Speaker: This is a Muck Stain Productions Podcast.

Speaker: Hello homies and trainers and welcome to Unknown Radio, your Mugstain production Pokemon talk show where we take a peek at every Pokemon. I'm Claudia and I'm here with my co -host and partner in Crime Catherine. Hello, I'm Catherine. While Claudia brings us the facts, I try and bring the positives. And you succeed, my friend. Thank you. Thank you.

Speaker: this week we're getting back on track and we're doing number 13 and number 14 in the pokedex but we'll start with 13 and this is our little boy Weedle. Weedle Weedle Weedle Weedle is a bug poison type and do you have any idea what his tagline is? Oh the bug pokemon. I mean he's doing really crap. You are actually really really close.

Speaker: What is it? The hairy bug, Pokemon. The hairy bug. How is it hair? Oh, do you know what? Go on, tell me more. How is this guy hairy? I don't know because there's no indication on hair in any of his Pokemon centuries. He looks like... So that's the next question, I know. But it's like a bloody caterpillar with a massive... It's like a maggot -y thing, but with a massive point.

Speaker: massive pointy dong on his head. Yeah, why is it on his head and not his tail? He does have one on his tail too. So he's a small inset like Pokemon appearing as a brown captor pillar with large stingers on both its rear and its head. So he's double ended? He's a... I'm not gonna say. He's a double ended... will -do. Will -we -do. Weedle? Weedle? What's Weedle?

Speaker: I was trying to make a pun on his name in that photo. Yeah, no, no, I'm with you. I'm with you. So much like the Caterpie, this guy is a foot long and weighs 7 .1 pounds. So it's just a baby. It's just a baby, but a very big bug, but a normal kind of small size human baby.

Speaker: Yeah, see, that's what I can't get over. Imagine living in the Pokémon universe and your bugs being a foot long. What the fuck? I hate bugs, so this would be the worst for me. Oh my god. Imagine leaving your window open in the summer. Oh my god. Your window seals would be broken. Imagine just taking a nap or going camping and then you wake up and one of these is just crawling up your bare arm.

Speaker: That's made me feel funny. I don't like it. That gave you the funny feelings. That gave me the funnies. I didn't like it. So his name is a combination of worm and needle.

Speaker: Yeah, it makes sense. And he appears to be based on a wasp or bee larvae. They say that the points on his head and tail are just based on needles or stingers. Yeah, seems legit. And he only lives one to two years, so very reminiscent of his cousin, the cataphy. I don't know if they're related, but to me, they are. Do you also think all bugs are related?

Speaker: that's deep bro because i see what you mean like weedles and catapies kind of related but like billy drills and butter frees they're not they're not the same right they go off in two different tangents but yeah i guess they exist in the same place and maybe they have similar evolutionary if we're going to go way deep back into like legends arceus era

Speaker: That's too deep for me. What even is life, bruh? Where did they come from? How were they made? What came first? The egg. The egg. Yeah, probably the egg. So we'll go into its characteristics a little bit. So the Weedle sense of smell is excellent with its large, actually very cute reddish pink nose.

Speaker: It can sniff out leaves it likes the best. And eating leaves, much like the Caterpie, helps it prepare for evolution. Cute. So like, in real life, it's got to get fat to get into its cocoon. Yeah. Love fat.

Speaker: He has that big, large stinger on its head and then the stinger, according to the Pokedex, measures around two inches and is very toxic. Oh, like to humans or to pokies. I'm assuming to both. Oh, that's interesting. Yeah, because I'm assuming poisons poison. Well, yeah, but not all poison, like what's poisonous for an animal isn't always poisonous for a human.

Speaker: Right, so maybe this could kill a Pidgey, but might just be a little bit of an irritant for a human. Yeah, okay. I can deal with that. Right. I have to strategy with Weedle questions. Questions? I have questions. So this guy is a little bit more on the offensive side, whereas the Caterpie was all about just trying to avoid confrontation. Yeah.

Speaker: This guy's got a little spice. A little bit of spice. A little bit of spicy pizaeas. Because of the poison, the Pokedex also states that the Weedle is brightly colored to ward off potential predators rather than scare them away, a la the Caterpie. It's this weird orangey -brown color.

