Introduction and Match Preview

Global Sports Podcast Network
Alright lads, lasses and everybody in between, you are listening to the Daily Newcastle Podcast, your one-stop shop for all things black and white. I'm proud to be part of the Global Sports Podcast Network.
00:00:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now I do have to apologise that this episode hasn't gone up at the usual time. and We've had a few technical issues with last night's recording. ah So yours truly has decided to whack on the black and white superhero cape and save the day like John Garcia in the first half on Thursday.
00:00:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Too soon? Yeah, probably, to be honest. for you For those of you that don't know, I'm Michael Grahamslaw and today we're diving into a full preview of Newcastle United's upcoming clash with Bournemouth.
00:00:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, to start off... We're back to Premier League action over the weekend, Champions League in midweek, and on paper it is weaker opposition, but in reality we have struggled so much against Bournemouth in recent years.
00:01:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Eddie Howe returns to his former club once again, um but it's a club that knows him better than he knows them, ah unfortunately, or well at least when you base it off recent results.
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's very different narratives of both sides going into the game. I think Newcastle, it's one of, oh, they haven't got alex Alexander Ezek, so they're going to underperform. And with one win in five um or four, um it is kind of looking that way to the the neutral eye.
00:01:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
While for Bournemouth, it's one of those where they lost the opening day to ah Liverpool. They lost in the the cup to Brentford. um Other than that, three wins and they've looked very, very solid.
00:01:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's it's definitely going to be ah an interesting clash. I'm going to start off with my predicted 11. ah for

Newcastle Line-up Changes

00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle. And I do think there will be changes from the side that lost to Barcelona.
00:02:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, we're going to have Nick Pope in goal. There will be a day where Aaron Ramsdale gets his chance, um but I don't think it's going to be today. Or tomorrow, should I say.
00:02:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think we're at the stage of the season where we need to rotate after Champions League games either. But the intensity of Bournemouth is probably going to force Eddie Howe into some, at least...
00:02:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
thoughts about changes than what's necessary at the back uh we know fabian shares out with a concussion um so the immediate thought there is probably to throw sven botman into into the mix but eddie howe does like to play with left-footed center back and a right-footed center back and then dan bern and sven botman will both be left-footed so by that logic and the fact that malik ciao came on against barcelona We might see Malik Chow in there alongside Dan Byrne as a sort of a reward for the impressive cameo we saw in midweek.
00:03:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
As for the midfield, it will probably stay the same. Bruno Gamares, Sandro Tonali, Joe Linton. um You'd hope they have better luck against Tyler Adams and Alex Scott than they did against Pedri and Frankie de Jong.
00:03:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But stranger things have

Midfield and Attack Analysis

00:03:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
happened. And to be fair, that midfield too is the best in the world, in my opinion. So, you know, there's not too much wrong with getting it, well, to losing an out to those two. But Alex Scott and Tyler Adams...
00:03:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both great players, very underrated. So it'll be interesting to see how we do a three against the two, obviously with Tavernier dropping in there as well to make it three for Bournemouth.
00:03:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then up front is where the the big questions do have to be asked. Out of form, Harvey Barnes, does Nick Voltemada come straight back into the side? I believe so.
00:04:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think there's a world where he doesn't play. um after being involved in our last two goals. The first against Wolves is the goal and then he plays a delightful little first-time flick ah in the goal against Barcelona, which I have to say, looking back, it's really understated how good that goal is.
00:04:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It was quite late at night. uh it was still very happy about it but was one of those we'd sort of resigned ourselves to defeat and it was and honestly it meant just as much as a tap in on the line um but when you look back it was actually a fantastic goal um and then on the right hand side do you reward anthony alanga with the the good performance against barcelona or do you reward jake and murphy for getting two assists in two games And when you consider we've only can we've only scored four goals in four games, I think it has to be Jacob Murphy. So I do think it'll be Barnes, Vultimada and Jacob Murphy.
00:04:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can't say I really want to see that. um But in a game with this intensity, I'd probably like to see Hall come in for Trippier. Tino moving to the right, the Hall on the left.
00:05:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that would leave him against Antoine Semenyo.

