Introduction and Context

00:00:15
ElRanchoVasquez
Thank you.
00:00:23
Kyle Richardson
All right. We're working at eight o'clock on a Monday night on the East coast. Nate is 30 minutes late, but I'll give him a break. He's on vacation and we're go to squeeze this one in.
00:00:36
Kyle Richardson
So I just emailed a link to the one and only Kevin Vasquez. So we got him instead tonight, ladies and gentlemen.

Kevin's Morning Routine

00:00:44
ElRanchoVasquez
who's still working because it's five o'clock over here on the West Coast.
00:00:48
Kyle Richardson
Okay. First of all, Kevin, Knowing you, you didn't wake up till 6 45 this morning.
00:00:56
ElRanchoVasquez
I can neither confirm nor deny that, but I'll probably confirm that.
00:00:59
Kyle Richardson
And then you probably went to the coffee shop.
00:01:03
Kyle Richardson
Enrolled into work around I know what your goal is.
00:01:06
ElRanchoVasquez
You're close. It was more like 945, but, you know, give you a little bit here there.
00:01:12
Kyle Richardson
You got to get there after everyone leaves and then you don't have to deal with like the morning BS.
00:01:18
ElRanchoVasquez
Exactly right. or The morning BS is already dealt with. I just get to kind of shoot on in and do my thing for the rest of the day.
00:01:25
Kyle Richardson
Yeah. Everyone else has already dealt with the problems of the morning. You just get to hear.
00:01:30
ElRanchoVasquez
biggest question The biggest question at that point is what's for lunch?
00:01:33
Kyle Richardson
yeah Well, I obviously, obviously that's your biggest concern.

