Introduction and Special Episode

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome to another special episode of the Goblin Lore Podcast. we yeah We are here, and that makes it special. I was just going to say, is it, yeah, was there something that's making this one special that I wasn't aware of? i mean, you're broadcasting from the depths of hell, apparently. that That makes it special. I just say just its very existence. We don't need to put any special pressures on it.
00:00:53
Speaker
Okay, ah so just us being here at all. Exactly, exactly. um and And before we can get too terribly off the rails, I'm going to introduce myself. All all three hosts are here. We've all spoken. um but i am Alex, phoned on nothing. um That habit is weird to break. In the Goblin Lord Discord on the internet... No longer part of the other the hell site.

Meet the Hosts and Personal Stories

00:01:24
Speaker
I just live in hell, the place, I guess, right now. Hopefully next week things are quieter, ah cooler after we have a maybe a big storm on Thursday. I don't know. I'm a little nervous about getting to work in that, but we'll figure it out. Yeah.
00:01:42
Speaker
My pronouns are he, him. And we have ah we have an opening question. We just kind of want to say something that we've kind of been doing lately or some fun. And i literally last night made lemon bars for the first time in my life. um Never baked anything before. But I read a book for my book club for my work that is book club at my work that we're meeting this week. It was a fun, cozy little fantasy adventure about a character who's a baker. And the author included a recipe for the lemon bars that she made. And I decided to try to make some this weekend so that I could maybe make some this week and bring them to book club.
00:02:16
Speaker
And I just they turn out actually pretty good. um I need I definitely need to bake the crust longer because my oven is bad. So I went the amount of time they said and it didn't get done. But other than that, like they taste lemony.
00:02:29
Speaker
wasn't bad. So I'm counting this as a success. And I will inflict the remainder of this pan on my Pathfinder group tomorrow.
00:02:38
Speaker
inflicts yes yeah i sent them a message this week that said i hope you guys like uh both lemon bars and being experimented on so someone else i want to jump in sure i'll go hi i'm teah you can find me on blue sky at teah transcends or on the discord um pronouns are she, they. And the thing I'm going to talk about recently is the game that I've been working on, Goblin Warrens, which is an idle clicker ah goblin breeding game.
00:03:10
Speaker
It's something that I put out about four weeks ago or so now, and there's a couple of people still playing it.

Weather and Local Stories

00:03:20
Speaker
But ah if you haven't heard me talk about it on Blue Sky or heard about it on the Discord, you can check it out.
00:03:27
Speaker
ah My link is on my um Blue Sky page to link to the game. And just recently got some new art last night. I got new art for it for the title screen.
00:03:40
Speaker
Commissioned from a queer artist, which I always like supporting rather than any kind of AI slop for sure. Pay your artist people. um But yeah, happy to ah be here with both of you tonight. And it's it is ah about 72 and sunny here today. So I feel I feel so bad for you. Yeah, it's a

Teah's Game: Goblin Warrens

00:04:06
Speaker
little chilly. ah yeah did Before our our last guy goes, tonight did I tell you two about the local while we were out there um in Tacoma who tried to apologize to me about the weather? At the time, the sudden hadn't come out a ton. It had come out a little bit. But it was at the at the donut shop and in Tacoma, Fusion Donuts. If you're in the area, that place was incredible. um
00:04:31
Speaker
But yeah, this person was trying to go, we have this like Janulai thing going on. And I'm like, it was 90s and humid back home. I don't care what you call this. This is great. And then I back home and we have this 90s and humid still.
00:04:45
Speaker
um I also say too, I've been asking Taya what a clicker game is, especially when it's goblin. bre Do I just click on a bunch of goblins and they have sex?
00:04:55
Speaker
No, you, you, you build goblin habitats and they do that themselves. You don't have to, you don't have to direct them to do that. oh okay You build goblin habitats and then they make more goblins and then you spend more goblins to build bigger

