Stumbling on the Last Lap (Numbers 20:1-13) image

Stumbling on the Last Lap (Numbers 20:1-13)

The Apostle Paul wrote to his mentee, Timothy, these words in 2 Timothy 4:7 just a couple of months before he was martyred, “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

The writer of Hebrews urged his readers in Hebrews 12:1-2 to finish the race strong by keeping their eyes on Jesus and laying aside any weights or besetting sins that were hindering their run.

At 120 years of age, Moses was nearing the end of his incredible and commendable life’s race in Numbers 20:1-13, but unfortunately, like some other biblical heroes of the faith such as Samson or Solomon, he stumbled on what could be perceived as his last lap around the track. Yikes.

As I read through our text in Numbers, some possible stumbling blocks grabbed my attention. Oh, Moses didn’t trip over all of these by any means, and yet, each of these could hinder a man or a woman from finishing their race with excellence. Watch out for the following hurdles as you make run the course the Lord has for you in life.

Stumbling Block # 1 – Crises, 20:1-2

Stumbling Block # 2 – Complaints, 20:2-6

Stumbling Block # 3 – Compromise, 20:7-9, 11

Stumbling Block # 4 – Condescension, 20:10

Stumbling Block # 5 – Conceit, 20:10

Stumbling Block # 6 – Cynicism, 20:12

Stumbling Block # 7 – Carnality, 20:12-13

Welcome to Growing in Grace. I don't often preach from the book of Numbers, and so it's really rare for me to ever get any insights out of there. But I was going through there this week and read Numbers chapter 20, verses 1 through 13, and I thought, you know, there's something I need to remember.
00:01:04
Speaker
You know, the Apostle Paul wrote to his mentee, Timothy, these words in 2 Timothy 4, 7.

Encouragement from Paul and Hebrews

00:01:12
Speaker
He said, I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I've kept the faith. The writer of Hebrews urged his readers in Hebrews 12 verses 1 and 2 to finish the race strong by keeping their eyes on Jesus and laying aside any weights or besetting sins that were hindering their run.
00:01:34
Speaker
Well, I got to thinking about what I read in Numbers 20.

Moses' Stumbling Block in Numbers 20

00:01:38
Speaker
And I thought, you know, here's an example. It's sort of rare for this man, but here's an example when someone stumbled and they were on the last lap.
00:01:47
Speaker
have you ever seen that take place? I remember watching with Hara, my oldest daughter, Elisa, she used to run hurdles. And one day we were we were actually at the track and she was just sort of practicing.
00:02:01
Speaker
And I said, would you like for dad to run with you these hurdles? And she said, oh, that'd be awesome. Yeah, could you? So I look at the hurdle and it looked too high. I promise it looks so high. and I thought maybe at one time in my life I could have run alongside of her, but not at this age. you know and So ah I told her, well, maybe I'll stand at the end and I'll just yell as loud as I can.
00:02:25
Speaker
for you to do your best. Anyway, it worked out good that time, but there was a time when she was running hurdles and she didn't quite clear one. And it was pretty rough, the fall that she took.
00:02:37
Speaker
But at 120 years of age, Moses was nearing the end of his incredible and commendable life's race in Numbers 20 verses 1 through 13.

Crises as Life's Stumbling Blocks

00:02:49
Speaker
But unfortunately, like some other biblical heroes of the faith, take, for example, Samson or Solomon, Moses stumbled. He stumbled on what could be perceived as his last lap around the track.
00:03:05
Speaker
Man, what a what a bummer. So as I read through our text in Numbers, some possible stumbling blocks, or we could just call them hurdles. i mean, they don't have to be a stumbling block.
00:03:17
Speaker
They could be actually a stepping stone you know to growth, but they grabbed my attention. And so I thought, okay, Moses didn't trip over all of these. But they could be a problem for you, for me. And I want you to finish well.
00:03:34
Speaker
I want you to get to the end of your life and realize that you ran the race with excellence.

Running Life's Race with Integrity

00:03:41
Speaker
You gave it everything you had. Not that you were perfect, but you you did well.
00:03:46
Speaker
That's what I want. When I cross the finish line, I want to hear Jesus say, well done, good and faithful servant. But in order for us to do that, we have to watch out.

