Speaker: Hello everyone and welcome back to another episode of the Certified Jarvis Podcast. I am, as always, Steven Jarvis and with me, as always, is the one, the only... Alyssa Jarvis.
Speaker: And today we are talking about the complete shenanigans, you know, and also maybe pistol-whipping Farva with his shenanigans because they're they're not cool shenanigans, they're evil shenanigans.
Speaker: We are talking about the cult classic, very first Super Troopers movie. Alyssa, what were your thoughts on Super Troopers of the movie?
Speaker: oh At first I wasn't quite sure what I would think about it because it was like the first stoner type movie that i ever watched.
Speaker: Um,
Speaker: So I wasn't quite sure what to think of it at first.
Speaker: But as I actually started to watch the movie, the more I actually kind of enjoyed it. it It's got like every stoner movie, really stupid humor to it.
Speaker: and
Speaker: And the way they did it just, it worked.
Speaker: Yeah, I mean, you know, it was it was one of those movies that kind of held on to the stoner genre of movies where it was like... You knew it was going to be that stupid broken lizards comedy.
Speaker: I mean, you know, they did it in every one of their movies. They did it with... ah Club Dread. They did it with Beer Fest. And now that ah in August of this year, August 7th, we're getting a Super Troopers 3.
Speaker: Like, it still shows that the franchise has staying power. I mean, granted, it it was a long time wait for two.
Speaker: But I mean, at the same time, you know, it's it's not like every Hollywood studio was like, oh, hey, give us Super Troopers 2. You know, so when Super Troopers, the very first one comes out, I think it was literally...
Speaker: herping back to like the old movies in the 90s with like Pauly Shore or, you know, Stephen Baldwin when it was the stupid stoner type movie like Son-in-Law, like Encino Man.
Speaker: um Biodome, all those movies that kind of had hit their stride in the 90s, but yet weren't going to be ones that were going to be like, oh, hey, you know, we need to make sequels on these.
Speaker: You know, it was a very much one and done movie, in my opinion. But then when we heard that they're making a sequel and when we got Super Troopers 2, I wasn't mad about it. I thought the first one deserved a sequel. Granted, I don't think we should have waited, what,
Speaker: um I think it was... So Super Troopers 1 was, I do believe...
Speaker: So Super Troopers was... The very first movie was 2001. And Super Troopers 2 came out 2018. and super troopers two came out in twenty eighteen That's years.
Speaker: and now we've waited eight more years just to get the third movie. So like, I think what had happened is that 2001 comes, we get the first movie, and then we had to wait 17 years for the second one. that That'd be like Halloween, literally doing the first movie. And then, you know, 2018, Halloween two comes out, you know?
Speaker: But I mean, from the very beginning of this movie, it it's funnier than shit. Like it really is. i think this movie literally leaned on what Broken Lizard could do and just put it up to 10.
Speaker: Right. in
Speaker: Anything else?
Speaker: when you first watched it, Do you think that the movie told you exactly what kind of movie it was going to be from the opening scene? Or do you think they left that more open?
Speaker: I think they left it more open because, I mean, when you... You you have to realize in 2001, like, it you saw a movie called Super Troopers, you automatically thought it was going to be a movie...
Speaker: about cops you didn't know if it was a comedy you didn't know if it was a a thriller or whatnot i mean you look at the thing and it's like you you look at the poster for it granted in 2001 i'm probably i'm in third grade so i'm probably about 10 11 years old so i mean it's it's not like you're looking at it and going like oh you know that's a comedy i already know it's gonna be stupid stoner humor you didn't know that like that's basically what happened.
Speaker: I mean, and like, not to harp away from the movie, but like scary movie. When that one came out, you knew it was going to be a parody film on Scream and all that.
Speaker: Where with this movie, you didn't know where it was going. You just knew the title, Super Troopers. And in the very beginning of the movie, when they stopped the three guys in the vehicle,
Speaker: that are stoners and all that. Like, yeah in my wildest dreams, I never thought that'd be how they'd open the movie.
