Speaker: Hello, hungry people.
Speaker: hello hungry people this is snack situation show where we try snack Was that paused because Harrison walked in?
Speaker: Yeah, Harrison pushed the door open and walked into the room. Yeah, he did. Hi. I'm Matt Wilson. I'm Marlene Thompson. And did we try snacks on this show. We do.
Speaker: And this time around. do imagine if people were like, what do they do on this podcast called Snack Situation? Look, ah sometimes. they'll do they know I'm a ho-snack.
Speaker: Yeah, maybe that maybe they thought it was about that definition of snack and not about the more typical definition involving foods.
Speaker: Yeah, that'd be weird if they... they You were getting porn in your ah ah podcast form. That's weird. i i think anyway I think people do that. Anyway, this episode of Snack Situation.
Speaker: What this? This a great, fun episode of Snack Situation. Okay. We are going to try um some snacks sent to you. Yeah, by my family. As a birthday present. Yeah. By members of your family.
Speaker: So your birthday was actually over a month ago. it was. But it is the gift that keeps on giving. it is All the time. We're keeping it in our hearts all the year round. As we do. um Because... Unlike Jesus. yeah los Because we got this box of snacks from your family like...
Speaker: Maybe a week ago. week and a half ago, maybe? Yeah, it it came in this blue box. It says, it says pennsylvania the best of Pennsylvania General Store, Redding Terminal Market, which Redding Terminal Market is a um Basically like a food haven. it's it's what it It's a market in the middle of Center City, Philadelphia, and it's ah it's delicious. It has all kinds of foods. They have great stuff there. There's a lot of Amish food there.
Speaker: ah There's also a lot of, like, not just Amish food, there's just, like, food food. Like, yeah butchers and cheesesteaks and pretzels and all that. Anyway, it's it's very similar if you've been to a city with one of those, like...
Speaker: big central markets. It's kind of like that, but like everything there's really good. Yeah. okay Um, but we, yeah. So when we got the box, we were like, Oh, okay. This is stuff from running terminal market. And then we open it and it is just, it was better. Tasty. I could ever imagine. It's just tasty cakes. Yeah.
Speaker: Cause they know, they know me. Yes. And so we're going to try. And, Oh, I want to say that, that in the spirit of, I feel like last snack situation,
Speaker: we had said, oh, maybe we'll do like grocery store snacks. And at the Acme, the Acme, sorry, Acme in Pennsylvania, this is a grocery store snack. Yeah, I mean, you you can get these here. Not all of them. No, you can't.
Speaker: we're going to tell them We're going to tell them what you can and can't get in North Carolina. A lot of these you can get here. A lot of them you can't. Okay. um But we are going to try what's in here. Now, a lot of these are unlabeled.
Speaker: Well, i know what they are. So you're going to have to just say what they are. Yeah. So, well, we should save that one for last. Okay. Because that has a story behind it. so these are coffee cakes. They look like coffee cakes.
Speaker: but ah they are spelled with a K. So coffee is a K and cakes are a K. Like the cake in Tasty Cake. Yep. So it's also filled with a cake. Coffee cake. Yeah. So should we open it?
Speaker: Yeah, let's open it. All right. I think let's just split one because we're going to try a lot of these at once. Who are you to say I'm not going to eat all these fucking Tasty Cakes tonight? It's a lot. kidding. I know. I'm not going to do that. All right. Mm-hmm.
Speaker: So it's got filling inside.
Speaker: They are good with morning. With with your Wawa... Yeah, with your Wawa coffee. In the morning. With a tasty cake. It's really good.
Speaker: It's a pretty straight up coffee cake. It's got... It's like a coffee cake, but also a cupcake. It's a... Like a yellow cake with some streusel on top.
Speaker: And a little bit of filling inside. It's kind of like a... A non-chocolate packaged cupcake, I guess, but without frosting on top. Instead, there's like a streusel.
