Introduction and Apologies

00:00:00
Speaker
Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome to another episode of the Goblin Lore Podcast. um Sorry, we have we've missed a couple of weeks lately. i know this I think we gave a heads up heading into this holiday season, though we're not quite to Thanksgiving yet here in the U.S. um Just stuff tends to come up this fall, and Hobbs is still taking some time off, and So the last few weeks, we've had some sickness and I've had just a couple of rough days at work. Nothing in particular bad, just the workload.
00:00:34
Speaker
was weird or things were broken or just a lot going on there.

Importance of Mental Health Breaks

00:00:40
Speaker
um And this week too, in fact, it is just me. um So I wanted to, I had an opening. I had ah i had ah some capacity at the time tonight.
00:00:51
Speaker
um So I decided I wanted to We'll record this episode so we'd have something on the feed. Ultimately, you know we we take time off when we need time off. ah ah Mental health is a big focus of our podcast. hear're If you're new here, this is your first episode, or you're relatively new here, that is that is a thing we talk about a lot. And so we we try to practice what we preach. It can be hard.
00:01:15
Speaker
can be easy to say, here's what you should do, and then... not cut yourself the slack, even though this is the advice you give other people. But so for us, we try to take that time off when we need it.
00:01:26
Speaker
We have been taking some time off, so do apologize for missing that. But ultimately, um our own our own health and our own and just enjoyment of this is important enough that we don't want to burn ourselves out.

Solo Episode on Time Spiral Block: Planar Chaos

00:01:40
Speaker
But again, I had some capacity tonight, so I am coming for but i'm coming to y'all with a solo episode um and am going to continue kind of the thing that Tiana and I started a number of weeks ago and then just sort of left off because of.
00:01:57
Speaker
all the various things. I want to talk about the Time Spiral block story, specifically tonight, moving on to Planar Chaos. Our last episode was about Time Spiral.
00:02:08
Speaker
um Again, if you're relatively new, like we we would normally be talking about current story, but... we haven't had any current story for a little bit. And unfortunately it it looks like it's going to continue that way. There are a lot of universes beyond products as part of magic. And but we have enjoyed a number of them and they can be a lot of fun, kind of regardless of where you're at there, what they aren't is magic story.
00:02:35
Speaker
And so when we're a heavily story podcast, those particular products don't give us a whole lot to talk about. Um, some Sometimes we can talk about some of the mechanics and the metal stuff and those things that we may or may not do um with some of these sets.
00:02:52
Speaker
But one of the things we've started to do after asking some questions and and getting some good feedback from the community, there was multiple folks suggested, you know, talk about the story we have.
00:03:02
Speaker
Magic is a game that's been around for like 30 years. Yeah. Yeah. Ninety. Ninety three. So more than 30 years at this point. Ninety. Ninety three. Ninety four. Ninety four.
00:03:14
Speaker
So, you know, we've got plenty of story ah to to go back to. So we have done the invasion block, if that's something you're interested in. We did that fairly recently. That was a lot of fun. That's where we started. That was part of ah one of the suggestions was, hey, why don't you cover invasion? And that was a ah block that meant a lot to Tay and I both and in different ways.
00:03:33
Speaker
think we were both fairly active with the game at the time. And so that was a lot of fun to talk to that story and then to kind of do a Melthos set reviews where we kind of talk about the mechanics and the story within the cards and how the mechanics of the cards sometimes tell the story and kind of all of that stuff. And so the goal is to kind of do that with the Time Spiral block at this point.
00:03:55
Speaker
We talked Time Spiral story last episode. I'm going to talk Planner Chaos story this episode, and then we'll we'll move on to Future Sight story and then talk cards at some point down the line as well.
00:04:12
Speaker
So just an overview there. One of the reasons we went to Time Spiral block is for me personally, to be honest.