Bournemouth's Strategy vs Newcastle's Defense

00:05:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's a horrible first game back. um I think if he was going to start them, the but the perfect game to do that would have been Wolves if we already had a win on the board.
00:05:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I would like to have seen Joe Linton On the left-hand side, Lewis Miley playing more of a central position. And I'm not saying that because Harvey Barnes, I'm not of the opinion that some Newcastle fans of, of oh, he should never play in black and white again, which is, if that's what you think, and give your head a wobble, because there is a good player in there.
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um He's just a bit out of form. I think he just needs to be taken out of the spotlight. few bad performances at the start the season. And while he's finishing was the shining light last year, this year it's been quite poor.
00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think him and Alanga coming off the bench give Newcastle a completely different approach for the last 30 minutes. And it'll be similar to Barcelona on Thursday, where if we're still in the game with 20 minutes to go, we'll be very happy.
00:06:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah why i say ah for If we're not behind with 20 minutes to go, we'll be very happy because Bournemouth do tend to do a number on us. um Although our record Bournemouth is actually a little bit better than you might think.
00:06:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But the game plan will be substantially different, um even though the end results, you know we'd be happy still being in it, a level with 20 minutes to go still. We'll have more possession, significantly more than we had against Barcelona, um even though we're playing away from home.
00:06:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bournemouth are excellent at what they do, and that is counter-attacking, direct style of play. And it's brilliant when you actually watch it in full flow. The one battle that I'm really interested to see, and this is the reason I was saying I would like to see Joe Linton on that left-hand side instead, is Bournemouth's makeshift right-back James Hill.
00:06:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Originally a centre-back, having to play out a position. Hasn't done bad any start so far. He's had a couple of sub-appearances as well. um I don't really count the cup game against Brentford, but in the Premier League, he's looked decent.
00:07:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And whoever plays on that of left wing has to put the youngster under pressure. And if he deals with it, then go to a different plan. But immediately from the off, put the young new lad under pressure.
00:07:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Joe Linton's the best player to do that personally. As a young player, seeing Joe Linton up against you, and let's be honest, probably having a shoulder or an arm as he tries to fend him off of someone that strong that early in the game,
00:07:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's something that will strike fear into a defender whether they like to say so or not. um And then once he's worn out from that battle, bring on Harvey Barnes, who will cut inside and try and cut in and likely get the better of a worn-out fullback.
00:07:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, one thing that's surprised me quite a lot in the last few games is the fact that people have been criticising set-pieces. um you have to remember that we've scored two out of our four goals this season have come from set pieces.
00:08:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
One has been a cross into the box. um One of the two that haven't been, should I say. One has been a cross into the box from Jacob Murphy ah that's met the head of Nick Vultima.
00:08:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then the other was an excellent move against Barcelona, which again, crossed in by Jacob Murphy. um So it's one of those where us putting the ball in the box and set pieces are probably the only ways we're getting goals, it feels like, at the moment.
00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But that needs to change. um You've got to remember, we only scored 12 set pieces in the entirety of... Actually, I imagine it's 13, actually, with the goal in the cup final.
00:08:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
We only scored 12 in the league in the entirety of last season. We've got a sixth of that after three or four games. So it's it's one of those where you keep that up.
00:08:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah you're getting a lot more goals from those situations. And i go don't get wrong, we're not exactly an Arsenal or a Chelsea. You already have five and six. That's where we want to be. But it certainly hasn't been as bad as what I've seen some

Set-Piece Execution and Critique

00:09:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
people saying.
00:09:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
um What I will say, and this is where I think the frustration comes from, is that we have significantly more corners that just end up doing nothing. And it's like, pass out to Gordon or pass out to the winger.
00:09:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
and then hope they get a cross in, and it then hits the first man or it goes over. And it's it's different to hitting the first man directly from a corner, which is what we've seen oh so many times ah in recent years as Newcastle fans. But it is a lot more frustrating when you take a short corner and it doesn't result to anything because you're sitting there thinking, we've got players in there who are brilliant in the air,
00:09:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, just look at Dan Byrne in the cup final. I'm aware that's not usually the end result when Dan Byrne gets a header on the ball. um But you look at some you look at some of the goals we scored from corners over the recent years, it is a strong point for us. So I think it's it's more frustrating when we take it short and it doesn't really you result in anything. um it's goodnna But now what I will say, and Martin Mark, he's come in.
00:10:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's pretty new to the role for us. Players are new to working with them. It's going to take a bit of time to get into the groove ah for Martin Mark, which is a brilliant name for a set-piece coach, by the way.
00:10:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've already made jokes in the pod, so i will refrain from doing that again. But if you've been listening the to us for a while, talking about getting into the groove, you'll know exactly what is coming up next.
00:10:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that is Bionique.

