every club, every day. The Global Sports Podcast Network. Hello and welcome to today's episode of the Daily Liberal Podcast, brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Adarsh Ramchand and on today's episode, we are joined by some special guests from the Daily Chelsea team, otherwise known as the Blue Billion Pound Bottle Jobs. Now spending money isn't a problem for Chelsea and can't Liverpool add more problems to them on Sunday?
00:00:31
Speaker
On today's episode, we'll be diving into a preview of the game, both teams start to the season, the key battles on the pitch, and also, in part three, a combined excite of both teams. To help us analyze this all, I'm joined by our Liverpool regular, my colleague Michael Lake. Michael, how's everything? Come on. I finally got given the title of regular now. Yeah. A day or two that I got was getting called in the UV, but I'll take that. Yeah, now I'm looking forward to it. It'll be great.
00:00:54
Speaker
Oh, definitely, definitely. Yeah, you are regular now because you've been on a couple of episodes. And I'm joined by the boys at the Daily Chelsea team. First, map Matt. Matt, how's everything? Yeah, really good, guys. Great to be here and looking forward to to the chat. And also Jake from the Daily Chelsea team. Jake, how's everything?
00:01:12
Speaker
yeah good good good thanks for having us on um yeah i'm i'm shivering about sunday but i don't know if it's uh if it's shivering in fear or if it's because someone may make it a bit cold on the day oh that's a good one see i thought you'd respond to the blue billion pound bottle jobs thing but you've you've got one of your own so we're used to it as chelsea fans Fair enough. Fair enough. um So in part one, we're going to talk about both teams starts the season. Are Chelsea in a battle for the top four? Are they in the title race? And are Liverpool in a title race as well? Michael, I'll come to you first. Obviously, we've spoken lots about Liverpool this season, but how are you feeling about the game ahead? And again, how how do you think we're going to be in this title race? Yeah, i think I think it's a good opportunity this next game. It's one of the first big games we we're going to have. like Obviously, we've played United, but at this moment in time, they are nowhere near being.
00:02:03
Speaker
like a challenge. um So having Chelsea, you guys are on a good run of form. I think it's since that what's a vet game in the conference league qualifiers, you haven't lost drawn a few, but on a good run of form. um I think it's a good, this will be a good test to see what Arnie's about.
00:02:24
Speaker
so you see if he can fully tackle these big challenges. You've got some good players. and But I think if you if we can get our Palmer, um Chelsea lose a lot of their bite. So I think if we can try and look at getting him out of the way and and negating him, maybe getting Graven Burch having a few heavy tackles on him at the start of the game, maybe we'll but have a lot of luck. I think this season's been ah great and we can keep building on it. um Yeah, I'm confident about this next game.
00:02:55
Speaker
Yeah, no, definitely. It's going to be, we'll get onto the sort of the midfield battle in part two of the episode. Definitely Palmer versus Gravenberg will be a key battle. um Matt, I'll come to you first in terms of Chelsea. Obviously there was a lot of noise before the season about Chelsea spending and obviously a lot of new players. But um like Michael said, you kind of just kind of seem to have a settled team now and have started the season fairly well. What are your thoughts on obviously coming into this game, but on Chelsea's Yeah, you know, as in I think a lot of people across the league and in the media, they just love to hate on Chelsea. I think we're a bit of a scapegoat ever since Abramovich came in and Mourinho came in. We started to hate movement and ruffle a few feathers, particularly for Liverpool, Arsenal and United um from about 20 years ago.