Hobbs' Projects and Excitement

00:05:11
Speaker
habitats. And Eventually you start taking over universes and then dimensions when you have too many goblins.
00:05:17
Speaker
Okay. is it's just So it's just in text form though? so it's i've Yeah, it's just so it's just a little text-based game. It's heavily inspired by Anti-Matter Dimensions, which is another text-based idle clicker.
00:05:31
Speaker
very inspired by that game uh which i was introduced to by my girlfriend ah but i i threw a goblin theming on it and uh yeah goblins conquering the multiverse is kind of the a theme of the game.
00:05:46
Speaker
Okay. Okay. i I mean, I appreciate all of that and everything I've seen. I just did not know what a ah clicker game was as I revealed my ignorance once again. ah really really should check pick on it. i You shared like ah like a beta version of it with us. And it was while I was at my my local writing convention last month. And I spent like a couple full panels just sitting there breeding goblins while listening to people talk. It was it was a good time.
00:06:13
Speaker
Yeah, I've added quite a few features since then. ah um But I need to come up with some more stuff to add for the people that have played through everything. There are a few people that have played through everything.
00:06:27
Speaker
Well, I am Hobbs Q. My pronouns are he, him. I can be found on the internet as Hobbs Q still, at least for for now. um And what what are we talking? Just something?
00:06:40
Speaker
Just anything? Just something you want to share. um We are getting an entire new floor to our house.
00:06:50
Speaker
like, ah Jen and I are getting a master suite, which was something that we had always talked about doing but with me moving to private practice at the end of Wow, like three weeks away, i will be done with my current job. I guess that's another big thing. and moving to private practice. And I, I don't have a current office. And we'd always, we bought the house with the intention that we were going to remodel the third floor. And so we are doing that. And this is going to be it's we are going to have a, a like sitting area landing spot, ah a walk in closet, a full bathroom and a and a bedroom for us.
00:07:32
Speaker
taking over the top floor. If you've, for anybody that's been to one of the barbecues or seen my house, Jen and I are getting an entire top floor to ourselves. And we just had the design meeting and got to see all of their like 3d designs, which is actually pretty incredible.
00:07:48
Speaker
So I'm super excited. So, and I'm also excited to be leaving my current job and moving on. So my only concern about all of the things that you just said, Hobbs, is that I know a lot of your Lego is currently stored on that third floor. It's not getting