Speaker: Yet again, the shiny version is yellow and pink. Oh, get out. It's really cute. I'm on it. It's like a very vibrant yellow and like a baby pink. I love it. It's cute. Yeah. Yeah. So cute. I like the Weedle when it's shiny. Any other Weedle can get in the bin. And I've also just seen shiny Beaudron and that's disgusting. What is that?

Speaker: Yeah, they kind of go off from this. The Weedle is just top tier, I think. Yeah. So a little bit about how this guy behaves. So like we said, the brightly colored bodies of these Pokémon are intended to ward off potential predators who would not enjoy a mouthful of toxins. They also have their sharp sense of smell using their nose -like proboses. I don't know what that is.

Speaker: I couldn't tell you, mate. It's too sciency for me. They use that to sense which leaves us safe to consume. So not only what they like best, but what's safe. Yeah.

Speaker: which is smart and some we don't even develop preferences for certain leaves and they are ferocious eaters and like the Caterpie, they consume their weight in leaves daily. Like the Caterpillar song. Exactly like the Caterpillar song. Yes, back to the Caterpillar song because it's bloody good. Just like that.

Speaker: Just like its cousins, they can be found in temperate forests and they usually hide in the grass and bushes and hides under the leaves that it eats. So this guy just hides with his little stinger poking out waiting for someone to step on him. That sounds like a dream. That's essentially all about him. I was a little bit disappointed because he looks like a maggot to me. So I thought it would eat dead things.

Speaker: No, I just think it's just one of those Pokémon that you have to catch if you want its final form. If you think its final form is worth going through the pain of bringing up a Weedle. Yeah, I prefer him to Caterpie, I think. Yeah, see, I don't. Well, you have the Caterpie, I'll have the Weedle. Yeah, but again,

Speaker: I don't prefer Weedle to Caterpie, but the idea of having a Beedrill is just enough. Yeah, I hate them. I hate them. So we'll step it up towards our Beedrill and we will go ahead and evolve our little guy into number 14 in the Pokedex, Cocoona. Cocoona! Who, again, is a bug poison type. A cocoon, Pokémon! Bang on.

Speaker: Yes! I finally got one! You said you were going to be really upset if it wasn't the cocoon mocha one. Oh yeah. So this guy is two foot tall. Okay. So just a little bit bigger and weighs 22 pounds which is 10 pounds. Fucking hell. He's pretty heft. He's really gone up from what like 2k to 10. Yeah. That's mad. So what does this little guy look like?

Speaker: So to me, he looks like a really triangular leaf. Yes, he does. Yeah. He's definitely more leafy looking than the Metapod. Yeah. And this guy's yellow, so that makes no sense. What? Like the the Metapod was green, but we thought he looked like a rock.

Speaker: This guy's yellow and they're like, it's a leaf. Yeah, but he looks like a leaf. I can't explain it. Like, yeah.

Speaker: He does. So he's a yellow insect, cocoon -like Pokemon with a dome -shaped head, black triangular eyes, and then those glowing white pupils. And then interestingly, in the Pokemon red and blue versions in the game, the cocoona actually has arm -like limbs that were kind of wrapped around its own body. But after that, it wasn't seen again. So it was like it was hugging itself. Yeah, I'm not surprised. That's really fucking weird.

Speaker: What? I know. You should look it up sometime. I'm trying. You do it in Google. Yeah, look it's the red games. Yeah. Yeah, red and blue. Cocoona sprite. Yeah, no. Oh, God, the graphics back then. What time to be alive? All pixels. Oh my God. Yeah, that's weird.

Speaker: I remember them now. Yeah. They're almost like pincers. Mm -hmm. Like the cocoona was just a bee drool who was holding itself. Yes. I remember that. Bringing back memories. That's so weird. Yeah. So the regular colour's yellow and then the shiny version is like a neon green. Very vibrant neon green. Very leaf -like. Nice. Interesting.

Speaker: So the name of this guy is just a mix up of the word cocoon. Dreaming big on this one. Wow. So the cocoon is based on a literal cocoon, specifically the casing for the pupa of bees or wasps in which they begin to metamorphosize. And then some of the Pokedex entries state that

Speaker: The kakuna can heat up during evolution, which is possibly a reference on how Japanese honeybees can create heat when they bundle all together. That's interesting. Which is kind of like a defense mechanism to keep the hive nice and warm during the winter. So I'd be horrified if I came across one of these and it was warm. I'd be horrified if I came across one full stop.