00:03:42
Speaker
So people, whenever chefs are in the spotlights and doing outrageous things, ah the British media love to jump on it and Brandos has, you know, cheats or liars or or whatever it may be. um And that's fine. You know, sort of, I think a lot of clubs just wish they were in our position where we had a ton of cash and could buy whoever we want, really. um But alas, yeah, Maruska's changed the club. He's changed the team. And I think ultimately what he's brought is just,
00:04:11
Speaker
a real respect and understanding amongst the players, which has been amazing. He's brought um yeah clearly a game plan for the players and the players know that If they're not good enough, they're going to get replaced because we've got um a lot of depth. And really, I mean, if if we all look about this and I think we'll get into this with Liverpool, particularly for you guys and into the winter months, so there are so many games to be played. And so you actually do need a seriously deep squad if you want to compete on all four trophies um as you go up through through the season. Otherwise, people would get burnt out and injured. So I'm really excited. And um yeah, I think we'll get top four this season.
00:04:48
Speaker
Yeah, and i think I think it's really interesting seeing Chelsea start the season because obviously like there's going to be a lot of eyes and attention, ah new manager, new players. um But, yeah, from Liverpool fans' point of view, I think you guys have started quite well. There was obviously that big result you had against Wolves where I thought Madewicki scored that hat-trick and obviously Palmer's been on fire as well. So, yeah, I mean, obviously that's that's the fear of a lot of Liverpool fans coming in, is if your attacks are going to have one of those games where you just are quite clinical.
00:05:14
Speaker
um But coming to you, Jake, ah again, what do you think of sort of Chelsea starts the season and I'd like to hear your thoughts on Liverpool starts the season as well um from a rival point of view. Yeah, um I mean, in terms of in terms of Chelsea, I think like I was maybe not to close at all. But I feel I think I slightly expected like a good start from us, um not from like the preseason. I wasn't like, oh, my God, we're incredible. But I think more from the city game at the start of the season where we just showed such a maturity for only having, you know, Mariska for four or five weeks so far. And it was so different to how we played under Poch.
00:05:51
Speaker
I was just like, if we turn up like this against other teams, the teams we've got coming up, ah you know, we have played Bournemouth Wolves, um Brighton, obviously, as well, was it like a bigger game we won that for too. um Like, if we keep turning up like this, I think we are going to have a really good start. And it and it showed like that. We have a real identity about us now, which I don't think we had under pot, in my opinion.
00:06:12
Speaker
And that is really starting to to show its benefits. um But again, is the real test is is you this this Sunday. It's our mass ah first big test since City. We've been sort of lucky with the fixtures and the fact that we had a run of games that were a lot more winnable than then um then the games we've got coming up now, but that is the issue is the games we've got coming up now, you know, we played Liverpool, Newcastle, twice, Man United, Arsenal, um Villa, Tottenham, all in the next six weeks. as So we're paying for that sort of slightly easier picture run a little bit now. um And in terms of Liverpool star, I found it quite impressive, to be honest. um Obviously, I think there was quite, ah you know, there's a lot of memes and stuff in the summer was like, oh, Liverpool haven't signed anyone. Oh, well, they actually make a sign and all that sort of stuff. And
00:06:56
Speaker
um And it it's everyone was sort of ready to hate on Liverpool, I think, and everyone was very happy for the Klopp era to be over, so was I. um And we was hoping there would just be a very big adjustment period for your new manager. um And that's just not been the case. And I think if anything, in my opinion, I think in terms of Finishing higher up the league now and winning trophies. I think you've probably improved um I think you're probably a bit more predictable, but you're a lot more clinical and You are like it just in terms of like your xg and the amount of goals you're getting compared to your xg It's so that you're so clinical at the moment and it's almost like if you get an attack, you know into the final third and
00:07:38
Speaker
you are either scoring or getting a big chance. And that's the thing we've got to really worry about on Sunday because we played with quite a high line this season. We do like to play it around the back. And yeah, I'm worried for just how efficient you are, especially in in all areas of the field. I think that's that's what's really impressed me about you is how efficient you are. That's going to hurt us on Sunday.
00:07:58
Speaker
Yeah, no, I think um ah obviously from a local fans point of view, we've been, the XG has been really kind of really clinical and obviously our defense has improved a lot as well, which kind of, we're nullifying teams, we're not making them sort of, last season we were going behind way too much. I mean, Michael, obviously, you know, best as well, like we were speaking about this on one of the other episodes, our defense has improved a lot. um In terms of Chelsea, from your ah point opinion, Michael, what what have you made of their start? I know you kind of touched on it before, but what's the main takeaway you have?
