Introduction to the French and Indian War

00:00:09
Speaker
Welcome to Tales from the French and Indian War. I'm your host, Jackson. And I'm Matt. And in this podcast, we will be going through the French and Indian War, also known as the Seven Years' War, the Third intel Intercolonial War, or La Guerre de la Conquรชte.
00:00:29
Speaker
We will be covering this war, highlighting the main personalities that stood out in this conflict, the main battles that shaped the direction of it, strategies used by both sides throughout the years, and all of the good drama that is covered in this very fascinating time period.

Impact and Global Significance

00:00:49
Speaker
Now, why do we care about this time period? Why are we interested in the French and Indian War? Matt, go ahead and fill us in on why this period interests you.
00:01:01
Speaker
Yeah, so obviously this war had a huge impact for all of North America. And I think a lot of people living in North America and the U.S. don't really learn of the war on a global scale. So we're going to touch on that a bit in the show and the massive global impact that this war had. ah Recently, I was just reading a book about this war. And The author said that a lot of historians think that this war should have been called the First World War. So it's a it's very fascinating and it's kind of a forgotten piece of history.
00:01:29
Speaker
It also highlights, I think, one key aspect of American history that doesn't get a lot of attention, and that's the the Native American history and how they were allied with both sides of this war, the French and the British, and what role they played.
00:01:43
Speaker
But yeah.

Hosts' Backgrounds and Passion

00:01:44
Speaker
And then, you know, you might be wondering to yourself, why should I be listening to these two guys that have not given any credentials on ah on a history podcast, but we don't have any credentials. Jackson and I are just two good friends. I studied international business in college.
00:02:01
Speaker
Yes, and I study political science. So, I mean, neither of us have any history background or anything. This is just purely a passion project for us something we started because, you know, we're we're really interested in this time period. We want to share that interest with you guys. And but we hope to we hope to keep this going. Have a lot of fun.
00:02:19
Speaker
Yeah.

Importance of the War

00:02:20
Speaker
And yeah, I definitely agree with you, Matt, about you know the global impact and importance of this war in this time period. I really feel like it gets overshadowed a lot by the American War of Independence, which of course happens just about 10, 15 years after this. you know In school, you got to fly through ah as much history as you can. So most... ah Most curriculum just focus on the Revolutionary War, and for good reason.
00:02:48
Speaker
But there's so many fascinating stories, so many tantalizing what-ifs that happen in this war. You know, it's really the time where the fate of North America will be decided. You've got three main players all vying for some sort of control.
00:03:07
Speaker
you have the French, you have the British, you have all the different Native American tribes kind of jockeying for position and trying to... to emerge. And of course you have the Spanish down in the South as well.
00:03:19
Speaker
So it's really the last time that North America, especially what will become the United States, where the future is unwritten about who is going to come out on top.
00:03:30
Speaker
And it's just that, that time period is so unique to explore. I definitely agree with that. And in Jackson, I think you also live near quite a few of the important places that we're going to be talking about.

Personal Connections to Historical Sites

00:03:43
Speaker
you know Yes. just yeah Yeah, that is right. That is one thing, though we have no credentials, of course. We do have some advantages, and that is, yeah, I live in the Pittsburgh area. And if you have some familiarity going in with some of the starting events of this war,
00:03:58
Speaker
it was Well, we can simplify it and say it was fought for what is now modern day Pittsburgh. Of course, well before it existed, but the Ohio country, this area, what is now Southwest Pennsylvania. There's a lot of important historical sites related to the war. There's some places where there are some Indian villages, some forts.
00:04:19
Speaker
the The sparks that lit this war that started in you know the backwoods of Pennsylvania and then spread all the way to Europe, to the Caribbean, to West Africa, to India, to the Philippines, you know started right here.
00:04:32
Speaker
So one advantage we have on this podcast is being able to visit some of these sites, some of these museums. I've visited some before and I plan to continue to check out some of these places as we go along and cover the war.
00:04:45
Speaker
And, uh, Matt, you're over in Toledo, which is a little farther from some of these places, but there is still plenty of native American and French action and influence in that area. uh, yeah, definitely. so Yeah.
00:04:59
Speaker
Uh, yeah. So yeah, for sure. I used to think Toledo really only had a lot of relevant or relevance with the war of 1812. I live about 10 minutes away from the battle fallen tempers battle site and So I thought it was all War of 1812 up here, but I was, you know, that French Indian War book I mentioned, i was I was reading recently the French when they went to ah stake their claim in the Ohio Valley originally before this all kicked off.
00:05:25
Speaker
They actually sailed around. um They used the Ohio River for transport and, near know the Allegheny and the, all what's the other river in Pittsburgh, Jackson? Monongahela. The Monongahela, that's right. Can't forget the Monk.
00:05:37
Speaker
And they traveled down the Ohio and went up to eventually Cincinnati and Fort Wayne. And then they took the mommy river back out to Lake Erie and then up back to Canada. So, uh, it's pretty cool having, having that in your backyard and,
00:05:51
Speaker
I fully expect us to do a battle site tour as this podcast goes on so we can actually have you know some context as to what we're talking about. Yes, I would love to do that for sure.

Podcast Structure and Future Plans

00:06:03
Speaker
but yeah, so what you can expect from the episodes to come, this is just a short introduction to who we are and what this podcast is. We will be trying to move mostly chronologically, hitting some of the main factors, main stories, main battles in the war. The the first episode after this will be just a expectation setting, like what is going on in the world around the start of this war, around 1750, just so you can get some familiarity with some of the
00:06:37
Speaker
the why the world is the way it or was the way it was at that time. Why are the French and the British competing for this area? Why do they have such rivalry? What's going on with the Native Americans during this time and elsewhere in the world?
00:06:53
Speaker
well Episodes will probably be... Well, it depends how lively the conversation gets, I suppose, but we'll probably aim for about an hour moving chronologically through the war, trying to draw on multiple sources, not just the British perspective, not just the French perspective, and not just the Native American perspective. We'll try to do a mixture of all of those. I've noticed some sources, they'll i mean especially English sources,
00:07:20
Speaker
They will almost exclusively focus on the British and American colon colonial perspective. So I'm hoping we can kind of paint a a balanced picture of what everyone wanted, all the different people involved.
00:07:33
Speaker
And we'll work our way through the war to its conclusion and probably just the ah just afterwards with the consequences of the ah the result of the peace between France and Great Britain.
00:07:46
Speaker
But yeah, that is what the podcast will probably look like. Anything else to add, Matt? No, I think you summed it up perfectly. The only thing I would add is that, you know, like I said, this is a passion project for us. So I think throughout our chronological timeline, we'll probably have a few detours talking about some aspects of the war in the time period that really fascinate us. And we might have like shorter episodes fully dedicated to you know like life as a Native American in this time period, or what life would be like for your average French and British foot soldiers. so Something of that nature, just to give you a little bit more in-depth, then we might pick different things that we find really fascinating to dive in on. But yeah, I think you i think you summed it up perfectly.
