Introduction and Co-hosts

00:00:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome, welcome, welcome everybody to the Daily Premier League podcast. It's Sunday, the 5th of October, the final game of what has been an absolutely intriguing, fascinating round of fixtures has literally just finished. As always with me is my old pal, my old op-po, indeed my homie.
00:00:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think I could describe him as now. He is the Pulitzer Prize winning prince of podcast punditry It's Nick Britton. How you doing, bro?
00:00:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
How is it hanging?
00:00:44
Nick Britten
Yeah, I'm not quite sure I'm um um liking this vibe but that you are giving me in your newly refurbed office. I don't really, not sure.
00:00:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, do you like it? Do you like it?
00:00:52
Nick Britten
Yeah, it's different. It looks a bit different. ah Yeah, so I don't really ever want you to describe me as your homie ever again.
00:00:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, okay then. Fair enough.

Podcast Agenda Overview

00:01:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Next time you're out with the gang in the ghetto, i' i'll I'll say he's no homie of mine.
00:01:01
Nick Britten
We are great mates. yeah but We are great. No.
00:01:06
Nick Britten
No, but if you went anywhere, Ken, as a...
00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you'll get a cap in your ass, as they say.
00:01:10
Nick Britten
no Nobody ever says that in your house in the very, very lovely suburban part of Derbyshire.
00:01:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is true. This is true. This is true. Right. So what we're going to do today, a quick run through yesterday and today in terms of the total results, because it's very important. The one the big result everybody obviously wants to know about is who is the best predictor of Premier League games. We'll obviously spend a lot most of the podcast talking about that. But then we'll take a closer look at four of the games that have happened in the course of the last 48 hours, 24 hours.
00:01:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And do a deep dive into Chelsea, Liverpool. I think that's a obviously the big game the of the weekend. Man United, Sunderland, Newcastle Forest and Everton against Palace. Four very interesting games. They're all interesting.
00:01:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bournemouth beat Fulham 3-1 at home. Leeds lost 2-1, of course. Spurs won 2-1 at Leeds. Arsenal won 2-1 at home to West Ham. Man United, of course, won 2-0 at home against Sunderland.
00:02:05
Nick Britten
2-0. 2-0. Arsenal 1-2-0. know ah one two no
00:02:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd say

Game Predictions Recap

00:02:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
2-0. 2-0 Arsenal. Chelsea, of course, beat Liverpool Villa beat Burnley 2-1. Everton beat Palace 2-1. Newcastle, hey, beat Forest 2-0. And Wolves drew with Brighton 1-1. And just finished City. Man City have just managed to cling on to a 1-0 victory over Brentford. So, all in all, just to set the record straight, Nick successfully predicted five of those ten results...
00:02:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ken predicted six of those, that's six of those results, making me this week's winner. So, hey, well done, me.
00:02:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. OK, so before we get on to those four games, anything else from the other six games? You just either caught your eye before we move on to the ones you want to focus on.
00:03:00
Nick Britten
Not particularly. It was fairly routine. So we all expected Arsenal to go and beat Manchester City quickly. and for Sorry, fairly easily.
00:03:10
Nick Britten
you know what? let me get my words right. Everyone expected Arsenal to beat West Ham.
00:03:16
Nick Britten
It's only because I looking at the Man City stuff. Literally the game just finished. Everybody expected Arsenal to beat West Ham comfortably and they beat them comfortably. I don't think winning, Tottenham winning away at Leeds was a massive surprise.
00:03:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:03:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Neither of us predicted it.
00:03:27
Nick Britten
Yeah, but it wasn't a massive surprise that it happened.
00:03:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:03:29
Nick Britten
i i think some of the games, and we talked about this yesterday, anyway some of them you could, any any result you could give, it's not going to be massive. You could see Leeds winning, you could see a draw, you could see Tottenham winning. And then of the games today, Villa beating Burnley, very, very expected, I think.
00:03:44
Nick Britten
Wolves, for the second time in a week, chucked away a very late goal. They could be sitting on six points instead they've got two. Not as late as last week, to be fair, but still with only four minutes to go, Brighton got an equaliser there.
00:03:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
love want
00:03:56
Nick Britten
Still haven't won a game. No, they've come mighty close in the last two occasions. They are getting better. And nobody expected, ah don't think, Brentford to get much out of Man City. And indeed, they got nothing. Although was a much closer game in the end than perhaps it it certainly looked like it was going to be after eight minutes when Haaland scored.
00:04:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was.
00:04:12
Nick Britten
And the second half, Man City stepped off the gas big time. Brentford put the foot on the gas. And it was closer. was closer.
00:04:19
Nick Britten
Brentford had a couple of very, very good presentable chances to get point out of it.
00:04:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Indeed it was.
00:04:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, they did.
00:04:23
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:04:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, they did. And City without Haaland would be a completely different kettle of fish. But, of course, Haaland is, as we've noted many times, something of an alien.
00:04:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Right, let's take a closer look at four of those