Key Bournemouth Players to Watch

00:11:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so in this part, i want to look at some key players going at the game, do a bit more of an analysis on the Bournemouth side. We all know what to expect from Newcastle United on a Newcastle United pod. um So basically, you look at that Bournemouth side, it's easy to start with Antoine Semenyo, but I'm actually going to start with a player who has been a bit of an unsung hero, in my opinion, and will be it'll be a massive clash against Nick Vultomata.
00:11:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
uh on sunday and that is marco senesi before zabani and dean huysen got uh put into the team he was that rock and if you remember in the 1-1 draw with bournemouth a few years ago it was actually senesi that scored so he does have that attacking threat as well it was a huge surprise to me when he got dropped um but then when you saw how good the two replacements were i mean both of them have been sold to psg and real madrid for a combined total of 120 odd million, um which is enough to buy you an Alexander-Ezac these days, which is, to be honest, I think I'd rather have the two really solid centre-backs, but not bad at all when you consider the comparison.
00:12:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Sinesse has turned what should have been a really shaky Bournemouth defence into quite a solid one. and He's a real leader at the back, and we saw that in his time in the Eredivisie.
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
So maybe it's not as much of a surprise as it should be. But what is a surprise this season is that Justin Clivert hasn't really been starting games for Bournemouth. It's been David Brooks on ah the wing and then Marcus Tavernier has been playing in that number 10 role. And to be honest...
00:13:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I like David Brooks. I like Marcus Tavernier, particularly when you consider the for the um the latter is a former smoggy. So I like him. He's a good player.
00:13:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's one of those, if it remains the case that those two play instead of Klaivert on Sunday, I will be relieved because that 4-1 at St. James' Park...
00:13:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I still have nightmares about it, to be honest. um I probably will tonight. So hopefully he doesn't play. ah But both Brooks and Tavernier are good players in their own right and definitely shouldn't be underestimated, particularly with their quality and on the ball.
00:13:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then the main man, as I mentioned earlier, is going to be Semenyo. think you just have to watch him play to understand why we were will want, well, Bournemouth wanted 75 million for him.
00:13:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we were willing to pay 55, 60, little bit more than we did with Alanga. um But to be honest, 75 million is probably about right. He'll be the main threat against us, but...
00:14:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I have to say, and I know I said I'd potentially start Lewis Hall on the left-hand side, but the way that Tino Livramento has started the season, that's going to be a fantastic battle. And I'm not saying I'd be confident with Tino handling Semenyo, but I think he's probably the best player in the team to do that.

Defensive Adjustments and Match Predictions

00:14:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So little bit more confident there than what I'd maybe normally be. But Lewis Hall, if he comes in as well, has battled some brilliant right-wingers and come out on top.
00:14:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bukayo Saka, Mo Salah, just to name a few. um Our weakness, I think, is Bournemouth's strength on the same matter.
00:14:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
think Semenyo, Brooks, Tavernier, Evan Nielsen, who I haven't mentioned yet, They're excellent on the counter-attack. um I know they've lost Diego Tora, who should have scored the winner in this fixture last year.
00:14:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and there' also It looks like Clive will just come off the bench. But their counter-attack, and although those players don't sound terrifying, they they very much can be, and they very much are when you watch Bournemouth play.
00:15:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think the the fact that Fabian Scher won't be playing, might actually be something that benefits Newcastle in this particular fixture.
00:15:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or maybe I'm just trying to look at the positives of the scenario because Fabian Scher is a brilliant defender. But mali if Malik Chau comes in, I don't know if he's as good of a defender as Fabian Scher, but he's certainly quicker, which is going to help with those transitions on the counter-attack.
00:15:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Sven Botman, I mean, we call him the Rolls-Royce for a reason. He is also a little bit quicker than Fabian Scher, so he's going to be less prone to those counter-attacks. And to be honest, on his day, Sven Botman's a great defender.
00:15:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
One of the, certainly the best we have, I think, on his day. um But he's just so injury prone. I think if those two stay fit, Malik Tiao and Sven Botman, I think by the end of the campaign, those two will be our starting centre-backs.
00:16:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it could be that both start this weekend. um Maybe Dan Byrne he'll want to give a little bit of a rest to, or he'll rotate them knowing that Bournemouth play with such high pace and intensity and there's not going to be too many balls floated into the box.
00:16:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So maybe, just maybe, we see those two instead of Dan Byrne, Fabian Scherr, give Byrne a little bit of a rest and maybe bring them on later in the game if we're leading 1-0.
00:16:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because if we're leading 1-0 and he's there in the box, I'm very confident that every ball that comes in is just going to be walloped out. um But yeah, it it would be harsh to drop Bern. I don't think it'd be something that would be actually a dropping.
00:16:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
It would just be a tactical change and Dan Bern would come straight back in um for Arsenal. And then i think it's hard to say exactly where the game is going to be won and lost. um It's probably going to be in midfield, I would say, um with our turnovers.
00:17:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think if we have the same energy we had against Barcelona... which we're not going to. and But if we have half the energy we had then, we should be able to press very well and cause a lot of problems at the start the game.
00:17:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bournemouth, when they win the ball in midfield through typically Adams, they can transition so quickly. And I think turnovers are going to be the name of the game. for both teams and quite often it's going to be the team that gets it right are the ones that were win the game i think when we lost to bournemouth 4-1 they were so quick in transition that every time we got the ball they pressed on us quite like really quickly we couldn't get our passes away and in transition the ball was going to players who you don't associate with passing
00:17:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they were playing killer balls just straight through the middle of us. And it was really impressive. um We are the more physical team. I think you saw that in the one goal that we scored against them at St. James'. But we you see that very, very often in these kind of games.
00:18:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll win a lot of the first balls. but it's going to be whoever can pick up those second balls and find their players in space more frequently that end up being the winning team.