Speaker: And when you're introduced to, ah
Speaker: ah to Thorny or Ram and you're introduced to Rabbit or The Rookie, you know, like,
Speaker: They're so serious. And they actually deal like they're actual cops. And so it's just like, well, okay, so you got three stoners in a vehicle and you got people that are playing it serious.
Speaker: Well, then the guy in the backseat so fucking geeked out of his mind. and he's And they're like, we're going to watch you smoke this whole bag. And the one guy's like, oh, no, please no. And he's like, please, yes. that Then it kind of dawned on me.
Speaker: But I mean, i wasn't seeing this in theaters because there was no way my mom was going to let us see it. Like she we originally wanted to go see scary movie. And yet someone had come out of the theater seeing it and was just like, it's stupid and it's over sexualized and all that stuff.
Speaker: I think someone would have said the same thing about this movie. And that would have that going back on that, knowing what I know now, if someone would have said that, I probably would have slapped him one because, I mean, it wasn't like, yeah, you have a scene where, you know, he's making out with the wife of the guy that they pull over in the Porsche.
Speaker: But I mean, it's it's not like they're doing it on the car.
Speaker: And, you know, i still say the stupidest character in there is Farva. I would have to agree with that. i mean, yeah, bar bar none. He's definitely this the dumbest character. But I think at the same time, he could be very smart.
Speaker: But they just... It doesn't fit who he is. ah Right. it I don't think it would go over as well if they had casted him as a very smart guy.
Speaker: Yeah. Or even just a tad bit smarter. don't think it would have gone over as but well. And like, you could tell that the main guy, um Thorny, is, you know, you could tell that he's going to be the leader.
Speaker: And... I love when they're talking about Johnny Chimpo and O'Hara is like, is that what they do f in and f in Afghanistan? he's like, how would I know? Just pick it on the guy for no reason.
Speaker: And of course, Rabbit just being the fucking, the rookie of the bunch. my ah You know, when they're when they're doing the syrup chugging.
Speaker: Like, my gosh how many times they had to do that to get it right. And then afterwards, they were like, that was a stupid scene. We were never going to film something like that again. Because, God, I could only imagine how bad that would screw up your stomach.
Speaker: ah Right. Like, i I don't think I would want to deal with those kind of cramps. No. Because...
Speaker: It acts as a laxative. ah Right. and And then on top of that, all the sugar that's in syrup too. oh my god.
Speaker: And then when ah when um they they play the fucking meow game and and Mac is on the other side just dying laughing.
Speaker: Like, you you know... You know that was not ad-libbed or anything. like He was literally laughing his ass off. And McIntyre is... McIntyre, I do have to say for his character,
Speaker: the funniest of the bunch, of that whole broken lizard troop in that movie. like He is the craziest bastard in the world. like when they're When they're at the shooting range, he's in nothing but a bulletproof cup. And rabbits trying not to puke.
Speaker: I think I'm on rabbit's side on that one. oh I would be think I would be trying to hold in the cookies as well. I would be too. Because, I mean, yeah And then, of course, here comes the chief. And he's like, back in my day, we made the rabbit strip down. And shoots the windshield out of the fucking thing. And he's like, and we also use blanks. You're one crazy motherfucker. Yeah.
Speaker: Mac. And he's like, thank you. The fact that he just completely owns it. Yeah. I mean, it's just, yeah. Well, I mean, even in the beginning when he's when he's getting chased by the by the ah by the other police officers and he's like, they're like, put your fucking hands up, freeze. He's just like, gotcha.
Speaker: And they're like, Mac, you fucker. Yeah.
Speaker: right yeah So, I guess this is kind of, you kind of already answered this, but if you had to choose one of the characters in the movie, who would you say is your favorite?
Speaker: Mac.
Speaker: i I do like Mac, but I also like...
Speaker: I really like Foster too. oh yeah. Yeah. Like he he's so, so naive, but
Speaker: I think that's what makes him so likable. Well, yeah. I mean, and plus what the other cops in there from Spurberry are the dumbest too. When Mac just hurls the bot, the bottle at, uh, rando and then he goes to sit down again and just gets the other but the other bottle son of a bitch or the cotton candy at the ba at the softball game how the how's the look from sugar heaven bitch
Speaker: so i'm I've got a little quick fire questions okay on the movie So it's four questions and tell me who you think
Speaker: is the most likely of the the main characters. yeah Okay. Who do you think steals every scene?