Chelsea vs Liverpool Analysis

00:04:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
key games. that Obviously, I think everybody was saying that the key game of the weekend was the Chelsea-Liverpool one.
00:04:41
Nick Britten
Thank
00:04:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fascinating game, actually. at Liverpool, third successive defeat. Wheels definitely seem to be coming off here. Loads of changes.
00:04:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Liverpool now have conceded nine goals. ah Arsenal, just as a comparator, have conceded three. think it tells you everything you need to know about Liverpool. Caicedo's goal, absolute...
00:05:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bullet. Fantastic. ah But generally, I thought Chelsea looked pretty good in the build-up all the way through the game. it thought they were definitely on the front foot. thought Liverpool, again, appeared very much out of source. What was your take on it?
00:05:23
Nick Britten
Pretty much so. ah think it was much better from Chelsea. I'm taking all the credit for this, by the way, because obviously on yesterday morning's podcast, I was saying how disappointed I've been with Chelsea and how average they've been and inconsistent they've been.
00:05:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, right.
00:05:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, OK.
00:05:36
Nick Britten
Last night, without a shadow of a doubt, last night, I thought that they were much, much better, much better.
00:05:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we know they listen, it but all of them listen to it.
00:05:47
Nick Britten
They were the kind of Chelsea that I'd want to see. Vibrant, quick, We know they've got young teams. they've got lots of pace all over the pitch. And fantastic to see the the winning goal yet again. Late, late, late, late, late goal. 96th minute, Estadio.
00:06:01
Nick Britten
And we talked about him. Actually, we talked about him on the other podcast that we do, Road to World Cup podcast.
00:06:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:07
Nick Britten
ah The Brazilian youngster who is expected to kind of play in the World Cup for Brazil next year and really making his mark. Lovely goal, by the way. Really smart finish.
00:06:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a good goal, but you know one of the things that struck me, and this is not, by the way, likely to win me ah the Nobel Prize for football punditry, but liverpool Liverpool's full-backs It's just a horror show.
00:06:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, with watching that goal Esteveau scored right at the end, I mean, what was Andy Robertson doing? I mean he was way too narrow. He just let him drift off him, wide to the right.
00:06:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, the only chance they were going to have of scoring in that situation was somebody knocking it over and somebody following it in at the pava post. But Robertson just gets pulled across to, like, the penalty spot.
00:07:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah I mean, he just didn't know where he was.
00:07:04
Nick Britten
Just sleeping.
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
He just lost any kind of sense of his kind of spatial awareness.
00:07:05
Nick Britten
Yeah, just sleeping.
00:07:10
Nick Britten
Yeah, I think he just didn't know where Stavio was and he's coming on the blind side. just is's just He's literally just just been too quick.
00:07:19
Nick Britten
His movement's too quick, his speed of thought's too quick, and Robertson was just half a yard or half a second too slow to react to it all.
00:07:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:07:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, but but the full-backs, I mean, I know Robertson went on for Kerkhez after about 60 minutes, give or take. ah It just seems to be a problem a really big problem area for Liverpool is these full-backs.
00:07:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
They seem to have lots of people, you know, they they played slobbish at it, didn't they, Dair, earlier in there?
00:07:46
Nick Britten
They played Slobber's Lie at full-back. They played Frimpong at full-back. Obviously, Connor Bradley played yesterday. Kirkhead started left-back. Roberson came on to replace him. Yeah, they're struggling to find rhythm and struggling to find consistency in that position, certainly.
00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Honestly, I think i think if if any team looking Liverpool now, yeah the big message is get it to the wide men. Get it to the wide men because they're just not coping. Just not coping on the on the flanks in the defence.
00:08:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Salah continues to be underwhelming, I would say. you had a couple of chances. He had one good chance yesterday. ah You expect him to bury, but no one ever, I think, for a second thought he was about to do that.
00:08:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just not firing for Salah at all, is she?
00:08:28
Nick Britten
Not firing for Salah, not yet firing for Isaac. Slobber's Lie, we talked about this last season, isn't great in that position, isn't great in a 10. He's better further back.
00:08:40
Nick Britten
So, yeah, just lots of just lots of issues going on. Lots of issues. And
00:08:47
Nick Britten
you you expected Liverpool to do better. You expected Liverpool to do better than they're doing. I really do. And I don't quite know what the answer is.
00:08:58
Nick Britten
I'm glad, I mean, they'll be glad there's a very, there's an international break coming up now.
00:09:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
00:09:02
Nick Britten
Just give time to breathe and relax. Because think three weeks ago when they played 5-1-5.
00:09:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everyone who's written this season off.
00:09:09
Nick Britten
And I know there'd be some late goals. I know they hadn't been great, but they played 5-1-5. And and to to look at where they are now, suddenly after three games or so later. Yeah.
00:09:20
Nick Britten
Arnie Schlopp's got a lot of work to do to try and get this team firing.
00:09:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, the thing that... It hasn't happened, but the thing that occurred to me yesterday afternoon was if Palace had beaten Everton, and we'll come to that again because Palace should have beaten Everton. If Palace had beaten Everton, Liverpool would have been in third now.
00:09:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean... it just
00:09:41
Nick Britten
Yeah, only two weeks after we were saying, oh there could be an eight-point gap at the top of the league between them and Arsenal.
00:09:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's absolutely falling apart. But what's starting to appear to me is that this narrative early in the season of um aren't they such champions who are to keep getting these late goals actually was papering over the cracks of why they had to have the late goals.
00:10:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because their defence is so ragged that they they yeah that was the only way they were going to get anything out the game.
00:10:09
Nick Britten
and
00:10:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, hey...
00:10:11
Nick Britten
but yeah Curiously, they're losing to very late goals.
00:10:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I mean, that's what's going to happen, isn't
00:10:16
Nick Britten
very late minute very Very late winner for Palace last time out. a Very late winner for Chelsea yesterday.
00:10:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
it? It's season of late goals, actually.
00:10:23
Nick Britten
It is the season of late goals. There's so many late goals.
00:10:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah spent That's been the theme of the season.
00:10:26
Nick Britten
It's obviously
00:10:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, as we know, as only Slott knows, in football it pays to get your team

