Zak
Hello and welcome to the Daily Southampton, part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. I am your host, Zach Ego Finch, and today i am joined by Greg. How you doing, mate?
00:00:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'm doing good. Look, one of my favourite types of episodes are these ones where you go out and do the digging and just teach me more about football.
00:00:34
Zak
Yeah, this is this is one of the ones where the fact that I'm hosting should probably be either I've got a run to go on for 15 minutes at the beginning of the episode about probably one topic nonstop, or I've done a bunch of research into something. And today is very current.
00:00:49
Zak
It is having look at the profile of our caretaker manager, Tonda Eckhart, especially where some people have called for him to be hired. Some people have not. Some people say it's a cheap sports republic cop out.
00:01:04
Zak
uh other people look directly at the fact that he's one two on the bounce and we should hire him off of that but there's lots of conversations about it so don't we just talk about the actual guy right rather than rather than like speculating like there's a probably a big chance that they're going to take some time and hire somebody different but like you know i thought it was a good opportunity to learn about the guy who's heading up or under 21's either way so how does that sound greg right
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sounds amazing. can't wait.
00:01:29
Zak
Good. Right, so we'll start at the start. So unfortunately, Greg, we're getting to this point now where all of these coaches are younger than me, which is really upsetting because I'm you know on a stage where I was okay, just about accepted that footballers were younger than me.
00:01:44
Zak
But now the coaches are starting to get younger than me. So born on the 31st of January, 1993. He was born in Germany. That's all I've got.
00:01:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great.
00:01:56
Zak
I think in the middle Rhine section of Germany, and I'll explain why shortly. So there is also a bit of a a player profile for him, but he seemed to play sort of semi-professional of the fifth tier, and he seemed to have played whilst he was also doing coaching, and he played for a total of seven games where he scored twice as a central midfielder.
00:02:19
Zak
He played for Arnold Wesser, in the Mertens-Hellenliga, which is the Middle Rhine League, or the top flight of the Middle Rhine State. So that's why, i'm assuming, that's that's how he ended up.
00:02:33
Zak
That's probably where he was born. So that's the fifth level of German football. But he's been involved in the other side of the game significantly more.
00:02:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:02:41
Zak
And... He fits a lot of what I'm like now starting to deem the sports profile, right? And you'll see why but in a minute. But he started his career as a match analyst in 2011 at 18 for Germany until 2014. Whilst he was also doing that, he was also supposed to be the head of scouting. It was his first job four for Fortuna Cologne from January 2012.
00:03:10
Zak
to 2013. Obviously, there's not really a lot of information known about that. I don't be really recognize any of the players at that point. So there's not a huge amount there until he gets his first assistant job at FC Cole in 2013 for their under-17s. Now, you'll know FC Cole, Greg, as the place that we brought Damien Downs from.
00:03:29
Zak
And you're going to start to notice a lot of patterns as we start to talk about this guy for why I'm deeming it the Spores profile.
00:03:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
<unk> Okay.
00:03:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:03:39
Zak
So when he was there as an assistant, the under-17s managed to get seventh with nine wins, nine draws and eight losses. And rising to third in the 14-15 season, they won 16. And then the season after that, they dropped to ninth.
00:03:58
Zak
So you had an all-right spell there. Again, he's assistant youth football, right? So it depends how much you want to... you put into it, but he even himself later goes on to talk about how different youth football is to senior football, right?
00:04:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:13
Zak
So either way, he was successful enough to then get a move into the Red Bull setup, which is you know, A multi-club model. So it's not surprising that you know he's had a he was maybe hit up by us because he understands how those work.
00:04:30
Zak
Especially where he worked with the under-18s and 19s in Austria for Salzburg in the 2016-2017 season, helping them win the UEFA Youth League that year and also the Austrian under-18 league.
00:04:44
Zak
So that's like with European counterparts, almost like the under-18s. I don't know what you'd call it now. It's like recently the game of X-Royal Madrid, right? was part of like the Premier League to international something.
00:04:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:54
Zak
It's like almost like an Australian equivalent to that.
00:04:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:57
Zak
Or just like generally UEFA teams. So obviously winning both the league and also i'd also like this weird European Cup puts you pretty good stead.
00:05:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
okay
00:05:10
Zak
And what does that mean if you play, if you are involved in a club that is part of a multi-club model where you aren't at the parent club, Greg. You get a move to the parent club.