Dealing with Utility Challenges at Events

00:01:40
ElRanchoVasquez
What's going on on the East Coast besides the heat wave?
00:01:43
Kyle Richardson
it's hot. It's fair season in New Jersey. I've been blessed enough that I hit a waterline on Friday. at a fairgrounds that they didn't mark going to a hydrant and they dug it up today, fixed when I hit Friday, turned the water back on.
00:02:00
Kyle Richardson
Uh, turns out I hit the line four times. So that was, uh, they weren't really happy with me, but I will say every shot was dead on perfect.
00:02:11
Kyle Richardson
That line.
00:02:12
ElRanchoVasquez
Of course it was. And was that on a, was that a stake line of the, of a pole tent?
00:02:17
Kyle Richardson
Yep, right on an 80 wide. So it's like 40 feet long section where the hydrant comes in. It's on them. If they don't want me to hit their water lines, they got to mark them.
00:02:28
Kyle Richardson
I have no clue where they are.
00:02:29
ElRanchoVasquez
yeah
00:02:30
Kyle Richardson
But they just told me to avoid hitting them anymore. They refuse to mark any of the lines. So I will try not to hit them again, but we'll see what happens.
00:02:39
ElRanchoVasquez
yeah that's that's the tough part about working at those county fairs the fairgrounds whatever it is is that sometimes they just are like yeah man uh you know just don't try and hit anything and you ask them to mark everything and they'll walk around with you but you're in
00:02:51
Kyle Richardson
Yeah.
00:02:54
ElRanchoVasquez
you better spray paint down or do something to just kind of have a good idea where things are at.
00:02:59
Kyle Richardson
the The guy gave me the I think it's over here, but I'm really not sure. Like, well, that doesn't really help me.
00:03:08
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah, right? Yeah, I mean, we did the same thing. We just did a county fair last week, and it was kind of like that, where we didn't hit anything, but they were just, yeah, I don't think there's anything there. oh there may be something there. It was kind of a guessing game, but that's that's part of what we got to do.
00:03:25
Kyle Richardson
Yeah, we've been doing this job since 2017. And the guy said, we've hit a waterline at the park every year, but one.
00:03:29
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah.
00:03:34
Kyle Richardson
So I think next year, we're just going to hire the private utility markout company and pass the cost onto the customer and say, all right, find all of the lines and we'll just mark them somehow or do a map.
00:03:47
Kyle Richardson
So we know where they are for the future, but it's always entertaining.
00:03:49
ElRanchoVasquez
yeah No, man, doing a private utility marker definitely has its benefits. We got an air show we're doing that's about a six-hour drive away from us, still in the same state, but very far off the coast.
00:04:02
ElRanchoVasquez
And we're doing a private utility marker at this airport because they kind of know, but at least we know. And we did it last year.
00:04:08
Kyle Richardson
Yeah. Well,
00:04:10
ElRanchoVasquez
And people usually ask, you know, why do you do it every single year? And it's because if you look and see utility companies with those big wheels, spools of cables on it, They're going underground and you don't know which route or where they're going.
00:04:22
Kyle Richardson
yeah
00:04:22
ElRanchoVasquez
So something that wasn't there last year could be there this year. You know you just never know. But at the end of day, water lines are probably the best thing to hit if you're going to hit something.
00:04:27
Kyle Richardson
well
00:04:32
ElRanchoVasquez
It's everything else that it really has a horrible implication on it after it's done.
00:04:37
Kyle Richardson
The head guy from the park came out and started yelling at me a little bit and I kind of yelled back, but whatever. He was like, did you not call mark out in?
00:04:44
ElRanchoVasquez
yeah
00:04:46
Kyle Richardson
And then I had to you know educate him that, yeah, if you look at the road, they marked the 10 feet into where the meter box is in the ground and that's where they stopped. That's all they're going to mark for you, sir.
00:04:57
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah.
00:04:57
Kyle Richardson
Everything else is on you. You're in charge of this park.
00:05:00
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah, totally. you Yeah. And I mean, some of the fairgrounds we've been doing a lot of work at, we work with their grounds guys and, you know, we'll call them before we stake a whole area. They'll walk out and say, you know, oh, if you move it over a foot, going clear everything or whatever it may be.
00:05:13
ElRanchoVasquez
So
00:05:14
Kyle Richardson
But most of the time, those guys are guessing as well.
00:05:16
ElRanchoVasquez
yeah. Right. It's always a guessing game, right? The earth moves, things, things shift a little bit.
00:05:20
Kyle Richardson
Yeah.
00:05:21
ElRanchoVasquez
You never know.
00:05:24
Kyle Richardson
How's California?
00:05:26
ElRanchoVasquez
It's good. I mean, we don't got a heat wave, you know, it all went to you guys. We got, you know, we're in the seventies, eighties right now, little bit of a breeze here and there, but it's, it's clear and nice.
00:05:36
ElRanchoVasquez
There isn't any fires by me right now up in Northern California, but yeah, it's pretty interesting. We just got ah call about, I don't know, think it made national news.
00:05:46
ElRanchoVasquez
There was a fireworks company that was local to us that caught fire and exploded and, um,
00:05:52
Kyle Richardson
Yeah.
00:05:54
ElRanchoVasquez
they contacted us to help cover some areas as they sift through and work on it and do all that. So that just came in today. So, you know, some weird firework that came in, but yeah, no, everything else has been kind of cruising along.
00:06:02
Kyle Richardson
Nice.
00:06:07
ElRanchoVasquez
Can't, can't complain. Things are happening.
00:06:10
Kyle Richardson
Is this this is slow season for you, right?
00:06:13
ElRanchoVasquez
It's kind of a