Speaker: I'm not good with slushy goo inside of there. Oh God. Can you knock this one over? You can't knock this one over now. You can't. Oh, thank God for that. This one's mine. That was horrific. So the lifespan of this guy is two to three years. So you can assume it's been the Weedle for two years. So it has this like one year incubation cycle as it goes through metamorphosis. Love that. Yep.

Speaker: So a little bit about this guy, he seeks out trees, branches, or piles of leaves to hide in. When the weed will evolve into the cocoona, their ability to move becomes severely restricted and they can only inch around very slowly. In my head, I'm just thinking of it like shuffling, stood upright.

Speaker: At least these guys move. At least these guys can be knocked over. That's still upsetting me. Like, I know it shouldn't, but it really is. Yeah, sometimes they can even be seen hanging from tree branches. Yeah, a bit like, have you ever seen a wasp make its nest? So yeah, they will kind of look like a two foot wasp nest. Yeah. Just kind of wiggling. Yeah, no, that sounds horrendous, actually.

Speaker: I would love to see one of these just inching around. I would not. Just to see what it looks like. It would be nightmare fuel. It's a two foot weird pile of yellow. Yeah. Just using those weird little plates on its body just to inch around. Honestly, yeah. Like a roly poly bug. Oh, wait, do you mean a wood louse? Yeah. What? A wood louse?

Speaker: I haven't seen a woodlouse in so long. The last one I saw was in Bugs Life, so. Well, you should have said, and I would have found your woodlouse when you came to visit in England. Just to look at it. We could have gone on a woodlouse hunt. Yeah, what the fuck? Broly -poly, but get out, man. So the cocoona can only learn hard and naturally, but when it is provoked, they also extend poison barbs from their tips to defend themselves.

Speaker: Okay. So even though they try to conserve as much energy as possible for evolution, they will exert energy to unsheathe their bobs when absolutely necessary. Unsheath their bobs. Unsheath their bobs. That's straight from the Pokedex. Wonderful. I love an unsheathed cocoona. Nice.

Speaker: So it actually does a little bit more than Metapod that does absolutely fuck all. Yeah, I mean, it's not hard to do more than Metapod, is it? No, that's the the baseline floor is Metapod. It's only up from there. Yeah, the only way is up. Well, there is one thing down and that's a spilled Metapod. Oh, can you not? I haven't recovered. Just the idea of it. Horrific.

Speaker: So speaking of liquefied innards,

Speaker: The cocoona's hard cocoon protects the soft bodies within which is essentially liquefied as they reconfigure themselves for evolution. This process, which is a further activity that contrasts their immobility, causes their internal body temperatures to rise drastically. So much so that the shells of cocoona that are nearing their evolution feel uncomfortably hot to the touch. Their bodies continue to heat up as they draw closer to transformation.

Speaker: Yeah, see, I can kind of get that on a science level, it makes sense. I like I said on a science level, like I'm some bloody scientist. So I guess that's why they can't spill because they don't have like holes for that to escape. So that's why it's heating up. Whereas the Metapod had a hole that if you spilt it, it would fall out. I guess that's why they didn't get hot. They had some aeration going on. Yeah. Yeah, no, it makes sense.

Speaker: So we'll move on to our little questions section. So we're going to go transport ourselves back to Viridian Forest and you have your first line of evolutions now and you're just wandering around and then you almost go to step on a pile of leaves and then you see a cute little Weedle just pop his head out from the leaves. What would you do?

Speaker: I'd kind of think I want to take it home. He is cute. Yeah. Like, he's kind of cute. I'd take him home. I reckon he would feel hairy. See, I don't see how this fucker can be hairy. But he must be. He's the hairy insect or whatever he was called.

Speaker: But like, it's just nothing about his hairs. What do his hairs do? Is his hairs poisonous? Are they spiky? Is it soft? What are the hairs for? He kind of looks like skin. He does. In the pictures. Like, that's what we said. He looked like a bit like a maggot -y thing. Maybe if he's velvety. Oh. Oh, like one of those really hairy caterpillars.