Man United vs Sunderland Review

00:11:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Manchester United against Sunderland. You, by the way, have this down as, I believe, a Sunderland victory. You did. had it down as a draw. It was neither. Man United won and won rather comfortably, I thought. What was your take on game?
00:11:33
Nick Britten
Yeah, the curse of Ken Davis strikes again because it it was only on yesterday's podcast whereby you were waxing lyrical about Sunderland and saying how joyous they were and how good they were.
00:11:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Six out ten. Oh, yeah.
00:11:44
Nick Britten
They were poor yesterday.
00:11:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
First half.
00:11:46
Nick Britten
No getting away with it. There's no getting away from it. It was probably their worst performance of the season so far, coupled with ah very good performance from Manchester United. Yes, so certainly in first half. The game was... I'd say the game was done and dusted.
00:11:57
Nick Britten
ah ah But the Man and the Man and Man put themselves in a very, very, very good position.
00:11:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, after 35 minutes really.
00:12:03
Nick Britten
Great to see... I'll tell you what, it was great to see Mason Mount score a goal like that because that's the sort of goal that that we used to see from him when he was coming up through the ranks.
00:12:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, nice.
00:12:12
Nick Britten
We obviously saw a lot of him when he was on loan at Derby. and he was scoring those kind of goals. And it's just kind of gone a little bit awry for him. Obviously had his injury issues since he joined Manchester United from Chelsea.
00:12:24
Nick Britten
But if they get him fit and firing and playing properly, he's a real addition. He's a real addition. And I thought he was excellent yesterday.
00:12:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it was a very, very finish, very smooth finish.
00:12:30
Nick Britten
thought he played really well.
00:12:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
He sighed a kind of blindsided the keeper and just swept it past him.
00:12:32
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:12:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we have to say, though, and a big part of this was After me saying, you know, what a fantastic job the Sunderland manager's done, he set him up all wrong. And, and you know, he had to change it. And he did change it to be fair to agree.
00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
He did change it. ah Went to a five at the back. And after he went to a five at the back, course, they were 2-0 down by that point. But when he went to a but a back five, ah everything looked a lot more solid. And Man United weren't really anything like the threat they were before.
00:13:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But for the first, they were 2-0 up at the same time.
00:13:07
Nick Britten
No, but they were 2-0 up. They were 2-0 up at this stage. And therefore, that it's not incumbent on them to go chasing chaing the game, leaving themselves open at the back.
00:13:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:13:15
Nick Britten
All the things they have been doing of late. And when Sonny Lamans was called upon, it was his first game, obviously, he made a very good save, actually.
00:13:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:13:23
Nick Britten
He made a good save.
00:13:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
made kind of Made an important save at the end, think. And he just looked a lot more solid. He just looked solid. And he just looked accomplished. Looks like a good keeper. I tell you is a good keeper, Rufs.
00:13:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Rufs, however you pronounce it, for Sunderland. He made a lot of pretty spectacular saves yesterday, as he always does. He's a top, top keeper.
00:13:45
Nick Britten
No, he is. And we've talked about that in as much as Sunderland had a great start to the season. But there's two or three games where the keeper's kept them in it.
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:55
Nick Britten
And if if he gets injured or he goes off form or something happens, that's going to be a big blow. So as much as we admire Sunderland, a lot of it is to do with the fact that goalkeeper's playing so well.
00:14:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. He was he was outstanding. Certainly first off yesterday, everything down the right-hand side for Man United was a success. I mean, it was just cross after cross after cross, ah shot after shot after shot. It was it was good performance by United.
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you reckon...
00:14:23
Nick Britten
Yeah, thought you were. I mean, worthy of a mention. We talked about Mason Mount. Certainly worthy of a mention is Ahmad, who I thought had a fantastic game.
00:14:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:14:29
Nick Britten
I thought he fantastic game. You know, running with a ball, giving players difficult time. He was up against Masuako in the Sunderland. His man who was meant to be marking never got to an near him all afternoon.
00:14:42
Nick Britten
thought he terrific. Really, really good game.
00:14:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and and and in fact, it was a much more assertive performance by Man United all over. I mean, they were they were running at them, which was nice to Remind me slightly of the first game against Arsenal. They looked a confident team. They looked, you know, obviously completely under control or in control.
00:15:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, do you think, though you wouldn't think of it, you wouldn't think it looking at Amerim's persona. I mean, I know they scored. He just kind of shrugged and turned around and walked back to the bench. um Do you think this has brought Amorim quite a lot more time, or do you think, again, is this a turning point is what I'm asking, or was it too early to say that?
00:15:20
Nick Britten
and lonely good to point if they It'll only a be turning point if they go to Liverpool and win, which I know is a really kind of difficult thing to go and do. and And it's easy it's easy to say
00:15:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not anymore.
00:15:34
Nick Britten
But if you then if you win the game and don't win your next three, then the pressure is just piled straight back on you. And this looks like ah an incident in isolation rather than the start of anything, and any pattern of play, any pattern of victory, any consistency in victories.
00:15:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:15:52
Nick Britten
They've got to put, I don't think the pressure on Amarim will go away until he wins three or four games in a trot.
00:15:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. They've just not been able to do that, have they? Was his 50th game in charge of United yesterday?
00:16:00
Nick Britten
They haven't been able to win two in a trot, let alone three or four.
00:16:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can't remember. Well, I'm sure he did, but I can't remember three three victories on the bounce. I have no idea if he's done that. No.
00:16:12
Nick Britten
think of the Chelsea game a couple of weeks ago that they won.
00:16:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:16:14
Nick Britten
That didn't stop the pressure on him because they then went to Brentford and chucked in an absolutely wretched performance.
00:16:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
man no
00:16:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair
00:16:22
Nick Britten
So they've got a bit, it's a good starting point and was a good win. And hammering his due credit, his absolutely due credit because, know, we hammer him when he loses. And he pointed out in his pre-match press conference ahead of the weekend that when we win, nobody credits the system, but when we lose, everybody blames the system, which I think is a very fair point to make.
00:16:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah plan
00:16:39
Nick Britten
And so therefore we should credit his system, credit his team and say, well done to him and the players. But let's now go on and and take the next step because they have to do that. Otherwise, it'll just be back to square one in three or four weeks' time.
00:16:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Interesting. Good news for Amarim that they're going into an instant break with a win under the belt and a fairly convincing one as

