๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ๐Ÿชพ Do you feel it? That silent chill in the air, creeping up your spine and whispering into your ear: "School is starting soooooooooooonnnnnnn..."

But like us, you're in your 30s and this is just a trauma response to the horrors inflicted on your in school like 20 years ago? Just us? Ok.

Regardless, we are ADULTS now and that means we get to do whatever we want in the fall! We wear flannel, we drink everything in sight with the words "pumpkin spice" written on the side, and we definitely hunt down autumnal forage with the vigor of a lion running down a gazelle. Join us this week as we discuss our favorite fall activities! Don't sleep (or nap in the leaves) on this episode, because, as usual, things get a little out of hand.

Introduction & Banter

00:00:00
Speaker
Great. like Wow. Good recordings start with us pregnant silence. We'll probably cut all this anyway. Okay, now I say your thing.
00:00:11
Speaker
What was I going to say? Oh my god! you know my memory. What? What was I going to If you don't remember either, you can't give me a shit. I don't remember. You were just going to start talking about fall. Yeah.
00:00:22
Speaker
Oh, it's fall time, guys. is terrible. Aren't you in the mood? Oh my god. It's time to get in the mood. Yeah, but like better and like more natural when you did it the first time. Are you guys excited to get in the fall mood?
00:00:36
Speaker
Jesus Christ. try it? Say it enough times until it get until you're tired of it and gets natural. Are you guys excited for fall? Are you guys excited for fall?
00:00:47
Speaker
Are you guys excited for fall? Are you guys excited for fall? Autumn? Is it autumn time? Is it? Is it autumn time? Are the leaves falling?
00:00:57
Speaker
Are we wearing sweaters? Are we knitting? Is it chocolate?

Forming Habits Debate

00:01:09
Speaker
Welcome to My Everything. name's Marion. I'm Kara. And I'm Mara. And we're three best friends who like to argue about anything and everything. Before we were recording, when we thought we were recording, we were arguing a over how long it takes to form a habit.
00:01:24
Speaker
um Because Kara, do you want to tell your big news? I've done my physical therapy two days in row. Hell yeah, brother! And then I was like, oh, well, it takes 21 days to form a habit.
00:01:37
Speaker
and And I thought it was 15. And I said, the way you said that is giving like, I floss every day to your dentist. Yeah. yeah It's funny. Well, i fly I flossed twice before this to your dentist because she only did it twice.
00:01:54
Speaker
Yeah, but I'm never going to say twice. No, no, dad you're over exaggerating. Yeah. I get you. Yeah. Yeah. um Well, I looked it up and it takes at least... that They don't have any clear science, obviously. Because it's a social science.
00:02:07
Speaker
Forming habits? yeah Yeah. You think so? You can't like... what Surely you could like test some mice. it's But it's still psychology. It's social It's going to be different for every year. Research suggests it can take anywhere from 18 to 254. So 15 is not even in the running here.
00:02:27
Speaker
Woof! 254 days for a new behavior heat behavior to become automatic with an average of around 66 days. Thanks, Google AI. can you go to a non-AI? you know how much energy they waste, how much water they consume? yeah Scientific do American. Thank How long does it really take to form a habit? There's a myth that it takes 21 days to form a habit. Notice how they didn't say 15.
00:02:50
Speaker
But they called yours myth. Mine is recognized enough that it's a myth. Yours is just some random made-up number that's less than 21. It's close. Well, it's six days. Six off.
00:03:04
Speaker
Also, when you have a range that goes from 18 240... Well, according to Google AI. Yeah, where are we getting with this American science something? It's the... AmericanSoftScience.com. Scientific American.
00:03:17
Speaker
They publish okay articles. Okay, well, here's what happened. It originated from the 1960 self-help book Psycho-Cybernetics, in which plastic surgeon Maxwell Maltz... What? Well, we're starting off terribly. No. Observed it took his patients about 21 days to get used to their new appearance.
00:03:35
Speaker
What the fuck kind of science is that? This is why it's social science science. The book applied this 21 day timeline to self transformation and many other wide ranging aspects of life from the book also set three weeks as the time needed for people to get used to a new house or change their mind about their beliefs.
00:03:53
Speaker
This is so... That takes so much longer than three weeks. Also, what belief are we talking about? However, a Hallmark 2009 study on habit creation found that habits developed in a range of 15... Nice!...like 18 to 254 days, like overview Google said.
00:04:08
Speaker
to two hundred and fifty four days like ai overview google said Listen, when you have like that many days, 15, that's close enough. Yeah, that's within the statistical significant no something. I think because 18 to 254 is in that significant. I think that's the range of the significant something. Because again, average of 66 days.
00:04:29
Speaker
Well, I'm glad that Google AI didn't lead us astray. yeah Anyway, so our topic today has nothing to do with any of

