Introduction & Salute to Veterans

00:00:13
Speaker
What is up, Goal Line listeners? I am back for another week of the Goal Line podcast, and I am happy to have you all back with me as well. It was another exciting week of NFL and college ball, and I can't wait to get into it with you guys.
00:00:29
Speaker
It is halftime of the Monday night game between the Packers and Eagles, and it is a snoozer. It is 0-0 at halftime, so figured I might as well just go ahead and hit play now and Let's just get into it rather than sit here and watch the rest of this shitty football game. So first thing I want to say is I want to wish all the veterans out there a happy Veterans Day tomorrow.
00:00:53
Speaker
Thank you all for your service. You guys protect us each and every day. And i'll also a special shout out to Seth. um I mean, one of my best friends in the world and obviously still enlisted in the Navy. So, yeah, just very thankful for all of you. And ah thanks for listening. And um hopefully you get some joy out of this today because this be coming out on Veterans Day. You can enjoy 30 minutes of listening to me talk about football.

College Football Highlights

00:01:21
Speaker
And, yeah, with that, let's ah let's get into some college talk.
00:01:45
Speaker
All right, as always, let's ah let's get it started with ah my Nebraska Cornhuskers. It got a huge win for them. I know i know they're playing UCLA, but very big win for them on the road on Saturday night.
00:01:59
Speaker
um Had the backup quarterback, TJ Lateef, starting. um He looked good, man. he he He did what he was supposed to do. Made smart throws, made smart decisions.
00:02:10
Speaker
Yeah. just kind of everything you're looking for in a freshman quarterback making his first start, especially on the road. um Emmitt Johnson was just absolutely incredible this weekend. Um, if you didn't know the name before this weekend, I think it's safe to so say everyone does now.
00:02:31
Speaker
ah he is finally starting to get a little bit of Heisman talk. I know he's not going to win it because Nebraska is seven and three. You're not winning a Heisman on a seven and three football team, but he at least deserves to be in the running for it. He definitely should be an all American this year. So I'm excited to see what happens at the end of the year.
00:02:47
Speaker
um Yeah, just kind of raced out to a big lead, 28-7 in the third quarter, and just kind of took their foot off the gas and made it way too close. This game shouldn't have been close. I mean, Nebraska's offense just moved the ball with ease, and they just kind of let their foot off the gas in the second half and let UCLA get back into it. Nico is just, he's an incredible quarterback. He can do incredible things, and That's what happens when you just you kind of get stagnant and you just you stop playing football. But, again, they got the win.
00:03:18
Speaker
Seven and three going into their bye this weekend. And then they close it at Penn State and then Iowa at home. So, mean, season's still in front of them. Like, they're obviously not making the playoffs. They've already got three losses, which To be quite honest with you, I never expected that to happen. It just, I mean, if they end 8-4, 9-3, like, i will be very happy as ah long as they win one of these last two. I'd obviously prefer them to win both, but, um yeah, I'm just, I'm happy with it at this point. I mean, they're they're showing improvement, so that's what really matters to me.
00:03:53
Speaker
um Let's get into Friday night. Memphis was upset by Tulane. I seriously thought Memphis was just going to go on a roll here at the end of the season and get themselves into the college football playoff.
00:04:06
Speaker
It looks like now Tulane is kind of in the driver's seat for the at-large non-Power 4 team. So it'll be interesting to see who gets it. um Good win for Tulane. But, yeah, Memphis is a frustrating football team. they They looked really good last week and then do this this week. Yeah.
00:04:25
Speaker
ah Texas Tech just absolutely dismantled BYU. I personally did not see this coming. The way BYU had been playing and um just kind of buying into that underdog status, even though they were a top 10 team, but for some reason they were an underdog every week and it just kept working. And this week, Texas Tech just took it to them and just never let them breathe. So um Texas Tech's looking really good.
00:04:51
Speaker
Georgia continues to roll, just destroyed Mississippi State. Again, just never let them breathe. just There was nothing Mississippi State could do in that game to slow Georgia down, and it just kept going. So Georgia looks like they're going to be right there at the end, which shocking, I know.
00:05:11
Speaker
But, yeah, they're they're playing really good football, and it seems like they're starting to hit their stride at the right time.