Speaker: I think it's meant to be compared to like a Drake's coffee cake. Yes. don't think as good. Did you say you don't think it's as good? I said it is as good. Okay. I don't think I've ever had a Drake's coffee cake.
Speaker: It's as good as that. I like coffee cake in general.
Speaker: That's good. Yeah. Great. Okay, what's next? Okay, let's do... These are candy cakes. Yes, these are the candy cakes. These are the ones that you could get here. Candy cakes also spelled with a K. Let's just say basically everything spelled with a K. Okay.
Speaker: no Some people are like, what the fuck is a Tasty Cake? I know Little Debbie. if if If you don't know what Tasty Cakes are, it is the Philadelphia area version of like a Little Debbie or a Hostess or a Drake's.
Speaker: Except better. Packaged confection. yeah so These are but some of my favorite, if not like maybe my second favorite Tasty Cake because it's a peanut butter.
Speaker: It's covered in Chocolate. And it's a cake, and then there's a peanut butter filling. so yeah yeah So it's like a layer of cake, a layer of peanut butter, all covered in chocolate. It's delicious. It's so good.
Speaker: It is very good. Yeah. this I think this is my favorite Tasty Cake. That's fair. It probably is also my favorite, but for nostalgia purposes, there are a few that hold true to my heart. ah It's basically like...
Speaker: A Reese's cup, but also with cake inside. It's very good. The peanut butter is very similar to Reese's peanut butter to me. So let's go with
Speaker: the next next one. who It's also one of my favorites. And it's probably because it's nostalgic for me. Okay. But it's a butterscotch crimpet. And yeah, crimpet is usually spelled with a K. Also, in this case, spelled with a K. Yeah. Now you can buy those here too.
Speaker: Yes, you can. um You've had these before and you say that they are not quite butterscotch, but I think that's a lie.
Speaker: I don't taste butterscotch in them so much. it's a Okay. Instead of a circular cake, like a lot of these are, this one's like a log of cake, like a small log of cake. It's crimpet.
Speaker: Yeah. It is a crimpet. It's a crimpet.
Speaker: It's very good.
Speaker: There's like a hint of butterscotch in the icing. Mm-hmm. Well, Matt, what are we drinking?
Speaker: We're each drinking a orange-flavored water. Orange-flavored sparkling water. That's right. You're drinking a LaCroix. Yeah. Or as you say, LaCroix. LaCroix.
Speaker: And I'm having a liquid death squeezed to death. Oh, that's a new one. Yeah. Interesting. Is it good? It's pretty good. Oh. is Are you almost done? I'll try it. You can try it, though. No, I'll try I'll wait for it later. I'm not going to drink more spit.
Speaker: Okay. This one actually tastes more butterscotchy than the one I had before. Interesting. But it's it's still mostly vanilla, which I like, because butterscotch has a flavor.
Speaker: Yeah, you don't like flavor. Like, butterscotch candy, I don't like very much. i You know, I like butterscotch as a flavor. In general.
Speaker: Butterscotch candy makes me think of... You can have that. Okay. Butterscotch candy makes me think of, like, hard candy that a grandma... Werther's. Werther's is good.
Speaker: but that's that's a butterscotch candy. I don't think of Werther's as butterscotch. I think of Werther's as, like...
Speaker: It's literally butterscotch. Butter toffee. Which is butterscotch. Is it the same thing? Yeah! Yeah!
Speaker: are two different things i would be like what those are good though i do yes so um these next sure great so these are just like um um tasty cake has cupcakes would you would you care to guess what they start with k's yeah so the the the cup starts with a k i'm pretty sure okay i could be wrong actually maybe okay i get We can look it up Okay. But they have several different kinds. One is um chocolate cupcake or chocolate cake with chocolate icing. Which there were in there some of those in there, but those are gone now. Yeah, I ate them.