Top Autumn Activities

00:04:37
Speaker
this. We are doing our top three autumn activities.
00:04:43
Speaker
Yay. Yeah, we are. and the breeze is blowing through right now. the You can smell autumn in the air. Like, for those of you who have never experienced autumn, first off. l a I'm so sorry for you Yeah. You just don't understand. Australians.
00:05:01
Speaker
God. Well, they have. I could apologize for a lot for that. Got Yeah, they've got a really bad life. Yeah. Remember woman that made an OnlyFans to donate money to the fires that was happening? Like all of the money from her OnlyFans went to like fire help.
00:05:21
Speaker
Wow, that's actually in Australia. and stuff yeah Yeah. That's beautiful. Yeah. That's how we use our bodies. Yeah. That felt Australian. What was I going to say? What? For those of you who don't know how Autumn feels...
00:05:35
Speaker
the air smells The air smells orgasmic, if you will. It's like there's a whole different scent. I had the word crisp in my mind, and then you said orgasmic. It's just so nice. It is. For the record, doesn it doesn't smell like sex juice. I think we can all agree. No. no It's just the feeling is like the bliss you get.
00:05:58
Speaker
Post-O, if you will. Oh, the... Anyway. The urge to list all the people who listen to this right now. don't know.
00:06:12
Speaker
We'll bleep that. Grayson looks upset that we're creating work for him. Eat my screen. Grayson just had his bachelor party weekend and it looks like he's still recovering. So... Yeah. We're getting half a man today.
00:06:26
Speaker
Our ginger boy looks a little sun-kissed. Three foot three inches.
00:06:33
Speaker
He doesn't even have a rebuttal. Look at him.
00:06:38
Speaker
in I told you guys I lost my voice and I wasn't going to talk. and You're just attacking Welcome to the podcast. You got to take advantage yeah of the sad shell of a human being. Dude, my favorite type of man.
00:06:50
Speaker
Silent one. That's nice. Yes. He just had to say something there. Yeah. All right. Well, who wants to go first?
00:07:01
Speaker
Well, okay. Kara says nose goes. Need a break. Oh. I can go. i mean, I can go. Sorry. I was the oh was about she needs a break. We just fucking started.
00:07:13
Speaker
why need to separate myself from the oh conversation. Oh. Oh. oh Ooh.
00:07:26
Speaker
my number three ah out of my top three autumn activities, I like making and discovering some new recipes. So like one year, Marion and I made caramel apples, which was amazing. And then last year, I made um pumpkin syrup for like coffee and lattes we and stuff. And I've made sweet potato gnocchi. You sat on the couch and watched me. You said the kitchen was too small.
00:07:50
Speaker
You didn't want to make it. You came over so we could make this syrup. And then we got towards the night and you're like, do we really have to make this? And I said, what? Yes. Where have you gotten this from malarkey? The event of what I'm describing. I don't know. I'm going to need receipts. I'm going to need updates.
00:08:11
Speaker
I don't record our hangouts. I'm just telling you, remember you didn't want to make it. And I said, I'm still making it. There's no way. Don't gaslight me.
00:08:25
Speaker
What happens if two people think the other person's gaslighting them? What do you do? Like you think I'm gaslighting you? Yeah. When have I ever not wanted to do anything? When it got too late. but Oh, like on on the actual day, like we were Because you had cooked dinner. Yeah. And then. And I was like, are you sure you want to do it?
00:08:47
Speaker
That's what Mark said. Yeah. I don't think you, it was more of like a, I don't want to do this. No. Is what I remember. Hmm. Oh, same words, different intent. Yeah.
00:08:59
Speaker
Cause I was very adamant. I mean, you did do it. I remember she did do it. Yeah. It did.