00:05:18
Speaker
Indiana survives at Penn State. This game was... This was a hell of a game. And it it ends on the catch of the... Possible catch of the year by Omar Cooper.
00:05:29
Speaker
ah If you haven't seen it, go back and watch it. Just phenomenal body control to to come down and get it ah foot down and bounce. It just... Absolutely incredible. I thought Indiana was done numerous times in this game. and Came back and won. Fernando Mendoza, just he keeps doing it, man. He just...
00:05:51
Speaker
And as much as I hate Kirk Signetti, he's just a cocky shit, but for lack of a better term, he just he's not wrong, man. They they just win. like It doesn't always have to be the prettiest thing, but they just keep winning.
00:06:06
Speaker
And that in football, that's all that matters. It's just you keep winning. You win in advance, win and survive, whatever you want to call it. ah just They keep doing it, so...
00:06:18
Speaker
Oregon goes into Kinnick and beats Iowa in a... It was a good, really, really ugly Big Ten game. I did not think Oregon had them in it, had that in them to win a game like that. I just, it was rainy. It was cold. i just, I did not think that was a game that Oregon could go in and win. They were down a lot of wide receivers. I mean, they had every excuse to lose that game and they they came back and won it, kicked a field goal at the end of that game to to win it by two. And like I said, in Iowa City, that's an impressive win. I don't,
00:06:51
Speaker
I hate Iowa, but i mean winning there, ah yeah especially when it's cold like that and rainy, it's very impressive by Oregon. ah Texas A&M just keeps rolling. They steamrolled Missouri. it's just Texas A&M looks like they're on a different level right now, and they're just playing such good football. and Again, just keep keep stacking wins, keep winning at the right time, and they're going to be there at the end of the season. so Vandy escapes in overtime against Auburn.
00:07:23
Speaker
Another, just a really good football game, just a fun football game to watch. Um, Vandy just they they keep letting these games come down to the end but I mean they won so that's all that matters but Vandy is a fun team to watch I really have enjoyed watching this team this year and just kind of watching the growth over the year they are a really fun football team to watch and I'm rooting for em man I I hope they're they're there at the end but I just, I don't know. if The SEC is just so deep. I mean, what's new? This is a yearly thing. This is not news to anyone, but they just keep playing well and keep winning these games. So good for Vandy.
00:08:06
Speaker
ah Not playing well. Washington loses to Wisconsin. Wisconsin completed six passes for 48 yards in this game. I know Washington had a ton of injuries and stuff, but this was embarrassingly bad for them. I mean, Wisconsin didn't even look like...
00:08:25
Speaker
that Barely looked like a D1 football team for the last couple weeks. Yeah. Yeah. Not a good loss at all for Washington. um They were still in the playoff conversation, but obviously this puts them completely out of it.
00:08:41
Speaker
um So, yeah, going be interesting last couple weeks here. ah Virginia and Louisville both get upset. The ACC is so far down this year. Like, it's just it's bad.
00:08:54
Speaker
It's not a good football conference at all. this is not going to help the conference at all, obviously. I mean, Virginia looked like they were just going to keep going until the ACC championship, but yeah, it kind of got derailed and Louisville, same thing. And they looked really good and,
00:09:13
Speaker
just unfortunately bit the bullet at the worst time. it just, it happens, man. It's college football, just like we, it's any given Saturday and you can lose anybody. You can't overlook anybody in college football, especially in the NIL era.
00:09:28
Speaker
there's There's just, the players are are spread out now just because they can get paid wherever they go. So, it's good for college i think it is that i don't

Impact of NIL on College Football

00:09:38
Speaker
love nil but there is parts of it i like especially with transfers and stuff like that like these guys are going to go places they can play and get paid to play so can't overlook anybody any week um we got three weeks of regular season college football left and it's just crazy how quick the season always goes it just it flies by and
00:10:00
Speaker
It just, it always seems like it goes quicker every season. So yeah, let's let's enjoy these last three weeks of regular season college football. A lot of college teams' seasons end in three weeks. So you just got to enjoy every game, every play, and just kind of take it for what it is. So with that, let's get into some picks.