00:08:28
Speaker
I mean, it's a it's the underlying numbers of Chelsea are actually one of the best in in the league in terms of like um expected goals and expected assists. You're actually creating a lot of chances and you're finishing some of them. um I mean, at the top of the league, you've got expected goals and plus expected assists is 26.2 compared to Liverpool, which is 24.
00:08:57
Speaker
So like the really, Chelsea are actually output outstripping everyone in the league. um It's just some, as you said, like the high line, there's some sort of problems that you have to work out. But I think once you get like maybe once you thin down the squad and you know who your starting 11 is and you know who the who the first first team are,
00:09:16
Speaker
and have that sort of like streamlined approach, I think Chelsea could be a real threat. maybe Maybe not this season, maybe that's asking quite a lot of Maresca, especially coming only from Leicester straight to you guys. and He's still got a lot of work to do, but I think once he gets like his feet under the table properly and he is able to kind of implement all of his ideas and get all of his own players in, I don't know whether he'll have any sort of ah a way of doing that because it seems like top boldly is really controlling it but and once he starts to like fully get a grip on this squad I think Chelsea could be a real real threat I also want to point out out the fact that Chelsea have actually used two less players this season than Liverpool even though you've got like 40 people in your squad so he's kind of using using his players which is which is promising
00:10:08
Speaker
Yeah, noda stuff I actually didn't know that. so Interesting. um stuff um But yeah, we've ah we obviously both got two new bold managers in the league. So so it's going to be an interesting battle on um on Sunday. And we'll cover that in part two of the episode very very shortly after this break.

00:10:46
Speaker
Amazing. So like I said, in part two, we're going to cover a preview of the game, some of the key battles on the pitch, particularly in midfield and attack. ah Matt, I'll come to you first. Where do you see support the the way that Chelsea can win this game? What's the key battle that Chelsea will need to win if they're going to get a result on Sunday?
00:11:02
Speaker
I think the main thing is keeping the ball away from you. ah You know, our game plan with Maresca is a lot of ball ball possession and inverting the fullback to make up the numbers in midfield and dominate that ah area. And I think we need to stick that to as much as possible. If you've got the ball, you're really clinical um with it, like Jake said. And so I think the key is retaining possession as much as possible and winning that battle in midfield.
00:11:27
Speaker
Alternatively, if we can't get the ball off you and you do dominate us, then I do actually still think we've got a thorough chance on the counter attack, depending on who Maresca lines up with. um You know, if we play Neto and Sancho, they've both got great pace, as well as Jackson, who loves to bomb up forward. ah So if we release them, we can get on the counter, slide it back to Palmer and score a goal. So I think so that's our main two options, but I'd really prefer us to to dominate you on the ball.
00:11:52
Speaker
Yeah, it's going to be definitely a battle of both teams. Obviously, you want to play out from the back, keep the ball, um attack with fluidity as well. um But I definitely think from a Liverpool fan's point of view, the counter attack is something we're still kind of ah needing to sort of work out. We've obviously didn't sign the number six in the summer, but Gravenberg's been exceptional in that role.
00:12:12
Speaker
Um, when we played forest early in the season, our only defeat, it came from a counter-attack. One of your former players actually had to score in. So yeah, that's something that we're going to have to be aware of. Um, Jake, from your, from your opinion, I think I want to focus on Graven Burke and and we we mentioned Palmer. That's, that seems like it's going to be a big battle to players that are having an exceptional start to the season. Uh, what do you make of that battle? Cause that's going to be a mouthwatering sort of, um, battle on Sunday.