Personal Connection to Time Spiral

00:04:20
Speaker
I think Taya enjoys some of these cards, enjoys some of this stuff, but it's more, i think it was more for me. This is easily my favorite block.
00:04:29
Speaker
ah It's one that I had a lot of fun with when it first came out. I had taken a large break from the game and then came back right around when Time Spiral came out.
00:04:39
Speaker
which because it was actually times the original Time Spiral came out after the original Ravnica block. And so I came back to play Ravnica. I just was kind of getting back into the game and Ravnica was the new set.
00:04:50
Speaker
And that was a really, really cool set. And I was like, oh, well, maybe I'll be back into Magic now. And then Time Spiral came out and it was a really big one too for me. But then this was pre diagnosed social anxiety and that caused a lot of burnout. And I dropped the game for another number of years, but time spiral block. One of the big things that I love about it, that is also one of the reasons why it's honestly kind of a problematic block from a game design perspective and a community engagement perspective is that it is so, so dense with references to magic's history.
00:05:24
Speaker
Um, To the point where it is very, very... very impenet It could be very impenetrable for new players, especially from a mechanic standpoint. There are so many different mechanics in Time Spiral and Planar Chaos.
00:05:40
Speaker
And then Future Sight, the way that set works, which we'll talk about more in detail when when we get to talking about the cards. But that one, I want to say the statistic is that it that set alone had nearly as many mechanics as the rest of the game put together. Like like keyword mechanics on the cards, it's a mess from that standpoint.
00:06:00
Speaker
But as someone who had been playing the game from nearly the beginning, I started with Revised, which was 94. So yeah, the game started in 93. I started just the first, the next year. Played through Revised, which came out right after Unlimited. So it incorporated some of those things.
00:06:15
Speaker
um I started right after Legends came out, or I think Legends might have come out right after we started. It was right around then. was like, just to give an idea, you know Ice Age was a brand new set when I was playing. And so there's a lot of those early sets.
00:06:29
Speaker
um were that's how I started Magic, was playing those sets, getting those cards, and ah playing with my dad and his friends and a few of my friends. I was relatively young at the time.
00:06:41
Speaker
So Time Story Block being ah throwback to a lot of that, um there's some gaps in in my playtime, but I think the the story of this block goes well.
00:06:55
Speaker
goes to the way back as much as they can and and tries to grab things kind of from all over, but also from Invasion previous, which was really when I played the most. And so there's just a lot of fun references for me. Basically, every card in this set is super fun and interesting to me and and is a very possible.
00:07:13
Speaker
A very big reason that I'm such a Melthos enjoyer of the game. both I love the Vorthos, the story, the characters, the lore aspects. But I also really like the Mel, which is kind of the mechanical things and enjoying how cards build into combos or have one-card combos, as my friends and I used to joke about.
00:07:34
Speaker
certain cards that would do stuff. Had multiple abilities that synergized with themselves. But then that's sort of the the the melding of that in the Malthus thing where you have cards that have mechanics that tell the story or that have that flavor within them. And so this block is rich for that.
00:07:54
Speaker
um But yeah, that's a lot of preamble. And I start getting to