Speaker: And ah they don't have any filling inside, but these these are chocolate cake with vanilla frosting. And they have like a filling inside. Okay. Okay. Oh my god, we're eating so many fucking tasty cakes right now. That's why I'm saying it's a good thing we're splitting them and not eating one each because that would be a lot. Yeah.
Speaker: Here, just take a bite and then I'll... No. Okay. Alright. Thank you. Yeah. Cheers. Cheers. we We touched the cupcakes. Yeah. Not a visual medium.
Speaker: No, you can't have these, Eleanor. Eleanor came in and... Our cat, Eleanor, came in and... Started sniffing around. She loves... Sweets. Sweets and baked goods.
Speaker: And we found out. We were like, oh, that's really weird. Why does she like sweets so much? um Because cats can't differentiate between sweet and not. And it's because of the fat yeah that's in...
Speaker: Sugar. They desire the fat content oh of ah cakes and stuff. Yeah, it's weird. But she in particular, our other cake, Harrison won't really bother with it, but... No, they'll just yell.
Speaker: Ellador loves it. She loves, like, in it we cannot leave out any sweets. We have to, like, put them in the microwave so she won't get to them.
Speaker: These are fine. What? What? The cupcakes are fine. Okay. Yeah, the cupcakes are not my... I don't know. I like them all, honestly. if i'm um i like the chocolate on chocolate ones, though. i feel like Those are my favorite. Of all the like packaged snack cakes, cupcakes in general, like Hostess cupcakes, I have never liked.
Speaker: Yeah, they're they're like... It's almost like like... I know that we're eating plastic mostly, but it's like you're eating plastic. They're so fake tasting. They are really fake tasting. agree. And I know what a real cupcake tastes like. Yeah. so So... It's weird. It's such a weird simulacrum of a cupcake that I can't... um like Even when I was a kid, i would... i would It's not that I didn't like Hostess cupcakes, but it was like like a Little Debbie a cake. Like a zebra cake was a lot better.
Speaker: Oh, zebra cakes are delicious. Yeah. But, like, I mean, let it be said here and now, Little Debbie still hasn't said it. Yeah, and Little Debbie does not get brought up in this household. First of all, not only because you married a Pennsylvania girl. Girl, you married a Pennsylvania girl! What the fuck was that? And we only eat tasty cakes in this household.
Speaker: So, um do you want to try those? We should try these, yeah. All right. um Do you not want to? No, I was going to say... They're okay, but we can try them.
Speaker: Just a bite. Just a bite. Just a bite. So there are these cookie bars in here. There's an oatmeal raisin cookie bar and there's a chocolate chip cookie bar. Yeah. So they're pretty good.
Speaker: ah if you like, like I used to eat them a lot in college or like even in high school. i would go to the, and we'll talk about the little bodegas on the side or the little corner stores.
Speaker: Where I grew up. And I would get them with like a Yoohoo in the morning. In the morning. They're not even a Yoohoo or a Nesquik. Oh, so good.
Speaker: All right, going try the chocolate chip. Here, I'll take little piece chocolate chip. Here, here, here. Let's put this one. Yeah, okay. I get the feeling that these are going to be very soft.
Speaker: no
Speaker: Not as soft as I was expecting. But still too soft. Too soft? As a cookie texture. And it's a cookie bar. Yeah. I don't think these are my jam.
Speaker: But we're going to try the oatmeal raisin too. This brings back a little nostalgia. I like that even less. Than the chocolate chip. See, I like the oatmeal raisin. I know that people don't like oatmeal raisin. I'm an oatmeal raisin fan. also But chocolate chip is superior. But...
Speaker: I will eat oatmeal raisin. Not to invoke Little Debbie again. No. But the best oatmeal... Oh, those ah the oatmeal cream pies. They're really fucking good. Yeah. See, that's the thing that sucks about Little Debbie not saying it.