Tactics and Scoring Challenges

00:18:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And when I say out loud, it sounds a bit Michael Owen-esque, but it is going to be the case. Whoever's quicker in reacting to those loose balls will probably end up being the winner. um It could be a very...
00:18:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
for a lack of better phrase, balls to the wall, end-to-end kind of game. And I'm very excited for it, if I'm honest. um If I go in if I'm trying to give a full prediction, which I probably should, um I am going to go with 1-1 draw.
00:18:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do think our record at Bournemouth, is good, but under Eddie Howe, I think the best... of Well, we might beat them once or twice, but and we've we tend to draw more often than not. um We'll frustrate them, I think, by causing a few problems on our own, holding up the ball a little bit, more in the back in defence, not allowing those quick transitions where we can.
00:19:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And we might even play ah different style where we just hoof it up to Nick Vultomar at some point and see what sticks around him. um I don't like to see us play that way.
00:19:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
But when you've got a team so quick in transition, sometimes the best way to to nullify them is just by not having your full bar, your defence, blistering forward and just leaving four or five there at the back, always ready, um particularly in these away games.
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not a style of play I'd like to see us play because I like to see us try and win every game. um And I think we saw against Barcelona, you know, we will go head-to-head with the best in the world and we'll at least try if we don't, even if we don't win.
00:20:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think Bournemouth will score first. um They'll start the game full of energy as they always do. um The big issue for me is where goals are going to come from from Newcastle because if Nick Vultemar doesn't score...
00:20:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
It looks very unlikely that other players are going to step up. Barnes doesn't look like he can put the ball in the back of the net at the moment. Jagan Murphy's finishing is a little bit off. um To be honest, his crossing is...
00:20:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's decent. ah There's always that one cross in the game that's perfect. And if the other 10 are terrible, then yeah at least one of them is perfect. um But he doesn't score. He's not going score a lot of goals, I don't think, this season.
00:20:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um The combination, him and Isaac, was beautiful, to be honest. And it's going to take a while for that sort of repertoire, or not even the right word,
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
rapport to be created with Volta Marder, Wissa, whoever it is. So yeah, it's going to be one that I think we're going to have a bit of a difficult season in regards to scoring goals, but we look a lot better defensively.
00:21:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But as I mentioned, I think Bournemouth will score and start the game full of energy, will pull the game back round half time, maybe early in the second half. And then you're going to see the last 30 minutes, maybe last 20 minutes, where you just have end-to-end counter-attacking football. Barnes and Alanga for Newcastle.
00:21:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Potentially, um I'd like to see both of them come off the bench. Maybe Barnes starts. but particularly Alanga. um o Bournemouth have got some brilliant players on the bench as well, a good counter-attack style.
00:21:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they'll get the better of us in regards to that end-to-end battle, but I don't think they'll be able to break us down. I don't think there'll be too many clear-cut opportunities, and because of that, I think it is going to be a draw.
00:22:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I want to hear from you. Who starts on the wings? Would you keep a langer in the 11? Who starts at the back? Is it Dan Byrne keeping his place alongside Malik Chow? Would you play Botman or Byrne as two left-sided centre-backs?