Nature & Fall Traditions

00:09:05
Speaker
have I'll take some next year. I mean, right now. Cause it's autumn. Yes. It's not a vegan.
00:09:12
Speaker
Oh, what's in it? I don't, you know. Condensed milk. Can't remember. Condensed I thought it was a, like, they make vegan. didn't make but I remember what it was. made it vegan because there was, v there's vegan condensed milk.
00:09:24
Speaker
Condensed coconut milk. Yeah. Why would we have made a vegan? Um, for the fact that you, Mackenzie, and i don't really do well with lactase. Oh, Most people don't. Lactaid.
00:09:39
Speaker
Everybody listening, you have a problem. Yeah. Oh, ho, ho. But so I'm excited. i don't know what my new food this year going to be. I like the sweet potato gnocchi idea. that was cute. It's fun. It's pretty easy. I'm going to I'm growing.
00:09:55
Speaker
I grew, I'm growing, uh, acorn squash. Okay. They got their first flower today. Yeah. When do they get done? idea. Fall. We'll find out. ah Oh, yeah. Right now during the recording. Today. God, time is, we're having trouble time traveling today.
00:10:12
Speaker
Uh, I want to do wild rice this year. i got a whole wild rice recipe book when we went camping for my birthday. And there's like four, not 400, maybe like 20 recipes. was going to say like 40 maybe.
00:10:26
Speaker
Maybe 40 recipes. The book is like thinner than my finger.
00:10:31
Speaker
I'll get an update on that. I don't know that that's true. I don't remember. It's okay. It was tiny. That's a good one.
00:10:43
Speaker
Yeah. Minus your blatant character assassination of me. It's what happened. It's not my fault if you don't remember it. I remember it definitely. As they say, I've heard it both ways.
00:10:56
Speaker
Yeah. I'll go. My top three autumn activity is my falter. I did it last year. yeah It was a fall alter.
00:11:07
Speaker
Really good name. Falter. where I just tried to pick something every day from the outside world, typically, and collect it and put it in one place.
00:11:19
Speaker
And it was a really fun way to connect with nature and also, like, be present and watch the ways in which the seasons were changing around me. was like a little scavenger hunt every day. ah And it was it was just really nice to, like...
00:11:36
Speaker
Also, the challenge of trying to only pick up things that weren't, like, living and growing. Because I i contemplated doing a spring altar um and spring, but I was like, it's kind I mean... Because you're even killing things. Yeah, you're, like, yeah picking things and killing them if you take them up.
00:11:55
Speaker
Like, it just seemed a lot harder. Fall was nice because everything's already... dead yeah I'm just picking up corpses yeah corpse scavenging it's really romantic yeah it's very metal super goth like a soft goth it is it's like trad wife goth
00:12:19
Speaker
oh my god that really got me a trad wife goth what else does she do i assume she gardens hence why but like gardens does she know where she like my gothic garden What's in the gothic garden? all Black. All the beautiful dark purple that look black flowers. Yeah. And bodies, I assume.
00:12:43
Speaker
Bodies of critters from my compost, maybe. I assume a goth trad wife. Killed her husband? Yeah. Yeah. Has a couple husbands buried underneath. Yeah.
00:12:56
Speaker
Whichever one she's on. Kind of like a black beard situation where she's probably on her third husband. And there's a couple in the gardens. Perf. That's a, what a dream. What a goal. In their raised bed ah or, you know, oriented up down.
00:13:11
Speaker
Living in a haunted house. Yeah. Staring at children as they go by from your black lace curtains. Yes. What? Nothing. What?
00:13:24
Speaker
What? My number three is Haunted House. Okay. She didn't even say it. She said Haunted House. But I saying it as in the Goths' trad wife would live there. Yeah, she does.
00:13:36
Speaker
Wow. Okay, well, good segue. Yeah. Yeah, my number three. My glare gave me psychic damage that you gave me. so I was proud of myself for not having mentioned it. I...
00:13:49
Speaker
love Okay, but also... You know what? Say what you're going to say, but I have... go ahead. No, say what your number three is. I'm about to beat down on this. Aw.
00:14:00
Speaker
Yeah. I love yourself haunted houses. i like the energy that they bring. i like that there's like little kid versions all the way up to like super terrifying ones. There's ones where you go to like the corn maze and you're sitting on the hayride, whatever. there's also And then...
00:14:19
Speaker
when we were in When we were in high school, we used to run them. And then we also, Marianne and I worked at Pally where we did ours and we got professional makeup and stuff. And it was super fun. i love participating.
00:14:31
Speaker
i right I love being the person. 10 out of 10. 10 out of 10. What's your qualm? It's a Halloween activity, not an auto activity. Halloween happens in autumn. We could do a whole topic of just Halloween. Which is like whatever, you know? She's just making it so she can't put that in her Halloween list. There you go. and She's making it harder. like For herself. also not one of the topics. For this year. Yeah.
00:14:57
Speaker
Could be a different year. i just think getting specifically into Halloween is dismissing all the rest of autumn. I would argue that autumn is like mid-September to early November. Then why And falls in the window. Well, and Thanksgiving.
00:15:14
Speaker
I think Thanksgiving is the cuff, but yeah. Why not just put Halloween in as top fall activity? Because because that you need more specifics. That's not an activity. is. Halloween is an activity. You can't go to Halloween. You go to a haunted house.
00:15:27
Speaker
You can celebrate Halloween. Activity. Correct. You can celebrate fall equinox. Activity. Nah. When you say like Halloween, it like makes me think like all of it. Yeah.
00:15:37
Speaker
There's this like Halloween party. Yeah, there's Halloween party, there's haunted houses, there's the candy. Can celebrate Christmas is activity? That's not a fall activity. No, no, I would say opening presents is an activity. Christmas is not an activity. Celebrating Christmas is an activity. No.