Speaker: Oh, that kind of feel a little bit sweaty and warm. Yeah. Oh, maybe. I love a bit of a Weedle suede shoe. His uses are making clothes. So you take this guy? Yeah, why not? He'd be good for a cuddle, I reckon. You just got to avoid the poison barbs. Yeah, but you know, the best things are poisonous.

Speaker: I don't know. Like alcohol. Yeah, yeah, first. So you pocket this guy and then you continue on your little trek and then you see ahead of you that there's a cocoona hanging from a tree. No. No. No interest. Just leave it there. I might take a fight. But that's about it. Then you would worry like if you disturbed this.

Speaker: Would there be Beedrill waiting for you? Yeah, I just don't have the energy for it, honestly. He's pretty heavy. Yeah, and I don't like wasps. I don't like the noise they make, the whole... So no, I just ignore it. Alright, that's fair. I'd agree with you. So for your little Weedle, what function do you think this Pokémon could have other than battling? I think it'd be good on a farm.

Speaker: break down the stuff some composting oh yeah he would be good at that like slithering around in there yeah you know like a massive compost heap he just helps break it down move stuff i just reckon he'd be quite handy little guy and you wouldn't have to worry about a bird coming to pick this guy up either because he's got defenses yeah and also he's seeing the bloody sides from how big was the birds be so you're picking up and carrying him

Speaker: That'd be a bloody ego. Really big. Yeah. Shoes. We don't use shoes. Yeah, sure. We'll make some weed or sweet shoes. And then surely there must be like a use for the poison. I'm not sure on what, maybe medicinal purposes or something? Maybe. Like, what do we normally use poison for? Antivenom.

Speaker: Maybe. I'll do a Google on that. What uses for poison. Okay, so poisons can be used as pesticides, disinfectants, cleaning solutions and preservatives. That's interesting. So he would be really good because he could help with the pesticides and it's all natural, isn't it? Yeah, so he could be a twofer. He can be a composter, like a twofer one, a composter and you can use how you somehow have to milk him.

Speaker: I reckon he can, no, because he can do, I reckon he could just squirt it out. I don't know why you needed the sound of it. So you'd get your Weedle to piss. No, not this. Like spray it out of his head. Because you'd get your Weedle to squirt. Yeah. I mean, you are his trainer. He'll do what you tell him to do. Exactly. He's like, Pokemon are just health elves.

Speaker: Just back to the house elves. Master has given Dobby a sock. I've been watching a lot of Harry Potter recently. What about a cocoona? What do you think he's useful for? Fucking nothing. I mean, he'd keep you warm. Oh, you could just get a cocoona. And you know, like, in the old timey ways, you'd put like,

Speaker: one of them bottles with hot water at the foot of your bed to warm your feet. Excuse me, old timey, Han, people would still use hot water bottles, especially in England. I'm talking about the plain ones. Why us then? I'll put one. Oh! That's like Jesus Christ. It's because you live in Florida now, like we have winter here. I have a hot water bottle. Hot water bottle season is upon us.

Speaker: Right. We'll go less old time here and we'll just say a very uncomfortable hot water bottle. Okay. Yeah. I was thinking, say you're out camping. Right. Take yourself a cocooner, put him in your tent. He's going to warm you up, isn't he? You could fry an egg on him too. Yeah. Two for one. He's a two -fer. He's a two -fer. Okay. Camping equipment. Yeah. Moving on.

Speaker: So, what do you reckon a Weedle eats? Not leaves in that. We've already had that discussion. Leaves and compost. Yeah. I think that's pretty bang on for him. I would like to see, and I wish this wasn't too dark for Pokémon at this point, because they do get darker. We learnt that last week with Mimikyu. Oh god, yeah we did. You could use them like a maggot.

Speaker: Would be really cool. Like for festering wounds and stuff like that. Oh yeah, that'd be cool. But also kind of gross. Or to, you know, clean up carcasses and stuff in forests would be cool. Not cool. Well, you know what I mean. Technically cool. It would be interesting use for them. Do caterpillars and larvae and stuff feed on dead things? Like naturally?

Speaker: I don't know, I'll giggle it. Yeah, I know that, like, be your wasp larvae in particular. Alright, be larvae. Actually, I'm gonna go wasp because wasps just seem more evil. Yeah, agreed. What am I doing? Eating dead. No, I don't want to just come up with things I did not ask.

