Introduction & Upcoming Nottingham Forest Match

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everyone and welcome back to the Daily Manchester United here on the Global Sports Podcast Network. We're here, the international break is finally over. Hallelujah, sing the praises, anything to beat those Monday Blues. Yes, tomorrow we face up against Forest in our first game after the international break. My name is Kieran, I'm glad to say I'm joined at the start of this week by Tom Cairns. Tom, how are you doing?

Manchester United's Prospects Against Nottingham Forest

00:00:35
Tom Cairns
Hello, Kieran. Hello, everyone. Yes, the international break is over. The FA Cup ties are finished. Now we return to Premier League football on Tuesday evening, which we go up against an informed Nottingham Forest.
00:00:46
Tom Cairns
Can't say we've got high hopes for it.
00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:00:48
Tom Cairns
I'm not expecting to get anything from it. But I think the most important thing is, as long as don't get any suspensions or injuries, because we do have Manchester derby to look forward to the following weekend, think it's just a give and take, really, um as far as Tuesday is concerned.
00:01:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I was listening in on Friday's episode. I did hear you say that you just want to get through it. Don't don't care about the score. Just get through it without any injuries, without any suspensions. ah Quite a bold statement there,

Nottingham Forest's Recent Form and Key Players

00:01:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tom. I'm just hoping we don't get battered because Forest are, you know, they're chasing for Champions League this year and they've been absolutely phenomenal.
00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I see this as two teams who really love to play on the break and it's probably going to be one of those matches of who blinks first.
00:01:26
Tom Cairns
I couldn't agree more. I mean, Forrest will be fancying it. I mean, any game now, given that they just got through in the FA Cup at Brighton, they've got every reason to go into Tuesday's game, thinking that, you know, this is probably the easiest game against Manchester United they've had in the Premier League era.
00:01:43
Tom Cairns
Bearing in mind, they had had a long hiatus away from the Premier League. I think it was 23 years they've been out of the top flight before coming back in 2022. Scraping relegation the first couple of seasons.
00:01:55
Tom Cairns
um And Nuno Espirito Santo, since he's joined, has totally transformed that team as he did at Wolves. And so after his dismal spell at Tottenham, you have to say that the way that Nuno Espirito Santo has settled that squad.
00:02:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:02:10
Tom Cairns
If you remember, Forest signed so many players in their first season back, it was ridiculous. But then PSR caught up with them and they got a four point deduction. But that made no difference to their finishing position last year.
00:02:23
Tom Cairns
so This season, with what they've got, with the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White performing brilliantly, Anthony Alanga, Chris Wood as well, he's been phenomenal. And Ryan Yates, you know, the yeah the old boy within the team who's been following Forrest all his life, has every reason to feel cheerful and with the chance of playing Champions League football.
00:02:44
Tom Cairns
So Tuesday's game, you have to say, Forrest, they're going to be up for it. Two for nail.
00:02:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. And yeah, we were talking about this on the, yeah ah we had a global sports podcast network on the daily Premier League. That episode went up, I think on either Thursday or Friday, where we talked about at some length to the team of the season so far, I guess we talked about the likes of, ah you know, Milenkovic making the centre-back line-up. I won't spoil the whole line-up, but there's no surprises for who who came in at the striking position.
00:03:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nevertheless, you know we have to be on