00:15:53
Speaker
Be more specific. The nuclear force of the scoffing and the derision if Kara had said Halloween Exactly. Well, that's what I'm saying. is You're you're like saying she should have said Halloween. No, I'm not. been That would have been bad. You're proving my point.
00:16:10
Speaker
Yes. If she had said Halloween, then that would be like... I'm saying that haunted house and Halloween, same category of like derision and scoff from me. on this because like autumn activities are like their own but you can go to because otherwise we might as well just put thanksgiving no halloween fall equinox done autumn activities top three you can go also autumn activities dude you can go to a haunted house at any point in october so like because but not september
00:16:44
Speaker
I'm I'll find one. But you can only look at fall leaves for a month too. And it depends on the place. But you know what I mean. It's also not the whole time. Well, it could be the whole time depending on where you go.
00:16:59
Speaker
I'm cool with this one. Yeah. Halloween's in not fall. and All that shit. Fall activities. Fall activities. All right. All right. Mara, what's your number two? um My number two is mushroom hunting in foggy woods, like really early in the morning um when the leaves are at peak.
00:17:16
Speaker
Cute. And then I like bring a little coffee. Sometimes I bring my camping stove and I warm up cider. i want to go do this. And then like I'll make like a charcucci board sometimes. Hell yeah.
00:17:28
Speaker
Camping bare bones. Like a mushroom one? Like a day camping. No, no, no. ah assume the shrew i know i think oh You I don't. Oh, you don't forage them. You look.
00:17:40
Speaker
I just like to find them. Yeah. Yeah. This is a great autumn activity. Wonderful. Yeah. Very autumnal. Yeah. Yeah. I agree. We're agreeing with each other. Okay. My brother and my sister-in-law go mushroom hunting and they eat like everything they find. I guess i guess it's hard to kill yourself in Minnesota.
00:18:00
Speaker
but No, it's pretty easy. I don't know. i wouldn't I wouldn't do it, but they do it all the time. Yeah, they eat a lot of them. Wow. yeah But it's like it's like chicken in the woods and like puffball. It's like the very obvious ones. It's not like your slimy pink science goo. You can't eat that one? Shocker. I would assume, yeah.
00:18:20
Speaker
I mean, who looks at pink goo a tree? Yummy. I don't know who looks at mushrooms, honestly, anymore and it goes, I'm having a mushroom. Dude, a bunch of crunchy bitches.
00:18:32
Speaker
I used to be one of them. I just the excitement of finding you could have been a crunchy trad wife if only if I if I only liked mushrooms yeah you're not crunchy at all what does a gothic trad wife do with mushrooms dude she makes them on the falter I think both falter Yeah, poisons. That's how she gets her husband's. Yeah. Because then there's no tracking how she bought the mushrooms to get the person dead. Actually, there was just a woman. I think she was in Australia. And she did get convicted recently for intentionally poisoning. with a mushroom?
00:19:09
Speaker
Yeah. Oh! Wow. wow Everybody else, I think almost everybody died. One guy lived, and that's why. you know. Yikes. So you know if you're going to do it,
00:19:21
Speaker
Get the... this is why Get them all. this This is why it wasn't on my top three ways. Well, guess that would be top three ways to murder someone, not dispose of the evidence.
00:19:32
Speaker
Yeah. have to do that one day. Put it on the list. Ding. Ding. no arguments with mushrooms hell yeah i like the mood setting you did too the foggy a little warm yeah yeah you get a hat on and eventually you take it off because you warmed up and the day is because you have the sun yeah yeah my number i want to go with you this year okay okay my number two top fall activity is ah probably other people's number ones It's pretty pervy.
00:20:04
Speaker
It's leaf peeping. Yeah. Yeah, I figured. that's even well i was I tied that one into my number two. When leaves are at peak. Mushroom hunting, and foggy woods, when leaves are at peak.
00:20:15
Speaker
Oh, okay. I tied it in. Yeah, you went for all of it. That's not my number one This is a good one. Leaf peeping is, I think, quintessential fall activity.
00:20:27
Speaker
Yeah. And you can do it anywhere at any time uh you gotta go to different regions i love that you can go to wisconsin at some point you can go to northern minnesota take a trip to boston in the fall yeah see the leaves have a couple laughs and you can like chase them you can start up north and then you can chase them down south oh my god there should be wait tm tm tm should we start an instagram account that is called leaf chasers and it's like storm chasers but you only go and sign leaves you should follow the minnesota state park yeah instagram that exists but tm tm tm but do they but do they do it like in the form of i'm talking about like a parody account of storm chasers yeah but it's it's leaf chasing
00:21:18
Speaker
Is the information still going to be easy to find about the leaf forecast or is it going to be a bunch of jokes? I take my leaf peeping seriously. i want the data up front. like the DNR website. You know how storm chasers, they don't give you the data. They just send you the cool pictures and videos. like They're like, oh I'm so up close to the tornado.
00:21:40
Speaker
Except you're like so up close to like ah one of those like little swirling. that You know when a pocket of leaves get in a swirl? and you're like, oh my god, I can't believe I catch this on video. Something like that. And the background is you like stomping with your boots on leaves. so Make the noise.
00:21:58
Speaker
yeah Yeah. I'm not on this account. This is you two. This is an M&M situation. No, you're trying. yeah um That's got to be the background noise of somebody. This is a fun episode.
00:22:11
Speaker
Tell me your next Halloween activity.