00:12:37
Speaker
Yeah, I think if I was a betted man, I'd put Graven Burke to make a lot of powers and Palmer to be failed quite often. and Yeah, I think Palmer's really, I mean, we we can sort of see, can't we, that Gravenberg is probably going to be given the job of stop Cole Palmer on Sunday. And from from what we've seen from Gravenberg recently, he is probably going to be able to do that. um if If he does do that, I think the interesting thing with us now is that if you stop Cole Palmer, it creates space for other attackers, other attackers who are still are also finishing their charges chances and providing assistance and goals.
00:13:11
Speaker
um you know, Madawake, Sancho um both have a golden and the c assist in their last two games in the Premier League. Jackson has scored, I believe, so six in the Premier League so far himself. um Gravenberg on Palmer, if he is able to to not yeah to nullify him, it's going to create space for our other attackers.
00:13:28
Speaker
But Palmer has, you know, this sort of happened in the Bournemouth game earlier this season. and They tried to sort of man Mark Palmer and, you know, it was three men on Palmer and just wait for him to sort of play the ball out wide. And they contained him pretty well. um But Palmer then again had a massive influence but for the massive, for the big chance towards the end of the game that got us the goal to win the game.
00:13:48
Speaker
um I think it's just very hard to keep a player like Cole Palmer quiet. um He's just going to pop up. he's hit his just His movement, he can find space on the pitch. you know I don't want to compare Palmer to someone like Messi, but he does sort of slow down, wait for a space to come up, and pick up the ball, and he will to annual he' take the ball and try and make a chance out of it. um He's that sort of player, and that might also make him quite hard to man Mark, which I imagine is what Slot is going to do, as we said, with Gunberg and Palmer.
00:14:15
Speaker
um because that could leave government book completely left out of the game if his main job is just stopping co-op armour. No, no, 100%. I think that is going to be a sort of interesting battle. It would be interesting to see how Slots yeah sets up Liverpool. Because from a Liverpool fan's point of view, we're seeing Slots adjust his tactics to each game. um Something that Klopp didn't really do, he was kind of like, just go for it, whatever whoever the opponent is. But we're seeing Slots kind of yeah being a bit more nuanced, a bit more tactical in his changes as well. um From a Liverpool point of view, Michael, um the way where we can hurt
00:14:48
Speaker
Chelsea and um a key player that's going to be influential for us is going to be Trent Alexander-Arnold on that right hand side. Where do you see, obviously he'll be defending, I guess maybe it'll be Sancho or maybe Nkunku, I'm not sure who will play on that left hand side, but um obviously going forward Trent offers a massive threat. So what what do you see like his contribution to the match?
00:15:10
Speaker
i am I mean, in the last few games that he's played in, he's been a little bit deeper than he has been in the past. like He's been sort of in line with the defensive midfielders. That has really helped him this season to be more reliable in defence because he's not having to leg it back half of the pitch to get back and defend. He's only having to go 10 yards to to get back into position.
00:15:35
Speaker
um I think that's really going to help him against whichever winger gets put up against him. Obviously, Sancho is really, really good, and he's finding his way. I mean, he seems to prefer to be on the bench after that little clip that I saw of him where he said to his favourite position, the easiest position to play is on the bench. But, I mean, if he is playing, Sancho is one of those players that he can kind of go either way, but most likely likes to cut inside. Like, inside, like, Gravenberg helps Trent out so much.
00:16:02
Speaker
So there's a chance that we don't go to Man Mark Palmer and we just rely on the system and we will rely on the fact that like whoever the two DMs are, because McAllister might be injured, like it it could be Graham Burch and Jones or it could be Graham Burch and Endo.
00:16:19
Speaker
Endo could be put as the man to absolutely demolish Palmer and just like stay on him. um But yeah, so Trent, like he's, I think his influence will be with a spring encounter attacks, especially cause Chelsea sort of ah play this season has been a lot of possession. Like if we do get pinned back and Trent gets the ball and pings it over the top to Luis Diaz on the left hand side, a seller on the right, ah even a jotter through the middle, even though he normally drops deep.