Efficient Scheduling During Fair Season

00:06:14
ElRanchoVasquez
weird, like, Busy peak, you know, we have about two to three weeks between July and August that are pretty busy. And then it tends to tone, come down a little bit into September. And then, you know, once the middle September hits, it's game on until November.
00:06:30
Kyle Richardson
Yeah. Until you go to that mattress show.
00:06:32
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah. Yeah, right. Yeah. Usually it's like we're finishing up stuff and I'm packing and getting on a plane to go to Matra for about a week. And how about you guys? Are you guys, you guys are doing fairs and all that right now?
00:06:44
Kyle Richardson
Yeah, so it's fair season for us. So it's fairly low key. We work, the fair schedule is five to five, Monday through Thursday. So the guys come in at 5am, punch out at 5pm, and they get a nice three day weekend.
00:06:54
ElRanchoVasquez
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:06:59
Kyle Richardson
So they still get their overtime, which they're happy about. um And we've just realized that it's a lot more efficient to work the longer days. And there's no guess it was a deadline to get the job done, but you have multiple days to get it done. So you don't have to rush.
00:07:16
Kyle Richardson
And we're able to give the guys some time off on the weekends, uh, mainly because I want the time off, but
00:07:23
ElRanchoVasquez
Well, also you can kind of plan it out too, and you can go, oh, I can hit this day a little harder than this other day and wrap up this day or, you know, keep a couple people back to load in the warehouse or whatever it may be.
00:07:28
Kyle Richardson
yeah.
00:07:33
ElRanchoVasquez
So
00:07:34
Kyle Richardson
Well, the closest one is 30 minutes away. The farthest one's an hour and 15, but you know, you save so much time. You save the farthest one, you save two and a half hours of drive time if you don't have to go back one more day.
00:07:50
Kyle Richardson
So if you work on site for 10 and a half hours, instead of an eight hour day, you get more done and you're actually saving money.
00:07:50
ElRanchoVasquez
yeah. Right.
00:07:57
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah. Yeah. and I don't know how it is. I know on the East coast, there's a lot of ways to get around certain places or certain freeways, highways, but over here in Northern California, there's only so many freeways we can take.
00:08:11
ElRanchoVasquez
So sometimes it's beneficial for us to stay later and work one more, you know, a couple hours more for them to just be able to come home, you know, with less traffic or whatever it may be.
00:08:19
Kyle Richardson
Yeah.
00:08:21
ElRanchoVasquez
Mm-hmm.
00:08:22
Kyle Richardson
Yeah. Well, that's yeah. In the mornings we definitely beat the traffic, which is always nice. And I don't know, I kind of find it relaxing to be out working at six in the morning in a big open field at a fairgrounds.
00:08:36
ElRanchoVasquez
Can't beat that, just spraying some lines and driving some steaks.
00:08:38
Kyle Richardson
Yeah. I'm usually marking out tents. So it's just nice and peaceful minus the wet boots. I will say that that's every morning.
00:08:46
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah, it doesn't matter what it is. It doesn't matter if it's a super hot day. It's going to be wet and muggy on that first few hours of the morning.
00:08:55
Kyle Richardson
Yeah. So we're halfway through 25, Kevin. Are
00:08:58
ElRanchoVasquez
That's insane. That is just a um unreal.
00:09:01
Kyle Richardson
you thinking about 26 yet?