Fall Activities & Climate Change

00:22:15
Speaker
ah My number two... was apple orchards. Okay. Mostly so that I can eat all the things that other people make with apples.
00:22:23
Speaker
Yeah. the The picking is fine. I like picking other people's fruit than the labor that they've put in. ah But I really like the like donuts and the cider and there's like little bands and stuff and you have the picture opportunities. on And the pumpkins. The people watching at Apple Awards are fucking prime.
00:22:41
Speaker
Why? Because there's so many people and they're doing many wild stuff. Children. Yeah. It's funny. Okay. To watch them. Okay. Sometimes there's meltdowns. Sometimes yeah there's like a hundred of them in one group and you're like, how are these people? How do they know each other? You and I have different thoughts when we look at children an apple orchard.
00:22:58
Speaker
I find it entertaining. Somebody once told me I was working in Hawaii and that there was it was there were a bunch of kids and another counselor turned to me, changed my life.
00:23:09
Speaker
He said, little kids are just like little drunk adults. changed my life yeah have never gotten over that it's the truest thing ever like there was this kid banging a stick against a rock for like 10 minutes and i was like a drunk 20 year old would do that like anything a kid does a drunk 20 year old would do that yeah yeah yeah it's uh it does make watching children so fun when you think of them as drunk but not actually drunk obviously yeah tm tm tm that still doesn't do
00:23:43
Speaker
but
00:23:46
Speaker
closer but yeah um okay i i like apple orchards too if the temperature's right i've had the misfortune the past two years once in la once in minnesota going deciding to do apple orchard day on a day that's 90 degrees and that has been a big bummer both times climate a change yeah well yes i yeah wait you think it's climate change yeah i do you don't think that it sometimes gets 90 degrees i mean in la it definitely does in october october is like one of the hotter months talking about minnesota it doesn't get 90 degrees in october i'd be interested to see like the records how far they go back and like there's a difference between record and average so we have to look at the average temperature and then compare it to 90
00:24:33
Speaker
Right. But like if you've got, let's say, like 20 percent of the days ah of that day over the years is over like 80. Right.
00:24:44
Speaker
right but i wouldn't like call it years in the past or 10 years in the past. Well, I don't even know. Right. We don't always have records 100 years in the past for the temperature. So you can only go like the last. It's usually about 100. 50, 60.
00:24:57
Speaker
for they started doing oh because we're in 25 yeah we're not enough we're not in the anymore um i'm oh like what you're about the 1800s you can't go there you dummy don't really like apple cider donuts they're fine what do we think about apple fritters apple fritters yes okay a i don't really associate apple fritters as a well an autumn thing but also no you can get apple fritter anytime yeah donut store yeah but they're at anyway continue and the sigh that's why he's not gonna give they didn't capture it
00:25:40
Speaker
um
00:25:42
Speaker
Isn't it great being in the middle? What? I just think they taste like a donut. They do. And it's it's just not exciting. I feel that at the apple orchards, they put more apple in, which is what I need.
00:25:57
Speaker
Okay. I feel like normal apple fritters, it's like a quarter of an apple they cut up a little bit and then they sprinkle it on top. And I feel like at the apple orchards, they actually have a lot of apple. I'm glad that it excites you.
00:26:10
Speaker
Yeah, thanks.
00:26:12
Speaker
ah ah yeahbreaker I agree that apple cider donuts don't really taste like anything other than donut, but I do love them. Yeah. They don't need to taste like it. I like it. Yeah.
00:26:23
Speaker
I'm a sucker for the fresh donuts. I view apple cider donuts. This is getting into our next episode, but I view apple cider donuts kind of like coffee cake.
00:26:34
Speaker
You know, coffee cake doesn't often have coffee in it. Yeah. Apple cider donuts go with apple cider. They're like really good with like that thick apple cider. My mouth is water. But that's like two sugary foods. we don't, that's the coffee cake goes nice with coffee because the coffee is so bitter. And then you have this like sweet, there's like juxtaposition. But people put cream and sugar in their coffee. Pussies do. Yeah.
00:27:00
Speaker
the point being that apple cider like a cold glass of apple cider with a hot cider donut yum oh i don't like both cider well hot cider is so thin and gross and watery and sometimes it's just a powder mix from these places yeah and it's like why are we doing that yeah it is just a powder mix i also don't like that the donuts are covered in like sugar i don't there's that's too messy i don't need that you know what you need you need apple cider and then an unsugared donut because then you would get the plain and the sugary then you would have the right combination a fried dessert and a sugary drink yeah but the fried dessert wouldn't have any sugar in it it wouldn't be sweet
00:27:43
Speaker
a zero sugar donut? I don't think that donuts themselves have a lot of sugar in them. Really? yeah Yeah, because it's the glaze and the whatever they put on top. That's like, I mean, okay cake donuts, cake donuts or cream, you know, yeah that's different. But like a squishy dough donut? Yeah.
00:28:02
Speaker
All right. You could just have the plainest... and most disgusting little. Hell yeah, that's giving like a Wonder Bread deli meat sandwich. Give it to me When I was a kid, we would we would vacation the Ozarks and all the cousins would make donuts from scratch and all you do is get the, from scratch. yeah What you do is you get the um Pillsbury, what do you call them? The little. Biscuits? Yeah, the biscuits. Yeah. You just push your finger in the middle and pull it out so that there's a hole in the middle you fry them.
00:28:31
Speaker
Okay. Because it's bread. Yeah. Because there's no sugar. Okay. okay which are great by the way when we go to the apple orchard i'll just ask since they're making them fresh yeah don't sugar mine thanks i bet you could yeah okay cool i'll try it out let's go to our sponsors
00:28:53
Speaker