Moses' Disobedience in Numbers 20:1-13

00:03:56
Speaker
for the following hurdles that may you may encounter on the course that God has you running.
00:04:04
Speaker
So let me read through the text. It's kind of long. It'll be 13 verses, but ah you got to hear the whole thing in order to understand where we're going. Here's what it says in Numbers 20, verse 1.
00:04:16
Speaker
And the people of Israel, the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh. And Miriam died there and was buried there.
00:04:29
Speaker
Now there was no water for the congregation, and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, And the people quarreled with Moses and said, "'Would that we had perished "'when our brothers perished before the Lord. "'Why have you brought the assembly of the Lord "'into this wilderness, "'that we should die here, "'both we and our cattle?' Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to evil place
00:05:01
Speaker
it is no place for grain or figs or vines or pomegranates and there's no water to drink then moses and aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting and fell on their faces and the glory of the Lord appeared to them.

Consequences of Moses' Actions

00:05:22
Speaker
And the Lord spoke to Moses saying, take the staff and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron, your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water.
00:05:36
Speaker
So you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their cattle. And Moses took the staff from before the Lord as he commanded him.
00:05:49
Speaker
And then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock. And he said to them, "'Here now, you rebels, "'shall we bring water for you out of this rock?' And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice. And water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank and their livestock." And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, because you did not believe in me to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I've given them.
00:06:28
Speaker
These are the waters of Meribah, where the people of Israel quarreled with the Lord, and through them he showed himself holy. I don't know if you saw any possible hurdles that could trip us up as we're running through life, but I saw a few.

Hurdles: Crisis, Complaints, and Criticism

00:06:47
Speaker
And once again, they don't have to be hurdles or stumbling blocks, but they could be. And so let me just mention them real briefly today. You can go back to this passage later and spend a lot more time with it.
00:07:00
Speaker
But the first thing that could be a stumbling block in our lives would be a crisis. Or you could put it in the plural and say crises, because when I read verses one and two, I actually see that Moses and those around him were dealing with two crises.
00:07:19
Speaker
One was about loss and one was lack. The loss of a loved one is a natural part of this life. And yet, if you're not careful, if I'm not careful,
00:07:29
Speaker
It can disorient us. It can disorient us. And this chapter begins with the loss of Moses's sister, Miriam, and it ends with the loss of his brother, Aaron.
00:07:41
Speaker
So he actually lost two significant others in his life, two family members. Losing a family member is hard. But then in Numbers 20, verse 2, we see that, well, maybe some may not stumble over the loss of a family member, but what about the lack water?
00:08:01
Speaker
The lack of water. You see, they had seen God miraculously provide water already back in Exodus chapter 17, verses 5 and 6 and 7.
00:08:13
Speaker
And not only that, but there was another time even earlier than that time, when In Exodus 15, 22 to 27, the people came to a body of water, and they're in the desert, and they're thirsty, and it was bitter water, so they couldn't drink it.
00:08:28
Speaker
And so they cried out to Moses. So Moses cried out to God, and God said, cast that tree into the water. And when he did, it became sweet water. Well, it's possible that a crisis could really trip us up.
00:08:43
Speaker
I wonder if Abraham, he was running a steady race, obeying God in every detail, until he gets to Genesis 12, sort of toward the end of the chapter, ah famine strikes at Genesis 12, 10.
00:08:57
Speaker
And on his own, he didn't seek God about this. On his own, he decided, you know what? I think we'd be better off in Egypt because of this famine. And so he almost lost his wife with that quick, hasty decision.
00:09:11
Speaker
Don't forget to wait for God's guidance when you're going through a crisis. Well, a crisis could be a hurdle for sure, but there's another hurdle in verses two through six.
00:09:22
Speaker
I think complaints could also be there. You know, it's possible that one could jump high enough to clear the hurdle of a crisis and yet fall over the ensuing hurdle of complainers. Have you ever had complainers in your life?
00:09:38
Speaker
Maybe at work, maybe where you used to go to school, maybe in your relatives in your family somewhere. Oh my goodness, you won't believe. You know, the the children of Israel complained to Moses, get this,
00:09:53
Speaker
14 times, 14 times he heard them already. This is time number 13. So he's already heard these people murmur, it says in some translations, murmur, but he's heard them murmur or complain already 12 times.
00:10:11
Speaker
And so here we go again. He's thinking, oh no, now the the complaint is about