00:16:47
Speaker
like I think that could be a real way to get at Chelsea um because Slott has shown that he's willing to play with 40% possession this season. We played against ah United with 40% possession and still won three-nil. So I think if that could be a real asset to us, but we're also comfortable having 68% possession like we did against Crystal Palace and Forest. So I think Trent can be really influential in either way of us playing. um And I think that'll be a real real battle on that right-hand side.
00:17:17
Speaker
Yeah, some interesting battles on Sunday. um It's going to be a really interesting game. After the break, we're going to talk combined 11s. Who have the Chelsea boys put in their combined 11? Who have we put in our combined level from a Liverpool perspective? We'll find that all out after the break.
00:17:32

00:18:07
Speaker
do you have a story that the world Brilliant. So, um, like I said before the break, we're going to be talking combined 11th. Now I've got a little rule for everyone. We're only going to be picking players that are available. So from a little provides point of view, I'll pick Allison as much as I'll think he would be in goal for the mind 11, no Allison and no Reese James for Chelsea. Although I don't think he gets in anyway. So.
00:18:29
Speaker
I'm glad you said that. I was going to ask that actually. Just like, is fitness an important part? Yeah. um Yeah, so we're going only fit and available players for this combined 11. Sorry as well, I didn't give you enough time to prepare, but we're just going to go off the top of our heads. um Matt, if I come to you first.
00:18:46
Speaker
on your eleven Yeah, yeah. Well, I did have Alison ah in, but because of the rules, I'm going to actually change that to Kelleher just because when ah when he's come in, he's been phenomenal and a suitable replacement for Alison. I think you're you're almost as strong with him ah when when Alison's out.
00:19:06
Speaker
ah Back four, I've gone Trent, Van Dyke, Cole Will and Kookarela. In the double pivot midfield, I've gone Graven Burch and Kiseido. On the right, I've got Salah. In the middle, I've got Palmer. And on the left, I've got Sancho. And then up top, I've got Nicholas Jackson.
00:19:23
Speaker
and So yeah, so, you know, five Liverpool players, six Chelsea. So a small win for the Blues there, um if we're just stopping with me. um But ah yeah, I think ah obviously a lot of them, I think, speak for themselves. um Maybe the question marks around Sancho, but I think he's been excellent for us in the last um three, four games that he's been for us. And I think he and just has that natural ability above a lot of the players on the left hand side for most teams.
00:19:52
Speaker
Jackson up top just because he's such a workhorse. And I think, you know, sort of if we relate to related to Liverpool, he's a bit of a Bobby Firmino, I think, in the way that he links up with everyone. He doesn't contribute as many goals as the players around him. But he definitely um brings up brings up the best of the players around him. Salah Palmer, you know, it speaks for itself. Carcillo, Grabenburch speaks for itself and everyone else. But I think that's a solid combined 11.
00:20:18
Speaker
Interesting, interesting. But obviously, I'm going to be biased. I'm not sure about the Jackson pick, but I won't i won't i won't comment too much just yet. ah I'll go to Jake first to provide his combined 11.
00:20:29
Speaker
Sure, yeah. So I've gone for Sanchez and Gull over Kelleher. I think Kelleher's got some quality, but I actually think I'll take Sanchez at this point. He's had a couple of mistakes, but I think he's he's actually, he's also had some incredible saves this season. He's performed really well. At left-back, I think I'd put Kookarela. I'd also then have a centre-back ah Van Dyke and Colwill. Although I understand that's two left-sided centre-backs, but and they're both qualities. They can work it out is not an issue.