00:28:59

00:29:17
Speaker
That's why I walked back. Yeah. ah Anyway, our number two sponsor this week is two. Oh, Halloween. Yeah, I was just, oh my God.
00:29:31
Speaker
Halloween, thanks for giving us activities. Exactly. You don't get it. You'll never get Fall activities. I'm on your side, Karen. I just like instigating. I can't help it. Number one sponsor.
00:29:47
Speaker
The turning of the earth. yeah okay yeah thank you yeah thanks earth on earth that yeah galaxy earth mommy and the sun for doing your thing your little naughty thing yes you're bad bad sun cobalt blue autumnal crispy looking sky thanks bitch
00:30:20
Speaker
Possibly my favorite thing. There's two, but one is whenever Mara like works through, whenever she Michael Scott's it, I like to think of it in my head where she starts a sentence, but she doesn't know where it's going.
00:30:32
Speaker
When she ends it, sometimes she gets this confused look on her face. Like she confused herself. She looks over like, did I do it?
00:30:40
Speaker
Did it make sense to anyone? She's like, did that land? It made sense, right? but' right I'm crying. I'm crying. And then number two is that earlier when you and I were talking about if donuts have sugar or not, you looked over to Kara for confirmation if what are I was saying was BS or not, and she nodded her head to confirm that I was like, right? Yeah. And then you like, oh, okay.
00:31:01
Speaker
I just needed somebody else. It's hard to argue in this group yeah if you're on your own. Because I just think of them as full of sugar. Yeah. And not fried bread. I mean, you might need sugar to make them. I'm not saying you might not. No, because the yeast. But won't taste like sweet. Yeah. It's like a tablespoon of sugar. Yeah.
00:31:19
Speaker
Hell yeah. I'm going to start doing that every time I say sweet. so Sweet. Okay. We'll see how long. Very spooky. she he Okay, you're gonna love my number one. Exactly. Exactly. I think exactly.
00:31:34
Speaker
no I said exactly. No, I know. Anyway, I'm about to give you guys something else to fight about.