Magic the Gathering Announcements

00:08:05
Speaker
evicted, right? You've got a spot for it. Well, so my office is going to become a big spot for it for for one thing, especially for display. ah In terms of storage of sets incomplet ah andcomp incomplete, so we're actually going to have storage behind the walls of this new area too.
00:08:25
Speaker
Yeah. So there's like ah short wall. So it's got going to be like crawl space type storage, but we are going to have areas that will be more accessible. So I'm guessing extra sets may just get kept there as well. Any secret passages behind bookcases? Are you going to stop just short of that? I mean...
00:08:42
Speaker
If there was more room and we could find a way to go between floors, I would love to have a secret passage. I've always wanted one. So storage in the wall sounds just short of that to me, which is fair. Like most people don't even get that close. Yeah. Yeah.
00:08:55
Speaker
I do believe that there's like a push place on the wall that you're going to push to like open up the door too. So yeah. So there is. so Yeah. It's just short. you're You're just inching right up to it. Just like me. Just short. Yeah.
00:09:10
Speaker
All right. Well, perfect. With that perfect transition. we to what? See, if you ask the question, Hobbs, then people realize that it wasn't a perfect transition and they can't like imagine. It's like the the whole monster movie thing where it's like so the monster is only scary until you see them because the monster in your imagination is scarier than the one you can so be shown. The transition in your imagination is smoother than the one that's actually like shown, I guess. i don't know. The number one issue with the movie Signs, which was a horror movie that I enjoyed two-thirds of.
00:09:45
Speaker
And that would be the moment when they all of a sudden showed aliens that I no longer did i did not need to see. but ah so all of that aside, our topic for tonight, is ah there was there was a recent...
00:10:02
Speaker
i don't know what was this head again. Magic on Amsterdam. Magic on Amsterdam. There was a recent magic on Amsterdam. Thank you. That had a whole lot of announcements, whole lot of stuff. And we're like, you know what?
00:10:15
Speaker
That sounds like a good thing to talk about because there's just a bunch of things in here. When you announce 23 things at the same time, it's real easy to to miss something. And so including what looked ah at the outset like an event in Minneapolis. Yeah. Because it squeezed in in between the four magic cons. All of a sudden, they popped up this thing that says Minneapolis, June to 20th.
00:10:42
Speaker
And it's a pro-tour level event. Yeah. Yeah. It's an invite only to play there. Is it going to work? Like, I remember there was a pro-tour here like five years ago that you could actually hook on. It was probably before COVID. It's more than five years, Alex. Even if you didn't get an invite, you could walk in there, but it wasn't like there was going ton of like there'd be a little bit to do yeah that's probably pro events usually work is there's usually like spectator spaces and people might gather to play some pickup games at the that's how they've tended to work in the past i don't know if that's how this one's gonna work but okay well it's probably a moot point for me because based on the weekend it is it's i think that's the same weekend my writing convention's gonna be That's also, that's my anniversary weekend. So I'm glad that it isn't an actual Minneapolis con because I probably wouldn't be able to travel for
00:11:38
Speaker
It's also the weekend of Grandma's Marathon up in Duluth. Nice. i so you know Somehow, Hobbs, you know I appreciate the fact that we haven't you know had a chance to record a whole lot lately, but we are not missing a beat. It took us seven minutes to get everybody introduced. We we say we're going to talk about all this news, and the the first thing we talk about is the thing that none of us care about.
00:12:05
Speaker
Well, I mean, I care about the fact wering an anna soldiers i care about that they announced something in Minneapolis. This is true, but it's like we could have talked about anything first. And this is where we started.
00:12:18
Speaker
i so I have it up on my screen. It says Minneapolis. I don't understand what else I'm supposed to talk about. It's right there. Well, that's fair. I guess transitioning from that... For folks who are going to you know qualify for a pro tour, like, hey, I guess there's information about that. You get to come to Minneapolis in June, which is usually not hell, unlike right now in July.