Speaker: Farva.
Speaker: I think Farva would be a good one, but I think Mac also kind of really steals the scene too. Because he he does all the whacked out shit.
Speaker: Yes, but I mean, with with me saying Farva, I think it's more of a he doesn't intentionally. Like, I could see the actor meeting the actor in real life.
Speaker: Well, even look at how he was in Tacoma FD. True. like Like Mac in that show compared to the Super Troopers is totally different.
Speaker: Right. And so, I mean, you could go either or with that. Okay. And who do you think would be the worst coworker?
Speaker: Farva. yeah I think that one's hands down. i don't think that one even needs discussion. And who would you actually want to work with?
Speaker: Thorny.
Speaker: See, and i I think I would be more along the foster side of things again. He's such goody good though. I know, but look at me.
Speaker: Yeah, that is true. Okay, and last but not least, is Farva on the hilarious side of things or just incredibly annoying side of things?
Speaker: Incredibly annoying.
Speaker: Well, I mean, look what he did on his first day back. Like, he literally fought two workers at the fucking Tempest Burger. All because they fucked with his drink. like fall
Speaker: Like, I mean, how many people do you know would literally be unsuspended and suspended within a day?
Speaker: Farva. I don't want a large farva. I want a damn liter cola. if it Do we make liter of cola? oh And which which game they played throughout the movie as they were approaching their traffic stops.

Speaker: did you think was the funniest or that you liked the most? the ah The meow.
Speaker: that That one is a really good one. um
Speaker: i
Speaker: i guess it's not really when they they approached it, but in the very beginning when Max says... you boys like Mexico.
Speaker: I really like that part too. Yeah, but that wasn't a game. I know. I know. That's what I said. I prefaced it the way I did.
Speaker: um But yes, I think of the true games. I think the meow was was the best one. Because the repeat one, like, Foster didn't want to do it. And Mac was just like, well, fuck you. I'm going to do it anyway.
Speaker: It's time to stop now, Mac. It is time to stop now, Mac.
Speaker: Just the way he says it. Just like, oh my god. well That's the second time I got crabs. Yeah.
Speaker: but good um But then I think he was kind of confused because he had been throwing so many different made up words.
Speaker: Yeah. Plus the guy's last name. Mr. Galakonokos.
Speaker: All right. So of the following themes.
Speaker: I want to know which ones are your top three funniest.
Speaker: The opening traffic stop, meow game, choir at the fast food restaurant, the German couple, the bear scene, the drug bust, or the powdered sugar prank.
Speaker: um
Speaker: Farva in the restaurant.
Speaker: The meow scene. And one scene that you didn't bring up, the one where he's outside the um ah the police station trying to streak.
Speaker: Oh, yeah. yeahp Yeah, Foster. I forgot about that one. Those are my three.
Speaker: i I would put my three being um
Speaker: but back to the do you boys like Mexico? I know that one wasn't technically listed. um I would put the bear scene up there.
Speaker: And I would say Farva at the fast food f restaurant as well. Well, yeah, because he just goes in there and the guy just pokes him once and he's just like looking at him like he wants to just beat the piss out of him. Like Farva, Farva is that friend that you know you're going to the bar with?
Speaker: Like you're trying to tell him, oh, yeah, we're going to be at this bar. And somehow he makes it to damn it, Alyssa. And somehow he makes it to the same bar. And then you're just like, well, yeah, I tried to tell you we were here.
Speaker: he he's He's the friend that you would purposely tell to go to the other bar. Oh, definitely. 100%. Or if
Speaker: or if you found out the real bar, quick change the bar. he He was the CJ of our group. If you had ever met CJ, you'd you'd know damn well who I'm talking about.
Speaker: what things within the movie do you think wouldn't be the same f that first movie had been made today?
Speaker: Or do you think it would have changed? Oh, yeah. I think would have been a lot toned down.
Speaker: And I... I always hate when, you know, you do... When you watch things like podcasts or they talk about, like... Example, Blazing Saddles.