Newcastle Victory and Forest's Managerial Pressure

00:17:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
well. That's going to settle the nerves a little bit. One swallow doesn't make us so much, as we know, but it did look a lot better.
00:17:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, talking about managers under intense pressure. Newcastle v Forest ah game today.
00:17:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Piles more pressure on hands. Great goal by Gainer Esch. But again, Forest seemed to be firing blanks. I know it kind of kicked off in the second half rather than the first half, but but what's sir what was your take on that game?
00:17:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because I know you're a keen Newcastle supporter.
00:17:34
Nick Britten
oh
00:17:36
Nick Britten
well um Well, I follow them. I follow them because my wife is a fanatical Newcastle supporter.
00:17:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
She is.
00:17:43
Nick Britten
So so yes, no, I want them i wantt always always want them to do well, obviously.
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
She is.
00:17:47
Nick Britten
And it was a fairly routine victory today. I didn't think much of Forrest, I must say.
00:17:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Are they getting worse?
00:17:55
Nick Britten
I didn't think much of them.
00:17:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're getting worse, aren't they?
00:17:58
Nick Britten
They just didn't really do much throughout the game. That was the thing. And when their big chance did come at 2-0 down to make it 2-1, Chris Wood fluffed his lines again.
00:18:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:10
Nick Britten
had a very good opportunity.
00:18:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's not having the greatest the season, does he?
00:18:11
Nick Britten
He's having a very good time.
00:18:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
He a great start, but he's not the player, is he, as he was?
00:18:15
Nick Britten
He looks devoid of confidence. I was quite surprised he's still starting games, to be honest I thought, Igor, he's a smart bit given a chance by now.
00:18:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:18:21
Nick Britten
But no, I didn't think... To honest, I was disappointed by Forrest. I didn't think... they were the I mean, they were competitive. They were in the game. They weren't awful.
00:18:32
Nick Britten
But they didn't really do much.
00:18:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
no no no it never really looked like getting back into it after winning 2-0 down i yeah you know it never really felt under threat
00:18:35
Nick Britten
And...
00:18:42
Nick Britten
ah don't think the no I don't even think they looked to get him back into even 1-0 down. I thought Newcastle were comfortably the better team. It was ah it was a fairly routine twoial victory.
00:18:52
Nick Britten
As you say, great goal from Bruno Giboraj.
00:18:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
great great finish
00:18:57
Nick Britten
Great penalty.
00:18:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
And great penalty.
00:18:59
Nick Britten
What a penalty that was.
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
You might say the same thing. What a great penalty, by the way, by Walter Marder.
00:19:03
Nick Britten
Yeah, that was quality. That was quality.
00:19:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's the best penalty I've seen in years.
00:19:07
Nick Britten
was ah I had to watch it three or four times because it kind of looks like an unusual... I'm wondering how he managed to get so much whip, height, pace and power in it.
00:19:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
but It was like a two-step up to the penalty spot, wasn't it?
00:19:17
Nick Britten
Yeah, but it hit the roof of the net before it hit the back of the net.
00:19:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
could have easily gone over It would have looked at the ball.
00:19:21
Nick Britten
Right, right in the top bin.
00:19:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it was it didn't. It went in. No goalkeeper. Two goalkeepers aren't saving that one.
00:19:29
Nick Britten
No, it was a fantastic penalty. and And I'm glad for him because it was otherwise a slightly frustrating. He missed a couple of chances that were not not easy, but certainly a presentable.
00:19:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i did.
00:19:40
Nick Britten
Certainly presentable.
00:19:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, Sells kept him in it, really. Sells had a de but very good game. Without Sells, it could have ended up four.
00:19:47
Nick Britten
Yeah, yeah, I know for sure. I thought it was it just a fairly comfortable way. But where does this leave Ange Possocoglu now? Six games in.
00:19:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
in a very, very precarious place, I suspect.
00:19:58
Nick Britten