College Football Predictions

00:10:21
Speaker
So we've got number 10 Notre Dame going to number 24 Pittsburgh this weekend. I like what Pitt is doing. i do not like their chances against Notre Dame.
00:10:32
Speaker
Notre Dame has started to play a lot better, obviously. um i just i don't see how Pitt wins this game, so I'm going to go Notre Dame. um We've got number 12 Oklahoma at number four Bama.
00:10:45
Speaker
I'm going Alabama. I just think they're a more put-together football team. um i just I feel like they're playing better football right now, and just I think they're going to keep it going.
00:10:56
Speaker
Number 11, Texas at number 5, Georgia. I think Georgia wins this game. I think it might get a little out of hand. um i just Georgia's just a better football team overall. and Texas has played some really weird games this season. I feel like they're getting a little better now, but I still don't trust him, man. i don't trust Arch. I don't, there's a lot of things about this team I don't trust. So I'm going to go Georgia. I'll probably go over for three on these picks somehow, but either way, I mean, it's still fun to do it. So we'll just kind of see how it goes. But ah yeah, with that, ah let's talk some NFL. Yeah.

NFL Analysis

00:11:47
Speaker
All right, let's start it off and rip the Band-Aid off right away. This is what guys keep tuning in for anyways. Listen to me complain about the Falcons and the the misery it is being a Falcons fan.
00:12:00
Speaker
Falcons find another way to lose a game. They just played back-to-back really good weeks against two really good football teams, Patriots and Colts back-to-back weeks.
00:12:13
Speaker
this one just felt weird though, the whole game. Like they were ahead and I just, I did not feel good at all. I know I'm normally already skeptical about the Falcons, but they were ahead, but they definitely were not the better team when they were ahead. It just, the Colts did a lot wrong in this game.
00:12:31
Speaker
Falcons also. So yeah, let's get into it. um Jonathan Taylor just absolutely goes off, which it didn't surprise me. I mean,
00:12:42
Speaker
Falcons at their core are just it's just not good. they They have a good pass defense, but run defense is questionable at best. He had 244 yards and three touchdowns. It's just it wasn't good. um I've talked about numerous times. Michael Penix has just not been good enough. He was 12 of 28 for yards last yesterday. think i saw somewhere for yards in the second half and over time Just that that's not good enough. I mean, it's it's just it's not good enough. So, going have to learn there. Their usage of Bijan continues to piss me off. I just i don't get it.
00:13:23
Speaker
I'll never understand what they're doing. i think I saw something that said he had two carries in third quarter. I don't think he had... maybe two in the fourth quarter. It just, he didn't get the ball once in overtime. It's just frustrating to watch as a fan. This guy's incredible and they have no idea how to use him. So it's just, it's frustrating to watch and just gets more and more annoying each week's but each way The other annoying thing is every time the Falcons blitzed when the Colts dropped back to pass, it seemed like they got to Daniel Jones immediately.
00:13:55
Speaker
So, of course, on that drive um for the Colts to tie it up with a field goal, they just stopped blitzing after it worked three times on that drive. They just stopped blitzing for no apparent reason.
00:14:08
Speaker
I'm sure Raheem Morris was busy thinking about what he was going to do after the game and didn't have time to actually focus on the game because he's a terrible head coach. and ah I think Raheem Morris is one of the worst head coaches in the NFL, if not the worst.
00:14:24
Speaker
they're just There's so many things about him that when the game's on the line, he just... He doesn't do it right. um I did see this today. So when Arthur Blank decided to hire Raheem Morris, he was twenty one and thirty eight Not good. and And it's even worse now. He's thirty two and fifty three So, yeah, just not a good head coach. And this team is poorly run from top to bottom. I've always Arthur Blank is just m Seems like a good guy, but he's a terrible owner. i just
00:14:57
Speaker
He does not cut people off when they need to be cut off, and that's why the Falcons are in the position they're in. they just They have the talent. They're never coached well. Rich McKay's a joke.
00:15:08
Speaker
I thought they should have got rid of him numerous times, and they didn't. So that's why they're where they are at now, and it's just it's frustrating to watch as a fan. Yeah, just another bad week. I know this is getting repetitive week after week, but I mean, it's just the way I feel. so ah Broncos went ugly on Thursday night against the Raiders, and ugly is the best way to describe this game. It was very, very bad.
00:15:35
Speaker
ah There's really not much to break down about this game. They won 10-7, but it was a hideous football game. ah Texans score 26 in the fourth quarter to beat Jacksonville. Texans looked absolutely dead going into this fourth quarter, and they just exploded against the Jaguars.
00:15:57
Speaker