Speaker: And they're like, well, it couldn't be made today. I think it still could. It'd be so toned down, though. Right, right. And same with this movie. I think a lot of the jokes back then don't hit as well as to today. Granted, in my opinion, they do.
Speaker: But you also have to realize in the opinion of others that They probably wouldn't hit. I mean, granted, kids nowadays I don't think would find some of the humor that we found funny funny.
Speaker: Right. And that that's what I was just about to say is i think our generation understands it more, would laugh at it more than, say, most Gen Zers because they just don't think the same.
Speaker: Are we? jittin' We're not Gen Z. No, we're millennial. Yeah. I'm comparing to. Oh, yeah. Nowadays. Yeah. Yeah. Well, yeah, I mean, it it's.
Speaker: It's sad that I would even say that the three stooges couldn't be done today.
Speaker: Because it'd be looked at as too. vi I mean, look at what they did with Looney Tunes. They looked at Elmer Fudd hunting a rabbit as dangerous and children would do it. It's like, no, we didn't look at it that way.
Speaker: and And same with this movie. You know, shooting a guy in the balls, even though he had the cup on, like, I feel like that would not fly today.
Speaker: Even the scene where he's screwing the bear. Like, I don't think that would fly today either. They would say, oh, well, that's cruelty to animals. And, you know, um
Speaker: I think where they make fun of Thorny, you know, his ethnicity, i don't think could be done today. Or if it was, it'd be toned down too much. Like, oh, we're just kidding, Thorne. Like, we didn't mean that. We're sorry for your feelings. And and the second movie kind of hit on that humor.
Speaker: Where, you know, it was, it they played it a little bit safer, which kind of makes me wonder how 3 is going to be. But granted, I don't have high expectations for it.
Speaker: Like, I don't go into movies with high expectations. Unless it's Halloween. But, you know, um yeah. i I think even them picking on Farva kind of got toned down a lot in the sequel.
Speaker: And so it's just like, I think i think if they had made Super Troopers today, I don't think it would have I think it would been more of a miss than a hit.
Speaker: Right. um So another kind of game to just kind of break it up a little bit. and Okay. The likelihood of this actually happening rated 1 to 10.
Speaker: one to ten One being very unrealistic. Ten being, yeah, that could actually really actually happen.
Speaker: Do you think the officers could get away with what they got away with in the movie today in real life? Oh, fuck no.
Speaker: Like Farva fighting in that restaurant scene. No, that cop would have been fired. They would have, they if not fired, would have been pretty much put on probation for a lot longer than he was.
Speaker: Right. um that There was a lot of asses and elbows in the movie. Yeah. and Oh, yeah. fly Yeah. um So, one to ten, how quickly do you think they would be fired?
Speaker: In today's day and age, um I'd say pretty quick. I'd say within a month's investigation. yeah I would put that as like, on that scale, probably like a seven or eight.
Speaker: And then, of course, when they got into a fight with Spurberry at the Winnebago, I think that would have immediately, there would have been no suspension. There would have been suspensions there. No, no.
Speaker: no I think that would have automatically been a firing, especially being in the in the paper. But I mean, then they would have been firing basically the entire police force because it wouldn't it wouldn't just be so the state cops or the troopers.
Speaker: It would also be Sperbury because Sperbury got into it just as much. Yeah, but they would look at it from who started the fight. And granted, it was so it was Grady, but still, the first person that would have gotten there to tell the story, we automatically... And that's the thing in today's day and age.
Speaker: We don't listen to both sides. It's only one side. and And if this movie actually did take place today, oh yeah, you'd only hear one side of the story. And as much as the mob mentality is, they only believe one side of the story. Sure.
Speaker: And, you know, another one that wouldn't fly today is Rabbit and the um wife of the guy in the Porsche.
Speaker: Like that scene would not fly today. Right. Because it would look at, well, you should have cuffed her, but instead you tried to have your way with her.
Speaker: And he would, he would be suspended at first, but I think he'd be fired too. Right. Even though she propositioned it. Right. Like the only part of that story you'd hear is cop tried to have his way with, you know, person pulled over.
Speaker: All right. So. And so let's let's give out some MVP awards.
Speaker: Punniest character.