Bit of a sticky wicket. Yeah, a bit of a sticky wicket. It'll be interesting to see what happens over there the yeah the coming sort of week or two. Obviously, he had the dreaded vote of confidence from his chairman before the weekend. They said they're not worried, they're giving him time, and I think they do need to give him time. I don't think it will do anybody any good if they sack him. I really don't.
00:20:13
Nick Britten
I think I need to give him time and at least until the new year and see what happens. Unless unless they they go on a massive losing streak. i mean, they're picking up the odd draw here on and they've got to start winning games. And obviously they're not at the right end of the table now, you know, 17th, one point and one place off the relegation zone. and But I just feel that sacking him now, what would that achieve?
00:20:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
i Well,
00:20:41
Nick Britten
What would that achieve? I mean, look when look at West Ham, right? Look at West Ham.
00:20:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah.
00:20:46
Nick Britten
You could sense that Graham Potter had been in there since January. Nothing had changed. He'd had January to May. He'd then had the preseason. He then had, what, four or five games.
00:20:59
Nick Britten
And West Ham looked no better than when he took over. And you can look at that pattern of play, ah look at that sorry, look at that pattern rather, and look at the way West Ham play and say, if he stays, we're going to get relegated.
00:21:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm
00:21:14
Nick Britten
I don't think that that is the case with Forrest. I don't think that's the case with Postacoglu. I think...
00:21:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
i'm not so sure. sure And I'm not sure sure we're going to get to the new year. Tell you why. I've just looked up as sir as we were talking there, the two games they've got in the rest of October. Obviously, we've got break now.
00:21:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
home against Chelsea, away at Bournemouth.
00:21:38
Nick Britten
Yeah, okay. So two difficult games. But every game in the Premier League is difficult game.
00:21:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah they'll they ah a They are more different than most.
00:21:42
Nick Britten
yeah You know, every game is a difficult game. and well Chelsea at home, I don't know.
00:21:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
and That isn't going to be followed by Fulham away, is it?
00:21:46
Nick Britten
I have no idea whether Chelsea at home is difficult game. Well, yeah I don't know whether Chelsea at home is a difficult game because you've got no idea which Chelsea is going to turn up. Bournemouth away is a very difficult game. Yeah, without without doubt.
00:21:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can see no points out of that.
00:21:59
Nick Britten
ah you Right, so you tell me what's you tell me then what is
00:22:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
can one point out it.
00:22:04
Nick Britten
what is the justification for sacking him now
00:22:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Two things, I think. um look um um I'm not advocating this, sacking but but if if I was Marinakis, I think you could make a case. Not now, but maybe by the end of October, if those neither of those two games are won, and I don't think either of them will be won.
00:22:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think you can make the case that he is not the right manager because he's very staid in terms of, he's very clear in terms of what his approach is, what his style is. He's just not the right manager or it's not the right style for the players that we have at our disposal.
00:22:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if we continue to try and play this this this style with these players, we're going to get into serious trouble. ah So I think you can make a case based on that.
00:22:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the other case you can make is that, you know, has he got the dressing room? Because at the moment, yesterday, actually a good example yesterday, you know, Ati Gimarese's goal, I think it was,
00:23:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah When Morgan Gibbs-White gets kind of knocked over and lies down and rolls around a bit, soft yeah it could be a foul, it would be the softest foul ever. But they i mean they moved there they're pushing forward, about to score the goal.
00:23:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Gibbs-White's just just you know rolling around a bit to get you know some credibility. It's the foul that's supposed to be committed. That ain't what you need. And I thought that was pretty unimpressive by Gibbs-White, to be honest.
00:23:40
Nick Britten
Yeah, and that's fair. And and I can see that. There's another argument, though, to be made, isn't there, that he's been specifically brought in by the chairman for the chairman's own reasons. And whilst he's trying to mould a...