Speaker: Is because Little Debbie's pretty good. Yeah. If you don't if you don't know, because this is a reference back to something Chris and I said a long time ago. Little Debbie, to our knowledge, never said Black Lives Matter.
Speaker: Mm-hmm. But we don't really know if Tasty Cake did either. So I don't know how good of a... I don't know how... you know I mean, y'all... I think you and Chris have a deeper nostalgia for Little Debbie, and you you want to hold on to it as dear. um Growing up in Philadelphia, especially in the suburbs, most people there, most businesses would probably not say that.
Speaker: ah Well, listeners, let us know if you're in the... I'm not saying it's good. if you're a Tasty Cake fan or a Tasty Cake follower and you know if they said it, please let us know. Because then we can feel better. Yeah, I mean, at at this point, there's really... haven't... I literally... I sincerely and seriously have not bought a Little Debbie product.
Speaker: Oh, I haven't either. Since 2020. Yeah. Since they didn't say it. No, I haven't either. I agree. Oh, no, I think I did have an oatmeal cream pie, but it was at, like, somebody's house. I ate an oatmeal... I've eaten an oatmeal cream pie, but I did not pay for it. now No. No. Okay, let's get on to the last one. Okay, the last tasty cake. So the last tasty cake comes from... It's... I haven't had one in a long time.
Speaker: So before we try it, I want to, like, tell... ah story it's just It's not like an individual story. It's more just like a memory. good Same deal with the oatmeal cookie bars.
Speaker: When I was in um school, like middle school, um elementary school and middle school mostly, I was a latchkey kid because most kids in the 90s were.
Speaker: So um i my elementary school was like literally behind my house. And I could like walk the the half a block around the corner and go home.
Speaker: So ah there was a little market. It was called Ann's Market. they If you're ever in Eddystone, Pennsylvania, and you get a chance to go to Ann's Market, get their fucking hoagies.
Speaker: Because I'll tell you what, they're going to change your life. They're so good. So it's it's ah it's one of those corner stores that's also like a delhi. Yeah, it's like, Yeah, yeah it's essentially, a Yeah. yeah So it's like a bodega. They have like breakfast sandwiches and stuff. It's really... Okay, I'll stop... I'll stop messing with it. Oh my God. I just want to make sure they don't go stale. It'll be fun.
Speaker: So... ah i would, as an after-school snack, I would go Ann's. I would get a can of Pepsi.
Speaker: And I would get a Chocolate Junior, which is what we're about to try. And for like... I don't remember how much they were they cost, but I do remember that when Chocolate Juniors went up to a dollar, i could no longer buy them.
Speaker: What were they before? They were like 50 cents or 75 cents. Wow. Yeah. And, well, I mean, this was a pen. Okay. Everything was expansive. so ah So this this is going to bring back memories for me. um so what this is... I'm really shocked that I didn't get so sick because sugar on sugar, I'll tell you what...
Speaker: So this is like... It's a lot. This is like a cake. It's a cake, and it's it's like it... With chocolate icing on top. And then there's like a cut through the middle. And there's chocolate that icing in the middle.
Speaker: So it's like a two-layer chocolate cake. her And it's called a Chocolate Junior. Okay. it's very It reminds me of those... um
Speaker: They're not exactly the same, but it's like the similarly packaged, like, this is ah a single cake in a package. Yeah, that's what this is. Is, like, the pancacitos.
Speaker: You can buy the bimbo pancacitos. They're like the little pound cakes. Yeah, this, yep, mm-hmm. It's like that. Yeah. Okay. I'm going take the first bite. Okay. Okay.
Speaker: Yeah, i still good. Let's give it a shot. Still good. Still good. Still hits.
Speaker: I like that. That's good. Yeah. so Still the best for my, bang for my buck, I'm getting Chocolate Junior. Because it's the best thing Tasty Cake makes.
