Excitement for Pixar's Elemental

00:01:16
Speaker
Yeah! Welcome back to another episode of Animation Deliberation, the podcast where we take action animation and cartoon seriously and not too seriously. We are your hosts, I am Zuhara Lee.
00:01:24
Speaker
And my name's Jay Scotty Sinclair. And jump for joy, we have a trailer for a Pixar movie. We haven't talked Pixar movies in a while and I'm very excited. The trailer for Elemental dropped. We got a teaser of it that we've seen in the theaters for a few months now, but now we got plot. Looks very intriguing. How are you feeling about it? Yeah.
00:01:44
Speaker
I'm just generally excited. We had that episode back at the new year where we talked about our favorites from 2022 and our favorites for 2023. And I remember voicing my excitement for this film, but I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that this is the first original Pixar IP I feel like we've gotten in a while. We've gotten a lot of sequels, a lot of spin-offs and stuff like that, but I just love
00:02:07
Speaker
the imagination I'm seeing on display here, like, you know, elements are, pardon the pun here, but a pretty elemental thing. So we see this concept of like, you know, earth versus earth, wind, fire, water translated a lot of across a lot of different mediums and franchises and
00:02:27
Speaker
stories, but I just immediately kind of taken by this art style and this unique approach and a lot of the visual gags like really landed with me.
00:02:38
Speaker
Yeah, the pun game is definitely strong with this one. I'm very excited about it. Little things like just seeing them do the actual wave in the crowd, and hot food being something that's actually physically hot. So I was worried that because it was so science-based, a lot of it was gonna go over my head, but it just seems like they're hitting all the audiences for this, and it's really intriguing. One joke that I never get tired of is when
00:03:07
Speaker
Inside Out came out. They were like, oh, what if cars had feelings? What if toys had feelings? Now what if feelings have feelings? And now we're expanding. That's like, ah, now the elements have feelings as well. Yes, yes, yes, yeah. It cracked me up when they were just like, yeah, elements aren't supposed to bond. I was like, no, that's exactly what they're supposed to do. How did you build these buildings without doing that?
00:03:29
Speaker
Sure, sure, sure. Yeah, but I do think that's important that we did get some inclination as to where the story is going.

Diversity in Element City

00:03:38
Speaker
Like in the original teaser trailer, we saw just kind of snapshots of what a day in the life of Element City. I think it's Element City.
00:03:49
Speaker
what it looks like. And we had, you know, Ember on the train and she bumps into Wade and it seems like that's their kind of like meet cute and they hit it off. But yeah, with this tagline of like, everybody knows in Element City that elements don't mix. And it seems like this is really going to be the story of like overcoming diversity and embracing diversity and like embracing different approaches and perspectives to life. And you know, Pixar always
00:04:18
Speaker
does a great job of driving home that emotional through line and bringing a story with a lot of resonance. So to get some more insight about what to expect there, I was pretty delighted. And Wade seems like a total goofball. I think I'm really going to relate a lot to Wade. I loved when he came out of the pipe, and he's like, oh, that really bit me out of shape. And he's all muscular, and Ember is like, ooh. He's like, oh, that's better. And he gets a little more schlubby. I'm like, all right. High five with that. I feel you, bud.
00:04:48
Speaker
I too am out of shape. The kids names being Marco and Polo really cracked me up. Yeah, that was a great gag too and their house looks like it's just filled with water and I saw somebody with a pool noodle chasing the other one.

Character Backgrounds: Ember and Wade

00:05:07
Speaker
And it looks like we might be addressing like some class differences as well. It seems like Ember comes from this family. Her dad has this shop that he's kind of, my takeaway is that he's worked very hard to build up and maintains. She feels a lot of pressure to follow in his footsteps and
00:05:24
Speaker
keep this shop going, but she has the conversation with Wade where he's like, who gets to tell you how to do anything in your life? And later when they go to his mom's house, she's a little surprised, like you live here and he's like, oh, this is my mom's house. So I'm just kind of getting the impression that Wade has enjoyed a more carefree life with a little more freedom where Ember's life has been a little more structured, which is, you know,
00:05:50
Speaker
I think of the Bruce Lee quote, like be water, like be flexible, be able to like, you know, go with the flow and whatnot. But it will be interesting to see what they can teach each other about their, you know, with their different upbringings.
00:06:02
Speaker
Yeah, I really like that because I feel like a lot of studios lately have had this emphasis on culture and understanding cultures, but they've been very direct with it like Encanto and, you know, just which is more recent movies that have come out. So I think this is just like a creative way for them to be able to tell that story without like,
00:06:24
Speaker
directly relating to specific cultures. It's more of like, here's the essence of it and you can apply it to your day to day, which Pixar has always been fantastic at doing, but this is a very fun way of doing that. Yeah. Speaking of culture, I actually looked up the voice cast and I was like pleasantly surprised that I really, I recognize two people.
00:06:47
Speaker
on this entire voice cast. I don't recognize either of the main characters. Ember is voiced by Leah Lewis, maybe Lee Lewis, and then Wade is voiced by Mamoudi Ati. So I don't know if you're familiar with either of those, but the only ones I recognize are Wendy McLendon-Covey as Gale, an air elemental with a big personality in Wade's employer.
00:07:11
Speaker
I recognize her from Reno 911, as well as the Goldbergs. She played the mom on the Goldbergs. And then Catherine O'Hara is Brooke Ripple, Wade's mom, and Catherine O'Hara. She's been on a lot of stuff, most recently Schitt's Creek, and then she was also the mother on the Home Alone movies, the first two anyway.
00:07:32
Speaker
Uh, I don't, yeah, I was going to try and pull her name, but I can't remember her name, but yeah, she was Eugene Levy's wife. Yeah. Okay. She's a hoot. Yeah. Oh, that's exciting.