Speaker: I think O'Hara.
Speaker: I think Mac.
Speaker: best performance? ah
Speaker: I'd have to go with probably
Speaker: I'd have to go Foster. See, in this one, I think I would go O'Hara.
Speaker: ah Just because he plays the most serious character in the entire movie. And he does it so well without breaking.
Speaker: i love when he's like, I'll pistol up the next person that says shenanigans. Like, he didn't even break when they made fun of his accent. Like, when he's like, Farrah's shenanigans, shenanigans.
Speaker: um most underrated character
Speaker: rabbit yeah I would agree with you on that one biggest laugh Mac Yeah.
Speaker: Biggest surprise.
Speaker: Spurberry being the bad guys.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Kind of out of MVPs, but still kind of along that same line. Who do you think has the best mustache?
Speaker: Thorny.
Speaker: Because only two... two no three. Thorny, Mac, and... Farver are the only ones that have mustaches. Well, they count Farvers. It's a mustache.
Speaker: His is. i know, but it's just a very weak one, in my opinion. Yeah. I mean, the Spurberry, i think it's just one that has the mustache on Spurberry, and that's Rando. Yeah, I think so. Best prank.
Speaker: I think we've already kind of established that as being Meow. No.
Speaker: I think this ain't Aki's thing at the ending. Oh, yeah, I forgot about that one. Yeah, yep.
Speaker: Favorite quote?
Speaker: The schnozberries takes like schnozberries. Yep.
Speaker: Best traffic stop. I think the one in the beginning.
Speaker: With the stoners.
Speaker: I mean, yeah, that's one of them. I think the meow game. Or the one where he calls the old couple chicken fuckers. okay um Most chaotic character.
Speaker: Mac.
Speaker: I think Farva. He's kind of a wild card, so. Well, yeah. Yeah, I mean, he he that he has the fight that he has with the kids on the fucking bus.
Speaker: Right. um Worst decision.
Speaker: Blocking themselves in the squad car when they're having sex.
Speaker: That's a good one. Otherwise, i was going to say when they stopped the soap truck and both of them got on the back end of the truck.
Speaker: I mean, yeah. ah Funniest facial expressions.
Speaker: The guy licking the window. Yes. Yes. I would agree.
Speaker: Character you'd avoid in real life. and
Speaker: Yeah. He just seems like a giant asshole. Yeah. yeah um Character you trust to drive you home.
Speaker: Foster. Now when he's pissing on the guy's car when he's drunk, no.
Speaker: ah I didn't say he was drunk at the time.
Speaker: um Character you least trust with your secrets. Fargo. Mac.
Speaker: I could see that too. I picked Farva just because he... He told Spurberry about... No! Foster. Foster.
Speaker: Because he couldn't even say stop saying that he had fallen in love with... What's her name from
Speaker: What would you say is an unpopular opinion about the movie?
Speaker: That's not funny.
Speaker: I think that's an unpopular opinion. and I think it's funny. It's just, you have to understand the humor.
Speaker: Yeah. Um,
Speaker: I think
Speaker: i think for me it's more so how the cast plays off of one another versus the story of the movie.
Speaker: Like I think there's just
Speaker: way more there with the cast. I think it would be a completely different movie if it didn't have the cast. even if it was written the exact same. Yeah. That makes sense.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: All right. I, I think it's verdict time on the movie. What do you think?
Speaker: scale of one to 10.
Speaker: Do you think this passes the certified Jarvis?
Speaker: Likeable movies. Oh yeah. um
Speaker: I mean, I do agree that, you know, if you were to put anyone else in this movie other than broken lizard, group i don't think it hits i don't think it does i think it would have been a throwaway movie and it would have just been one of those cop movies that you know well we've already seen this in different shows and movies of the whole stupid you know police force and all that type movies so yeah i i don't think it honestly would
Speaker: So on on the likable scale, one to 10, where would you place it?
Speaker: I'd put it as seven.
Speaker: And I think I would agree with you on that one. um Just because, like like you said, i think it could have been a very different movie without the cast.
Speaker: all
Speaker: But the cast does a phenomenal job. So I think that brings it up a little bit more. Yeah.