Counter-Attacking Style of Nottingham Forest

00:03:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
our toes. This is a fantastic Forest side who have time and time again cut teams open. But they're not completely bulletproof.
00:03:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know they've they've all They have been beaten, what was it, 7-0 this season? And I can't think of a team that you know chasing Champions League or you anything anything like that, losing 7-0.
00:03:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's it's It's been, that just has summed up this entire season for every Premier League team you You can't really predict it.
00:03:47
Tom Cairns
Well, I think they won 7-0 against Brighton, Deirdre Forest.
00:03:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:03:50
Tom Cairns
So, you well, I'll have a look for you.
00:03:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah They have lost a big scoreline, though, I'm sure.
00:03:54
Tom Cairns
But what i will say is a couple of seasons ago, we obviously lost 7-0 to Liverpool, but we still qualified for the Champions League ahead of them.
00:04:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ah, right. ah that That's me sitting in the mud, then.
00:04:02
Tom Cairns
So, yeah
00:04:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah I'll retract my statement, yeah.
00:04:05
Tom Cairns
yeah Yes. um Well, I'm having a look on there um because they've only lost seven times in the league already this season, have Brighton. ah So looking through their results, they've lost 5-0 to Bournemouth away.
00:04:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ah, right.
00:04:18
Tom Cairns
yeah so so the defeat Yeah, the defeats they've had is a 1-0 defeat at home to Fulham, 3-1 at home to Newcastle, 3-0 away to Arsenal, 3-0 away to City, 5-0 away to Bournemouth, 2-1 to Fulham away, and 4-3 to Newcastle away.
00:04:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so it wasn't... I'm getting my pictures mixed up.
00:04:36
Tom Cairns
So Newcastle have beaten Forest both home and away this season.
00:04:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, but...
00:04:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. A lot of those scorelines are 3-0. And so that that seems to me that if you can get an upper hand, just a slight upper hand against Forrest, you can get under their skin, it seems like. um And the way they play, obviously, they like to play on the counter.
00:04:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you don't give them that opportunity, if you suppress them and... slow down the play perhaps and invite Forrest to close you down. that There seem to be, you know, Nuno set up this side to counter.
00:05:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's to intercept. It's to close down quickly, get the ball and just get it up the field as quickly as possible. If you're able to slow down the play and if you're able to break that press, play against it and and find the way through with those pockets of positions that Forrest can and do leave behind, you can find a way around them. Teams have shown this season, Tom, it's it's not impossible to break down Forrest.
00:05:29
Tom Cairns
It's certainly not impossible. We've we've seen what Forrest can do. I mean, they sort of do it their old Sunday League style by just closing players down and winning the ball back whenever they lost it. You know, that's what Sunday League managers always tell you to do is so to close them down every opportunity possible.
00:05:46
Tom Cairns
But I do like how Forrest play. I do like their sort of counter attack style. We've seen it before. I can't remember which games, but I'm sure that they've done it so many times where they've just basically get everyone forward and, you know, pushing forward all the time.
00:05:59
Tom Cairns
You know, I think about the game ah they played against Aston Villa, where they came from a goal down in the second half and then goals from the likes of Ilanga and someone else who got on the score sheet.
00:06:12
Tom Cairns
But the way Forrest just rebound from losing situations It's just brilliant to see. And that's the kind of side I'd love to see in Nottingham Forest. And I think it's something we've been waiting for some time.
00:06:25
Tom Cairns
You know, before they came back to the Premier League, they've had a couple of dismal seasons where they just ended up going down games before the season finished. Whereas back in 1995...
00:06:37
Tom Cairns
They finished third with the likes of Stan Collinmore and all that. um want to see which players they had that season, just to bring back some memories, because it was a very good Nottingham Forest side, Kieran.
00:06:49
Tom Cairns
ah This was...
00:06:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, good or bad memories.
00:06:49
Tom Cairns
ah Yeah. Well, that was the season where Blackburn won the league and we finished second. But Nottingham Forest...
00:06:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bad memories then.
00:06:57
Tom Cairns
Yeah. Well, Nottingham Forest finished third with 77 points. Bearing in mind it was a 42-game season, season And looking at the squad they had, bearing in mind it was a very compressed squad back then. They had the likes of Alfie Harland, who was in that squad. They had the likes of Stan Collingmore, who was in there. Stuart Pearce was in there.
00:07:17
Tom Cairns
ah Lars Bohunen was in there. ah Colin Cooper, you had in there. Steve Stone, remember him?
00:07:26
Tom Cairns
He was in that squad. Yeah.
00:07:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, yeah, you you read off those names and, you know, the names like Stuart Pearce just make you think, yeah, I'd rather face the Forest of today rather than 20 odd years ago or thirty nearly 30 years ago.
00:07:38
Tom Cairns
Yeah.
00:07:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
that That sounds much better, much, much better. Though I have an interesting fact to share with you and I will share it with you after this break. Oh, I know I'm cruel. But when we come back, we've got a little bit of stats to talk about ahead of the game against Forest. Join us after this.