00:23:56
Nick Britten
I don't know what the style of play is, by the way. mean, when I looked Forrest today, watched the whole game. It wasn't like Angus Tottenham team, where it's just attack, attack, attack. It was a little bit of nothingness, really, because they didn't defend that well they didn't attack that well.
00:24:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's very open at the back.
00:24:09
Nick Britten
they weren't But they were kind of in the game. They've got good players. They were they were in the game. They've got Anderson, he's a good player, although he did give away penalty. Gibbs-White's a decent player, but didn't really feature that much today.
00:24:22
Nick Britten
and mean, he had also had Ryan Yates in there, and I've no idea why that would be at all. I don't think he adds anything to a Nottingham Forest team. And there is an argument to say, well, look, in January, we we'll start this build, and in the summer, we'll carry on the build, and we'll get you the players you want, and we'll will play the way you want to play.
00:24:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, maybe. But I've got a feeling, in and we saw it last year when Leicester brought in your man from Man United, Mr Roy.
00:24:48
Nick Britten
Oh, Van Nistelrooy, yeah.
00:24:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sometimes people get appointed because they're available. Poster Cogli was appointed because he was available. And I don't think that's a very good reason to appoint someone, but I'm sure that's why he was appointed.
00:25:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And i don't think I think this is not going to work out. I think karma is going to come and bite Malinarchus on the knee.
00:25:14
Nick Britten
on On the very sizeable knee. Well, nobody in the world of football, I don't think, outside of the city ground would worry about Kama coming back and biting Maranakis wherever it does choose to bite him. I think you're probably doing Postal Cogler a slight disservice here when he was appointed because he's won stuff.
00:25:33
Nick Britten
Yeah, he's won stuff.
00:25:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:25:35
Nick Britten
Every club he's been to, he's won stuff.
00:25:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:36
Nick Britten
And he's also appointed because he's Greek. And Maranakis loves that about him. He loves the fact that there's a Greek manager doing so well in the Premier League. And he's made, you know, he loves, and for that, he presented him.
00:25:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's Turkish.
00:25:51
Nick Britten
But he's got Greek heritage.
00:25:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or maybe, but it's a Turkish. It's Turkish.
00:25:54
Nick Britten
He's got Greek heritage. He presented him with a trophy in the priest in in just after the end of the season as the first manager of Greek heritage to win European trophy. He loves him for it.
00:26:05
Nick Britten
He loves him for it. so
00:26:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
but That's it' a terrible reason to appoint someone.
00:26:07
Nick Britten
but Well, ah well whatever whatever his reasons are,
00:26:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nona Muscori's got Greek heritage. You're not going to put her in charge of a football team.
00:26:17
Nick Britten
maybe he might replace Chris Woodward, the way he's playing the moment.
00:26:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is true.
00:26:20
Nick Britten
the I'm trying to make the case here.
00:26:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
one No one on here will remember Nona Muscori, by the way.
00:26:22
Nick Britten
I'm trying to make the case. Look, if you take...
00:26:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because she was December in the nineteen sixty s
00:26:28
Nick Britten
Yeah. If you take Nuno and look at his trophy cabinet, and if you take Ange and look at his trophy cabinet, whose is the better by a mile?
00:26:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, maybe. Maybe. Maybe.
00:26:41
Nick Britten
I'm trying to make the case.
00:26:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Still, it ain't working out.
00:26:42
Nick Britten
I'm just trying to make the of his appointment and his continued appointment.
00:26:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
It ain't working out. It's not going to work. Right. Okay. Global Sports Podcast Network partnered with Bionique, the world's most personalized supplements, because your body, Marinakis' body, is unique.
00:26:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very unique. ah Because without knowing what deficiencies you have, taking off-the-shelf supplements mean you're probably not getting enough of the nutrients you need, maybe too many. of the ones you don't need. So Bionique very cleverly provide 100% tailor-made supplements designed to deliver precisely exactly what your body needs at exactly the right levels.