Leadership Challenges and Obedience

00:10:18
Speaker
water. There's no water. Of course it was legitimate, but there would be a way to phrase it differently, don't you think?
00:10:25
Speaker
Maybe they could have come to Moses and said, I think we better pray because we don't see any water around here. But instead it says they came against Moses and against Aaron.
00:10:37
Speaker
So they moved from sort of conflict into this complaining where they said, you know what we wish, Moses? We wish we'd have died back there in Egypt when our other brothers and forefathers had died and perished in Egypt. We wish we'd have died there.
00:10:53
Speaker
And so they're just kind of moaning and groaning. And it gets real personal because it moves into criticism whenever they say, why have you made us come out here? They actually said it to him twice,
00:11:06
Speaker
So thus far, Moses and Aaron, they're not falling over these hurdles. No, they responded in the right way. They went from the congregation and they were complaining and they go in to meet with the Lord.
00:11:20
Speaker
And you know what they did? They just cast all the burden upon the Lord and he showed them what to do. And I thought, that's great. So, so far they did well with a hurdle of a crisis.
00:11:33
Speaker
They did well with a hurdle of complaints. So next we come to what God told them they needed to do. You know, it's possible sometimes if you've ever watched someone running hurdles, it's possible that they completely clear that hurdle with that first leg.
00:11:51
Speaker
And yet the back foot could just, the toe maybe, barely clip that that ah hurdle. And so it might fall over and then they might fall down.
00:12:02
Speaker
But Moses, I'm telling you, he's been running the race so well. God told him exactly what he needed to do because he sought the Lord in verses seven and eight nine.
00:12:13
Speaker
And it just clearly says that's what Moses got up to do. And Moses took the staff from before the Lord as God had commanded him. So he's doing the right thing.
00:12:25
Speaker
But what happens is when he gets over there, instead of speaking to the rock like God said, he strikes the rock with his rod. Wait, where did that come from?
00:12:37
Speaker
Well, it could have come from his memory of Exodus 17, verses 6 and 7. There was another time that they were in the same identical situation.
00:12:48
Speaker
There was no water for the congregation. And so God tells Moses, Moses, take your rod and I want you to strike the rock. Strike it one time and out of that rock will come water.
00:13:00
Speaker
And so he struck it that one time.

Moses' Struggles with Anger

00:13:03
Speaker
And sure enough, just like God said, he miraculously brought water out of a rock. But this time God didn't say strike the rock.
00:13:12
Speaker
He said, speak to the rock. And I find it interesting that in 1 Corinthians 10 verses one through five, it refers back to all of these wilderness times.
00:13:24
Speaker
And it says that the rock that God brought the water out of, it was like a type. It was like a foreshadow of someone that was to come. Jesus, he's the rock.
00:13:37
Speaker
Jesus, he's the water of life. And so this is a biblical type that God is dealing with when he has it here. And so what happened is Moses cross-threaded on the typology, because the first time represented Jesus' death on the cross.
00:13:57
Speaker
When Moses struck the rock, he did exactly what God told him because Jesus was going to be put on the cross and he was going to die. But here's the deal.
00:14:08
Speaker
When he struck it the second time after having been told to speak to the rock, he messed up the typology. Because now Jesus doesn't have to die every day.
00:14:19
Speaker
Jesus doesn't have to die all over again continuously because we keep on sinning and blowing it. No, it says quite clearly in Hebrews 7, 27,
00:14:31
Speaker
in Hebrews 10.10, in Romans 6.10, that Jesus, he only had to die once for all time, for every person. He just had to die one time.
00:14:43
Speaker
But now here's Moses hitting the rock a second time and sort of like the type would be, well, Jesus may have suffered once, but he's gonna have to suffer again.
00:14:55
Speaker
So anyway, that's why it became a big deal to God. But there's something else that may have tripped up, Moses, that you might not have caught when I read it through the first time. Let me read it through again.
00:15:07
Speaker
Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, "'Here now, you rebels.'" Uh-oh. "'Here now, you rebels.'" You know, I think that Moses was looking down on the people.
00:15:25
Speaker
I think that Moses was dealing with a recurring sin that he dealt with in his life. It was like a struggle. Do you have any struggles in your life? I know I certainly do.
00:15:37
Speaker
Well, Chuck Swindoll believes that Moses had a besetting sin of anger. He had an anger problem. And so most days he kept it under wraps.
00:15:48
Speaker
But every now and then, Moses' anger would raise its ugly head. And that's what's happening here. You remember whenever Moses wasn't quite called yet, he he knew that he came from the Hebrew race, but Moses He didn't know that he was being called to be the deliverer to lead them out of Egypt.
00:16:08
Speaker
And so one day he sees an Egyptian mistreating and beating up on a Hebrew. And you know what it says that Moses did? Out of anger, he killed the Egyptian and he hides his body in the sand.
00:16:20
Speaker
Well, it's hard to keep it a secret sometimes when we get angry and we let our actions get out of control. And so what happens is there were Egyptians who must have seen him do that. So later they said, are you going to kill us like you kill the other Egyptian?
00:16:35
Speaker
And so Moses, that's when he said, I got to get out of Dodge. So he got out of there and he left. But just think, his anger got the best of him. Well, the same thing happened when he kept on telling Pharaoh, let the people go.
00:16:50
Speaker
And Pharaoh said no. So God would send a plague and Moses would announce the plague. So already they've gone through nine plagues. And still Pharaoh is saying no, he's being stubborn.
00:17:03
Speaker
You ever get frustrated when somebody's being stubborn? Well, in Exodus 11, 8, it's so challenging that it says that Moses went out. When he pronounced the 10th plague, he went out.
00:17:15
Speaker
It says in the Bible, he went out in hot anger. Moses was angry in Exodus 11, 8. And so he told ah Pharaoh,
00:17:27
Speaker
The next ah plague is going to be terrible because it means the firstborn of all of Egypt is going to die in every family. If they don't have this blood over the lentils, of course, that's what you know God told Moses to do for the Jewish people was put the blood of the lamb over the doorposts so that they would be spared from the death angel.
00:17:51
Speaker
But when Moses came down with the Ten Commandments, do you remember what happened? He got down there and they were worshiping a golden calf. I mean, they were getting into idolatry. It got Moses so mad.
00:18:05
Speaker
It says he burned hot with anger. He throws the the stone tablets down and then makes the people drink the powdery stone tablets that were the Ten Commandments out of the