00:05:22
Zak
So then he was moved to the under-19s Leipzig at the beginning of the 2017 season.
00:05:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep. yeah
00:05:29
Zak
He didn't quite do as well as he was, you know, as in when he was at Salzburg. He helped the manager there to secure fourth-place finish. And then that was kind of it.
00:05:40
Zak
Like, and I lost track of what he was doing. was still assistant there, but it was really hard to get like results, like looking at the results for those pages. Unless I'm going to go and find all the individual results.
00:05:51
Zak
The page for the season and goes information. And then like 18 to 19, nothing. So, which is always really, really helpful.
00:05:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:01
Zak
Especially when we do a daily podcast and I need to try and get a lot of this research done and make sure it's accurate and verify it as well. So it doesn't matter, though, because he ended up moving to Bayern Munich in 2019, which obviously, quite a big perfect job, right? Quite big deal.
00:06:15
Zak
Everyone knows Bayern Munich.
00:06:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:06:16
Zak
He was an assistant to Mirosav Klose. So obviously, you know that name from a footballing term. Do you know why that name is relevant from for referencing to Saints?
00:06:28
Zak
i I'll repeat the manager that he's in charge of again. He's in charge of FC Nuremberg.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:06:35
Zak
Good, I'm glad that you, glad you take in all the information I share with you.
00:06:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, wait, it rings bells in the distance, but I can't, I'm not piecing together a link.
00:06:38
Zak
It
00:06:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
it It's sports, right?
00:06:45
Zak
it was when I failed miserably so to to accurately say the word Nuremberg over and over because I couldn't tell if if the club was actually Nuremberg or not, right?
00:06:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, yeah.
00:06:55
Zak
But that was the club we took Kaspiander from and the manager who let Kaspiander go to us, he said it would be good move for him.
00:06:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:07:02
Zak
as opposed to, I think it was like somebody else, like Tony Cruz or somebody's brother turned around and said that Yanda probably shouldn't have moved there because we're not as good as where is where his level is. But yeah, so so again, like you're starting to see the crossovers, right?
00:07:17
Zak
People, obviously, a lot of the the crossover is the fact that Germany. but But, you know, that that's actually that's actually like a direct Saints link early on.
00:07:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:07:28
Zak
So he was there for just under a year where they managed to get third. Jamal Nsiala is in that team as well. And then August 2020 saw him move on from Bayern Munich to... Where do you reckon he moved to, mate?
00:07:42
Zak
Do you know he has championship pedigree, sort of?
00:07:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was at, I did know this, is it Barnsley, one the major names
00:07:51
Zak
You're right. Actually, she's off there. But we'll we' talk about this after a little bit of a break and a word from our partners at Biomeek.
00:08:40
Zak
ITO. So we're back, Greg. And where I left off, it was 2020, August. we You know, pandemic's in full swing. Barnsley are in the championship. And a coach known as Gerhard Struber joined them.
00:08:54
Zak
That coach is now the coach of Bristol City, by the way.
00:08:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:08:58
Zak
You'll start to notice that pattern crop up quite a lot as well.
00:08:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:09:00
Zak
as Wow, the championship really does just have the same group of managers. So, he was interviewed at the time and Gerhard and worked together at Salzburg. He was the under 16s coach.
00:09:12
Zak
I was working with the under 18s. We had one year together in Austria and kept in touch for the last three years. It's a pleasure to be working with him. The lure of English football is always a key selling point for ambitious young coaches who are keen to test their abilities in some of the most exciting leagues in the world.
00:09:28
Zak
Obviously, you know, can't see we're doing a little bit better, eight Unfortunately, Gerhard only managed to survive until the 6th of October before being replaced by another current championship manager, mate.
00:09:41
Zak
Valerian Ismail, right? I was in charge of Blackburn.
00:09:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:45
Zak
Yeah. So, they actually had a cracking...
00:09:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
The merry-go-round continues.
00:09:49
Zak
Oh, mate, it gets even better. So, they had a cracking season, though. and They finished fifth and, unfortunately, lost out in the playoffs to Swansea City. However, they basically went on to do a... How do I describe it? I guess at the moment you describe it as a Sheffield United.