Humorous Element Personalities

00:07:46
Speaker
Yeah, and then still kind of speaking to culture, I did like how the intro kind of gave us an idea of what to expect from each of the elements. I think they say air, their heads in the clouds, they're not really paying attention to what's going on around them. And I thought it was funny the way they decided to take Earth because I was like, oh, Earth's going to be grounded, they're centered, they're good. No, it's like, no, Earth can be kind of seedy. I was like, oh, that's a great subversion of expectations.
00:08:12
Speaker
What did I say? Oh, water gets into everything. And that's when you see the young wave get absorbed by a sponge, which was a great visual gag there. And then fire, we tend to run a little hot, which makes sense. Yeah. Sorry. I'm like watching the stuff again, just feeding the little baby lighter fluid. Oh yeah. That was another great visual gag there. Yeah.
00:08:36
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, this is gonna be a lot of fun if nothing else. I mean, I'm sure they're gonna find some way to hit us in the fields.
00:08:43
Speaker
Yeah, there was one sequence where it looked like Ember was going to like touch a wall of water and like it felt like a very beautiful moment in the trailer, but I was just like I found myself like trying to predict what's going to happen. I can totally see that like being a sequence where she goes to touch the water. It kind of puts her out a little bit and hurts her and she's like makes her kind of like backpedal away from being open to like a potential relationship with another
00:09:08
Speaker
elements. Yeah. But I'll be interested to see what that scene plays like out in context of the entire film. Yeah, there's even a point where like she's driving on a on a motorbike with the water guy and like an old lady fire lady sees her and she's like, Oh my god, like she's with somebody else. So it's like, you already kind of see like that that cultural gossip and big family issues. And sure, yeah, it's gonna be intriguing.
00:09:34
Speaker
Yeah, that's also making me think of when they're in the hot air balloon together and she's basically causing

Art Direction Highlights

00:09:38
Speaker
the hot air balloon to rise. That's pretty great. And then when Wade makes the rainbow, that was pretty cool too when he like glides over the lake and leaves little water droplets behind and creates this rainbow. It's cool to see how they...
00:09:52
Speaker
use their, I don't want to call them powers because I guess they have powers, but abilities. Being themselves. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. I'm surprised you've never heard of this Leia Lewis before. Cause her voice just seems so familiar. It does. I found myself like I've, I've felt like I would know who she was when I went to go look up the voice cast and I, I don't, I know nothing that she's done. Yeah. She's got a good voice though. Definitely. Yeah. I'm definitely excited for it. Yeah.
00:10:24
Speaker
The only other thing that's coming to mind that I want to make sure I mention is just the art direction. Again, we spent the most time with water and fire characters, so I think it makes sense that those stood out to me the most. But it's really cool how their bodies really capture what that particular element does in terms of the water refracting the light and whatnot, but then you go zoom in on their face and
00:10:49
Speaker
their faces have these really cool hand-drawn qualities to them, like the noses and mouths especially. I thought that was a really unique aesthetic that I have never quite seen. It's got a nice feel to it.
00:11:04
Speaker
you're talking about the faces like I love this like when you're on Wikipedia the poster that they have for it mm-hmm okay the sass in her face and she has like that hand-drawn style like to the flames itself it's really beautifully done and the I just noticed the catchphrase of this movie is opposites react yeah yeah it's exciting

Film Details and Engagement

00:11:27
Speaker
Yeah, and it's worth mentioning that this is being directed by Peter Sohn, who the last time we mentioned him on this podcast is when he was doing the voice of Socks for Lightyear. So he's definitely in the Pixar family, yeah. I wonder if we can just pick on him enough to get on the show. We can certainly try. I encourage the listeners as well, you know, be part of the movement, get Peter Sohn on animation deliberation hashtag it.
00:11:56
Speaker
That would be exciting. So this hits theaters in the United States June 16th, 2023. Sweet. I'm excited. I'm excited.