Unique Autumn Traditions

00:31:40
Speaker
Specifically, my number one autumn activity that i love doing and wish I could still do is manning a house on beggars night in Des Moines, Iowa for all the jokes that the small children hell like yes tell. And beggars night, Des Moines is really weird, guys.
00:31:58
Speaker
Really, really weird. In the best way. This is probably one of the best qualities of Des Moines. yeah And I don't say that often. They do beggars night instead of Halloween, which is the day before Halloween. You want to know why?
00:32:09
Speaker
I'm sure that is like rooted in some racist scary... No, it's rooted in alcoholism. Yeah. It's because kids used to get hit all the time because people going to Halloween parties would get too drunk and then they would hit kids when they were trick-or-treating. So that's why Des Moines has bankers night.
00:32:23
Speaker
Isn't that awful? Wow. That's also why we don't have cream trucks. Yeah. I remember moving to when I moved to Iowa when I was 12, I was like, I was so excited the whole summer. I was like, who where the hell are these ice cream trucks?
00:32:38
Speaker
And then also was so confused when we had trick or treating the night before Halloween. Yeah. And so, yeah, learned that. Yeah. But Des Moines. We're safe.
00:32:50
Speaker
Des Moines does this cool thing where you are supposed to either tell a joke or do a trick. Yeah. You have to fucking earn your candy. You do. and love And the smallest kids sometimes make up their own jokes.
00:33:02
Speaker
Oh, so good. And they don't make sense. They don't make sense. that They're hilarious. That's a great, I love just asking any five-year-old, like, tell me a joke. Yeah. Yes. I remember there was one as a kid on a trampoline when I was nannying in New Zealand. And he said, knock, knock. I said, who's there?
00:33:21
Speaker
And he said, rain. I said, rain who? And he said, sorry. Sorry for falling on your head.
00:33:32
Speaker
forget dad jokes we need the like compilation yeah book of jokes from children under five yeah right
00:33:45
Speaker
that's nice that was a good yeah it was great so uh halloween activity yep a halloween activity you're right Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. One of your top three Halloween activities and fall continue. Yup. Excuse me. Autumn.
00:34:00
Speaker
Autumn alliteration. Yes. Don't say it like that. You agree with me. So alliteration. Thank you. Yeah. My number one actual autumn activity. See that alliteration. Hmm.
00:34:15
Speaker
uh it a a yeah autumn activities anonymous yes it's where the really factual people go um basically either one of you i don't know you got them all right sorry i won't interrupt you again
00:34:36
Speaker
all right so oh i thought she was gonna do it i thought she's gonna be like knock knock knock knock Knock knock?
00:34:48
Speaker
Is this your frickin' number one? Knock knock. wish I had more sounds on this board. Knock knock. Oh my God. Who's there? Interrupting Cal. Interrupting Cal. Anyway, whatever. yeah ah didn't want to interrupt you. being polite.
00:35:05
Speaker
That has no place here. I understand. Politeness? Yeah. Yeah. Shit. You picked a weird day to start being polite. Yeah. Where are we? My number one actual autumn activity. Yeah. is um kind of similar to apple orchard, but it does not have to be an apple orchard. In fact, I think some apple orchards can be really one dimensional and like boring. Yeah.
00:35:32
Speaker
I like a good farm yeah where they've got all the activities in the world, the really weird ones, like not just corn mazes, though I love a good honorable mensch corn maze at night getting lost.
00:35:46
Speaker
Scaly. Haunted house. Nope. She listed corn maze. That's right. There are haunted corn mazes. There are also regular corn mazes. But at night, spooky, that makes it haunted.
00:36:00
Speaker
That's right. And, you know, specifically... favorite fall activity of mine autumn activity of mine is going to one of these places and then you find the baby bunnies specifically the baby dwarf bunnies and you look at them with your best friend and your best friend's brother and then you say should we get a tiny dwarf bunny you really consider it. You pick them up. You go ask the people how much it costs. You text your third roommate and you say, hey, I know we have two cats and everything. And there's three of us in a two-bedroom apartment. Okay, but we Googled
00:36:37
Speaker
But we Googled it and this could be totally, we can totally, if we take out the cat litter from the bathroom, we can put in a cage for the bunnies and we could get a couple bunnies and you're like about to do it. Like you're actually like about to send it and then your roommate goes,
00:36:52
Speaker
calls back and says no fucking go no fucking go the fuck are you talking about but he is probably my favorite autumn activity jenna was here yeah i was on a walk a fall walk with jenna and i said hold on a second i have to call them back they're about to make a huge mistake they were such a good price yeah i think that would have been okay ah Yeah, we go.
00:37:16
Speaker
We listen. We did so much Googling before we asked you. Yeah. It's the same. Cats and bunnies. This was before. As talks in the same apartment as any living creature, period. But also. Yeah, this was before Google AI overview. So I think really did our research. We did. yeah And what was the research you looked up?
00:37:35
Speaker
Cats and bunnies make great companions as pets. Yeah. We already had two in a two bedroom and three humans. Uh huh. And one bathroom. And one bathroom. That's important. Yeah, it's important.
00:37:48
Speaker
I think it would have been fine. Yeah. you know, we moved soon after that to a three bedroom. I got a third cap because you broke me down that time. Yeah. Because I was mourning. and i had no will.
00:38:01
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Thanks. But, you know, you know, they say no regrets. Some regrets when it comes to the bunnies. Yeah. There's nothing shopping, you know. Shopping me now. You have two bedrooms.
00:38:13
Speaker
You have a giant closet. No. I can't put a bunny in a closet. Why not? That closet's the size of a bedroom. But it' there's no view. Yeah, the poor thing. What? That's true. That's like inhumane.
00:38:24
Speaker
I mean. The bathroom was fine. yeah bunny yeah If bunnies and cats can be friends, let's see it, Mara. Yeah. It's just like we have no one to rear them with now. It's not the same. Yeah.
00:38:36
Speaker
I'm supposed to raise a bunny as a single mom? I'm already a sign. Yeah. I liked that one. Thanks. but Anyway, that was my number one.