Manchester United's Post-International Break Performance

00:08:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Opta, being our very special third guest when it comes to stats and analysis, have basically yeah revealed, when you look back at it, that after the international break, the fixture for Manchester United immediately after the international break has ended.
00:09:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're undefeated in our last six of those fixtures. This is why i love, you know, the stats that just just show up. And you start you start to think, no, that can't be right. But looking back looking back at it, 17th of November, a 1-0 draw with Ipswich away from home. 13th of October, 2-1 win against Brentford. 10th of September, 24, a 3-0 win away at Southampton. 26th of March, 2024, a 1-0 draw with Brentford away from home. November 2023, against Everton.
00:09:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
At Goodison Park. And 17th October 2023. We're going back a long way. Still with McTominay in the side for that Sheffield United game. Away from home. But yeah. Undefeated in our last six fixtures. Immediately after the end of an international break. It can only mean one thing Tom. Either we're extending that record or it's going to be broken and and break all of our hearts.
00:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Which I only just formed.
00:09:53
Tom Cairns
we do yeah well We'll do well to even scrape a draw in that game, Kieran, because think when we are facing a counter-attack from Forrest, they seem to push so many men forward against our lacklustre back line.
00:10:09
Tom Cairns
So I wouldn't want bank on trying to get a seventh game in a row you know from after an international break is endo that we're going to end up per not being beaten. So... um But going away from how we do, we mentioned about international breaks, about whether we like them, whether we hate them.
00:10:29
Tom Cairns
I'm kind of on the fence with it. What do you think?
00:10:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i I get international breaks have to be done. But I think this season we had about, what, three international breaks in space of three months? And I think that was that was starting to get a bit tiresome, especially when you're you'll get to, what was it? We had one in September, I think it was, mid-September, and we had about five Premier League games. And then all all of a sudden it's a break. I mean, I know there's always an international break after the summer transfer window. That's sort of how it works. But yeah, it it gets a little bit...
00:10:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know, tedious? Because you just want to play the league football. you'd You'd love it. I mean, we don't have to worry too much about any England players going to the squad at the moment. You consider that a blessing in disguise at your peril.
00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, I mean, Nations League, I don't really get it. I guess it's better than friendlies, but yeah, they exist. And I think we just have to make peace with that.
00:11:24
Tom Cairns
Well, the Nations League are better than friendlies and i'm I'm all for the Nations League so that similarly ranked teams go up against those in the same league, if that makes sense.
00:11:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:11:33
Tom Cairns
It's like what we saw with San Marino, where they famously won against Liechtenstein, both home and away in their Nations League group.
00:11:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:11:40
Tom Cairns
And they won their group to get promotion to League C, which was great to see. you know And I like stories like that. Whereas with us, we were in League B. um We needed to finish top of the group to go back up into League A, which we are now.
00:11:55
Tom Cairns
um Could it be that there is like a window where they can have like a finals type scenario where you have three or four weeks off of an international break where you have all the Nations League games or all your qualifying games all sort of congealed into one big sort of break.
00:12:17
Tom Cairns
So you get them all done and then everything else is sorted and then you can do all your league games and cup games um without any more breaks needing to happen. Maybe that is something that could be reconsidered for future reference.
00:12:29
Tom Cairns
What what do you reckon? Because I wouldn't mind it, but the disadvantage is you could end up having conversations taken away where certain players who are performing brilliantly for a period of time end up falling away weeks before the international break arrive.
00:12:46
Tom Cairns
And then they just don't find themselves in the conversation like they should be, if that makes sense.
00:12:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, I like the idea of the three or four week period of of just getting all of the international breaks done, but you'd need to broker that deal with, the is it five continental footballing bodies? I'm trying to think now, it could be six actually.
00:13:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Needless to say, the likes of UEFA, CONCACAF, you've got the Asia Football Association as well. They would all need to agree on that three to four week period. And considering um when you've got South America or you you know they've got...
00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
the Copa America and how every team basically faces each other. It's not possible to do that in a three to four week period. um You know, so ah there there are complications to it. There's a reason why FIFA have mandated certain points in the calendar as international breaks so that the continental bodies can say, right,
00:13:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
here's when we'll play these matches, here's when we'll organise them. And so UEFA pretty much made the UEFA Nations League, as you said, as an upgrade to the friendlies. At least teams are going up against competitive or you know similarly competitive rivals instead of you know England coming up against San Marino again, which is the qualifiers rather than the Nations League.
00:14:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, I see the point or at least the appeal of the Nations League, but... There's been so many breaks up in play and it feels like sometimes the players that don't go on international duty, you know, do they do they lose the rhythm?
00:14:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, if you're on a good run of form and you hit the international break, you're almost cursing your luck like like we have on this occasion. We've we've actually finally hit a good run of form and then all of a sudden it comes to a stop and 12 players are jetted off.
00:14:30
Tom Cairns
Yeah, well, I would want to say that if you have like a three to four week break, you then have all the matches done. You know, with the fact that we've lost the FA Cup replays because of all the things going with UEFA competitions and all that.
00:14:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's still a sore spot, yes, but go on.
00:14:47
Tom Cairns
Yeah, yeah.
00:14:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right.
00:14:48
Tom Cairns
If you had that window where you can simply get six Nations League games done in a space of three to four weeks, think... how logistically that could help instead of just players needing to go away on international duty after being with their club for a short period of time.
00:15:08
Tom Cairns
But I don't know. it It's not an overnight problem that can be resolved, but I just like FIFA to consult with all the confederations to come together with a more logistical solution to what we currently have because ah don't like the international break sort of interrupting how the leagues are going because it just feels a bit stale what do you reckon
00:15:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
i I mean, i see you I see the point, you know. um I think ah think the introduction of the Nations League was to help it from becoming stale friendlies, you know, sort of in that in-between period before the qualifiers. So, again, I like the the idea to make it more of a competitive period and make it a little bit more of ah of a competition.
00:15:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is it a competition you go in and say, yeah, we're going to win the Nations League? No, not really. um But i can see i can see the idea. um i just think it needs a couple of times to really you know bring into fruition. I mean, UEFA have made changes to the Champions League when we had the group stage, the sort of Swiss style, if you like, group stage, which I think will grow on on people.
00:16:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the fact that Real Madrid, for example, finished in those playoff spots and then have now got Arsenal in, is it the quarterfinal, I want to say?
00:16:33
Tom Cairns
Yeah.
00:16:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Arsenal are cursing their lap, saying, well, we finished third. And Liverpool saying, well, we finished first. Why did we go up against PSG? It's because PSG and Real Madrid struggled in the group stages. That's all it was. They're good sides that struggled. And i hope that's not a preface of future teams thinking, actually, if we lose a couple of games and win the playoff, we could we could get an easier run here. But no, you're football team. You want to win every game you come. You you you want to win every game you play, surely.
00:17:01
Tom Cairns
Yeah, well, if you win your, well, if you're in the top eight, it's safe to have to play those two extra games anyway, which can only help with the fitness.
00:17:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
me
00:17:08
Tom Cairns
So I can't think why you would deliberately just not win a couple of games so that you try and get an easier cup run to the final. And I don't think that's really possible when you think of it, because there's too many good sides.
00:17:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know.
00:17:20
Tom Cairns
It's too many good sides in the Champions League.
00:17:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
True, but that take nothing away from you know the press saying, oh, herell here's how England get an easy run. All they need to do is finish second. Right, okay. Oh, well, anyway, it's ah it's all good fun, isn't it? Well, we'll take another quick break. When we come back, there's a couple of players, in fact, more than a couple, coming back after injury.
00:17:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we'll join you after this.
00:17:53