Yeah, the Jaguars are just, what a weird team. um This is going to be one of the most weird seasons when you look at the Jags at the end of the season. It's just, they beat good teams and then lose like this to a Davis Mills-led Houston team. It's just so weird.
00:16:16
Speaker
I don't get it, man. therere They have enough talent where they should be playing better than what they are. And yeah, I'd be i'd be really frustrated if i was Jags fan right now. Saints beat the Panthers, which this one shocked me, to be completely honest with you. The Panthers were playing such good ball.
00:16:33
Speaker
I guess I shouldn't be shocked. It is the Panthers after all. So it's not like they were playing a world-beater team. But, um yeah, the Saints did enough on offense, which I was surprised by. um Yeah, 17-7 over the Panthers.
00:16:50
Speaker
ah Patriots outlast the Bucs. This game was was really good and kind of what I thought it would be. A lot of the Bucs injuries that they have kind of showed in this game, they need Bucky Irvin back bad.
00:17:02
Speaker
Like, they need him back very, very bad. and um i thought he would be back already, though. Like, I feel like this injury, there's more to it that they're just not saying anything about. Because I assumed he was going to be back long before this. Like, it's just, it's kind of crazy that he still has not played. so I guess we'll see what happens, but yeah, it's just, it seems crazy that he still has not played. Uh, Drake may just, he, he's definitely up there for MVP race. Drake may is he's, he's done everything he's supposed to do. And these second year quarterbacks are the majority of them are playing really well. Um, Drake may top of that list, just absolutely balling.
00:17:53
Speaker
Uh, the jets beat the Browns. I, this This game was definitely two of the worst teams in the NFL. The Jets came out on top. They had two special team scores.
00:18:05
Speaker
Just what a weird game, man. i The Browns just they have no direction at all. I mean, they do have a direction that's down, but... They just, they're just blind leading the blind and in Cleveland. And I did see Deshaun Watson's clears for practice again. So we'll see how that goes. that That should be interesting to see how they handle that situation. Cause I'm sure they'll, they'll handle it with, with great success.
00:18:30
Speaker
uh Ravens beat the Vikings Ravens have won three straight this team is just getting hot at the right time they're getting healthy and yeah I'm interested to see how how far they take this for this winning streak because they are playing really well um JJ McCarthy did not look good yesterday he he definitely struggled and Really struggle on throwing the ball down the field. it just seemed like his receivers were open so many times he just flat out missed them. So growing pains of a technically rookie quarterback. So we'll see how he shakes out.
00:19:05
Speaker
Bills get absolutely smoked by the Dolphins.
00:19:10
Speaker
this This is was a shocking result. like The Bills just seem like they're poorly coached. It just seems like the coaching staff does not know what they're doing. Joe Brady really seems like he's neutered Josh Allen because Josh Allen isn't doing any of the things that we're used to Josh Allen doing. Yeah.
00:19:29
Speaker
I hope they get it straightened out because I really do like this football team. And they just came off beating the Chiefs too. it just How do you lose to the Dolphins right after that? The NFL is so weird this year.
00:19:42
Speaker
Bears get another win. Jackson Dart concussed. If Jackson Dart does not go out of this game, the Bears do not win this game. like I don't think I'm breaking news to any Bears fans here, but Jackson Dart was playing really, really well. Yeah.
00:19:56
Speaker
we'll We'll see what happens with him Bears win again. They're coming into the really hard part of their schedule, so we're going to see how good they actually are these ah these next eight weeks. but Good win for them. i mean, they have nothing to apologize about. Jackson Dart got hurt and Russell Wilson came in, which leads me to beg the question, why is Russell Wilson still the quarterback of the Giants? I'd much rather have Jameis out there slinging that ball around than Russell Wilson because Russell Wilson is a nothing burger at this point.
00:20:26
Speaker
Giants fired Brian Dayball today, which I think the majority of people saw this coming. I mean, it's just... not good. They did retain their GM, which people are up in their arms at about. They're very pissed about it. So we'll we'll see how they go.
00:20:42
Speaker
Seahawks looked like an absolute juggernaut on defense yesterday. Sam Darnold did not have a good game, but still, I think Seattle's going to be there at the end, man. they They're a really good football team.
00:20:53
Speaker
NFC's getting very top-heavy at this point. like Some really good teams at the top of the NFC. The Lions finally looked like the Lions again.
00:21:04
Speaker
Dan Campbell took over offensive play calling. So Ben Johnson's still really good, and he's doing a lot of good things for the Bears. But Dan Campbell is really good at what he does, and it's clear that they can still run a really high-powered ah offense with Dan Campbell calling the shots. So they looked good. Yeah.
00:21:26
Speaker