Everton vs Palace Highlights

00:28:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everton Palace.
00:28:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Palace's first defeat since the 16th of April. ah Watch the game. Palace, how they didn't win that game, I do not know. They should have been 4-0 up by about after an hour.
00:28:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But they went. ah they which they They were dominant. ah Very clumsy. Now, you don't often say this about the Palace's defence. But a very clumsy challenge ah by Lacroix allowed Everton to get the equaliser.
00:28:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then, guess who? Jack Grealish pops up off the bench and hu and know I'd like to talk about this. I thought it was an extraordinarily clever finish, but I'll get your view on that.
00:28:49
Nick Britten
Well, yeah, for a start, he wasn't off the bench. He's played the whole game.
00:28:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, big one.
00:28:54
Nick Britten
Yeah, it was a...
00:28:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did he? Did he?
00:28:56
Nick Britten
Yeah, he started...
00:28:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, oh, well, okay. Interesting. Because I thought, well, go on, go on.
00:29:03
Nick Britten
No, no. Right. Okay. let's Let's talk about this then. So yeah, Palace were undoubtedly the better team. Undoubtedly the better team for the first, certainly filled with 45 minutes. They took the lead and deserve to take the lead.
00:29:15
Nick Britten
A good goal. I like seeing Muniz get up and down a pitch. I think he's a very good wing back and he adds goals to to his game. He does score a few each season and it was a smart finish.
00:29:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:26
Nick Britten
And at that stage, you can only go and see one winner. I think the changing point in the game was at half-time, actually, when ah David Moyes bought on Alcaraz for Dibbling and bought on Beto for Barry.
00:29:38
Nick Britten
Not because Beto is not like a goal-scoring machine by any stretch imagination, but Alcaraz was a massive improvement on Dibbling and suddenly Everton were able to attack down that right-hand side, which they hadn't really done up until you know up until that change.
00:29:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:29:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:29:54
Nick Britten
They were quite insipid in the first half, to honest.
00:29:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, palace Palace looked really impressive, I thought.
00:29:59
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:29:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
There had so many opportunities. They should have been out sight.
00:30:00
Nick Britten
They did. They did. But they didn't take them.
00:30:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:30:05
Nick Britten
And you've to take them. And then Everton came back into the game. and the And the real turning point of the game, 76 minutes. ah Yeah. Just a foolish penalty. Just a foolish penalty.
00:30:16
Nick Britten
I think was Zendaya, wasn't it? Got caught. so Well, Lacroix caught.
00:30:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
He wasn't going anywhere. he was just kind of going down down the side of the penalty box. He was no threat. And just...
00:30:25
Nick Britten
I don't think it was a little bit like the penalty at Newcastle where Anderson takes a touch, doesn't see Gimaraas coming and then Gimaraas nicks the ball by which time Anderson's already into his movement and fails him.
00:30:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:30:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:30:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah, yeah.
00:30:39
Nick Britten
and I think it was one of those. I think Laquard didn't know where Ndiaye was.
00:30:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, similar, similar.
00:30:42
Nick Britten
and he was and he was then trying to pull out of it, he's he's but he's already sliding and just kind of slides into the back of him and just clips his heels and down he goes and it's penalty. No argument about that. Good penalty.
00:30:53
Nick Britten
No problem. And the winning goal was, well, you said it was a really clever finish.
00:30:59
Nick Britten
I'm sorry. and It wasn't a clever finish. It was Munos tried to clear It ah hit Grealish's foot and flew into the net.
00:30:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought it was a really clever finish.
00:31:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know. No, no, no, no. It didn't hit his foot. No, no, Grealish. And by the way, accept he did play all game. Grealish positioned his foot so any deflection of that would go straight in the goal.
00:31:15
Nick Britten
Thank you very much. That's
00:31:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it was very clever.
00:31:20
Nick Britten
absolutely rubbish.
00:31:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
No. No.
00:31:22
Nick Britten
Rubbish.
00:31:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
you You need to do some homework tonight. Rewatch that 100
00:31:27
Nick Britten
I've watched it loads. he's stuck and I'm not saying it just he's put his foot out.
00:31:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Grealish knew what he was doing.
00:31:31
Nick Britten
No, he's put his foot out to make the block, to make the tackle. That ball could have gone anywhere, as it was.
00:31:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no, no, no, no.
00:31:37
Nick Britten
you own Because he was about five yards out goal, it was flown into the back of the net. But don't tell me he meant that.
00:31:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
He meant that.
00:31:42
Nick Britten
You didn't. You're just making this stuff.
00:31:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
He meant that.
00:31:44
Nick Britten
You're just making this up real. You're talking absolute rubbish.
00:31:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah hi um I am Grealish's greatest critic, but I'm telling you, he meant to that.
00:31:49
Nick Britten
and I know you.
00:31:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
He meant to do that.
00:31:50
Nick Britten
No, we didn't.
00:31:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And i when I saw it, I thought, hats off, Jack.
00:31:55
Nick Britten
did you see that Did you see his interview after the game?
00:31:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hats off. No.
00:31:58
Nick Britten
Right. So I suggest to you, because I now and because i know what I'm talking about, I suggest to you, you go and look at that interview, do your homework, go and look at that interview, and then come back tomorrow and tell me who's right out of you and me. Because the answer is me.
00:32:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no, no. If he said it was an accident, he's just been modest.
00:32:15
Nick Britten
He didn't say accident, neither did he say, oh yeah, I met my girl.
00:32:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
now Anyway, day one, two, one. Jack Grealish's Amazing season continues. skips Keeps popping up with these these key goals, these key contributions.
00:32:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah And thank God, because I've got him on my fantasy team. So, oh, yeah.
00:32:34
Nick Britten
Oh, no. Have you?
00:32:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. ah So very pleased about that.
00:32:40
Nick Britten
It's disappointing.
00:32:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So anyway, so so so that's been that's been game week seven, as they say ah in modern football ah of the Premier League.
00:32:41
Nick Britten
Disappointing.
00:32:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
We... and And we're now into an international break, which gives us a chance to reflect on many things.
00:32:56
Nick Britten
Thank you.
00:32:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But i think we'd all agree it's one of the more intriguing starts to a Premier League than we've seen