Planning for Future Inventory and Events

00:09:04
ElRanchoVasquez
Stephen Russell, C.D.: : starting to about it, seeing you know we picked up two more vehicles this year so it's looking and seeing if we need to add to our fleet next year as far as adding to the fleet itself or adding some more vehicles for leads or supervisors and seeing how that is going play out.
00:09:23
ElRanchoVasquez
um And then kind of seeing what we were short this year and what we may need next year. um seems like frame has been okay. It's the vinyl that we're getting a little tight on, but we're making it work for 25 so that way we can do some decent purchases in 26. How about you?
00:09:41
Kyle Richardson
I think it's just going to be like utility purchases. So just, you know, replace some older vinyl, add a little bit more of just stuff we need. We keep a running tab of like, hey, we were short or close on X product. And then usually right before show season starts, we go in, we pull up the list and we go, okay, this is what we need to order for next season.
00:10:07
Kyle Richardson
No big purchases. Obviously we bought a garden tent this year, so that eats up a lot of big purchase money. But I think we're going to end up having to buy some more P1 30 meter.
00:10:19
Kyle Richardson
just We got a ton of quotes out for next June for it. So it's either that or hopefully Nate's going to bail me out if I end up needing it.
00:10:26
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah. Yeah. That is nice about having some friends in the industry is being able to lean on them for, you know, some sub rentals. So that way you're not, dishing out a whole bunch of capital to get get that product. Although it's nice to have the product and have it on your shelf and ready to go whenever, but sometimes it just doesn't pencil out and it's, you know, that makes sense, you know, and i think, you know, looking at and seeing what the deals are, of course, from the vendors always during show season is helpful. But sometimes it's almost like, what what do you really need and what really goes?
00:11:02
Kyle Richardson
Speak of the devil. I'll call him out right on there. You know, 8, 820.
00:11:04
ElRanchoVasquez
Oh, yeah, here we go.
00:11:05
Kyle Richardson
He's calling me.
00:11:05
ElRanchoVasquez
Nate's calling, yeah.
00:11:09
ElRanchoVasquez
Sorry, Nate.
00:11:10
Kyle Richardson
Yeah, he's fired.
00:11:12
ElRanchoVasquez
He's hired for this week. and
00:11:14
Kyle Richardson
Yeah, this week.
00:11:16
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah, so, you know, looking at stuff like 26 is that you just, one of the things I do is, like you said, keep but keep a list of what you've run short on, what you're tied on, and also, it's that time that when you're looking at purchases, oh, do I change this style of tent, you know, do I buy more gable ends instead of hip ends, or you know, should I get something fun like an, an, an Arkham or, you know, a garden tent, you know, what, what's, what's the next things that can work out or should you buy, you know, these many mids for your sailcloth tent so you can do a little bit more.
00:11:49
ElRanchoVasquez
So, um, that's good.
00:11:50
Kyle Richardson
I got a buy a sale cup. Oh my God.
00:11:52
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah.
00:11:58
Kyle Richardson
I hate to say, but it's kind of like, we do really try our best to, you know, take it down. ah usually have a guy in a pickup truck sitting there, roll it up, put it in the truck, send it back to the warehouse right away.
00:12:11
Kyle Richardson
You hung up, but like you still only get four or five years out of it really.
00:12:17
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah, it's such of a thinner translucent product that, yeah, i need any kind of little thing.
00:12:22
Kyle Richardson
It's so tough. Well, I just saw recently now the Facebook world saying don't wash it.
00:12:30
ElRanchoVasquez
I've been hearing that too. I saw that too. so how are you supposed to clean it? You know, is there, now there's been so many years that it's been out. So has there been some more research behind it? Is there,
00:12:41
ElRanchoVasquez
You know, what what's the thought process?
00:12:41
Kyle Richardson
Yeah. i like <unk> Steve, if you're listening, I'd like to know if you have any i thoughts on this. Obviously you sell washers, but maybe you know something we don't.
00:12:51
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah. I mean, because it seems like, you know, maybe maybe because of the the the material that it is, it's it gets a little bit more beat up and it shows a little bit more than, you know, coated vinyl or something like that.
00:13:03
Kyle Richardson
Like we, if we will, we usually rinse it. So we'll just put it in for a rinse cycle real quick for like 10 minutes, 15 minutes max.
00:13:09
ElRanchoVasquez
Mm-hmm.
00:13:12
Kyle Richardson
I think it's set to, and then hang it back up. But now they're saying don't do that at all because the water gets in the vinyl.
00:13:20
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah, so that's interesting. That'd be an interesting topic to, you know, bring someone on and talk about or even see what Tico Steve has to say about it.
00:13:27
Kyle Richardson
Yeah.
00:13:29
Kyle Richardson
Cause I mean, there is, it is true. A piece of new soap looks beautiful, but once you get the, I believe the proper terminology is crazy in there.
00:13:38
ElRanchoVasquez
Oh,
00:13:39
Kyle Richardson
It looks like little scratch marks.
00:13:41
ElRanchoVasquez
yes, yes, I know what you're talking about Yeah.
00:13:43
Kyle Richardson
So, but what does that come from?
00:13:49
ElRanchoVasquez
Mm hmm.
00:13:50
Kyle Richardson
How do we stop that? Is it possible?
00:13:52
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah.
00:13:53
Kyle Richardson
So,
00:13:53
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah. Is it from, you know, the the rubbing of, ah you know, some of the metal pieces onto the vinyl itself or, you know, whatever that may be. so It seems like it's not like a ah piece of white vinyl that it starts to degrade, but not enough to where you start noticing it, like as far as customers may not fully, but we totally do.
00:14:13
ElRanchoVasquez
And we can tell, oh, no, this has got to go out to a fair over a wedding, you know, and that's where we go and do those things.
00:14:19
Kyle Richardson
Yeah.
00:14:21
ElRanchoVasquez
Luckily for us, we have some long-term rentals that happen in the wintertime into the spring. And that's where some of our vinyl ends up going to live out its last lives. all kinds of crazy colors but but they don't matter it doesn't matter they just want something covering themselves
00:14:36
Kyle Richardson
I've got one we do in Philadelphia for like the whole summer season and it's labeled Philadelphia cause it has that dirty Philadelphia air like that you We washed it like for seven cycles once to try to get it out.
00:14:49
Kyle Richardson
It is just like got this brown tinge to it. You cannot get it out. That filthy Philadelphia gets in there.
00:14:54
ElRanchoVasquez
it's a philly thing it's a philly thing
00:14:56
Kyle Richardson
Yeah, exactly. So,