Fall Camping & Conclusion

00:38:46
Speaker
What's your number one Halloween activity? My new number one, because somehow a number two is leaves, which I don't understand.
00:38:53
Speaker
ah My new number one is when you're camping in the fall and you have a fire going when the you know, like when it's fallen, the dip in the temperature like comes drastically yeah and you like get to turn your body slowly like a skewer around the fire because it's just like just cold enough right next to everything. And you leave and it smells like fire and all the leaves around. It's crunchy and.
00:39:16
Speaker
Camping in the fall is nice. Yeah. Yeah. Camping in but the fall is a great autumn activity. the sun sets, you know, like. Yeah. Yeah. It's just like. That's cute. That's good one. You can. Yeah. Should we make our final list?
00:39:29
Speaker
I'll tell you what's not going to be on it. Halloween! Hall Hallows Eve! I want mushrooms on there. Hell yeah! Mushrooms and leaf peeping, man. Yeah, you did a good... i think the hot beverage really clinched it for me. It's nice.
00:39:48
Speaker
Hot beverage-y-no. You mean bevy? Nope. No! Um, Bunnies. Bunnies, yeah. Chokes.
00:39:59
Speaker
That's not real. Bunnies. Looking at bunnies is not an automatic. No, you're not getting it. I explained it. yeah We're not rehashing it. Bunnies are going on there. Yeah, bunnies can be number three. Overrule two to three. No, no, no, no, no.
00:40:13
Speaker
Let's come up with the other things and then we'll see if the bunnies live. Mushrooms. Yeah. And, um... Apple orchard. Man, all I can remember is fucking Halloween. Haunted houses.
00:40:24
Speaker
It's not Halloween! It's haunted houses. The month of October. Um... um
00:40:31
Speaker
fall altar yes the falter i'd like i want that one on the list yeah i think thank you i was like i kept looking at you like there's one yes i think fall altar is good yeah and mushrooms what are your three should we try to pick one of yours haunted house apple orchard we could do that one yeah don't give it to me because you know like okay i think i would pick uh-huh Campfire when it's a little cold, crunching leaves. Over apple orchard?
00:40:59
Speaker
Well, I'm trying to think. Really think about You only have one. We have one day to spend. tis To celebrate break fall. What are you doing? I'm doing the fire. Fuck if I'm going to be around a bunch of screaming children.
00:41:12
Speaker
Are you kidding? Yeah. yeah I think so. I think so. Yeah. Fire! Yeah. There you go. But that's like number three. Yeah. No, I feel like bunnies has to be number three. But bunnies aren't on the list anymore. Okay. Yeah. Oh. Yeah, okay, okay, wait. You have one fall day.
00:41:30
Speaker
Are you going to the farm and trying to get the bunnies? But unsuccessfully getting the bunnies. Remember the end result is you look at them and then you get destroyed. Remember the joy, remember the high? Especially when you're going through the corn maze and we still thought, because she hadn't answered yet. And we still thought there was time. We were planning bunny mommy lives. Yeah, like remember that high of like, we're about to get bunnies?
00:41:52
Speaker
no i have to pick fire yeah yeah yeah i'll just be lying so fire is number three two is mush yeah and then one is falter sure sure yeah i've never done the mushrooms but you guys haven't done the falter so hard to say yeah yeah we could tie the falter and the mushroom uh-huh yes yes yes da yeah so great Yes!
00:42:18
Speaker
Oh my God. yeah actually don't sanction this because I think it's better when three when all three of us agree. Because otherwise we'd just be putting in Halloween stuff we ah left him right. You're seeing the future. You're like, this actually doesn't work for me. I don't want set precedent here. the urge to make one thing in every My Top 3 list from now on to be a Halloween activity.
00:42:41
Speaker
So strong. Yes. love to see you try. but A challenge. Okay. Yeah. I'm so glad Grayson can't talk this episode. Please.