00:10:09
Zak
can't stay with them into the next season for a little bit, despite Ismail then going to West Brom. so So, you know, massive disruption, manager gets moved, and this season was much, much worse for them.
00:10:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:10:22
Zak
They finished 24th and were relegated. And Carlton Morris of now Derby County was their top goal scorer mate in the championship that season with seven goals. Now, bear in mind that we have been pretty poor this season and Adam Armstrong has scored five.
00:10:37
Zak
I should show you you how bad and rough their season was.
00:10:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah that's crazy.
00:10:42
Zak
But yeah, Eckhart wasn't really going to stick around for all of this. He decided to leave in the January and he joined Genoa alongside Alexander Blesent. So that new manager bounce, though, as it often does in the top leagues, didn't really do much. And Genoa were relegated into Serie BRB in 2022. So July 2022, Genoa, those are two dates, mate. That's a date and a name.
00:11:11
Zak
What do you think happened in July 2022 at Genoa?
00:11:16
Zak
Let's see if you remember how, because all of this, to be fair, it is all linked from profile information that I've done previously. can see you Googling.
00:11:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh Oh no! but I don't know. hit ring It's ringing bells.
00:11:29
Zak
That's fine.
00:11:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's all ringing bells.
00:11:31
Zak
so So one of the things that that people brought in sports for, if you remember rightly, was that he oversaw a promotion. And that promotion was in Italy, and that promotion was Genoa.
00:11:42
Zak
So in Italy,
00:11:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:11:44
Zak
je July 2022, Sporz became the global sports director for the group that included Genoa. And obviously things started to change for the better at that point. But that is the start of Eckhart and obviously his association with Johannes Sporz.
00:12:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:01
Zak
So that season was much better. Bledon was is also replaced in December and was replaced by the Italian Alberto Giorgio. Villardino, they managed second and were promoted back to top flight football.
00:12:16
Zak
Their first season back in top flight was a much better one. 2023 to 2024, saw them finish in 11th place with names such as Jed Spence on their team sheet.
00:12:27
Zak
So, you know, good quality. 12 wins, 13 draws and 13 losses just to have an even spread across the board.
00:12:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:12:35
Zak
But what we would have given to come 11th after, you know, going back up, right? That would have been the dream.
00:12:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:43
Zak
I'm pretty sure it's one place above what you actually said we'd end up getting, mate.
00:12:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
but We don't talk about that. There's no need. There's no need to bring it up.
00:12:51
Zak
No, no, but it is funny.
00:12:56
Zak
2024-2025, little bit worse for wear. So they don't do as well. I think it's like 30th they finish. However, this season's a bit weird. Jed Spence goes back to Tottenham.
00:13:09
Zak
They get in Mario Balotelli, just to add him into the story. And Giardino is replaced in November with Patrick Vieira.
00:13:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:13:19
Zak
Yep. He would be the last manager that Eckhart worked under before his eventual move to Southampton.
00:13:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And this is where the links of the air is going to come to say, right. Hmm.
00:13:31
Zak
I was more talking around the absolute merry-go-round of managers that you're right about. Like I was talking about top flight quite a lot, right? When we were talking about sort of like the Sam Allardyces and this or the other, I didn't realize that like half of the championship managers currently have just run than every other championship club. Like at this point, i know there's no loyalty in football, but it's just how many different hats do you reckon you've got in the rooms of half of these managers? It's nuts, you know?
00:13:59
Zak
So, Yeah, it's that's when he ended up, obviously then after that, joining us, where he joined to be the manager of the Under-21s. Yeah,
00:14:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
We had an impeccable record.
00:14:10
Zak
yeah he returned to to youth football after both a crash course in the championship, Serie A, then B, then Serie A again. And in those 10 matches that he took charge of before becoming caretaker for us, he had five wins, four draws, and only one loss in Premier League 2.
00:14:27
Zak
And also one draw in the PLT International Match Cup, which you'll be very aware of, Greg, because you went to that game.
00:14:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was good. enjoyed it.
00:14:38
Zak
So, yeah.
00:14:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
But they're doing with the assist. What more can you offer?
00:14:41
Zak
exactly that. So the rest, they say, is history. With two wins on the bounce with 100% record for the senior squad thus far.
00:14:52
Zak
George from the Echo had some words to describe him. and described him as detail-oriented, leaving no stone unturned. Which, of course, you know, says a lot.