Scaling a Business from $1M to $5M

00:15:00
ElRanchoVasquez
so
00:15:01
Kyle Richardson
all right.
00:15:02
Kyle Richardson
I was just perusing the Facebook world. And the question of the day is how do you scale from 1 million up to 3 to 5 million?
00:15:16
Kyle Richardson
And I was kind of shocked by the answers that were in there.
00:15:16
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah.
00:15:19
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah, I didn't get a good look at the answers, but I guess we can kind of do our own and kind of talk about that. Do you want to go first you want me to discuss it little bit?
00:15:29
Kyle Richardson
So a lot of the answers do make sense. It was like Adam Beaudry said it, grip it, and rip it, meaning just like, you just got to work your ass off. ah And the guy responded back to him was like, well, doesn't that lead to burnout?
00:15:43
Kyle Richardson
And he, Adam was honest. He's like, yes, but I think if you talk to any owner who's done it, they will tell you they burned out.
00:15:46
ElRanchoVasquez
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:15:51
Kyle Richardson
But it's a matter of burning out at the right time. um I think a lot of it is people and not a lot of people said that. I think people might focus too much on buying inventory or and hitting a revenue number.
00:16:08
Kyle Richardson
But at the end of the day, I don't think any of that matters.
00:16:12
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah, because you got to have the staff and the crew to support what you can do out there in in the in your in your area or wherever you're working at.
00:16:23
Kyle Richardson
Yeah.
00:16:23
ElRanchoVasquez
So, you know, with staffing comes, you know, more staffing, some headaches. So do you then, you know, really focus in on a core group of people?
00:16:34
ElRanchoVasquez
That's kind of what I know you've done and what I've done in the last couple of years, instead of throwing warm bodies
00:16:43
ElRanchoVasquez
people up so that they can handle not only some leadership roles, but also making them understand that working in a smaller group, we're going to be able to achieve the same thing, you know?
00:16:54
Kyle Richardson
Yeah. and I like to think of it kind of like a bow and arrow where you might have to pull back and build the team. And then much like a bow and arrow, you release that arrow and that's your trajectory forward.
00:17:10
ElRanchoVasquez
yeah
00:17:12
Kyle Richardson
So I think a lot of it is you have to get the right people in the right places because at a million dollars, you can do a lot as the owner.
00:17:19
ElRanchoVasquez
I mean, yeah. yeah
00:17:25
Kyle Richardson
you wear a lot of hats at $3 million. dollars You can wear a little less hats at 5 million. You cannot wear a lot of hats. You need to have people wearing hats for you.
00:17:37
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah, you need to, um, and one of the famous quotes is you need to either work in your business or on your business. And I think that's what changes into that, tra that, that, like you're saying that trajectory that let's say three to five, or even just the five mark itself.
00:17:43
Kyle Richardson
Yeah.