00:12:43
Speaker
But the I guess we could talk about the events. They're actually doing four Magic Cons next year. And two of them are not in the U.S., which is two actually amazing. the first of The first Magic Con in Asia. Yeah. Period. End of sentence.
00:13:01
Speaker
Yeah, and it's in Tokyo. I would love to go to that MagicCon, but yeah and but then then I thought about it more. And it's like, if I had to take a week to travel to Japan, would I really want to go play Magic or would i want to go tour Japan some more?
00:13:15
Speaker
And I think I'd want to tour Japan more than play more Magic. That's totally fair. So hilariously, my wife and I had the same discussion about Amsterdam because it's in December, which typically is the time of the Christmas markets. and The European Christmas markets are saying that we've both been very excited. And my wife was just like, yeah, but then we should just go. i was like, OK, that's fair. And there is a magic on. Yeah. Yeah.
00:13:44
Speaker
Yeah, that's that's fair. am unlikely to attend. So we have Vegas again, as we always have. In August, which is a great time to visit Vegas. Great time. Yeah, if you're not August is one of the premier months. Yeah, we couldn't have swapped that with the other one.
00:14:03
Speaker
yeah Detroit in February that's super familiar with Michigan, but I have to assume they have somewhat colder February. Yeah, they do. They get and they get, you know, cold and they do get snow. And I mean, these things all make sense if you think about it from a logistic standpoint. It's when they can get the cheapest rates.
00:14:29
Speaker
That's fair. That's fair. But that's the slate. So if you are looking for for ah magic events, we do have one in the Midwest again, which is kind of cool, and it's not Chicago. Um, if you want to go to Detroit and I'll see the first in Asia and Tokyo in May and then Vegas in August and Amsterdam again, that's two years in a row for Amsterdam. That's, that's neat.
00:14:49
Speaker
Well, three. Okay. Amsterdam's been, it's proven to be a very popular site, I think for, for the event. And I do think that this probably is one of those things of where it's very centrally located. Yeah. That makes sense. Yeah.
00:15:04
Speaker
And so, yeah. So those are the events. And and I think the the important thing or the interesting we didn't get ah a list of any of the Command Fests, um which is we saw there. Those are seeming to scale back. And as we saw with Tacoma, and not well advertised. Like people didn't know they were. happy Yeah, they they aren't very well advertised. It's kind of a shame, but but it was fun. I had a great time there. I did too.
00:15:35
Speaker
i really enjoyed I really enjoyed it. yeah i think i think that the list I think what I'm targeting is waiting for the official announcement um for a date, I guess, for Shoebox instead. yeah And replace one of the events with that.
00:15:53
Speaker
yeah Yeah, we're not planning on doing a MagicCon next year, but I am planning on doing shoeboxes, assuming they actually have it. That would that would be cool. that's That is, if if you're not familiar, that's ah that's an event that happened here in the Twin Cities in March, was it?
00:16:09
Speaker
It was in March. Yeah, over they did it in St. Paul in a space I've never, like a little convention space I've never been in, which was neat. Yes, the same ball convention center attached to the hockey arena. So yeah, it's a smaller than the Minneapolis convention center. Well, I mean, it's actually decent size. We weren't using very much of it. Yeah, it it was a decent size, but it seems like it would be substantially smaller than the Minneapolis. But for for an event like that, you don't need that much space. You'd just be taking a little slice of the convention center anyway.
00:16:38
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, i think it is, you know, it's, I think that there is room for these ah other events, right? Like other groups running them with different focuses and that's great. Yeah. Fantastic.
00:16:49
Speaker
We, we will probably get the command fest line up later. I just looked cause was like, I thought that was announced fairly late. It wasn't until March this year that we got the list. So it'll probably be early next year again that we'll we'll get the Command Fest list