Premier League Standings Discussion

00:33:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
for quite some time. Would you agree with that, Nick?
00:33:09
Nick Britten
100%. It's been a very good start. It's it's great. It's great. And we've covered the teams that are perhaps exceeding expectations. I'm goingnna um going to ask you a question then. If we were to have this conversation August ahead of the start the season and say to you, right, Ken, at the second international break going into October, the bottom three are going to be Burnley, West Ham and Wolves.
00:33:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
got
00:33:30
Nick Britten
Would that come as a big surprise to you?
00:33:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:33:33
Nick Britten
Okay. Why? Why?
00:33:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because I would have expected Brentford to be down there because they had such a loss of personnel and manager. I would have expected, to be fair, I would have expected Sunderland to be down there.
00:33:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:33:51
Nick Britten
Oh, right. Okay. Well, I predicted ah predicted West Ham, Burnley and Brentford to go down.
00:33:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:33:59
Nick Britten
Or actually, no, did I choose Leeds in the end over West Ham?
00:33:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. think I think, yeah, and of course. Yeah. i mean
00:34:03
Nick Britten
I can't remember. I can't remember. Anyway, yeah. All right. Well, I mean, Brentford asked...
00:34:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I expected Man United to have a better season. I expected Liverpool to be much better because I think they're not very good, actually. I expected Liverpool to be much better. I didn't expect Arsenal to be as good as they are.
00:34:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah There's loads still. I expected...
00:34:24
Nick Britten
And then we've got Bournemouth to throw into it' got Palace throw into it
00:34:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. it's It's absolutely fascinating.
00:34:28
Nick Britten
Sunderland throw into it. That's a good start.
00:34:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
fascinating I think we're heading, i'm reading something like this, about this earlier today, um I think it we're heading for one of the classic Premier League seasons. and And guess what? You can follow it every single day on the Daily Premier League podcast.