00:15:05
Zak
But to be honest, it's the profile I'd expect more of a noir detective than a guy running a football team.
00:15:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
it feeds It feeds into exactly the same patterns like you alluded to earlier of a Johan Spohr signing, right? He was an analyst.
00:15:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
He is data-driven.
00:15:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
He is, you know, no attention to detail. We alluded to the fact of the report that he's probably a bit of a character that you know drives to get something out of the players. And it's, yeah. Yeah.
00:15:24
Zak
Mm-hmm.
00:15:39
Zak
But he's also talked about mentioning very well the differences between the types of football he's playing as well. So there's a lot of, obviously, like, oh, how would this guy know? And he's he's like, I understand that the differences between sort of like under youth football, there's significantly more goals than there are in top flight.
00:15:57
Zak
But also I've worked in the Italian league where basically there are often a lot of games where a goal is scored and that is it because everyone just shuts up shop.
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:16:06
Zak
And so like that is his, by the looks of it, his key focus for us is to kind of shore us up at the back. And he's been given like I think want to say a little bit of tactical rope to play around with. but I imagine that he's probably not been told to deviate too far from what the players know currently, which kind of plays into...
00:16:25
Zak
what you've spoken about him so far and for your observations, right, that essentially guy is just bringing it back to basics because that's what's needed and alternatively bringing in sort of different names and voices to kind of,
00:16:40
Zak
We set that stuff up, like having the captain back on the field, for example. Obviously, lots of the youth players have opinions on as well.
00:16:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:16:47
Zak
Cissé, who's obviously had a debut in Japan, you know, is is one of the rising stars in UPL2, describes him as big on detail. He's a very good coach. We've had results since he came in and went a few games unbeaten. It's been good under him.
00:17:02
Zak
it its Good, good, good and good is is what I got from that.
00:17:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:06
Zak
So happy days.
00:17:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's the media training you get at youth level, right? It's just even Juric style. Yes, yes, no, yes, no.
00:17:14
Zak
Yes, yes, no, yes, no, exactly.
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:17:17
Zak
i Yeah, so want to talk about sort of trying to get all this information as well, because that kind of stuff is important. And how little there it has been, but also how interesting it's been.
00:17:30
Zak
But we'll talk a little bit more about that after a word from our partners at Lancaster.
00:17:36

00:17:59
Zak
And we are back. So you probably noticed, Greg, this isn't it as long as we usually spend on a manager's profile. And the reason being is that the information to try and get has been significantly more difficult.
00:18:11
Zak
Because currently, if you Google his name, or you try and look up his name in the usual sources and bits and pieces, is there's no information on what part of agency he's from. Again, like wouldn't even have his birthplace because I don't think he's been as prolific in the various different parts of the game to kind of have that information recorded.
00:18:31
Zak
But also, the problem is is that a lot of it in the moment is just like the same, essentially, article pasted 30 different times over 30 different websites of just being like, he's the odds-on manager to take over Southampton.
00:18:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:45
Zak
We'll have to see how he gets on. He's won two games so far. Yay.
00:18:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:18:51
Zak
so so yeah I've kind of had to cut the meat away from the fat little bit. So hence the reason I've had to kind of look into when like, you know, one of this includes, which will be in the show notes, like an expert from a, he did with Barnsley when he joined and stuff like that. Because again, it's all very sort of, there isn't a huge buzz and profile around him. Because again, the guy's only bought like 32 pounds.
00:19:16
Zak
And on top of that, his managerial career so far has mainly been at youth level and an assistant level at two clubs. But, you know, I'm not going to say, but no don't no disrespect to Genoa or Barnsley, but they're not exactly going to be, you know, massive and have loads and loads of media attention.
00:19:33
Zak
But what you can say is that, like, again, pretty good pedigree to be able to kind of, you know, work your way up sort of, from pretty low down, you know, also randomly have an amateur, but then to be able to get into a multi-club model that's quite big, that's quite important, everyone knows the Red Bull teams, or at least know that they are you're aware of them, to then obviously at one point get, you know, an assistant job at Bayern Munich, and then, yeah,
00:19:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
like
00:20:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a lot of experience at a young age, which is good promise. don't know, it's all like say, at assistant level or youth level, but... is still experience. And like you say, he acknowledges the difference between you know the styles of football and the leagues.