New Magic Sets and Mechanics

00:17:03
Speaker
for next year. And we'll see. I definitely shoebox I would i would do. And it depending on where the Command Fests are, i I'd consider doing another Command Fest. That was a lot of fun.
00:17:13
Speaker
All right. Well, as long as we're talking the schedule, why don't we finish out what's on the schedule for next year? We got the announcements for the three in-universe sets. ah Well, a couple of things to six sets versus seven.
00:17:26
Speaker
Yeah. Nice. It's a nice scale back, I guess. Seven's a lot. Seven is way much. keep forgetting that there's seven. It's so ridiculous. You gotta remember, it was four for three decades.
00:17:41
Speaker
um Yes, it was four for three decades. um And then we got some supplementals, but the key was they weren't standard legal. All seven this year and all six next year are all standard legal as well. Yeah, this also means we get things like conspiracy and stuff like that have no space on the schedule anymore.
00:18:04
Speaker
So if sets like Conspiracy or Battle Bond or or neat sets like that, there's just no space on the schedule for them now. so Correct. The closest we're getting is Mystery Boosters, right? We are getting a new Mystery Booster that launched at Gen Con.
00:18:20
Speaker
Mystery Booster Commander. It's not Mystery Booster 3, but they they did show us a couple of cards from it. uh, very excited to, uh, yeah, well, Jen Con is that breaks rules.
00:18:36
Speaker
Yeah. Right away. Breaks rules. Um, which is kind of an interesting, you know, Alex, I, I thought of you when this set were, or when this card was released. So they did show a couple of the cards for this, um, mystery booster set. And,
00:18:53
Speaker
there there's an ability on the otter that is its name is uh tolebo tolebao lock rascal which says a deck it's a blue it's a blue commander that says a deck with this commander can have an instant or sorcery cards of one additional color not in its color identity and any basic land cards what is interesting is that there were cards that did a similar rule break in Gavin's Unknown Events.
00:19:25
Speaker
So there have been a couple that were like, if you're running this and it's the command and it's your commander, and you can include basically... like a certain type of any other color sort of thing. They tested this out in that format, in the unknown format first. and it made me think of the old unsets.
00:19:43
Speaker
So that is one difference with the mystery boosters this time, though, is the tree first two did not come with new cards. They were all reprint sets. This one is going to have like 50 something new cards, I think the announcement said, which the way that rarities work in mystery boosters, mean, if any of these are really good, they're going to be expensive because ah rares um because mystery boosters have like 1500 cards in them. So any one card is rather rare.
00:20:12
Speaker
I thought that the Mystery Boosters before did have um ones, but they were... that They had the non-legal cards. Yeah, they had playtest cards. Playtest cards, yes. those were new Those were new cards, but they didn't have new Blackboard legal to play in anything. Actually, anything.
00:20:33
Speaker
And what's funny, too, is they also... ah So we got two cards. So one was... Joven and Chandler Chandler. Yep. Which is another card based off of a, uh, an unknown card. As far as I, I know, that's what I was going to say. um yeah, that is my understanding based on, um, knowing the unknown cards that this was, uh, this was one that came from that, but is now technically not even, it's not even that we're, cause they did this with like the, the four, like the, the, the, the K and T and,
00:21:08
Speaker
Well, and they they had the stuff in, wasn't there um one of the sets in the Phyrexian Invasion where you had like Squee and... or there Yeah, that's what I was just talking about. The team-up cards. The team-up cards, thank you. Because yeah these two were legends from homelands, Jovan and Chandler, which is fun to see a homelands nod.
00:21:29
Speaker
Widely considered the worst expansion in the game, or least up there for one of the worst. So Alex, this is going to make things interesting. um I mean, I guess it's, it's, this is, so this is what I thought. it Joven and Chandler was literally the name of an unknown card.
00:21:48
Speaker
but it does not have the same ability, mana cost, or anything else. we We already have at least two cards that have an unknown card that is the exact same name as a Black Border card.
00:22:01
Speaker
And i mean it makes it really hard. I can't remember the specific ones. I thought previously, though, we talked about this, that they had changes in grammar.
00:22:11
Speaker
changes in ah like grammar Not the one one in particular that I kind of want to put in a theoretical