Time Spiral Story Overview: Teferi's Challenge

00:07:58
Speaker
the story. And so Time Spiral kind of, i mean, a very, very brief overview of that. Time Spiral starts several hundred years um after the invasion block.
00:08:11
Speaker
I can't remember the exact number, but we kind of covered that there. This is... It it features Teferi as the main character. In Invasion, Urza was hoping that the Teferi would help him like fight the Phyrexians, and ultimately Teferi decided this whole Phyrexian thing is Urza's war and that he wasn't going to deal with it.
00:08:32
Speaker
And so Teferi... phased out Shiv and um another part of his his nation, I can't remember the specific piece of it.
00:08:45
Speaker
um but So he phased out a couple nations that were Teferi sort of felt some protection protectiveness over. so And so he just said, no, we're we're not going to fight this war. You can fight your own wars.
00:08:57
Speaker
And he phased them out to... to keep them from being destroyed um during this invasion. Time Spiral Teferi is thinking that oh a shorter amount of time had passed. I want to say he thought it was going to be 100 years. It turned out to be 300. And ah and the the areas that he phased out are not going to fit back where they were supposed to because it had been too long.
00:09:27
Speaker
And so if if they are able if they are allowed to crash back into the plane rather than merging together and fitting nicely, it will possibly destroy the plane. And because dominaria because because story implications and things, Dominaria is the center of the multiverse.
00:09:45
Speaker
It could destroy all worlds, not just Dominaria. So that sets off the adventure of this block, sets off Teferi in the first set, trying to um set things right.
00:09:56
Speaker
He, at the end, ah closes the shivan rift and discovers that he had lost his spark, this costume, his spark. Um, so there now he and, um, Joyra, who he runs into, uh, who's still around and and Radha, who is a newer, uh, character, a younger character who has been born sort of in this, uh, post-apocalypse, uh,
00:10:23
Speaker
Dominaria and Venser as well as another person that they they kind of found through the events of the first book. um They're left to kind of continue figuring out how to resolve these rifts because there's all of these rifts that are from all these different apocalypses or apokali or however you would pronounce the plural of apocalypse.
00:10:43
Speaker
um from all these different disasters. Like, through the whole course of Magic's history, there's just been so many different disasters. And that's... And major, you know, major events and major... Just all sorts of major things that have caused these rifts.
00:10:58
Speaker
And so, now... We have, ah but this book kind of starts with Jaira having some preeminence while Radha is back in Keld with Teferi dealing with his lack of godliness. it took To quote from, ah forgot to to mention as well, one of the big resources we've used here, which will be in our show notes, is a website called ah Multiverse in Review. It's actually a blog.
00:11:23
Speaker
where someone went through and it's a great resource for, for magic story. This person has read all of these books and has uploaded scans of a lot of just older things and has reviews of like all the magic novels, all the older novels, all the older books before they started doing strict novels and these comics and has kind of has collected as much random ephemera and stories and pieces of magic lore that they could and has kind of collected this all in this blog.