00:20:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the fact that he has assistant manager experience at this level at the championship probably undoubtedly helped him
00:20:24
Zak
Yes.
00:20:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
masses And then, you know, we talked before about the step up between youth and senior football and how challenging that is for some players. I'm sure for a lot of coaches, it's the same, but having that background with that time in the league is really valuable, even as an assistant.
00:20:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's, it's fascinating.
00:20:44
Zak
Yes, it's good and bad as well. right That's the that's the good the the important thing.
00:20:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:49
Zak
It got to a point where the playoffs the playoffs then didn't do that well, but I don't think anyone was really expected Barnsley to kind of go up to the Premier League at that point. and So he had to suffer you know a really, really bad next season.
00:21:02
Zak
He did leave halfway through, but then got offered a job elsewhere. And then kind of had to go through the same thing with Genoa, except from top flight and stayed with them as they then got promoted back out into top flight again.
00:21:14
Zak
for eventually coming over and starting on a new new challenge completely. I think there's been some reporting around him and there was an interview talking about how the position for his current job was the hardest interview he's ever done.
00:21:26
Zak
since's the know And I think that part of that is more more around the academy. And you do wonder, is actually harder to work at the Saints Academy than it is to work for the first team because of how you can't mess up our academy.
00:21:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's no secret.
00:21:38
Zak
It's all we've got. Yeah.
00:21:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
i was going say, it's no secret our academy is a highly sought-after and well-run thing that continues to produce talent at, frankly, an unbelievable rate. And, you know, even with some of the sort of moves we've made to bring in younger players from other teams and sort of hone them to our youth level.
00:22:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's still impressive and it's still such a so sellout feature. So you're right.
00:22:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's...
00:22:06
Zak
Tyler Dibling still made a bunch of, like, regardless of how well he's doing at Everton at the moment or not, he was a hot commodity.
00:22:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:12
Zak
he was bought for an extremely impressive amount of money for an academy prospect. The academy is incredibly really important to the club. Like, it's the one thing that they know they can't really afford to mess up.
00:22:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
And not just that, that was last season, but also this season you've seen Jay Robinson come to the forefront and solidify himself as a regular first-team player.
00:22:26
Zak
Mm-hmm.
00:22:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've had, what, two other, three other debuts in from the academy coming up with the Barnaby Williams, Cam Bragg.
00:22:38
Zak
More
00:22:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
like you said, Cissé, like that line from the academy to the first team is an important part of it.
00:22:41
Zak
than that, Nick Williams well
00:22:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so because of that, of course, they're going care a lot about the academy and how it's going. So it's, you know, it's not like it comes, I guess that's why they have the confidence to move that forward, right?
00:22:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because they've been so strudent with that pick with to take over the academy that that trust, you know, extends to the first team. It makes sense.
00:23:08
Zak
Yeah, it's it's kind of, you know, we saw that kind of happen to a lesser extent with Russk last season, although at that point I think it was more, who do you give this job to? and And he kind of stepped into that position. But yeah, I think it's, I'm not saying we should hire this guy straight away, sign him up, make him manager.
00:23:26
Zak
But I do think that a lot of people are being, are immediately jumping to conclusions and saying, oh, well, we need somebody that's immediately, you know, going to have to get this, that and the other. I wouldn't be surprised now with, if the rumours of Trollope are going, Trollope going are true, if they end up, if he ends up staying on in the coaching staff in the senior squad, if he's made such an impact.
00:23:49
Zak
Whether or not that's as the manager or under somebody else, you know, I think that, that level of stability is probably going to be useful. And also that level of cohesion is going to be needed as well, right? Because this is the big thing that I have about putting together a squad on paper that does, or putting together a coaching squad on paper that doesn't necessarily pay off long term, but,
00:24:10
Zak
So that's all the information that I could find. But again, as you pointed out, Greg, it's more experienced than I think people have given him credit for. Just because it's experienced in a slightly different way doesn't mean that it's not experienced nonetheless.
00:24:22
Zak
Like you've seen how impactful like Gilly was on the sidelines at Wembley and things like that. Like you can't underestimate the role of an assistant manager for one that is persistently hired through youth football in better and better clubs as well.
00:24:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:37
Zak
Yeah.
00:24:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. Absolutely.
00:24:39