Upcoming Magic Themes and Storylines

00:22:21
Speaker
spear conspiracy cube I want to build does not it is exactly the same name as a card that was printed in blackboard before this card was printed. what which one is that yes and i we had this exact conversation i can't remember a while ago i'll we'll see if i'll see if i can find it while we're recording but i don't remember it off top my head yeah because i remember that there but but it is interesting because now there are technically two versions of joven and chandler after all these years yeah um
00:22:51
Speaker
Yeah, so, um but getting on with the rest of the year for next year is ah we have six sets. Three of them we don't know yet. One of them is almost assuredly X-Men. They they've pretty much all but hinted that'll be the next, the Marvel set for next year. we have a lot of Infinity Stones still.
00:23:13
Speaker
Yeah, we two. Four more. Four more. Yeah, if you're if you're tired of Marvel, I've got bad news for you. um But the first set next year in February is a new plane, Noctis, which is the Atlantis-themed set that has been rumored for a long time.
00:23:37
Speaker
ah they get They released a trailer for it that had some... um concept art and some other stuff. It looks like a really cool set. Waterworld isn't necessarily my cup of tea, but it looks like it's going to be very pretty, if nothing else. And it'll be interesting to see this kicks off the new um story arc after Reality Fracture. So ah it'll be the beginning of a whole new story.
00:24:05
Speaker
yeah And I really like, I really appreciate like them building into a new aesthetic too. Like that is a sort of plain aesthetic that just hasn't been. I mean, it shows up a lot in like sci-fi. You'll get the water world. But we haven't really, we haven't had something like that in oh and Magic.
00:24:23
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, and then in June we get the set that I'm excited for, Kamigawa Titan Breach. Someone got some Ikoria into your Kamigawa. it yeah Which looks like it's going to be one of the side effects of the reality fractures, possibly planes colliding together. we don't know exactly how this happened yet. but I've seen Pacific Rim. I know how this yeah happens. Yeah.
00:24:49
Speaker
Yeah, um but yeah, that's exactly what we've got. We've got Pacific Rim, the card set. ah We got Kaiju and mechs, that means we get goblins. Yeah.
00:25:00
Speaker
We know the goblins of Kamigawa are 100% going to be involved in this. Oh, yeah. Goblins are the perfect size to be mech pilots. You don't need a big cockpit for them. Correct. Correct.
00:25:12
Speaker
And they're engineers. Well, I mean, the goblins. Yeah, we've got goblins that goblins are artificers. We got them. We got this. yeah This is our moment to shine. so Yeah, I am super excited for this set, though. They they they showed again, they showed a a launch video with some concept art and we don't know much else about it at this point, but it looks freaking sweet.
00:25:37
Speaker
And then the last set for next year is technically a new plane, but the story goes all the way back to Mirage, and that's Zalfir, the plane that's only existed since the end of the Phyrexian arc as its own plane. As its own plane, correct, right? Yeah, but the the the origin it all goes all the way back to Mirage. And boy, has this made some of the worst people in Magic upset that there's going to be an Afro-futurism ah which is for it. Yeah.
00:26:09
Speaker
yeah As far as I'm concerned, that's, that's just a bonus. Yeah, it is. It's a bonus. Yep. Gotta love when the worst people are upset. Well, I mean, they're already upset because there's ah another, you know, the, with, with the Hobbit right now, they're reprinting some of the original Lord of the Rings cards and they brought black back black Aragorn. So,
00:26:32
Speaker
Stay mad. They're going to stay mad. But yes, Zalfir is now its own plane. It's reentered. It was it was phased out for a little bit to ferry. Just that's all we need to say. Yeah, little a little bit phased out as part of the invasion and now exists again for the first time. so It exists it in the shell of what was mirrored in. So it inherited the five sons of mirrored in.
00:26:57
Speaker
Which is cool. Like, yeah, I am so was so excited when the art for the when we got to see some art and we already got to see the the five sons.
00:27:08
Speaker
Yeah. now ah Looks like it's going to be pretty dang neat. Again, they released it. They released an announcement trailer with some concept art and some really cool visuals. So check those out. They're all on the announcements page. The three announcement trailers, if you haven't seen them.
00:27:28
Speaker
ah I mean, this is a really exciting within universe. It is, yeah. And we know nothing about the story that's coming up, which is also exciting. We have been we have been on the same story arc since the end of the Phyrexian invasion.
00:27:43
Speaker
ah And so very close to Reality Fracture coming out this year and finishing that. and So we got all new start to look forward to and Max and terrible people being upset.
00:27:58
Speaker
Yeah. Cool black people. It's in a good year for lore fans. And well, I would say it's got very good potential, right? um We know for a fact that looking at things like Zalphir, they hired consultants.
00:28:16
Speaker
We know that they did that last time they were on Kamigawa. um you know think that we've seen that commitment i think being willing to do that set like you said alex you think they found any atlantean consultants for noctus i i you know they may have there's some of them out there still that i mean wouldn't it just basically be like it's it since it includes homerids you just put lorelei in charge of the set and they just call it a day right um so Like, I'm so excited for homerids.
00:28:51
Speaker
Some say they're the goblins of the sea. No, I got nothing other than There won't be goblins is not this, most likely. What do we... um A couple... of foot Oh, they do call out homerids. You aren't just coping and hoping. you you it's Sorry, I didn't read this sentence that says merfolk seals homerids and a few daring humans. Yeah, no, no. Awesome. Sorry, no, no, no. Yeah, 100%. I know that ah generally I... this is it
00:29:23
Speaker
This is interesting too. What's that? Gods that command the currents as they swim alongside their followers. So for people who have that mono gods deck, you'll probably get a few more gods from Noctis. Noctis.
00:29:34
Speaker
It's good name too. um I wanted to highlight the fact that we are getting ah with this. There are two things that they did that were very important to me. You know, i i obviously am going to call ah Wizards out when there's things that I'm unhappy with. And I'm also going to give credit when credit is due.
00:29:53
Speaker
I do think that they heard at least some feedback in some way, shape or form in that they made this announcement by telling us there would be three Universe Beyond sets, but they didn't. take away from their in world by announcing what they are yet.
00:30:08
Speaker
um Yes, that's a good point. So yeah, we know there's three and they even told us the dates, but, but they're like, yeah, we'll deal with this later. Let's, let's focus on our magic stuff or like the in universe stuff.
00:30:19
Speaker
<unk> We're giving you the whole picture of when sets are coming out, but right now we're just focused on our in-universe stuff. and And they gave us a cool way to do it. Full trailers, full concept work, all of it up front.
00:30:30
Speaker
Also, um they did not do any back-to-back universe beyond. is That's a good point. Yeah, it's one then you know one one back and forth. One back and forth, which is because like there were, you know, like theyating the word they use. Yeah. This year we got Marvel and the Hobbit back to back.
00:30:48
Speaker
Correct. Yeah. So there's been just like a long layoff for magic lore. um And it was, you know, like that's a difficult thing. ah Now. Well, I think after we we get Reality Fracture Story next month, and then we don't get Magic Story again until February after that.
00:31:07
Speaker
So I'm hoping that this is a lesson learned. We won't get that again because it is really tough to go this long between... in-universe stuff, especially considering with what we don't know what we're getting with Reality Fracture. ah This is my frustration that we're building up to this giant multiverse what-if, which I am a sucker for what-ifs and multiversal stuff, and we're taking care of it in a set.