Joyra and Venser's Mana Surge Crisis

00:11:54
Speaker
And so this is a great resource. It's been, I read these books when they first came out, but it has been a while. So going to use this to kind of help guide the high level ah highlights from the book for this.
00:12:08
Speaker
So Joyra, there's Shivens who are attacking them. Joyra tries to create a barrier of glass shards to protect the group.
00:12:20
Speaker
Ultimately, though, due to mana surges, because of Shiv is returned and all magic is a little out of control, and she winds up killing these attackers instead of just creating a wall to protect them from the attackers. This causes the companion Chorus to go mad, um leads to him breaking an artifact that Teferi gave him, and he blows himself up.
00:12:42
Speaker
Eventually they do manage to make it to Gitu because they're trying to build this ambulator device that Venser has sort of created to help with the the rifts and to help with this this problem.
00:12:56
Speaker
Unfortunately, after you know they get there after several weeks and now all of a sudden there is some voice that is speaking to Venser trying to distract him in and dangerous situations.
00:13:08
Speaker
ah going to ah They sarah teleport, Joyra and Venser teleport Urborn, which is suddenly freezing. um They get divided.
00:13:18
Speaker
Joyra is found by Jodah, the Archmage Eternal. um He's a character from the... He shows he comes back in the the game, of course, he has comes back in Dominaria when we get to the set just called Dominaria, which came out a few years ago, which is kind of fun that after how many years um that we finally got a set just called Dominaria. But I think he also came back during Dominaria United or one of the sets during the most recent new Phyrexian wave when we were back on Dominaria for a couple of sets. so
00:13:51
Speaker
So Jota is a immortal human who is not a planeswalker due to events. he He first shows up during the Ice Age block. So again, this is the ah them pulling all of these, even in the book, in addition to the cards, just pulling all of these characters from all over the place.
00:14:10
Speaker
ah it So introducing Jodah, who here Eventually, Avencer gets captured by Lord Windgrace. He is a planeswalker, one of Urza's titans, one of the nine planeswalkers that went, including Urza, to the original Phyrexia during the invasion with the attempt to destroy that plane to aid in the defense of Dominaria.
00:14:37
Speaker
So Venser is captured by Lord Windgrace. he has these wing great Lord Windgrace has these Glade Hunters who are currently warring with Phyrexians who are reawakened in Urborg thanks to Venser's Ambulator interacting with the Urborg Rift.
00:14:57
Speaker
Windgrace separates Venser from the a voice temporarily, and we learn the voice's name is the Weaver King. he is a former Ill doll with tremendous telepathic abilities. He became a shadow creature in the Wrathy Overlay, and that is another just several references to historical things in magic. The Wrathy Overlay was part of the invasion.
00:15:21
Speaker
There was a plane called Wrath, um which the Weatherlight crew actually visits several sets before the invasion. Wrath was an artificial plane created by Phyrexia for the purpose of the invasion.
00:15:34
Speaker
So in the invasion block, you kind of had the first set was literally called invasion. This is when the Phyrexians show up with ships. They had ships that could open planar portals.
00:15:45
Speaker
So it was kind of just a invasion in the more, in that sort in a more typical sense, like, fantasy-ish, but in a fantasy approximation of what we could see in the real world.
00:15:57
Speaker
The second set plane shift is when the plane of the artificial plane of Wrath, which was made of flowstone, a flexible ah material that could be controlled by powerful casters. I think the Phyrexian Primarch on that plane, who's that is not their title. I can't For some reason, I can't think of the title right now.
00:16:19
Speaker
Envikar. The Envikar of Wrath could control the Flowstone, but it like intersected with Dominaria and merged, and that's the over the planar overlay they're referencing here.
00:16:30
Speaker
um In addition, from that block, from the Tempest set, I think those yeah the it was in Tempest that took place on the Plane of Wrath. there are There was the mechanic Shadow, which in a mechanical sense says this creature can can block or be blocked only by creatures with shadow.
00:16:51
Speaker
So it functions similar to flying, except that they can't interact. Like a flying creature can block a ground creature. They can at least interact. The shadow creature is entirely removed.
00:17:03
Speaker
from non-shadow creatures. They cannot block creatures without shadow, they cannot be blocked by creatures without shadow. They sort of exist in this phased, half-phase-out world sort of... well, sorry, phasing is actually a different mechanic in Magic, but it's nothing to do with this. but Again, this is where these mechanics are kind of coming back. And so there's this this person who was worked for the Phyrexians, was kicked out of his his clan, became an Ildal, which there's a whole title thing that I'm not going to even try to get into about what the relationships they had and what clan they belonged to.
00:17:43
Speaker
So this kind of identifies this guy. He's going to be one of the threats in this story.