Pride and Doubt in Spiritual Life

00:18:19
Speaker
stream.
00:18:20
Speaker
And he makes them drink it out of there. He's like, drink that. you know this is You're disobeying what the Lord wanted. And so anyway, my point is, this is not the first time. And so once again, here he is, he's saying in Numbers 20, verse 10, you rebels.
00:18:37
Speaker
Maybe it's like anger was beginning to hijack his attitude. And so once he gets a hold of your attitude, man, it's gonna get a hold of your actions.
00:18:48
Speaker
That's why James says in James 1, 19 and 20, sometimes you should read those two verses. I have to read them often to get it. you know i should He says, i should be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to do something else. You know what the third one is?
00:19:07
Speaker
Slow to anger. Man, I'm not always slow to anger. ah need to be, and I'm growing in that direction, but man, I got i got a long way to go. Well, I think that if we're not careful, anger or looking down on others in condescension, it can be a stumbling block for us.
00:19:25
Speaker
But let's move to a fifth one. I think there was another hurdle there that day. Maybe it was conceit. Pride can slip in really easily, you know. Moses knew that he and Aaron were unable to draw water out of a rock. I mean, who can do that?
00:19:41
Speaker
I can't draw water out rock. Can you? Well, he knew that that was something only God would have to do. So why did he pretend that he and Aaron could do it?
00:19:52
Speaker
I think pride always exaggerates man's ability. Here's what it says. Moses says to them after he calls them rebels, shall we bring water for you out of this rock?
00:20:06
Speaker
Can't you hear it Do you remember how the devil became the devil? It's kind of ah spooky passage to read. There's actually two of them. If you want to read it in surround sound, sometime read Isaiah 14, verses 12 through 17, and then read what tells is that one verses twelve through nineteen but what it tells us is that at one time The devil or Satan, he was like this incredible cherub.
00:20:33
Speaker
I mean, he was in in the heavenly places. He was doing good things, but then he messed up. You know what messed him up? The Lord calls it out in Ezekiel 28, 17. It says, your heart was proud.
00:20:47
Speaker
You see, Satan began to say in Isaiah 14, verses 12 through 17, five times he said, I will, I will. And the last time he goes on record saying, I will, before God cast him out of heaven down to this earth, Satan said, I will make myself like the most high.
00:21:07
Speaker
Wow, that's kind of like about the the biggest expression of pride I've ever heard in my life. Somebody feel like I could do what God's doing. No wonder scripture tells us 60 times in the Old Testament and 20 times in the New Testament that instead of being prideful, we should be humble.
00:21:28
Speaker
What does God expect from a man but to do do justly and to walk humbly with his God? 1 Peter 5.5 says that God opposes the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.
00:21:42
Speaker
So really, every day, you and I have this choice that we can make. If we want to get in a fight with God, he says he opposes the one that's proudful. So if you want to get in a fight with God, just bow up.
00:21:55
Speaker
just Just act like you know you're in charge and not God. But if you want God's favor rather than a fight, then God says, you know what I do? I give grace to the humble.
00:22:07
Speaker
So I think it's better for us to have a humble attitude rather than a prideful one. Well, there's another one here. When the Lord confronts Moses and Aaron, he says, because you did not believe in me,
00:22:21
Speaker
Isn't that amazing? I mean, all that Moses saw and all that, but only God could see down in his heart. But it's interesting that the first vice that God identifies was only was one that only he could have seen.
00:22:36
Speaker
And that was the inward vice of doubt. doubt and unbelief. It's almost like a deja vu moment though, because wasn't it at Kadesh where they're standing here in Numbers 20?
00:22:52
Speaker
Wasn't it at that very location that the 12 spies that were sent in there, that they had not believed God, they had doubted him? And here we go again.
00:23:03
Speaker
It's like we're back on the same old merry-go-round. You know, Hebrews 3.12 and Hebrews 3.19 both remind us that were they messed up in the days of Moses?
00:23:15
Speaker
Not Moses. I mean, the first time it was the people, those 12 spies, 10 of those guys didn't believe God, two did, but it was and an unbelieving heart.
00:23:28
Speaker
It says they were unable to enter the promised land because of unbelief.