Global Sports Podcast Network
It's definitely more than a couple. It's five players who are back in training, according to the official Manchester United website, as reported by Adam Marshall on Friday. Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Lenny Yoro, Bayern Deer and Tom Heaton all back in training.
00:18:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they were given the old tunnel of death. sounds sir it sounds Sounds delightful. ah Just what you want when you're back from injury. But more importantly, Tom, a bolster of defence, hopefully. um We were speaking before the show, before we pressed record, hopefully and Lenny Uro is one of the first of them back.
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And knowing how Amrim likes to have a substitute centre-back in these games, I think it'd be a welcome welcome addition back to the bench, at least for Lenny.
00:19:08
Tom Cairns
I should think so as well, because he... can't remember which game he went off injured. I think was it against Real Sociedad or something that he...
00:19:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it was.
00:19:14
Tom Cairns
and Yeah. It might have been um the one against Arsenal, because I think someone came on for him in the second half. It might have been Aidan Heaven, who came on as a...
00:19:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think you're right, yes.
00:19:23
Tom Cairns
Yeah, think it was against Arsenal where Aidan Heaven came on, and Lenny Oro went off with um some form of knock. But, yeah, it would be nice for Oro to get some minutes just to help him get back into the regime a little bit. Thankfully, it hasn't been too long of a spell of injury.
00:19:38
Tom Cairns
ah for the Frenchman. But what I do like to see is Dorgo being back in that left-wing back role because he was suspended for three games um domestically ah for the sending off against Ipswich.
00:19:52
Tom Cairns
So i ah um I feel quite confident, not necessarily for the game against Forest, simply because I think Forest will have too much, but I think for the games against like City, Lyon and possibly Newcastle.
00:20:05
Tom Cairns
I say Newcastle, you know, when we play them We're playing them away, aren't we? So, that but yeah.
00:20:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think so. League Cup winners, Newcastle.
00:20:12
Tom Cairns
Leucott winners, yeah.
00:20:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they're big.
00:20:14
Tom Cairns
it's it's It's going to be tough. Yeah, I just... if it I would rather winning against City and beat Lyon over two legs than straight wins against Forest and Newcastle and then struggle against City and then get over the line against Lyon. I don't know what you think.
00:20:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a bold statement, Tom. That's a very bold statement. I think... um it's It's interesting you say you'd rather you think a loss against Forest but a win against City. That is interesting.
00:20:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
very I'm keen to sort of crack this egg. What makes you think that?
00:20:47
Tom Cairns
Well, i I just, I can't stand City, as you can imagine. and
00:20:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, okay, fair. Okay.
00:20:52
Tom Cairns
Well, this is the thing, like, like just, ah we've beaten them in them at the Etihad in December, and i it just made me think, we went into the game against Arsenal, not feeling confident whatsoever that were going to come away with a positive result from it. Everyone thought that Arsenal were going to wipe the floor.
00:21:08
Tom Cairns
They played terrible, did Arsenal, when we faced them at Old Trafford. And some of the performances that City have been really woeful as well. like Even in games where we thought that they were going to come away with three points.
00:21:20
Tom Cairns
Bearing in mind, they did have that barren run of form in November and December before they started playing good football again. Albeit not as well as they would normally do, but still they're keeping ah themselves above water. They should still qualify for the Champions League, given that the top five in the Premier League, I think are going to be granted that extra place in the Champions League, which will help City.
00:21:43
Tom Cairns
But, you know, it's just something about City I just can't stand. And it's mainly it's mainly the fans that that put me off. When you think of those diehard fans, like the hardcore fans of City, OK, I can feel that, you know, they've been through the barren times all those years back when they were playing in what was known as the second division at the time, now League One.
00:22:06
Tom Cairns
to be where they are. But then you just get those tourist fans that either pretend to be City supporters or diehard supporters, or they're just using the club for like their own gain, their own social media gain.
00:22:19
Tom Cairns
And that's why I hate City so much, because you just get those fans that just...
00:22:26
Tom Cairns
it's far It's hard to describe it, but when you watch them in the stadium, it's like, are they really City fans? are they just fans of a side that just loves to win all the time?
00:22:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, we would never take advantage of a club's form or people wanting to trash on them at all at any point whatsoever. Anyway, make sure you do subscribe to the Daily Manchester United...