Sacrifices to Close Rifts

00:17:48
Speaker
After this, Windgrace goes and finds Teferi, Joira, and Joda. After he learns about the danger of the rifts from them, he contacts Freilis, who tells them that this unnatural cold and Phyrexians have also come to Kelb.
00:18:04
Speaker
planeswalkers are great at work um to each work on their own rifts there's a rift in and they there's a rift in Urborg there's a rift in in Skyshroud slash Keld as well.
00:18:19
Speaker
And then, you know, they these two, the last time he mentions here, the last time these two met up was, as I referenced earlier, when the Nine Titans went to Phyrexia. So this is the last time that Freyleson and Lord Windgrace had seen each other was when they went to Phyrexia, and that was not did not end well for folks there.
00:18:39
Speaker
um So it makes sense that they kind of had maybe didn't want to re relive that. So back in Skyshroud now, Joyer discovers that Freilis has taken control of their local Slivers to fight the Phyrexians. The Slivers, again, is another thing from Wrath.
00:18:57
Speaker
um they They came to Dominaria during the overlay. Another, like a big fan favorite creature type too. And so this was the first time they had been brought back, I believe. No, they would, Odyssey Block.
00:19:09
Speaker
That's right, they were found there were some in Odyssey Block as well. But then they brought them back here. In addition, in Time Spiral, did some weird things with them in Time Spiral Block. like Like a lot of the things in Time Spiral Block, they did some weird stuff with the slivers.
00:19:23
Speaker
um So then Freilis asks Joyra if she can ah bring Radha back, because Radha is a Kelden elf, like he's from here.
00:19:35
Speaker
Radha had been helping a fight Kelden, you know, these these forces different forces that were invading Skyshroud. So Freilis would like her help to deal with these Phyrexians now.
00:19:46
Speaker
um but these events But events move too quickly for that to actually ever happen. Jodah and Venser hatch a plan to use Jodah's magical caves and Venser's ambulator to save Joyra.
00:19:59
Speaker
But this allows the Weaver King ultimately to follow them to Skyshroud and take control of both the slivers and the Phyrexians. We see Venser gets gets stuck with his ambulator in the Blind Eternities while he's traveling there.
00:20:13
Speaker
He meets Karn for a moment, who um convinces Joyra that she doesn't need to get Radha. But Karn...
00:20:24
Speaker
she is She built the emulator to try to reach out to her friend, saddened by Joyra's betrayal of her promise, Freilace leaves because she didn't actually bring Radha. Unfortunately, it turns out Joyra had not actually been able to reach Karn, but it was still just the Weaver King impersonating Karn.
00:20:39
Speaker
After this encounter, the king is visited by a mysterious planeswalker, who we learn is the one who enabled the king to interact with the real world after getting stuck and commands him to attack both Freilis and Windgrace. This planeswalker will come back, would be familiar for people who have seen, but doesn't get unmasked in this, specifically unmasked in this book. So we'll cover that and in the future site book, I believe is, but if I'm remembering correctly, who was again, I hadn't read these books in years.
00:21:08
Speaker
Freilis takes back the power that was sustaining Skyshroud, because this was a forest from Wrath that was going to be located relocated somewhere on Dominaria during the overlay.
00:21:20
Speaker
Freilis, being l in elvan sort of interested in elves, decided to bring this forest of Skyshroud, which contained a group of its own elves, too ra to k so that it would be a little further away. i believe this talks about it a little bit down here somewhere too. It is a little bit further away from Llanowar, which was where she sort of is housed. The elves who sort of owe their allegiance to Freilis mostly there, this would allow these two groups to be separate, but close so they're not stepping on each other's toes and competing for space, but close enough to to aid each other.
00:22:03
Speaker
except now it becomes a problem because she needs to take this magic away to fight these Phyrexians, which causes the forest to wither. um She uses that power to close the rift and to kill all the slivers and Phyrexians, wherever she dies in the process.
00:22:20
Speaker
Joda's been trying to reach Freilis at this point, was forced to use his teleportation tunnel, and just leaves the story angry at that point. Another thing there, those two have some history. Jota worked with Freilis during the Ice Age block to end the Ice Age. like That was one of the big things there. There's a number of other details there. At some point, we may ah talk through the story of those sets. Those are weird ones, too, because you have... but just a way to strip There was a little bit of story in the original set, but there wasn't really doing a lot of story back then, so a lot story is more retroactive.
00:22:57
Speaker
But there were three novels, which I really enjoyed when I read them years ago, that cover a lot of what happened in that set and sort of a flesh out some stuff. But one of the big things was Joda working with Freilis to cast the world spell that ended the Ice Age and and did some other stuff ultimately, too.
00:23:15
Speaker