Moses' Leadership Loss and Consequences

00:23:34
Speaker
And so I couldn't help but think, you know, sometimes I think cynicism, sort of doubting, being skeptical and stuff like that, maybe that's a hurdle that someone might get off track and actually stumble right at the end of your life when you are to be running your best pace and able to cross that finish line.
00:23:57
Speaker
But I suppose that the the last one, the the stumbling block or the hurdle of carnality, this is the one that I'm so surprised with Moses doing.
00:24:09
Speaker
He says that you did not uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel. Therefore, you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I've given them, where the people of Israel quarreled with the Lord and through them, he showed himself holy.
00:24:25
Speaker
So God had to do it because Moses didn't did it really show them what God was like very well in this one place. Of course, he did a lot of great things.
00:24:36
Speaker
i'm not I'm not trying to pick on Moses. I've got my own problems without picking on him. But the thing I want you to see, though, is God wasn't happy about this. He was displeased.
00:24:47
Speaker
As a matter of fact, his he was so displeased, he outlines what this cost. There were some things that Moses lost that day. Because he was in the flesh, he was being carnal rather than trying to stay humble before God and show them, you know what? God is holy and we need to do things his way.
00:25:08
Speaker
So what was it he lost? Three things. One thing he lost was he distorted his testimony of God's holiness. God calls him out on it. He said, you did not uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel.
00:25:26
Speaker
Therefore, you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I've given them. So how sad that Moses went through everything that he had done. i mean, they've been wandering in the wilderness for 40 years.
00:25:38
Speaker
And so all of that, and Moses lost his temper. He gets in the flesh. And now God says, you know what? you didn't You didn't treat me as holy. I told you to speak to the rock.
00:25:50
Speaker
You smote it two times. You struck it as hard as you can with that rock two times. I'm not pleased with this, Moses. This is gonna cost you, Moses, because you distorted the testimony of what kind of God I am.
00:26:06
Speaker
But also notice that it damaged God's destiny for Moses' is usefulness. Do you think if I'm obeying God, that God's going to use me more than if I disobey God, if I'm chronically disobeying God?
00:26:22
Speaker
Of course, all of us are sinners. All of us fall short. There's no doubt about it. But are we moving in the right direction? Do we want to obey him? Do we want to say, God, i want my life to count for you and for your kingdom, for your glory, your honor. You made me, God.

Reflections on Anger and God's Faithfulness

00:26:41
Speaker
And so I want you to use me like you would pick up an instrument and use it. And so it damaged that. And so whenever it damaged that, just think about what happened then.
00:26:53
Speaker
You know, God wanted him to lead the people into the promised land. But because Moses lost his temper there, got in the flesh, God says, nope, I'm not going to be able to use you to be the leader. You're going to have to look to Joshua to do that.
00:27:10
Speaker
Well, there was a third thing he lost. And that is, I think sometimes it detours the the railway of God's faithfulness. The railway of God's faithfulness.
00:27:20
Speaker
You know, it's like, Does my my faithlessness, does that cause God's faithfulness not to happen?
00:27:31
Speaker
It doesn't to the people. Did you catch what happened? I mean, you would think that God would say, okay, Moses, because you st struck the rock, I'm not going to give the people water out of the rock.
00:27:43
Speaker
But instead, did you see what happened? Even though Moses disobeyed, God knew that that congregation, those people, they need water desperately.