Another team that looked very, very good, the Rams. This team's a legit Super Bowl contender with the way Stafford's playing. I think I saw you yesterday he took the the lead in the MVP ah betting lines. like he just He is slinging the ball. i mean Puka was back, obviously, yesterday. Devontae Adams is playing really well. Kyron Williams played really well.
00:21:49
Speaker
This is a really good team. Their defense flies around, so they're going to be there at the end. It's going to be... The NFC West is tough, man. It's a very good division. ah Chargers just absolutely shut down the Steelers last night. The Steelers looked like they just they had no idea what was going on from the start of that game to the finish of that game. It just it was all bad for the Steelers. Really good win for the Chargers, though. they I felt like they needed that win as a confidence booster. Again, I still don't know how good the Steelers are, but...
00:22:20
Speaker
I really feel like the Chargers needed a win like that just to kind of put some put some wind back in their sails. I do not love their offensive line, though, not having Alt and Slater.
00:22:31
Speaker
It's going to be tough sledding for the Chargers moving forward. So well we'll see how they handle it. But, yeah, it just was... The night games this week have not been good. So um speaking of night games, so the yeah the Eagles kicked a field goal, so it's 3-0 right now with 740 left in the third quarter.
00:22:50
Speaker
um That's it for this week in NFL. We are just, we're moving right along. So let let's just keep it moving and let's do some week 11 picks.
00:23:04
Speaker
All right, Thursday night, we have the 2-7 Jets at the 8-2 Patriots. I'm going to go ahead and go on a limb and say the Patriots win this game easily. and don't think that's a big limb, but I think it's going to happen.
00:23:18
Speaker
Okay, we've got the last international game that is in Madrid. It is between the 3-7 Commanders and the 3-7 Dolphins. I'm going to go Dolphins just based the off the way they played in the last month. I just think they're a better team at this point than the Commanders, so I'm going to go Dolphins based off that.
00:23:38
Speaker
The 5-5 Panthers go to the 3-6 Falcons. I have no faith that the Falcons beat anybody at this point, so I'm going go Panthers. I just i don't feel good about anything the Falcons are doing right now. So, yeah, I'll say the Panthers win that game.
00:23:53
Speaker
Oh, man, this is a big game. We have a 6-3 Bucs going to Buffalo to play the 6-3 Bills.
00:24:03
Speaker
I think the Bills will put it together. I do. i just I feel like this team is too good. Not saying the Bucs aren't good, but Bills cannot lose two straight games. They've got to win this game. I'll go Bills.
00:24:16
Speaker
Four and five Texans going to the one and eight Titans. I'll go Texans. I think that's pretty self-explanatory. Six and three Bears coming going to Minnesota to play the four and five Vikings.
00:24:29
Speaker
Vikings are favored in this game. I don't know if they should be.
00:24:35
Speaker
i just I think the Bears are going win this game. i don't The Vikings just have not impressed me at all. I just i think the Bears are a better team. ah The 5-2-1 Packers are going to the 2-8 Giants.
00:24:50
Speaker
The Giants will get a boost off a firing Dayball, but I don't think it's going to be enough Packers win. Three and six Bengals going to the five and four Steelers. I don't love what the Steelers are doing at all, but I also don't love anything the Bengals do defensively. So I'm going to go with the Steelers in this game.
00:25:08
Speaker
Seven and three Chargers traveling to the five and four Jaguars. I will go Chargers just because I feel like they're a more put together football team than the Jags. I just don't love what the Jags are doing right now.
00:25:20
Speaker
Oh boy. Game of the week right here. seven and two Seahawks going to the 7-2 Rams.
00:25:30
Speaker
I mean, going to go base off quarterback play here, and I trust Matt Stafford a hell of a lot more than I trust Sam Darnold. So with that in mind, I'll go with the Rams in this game, and they're at home. 6-4 49ers going to the 3-6 Cardinals. I think the 49ers bounce back and win this game.
00:25:49
Speaker
Four and five Ravens going to the two and seven Browns. I'm going Ravens. Ravens need to keep winning. And I do think they keep it going. We got the five and four Chiefs going to the eighty and two Broncos. This is a really, really big game. Obviously, i don't need to say that, but...
00:26:10
Speaker
going to go Chiefs. I just... I don't know. just There's just something that's not rubbing me the right way about the Broncos. I just think the Chiefs are still a better team. Sunday night, we've got the six and three Lions traveling to the 6-2 Eagles.
00:26:28
Speaker
I just like this Lions team better. i just i feel like they're a better team overall, and I love Dan Campbell. I'm going to go Lions. This is going to be a tight game, though. It should be a really good one.
00:26:39
Speaker
then Monday night, we've got the 3-5-1 Cowboys going to the 2-7 Raiders. Cowboys have got to win this game. They've got to put together a decent game one of these couple weeks. So I'm going go Cowboys.
00:26:52
Speaker
Whether or not that's stupid decision would be two to be determined, but and just i feel like the Cowboys are going to win that game. that They have enough weapons to win that game.