That was a mo' blow. I do apologise. No, it's um it'll be interesting. i I'd like to say we have a chance against Forrest, but I kind of see where you're coming from. Forrest have been a lot for most sides in in the Premier League, but they've proven they can be beaten and beaten handsomely as well at periods of this of this competition. So...

Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know. They were definitely buoyed by their FA Cup win. You know, the fact they made the semi-final. They've got City in the semi-final. ah Grab the popcorn for that one. ah For once in my life, I'm going to say I hope Forrest win that. and Not at our expense. We'd rather beat you this time, Forrest, but we'll see. hey i'm I mean, this is all this is the episode before the game, Tom, so I guess what we should do to round off is the dreaded score predictions.

You've already said you're already counting for a loss, but how bad is the loss going to be?
00:23:41
Tom Cairns
I think it'll end up being 3-1 to Forrest. I said it on the show the other day, but yeah, I'm still sticking with my um outcome.
00:23:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
wow
00:23:50
Tom Cairns
I think it'll be a defeat Forrest, but I don't think we should take it too light down because I think if we put in a decent performance, that speaks better volumes than what the result will be regardless of how well we play in order to get the win or the draw or or whatever. But if we play well and still get beat,
00:24:11
Tom Cairns
then that tells you something about where this Manchester United team is at.
00:24:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'm going to go a bit more positive. Not completely optimistic, but a bit more positive. i'm going to go for a 2-2 draw. i think I think we've got enough to get a point away from Forrest. I do.

I think it's going to be a really... ah not exactly cagey, but it's going to be one of those games where who's going to be the first to blink. And once someone does blink, chaos is going to ensue.
00:24:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I hope the chaos for all evolves into us gaining a point out of the game rather than nothing at all. But we shall have to wait and see. Tom, thank you so much for joining me on this episode for this sort of preview, review, Monday madness, I guess.
00:24:51
Tom Cairns
Thank you very much. And yeah, hopefully you can put in a strong performance against Forest in the week. and Depending on how the other results go, I suppose it doesn't really make too much of a difference given where we are in the

table. It's the Europa League where our hopes need to be on.
00:25:04
Tom Cairns
But, you know, regardless of how the result goes, let's hope Forest beats City in the FA Cup semi-final, eh?
00:25:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's cross all our fingers, eh? We can agree on one thing. Come on, Forrest. Beat City for us. Do it for us.
00:25:16
Tom Cairns
Yeah.