Speaker: I think. I think that's worlds better than the cupcake. Yeah. Because it's got, like, and it's not just frosting in the middle. It's like a cream. Yeah. Like a chocolate cream. Yeah. Like a ganache. It's so good.
Speaker: I mean, it's grocery store, Matt. We wouldn't call it a ganache. It's cream. Don't say ganache. I feel like... Yeah. That's... Mm-hmm. I tend to prefer...
Speaker: When packaged snack cakes taste like real cake. Yeah, that tastes like real cake. And this tastes like real cake. It's very good. It's like a cake and I just put in a wrapper. Mm-hmm. I mean, you can tell that it's a grocery store cake, but it's pretty like a snack cake.
Speaker: But it's good. Yeah. like I think the reason like Hostess stuff... Who's going to make the gourmet version? Over Chocolate Junior for us. Somebody do that.
Speaker: but Because i don't want to do it. I'm too busy.
Speaker: I feel like Hostess stuff is my least favorite of the packaged snack cakes. Because they all taste so chemically.
Speaker: yeah They all taste so processed and fake-y. who Like, I know people love snowballs. I hate them. Oh, yeah, they're gross.
Speaker: Aren't they like, well, are they coconut? I i like yeah coconut, there's but I don't like anything Hostess makes. Yeah, like. Wouldn't that be funny if Tasty Cake was owned by Hostess? The only Hostess thing that I think is even somewhat good is a Twinkie.
Speaker: I don't like Twinkies. I think Twinkies are better than most things. Yeah, i don't like them.
Speaker: Don't look at me like that. What? What? I just don't like them. Okay. Sorry. What are you sorry about? You can like it. You just looked at me like you wanted me to agree and I don't. No, I don't need to agree. i just like I think of all the hostess things. like I don't love anything hostess, really. But like...
Speaker: Of all the hostess things, the one I'm most likely to be okay with is a Twinkie. Mm-hmm. Yeah, I'm not a fan. Fair enough. Yeah, Chocolate Junior.
Speaker: Ten out ten. That's good. Yeah. yeah Ten out of freaking ten. All right, so are we ranking them or no? we Yeah, we can rank them. Okay. Just last time, I know that we haven't ranked stuff in a minute, but we had a bunch of different stuff. So, obviously...
Speaker: I'm going to say, the the even though they're nostalgic, I'm going to go and put the ah cookie bars at the bottom. that's i would also put those at the bottom. Then I would probably put the coffee cake next.
Speaker: Okay. Then I'd probably do cupcakes, butterscotch, crimpets, and a chocolate junior up top. Up top. what Where's the candy cake? Oh, second. Sorry. Candy cake is second. Candy cake is second. So it's Chocolate Junior first, candy cake second, butterscotch third. Our cats are fighting. Hey!
Speaker: Okay, they're fine. So, ah mine is pretty close to yours, but maybe a slightly different. I would put the cookies, cookie bars at the bottom, the cupcakes next, then the butterscotch crumpets, then the coffee cake, hu Then the candy cake.
Speaker: Then the... What's it called again? Chocolate Junior. Chocolate Junior. At the top. Yeah. ah So good. Really? Well, that's... We've got figure out how to package these because we opened half of them and...
Speaker: Well, we can put them all in a in a big plastic Ziploc bag and that'll that'll do it. That'll that'll keep them fresh. Yep. um Cool.
Speaker: We ate a bunch of candy. It's 10 o'clock. I'm... Oh, no. Oh, no. You got to suffer for your art. Well, it's not suffering. Well, it's not art.

Speaker: That's it. this episode, if you have Tasty Cakes in your area, go buy them. Although, we don't know if they ever said it, so we can't give it our full-throated recommendation. Though I will say that if it's like some independent store and they have Tasty Cakes there, and just buy them because the money's going to go to the store. If it's just... just I don't know, man.
Speaker: We live in a fucked up world. Snacks make it better. Snacks do make it better. Thanks for listening, everybody. Bye. Stay hungry.