Listener Q&A on Injuries and Impact of Joe Burrow's Absence

00:27:02
Speaker
ah Let's get into some listener mail.
00:27:06
Speaker
We got five questions. First one's from Brian Vermeer. Falcons versus the Bears. Who do you got and who has a better quarterback? I just said I'm not picking the Falcons against anybody, so I would go Bears, and i would say Caleb Williams is playing much better than Michael Penix is this year. so we are same same Brian Vermeer asks, we are halfway through the NFL season. What do you think were the biggest team changing injuries?
00:27:32
Speaker
You got to start with Burrow. I mean, that team is just not the same when he doesn't play. Problem is, is their defense is so bad. And just and I said it in the preseason, I did not like anything about what this team did as far as putting together their defense. So I'll say him. I mean, I know that's kind of a cop-out, but it just, it feels like the one.
00:27:52
Speaker
The other ones, i already mentioned them, but Joe Alton, Rashawn Slater, both being the out for the Chargers is just, it's really bad for them. so Next question is from our buddy Sam Rosenthal.
00:28:05
Speaker
How are you doing in fantasy this year? So it's funny you ask that. So I am about to be 6-4 in the goal line league. um I am 7-2 the league I'm in with Seth.
00:28:20
Speaker
And and need Jordan Love to get three more points, and I will be 8-2 that league. And then in my dynasty league, I am up right now. I'm seven and two, but he still has Saquon and Josh Jacobs and I have the Packers defense. So going to be tight.
00:28:42
Speaker
um But yeah, that's pretty much your fantasy wrap up. Sam Rosenthal also has, how can organizations, whether it be college or NFL, be more patient with coaches or GMs? I feel lately a rebuild is impossible.
00:28:57
Speaker
The problem is is you have to make sure you have the right coach in there. like ah I agree with you. Rebuilds are really hard right now. And the biggest thing is you have to hit on your draft pick. So if you're a franchise that struggles with drafting, it's probably going to make it 10 times harder.

patient with these coaches, but you also can't give them too much leeway because, I mean, How many you like two to seven win seasons can you take in a row before you're like, okay, this coach has got to go? don't know, man. It's tough. I agree with you. It it is very hard right now, and especially in college. like College, it's really, really important to have stability, especially with n NIL and transfer portal and all that. so It's definitely an interesting time.

If you are a team with a star running back or wide receiver, how are you not getting them the ball as much as possible every game? I do not understand it sometimes. Me and Sam actually talked yesterday during the Falcons game, and he was just questioning why the Falcons don't give Bijan the ball.

Every coach is smarter than everybody else on planet Earth, I guess. So it I don't know, man. It's really frustrating to watch as a fan, and especially as a person who plays fantasy. So I get what you're saying, man. It's really hard to watch, and it sucks as a fan, and like I said, as a fantasy player.

Speaker
But what can you do, man? I mean, it's their team. So fantasy is always a gamble. Gambling is a gamble. So it's tough, man. It sucks as a fan. I agree with you there.