Storytelling Challenges in Magic

00:31:35
Speaker
Yeah, and and I think, ah yeah, I'm really excited from what I see about that, but you're right, and then it's gone. It's gone. um We have to, we have to like get to this new reality fracture, have a story and have a resolution in however many stories they give us. In one set. Yeah. In one set.
00:31:57
Speaker
Which is, it's, it's a real disappointment. you know, people said that the end of the Phyrexian arc was rushed and we got two sets to end the Phyrexian arc. Yep. Yes, we did. And, and,
00:32:10
Speaker
I will say too, because like we've we've seen... So we got to see some other stuff for Reality Fracture at this, including... and we got a lot from Reality Fracture. We got we got all the cards for the Lore 1-5.
00:32:23
Speaker
ah Johnny looks very fiery in his alternate reality, his um whatever mirror verse form. I can't remember what they call the alternate reality form.
00:32:36
Speaker
Looks very white. lily Lily looks like a total bitch what looks like. a total bitch is what she looks like she looks like a... it just or Yeah, especially the the flavor text on that lily.
00:32:51
Speaker
yeah All mistakes can be fixed, even you. Finally, she's a cleric. ah I mean, like a wide-aligned cleric, which her flip one should have always been. However... um but And you know people were like, oh, this is going to be another planar chaos. This isn't really planar chaos. so They're doing alternate what-if, like you said, but everything that's being printed is within color pie.
00:33:14
Speaker
they're They're shifting the characters to different color pie positions or shifting cards. but Yeah, and they're they're they're doing it, and it feels like it, though you're right. there I think they're at least the things we've seen so far, they're being more conservative with it. where We're not getting things in colors that they wouldn't be in So you get your Stingcaster Mage that is just a Snapcaster Mage with haste instead of flash.
00:33:43
Speaker
But fun fact, that just do its in red it was supposed to be red to begin with. Yeah. Yeah. So or you're your enlightened confidant is, you know, a white version of dark confidant, but it fits with how it's, they're still fitting it with how white would do that. So you're not, you're not having the color high breaks that showed up. in And we're getting a red crater hoof behibus, which you're ready is going to absolutely love. Cause it cares about artifacts, crater hoof with artifacts. Like, yeah, got great.
00:34:15
Speaker
um But, but I will say too, ah The fact that we got, you know, like the the central seems to be a the magical college, the shift for the magical college, whether we have like Stinger Quill, we have um and my my mind's blanking on the other names just because I like Stinger Quill. But v blue yeah but i mean there we've got the Woodward Prodigy. So it's the creature you know, the creatures with the prepared who are kind of the wizards. Yes, but but we we basically are getting a a... That is going to be the focus, is this this like the magical college.
00:34:53
Speaker
But then we also got splash art that showed us Mirrodin Pure. How are we only spending one set here? Right, yeah, because we got we got that card preview, the angel from that would have been a Muradin, that art has existed since Muradin Pure.
00:35:12
Speaker
Darksteel Angel, basically a take on... ah um platinum angel with chippy art that was from 15 years ago. If people do not know the story, we didn't actually know at that point, if we were getting the mirrored in the mirrored winning or the firexians winning. And we got promotional like items for both sets mirrored in pure or a new firexia.
00:35:39
Speaker
And we're now saw like, we get at least a card, but like, man, Give me an opportunity to see Mirrodin Pure. Oh, why am I blanking? there's therere in the In the pre-release kits for that set you had, ah the the promos were... the the there The only magic card that has a Mirrodin Pure expansion symbol on it is the Mana Rock that I have in my Kozilek deck, and it's not even a good Mana Rock these days because it's it's a three it costs three to play and it give only gives you colorless. But you get a life.
00:36:12
Speaker
but you get a life, but it's got the mirrored and pure expansion symbol. So that's in my, my. Yep. Yep. So that was it. But now, so we know now, like the thing is like we're there, we're going to be focusing and we're going one set. So our storyline is going to take place. It's, it looks like, you know, card wise, we may get more, but our story is going to be taking place around the planes, walkers and the school of magic.
00:36:37
Speaker
Whereas if I just want more of that, I know. don't want be There's no way they can do this, and I'm not i'm not going to put shade on whoever the art author is for this upcoming set, but there's no way they can do this much story justice in one set. Yeah, I mean, and that was the story with the recent Tarkir set, too.
00:36:59
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. Excellent. they Left off the whole, you know, how did how did the dragons go away? That got completely left aside. Handful of sentences of explanation because that's all the room that they had. Somehow Palpatine returned. Yeah, exactly. um And i mean we also didn't put the story in Fortnite, I guess, unlike that particular reveal for Star Wars. Yeah.
00:37:22
Speaker
But I mean, we also had the whole to me, the that happened with Lorwyn, where we got like a Lorwyn story that was not about all the things that had changed on Lorwyn, but more ha ha ha. Oh, goes from here.
00:37:36
Speaker
And we got some isekai. they Did I use that correctly? Thank you. i'm learning I'm working. I'm working on this. But I mean, it's just it's it's tough. And that's why maybe maybe the next stage of storytelling is going to be that I just I really do wish that it had been the case that we would spend as long as we need on a plane and not just with an overarching comic book story kind of world where we jump from place to place.