00:20:56
Speaker
um rather jarringly I imagine I've gone for gusto over Trent. i I think I prefer gusto as a player I think Trent is a midfielder in my personal opinion um especially under club I think he did really really well for you um I just think defensively i't I've never been that impressed by Trent defensively everything else in his game is absolutely world class I would say, but just defensively I don't think he's that good, personal opinion. um Like Matt, I've gone for a double period of a casino in Gravenberg in the midfield. That may be just about one of the most solid midfields you can have in the Premier League at the moment. and
00:21:37
Speaker
with Palmer in front of them as well as the attacker midfielder and then I've also gone for Salah and Sancho. um And then up front I've gone for Nunes. I really love Jackson and I think if Jackson continues the form that he's on now, he's going to really be an incredible striker for Chelsea. But the thing I've always loved about Nunes is although he's not always the best at finishing his chances, he is an absolute nuisance for defenses, an absolute nuisance. and especially for a game like Sunday where the thing to do with our defence is to pull us apart. If you pull us apart a little bit, you'll find space and you'll score and that's basically how all teams have scored against us. Noonez is the perfect player to do that and I actually am a little bit worried about that on Sunday.
00:22:19
Speaker
Interesting. I mean, I actually think there's some questionable picks, not just from a Chelsea point of view, but from a Liverpool point of view. I'm not sure of any of them. I mean, I haven't gotten any of those in my team. He's just so unpredictable. I mean, last season he had the game where he decided to hit every angle of the of the Woodward. So, yeah, interesting picks, interesting picks. Michael, what's your combined 11? Yeah, I think similar to the other guys.
00:22:44
Speaker
The goalkeeper's a weird one. It would normally be Alison, but I would think I would go for Sanchez at the moment just because he's playing regularly. Keller has ah not had that opportunity. He's now gonna for the next few weeks. So maybe after this run of games, he might be in this combine 11. It's got to be Trent there right back. I don't know what you're doing.
00:23:03
Speaker
guto there but it's got to be Trent. Centre backs would be Van Dijk and Colwell. I think Canate has had a really good start of the season and it is a flip of the coin between Colwell and Canate. And similar in Cukarello and Robertson, I don't think either of them have played out of this world, but I will go for probably Kookarela, just because Robertson hasn't really been the same as his ah is this as this prime, so I can't really put him in there. I would pick Graham Burke, definitely. I'd like to do an honourable mention to McAllister for the other pivot. He's been very, very good. I think there's question marks about his fitness, so I don't know how, if I'm allowed to put him in, so I would probably go for Kaiseido.
00:23:46
Speaker
Um, I definitely do Palmer in the ah attack of mid. Salsabai hasn't been anywhere near as good. ah Left wing has to be Luis Diaz. a He has been on fire. He is He's a little magician. He's got a great chant that I've recently heard. I don't know if any of you heard it. it' It's is's really catchy. um ah To the but Bella Chow theme. Give it a listen if you haven't already heard it. Salah on the right, obviously. And then I put Jota the slaughter. But I can see why you would put Jackson up top. But I will i personally, I'll put Jota. Interesting. OK, nice. um but you Everyone's got really different teams and like different different players in different positions. um

ah For my team I've gone for Keller and goal although I do think Sanchez as well as he's had his moments this season But he is I think he's starting to establish himself in the Chelsea goal and obviously last season and you guys are petri rich So it was kind of like a a bit of a moment for him. um Right back, I've gone Trent. Yeah. JJ, I don't know what you're doing with this. Set it back to how I've gone. Sorry. Set it back, I've gone Van Dyke and Colwell. I think as well. Agree with Michael. It's a flip of the coin between Colwell and Canati. But I just edged Colwell. And then left back, I actually have gone for Robertson. um And that's more just like just that's purely Liverpool bias. That's not what I'm finding out.

um In the... I've gone for, yeah, two holding my fielders, Gravenberg and Quesedo as well. um Completely agree with that. um Number 10, I've got Gopama. On the right, I've got Salah. On the left, I've got Diaz. And then on the front, I've got Jota. So it's a similar team to my Gopama. I've gone for Robertson in the left pack and Kello Ringo. So a bit more Liverpool bias, I can't lie, but... there's ah There's also a shell for Madeweike, but, I mean, Salah wouldn't... Salah's in there all the time, but Madeweike started well. like He's tied well. He's giving a shell for it.
