leaves, but I live in the countryside. I reckon we could do it. I reckon you could too. You got this. And then next to this little Caterpie, there's just a Metapod just there. I'm not being funny, but if I've got a Caterpie, why would I want the Metapod? That's true. I know my Caterpie is going to turn into a Metapod, but if it's just a Metapod on its own, I'd take it, but just for my butterfree. You'd have to be careful not to spill it.

Speaker: Yeah, I'd let you know I've got one, but I won't tell anyone else until it evolved. Just keep it hidden away like a... Like a dirty little secret. You dirty little metapod. Don't you spill your juice on my sofa. I hate that, but you know, I love the quote, dirty little metapod.

Speaker: So, other than battling, what functions would a canopy have, do you think? It's a shame it only eats leaves, because if it ate grass, like gardening. I suppose leaves gardening too, like pruning all the leaves from like hedges and stuff. We've got loads of hedgerows in England.

Speaker: Oh, so it could be like a good asset for like a lawn business to have. Yeah. They can get on the grass and they can just pop a little Caterpie on the hedge and just pick it up at the end when it's done. Yeah. That's quite beautiful. I think he'd be just really useful, just in like any garden or wood kind of area. Like National Trust, I reckon, would love him because they've got loads of trees in the National Trust place, isn't they?

Speaker: Oh, yeah. And they could just keep them at bay a little bit with the canopy while feeding into, you know, the natural ecosystem because, you know, enough leaves, it evolves and then the butter freeze can pollinate. Exactly. It's like a never ending cycle. Metapod is amazing. No use for Metapod. Not at all. Just to be there. A traffic cone, maybe you can use the orange one as a traffic cone. No, because if you knock it over, it's liquids gonna fall out.

Speaker: More mess than it's worth, really, isn't it? Yeah, just put them all in a cage. Oh, bless it. Not in a cage, that's a bit harsh. In a field. Just a nice statue. Yeah. We'll put a conservation sign on so people don't go in. Just wrap the whole thing in a do not cross police tape. Yeah. Oh, yeah, I suppose so. That'll work. I think just a polite sign.

Speaker: line them all up in a nice little area. That'll be fine. Yeah. And then the Caterpie also has string shot and that could be useful for like... Nothing. I think they say in the anime that it can be used for like facials. You can use it for like a silk. For facials? Yeah, like there's like a swing shot. We can use what? Caterpie. Right? Caterpie likes facials. You heard it here first. There you go.

Speaker: Like when turtles have their eggs, and then people mark out where the nests are, so they don't go digging in there. We'll sort it out.

Speaker: Oh God. It's facials enough that it turns into Metapod and uses Harden. And then its goo falls over. It just spills its juices. Yeah, its goo spills out. I thought we would be able to take this one seriously. I told you, I'm unhinged tonight. So what does canopy eat?

Speaker: um leaves we already established this yeah it's right moving on moving on what does metapod eat apparently nothing it just absorbs its own juices all right next question let's go could you eat a catapee um i don't know i guess so yeah you can eat caterpillars yeah it's just not if you had to yeah if you had to yeah but nah

Speaker: I feel like eating a normal sized caterpillar, I guess you could swallow it whole if you really needed to. But you cannot do that with one that's one foot long. Like a snake. Just deep throat a caterpillar. All right. Would you eat a Metapod? Would you stick a straw in there and go to town? Absolutely not.

Speaker: I could imagine that maybe back in the Legends Arceus days of that being a delicacy.

Speaker: Yeah. Oh yeah, for sure. You could just put the whole thing on a fire and then it will cook inside of itself and then you just slurp it out. Ooh, I hadn't thought of that. Cooking the insides. I reckon it'll make it less gross. Still no. I don't know. Yeah, I wouldn't. Unless it's like an egg. Ooh. You know what? That would be the kind of thing that they'd put on I'm a celebrity to get me out of here. Don't you do scrambled metapod on some taste? No. With a side of sausage.

Speaker: If I had to, it depends how much they're paying me, really. I don't think I could do it. But again, if they offered me money, probably, which times are tough. Yeah. Cost of living, you know. I might give it a taste. In this economic climate.

Speaker: Yeah, you got to be a bit of an addict for pay. You got to get money. So you're hanging out in Viridian Forest and you're tired and you find a nice little bar.

Speaker: in Viridian Forest, you with me? I'm with you. I'm here. I already know my answer. Yeah. And there's a Caterpie and a Metapod in there. Would you win if you decided? Yeah, you would. Hands down. 100%. I could take probably about six Caterpies, I reckon. I think so.

Speaker: And a metapod, I could just stomp on them and they're goners. They're like snails. You could just arrange them like dominoes and then push the first one over. Yeah, exactly. Then all the liquid will be on the floor. Caterpie comes along, he's going to slip on that liquid. He's a goner. Just chuck him out, wouldn't I? I've got no doubt. Just like one of those boss battles in a video game where they just keep coming and waves. I got this. Yeah.

Speaker: Now I know how heavy one is, how heavy it is. I know how heavy my son was at birth. You know, I could definitely lift that two of them above my head at once. Yeah. Pick them up by that little tail and just throw them. Swing them round. Bam. They don't seem like they got much structure. So I reckon one solid. Yeah. One solid hit on the ground. It's a goner. Yeah. See, easy win. Yeah. That's the easiest win yet, I think. Yeah, I do.

Speaker: So on that note, we covered him. Smashed it. All right. Do you like Caterpie more or less? I like Caterpie more. Same. Just because he's hella cute. But I was always a Caterpie fan though. He is my favorite out of the two little bugs in the first game, yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, but I think I like him a bit more now, just because I know he's always on the defensive. He's quite a cute little guy. Yeah, he's got a bit of a personality now and I like learning that he looks like the Asian swallowtail caterpillar. Yeah, I like that little factoid. That was a really cool little factoid right there. Yeah. What about Metapod? Less, I'm grossed out. The thought of it, the fact I've had it in battle with me, it could have spilled out in my pokeball. Mm -hmm. No, I like him less.

Speaker: I thought the same thing. I didn't really have any opinions other than he's useless, but just the idea of him makes me want to vomit. I love a few people like that too. The first Pokémon that's made me want to vomit. Thanks, Metapod. You've ruined. It's a crime. You are a hate crime, Metapod.

Speaker: at least it's not pride month oh we have to find a pokemon for pride month oh it's got to be wester mime oh he's quite clearly gay

Speaker: And on that note, that's the end of our episode. Thank you all for listening. Thank you for listening to us completely fucking obliterate Metapod. We hate you, Metapod. Right. Crush you later. Just spill Metapod juices on you later.

Speaker: I hate it. See you next week, where we will evolve this monstrosity. Bye! Bye!