Building the Right Team for Growth

00:17:52
ElRanchoVasquez
Um, you're not working on your business. You're not necessarily working in it. You're not, you're not running, you know, driving an impact gun on a structure. You're not pounding in stakes with a sledgehammer. You're now.
00:18:05
ElRanchoVasquez
Delegating and talking to future customers and, you know, training and showing people how to do things and all that.
00:18:10
Kyle Richardson
Yeah, you might put up two tenths a year
00:18:14
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah. Right. You know, um, it's kind of those things. So think personnel, like you're saying is, and it's finding the right personnel and that's not always going to happen right away, you know, um,
00:18:25
ElRanchoVasquez
It was pretty interesting. We just had ah somebody apply for an admin assistant role. I looked more into his background and he has a little bit more of inventory and some logistics and vehicle maintenance and all that. And I was like, well, I wasn't really hiring for the operations side, but maybe you come over here and you can help support us and and and carry that on.
00:18:49
ElRanchoVasquez
especially in the state I live in loves to have so many regulations when it comes to vehicles that there's so many different things that have to happen. And so if I can alleviate some other pressure off some people, they can get their job done more efficient and they can do that.
00:18:56
Kyle Richardson
yeah
00:19:03
ElRanchoVasquez
So sometimes it's a leap of faith. Sometimes it's like something drops in your hand and you you run with it and see what happens.
00:19:10
Kyle Richardson
another thing is i think another good way to grow is you have to grow with your customers so if you have a really good customer base you know they're obviously gonna want more and more. that's been a big thing for us.
00:19:25
Kyle Richardson
We've grown with our customers they've kind of helped us grow and by helped us grow, they requested something. And instead of us saying no, we figured out how we can get what they want.
00:19:38
ElRanchoVasquez
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:19:38
Kyle Richardson
Um, and it, it might be, we bought the product or we sub rented the product, but it got us into the product and then we had it. So that's another way.
00:19:49
Kyle Richardson
Does that mean you should say yes to every job? No.

But another good way to grow is if you have good customers that are coming back and returning and they want to slowly start adding things or someone even said this, like go to your customers event the day of and do a check in on your 10, you want to make sure everything's good.
00:20:10
Kyle Richardson
And this isn't your wedding. This was probably more your corporate commercial client, but just see what else they rented from other vendors.
00:20:12
ElRanchoVasquez
Thank you.
00:20:18
Kyle Richardson
for that event and go, well, wait a minute, I don't carry a restroom trailer, but they rented one. Well, maybe I should look into adding that. Cause you know, that's another, depending on the size, 2,500 $5,000 of revenue that I could have just picked up off this project or, oh, they brought in a lighting company.
00:20:36
Kyle Richardson
Well, what if I managed the whole project for them and said, you know what, I'll bring the lighting company onto my and I'll add 10, 15%. ten fifteen percent
00:20:45
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah.
00:20:46
Kyle Richardson
And now you've created a good relationship with the lighting company and they're recommending you and they're helping you grow.
00:20:54
ElRanchoVasquez
yeah Yeah, definitely. That's that that's a little ah you know what word of mouth marketing and those kind of things instead of getting out there on billboards and Instagram ads and all those kind of things. those are Those are kind of you know a little upfront and inexpensive ways to do that and to market yourself and to get out there and do all that.
00:21:14
Kyle Richardson
and someone I guess that's better marketing than paid marketing.
00:21:16
ElRanchoVasquez
Oh, totally. Yeah, sometimes it is. You know, kind of thinking of what else like to look at scaling and what that could be is going and seeing, you know, for years, I dreamt of a semi, one day we're going to get there.
00:21:31
ElRanchoVasquez
and went to Tommy Wilson's place all occasions in Ohio, wrote in his truck, said, okay, this could work, I could see this. But I had to prove the facts of how we could benefit off that. So I looked at our brokerage prices that we paid and in twenty three And it justified, okay, let's say I spent in broker fees.
00:21:52
ElRanchoVasquez
The semi and the trailer $85,000, $90,000 out the door. So I'm already saving on that end, and now I have it in-house. And now I can charge the customer and get that full price instead of asking the broker how much, then going over it, and then trying to do all that.
00:22:09
ElRanchoVasquez
Now can do it in-house. But then I can also, we're talking about customers and helping them out. Now I can give the customer a better rate for a semi load and all that.
00:22:17
Kyle Richardson
Why would we want to do that, Kevin? More money.
00:22:20
ElRanchoVasquez
I know, right. You just never know. I mean, it's sometimes it works out, man. It's just, you know, it's that, it's that like fine relationships and keeping those going and all that so yeah like you can look at your books and see where how did i where did i spend my money at
00:22:37
ElRanchoVasquez
team 2015 we looked and saw every job that could we could use it on and we had to justify spending this much capital on this product what where could it go and it was well over 50 of the job so sure let's get it and then the second one came along and then the third and you know just keeps going
00:22:52
Kyle Richardson
Damn.
00:22:54
Kyle Richardson
I wish we could go back to 2016 ox pricing.
00:22:58
ElRanchoVasquez
know right yeah that 528 would have been 755 right away
00:23:00
Kyle Richardson
the
00:23:03
Kyle Richardson
The good old days.
00:23:05
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah. So, you know, it's scaling is just, I think just looking and seeing what you have going on and you know what your inventory is, is your, are you still doing, you know, 30 wide frame tents that you have to lace up and is that taking time instead of doing some heater stuff that are little bit quicker, a little bit easier to put up, you know, it's, it's really looking at those and yeah, it's all aspects of staffing, it's inventory, it's vehicles, it's,
00:23:35
ElRanchoVasquez
flatbeds or is it time to just spend the money and have a little bit of a payment to have your own?
00:23:40
Kyle Richardson
You know what ah we're gonna end with Kevin? Cause we're wrapping up
00:23:43
ElRanchoVasquez
What are we going to end
00:23:45
Kyle Richardson
Bigger's not better.
00:23:47
ElRanchoVasquez
with? bigger is not better.
00:23:49
Kyle Richardson
That's a misconception everyone who's listening. If you are doing a million dollars and you're making money,
00:23:57
Kyle Richardson
I might argue with you that you are not gonna make the same amount of money if you're doing 300 or $3 million. or three million dollars
00:24:04
ElRanchoVasquez
I believe it was Biggie Smalls who said, mow money, Mo problems. And so that's what comes down to it.
00:24:10
Kyle Richardson
Yeah, exactly.
00:24:13
ElRanchoVasquez
So just because you're this big, huge number in this big, huge place doesn't mean all the problems get