And so those two had a pre-existing relationship from that. So then they we go back to the Urborg Rift, um which was linked to the Skyshroud one, having both been created by the Wrathy Overlay.
00:23:29
Speaker
The Urborg is where the headquarters, Volrath Stronghold, Volrath being previous on Envikar, when the overlay actually happened, the Envikar was...
00:23:43
Speaker
oh, I'm totally blanking at his name. He was a member originally a member of the Weatherlight crew who decided to defect, become the leader of Wrath, kill Volrath, and take over that part of the invasion plan.
00:23:58
Speaker
So when that stronghold, literally the name of a set is Stronghold from that block, when the but when the stronghold came to Dominaria, it was overlaid into Urborg,
00:24:12
Speaker
And I think that is what created this rift here. So that there was another significant site of power um on Wrath. the The Skyshroud rift was created more because Frehley's moved Skyshroud from where it would, quote unquote, naturally have landed on Dominaria.
00:24:31
Speaker
think that's what created that particular rift. In any event, the Urborg Rift now doubles in activity since the two were linked and one is closed.
00:24:42
Speaker
The crew, along with a newly arrived act real Karn, convince Windgrace that he has to follow Freylyse's lead. He imbues some of his essence into the land and sacrifices himself to close the rift.
00:24:54
Speaker
um Some of that does actually sort of come back in Dominaria. There's some some references to to Lord Windgrace and his his presence still in the land of Urborg. But then continuing this story, you know the next plan is for Karn to travel back in time before Baron's obliteration of Tulario to seal the rift at that point. So again, more stuff.
00:25:15
Speaker
Tulario was destroyed during the invasion block by Baron. He had lost his wife much earlier in the but earlier in the story before the invasion block.
00:25:26
Speaker
But then his daughter, who was part of the Weatherlight crew, um is killed in the the first phases of the invasion. And so he, in a lot of depression and anger, um goes and destroy brings buries her his daughter next to his wife and then just destroys the entire island where they're at, including...
00:25:47
Speaker
excuse me, the entire invading army of Phyrexians there. So Karn is going to go back because there's a time rift there based on Karn's history, which again goes way, way back before the invasion.
00:26:00
Speaker
um Karn actually was created by Urza in one of Urza's many, many plans to stop the Phyrexians. Karn is a little bit of a wild one.
00:26:12
Speaker
So he was built... to go back in time to stop the Phyrexians before they could become the Phyrexians. Urza was, there's a whole lot of issues with Urza.
00:26:24
Speaker
But so Karn, that particular rift, when he he attempted to go back in time at one point, which broke time on Talaria, that's actually how Jor-Ira became immortal. Like Joda, she's another non-planeswalker immortal,
00:26:40
Speaker
And Joira's Urza's fault. Joda is not Urza's fault. but So Karn is going to go back in time to try to close the rift associated with him. That's why he was going to to do that.
00:26:53
Speaker
um And in present day, because of the other circumstances, it's currently untreatable. So Karn wants Venser, whose plinns-walking ability has slowly developed over the course of the story, to witness these events from the blind eternities so that Venser will have a better understanding of how the multiverse works.
00:27:13
Speaker
um So while Karn is working, Venser is contacted by the Weaver King, who wants to take over his body to gain planeswalking powers himself. Luckily, Venser brought the Power Stones that he used to to power his Ambulator.
00:27:27
Speaker
He is able to teleport away with just the surface of the Power Stones, leaving all of the energy behind to burst out and consume the Weaver King. While that's happening, Karn succeeds in closing the Tolarian Rift, but we just read the sentence, but is then suddenly gripped by dot dot, dot, some kind of corruption.
00:27:47
Speaker
What, parentheses, what could that be? And then he planeswalks away and tells Venser, telling Venser not to let anyone follow him. And of course, if you're familiar with the story, several years in real time, real and our real life down the line, we have the return to Mirrodin where we discover the Phyrexians are back and that Karin has sort of brought them there. And that's to this whole thing.

Conclusion and Future Storylines

00:28:13
Speaker
ah So then the the epilogue of this this particular book, we have Venser, Joyer, and Teferi. i Happy to learn the intruding Ice Age ended, um but try to figure out what to where to proceed from here. There is still some more rifts. They're not really sure what to do.
00:28:28
Speaker
And then sort of the cliffhanger ending is Jessica showing up, angrily demanding to see Karn. Jessica being a planeswalker from events, I believe in the ah Odyssey, ho of the block after Odyssey was um Judgment, Torment, and but i think it was Odyssey Judgment, Torment.
00:28:51
Speaker
So it's from that block, um Jessica kind of shows up and then we'll get into again that in the next book that is kind of part of the next phase of this story of closing some of the more but about modern rifts in the story.