Star Trek Card Previews and Mechanics

00:38:07
Speaker
Because I'm really excited about Reality Fracture. Speaking of jumping from place to place, though, we also got a we got a preview stream for star Trek. We did. That's true. We jumped a whole bunch of cards from Star Trek right before Amsterdam.
00:38:24
Speaker
I think you mean sports cards, Magic the Gathering, since I can now get a signed Patrick Stewart. Yeah. And a piece of his jersey, I think. or like ah oh I joked about that after, you know, about the like the jersey card things that come on the baseball cards. I'm like, you eventually you're going to be able to trade part of Mark Rosewater's T-shirt for Gavin's sweater or Gavin's vest. Yeah.
00:38:51
Speaker
I mean, like I said, I would be as giddy as a kid if I opened up a Patrick Stewart side card. So I get it. But it was a bit weird to get all the Star Trek stuff right now, too. Yeah, we are getting a full reprint of the Shocklands and the full art Shocklands look fucking amazing. Yeah.
00:39:12
Speaker
They look like strange new worlds. hu get Get it. That's a. I get it. I'm not a Star Trek person, but i I know subtitles of tv shows sometimes.
00:39:24
Speaker
But yeah, I mean, we got ah we've had a lot of announcements. I will say from the the perspective of a lore enjoyer. There's actually some really cool stuff coming this year. I mean, I'm excited about Rally Fracture, even if it I'm worried. um But that lineup for next year for the in-world sets actually is the... I am way more excited about that than I think I was for this year.
00:39:48
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Yeah, I think I am too. And part of it isn't only being six instead of seven, which is just a wild thing to say. I can't believe I'm saying that I'm excited for six sets. They did this on purpose so that we would be excited for six.
00:40:10
Speaker
Right. Well, um I did find that card, by the way, if we want to wildly veer to a different topic. And pick your poison.
00:40:21
Speaker
So Pick Your Poison was a playtest card from the 2019 and 2021. So that would have been Mr. Booster 1. So I got the timeline wrong. This was the first one. And then Pick Your Poison is ah as a card from ah Murders at Karloff Manor that came out in 2024. Oh, that is Yeah, yeah.
00:40:40
Speaker
They just went and grabbed the name from from this playtest card. It is literally the exact same name. ah The cards aren't even the same colors. There's a green and then the Mr. Booster 1 is green and black. Yeah.
00:40:52
Speaker
So it's it's it's... It's close. The Joven Chandler, though... Yeah. They're both red legends that are 3-3s with different abilities and different mana costs. And making it a legend and making it a rare, it's a much more...
00:41:09
Speaker
high profile card than what this is going to be. The only reason I even know this murders at Co-OF manner one is because again, I have a unspiracy cube that I keep noodling around with and i don't ever build it, but this playtest card is like legitimately a card I would put in that cube.
00:41:28
Speaker
and then I tried to look for it and all of a sudden couldn't find it because this other one is taking all the searches because this Mr. Mr. Card is kind of not a real card.
00:41:39
Speaker
But it is an interesting like thing to think about, right? Because this does differentiate a little bit from unsets where they were very clear that they couldn't reuse or felt they couldn't reuse. Yeah. Well, that was a very that was a thing. i don't know. I assume was Mark Rosewater talked about about names being important and ah being a limited resource. And like within the I'll say Blackboarder, but it doesn't really fit anymore because there's Blackboarder uncards that aren't acorns and it's the acorns whatever.
00:42:07
Speaker
But within the the cards that can be played in sanctioned magic events, you know, they can't repeat a name because as soon as the card has a name, it becomes that card according to the rules. The rules don't care about the printing of the card, which is why if you ever want to see something funny, look at the Oracle text for some of the early magic cards that named sets like Apocalypse Chime that destroys all Homeland's cards. They've like eroded that card to literally list every single Homeland's card in its text box.
00:42:40
Speaker
Because it didn't care which printing it was. Because it because the way the the rules work now, it was a little bit loosey-goosey early on, but to kind of build the game into where it's at now, the game can't care about what set the cards come from. It makes things too complicated for really card availability, I think is a big part of that too.
00:43:02
Speaker
And so sanctioned magic events, obviously there's some fan and community created events that care about that stuff and that's all fine, but Matt official wizard sanctioned events cannot, or formats cannot care where the cards came from. Every card with the same name is the exact same card, regardless of the set.
00:43:20
Speaker
And that, Creates a little bit of a weird thing. So again, like the the unsets, they went out of their way to create names that wouldn't take up valuable space from the rest of the game. But now the playtest cards are in a weird Another area.
00:43:37
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You have the playtest and like I in these mystery booster ah test playtest cards. I guess they're just a different kind of playtest card, isn't it? They're considered, quote, unknown card.
00:43:49
Speaker
Unknown cards. Thank you. That's the difference. Yeah. Yeah. Which is the interesting playoff of taking on the on. But it's of course it is a way for them to experiment. I mean, that's what I thought about with the with the rule breakers, is that it is now their place in some ways for Gavin and them to be able to to to to ah flush out mechanics or ideas or to to to try out new things in a way that I think unused to do.
00:44:15
Speaker
Yeah, that's a super cool space to do it. And I get to do it more often because I get new ones every MagicCon. Yes.

Closing Remarks and Podcast Support

00:44:26
Speaker
Which there are some new ones from Amsterdam I'd like to get a hold of, but those are going to be harder to get a hold of because they're from Amsterdam. Because they're from Amsterdam, yeah. I'm working on that right now, too.
00:44:40
Speaker
Well, that's... all the announcements that were made recently. and And more importantly, I think for us too, just the, the, the, the full lineup for 2027, I'm excited that they did not announce that. the universe beyond. Like i said, we pretty sure there's a Marvel one.
00:44:56
Speaker
don't really care what the other ones are right now. Maybe it's better this way. Maybe I can actually enjoy them if they don't like, I don't feel like it's being done to outshine the world. It's not stepping on the toes of the in-universe stuff. The way that sets kind of did previously for like this year.
00:45:16
Speaker
Yeah, because like last year we got previews for Spider-Man the week that Edge of Eternities was coming out. Correct. Yeah, and it just overshadowed the actual in-universe set.
00:45:30
Speaker
Yeah, and just just having one fewer set will help. untangle or uncouple. i don't know. The, the never ending preview season. Unclog. Unclog is a good way. I just thought thrown out names for potential unsets. on up Yeah. Yeah. Unclog. That could be a fun fun. Unclog. I would play unclogged in a heartbeat.