Challenges in Managing People

00:24:20
ElRanchoVasquez
solved. You can't throw money at it at a situation. You can't throw people at a situation.
00:24:23
ElRanchoVasquez
You got to build it and make it work as efficient as you can.
00:24:27
Kyle Richardson
I am envious of you guys who might have one crew running. You only have to worry about four people, five people. I envy you sometimes. I wish I was you.
00:24:38
ElRanchoVasquez
Me and Kyle often text that our favorite day is driving the semi to the site and back and loading up blocks or loading up frame. We love that so much.
00:24:46
Kyle Richardson
Yeah.
00:24:48
Kyle Richardson
Managing people is the worst part of the job, but.
00:24:52
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah, no, that's a good that's a good note to end off with. Yeah, just, you know, if you're worried about growing, talk to people around you. Talk, use these Facebook groups. You know, don't automatically pull the first answer, or whatever it may be.
00:25:04
ElRanchoVasquez
Just kind of get an average and see where everybody kind of is at and make your own decision

Final Thoughts on Business Growth

00:25:09
ElRanchoVasquez
and do what you're going do.
00:25:09
Kyle Richardson
And what worked for Kevin might not work for me and it might not work for you.
00:25:10
ElRanchoVasquez
Mm-hmm.
00:25:13
Kyle Richardson
So there's just.
00:25:17
Kyle Richardson
Don't rush it.
00:25:18
ElRanchoVasquez
Yeah, you don't need to rush. Just ease into it. And sometimes, you know, like I said, leaps of faith and making decisions, you're making a decision because you never, whatever you think that other part of the decision is going to be that you go, well, what if I would have done it? The what ifs are going to kill you.
00:25:34
Kyle Richardson
Yep.
00:25:35
ElRanchoVasquez
You need to just jump in and do it and roll with it. And if it's a bad decision, just got to roll with it. It's part of life and we learn from it. We keep going.
00:25:43
Kyle Richardson
Yep. All right. That's another tailgate talk. We're out of here.
00:25:47
ElRanchoVasquez
We're out here. Have a good one, guys.