Speaker: The tiny lava lurks inside the flesh of the caterpillar. Oh no. Oh God, this is so disgusting. I can feel them all over me. No, but apparently wasps are carnivores and cannibals. So I would assume that the larvae would also eat.

Speaker: Yeah. So in this, I found a thing that says in most instances, wasps feed their larvae bits of insects that they have killed and chopped up. Yeah, so I've just read about body snatchers eaten alive by Paris parasitic wasps. Oh, I hate that. I will fill you in after this episode. Can't wait.

Speaker: That does actually give me some comfort that these could eat, because there's me thinking that things die in, say, Viridian Forest and they're just gonna stay there. But the Weedles could probably clean that up and clean up the carcasses to stop that.

Speaker: kind of horrible rotting smell. And then, you know, put it back into the, like you said, composting, you know, composting plants, composting dead things. Cycle of life, isn't it? Yeah, it is. Yeah, it is. Well, there must be other birds that are going to eat stuff as well, like... Right. They don't eat it up to a certain point. A lot of things don't like to eat things once they've started to rot. Yeah. But this guy could. This guy would eat anything by the sounds of it. What about Kakuna? What do you think he eats?

Speaker: No, I don't, I don't even think he eats, he just... I don't think so either. Moo, like... I don't know, what's the word? Turns into a... something to me. He's just like... I say metamorphosizes, but that's not right. That is right, yeah. Metamorphosizes. Is it? Yeah. Nice, look at me, I'm well smart. So, could we eat a wheedle? Um, no, it'd be like eating a maggot. Why is this more gross than eating a canopy?

Speaker: I don't know, because it is more gross. Yeah, plus he's poisonous. So you don't know kind of what level that poison actually runs in this thing. Yeah, so we could die. So no, we could not eat a Weedle, nor could we eat a Cocoona.

Speaker: Yeah, I don't think we could eat that either. Like the better part, we could kind of argue that you could cook it in its shell. But no, that was you. That was me. I was so anti that, that was so gross. But yeah, I think adding the poison element, anything that has is a poison typing, I would be more hesitant. Yeah, like I don't think we should eat poison type. It'd be like eating a poison dart frog surely. Yeah, it would be a bad idea.

Speaker: Alright, so you're in this nice bar that you found in Viridian Forest. You just pulled the wings off your butterfree you were fighting. And you just sat down, you've ordered a gin and tonic, and then a Weedle and a Kakuna walk in. How do you think you'd measure up in a fight? Yeah, I could take them. Probably both at the same time.

Speaker: Yeah, I mean, Kakuna would definitely be an afterthought because he'd just be inching his way towards you from the door. You'd have - Well, you see, I'd use Kakuna, once again, I would use Kakuna as a weapon to knock down Weedle. You don't have to get close to the poison barbs in that way. I also think I'd be wearing big old boots. They just fucking step on it, squash it. Step on them both. Yeah, kick them.

Speaker: Just you stood in the bar, kicking the ever -loving shit out of a cocoona that's trying to inch its way away. That's why you love me. You get shaken baby syndrome by shaking up its innards. Try and evolve now, you're gonna be all messed up. Oh, no. On that note, we nailed them. What do you think about Weedle? Do you like him more or less?

Speaker: I have no opinion on the guy. I've never liked him really. And now I still don't care for him. What about the other one? I wouldn't catch him. The other one, again, I have no need for it. I'd catch him just for my Pokedex. Literally zero other requirements. I think I like Weedle a little bit more, because it had kind of a defensive little guy. And I was like, oh, bless you. Kakuna, I'd like less.

Speaker: I like Kakuna more than I like Metapod. Same. Because I hate Metapod most of all. I can't knock him over and have his innards spill out, so he's a lot better than the other one. And if you're freezing to death, you could always hug him. Yeah, exactly. He'd save me in a forest, whereas the other one would just spill all over me. The other one would hinder you. This one may help you. Exactly. Exactly. All right. Crushed it. All right.

Speaker: And I will sail away, sail away, sail away. And yeah, I don't like these guys much, but I like them a wee little bit more. Hey, well played, my G, well played. Bye. Bye, we'll catch you next week.
